But which. Searching for a sign - a map - a word that tells what lies behind just one of the doors. Passages. Leading everywhere or nowhere. Think about the passages you've been through. Childhood - toys and dreams. Teenage years - proms and pimples and football games . . . College. More knowledge than you even imagined. Surprised because you thought you knew it all. Finally, courage bubbles up within you. You grasp the cool door knob. Turning. the door begins to open. What lies down the next passage?

HOMECOMING 1985

Belmont College Homecoming 85 culminated in the crowning of Senior Ellen Reynolds as its Queen. Related Homecoming activities included a bonfire hosted by the Belmont cheerleaders and a crafts bazaar sponsored by the Belmont Alumni Association. The theme "A Southern Tradition," was used extensively throughout the weekend's festivities. Rebels and Rebelettes assisted by carrying on their winning traditions in the Homecoming ballgames.

Lynn Eastes

To teach a few classes and go home, leaving the students and school behind, is easy. But some instructors go beyond their teaching and grading. They give their spare time (what little they have) to the students and the school. LYNN EASTES is one of those instructors. She is an alumna who returned to give back part of what she received. Dr. Chaney remembers Lynn's acting out the part of the windmill in a class presentation of Don Quixote. The memories about Lynn Eastes below are by a colleague and a student. Because of her hard work not only at the chalkboard but also in the Little Theater, the 1985-86 TOWER staff proudly dedicates this yearbook to Lynn Eastes for her dedication and for sharing her talents.

Near the end of Chekhov's The Sea Gull, the character Nina is discussing her life in the theatre and says, "In our work ... what matters is not fame, not glory, not what I dreamed of, but knowing how to be patient. To bear one's cross and have faith. I have faith and it all doesn't hurt so much, and when I think of my vocation I am not afraid of life." This speech expresses Lynn Eastes. Lynn is a combination of hard work and patience, tempered with intelligence and common sense. I have known her for sixteen years and have worked with her for five. In that time I have seen her constantly work to make better what she already does well. And that work has not been for fanfare, but for development as a teaching professional and for a personal sense of accomplishment. Though her time has been devoted to this development, she has gone the second mile in being available to students, faculty, and friends for support, comfort, and constructive criticism as needed. And though like all humans she has her points of frustration, she perseveres because of faith in God, faith in herself, faith in the people who surround her, and faith in the work she does. Dedicated And Dramatic Hypocrisy does not run deeply in my veins. I cannot sing the praises of someone whom I despise as often as love. But one cannot fully appreciate love without knowledge of hate. Had I never felt the aggravation of being told that I wasn't good enough, had I never known the pain of the fist of a diminutive woman being shoved into my back to push me a few steps further when I'd already gone as far as I thought talent or work could take me, I might never have known the thrill of walking off stage knowing that I had truly been the best that I could be. Those of us who work regularly in the Little Theatre vow with almost every show that we'll never come back to put up with the frustration, tension, and heartache that inevitably exists when strong-willed personalities are brought together. Yet, each of us is right there the next time, swearing again that we've had enough, just as we will keep doing time and time again. There is a peculiar spirit in the Little Theatre that compels us to return. Lynn Eastes is no small part of that spirit. Her shows have ranged from the unfalteringly brilliant to the unfortuantely awful, yet she gives each the same love, dedication, and hours of too much work and too little sleep. That the woman can work in what is, after all, a basement is impressive. That she can stage performances of quite superior quality in a sub-standard arena with an infinitesimal budget under a cloud of student and administrative apathy is astonishing. I was asked, as a former student, to share my memories of Lynn. I can't; they are too numerous, often too personal. However, I will show an uncharacteristic sentimentality in saying: My memories of Belmont will be among the greatest treasurers of my life, and those memories usually center around the Little Theatre. I am grateful for having had the opportunity to work with Lynn Eastes. I am proud to have her as part of those memories. - Beau Smith April 20, 1986
