Physical Culture Development ofthe mind and body created a 'versatile, well-adjusted young lady." ''Physical culture' on the roof garden was a part of the required curriculum. Also offered was a course in "The Theory and Technique of Riding.' The school owned-and-operated stabte presented horse shows twice a year. Riding for pleasure as well as for competition was encouraged. Other outdoor sports included softball. tennis, golf, archery, and field hockey. Tournaments in each sport were held annually. The gymnasium located in Blanton Hall provided ample space for all indoor activities. Swimming, basketball. ping-pong, and bowling supplied many.hours of wholesome recreation. The Ward-Belmont girls were ''intellectual, cultured. and poised, but Jim-loving.', Some of the girls found their fun by jumping from the balconies of the club houses onto mattresses placed below. Education at Ward-Belmont helped shape, the student's future with her individual tastes and aims.

The stage is setprops are in place; -make-up is finished; costumes are on.

As the producers watch their venture from out front, the actors anxiously wait in the wings for the cue to take their places.

Last season's run was a box office smash, and it will certainly be a hard act to follow ... but this season's product4Gn is here with all the potential of a hit ....

Faithfulness to duty, friendliness to all, and fear of God, mark a man of honor. Such a man was Dr. W. W. Phelps, Dean of Students, Belmont college 1960-69. The 1970 Tower is presented to the student body in loving memory of Dr. W. W. Phelps

One season during my teen years I remember a very popular record entitled "If I Had a Talking Picture of You." At that time all we could afford to have in our home was a very inexpensive record player. Somehow, I do not recall just how, we got enough money to buy this record and we played it quite frequently. It has come to my mind recently that the College annual, and more especially THE TOWER, comes as nearly being a talking picture of friends and activities over the years as anything could be. If you students receive as much joy out of referring to your annuals as I do, then they bring you a great deal of pleasure. Every time I open one of these books and my eyes fall upon the pictures, I seem to hear voices and sense the warmth of personalities and sort of relive the happy moments spent together here at Belmont College. For all of the planning, arduous toil, and the many attempts to get each one to pose prettily, I want to thank the staff. May your hearts and lives be warmed time and time again as you relive what I believe you will remember as the happiest years of your life. In your quest for success and achievement, stay in close touch with the One who "came that you might have life and have it more abundantly."

From your opening line To the last curtain call. It takes a long time to become a star.

CAMPUS LIFE Even before school started, student leaders anxiously prepared for a new year as we "Entered the 70's With Infectious Involvement." Freshmen burst on the scene and became involvedwithCaptain Hook, the rebel flag, the upperclassmen,: and the everpresent beanies. After an unsuccessful attempt by Seniors to stock· the fountain with goldfish, the lucky Frosh got to help in the clean-up. New faces showed up at the Senior Halloween party. Old faces came back for Homecoming, and witnessed the end of the rivalry between the A-A-A and the R-R-R. "Christmas on the Moon" meant a special visit from Big Ben and Santa Joe. Other visits paid off as Belmont "Gained" a berth in the VSAC Tournament and had their winningest season in four years. Two prized victories at Lipscomb and honors such as "The Kid's" being named Most Valuable in the Western Division of the VSAC iced the cake for the Rebels. The Rebelettes brought home the victories, as they zoomed to a 12-2 season. The merry month of May opened with the annual fastivities complete with the Maypole, the queen, and her court. Bonfires, movies, snow, overtimes, parking tickets, corsages, and all the other trinkets of memory each played a part in the excitement, frustration, and anticipation of the good and the bad times that made another stage of Belmont.

Through the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the Student Government Association, the students of Belmont College uphold the democratic ideal of selfgovernment. Seeking not merely to provide representation in the present, the functions of the Association also prepare the student for future responsibilities. The executive council, which is directly elected by the student body each spring, is responsible for the overall coordination of the SGA. The legislative council, composed of organizational representatives, is primarily a law-making body. Representing the four academic classes, the judicial council interprets and reviews laws enacted by the government. It is the desire of the Student Government Association that each student at Belmont have "the opportunity of mental, social, and spiritual education."

BAPTIST STUDENT UNION

The Baptist Student Union seeks to relate the student to Christ, the church, and the denomination. It is an outreach of the church into the academic atmosphere and purposes the projection of the individual, through this influence, in a positive Christian witness to the world. Through the religious and social activities which the BSU sponsors, this Christian growth is accomplished. Vespers and regular student devotional meetings enrich the spiritual aspect of education. Missions Emphasis Week and Christian Emphasis Week bring challenging speakers to the college campus. The BSU also promotes involvement in the Student Summer Missions Program.

The Mission Fellowship, composed of those students who have active interests in home and foreign missions, seeks to discover the best means by which the task of missions today may be fulfilled. Through the direction of the Great Commission, the members attempt intellectually and spiritually to uphold the purpose of missions.

The Belmont Vision serves the student body as a source of information and of entertaining news. Due to the new location of the Tennessee Baptist Convention, The Vision acquired the use of their off-set printing press, thus enabling the paper to be issued weekly. The paper reports the sports events-both intramural and intercollegiate, social activities, religious activities, and other campus functions. It also gives students the practical experience of collecting, writing, and putting the campus news in print.

ALPHA MANAGEMENT ASSOC/A TION The Alpha Management Association is a management club providing modern management knowledge to interested students. It strives to enlighten its members in all phases of business management. BELL TONES Belltones is a select organization for the women devoted to performance of classical and contemporary literature composed or arranged specifically for women's voices. Membership is determined by general musicianship, previous experience, voice quality, and over-all personality. Members are expected to maintain high academic achievement in all studies. In addition to the formal requirements, an informal initiation has become traditional. Activities include an annual tour, two formal concerts, and several appearances for various civic and church groups in Nashville.

GLEE CLUB Under the direction of Mr. Robert Mulloy, the Belmont Men's Glee Club is another one of the talented musical units on the campus.
