After helping hundreds of Westchester County herniated disc sufferers eliminated their pain, Local Doctor explains how…
“Back Pain Technology Cheats Mother Nature Helps Herniated Discs Heal Naturally… In As Little As 25 Minutes!” At Last! Westchester County Doctor Offers Technology That Doesn’t Just End SEVERE Pain From Herniated Discs, But Helps Your Body To Start Rebuilding Them… As Fast As Humanly Possible! Best Part: You can check it all out for FREE if you like! There is no doubt… technology has made all of our lives better… and easier. Just about every miraculous medical cure and comfort of modern living can be attributed to amazing breakthroughs in technology. Heck, laser eye surgery can give people who are almost as blind as a bat perfect 20/20 vision. How amazing is that? That’s why it’s no surprise that technology might be able to solve your back and neck pain from herniated/bulging discs or sciatica…for good. Here is why: Back and neck pain can be devastating. And nothing is worse than going to doctor after doctor… trying treatment after treatment… spending money you can’t afford… and still suffering in pain. That’s why… I bet you would love to instantly end your pain… without any risk what-soever… and have it never come back for the rest of your life? Well, that might NOT be so easy. But, what if there was a wonderful advancement in technology that, with a handful of simple, non-invasive treatments, could possibly have you out of pain and on your way to healing naturally? Better yet, what if this technology could possibly heal your herniated/bulging discs (instead of cutting it out like surgery) so you have the best chance to live pain-free and do all the things you want and love to do? And what if this technology was: 3 FDA cleared! 3 Proven safe and effective! 3 Allows your herniated discs to heal naturally without the risky and dangerous side effects of surgery! 3 Relieves pain fast… in some cases in as little as 25 minutes! Well, guess what? There is such technology and there is a very good chance it can help you… like it has already helps thousands of herniated/bulging disc and sciatica sufferers all around the country… No Matter How Bad Your Pain Is, How Long You’ve Been Suffering Or How Many Other Treatments And Doctors Have Failed You! Don’t laugh. It’s really true. Here’s proof…
When you have a herniated disc, compressive forces cause your spinal bones to come together… basically squashing your disc. The space in between your bones decreases and the soft, jello-like disc material leaks out. This disc material that leaks out is called a herniated disc and can cause severe pain, numbness and tingling in your neck, back, arms or legs when the herniation pushes into and “pinches” a nerve. So it makes sense, if you could slightly pull the spinal bones apart… that would open up the space, take the pressure off the disc, the disc off the nerve and solve the problem. Right? But the only problem is… how do you do that? For years and years, doctors have been trying to do it with traction. But traction has been proven ineffective and often very painful. Why? Traction doesn’t work because when you have a herniated or bulging disc, the area is injured and when you try to move, your muscles go into spasm. Spasm is your body’s way of trying to protect you from causing further injury. That’s why traction hurts so much. As soon as the traction starts… your muscles overprotect the area and spasm. But the good news is: Now there is technology that out-smarts your body’s natural spasm reaction. In other words: It fools mother nature! This technology is called non-surgical spinal decompression (NSSD) and here’s how it works… NSSD is very different from plain traction because it has advanced computer technology that actually senses your spinal muscles. When it starts to gently pull, it immediately knows when your muscles start to contract and it stops pulling. As soon as your muscles relax, it starts pulling again. The amazing thing is: the computer senses your muscles contraction so early… you don’t even feel what is going on. Which means you never feel any pain! In fact, the only thing most patients feel is… RELIEF!!! But the best part is: NSSD is able to gently separate your spinal bones which, in many cases, actually sucks the herniated disc material back into the disc where it belongs! This takes away your pain and allows your herniated and bulging discs to heal naturally!
And check this out: Treatments are pleasant and simple. All you have to do is lie on your back, listen to your favorite music, read a magazine… or… take a nap! The wonderful technology does everything while you simply RELAX the pain away! To sum up NSSD: • For most patients it is 100% painless… in fact many patients actually fall asleep during treatment! • Works fast! Most patients get relief after a handful of treatments – some after the very first! • Is non-invasive so it does not have the dangerous risks of surgery! • Gets to the root cause of the problem and helps it heal naturally! Isn’t modern technology wonderful? And wouldn’t you like to… Give This Great Technology A Try… For Free? If you would, there’s great news. There is a Doctor located at 1241 Mamaroneck Ave. right here in White Plains, NY who has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in this wonderful technology and has been treating herniated/bulging disc and sciatica patients with incredible success. His name is Dr. Jonathan Donath DC, MS and he is so excited about the results he’s been getting, he would like to share it with as many pain sufferers as possible. But There Is A Catch… There’s always a catch... isn’t there? Even though this technology has helped a majority of the patients Dr. Donath has treated… it is not a wonder cure and it does not help everyone.
On the right: healthy disc. Center: Herniated disc with soft disc material leaking out. On the left: Herniated disc material compressing or “pinching” nerve.
For that reason, Dr. Donath does a complete examination on every potential patient and only accepts you if he feels you are most likely to get the pain relief and outcome you are looking for. Dr. Donath’s Special Deal For You! Because the economy is so bad and Dr. Donath wants to help you if possible, he is offering the first 17 people who respond to this article a free consultation and NSSD qualification examination. And if you qualify for NSSD treatments, Dr. Donath will also give you one treatment for FREE! And if you do not qualify, Dr. Donath will help you find the best option for you. That’s why, if you suffer with pain from a herniated/bulging disc or sciatica you should call 914-259-8104 right now. When Barbara answers the phone, simply tell her you would like your free non-surgical spinal decompression consultation and examination. If you are one of the first 17, she will schedule you within the next few days. If you are in a lot of pain or already scheduled for surgery, tell Barbara and she will be sure to get you in immediately. Maybe even today.
On right: Herniated disc with spinal bones “squished” together. Center: NSSD slightly pulls the spinal bones apart, opens up the disc space and allows herniated material to move back into the disc. Left: Herniated material completely back in center of disc allows the disc to heal naturally. Your consultation and examination should take about 60 minutes. During this time you can get all of your questiones answered in a warm and friendly environment. You will know exactly what’s causing your pain and the best possible way to solve it. Dr. Donath will explain to you all your possible options along with his recomendations so you can make the best choice for YOU.
Why Limited To 17? Dr. Donath has limited the number he will accept right now to 17 because he does not believe patients should wait and they should also get the quality personal attention they deserve. When you go for your free visit, I’m sure you will see how unique and pleasant the experience is. It’s nice to be treated like a person and not a number or based on insurance coverage. It’s also nice to know exactly what’s causing your pain and how to relieve it as fast as possible. Dr. Donath’s favorite cases are the one’s that were able to cancel back surgery after only a handful of treatments. Dr. Donath also loves when a herniated disc patient that is in excruciating pain and thinks they’ve tried everything, lays down on the NSSD table, takes a 25 minute nap… and… wakes up with all their pain GONE! Just imagine how it would feel to have all your pain finally gone. Imagine going to bed and being able to sleep the entire night through… … and waking up refreshed and energized… ready to take on the brand new day – without the pain and stiffness that has been terrorizing you. And imagine finally knowing you have the solution to your herniated disc pain. Well, you may not have to just “imagine” anymore… because… NSSD might start relieving your pain… in just 25 minutes! So, if you’d like to see if you qualify and give this amazing technology a try for free… give Barbara a call at 914-259-8104 right now. Why wait one more day in pain when the solution may be one quick phone call away? Call now before someone else gets your free spot. One More Thing It’s Important… Ever since getting this wonderful technology, Dr. Donath’s office has been flooded with calls. For that reason, if when you call, the lines are busy or you go to voice mail… just keep calling back. The possibility of living pain-free is well worth the time and effort it may take you to get through and schedule your appointment. 914-259-8104

Dr. Kerline Marcelin, an ophthalmologist at Hudson Valley Hospital Center in Cortlandt Manor, is on a mission. Literally. Marcelin is one of the many physicians across Westchester County who gives back. In this case, Marcelin also went back to her roots to help another community in need. Marcelin, who teaches at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, traveled to Haiti from January 18-25 with the Crudem Foundation to work at the Sacred Heart Hospital (Hôpital Sacré Coeur) in Milot. What made the trip even more special is that Marcelin’s family is from Haiti. She specializes in treating glaucoma, which is often referred to as the “sneak thief of sight” because it has no symptoms and can end in blindness if left untreated. Marcelin says that it is a particular problem in third world countries like Haiti where treatment is not readily available. You can read more about Marcelin in this month’s edition of Healthcare News and, of course, we will follow-up on her trip to Haiti. We salute Marcelin and the countless other doctors, nurses and support staff giving back to Westchester County in a variety of ways.

Spark UpYour Marriage! Four ways to date
your wife all over again
Does your marriage feel flat? Studies show that after three years of marriage, many couples start complaining about their relationship being stale and boring. It’s no surprise then that most divorces occur within the first three years of marriage. How can you beat the marital blahs and consequently beat divorce? The answer is simple: Date your wife all over again. You can spark up your marriage by recapturing those same feelings you had when you first dated your wife. Here are four simple ways you can revitalize your marriage by dating your wife again. Continued on next page
Healthcare News - Westchester March, 2014
❤ expressions of Love You probably told your wife “I love you” hundreds of times a day when you first dated. Yet after a few years of marriage, some men can go days without telling their wife they love them. While it’s true that love can and should be shown through actions, women need to hear that you love them. It’s reassuring for them to hear it come from your mouth. In addition to telling your wife you love her, try writing a note that expresses your love. It shows your wife that you were thinking about her during the day.
❤❤
Small gifts show your wife that you’ve been thinking about her during the day. Find something that you know your wife enjoys and get it for her. If she likes flowers, get her flowers every now and then. Don’t wait for an occasion like Valentine’s Day to buy flowers. A caveat with gifts: don’t give gifts only when you want sex. Give gifts just to please her. If she’s happy, then you succeeded.
❤❤❤❤ Date Night When you first dated your wife, you probably took her out somewhere every weekend. It may have been Taco Bell, but you at least you made sure to spend an
evening out with her. When was the last time you actually went on a date with your wife? Establish a date night with your wife and treat this time with her as sacred. When you plan your week, block out an hour each week during which you’ll be taking your wife out. If a meeting comes up, reschedule the meeting. If you have kids, find a babysitter.
VaRICOSe VeINS? TIReD, aCHY LegS? We have a solution! Look and feel your best! Dr. Arlen G. Fleisher, has successfully treated thousands of patients with venous diseases such as varicose and spider veins, and their related symptoms. Premier Vein Centers offer state-of-the-art technology and techniques in the comfort of a doctor's office.
Courtesy When you first dated your wife, you probably did your best to behave as a gentleman. You opened doors for her or gave her your coat when she was cold. You had to do these things if you wanted to win her over. But all this probably ended a few weeks after the wedding. Chivalry is not confined just to courtship. Courtesy and consideration for your wife is just as important after the ceremony as it is before. Each day, perform little acts of kindness and courtesy with your wife. Open the car door for her, pack her lunch for work or school, and be on time with appointments with her.Gifts
❤❤❤ gifts When was the last time you bought an inexpensive gift as a F surprise for your wife for no other reason than just to please her?

Breakfast foods for a faster metabolism Protein Eating enough protein will ensure you both maintain and build muscle mass. Lean muscle mass is more metabolically active than fat tissue, so the more muscle you have, the more calories you'll burn-even when your body is at rest. Breakfast idea: Aim for at least 20 grams of protein at breakfast, which you'd get from a six ounce container of nonfat Greek yogurt topped with two tablespoons chopped walnuts and 1/2 cup berries. Nonfat or low-fat Greek yogurt, eggs or egg whites, nuts and seeds, and protein powder are all helpful ways to boost A.M. protein intake. Hot Sauce Capsaicin (the natural chemical in hot peppers that makes them hot) can give you a small metabolism boost. It increases your metabolism and body temperature by making your muscles burn energy as heat. Breakfast idea: Have an egg and egg white on whole wheat toast with 1/4 avocado and a hearty drizzle (as much as you can handle) of hot sauce or a sprinkle of red pepper flakes. Green Tea Both the caffeine in green tea and the natural plant chemicals will give you a small metabolism boost‌just be sure not to go overboard with milk, sugar and other additions. Aside from boosting your calorie burn, the drink is packed full of antioxidants that protect against disease and, of course, provide a natural glow to skin. Calcium-Rich Foods Some research indicates that people who are calcium deficient may have slower metabolisms. Aim for 1000mg each day from food or food plus supplements. Breakfast idea: Nonfat or low-fat milk, yogurt, and cheese are all good sources, as are calcium-fortified dairy alternatives (almond milk). Whip up a smoothie using 1 1/2 cups milk or fortified milk alternative and you're already almost a a quarter of the way to your daily needs.

The Importance of Elder Law: You must protect your assets, family and future now! For nearly 30 years, practicing law has been Ely Rosenzveig’s passion. His inspiration? That comes from, among other things, his life experiences, the people he has met, and the clients he works with every day. The widow who didn’t have a will and was concerned about her financial future. The family that was reeling from health issues impacting their elderly loved ones without any planning in place to address their needs, leaving them with the prospect of exorbitantly expensive care needs. Ely Rosenzveig was a rabbi in Westchester County. The plight of some in his congregation moved him to practice elder law and trust and estate planning. He would become a senior partner at one of the foremost elder law firms in the country, but left to join hands with his son, Ariel. “I really jumped at the opportunity to work in this area of law,” Ely Rosenzveig said. “I think it’s special kind of work. To help people and work with your son is incredibly rewarding. Ariel is a great asset – a wonderful and gifted young attorney.” The law firm of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C. in White Plains practices in all areas of elder law, including trust and
estate planning, administration, and litigation, tax counsel, asset protection and special needs planning, Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security disability benefits, guardianships, long term care planning, spousal recovery claims, and Medicaid lien resolutions. Father and son pride themselves on an unyielding commitment to the zealous advocacy of their clients’ interests. Estate planning is one of the most important steps any person can take to make sure that their final property and health care wishes are honored, and that loved ones are provided for in their absence. A comprehensive estate plan can resolve a number of legal questions that arise whenever anyone dies. Appropriate estate and Medicaid planning can help preserve assets, reduce taxes, and help individuals qualify for Medicaid. “People don’t want to talk about illness and death,” Ariel Rosenzveig said. “It’s a tough subject. People are reluctant, but the type of measures that we implement for our clients can save them and their loved ones a lot of money. Proper planning will help provide financial and emotional security for all involved.”
The firm is very experienced in making sure that those eligible for Medicaid and Medicare get the benefits they deserve. Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C. has been very successful in negotiating the complex bureaucratic minefield in which Medicaid is now mired, a dynamic only exacerbated with the passage of the Deficit reduction Act of 2006, and the new rules regarding the look-back requirements, and penalty period calculations for non-Medicaid exempt asset transfers. The firm has achieved remarkable results for clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from getting Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse for Medicaid benefits provided. No matter what the case, Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C. prides itself on working with each client individually, catering to each one’s diverse needs. Estate planning should begin at a young age with a will, health care proxy, living
will and durable power of attorney. As you grow older and accumulate assets, it is especially important that you speak with an experience elder law attorney issues pertaining to issues concerning Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and further estate planning. Elder law is about more than just saving money. When viewed properly, elder law is about two major things: First, ensuring that your personal wishes — financial, medical, and legal — are carried out; and second, understanding that elder law is a family matter affecting an intricate web of individual relationships. Knowing that your potential long-term care needs have already been addressed frees you and your family from needless worry. And Ely and Ariel Rosenzveig are there to help their cherished clients every step of the way. “We want every client to feel like they are our only client,” Ely Rosenzveig said. “We are totally committed to ensuring that we be fully responsive to our clients’ every need. For us, this is tremendously rewarding. It is the very reason why we have become elder law attorneys.”

Kids and Food: 10 tips for parents It’s no surprise that parents might need some help understanding what it means to eat healthy. From the MyPlate food guide to the latest food fad, it can be awfully confusing. The good news is that you don’t need a degree in nutrition to raise healthy kids. Following some basic guidelines can help you encourage your kids to eat right and maintain a healthy weight. 4. Start them young. Food preferences are developed early in life, so offer variety. Likes and dislikes begin forming even when kids are babies. 5. Rewrite the kids’ menu. Who says kids only want to eat hot dogs, pizza, burgers, and macaroni and cheese? When eating out, let your kids try new foods and they might surprise you with their willingness to experiment. 6. Drink calories count. Soda and other sweetened drinks add extra calories and get in the way of good nutrition. Water and milk are the best drinks for kids.
7. Put sweets in their place. Occasional sweets are fine, but don’t turn dessert into the main reason for eating dinner. 8. Food is not love. When foods are used to reward kids and show affection, they may start using food to cope with stress or other emotions. 9. Kids do as you do. Be a role model and eat healthy yourself. Choose nutritious snacks, eat at the table, don’t skip meals. 10. Limit TV and computer time. When you do, you’ll avoid mindless snacking and encourage activity.
Top Pediatric Dentist in Westchester 5 years and counting!
Here are 10 key rules to live by: 1. Parents control the supply lines. You decide which foods to buy and when to serve them. Though kids will pester their parents for less nutritious foods, adults should be in charge when deciding which foods are regularly stocked in the house. Kids won’t go hungry. 2. Schedule regular meal and snack times. From the foods you offer, kids get to choose what they will eat. Kids need to have some say in the matter. 3. Quit the “clean-plate club.” Let kids stop eating when they feel they’ve had enough. Lots of parents grew up under the clean-plate rule, but that approach doesn’t help kids listen to their own bodies when they feel full.

A heart screening before competing?
Some cardiac tests aren’t needed for all young athletes
PAGE 14
March, 2014
If you have a son or daught er active in sports, you’ve probably heard the marketing and promotion of electrocardiogram (EKG) and echocardiogram testing for all young athletes before they participate in school or spare-time sports. Advertisers point to a tragic phenomenon known as sudden cardiac death (SCD), which claims the lives of a very few U.S. child and adolescent sports participants each year. No one disputes the worthy goal of protecting kids. But not all young athletes really need pre-participation cardiac testing, says Michael Gewitz, M.D., Physician-in- Chief at Westchester Medical Center’s Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital and its Chief of Pediatric Cardiology. For youngsters with no known risk factors, such detailed testing, which is not inexpensive, may cause more harm than it uncovers, says Dr. Gewitz. “This screening is not perfect,” he explains. “There are a host of cardiac problems these tests do not pick up. On the other hand, the tests can be overly sensitive

and produce a lot of false-positive findings. Such inaccurate results can create unnecessary anxiety for parents and children and may lead to inappropriate restrictions.” For almost all kids, regular vigorous exercise is one of the keys to a healthy cardiac future. So which young athletes should be given an EKG or echocardiogram to assess their heart risk before they take the field? Specifically, those with a known risk of or predisposition toward heart problems, says Dr. Gewitz. “Any family history of sudden cardiac arrest is one red flag,” says Dr. Gewitz. And Christa Miliaresis, M.D., a pediatric cardiology exercise specialist at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, agrees. “In a physical, a doctor must ask if the child ever passed out or fainted during sports,” she says. If either of these questions draws a yes, EKG and/or echocardiogram testing can be an important next step to evaluate the danger and guide appropriate parental decisions.

Childhood obesity Turning the Tide
Being overweight carries a host of health problems, including higher risks for diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. There are many ways you can help your child live a healthy lifestyle and avoid childhood obesity. Here are some guidelines:
•
Your child should engage in some physical activity for one to two hours every day. It would be ideal for her to get outside for sports, tag or jump rope.
•
Limit screen time to one hour a day — and no screen time at all for children younger than 2 years of age.
•
Don’t give your child soda or other sugary beverages such as sports drinks and juices. Water and milk are the best beverages for children.
•
Make your meals as healthy as possible. Serve whole-grain foods, such as w hole-grain bread, cereal, rice and pasta; protein-rich foods, such as lean meats, seafood, beans, nuts and seeds; calciumrich foods, such as low-fat milk, fat-free or low-fat yogurt and cheese, and don’t forget fruits and vegetables, and stay away from fried foods. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has handy Daily Food Plans & Worksheets to help you make healthy food choices based on your child’s age.
•
Model healthy behavior. If you exercise and eat well, you are providing a great example for your children.

REMOVING LIFE INSURANCE RATINGS By Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC Most people believe that after you buy a life insurance policy everything about that policy is set in stone. This is simply not the case at all. If you can prove via paramedical testing that you stopped smoking or you lost 50 pounds, you are certainly eligible to re-underwrite your policy and attain a less expensive annual premium. Yours truly has done this dozens of times. In fact, non-smoking status can decrease your policy premiums by as much as 50% depending upon your age. It is also a great incentive to get your loved one to quit. In order to make a profit, a life insurance company needs to calculate policy premiums that fund future claims and cover administrative costs. The cost of insurance is determined using mortality tables calculated by its own actuaries. Actuaries are professionals who determine future probabilities based upon mathematics, primarily historical statistics. Mortality tables are statistically based tables showing expected annual mortality rates. It is possible to derive life expectancy estimates from these mortality assumptions. The three main variables in a mortality table are commonly age, gender, and use of tobacco. The mortality tables provide a baseline for the cost of insurance, but in practice these mortality tables are used in conjunction with the health and family history of the individual applying for a policy to determine premiums and insurability. Most life insurance companies separate applicants into four general categories. These categories are preferred best, preferred non-smoker, standard non-smoker, and standard smoker. Preferred best is reserved only for the healthiest individuals in the general population. This may mean, that the proposed insured has no adverse medical history, is not under medication for any condition, and his/her family (immediate and extended) have no history of early-onset cancer, diabetes, or other chronic health conditions. Most people fall in the standard category. Professional occupation, travel history, and lifestyle factor into whether the proposed insured will be granted a policy and which category the insured falls into. For example, a person who would otherwise be classified as preferred best may be denied a policy if he or she travels to a high risk country. Underwriting practices vary from insurer to insurer and they are not all the same. Underwriting criteria that can be changed to attain a better premium: ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢
Smoking Height to Weight Ratio Blood work resulting in lower cholesterol, triglycerides, etc. Hazardous sports or activities like: piloting aircraft, scuba diving, hang gliding, automobile racing, etc. Driving Record
Most people do not know that they can lower their life insurance premiums by changing behavior and/or their health status even after their policy has been in force for years. Many carriers will allow you to review your policy to re-qualify for a better rating as soon as one to three years after issue. If you have not considered this already, contact your agent today. For more information about the Life Insurance planning please call Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC at 914-682-2190 or toll free at 877-676-9900. Soup’s on! The “Souper” Way to Cleanse and Lose Weight There’s nothing like sipping a warm, soothing bowl of soup in the winter. But did you know that it’s one of the best ways to shed extra end-of-year pounds, cleanse the system, and boost your immunity all at once? A low-sodium, nutritious soup rehydrates as it nourishes and flushes waste from the body. It’s been documented that people who eat one or more bowls of soup per day lose more weigh than those who eat the same number of calories but don’t eat soup. Your immune system needs a lot of minerals to function properly and the typical Western diet doesn’t always make the grade. Slowly simmered foods gently extract the energetic and therapeutic properties of the ingredients, preserving the nutritional value of the food. And the nutrients in soups are better assimilated into the body than any other type of prepared food. So instead of filling up with empty calories just to not be hungry, fill up on soup and get the full nutritional value. However, remember: Homemade soup is best – many commercials soups are loaded with salt, sugar, and chemicals. Make sure you cook over low heat because boiling can destroy as much as half of the vitamins found in vegetables.

group of Hudson Valley Hospital Center employees were honored recently for acts of kindness when the Hospital kicked off a year-long celebration of its 125th Anniversary. More than 100 people packed the hospital lobby for a presentation of the Hospital’s “Acts of Kindness Awards” presented by HVHC President John C. Federspiel. Recognized at the event were: Nancy Montgomery and her husband the late Jim Lovell of Cold Spring. Lovell, who died in the Metro North train derailment in December, was recognized posthumously as part of the Hospital 125th Anniversary’s theme – 125 Acts of Kindness. Also honored were Ellen Buccatello of Peekskill, an advocate for the homeless and hungry, chaplain and member of the Hospital’s Ethics Committee, and a team of employees who head the Hospital’s annual Santa’s Helpers holiday gift drive. “Kindness is at the heart of everything we do so I am very pleased that we have chosen Acts of Kindness as our theme for
Ed McDonald Jr., Chairman of the Board of Directors. “I am very proud to be a part of this Hospital family. It is a very special place that combines medical excellence with a caring, community spirit.” Hudson Valley Hospital Center was opened in 1889 in the City of Peekskill after a group of community minded women raised $1,800 to purchase property on lower South Street. The hospital was known as the Helping Hand Hospital until 1911 when it was incorporated as Peekskill Hospital. In 1966, the hospital moved to its current location in Cortlandt Manor. It was renamed Hudson Valley Hospital Center in 1992 to reflect its new status as a regional facility. WHUD’s Kacey Morabito Grean served as Mistress of Ceremonies at the event and there was a performance by violinist Daisy Jopling. Public officials including Westchester County Health Commissioner Sherlita Amler and mayors and supervisors of Peekskill, Cold Spring, Cortlandt Manor and Yorktown attended.

How much is too much?
Our bodies need nutrients to stay healthy. The body makes a certain amount itself; the rest comes from our diet. As we age, food intake and metabolism changes increase our risk for nutritional deficiency. Vitamin and mineral supplements may become necessary. Consult your doctor to determine your specific needs; supplements may have an adverse effect on medications. Supplements are not a substitute for a nutritious diet! The absorption of vitamin B-12 from meat, salmon, cod, diary and fortified cereals is affected by stomach acid. Twenty percent of people over fifty do not have enough stomach acid to absorb sufficient amounts of vitamin B-12. A deficiency can lead to anemia, memory loss and gait problems. The recommended daily dosage of vitamin B-12 is 2mg or less. An excess of any vitamin may cause harm. Folic acid (folate) , found in dark green, yellow and orange fruits and vegetables, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds and fortified grains (pasta and flour), can protect against cardiovascular disease and stroke, help the liver eliminate toxins, promote growth and reproduction of body cells and aid in the formation of red blood cells and bone marrow. Taking 1mg (1000 micrograms) or less of folic acid supplements daily is unlikely to cause harm. A major antioxidant, Vitamin E, found in fatty foods such as nuts and oils supplies oxygen to the blood, provides nourishment to cells, prevents blood clots and slows cellular aging. The recommended daily amount of vitamin E for men is 4mg and 3mg for women. Vitamin C, a major antioxidant found in fruits and vegetables, is essential for healthy teeth, gums and bones. It also helps heal wounds, fractures and scar tissue; builds resistance to infections; and assists in the prevention and treatment of colds. Vitamin C is also known to block damage caused by free radicals which are largely responsible for the aging process, and may play a role in cancer, heart disease and conditions like arthritis. Calcium and vitamin D from dairy products, green vegetables and nuts is needed to maintain strong bone health. Vitamin D, which improves the absorption of calcium and phosphorous, diminishes as we age because of our inability to digest dairy foods. Our skin produces vitamin D from the sun, however as the skin ages, its ability to produce vitamin D significantly decreases. The recommended daily dose for adults is 700mg of calcium and ten micrograms (0.01mg) of vitamin D.

Five foods you think are healthy but aren’t Many people don’t realize they’re sabotaging their attempts at healthy living with food and drinks that masquerade as nutritious but actually aren’t. Eating better is often a simple matter of reading labels and nutrition information to figure out exactly what’s in whatever it is you’re ingesting. Many products purport to be healthy when they’re actually packed with sugar, preservatives and other chemicals. Instead, aim for the fewest ingredients possible, and eat the real stuff instead of faux health food. Here are five primary offenders: 1. Pre-made salads Good for you! You went out to Chili’s and ordered a salad because you’re trying to be healthy. Sorry, but you should have ordered nachos, southwest eggrolls or loaded potato skins, because any of those is healthier than some of Chili’s calorically blessed salads. Same is true of most fast-casual eateries and fast food restaurants. Once you add cheese, meat, croutons and creamy dressings to a salad, the fat piles up fast. Sure, taco salads are great, but if you must indulge, try one with black beans, grilled chicken, a little cheese and salsa instead of salad dressing. 2. Diet sodas Please tell me you know by now that diet soda is just as bad for you as regular soda and part of the reason that Americans struggle so much with obesity. Diet soda can increase your risk of metabolic syndrome, making you an ideal candidate for heart disease. The artificial sweeteners in diet soda disrupt your body’s ability to regulate calorie intake, causing you to eat more and gain more weight. 3. Dried fruit In some fruits, dehydration causes the nutrients to become more concentrated, which is great. However, many dried fruits, such as cranberries and cherries, often have added sugar, along with nasty preservatives called nitrites. Also, when you eat an apple, you’re consuming all the water in the fruit, which helps hydrate and fill you up. When you eat 20 dried apple rings like they’re chips, you’ll probably still be hungry, and you’ve just eaten the equivalent of several apples. Instead, just eat fruit. It’s cheaper than the dried stuff, anyway. 4. Beef jerky Pure protein. What could be bad about that, right? Wrong. Though the protein in jerky is great, in order to dehydrate the meat and keep it safe for consumers, nitrites and other preservatives are added. Nitrites produce carcinogens in the body, which could contribute to colon cancer. Beef jerky is also usually loaded with salt. Because it’s too delicious to give up on entirely (and can’t not eat beef jerky on road trips), look for organic jerky with no preservatives and as little sodium as possible. 5. energy energy bars If you must eat an energy bar, think of it like a candy bar. It’s an indulgence or a sweet snack, not a meal replacement. Energy bars are loaded with sugar, and most of them are also packed with enriched white flour, saturated fats and corn syrup, in addition to the few vitamins the wrapper touts on the front. Additionally, a small energy bar isn’t likely to fill you up for long. Lara Bars and Kind Bars are made with mostly nuts, and the sugar is kept to a minimum. When you need a burst of energy in a hurry, try those instead.

What do doctors do to treat their own pain? As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes—those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of “conservative” therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I havepersonally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath’s outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regimen I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I wasliterally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath’s office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well. My own patients and family members have become “believers” in Dr. Donath’s abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable. I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I’m constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked. When I moved to Westchester, I met Dr. Jonathan Donath. In just a couple of sessions with Dr. Donath, the pain completely disappeared. If it hadn't happened to me, I wouldn't have believed it. During my last flare up, I was expecting to be on my back for 2-3 days and in pain for 2 weeks. Instead, after one session with Dr. Donath, I was able to walk; two more sessions and I was fine. I could walk, bend down and I had almost no pain. Since that last back episode, Dr. Donath has helped me with my tendonitis in my right hand and with my chronic knee problems. I recommend Dr. Donath to everyone with back, muscle or joint pain. Even if you have not had relief with other treatments and other Chiropractors, give Dr. Donath a chance. I did and he changed my life. Eugene Dinkevich MD, Mount Vernon, NY It’s my great pleasure to write about Westchester Spinal Decompression Center. I really don’t have words to express my feelings about the care I got in last 3 months. I was almost handicapped, living with terrible pain all the time, crippling my day to day life. I am a medical doctor and work in a hospital with all sorts of amazing physicians, but after seeing a physical therapist, getting epidural steroids injections, many orthopedists and neurosurgeons, finally my destination lead me to see Dr Jonathan Donath. With great skepticism, I lied down for spinal decompression therapy. It was unbelievable that after only two initial sessions, my radiating pain down my leg had almost disappeared. Gradually, I started getting better, started doing exercises that they gave me midway through the treatment. Now, I am doing all my daily activities without any pain. I highly recommend Dr Jonathan and his colleague Dr Kavita for any problems related to the musculoskeletal system, you will definitely feel at home and will get better.
