Where do doctors go to treat their own pain? “As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes-those all-toocommon, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of "conservative" therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I have personally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath's outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regime, I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I was literally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Robert Sidlow MD, MBA Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath's office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix Internist, New York, NY the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well. My own patients and family members have become "believers" in Dr. Donath's abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.” “I had been experiencing lower back pain for at least 6-7 months before I had visited Dr. Donath's office. Prior to this, I had tried doing stretches at home, taking some medications, acupuncture, but despite this, things did not improve. In fact, symptoms only progressed and became unbearable. It was so difficult to get out of bed in the morning, work my 12 hour shifts as a physician in Urgent Care and do my daily work outs, which I enjoyed so much. My colleague at work, who is also a physician and patient of Dr. Donath, recommended I see him and I was so glad I did. On my first visit, he patiently listened to my story and examined me carefully. He took his time to discuss possible diagnoses, sent me for an MRI that day, and saw me the next day to discuss results, and potential treatment plan. I listened to his advice and began spinal decompression, which was the best decision I have ever made. After a few visits, my pain started to subside and shortly I became pain-free. Dr. Donath and his staff are knowledgeable and very professional. I am so grateful to them for getting me back to my normal life. I highly recommend him to anyone who is having back pain.” Dr. Dawn Garcen, MD Family Medicine/Urgent Care, White Plains, NY “I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I'm constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked. When I moved to Westchester, I met Dr. Jonathan Donath. In just a couple of sessions with Dr. Donath, the pain completely disappeared. If it hadn't happened to me, I wouldn't have believed it. During my last flare up, I was expecting to be on my back for 2-3 days and in pain for 2 weeks. Instead, after one session with Dr. Donath, I was able to walk; two more sessions and I was fine. I could walk, bend down and I had almost no pain. Since that last back episode, Dr. Donath has helped me with my tendonitis in my right hand and with my chronic knee problems. I recommend Dr. Donath to everyone with back, muscle or joint pain. Even if you have not had relief with other treatments and other chiropractors, give Dr. Donath a chance. I did and he changed my life.” Dr. Eugene Dinkevich, MD Division Chief of General Pediatrics—SUNY Downstate Medical Center Brooklyn, NY

“I really don't have words to express my feelings about the care I got in the last 3 months. I was almost handicapped, living with terrible pain all the time, crippling my day to day life. I am a medical doctor and work in a hospital with all sorts of amazing physicians, but after seeing a physical therapist, getting epidural steroids injections, many orthopedists and neurosurgeons, finally my destination lead me to see Dr Jonathan Donath. With great skepticism, I lied down for spinal decompression therapy. It was unbelievable that after only two initial sessions, my radiating pain down my leg had almost disappeared. Gradually, I started getting better, started doing exercises that they gave me midway through the treatment. Now, I am doing all my daily activities without any pain. I highly recommend Dr Jonathan for any problems related to the musculoskeletal system, you will definitely feel at home and will get better.” Dr. Pankaj Jain—Pediatric Cardiologist, New York, NY

“Dr. Donath is amazing. As an internist, I have to decide between traditional western medicine and chiropractic care for my patients with back pain and other joint-related complaints. Dr. Donath's thorough and comprehensive approach to care allows my patients to get relief faster and less invasively. The result is invariably positive. One of my patients said he got his life and golf game back after seeing Dr. Donath. Another said that he was able to get rid of a pain she had for over 5 years in just a few sessions. I can confirm his success first-hand: Dr. Donath relieved my chronic pain with multiple techniques: manipulation, spinal decompression, vitamins and supplements, exercise and stretching. His hands-on approach and love of his work is reflected by the excellent results he gets. I continue to send my friends, family and patients to Dr. Donath because I know he gets results.” Dr. Annebeth Litt, MD Internist, White Plains, NY “My wife actually went to Dr. Donath before I did. She was experiencing terrible neck pain and literally could not move her neck in any direction without excruciating pain. It was so bad that initially she was unable to drive herself to Dr. Donath’s office. After only two spinal decompression treatments by Dr. Donath, she was able to resume driving. Following a few weeks of treatment, she was pain free and her range of motion was back to normal. A few years later, I started having arm and elbow pain. I tweaked something in my arm while working out and anti-inflammatory medication and pain killers did not help. The problem affected my ability to function as an eye surgeon. I saw Dr. Donath who diagnosed my condition as lateral epicondylitis (more commonly known as tennis elbow). He treated me utilizing Active Release Techniques and I improved almost immediately. He also gave me numerous exercises to do at home. After three visits to his office, my pain was completely gone. I highly recommend Dr. Donath to my family, friends, and patients who experience any sort of musculoskeletal pain.” Dr. Harold Weissman, MD Ophthalmic Surgeon Lenox Hill Hospital New York, NY

GREAT HAIR!!

No Pain/ No Surgery/ No Drugs/ No Side Effects…no kidding!

Lasers can now GROW HAIR Dr. Christine Gould is a graduate of Cornell University Medical College and Yale University. She has extensive experience in both emergency medicine and medical aesthetics. She opened her own practice in 2013 and has been diligently bringing the most effective technologies to her lucky patients at All About You Medical Spa located at 79 S Benson Rd, Fairfield CT 06824.

(203) 292-5559 www.hairgrowct.com

I had trouble believing this myself, but what if I told you that there exists a recently FDA approved laser that can grow your hair back? It feels like an episode from a SciFi movie, only better because it is true, and the FDA agrees. Pioneers in laser medicine have discovered that Low Level Laser Light Therapy (known as LLLT) can resuscitate dying hair follicles and stimulate hair to grow again. How does it work? The laser heals the follicle by improving blood circulation, nutrient flow, and rate of removal of harmful DHT (from testosterone) among other positive benefits. On a cellular level, this means improved metabolism and protein synthesis, increased ATP (energy) production to repair the weakened follicle and cellular stimulation. All this means prevention of hair loss, improved hair quality and hair growth. But don’t take just my word for it, take the FDA’s. The FDA looked at data from thousands of patients who received a full treatment cycle, and they found it to be SAFE and EFFECTIVE. There is no pain, no surgery, no drugs, no side effects. And it works. This all translates into a modern day medical miracle. Very few people are not candidates for benefit from this device, whether you are young or old, male of female. (If all your hair is dormant, and your scalp is shiny bald with no inkling of remaining hair, you would have been excluded from the study). Of course, it takes a commitment to your hair. Each cycle is 20”, and you need to complete a 48 treatment cycle… so far, hair doesn’t grow from trees…but it can grow from a laser!

8 Tips for Exercising in Summer Heat

PAGE 8

July, 2016

Healthcare News - Fairfield County

Summer is the perfect time to go outside and have fun. It's one of my favorite times of year because there are so many outdoor activities to choose from. Everything is more fun outside, whether you're swimming, running or cycling. But the summer heat can be a problem if you're not careful, particularly in areas with extreme heat and humidity. If you don't drink enough water, you can get dehydrated and suffer from light-headedness and nausea. If not recognized, dehydration can even result in kidney failure and or, in extreme cases, death. However, if you drink too much water without replenishing your electrolytes, you can experience hyponatremia. This can lead to confusion, nausea, muscle cramps, seizures or even death in extreme cases.

1 Here are some things to keep in mind when it comes to exercising in the heat:

2 3

The time of day is important. Unless you are training for an event that takes place in the daytime heat, avoid exercising from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It's the hottest part of day. Generally, the early morning is the best time to workout, especially if it's going to be scorcher that day.

Wear loose, light-colored. The lighter color will help reect heat, and cotton material will help the evaporation of sweat. You may also want to try specially designed, "hitech" running shirts and shorts. They are often made from material meant to keep you cool. If you can, choose shaded trails or pathways that keep you out of the sun.

4 5 6 7 8

Sunscreen is a must. I use SPF 45 just to be safe. It's important to protect your skin. You can get burned and suer sun damage to your skin even on cloudy days.

Stay hydrated. Before you go out, drink a glass or two of water. Carry a bottle of water or even a hydration pack such as the CamelBak. Take a drink every 15 minutes, even when you're not thirsty. When you're done with your workout, have a few more glasses of water.

Replenish your electrolyte and salt intake while exercising. I like to use SUCCEED capsules--small, simple packs of sodium and electrolytes that keep my system in check.

Check the weather forecast before you start your workout. If there's a heat advisory, meaning high ozone and air pollution, you might want to take your workout indoors. These pollutants can damage your lungs.

Most importantly, listen to your body. Stop immediately if you're feeling dizzy, faint or nauseous.

DO

Give your body time to adjust to summer. NATA guidelines say it can take from 10 to 14 days to acclimatize to warmer weather. When the temperature first starts to climb, take your workouts down a notch: do fewer intervals, or save that long endurance ride for a cooler day.

DON’T

Protein-Load Before Your Workout. Some research has suggested that too much protein before a sweat session could elevate your basal temperature, making you feel even hotter. You're better off saving the protein bar for after your workout, when it will help you rebuild muscle.

DO

Take frequent water breaks. Once you start thinking about a nice, cold glass of water, you're probably already 1 to 2 percent dehydrated, says Jessica Matthews, an exercise physiologist for the American Council on Exercise (ACE).

DON’T

Ignore That Sluggish Feeling. It's 80 degrees, the humidity is above 60 percent, and halfway through your jog, you start to feel like you're wading through a swamp. July is Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month Juvenile arthritis (JA) is not a disease in itself. Also known as pediatric rheumatic disease, JA is an umbrella term used to describe the many autoimmune and inflammatory conditions or pediatric rheumatic diseases that can develop in children under the age of 16. Juvenile arthritis affects nearly 300,000 children in the United States. Unfortunately, there is no cure for juvenile arthritis, although with early diagnosis and aggressive treatment, remission is possible.

The goal of treatment is to relieve inflammation, control pain and improve the child’s quality of life. Most treatment plans involve a combination of medication, physical activity, eye care and healthy eating. The Arthritis Foundation understands the needs of families with juvenile arthritis are unique and pressing. Learn more about our research efforts through our work with CARRA and our involvement in www.arthritis.org PARTNERS.

Top Pediatric Dentist in Westchester 5 years and counting! Types of Juvenile Arthritis

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Considered the most common form of arthritis, JIA includes six subtypes: oligoarthritis, polyarthritis, systemic, enthesitis-related, juvenile psoriatic arthritis or undifferentiated. Juvenile dermatomyositis. An inflammatory disease, juvenile dermatomyositis causes muscle weakness and a skin rash on the eyelids and knuckles. Juvenile lupus. Lupus is an autoimmune disease. The most common form is systemic lupus erythematosus, or SLE. Lupus can affect the joints, skin, kidneys, blood and other areas of the body. Juvenile scleroderma. Scleroderma, which literally means “hard skin,” describes a group of conditions that causes the skin to tighten and harden. Kawasaki disease. This disease causes blood-vessel inflammation that can lead to heart complications. Mixed connective tissue disease. This disease may include features of arthritis, lupus dermatomyositis and scleroderma, and is associated with very high levels of a particular antinuclear antibody called anti-RNP. Fibromyalgia. This chronic pain syndrome is an arthritis-related condition, which can cause stiffness and aching, along with fatigue, disrupted sleep and other symptoms. More common in girls, fibromyalgia is seldom diagnosed before puberty.

Ten Tips for a Heart-Healthy Summer PAGE 14

July, 2016

Healthcare News - Fairfield County

from the American Heart Association|American Stroke Association to keep you and your family healthy this summer

The summer can bring many happy memories – family vacations, summer camp, trips to the ocean, picnics and enjoying the sunset or bonfire. No matter what your summer traditions include, be sure to keep your health at the top of your summer list. According to the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association, heart disease and stroke remain the No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death in the U.S., yet 80 percent of these diseases are preventable with simple lifestyle modifications, such as healthy eating and regular exercise. “Summer is the perfect time to start or build on a heart-healthy lifestyle. And the good news is that fitness and healthy living can be fun! Try a new sport or activity to get your 30 minutes of physical activity in per day. Biking, swimming, rollerblading—it’s all great exercise,” said Virna Little, PsyD, LCSW-r, MBA, Senior Vice President Psychosocial Services/Community Affairs For The Institute for Family Health, and AHA/ASA board member. “Try out fresh, seasonal produce or new, healthier recipes to cook. Healthy foods are delicious and can be prepared quickly so you’re back outside again enjoying summer!” The AHA/ASA reminds everyone to take precautions when exercising in the heat. “It’s especially important for those on heart medications or those with pre-existing health issues to use caution when exercising in the heat,” she said, “And if you’re just starting out with exercise, start out slowly and build up.” Here are the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association’s top 10 tips for a heart-healthy summer:

1. Learn Hands-Only CPR. Days by the pool and ocean can be fun, but always be prepared for emergencies. Hands-Only CPR has only two steps: If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, 1) Call 9-1-1, and 2) Press hard and fast in the center of the chest. View the AHA’s one-minute video at www.heart.org/handsonlycpr or sign up for a CPR course at www.cpr.heart.org.

2. Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids (preferably water) throughout the day and before, during and after working out to maintain salt-water balance. Avoid caffeine and alcoholic beverages.

3. Exercise smarter, not harder. Plan your workout for the cooler parts of the day – either early morning or early evening when the sun’s heat is at its least. If you must exercise during the hottest part of the day or in high humidity, decrease exercise intensity and duration. And remember, you can get a great workout indoors by going to a gym or walking at the mall. 4. Dress the part. Wear minimal amounts of clothing that allow for quick evaporation of sweat. Choose lightweight, light-colored and breathable fabrics, such as cotton.

5. Can’t get to the Mediterranean? Eat like you’re there! Choose fresh fruits, veggies, small amounts of lean meat or fish to grill or sauté. Grilled fruit is a quick and light dessert.

6. Pack to play. When taking a family road trip, plan to incorporate regular physical activity into your daily routine. Pack a football, soccer ball, Frisbee or paddle ball so that you can be physically active while away.

7. Enjoy fruit pops. Homemade freezer pops are an easy, fun treat for kids to make and enjoy. Mash up fruit like peaches, grapes, berries or watermelon and put into paper cups, insert a Popsicle stick through a plastic wrap cover, and freeze overnight. 8. Protect yourself from the sun. Wear wide-brimmed hats, light, longsleeve shirt cover-ups, and always apply water-resistant sunscreen with at least SPF 15 and reapply sunscreen every 2 hours.

9. Head indoors. When the heat gets unbearable, try indoor activities at your local gym or rec center like basketball, swimming, yoga or racquetball. Or stay home and exercise to a fitness video online.

Shade You can reduce your risk of skin damage and skin cancer by seeking shade under an umbrella, tree, or other shelter before you need relief from the sun. Your best bet to protect your skin is to use sunscreen or wear protective clothing when you’re outside—even when you’re in the shade. Sunglasses Sunglasses protect your eyes from UV rays and reduce the risk of cataracts. They also protect the tender skin around your eyes from sun exposure. Sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays offer the best protection. Most sunglasses sold in the United States, regardless of cost, meet this standard. Wrap-around sunglasses work best because they block UV rays from sneaking in from the side.

Clothing When possible, long-sleeved shirts and long pants and skirts can provide protection from UV rays. Clothes made from tightly woven fabric offer the best protection. A wet T-shirt offers much less UV protection than a dry one, and darker colors may offer more protection than lighter colors. Some clothing certified under international standards comes with information on its ultraviolet protection factor.

Hat For the most protection, wear a hat with a brim all the way around that shades your face, ears, and the back of your neck. A tightly woven fabric, such as canvas, works best to protect your skin from UV rays. Avoid straw hats with holes that let sunlight through. A darker hat may offer more UV protection.

Sunscreen Put on broad spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 15 before you go outside, even on slightly cloudy or cool days. Don’t forget to put a thick layer on all parts of exposed skin. Get help for hard-to-reach places like your back. Cosmetics Some makeup and lip balms contain some of the same chemicals used in sunscreens. If they do not have at least SPF 15, don't use them by themselves.

World Hepatitis Day is July 28th

World Hepatitis Day is recognized annually on July 28th, the birthday of Dr. Baruch Blumberg (1925-2011). Dr. Blumberg discovered the hepatitis B virus in 1967 and two years later developed the first hepatitis B vaccine and for these achievements won the Nobel Prize. Viral hepatitis is caused by infection of one of five viruses – hepatitis A, B, C, D or E. All hepatitis viruses can cause inflammation of the liver, and chronic hepatitis B and C can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Viral hepatitis is a major global health threat with around 240 million people living with chronic hepatitis B and up to 150 million people living with chronic hepatitis C.[1,2] In order to raise awareness of this hidden epidemic, the World Health Assembly and the President of the United States have designated July 28th as World Hepatitis Day. Organizations around the world, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and CDC, use World Hepatitis Day to raise awareness of the problem and what needs to be done to strengthen efforts in prevention, screening and control of viral hepatitis. Viral Hepatitis: A Global Perspective

Worldwide, viral hepatitis is among the top 10 infectious disease killers with more than one million people dying each year from chronic viral hepatitis. These deaths are primarily from cirrhosis or liver cancer caused by hepatitis B and hepatitis C. In fact, chronic hepatitis B and chronic hepatitis C cause approximately 80% of the world’s liver cancer.

Many of those who are chronically infected are unaware of their infection. People can live with chronic viral hepatitis for decades before having symptoms or feeling sick. So even though a person has no symptoms and may appear healthy, damage to their liver can still be occurring. The good news is hepatitis A and hepatitis B can be prevented with safe, effective vaccine.

PAGE 19

Over the last several decades in the U.S., there has been more than a 90% decrease in hepatitis A cases, and many experts believe this decline is due to vaccination of children and people at risk for hepatitis A. In many parts of the world, widespread infant vaccination programs have led to a decrease in new cases of hepatitis B. There is currently no vaccine to prevent hepatitis C, but research is ongoing.

Walnuts may improve your colon health PAGE 22

Eating walnuts may change gut bacteria in a that way suppresses colon cancer, researchers led by UConn Health report in the journal Cancer Prevention Research. A team of researchers from UConn Health and The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine found that mice that ate 7-10.5 percent of their total calories as walnuts developed fewer colon cancers. The effect was most pronounced in male mice, which had 2.3 times fewer tumors when fed walnuts as part of a diet similar to the typical American’s. That’s equivalent to a human eating about an ounce of walnuts a day.

Healthcare News - Fairfield County

“Our results show for the first time that walnut consumption may reduce colon tumor development,” said Principal Investigator Dr. Daniel W. Rosenberg of UConn Health. “There is accumulating evidence that eating walnuts may offer a variety of benefits related to health issues like cancer. This study shows that walnuts may also act as a probiotic to make the colon healthy, which in turn offers protection against colon tumors.” This research was supported in part by the California Walnut Commission (CWC) and the American Institute for Cancer Research.

Clean Beaches Week is the “Earth Day” for beaches

Held annually from July 1-7, it is a celebration of the healthy beach lifestyle. The four main themes of the week are: food, recreation, travel and our environment. Founded in 2003, the week has drawn enormous public support: over 150 coastal governors, mayors, and county commissions have now issued proclamations in support of the week. In 2007, by unanimous consent, both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives passed resolutions enacting the week. During Clean Beaches Week, the public will be strongly urged to do the following during their beach visit: 1. “Leave no trace” of litter, only footprints at the beach. 2. Eat healthy meal

3. Get active by playing, surfing, fishing, walking or reading.

4. Reduce their carbon footprint though energy efficiency, conservation, carpooling, walking and other green activities.

Fireworks Safety

More than 50,000 fires are caused by fireworks every year. Take the proper precautions when operating fireworks. Our 4th of July safety tips cover a few key summer safety topics to keep you and your family safe this holiday. • Never disassemble or try to make your own fireworks.

• Don’t point sparklers, or fireworks at yourself or others, especially while they’re being lit.

• Only light fireworks on the ground and in areas that are dry and fire resistant.

• Don’t attempt to light multiple devices at the same time. • Never allow young children to handle fireworks or sparklers.

• Always keep a portable fire extinguisher close by. Also keep a water hose or buckets of water nearby to put out fires. Source: protection1.com

July is National Cord Blood Awareness Month

What is cord blood? When a baby is born, the umbilical cord is cut to separate child from mother. Blood from the placenta and umbilical cord can be collected for medical use. Umbilical cord blood, which is typically thrown away, contains a small number of hematopoietic stem cells (HSC), which have the ability to mature into the different types of cells found in normal, healthy blood: red blood cells, white cells and platelets. HSC can be stored for several years for later use in patients with life-threatening blood cancers and diseases.

Why would someone need cord blood? For the thousands of people that are diagnosed yearly with lymphoma, leukemia, or other hematologic disorders, the only chance for long-term survival is often an HSC transplantation that will replace the diseased blood-forming cells with healthy ones. HSC can be harvested from umbilical cord blood, bone marrow or peripheral blood. Cord blood can be used as an additional source of HSC if a donor-match is difficult to find.

How do I donate cord blood? Prior to delivery, talk with your doctor about your decision to donate cord blood and make sure you meet the donation guidelines. When you give birth, the umbilical cord blood will be collected for a public cord blood bank – there are no collection or storage fees. The blood will be listed on the Be The Match Registry and becomes available to anyone in need of a transplant.

How do I access cord blood if I need it? If you are a patient diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma, or other life-threatening disease, your doctor will determine if a transplant using umbilical cord blood is the best choice for you.

Chiropractic Techniques

Healthcare News - Fairfield County July, 2016

Chiropractic Manipulation Techniques Chiropractors adapt treatment plans to meet the specific needs of each patient. Typically, chiropractic treatment plans involve some forceful and less forceful spinal adjustment techniques during the same visit or over the course of treatment (6 to 10 visits for a typical patient).

There are well over 100 types of adjustment techniques used by chiropractors throughout the world. Typically, chiropractors will focus on and utilize 8 to 10 different approaches in their practice. The common goal of most chiropractic techniques is to restore or to enhance joint function, with the general goals of resolving joint inflammation and reducing pain. Some approaches use some force (spinal manipulation), while others are more gentle (spinal mobilization).

Spinal Manipulation (High-Velocity LowAmplitude Thrust) The most frequently used chiropractic technique, spinal manipulation, is the traditional high-velocity low-amplitude (HVLA) thrust. The manipulation often results in an audible "pop," as chiropractors use their hands to apply a controlled sudden force to a joint while the body is positioned in a specific way. Spinal Mobilization (Low-Force or Gentle Chiropractic Techniques) Some conditions (such as osteoporosis), pathology, the patient's size, patient comfort, or patient preference, may require a gentler approach generally referred to as spinal mobilization. In addition, some patients and/or clinicians prefer mild spinal mobilization techniques that do not involve twisting of the body or a forceful thrust.

PAGE 23

In addition to manipulation, many chiropractors will employ adjunctive therapy, such as ice or heat or physical therapy modalities (such as electric stimulation, ultrasound, etc.), as part of an overall treatment plan.

The Activator Method Chiropractic Technique® is a diagnostic and treatment system used to treat many types of back pain, neck pain, and headaches (both chronic and migraine). The Activator Method uses a small, handheld instrument to deliver a gentle impulse force to the spine with the goal of restoring motion to the targeted spinal vertebra or joint. The Graston Technique is a form of manual therapy known as soft-tissue instrument-assisted mobilization. It is one of a number of manual therapy approaches that uses instruments with a specialized form of massage/scraping the skin gently. The therapy is designed to help the practitioner identify areas of restriction and attempt to break up scar tissue. Spinal Decompression Therapy involves stretching the spine, using a traction table or similar motorized device, with the goal of relieving back pain and/or leg pain. This procedure is called nonsurgicaldecompression therapy (as opposed to surgical spinal decompression, such as laminectomy and microdiscectomy).

Patients can “skip the trip” and receive convenient, safe, affordable treatment online for common health conditions

St. Vincent’s Medical Center, a member of Ascension, the largest non-profit health system in the U.S. and the world's largest Catholic health system, is making it easier for patients to receive care for common health conditions with the launch of MYvirtualcare.com - an online diagnosis and treatment service powered by Zipnosis that connects patients with St. Vincent's clinicians. With MYvirtualcare.com patients can now receive prompt care for conditions such as sinus infections, female bladder infections, pink eye, or colds, coughs, and the flu - for a set fee of $35, less than the cost of many insurance co-pays. “With MYvirtualcare.com, patients can skip the trip to the doctor’s office and still get the care they need, when and how they need it,” said Dianne Auger, Senior Vice president, Chief Strategy Officer, St. Vincent's Medical Center. “We are excited to be at the leading edge of this new technology, which is taking healthcare beyond bricks and mortar and into the virtual realm.” Patients begin a virtual visit at MYvirtualcare.com by completing an online adaptive interview that adheres to the latest evidence-based medical guidelines and is similar to what they would experience in a face-to-face visit. The patient's

medical history and symptoms are then forwarded to a St. Vincent's provider for review and diagnosis. When the diagnosis and treatment plan are complete, typically within one hour, the patient receives a text or email alert. If a prescription is appropriate, MYvirtualcare.com allows the provider to send the prescription electronically to the pharmacy of the patient's choice. If the clinician determines that the patient's symptoms require a face-toface visit, St. Vincent's staff will help the patient to book that appointment, as well. St. Vincent’s clinicians are available for virtual diagnosis seven days a week from 8:30 am to 10:00 pm. Patients may access MYvirtualcare.com 24/7 via computer, smartphone or other Web-enabled device, and off-hour visits will be reviewed and followed up on within one hour of opening the next day. “By launching MYvirtualcare.com, St. Vincent's is improving clinical care one click at a time by making it easy for patients and healthcare providers to connect online without sacrificing quality,” said Jon Pearce, co-founder and CEO of Zipnosis. “We look forward to working with St. Vincent's to meet the ever-changing needs of their patients and clinicians.”

American Heart Association’s new video targets bystander CPR among Latino Millennials National CPR & AED Awareness Week, June 1-7, aims to educate Americans about CPR and AED training in order to increase the chance of survival from cardiac arrest. Every year, more than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside the hospital; only 10 percent of people survive. CPR can double or even triple the chances of survival if provided immediately. The American Heart Association’s new video, produced by in conjunction with the Empire BlueCross BlueShield Foundation, showcases Hands-Only CPR, a two-step, easyto-learn lifesaving technique and is targeted at Latino millennials, the youngest major racial or ethnic group in the United States. The video is online at www.heart.org/HandsOnlyCPR. In the United States, Latinos and blacks are at a higher risk for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest with a poor prognosis. Latinos specifically are 30 percent less likely to have bystander CPR performed on them in a cardiac emergency, making them less likely to survive. “Nearly one-in-four U.S. Hispanics are millennials, and the American Heart Association invites this generation to learn a very simple skill that could save the life of someone they love,” said Carolyn Torella, AHA spokesperson. The new video, produced in Spanglish to address the growing share of Latino millennials who are less inclined to use Spanish and speak only English at home, features a storyline inspired by Hispanic culture. The 60-second spot introduces a Hispanic mother who always knows best and never fails to remind her children of her wisdom. After a series of cuts displaying the mom’s smarts, the children turn the tables and show her how easy it is to perform Hands-Only CPR.

“Hands-Only CPR is so simple,” said Torella, “First, if you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, call 9-1-1. Then push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of “Stayin’ Alive” – the perfect rhythm for CPR.”

“Hispanics have higher heart disease risks and yet there are barriers and lack of information that keep them from calling 9-1-1 for assistance during a cardiac emergency,” said Sally Kweskin, Public Relations Director with

Empire BlueCross BlueShield Foundation, “The video will help reduce barriers and allow viewers to understand the vital role they can serve by acting quickly and performing HandsOnly CPR. This latest public awareness effort continues the inspiring teamwork between the American Heart Association and Empire BlueCross BlueShield Foundation, which has resulted in more than three million people being trained in lifesaving Hands-Only CPR.” “During cardiac arrest, every second matters,” said Torella, “This new educational video can serve as an accessible resource that will em-

power Hispanic millennials to learn HandsOnly CPR, an important skill that can potentially make a difference for their loved ones in a cardiac arrest situation.” The American Heart Association is devoted to saving people from heart disease and stroke – America’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers. We team with millions of volunteers to fund innovative research, fight for stronger public health policies, and provide lifesaving tools and information to prevent and treat these diseases. WCHN decreases the need for knee replacement with new injectable bone filler

When his knee quickly swelled to three times its normal size after falling on the stairs, Nicholas Saccone of Carmel, NY knew something was seriously wrong. Saccone, 69, wasn’t able to walk or bend his knee and pain radiated throughout his leg. He immediately contacted Dr. Daniel Fish, a surgeon with Orthopaedic Specialists of Connecticut who had performed previous meniscus surgery on him. An MRI and X-ray revealed that Saccone had arthritis and had also developed a stress fracture of the knee, but instead of a full knee replacement, Dr. Fish suggested a relatively new procedure called Subchondroplasty. Dr. Fish and two other doctors with Western Connecticut Health Network (WCHN) are among only a handful of surgeons in Connecticut trained to use this revolutionary technique.

“This procedure is ideal for patients with knee pain and decreased joint function caused by small cracks or stress fractures,” explained Dr. Fish. “We inject a calcium phosphate compound that seals the crack, similar to caulking.” Specifically, surgeons use an injectable, bone graft substitute material called AccuFill® that is intended to fill voids or gaps in the skeletal system. It flows readily to fill bone defects, then crystallizes and sets to form a scaffold in the bone. The compound promotes new bone growth and is naturally replaced with the new bone during the healing process. The FDA approved the material in 2010. Dr. Fish and his partner Dr. Robert Daher, and colleague Dr. Matthew Rogell, have offered the procedure for the past two years.

“Before Subchondroplasty, there were limited treatment options for this type of injury,” said Dr. Rogell. “Often the only treatment option for patients in significant pain was a more invasive knee replacement.” For Saccone, his operation was performed at 7:00 a.m. and by noon According to the Centers he was back in his home and able to for Disease Control and move around.“On just the fourth day Prevention (CDC), after my surgery, I was walking 719,000 Americans had a without a cane. The knee can be quite uncomfortable for 2448 hours after the procedure, but then the pain resolves rapidly. Patients are on crutches for three to five days postoperatively. Most see a complete recovery in four to six weeks. “Studies have indicated that the benefits can last for more than five years,” Dr. Fish said. “Additionally, this procedure will not limit treatment options for a partial or full joint replacement further down the road if needed.” Dr. Fish is an examiner for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery as well as an editorial reviewer for The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery and the American Journal of Sports Medicine. He notes “Reviewing the latest research for publication in national orthopaedic journals allows me to stay current while evaluating the risks and benefits of new technologies.” Dr. Fish has not yet performed the Subchondroplasty procedure on other weight-bearing joints such as the hip or ankle, but he said the potential exists. Dr. Fish and Dr. Daher are partners at Orthopaedic Specialists of Connecticut, based in Brookfield, CT. They both reside in Ridgefield, CT. Learn more by visiting www.ctorthopaedic.com. “Back Pain Technology Cheats Mother Nature

July, 2016

Healthcare News - Fairfield County

After helping hundreds of Fairfield County herniated disc sufferers eliminate their pain, Local Doctor explains how…

Helps Herniated Discs Heal Naturally… In As Little As 25 Minutes!” At Last! Fairfield County Doctor Offers Technology That Doesn’t Just End SEVERE Pain From Herniated Discs, But Helps Your Body To Start Rebuilding Them… As Fast As Humanly Possible! Best Part: You can check it all out for FREE if you like!

There is no doubt… technology has made all of our lives better… and easier. Just about every miraculous medical cure and comfort of modern living can be attributed to amazing breakthroughs in technology. Heck, laser eye surgery can give people who are almost as blind as a bat perfect 20/20 vision. How amazing is that? That’s why it’s no surprise that technology might be able to solve your back and neck pain from herniated/bulging discs or sciatica… for good. Here is why: Back and neck pain can be devastating. And nothing is worse than going to doctor after doctor… trying treatment after treatment… spending money you can’t afford… and still suffering in pain. That’s why… I bet you would love to instantly end your pain… without any risk what-so-ever… and have it never come back for the rest of your life? Well, that might NOT be so easy. But, what if there was a wonderful advancement in technology that, with a handful of simple, non-invasive treatments, could possibly have you out of pain and on your way to healing naturally? Better yet, what if this technology could possibly heal your herniated/bulging discs (instead of cutting it out like surgery) so you have the best chance to live pain-free and do all the things you want and love to do? And what if this technology was: • FDA cleared! • Proven safe and effective! • Allows your herniated discs to heal naturally without the risky and dangerous side effects of surgery! • Relieves pain fast… in some cases in as little as 25 minutes! Well, guess what? There is such technology and there is a very good chance it can help you… like it has already helps thousands of herniated/bulging disc and sciatica sufferers all around the country… No Matter How Bad Your Pain Is, How Long You’ve Been Suffering Or How Many Other Treatments And Doctors Have Failed You! Don’t laugh. It’s really true. Here’s proof…

When you have a herniated disc, compressive forces cause your spinal bones to come together… basically squashing your disc. The space in between your bones decreases and the soft, jello-like disc material leaks out. This disc material that leaks out is called a herniated disc and can cause severe pain, numbness and tingling in your neck, back, arms or legs when the herniation pushes into and “pinches” a nerve. So it makes sense, if you could slightly pull the spinal bones apart… that would open up the space, take the pressure off the disc, the disc off the nerve and solve the problem. Right? But the only problem is… how do you do that? For years and years, doctors have been trying to do it with traction. But traction has been proven ineffective and often very painful. Why? Traction doesn’t work because when you have a herniated or bulging disc, the area is injured and when you try to move, your muscles go into spasm. Spasm is your body’s way of trying to protect you from causing further injury. That’s why traction hurts so much. As soon as the traction starts… your muscles overprotect the area and spasm. But the good news is: Now there is technology that out-smarts your body’s natural spasm reaction. In other words: It fools mother nature! This technology is called nonsurgical spinal decompression (NSSD) and here’s how it works… NSSD is very different from plain traction because it has advanced computer technology that actually senses your spinal muscles. When it starts to gently pull, it immediately knows when your muscles start to contract and it stops pulling. As soon as your muscles relax, it starts pulling again. The amazing thing is: the computer senses your muscles contraction so early… you don’t even feel what is going on. Which means you never feel any pain! In fact, the only thing most patients feel is… RELIEF!!! But the best part is: NSSD is able to gently separate your spinal bones which, in many cases, actually sucks the herniated disc material back into the disc where it belongs! This takes away your pain and allows your herniated and bulging discs to heal naturally!

And check this out: Treatments are pleasant and simple. All you have to do is lie on your back, listen to your favorite music, read a magazine… or… take a nap! The wonderful technology does everything while you simply RELAX the pain away! To sum up NSSD: • For most patients it is 100% painless… in fact many patients actually fall asleep during treatment! • Works fast! Most patients get relief after a handful of treatments – some after the very first! • Is non-invasive so it does not have the dangerous risks of surgery! • Gets to the root cause of the problem and helps it heal naturally! Isn’t modern technology wonderful? And wouldn’t you like to… Give This Great Technology A Try… For Free? If you would, there’s great news. There is a Doctor located at 222 Westchester Ave. Suite 405 in White Plains who has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in this wonderful technology and has been treating herniated/bulging disc and sciatica patients with incredible success. His name is Dr. Jonathan Donath DC, MS and he is so excited about the results he’s been getting, he would like to share it with as many pain sufferers as possible. But There Is A Catch… There’s always a catch... isn’t there? Even though this technology has helped a majority of the patients Dr. Donath has treated… it is not a wonder cure and it does not help everyone.

On the right: healthy disc. Center: Herniated disc with soft disc material leaking out. On the left: Herniated disc material compressing or “pinching” nerve.

For that reason, Dr. Donath does a complete examination on every potential patient and only accepts you if he feels you are most likely to get the pain relief and outcome you are looking for. Dr. Donath’s Special Deal For You! Because the economy is so bad and Dr. Donath wants to help you if possible, he is offering the first 17 people who respond to this article a free consultation and NSSD qualification examination. And if you qualify for NSSD treatments, Dr. Donath will also give you one treatment for FREE! And if you do not qualify, Dr. Donath will help you find the best option for you. That’s why, if you suffer with pain from a herniated/bulging disc or sciatica you should call 914-259-8104 right now. When April answers the phone, simply tell her you would like your free non-surgical spinal decompression consultation and examination. If you are one of the first 17, she will schedule you within the next few days. If you are in a lot of pain or already scheduled for surgery, tell April and she will be sure to get you in immediately. Maybe even today.

On right: Herniated disc with spinal bones “squished” together. Center: NSSD slightly pulls the spinal bones apart, opens up the disc space and allows herniated material to move back into the disc. Left: Herniated material completely back in center of disc allows the disc to heal naturally. Your consultation and examination should take about 60 minutes. During this time you can get all of your questiones answered in a warm and friendly environment. You will know exactly what’s causing your pain and the best possible way to solve it. Dr. Donath will explain to you all your possible options along with his recomendations so you can make the best choice for YOU.

Why Limited To 17? Dr. Donath has limited the number he will accept right now to 17 because he does not believe patients should wait and they should also get the quality personal attention they deserve. When you go for your free visit, I’m sure you will see how unique and pleasant the experience is. It’s nice to be treated like a person and not a number or based on insurance coverage. It’s also nice to know exactly what’s causing your pain and how to relieve it as fast as possible. Dr. Donath’s favorite cases are the one’s that were able to cancel back surgery after only a handful of treatments. Dr. Donath also loves when a herniated disc patient that is in excruciating pain and thinks they’ve tried everything, lays down on the NSSD table, takes a 25 minute nap… and… wakes up with all their pain GONE! Just imagine how it would feel to have all your pain finally gone. Imagine going to bed and being able to sleep the entire night through… … and waking up refreshed and energized… ready to take on the brand new day – without the pain and stiffness that has been terrorizing you. And imagine finally knowing you have the solution to your herniated disc pain. Well, you may not have to just “imagine” anymore… because… NSSD might start relieving your pain… in just 25 minutes! So, if you’d like to see if you qualify and give this amazing technology a try for free… give April a call at 914259-8104 right now. Why wait one more day in pain when the solution may be one quick phone call away? Call now before someone else gets your free spot. One More Thing It’s Important… Ever since getting this wonderful technology, Dr. Donath’s office has been flooded with calls. For that reason, if when you call, the lines are busy or you go to voice mail… just keep calling back. The possibility of living pain-free is well worth the time and effort it may take you to get through and schedule your appointment. 914-259-8104
