HOW THEY WERE CHOSEN The 1963 "Miss Tower" contest was the first of its kind at Belmont. Its purpose was to emphasize the beauty, charm, and talent of the Belmont coed, and to stress the endurance and the importance of Belmont's heritage of the Old South. The Judicial Council, led by Bud Casebier as Chief Justice, and the Legislative Council, along with the Executive Council, make up the Student Government Association. It is their responsibility to act as mediator between the students and the Administration. Campus problems arc the concern of these councils. These cornmittee members are elected by the campus organizations to represent them in any matter which may come before the SGA.

The Baptist Student Union is student-led, churchrelated, and Christ-centered. I ts purpose is to help each student find his place of service in a church in the college community. In so doing, the BS U provides services of both a devotional and a social nature for the student body. The BSU seeks to help each student discover and maintain the

relationship to God through Jesus

Christ, to the church, the academic community, and to the world. Belmont's BS U seeks to cooperate with other BSU's across the state in promoting such activities as the Summer Missions Program, state conventions, and student spring retreats.

I would like to express sincere gratitude to all those, both on and off the staff, who have been loyal to our objectives and have given of their time and ideas, to give to the students a treasure of memories. VISION The Belmont Vision, is the college newspaper which is published monthly during the school year. It is a source of news and information for the school and it gives students practical experience in collecting, writing, and putting the campus news into print. Positions on the staff are open to all students. The editor, who is selected by the faculty publications committee, receives the one hundred dollar Jerry E. Lambdin Memorial Scholarship. ORATORIO CHOIR The Oratorio Choir is made up of any students who arc interested in singing and are willing to give the necessary hours to practice. This organization gives three major concerts each year. The "Messiah'' was presented for the Christmas season; "T'hc Creation" concluded the year. The soloists for each presentation arc members of the choir and arc selected by audition. Any member of the group may audition for the solo parts. Mr. Dee Wayne White, director of the Oratorio Choir, is a graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University with the B.M. Degree and George Peabody College with the M.M. Degree. His duties at Belmont College include the administration of the department, applied music instruction, and direction of all choral activities. Mrs. Helen Trotter Midkiff holds both the B.M. and M.M. degrees, with major in organ, from Peabody College. She is the organist for the Oratorio Choir. Her duties at Belmont College include instruction in organ, piano, and theory. 103

Led by All-Conference forward Marlin Alsup, who topped the VSAC Western Division with a 21.9 point per game average, the Rebels started a Freshman, three Sophomores, and a Junior to give many teams a scare before going down, and losing many games by no more than one, two, or three points. Center Jimmy Simmons began coming into his own toward the end of the year; and besides being the team's leading rebounder, he scored 19 or 20 points in many games . JERRY SULLIVAN

BASKETBALL The team finished the year strong, winning three out of their last four games. The two biggest games of the year were: Beating Union at Homecoming 84-80 and winnnig over Lambuth 110-83. Losing to Lipscomb by only six points, 70-76, was a heartbreaker for the Rebs, but they led most of the game and played their hearts out for Belmont. Wins over Bethel and Union again brought the Rebels a 3-7 conference record and a 4-15 overall record for the season.

WOMEN'S INTRAMURALS The Women's Intramural Board provides an intramural program for all Belmont women. The two purposes of this Board arc: 1. To create better sportsmanship among the participants. 2. To promote participation in sports. The Women's Intramural program is set up on a point system. Each team or individual participating receives points, and the winning team receives additional· points. In the spring the girl and club with the highest number of points win the trophies for the year. Sports included in the intramural program are tennis, table tennis, swimming, volleyball, horseshoes, field hockey, bowling, basketball, archery, badminton, and softball.
