Mar. 21, 2024 - Richard L. "Dick" Conrad, an East Greenville Fire Co. fireman, p assed away at the age of 87 on March 5th. Dick was a fireman for 35-plus years in the fire service as a firefighter, an Asst. Engineer, and Chief Engineer. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and Penn State football. He was the husband of the late Shirley (Shantz) Conrad. He is survived by his two sons, Kevin and David. Both so n s were also firemen in the past with East Greenville Fire Co. He was the grandfather of Adam and Daniele, and the great grandfather of four great-grandchildren. He will be sadly m issed by his family and all his friends of the fire service, and the communities of the Upper Perkiomen Valley.

LOWER FREDERICK, PA - On February 12th at 11:44 P.M., multiple departments were dispatched for a fire on Village Dr. in Lower Frederick. Chief 52 confirmed a working fire, with fire show ing through the roof. Crews operated hand lines to attack the fire. Mutual aid com pan ies assisted with throwing ladders and making entry into the home, keeping the fire predominantly held to the hom e of origin. Crews fought the fire for several hours. R espon din g units in cluded Lower Frederick 52, Upper Frederick 87, Harleysville 89, Limerick 51, Skippack 86, Perkiomen 66, Upper Salford 78, and Green Lane 42, as well as EMS units from 308 and 336 and RFIT1.

Heavy Fire Consumes Cottage in Salisbury Twp. SALISBURY TWP., PA - On February 20th at 2:00 P.M., the Eastern Salisbury Fire Company, along with the Western Sal isbury, City of Allentown Engines 11 & 14, Lower Milford Tanker 13 and Greenwalds RIT responded for a dwelling fire in Waldheim Park in Salisbury Township. Eastern Salisbury Chief 20 arrived on scen e and had a large cottage fully in volved and called for the second-alarm. The cau se of the fire is being investigated by the Salisbury Township Fire Marshal.

Townhouses Damaged and Destroyed in Fullerton Blaze FULLERTON, PA - At approxi mately 11:00 A.M. on March 4th, heavy fire and thick black smoke were seen showing from the two-story townhouses located in the 400 block o f Carolina Ave. As flames were com ing out Hie front o f 412, a more intense fire was spreading in Hie rear to the adjoin ing exposures. Mean while, Hie first due Whitehall Twp. Police were busy evacuating Hie occupants o f the potentially affected townhouses. When Hie four Whitehall compa nies were dispatched, they were aug mented with Catasauqua, North Catasauqua for manpower, Greenawalds for RIT, and the Cetronia Ambulance Corps. The townhouses were built back when old laws allowed for a lack o f fire walls in the attic area. Command requested a sec ond-alarm, which brought in units from Laury's Station, Woodlawn, Coplay, Allentown and the Lehigh County air cascade. The fire destroyed two o f the townhouses and badly damaged the third, while the remaining two had a smoke odor, but were habitable. Three families composing o f nine adults were affected by this blaze. No in juries were reported. The fire was imder control in about 40 minutes, with Hie checking o f hot spots taking place Hie rest o f the day.

LONGSWAMP TWP., PA - On March 21st around 11:00 A.M., the Topton Fire Company along with Seisholtzville Fire Com pany, Hereford Fire Company and Tanker 1 from the Lower Macungie Fire Department were dispatched for a chimney fire at 8815 Mountain Road in Longswamp Township. As you begin and continue your training as a firefighter in NYS one of the a sp ects that needs considerable attention is whether or not to take national certification exams. There are several reasons for this, the first being that you simply never know if an opportunity (such as employment or family) will take you out of state and having national certification can help you continue your career as a firefighter immediately without having to repeat any training. A secon d reason would be to verify to yourself, your volunteer department and/or career fire service em ployer that your skills are legit imate. Let’ s take a look at som e of the nuts and bolts of the national certification firefighter program in NYS. Som e basic definitions first. Accreditation (or to be ac credited) means to have an out side, third-party agency look at the co u rses offered and deter mine whether or not a specific course(s) meet a certain level or criteria. In NYS The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA - NFPA.org) se ts the standards that are used by these third-party agen cies to accredit the firefighter cou rses that are offered by the Office of Fire Prevention and Control (OFPC). Further, in NYS only specific cou rses are accredited and not the agency (OFPC) it self and only for the pu rposes of national certification and not awarding college credit. The third party that runs that check system for firematic cou rses in NYS is call “ The Pro Board”(www.theproboard.org). The Pro Board will compare the cou rse syllabus with the NFPA standards to determine whether or not the two docum ents are consistent. If so, then the agency, in this ca se OFPC can offer a national certification test that theoretically can be used by other states to recognize your training as being suffi cient. Not every firematic cou rse offered by OFPC has a national certification test. In fact, there are only fifteen c o u rses in NYS where a na tional certification test can be administered. They are as fol lows and can also be viewed

As an example, Florida d o e s not ac cept any and Pennsylvania still requires a review of your coursework before accepting your training.
3) Som e are simply a paper test with the vast majority of the questions being multiple choice although som e (like Fire Officer 1) have short answer questions that provide a specific scenario and ask to describe the proper procedure or legality. Still other national certification tests as can be seen in this article have a practical skills part as well as a paper test. 4) Lately, national certification exam s are being given at the conclusion of one of the 15 cou rses but the instructor must arrange when they register the course for the national certifica tion test to be administered at the conclusion. This is because there is a different registration p rocess and arrangements such as having enough proctors, who by law cannot be the course in structors). If the instructor d oes not make this arrangement, then the firefighter will have to arrange to take a national certi fication test separately. 5) Even if you take/pass som e national certification tests will not be officially recognized until you take the next level course. For example, Fire Officer 1 w on’ t be recognized on your tran script until you have passed the Firefighter 2 course. In other words, you will have a passing grade but w on’ t be issued the certificate until you take and p ass Firefighter 2. 6) A passing grade on the writ ten exams is 70. Usually, you get two opportunities to p a ss the paper and/or practical test. As an example, if a firefighter p a sse s the practical but not the written they will be given a s e c ond opportunity to p a ss the written without having to repeat the practical. However, if that firefighter d o e s not p a ss the written a secon d time, they will have to repeat both the written and practical again. If you decide to take a national certification exam the worst thing you can do is take it lightly. Don’ t put off studying and/or preparing or you will be disappointed at the results. Second-Alarm House Fire in Galeton

GALETON, PA - Goodyear Hose Company of Galeton, PA re spon ded to a house fire at 223 West Main Street in Galeton at 5:07 A.M. on January 9, 2024. Fully involved upon arrival, the photo show s the intensity of the fire which turned into a second-alarm. The fire marshal was dispatched to the loca tion. The hou se w as unoccupied at the time of the blaze. Goodyear would like to thank our mutual aid departments: Clymer, Coudersport, Wellsboro, Westfield, Germania, and Knoxville for their help. The Limerick Fire Dept, placed in service a 2022 Freightliner M2 C hassis with Custom Built Crew Body by Emergency Vehicle, Inc. (EVI). The vehicle has seating for six personnel, as well as a climate controlled crew area. The vehicle also has a 25kW Onan PTO Generator, 200-foot electrical reel with junction box, Electric Awning, 4 Winch Receivers, 10 Exterior Compartments, 2 Roof Compartments and a 6 cylinder cascade system. Going into service in 1991, the Metal Twp. Fire & Ambulance Company is the youngest fire com pany in Franklin County, PA. Though the com pany is young when com pared to oth ers in the state that have over a century of service, Metal Town ship itself has been around sin ce 1795. The name of the township cam e from the metal ore d ep o sits that were found during the mining era. It w as not until a board meeting in 1990 when concerned citizens voiced a need for closer fire and EMS serv ices that started the company. DALE FEEHRER
The township sits 31 miles Northwest of Chambersburg and to the immediate w est of Shippensburg bordered by Huntington and Fulton Coun ties. Metal Township sits in an area known as Path Valley, the valley lies in between the Kittatinny and Tuscarora Moun tains. The Metal Township Fire and Ambulance serv es 57 square miles of the township and it's 1700+ citizens and also provides services to Fannettsburg and mutual aid to Huntington and Fulton Counties. State Route 75 and a stretch of the PA Turnpike both cut through the township and is served by Company 21 as well.

When station 21 went into serv ice in their former high sch ool converted into a fire house, the apparatus con sisted of two 1969 ALF pumpers and an am bulance all that served other places prior. Today, the fleet c o n sists of an engine-rescue, brush, and ambulance all pur chased new, while the tanker w as purchased used from the Monroe Fire Company on Cum berland County, PA. The 15 ac tive members respond to about 350 ambulance related calls, while the fire calls average around 120 each year. The com pany rotates 3 career FFEMTS to help provide staffing, and drivers.

Apartment Blaze Displaces Residents in Catasauqua FRANK RORINSON

CATASAUQUA, PA - A fire in a two-and-a-half story converted apartment building sent the Cat asauqua FD, North Catasauqua FD, Medic 75 and Greenawalds Rescue 11 (RIT) to a working fire located at 729 Third St. on February 25th at around 11:27 A.M. The fire was on the first-floor with the possibility of 10 people trapped, but all were later accounted for. More manpower was requested and a second-alarm was transmitted. At one time during the fire, evacuation tones had to be activated. The fire was contained in about 30 minutes. Two families were made tem porarily homeless, and one person was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Summer is right around the cor ner - already. WLat does summer mean to you? For me it usually equates to much more time enjoying good weather with friends and fam ily. For many in the fire service it means time to ENJOY vacation(s). In the Bible, most o f Philippians is a positive book and has been re ferred to as “ the joy book.” The words "joy" or "rejoice" or "be glad" are used 17 different times in this book. In the very first chapter, Paul starts off talking about people. Flave you noticed that if relationships are bad, life stinks. If relationships are strained, life is difficult. If you have problems with people it kills the j oy in your life. D o you enjoy the peo ple around you? The people that
you work with? The people in your family? The people in your church? D o you enjoy the person that you're married to? Too many times we don't really enjoy the people in our lives, we tol erate them, we put up with them. We endure them. So, what does it take to enjoy the people in your life?
Be grateful for the good in people.
Philippians 1:3. St. Paul said: "I thank my G od even’ time I remember you." Paul said I like to remember the good things about people. And al though there is always going to be imperfection in people, I focus on the good times we've had,remember the positive experiences. What do you remember about people? The good experiences or the bad experi ences. When Paul said this he had not had an easy time in Philippi. When he went to Philippi he was arrested illegally, he was whipped, humili ated, thrown in prison. While in prison there was an earthquake. Then he was asked to leave town. Paul did not have a good time in Philippi, he had a bad time. Yet he says, when I
think o f you I remember the good things. "I thank G od even’ time I re member you. " Paul could have dwelt on the negative, the painful memories. But instead, he focused on the things he could be grateful for and that lead to his joy. Maybe you have, in your past, been hurt by a family member or a friend and you're still holding on to that hurt. Well, don’ t you think it’ s time you forgive and be grateful for the good in people. Pleasant memo ries are a choice. I can choose what I'm going to remember about the past. So, le t’ s enjoy spring as it lead us all to summer. L et’ s choose to ap preciate those who God has brought into our lives and forgive those who have trespassed against us. Lord, help us to enjoy the people in our lives. Once on the scene, they had a fire burning along the road and extending into a patch of bamboo. Brush 19, Res cu e Engine 19 and Tanker 19 arrived on scen e and knocked the fire down.

Keeping to his form, he has provided a b ook full o f in tense research and detail. After a preface, acknowledgements and a lengthy introduction (with photos included), the first chapter (Guns and Hoses) tells the story about the early days o f marine fire protec tion, which was provided by the military where it takes us through W W II and post W W II. The sec ond chapter covers the Great Lakes with boats from Chicago, Milwaukee Cleveland, Detroit and Buffalo, NY. In this chapter you will read about Milwaukee’ s most interesting LARC-V, an amphibi ous craft capable o f fighting fires on water and land since it had road capability. You can see two more o f them in Miami and Tampa chapters. The next chapter is N ew England featuring boats from Boston, Portland Maine and N ew Haven, Norwalk and Bridgeport and the Noroton FD in Darien Connecticut and Portsmouth, N ew Hampshire. In this chapter is shown a Boston high pressure hose and booster w agon o f Engine 26 (which worked in conjunction with the boats) that continued pumping even after it was nearly destroyed by a falling wall. The 1947 Mack was driven to the shops under its own power. The rest o f the other chapters cover the Atlantic Coast, G ulf o f M exico, Inland Cities, California’ s Pacific Coast, Pacific Northwest and Hawaii. Space re straints for this colum n preclude details o f these aforementioned areas except Hawaii. There is a special place in my heart for Hawaii because when in the Army, I spent 15 months training at Schofield Barracks on the Island o f Oahu before being deployed to Viet Nam. While on the island, I befriended many H onolulu chiefs and firefighters and had a tour o f the fireboat at the time, the Abner T. Longley. As was told to me, Mr. Longley was a resident who fought to have a fireboat, but passed away before it went into service. So it was named after him. The Moku Ahi, painted yellow, replaced the Longley years later, however was since sold, leaving Oahu without a full side fireboat. The Honolulu City and County Fire Department (one agency) covers the entire is land with the exception o f military bases, who have their own fire protection. This book is a must for anyone interested in fire department histo ries and fire apparatus. It is loaded with photos and every chapter will hold your interest.

This tanker holds 3,800gallons of water, has a 500-gpm pump, and is part of the Luzerne County Tanker Task Force which responds to major fire incidents that require portable ponds to be filled for drafting operations during the fire incident.

Dwelling Fire Quickly Controlled in Allentown ALLENTOWN, PA - On February 2nd, firefighters were dis patched to 1108 E. Tilghman St. for a dwelling fire. The first due E 13 reported heavy fire and sm oke coming from the front door and window of a two-story middle of row. An immediate second-alarm was requested. The bulk of the fire was quelled quickly with no extension to the second-floor or neighboring houses. The two residents of the dwelling were displaced.
