A Note from the CEO

We have kicked off 2026 with an incredible start, hosting back-to-back national sailing championships with the Flying 11s, 13ft Skiffs and 16ft Skiffs over two action-packed weeks. It was truly special to see such outstanding talent on the water and to welcome sailors, families and supporters from across the country to Belmont 16s Sailing Club.

These events don’t happen without the dedication of many people. I sincerely thank our sponsors, staff and volunteers, whose hard work delivered one of the largest national regattas the Australian Skiff Sailing Association has seen in over 25 years. Their commitment ensured the championships ran smoothly and showcased our Club and Lake Macquarie at their best. You can read more about the racing highlights on pages 12-17.

As we move into the new year, it’s also time to renew or collect your membership card. When you do, we’re proud to recognise our long-standing members through our “Lucky 16s” promotion, where eligible members will share in $8,000 worth of Ascent Rewards points. Are you feeling lucky? Full details can be found on pages 4-5.

We’re also excited to announce the move to digital membership. Members can now renew or join in under 60 seconds, with their membership card added directly to their Apple or Google Wallet. Your digital card can be used for venue entry, earning and redeeming Ascent Rewards points, and accessing member discounts at the kiosk. For those who still prefer a physical card, we will have two printing terminals available, one near SALT and one next to the Cashier in the Gaming Lounge. And if you go digital before 1 April, you could even win an iPad. More details are included throughout this magazine.

Looking ahead, there’s plenty to enjoy at your Club. We have great entertainment at reasonable prices planned throughout the first half of the year, and our recent menu changes in SALT and Martha are already proving popular. You can read more about what’s new in dining and entertainment in the following pages.

Thank you for your continued membership and support. We look forward to sharing a happy, healthy and connected 2026 together at your Club.

2026 Skelcon Australian 16ft & 13ft Skiff Championships

A Record Breaker on Belmont Bay

This January, Belmont 16s Sailing Club proudly hosted one of the largest and most highly anticipated sailing events on Lake Macquarie in years, the Skelcon Australian 16ft and 13ft Skiff Championships. The regatta brought together top crews from across the nation, delivering thrilling racing and unforgettable moments on home waters.

Held from 4 to 11 January, the regatta delivered everything skiff sailing is known for. Large fleets, fast racing, dramatic moments and strong national attention firmly placed Belmont 16s Sailing Club on the Australian sailing stage.

Even before the first start, the event had already made history. It was one of the largest championship fleets seen in the past 25 years, with 74 boats competing in the 16ft Skiff class and 33 boats in the 13ft Skiff class. The regatta also recorded the highest level of female participation the event has seen to date.

“It's great to see such strong female representation this year, with 18 entries in the 16s, featuring at least one all-female crew. Many of these crews are skippered by women, showing their growing leadership in the class”

Ben Bruniges, President Australian Skiff Association

Crews travelled from across Australia, creating a vibrant atmosphere both on and off the water. The depth of talent on display highlighted the strength of skiff sailing nationally and reinforced Belmont Bay’s reputation as a premier racing venue.

The championship week began with drama during the Skelcon Invitation Race. Fresh conditions greeted the fleet, but a fast-moving storm cell crossed Belmont Bay mid-race, forcing officials to shorten the course for safety. Most boats returned safely to shore, however several crews suffered equipment damage in the sudden conditions, including broken masts. It was a sharp reminder of the intensity of skiff racing and the respect required when racing on the Lake Macquarie.

As the regatta settled into rhythm, Tuesday and Wednesday delivered solid racing across a wide range of conditions. Crews were tested by shifts in breeze strength and direction, rewarding consistency, preparation and smart decision-making. By mid-week, it was clear the championship was tightening, with a small group of front-runners beginning to separate themselves from the fleet.

Among them were Belmont crew Shade to Order and Bosker Build, both showing strong pace and consistency as the series built toward its decisive final days.

Friday delivered classic Belmont Bay conditions, with a clean nor’easter, flatter water and fast, exciting racing. These were ideal for the location, allowing crews to fully showcase skiff speed and boat handling. The racing was tight and tactical, and by the end of the day the championship picture had sharpened further.

By the final weekend, the regatta had become a clear two-boat contest. Across Saturday and Sunday, it was evident the national title would be decided between Shade to Order and Bosker Build, with both crews pushing each other race after race in high-pressure conditions.

Going into the final race, Shade to Order, sailed by Tom Burton, Scott Beeby and Joel Skelton, still had a genuine chance to win. Unfortunately, heartbreak struck in the final heat when a breakage onboard forced the crew to retire. Despite this setback, the Belmont 16s crew finished second overall, an outstanding result at national level.

Congrats Sarah Lee, Keagan York & Kurt Warner!

It has been eight years since a Belmont crew last featured so strongly at a championship of this calibre on home waters, making the performance a standout moment the Club can be proud of. Against a strong national fleet, the result reflected preparation and determination.

The national title was claimed by Bosker Build, skippered by Sarah Lee of St George Skiff Club, whose consistent performance in varying conditions proved key. A thrilling final weekend secured the championship, capping off a memorable regatta for everyone involved.

The 13ft Skiff Championship provided plenty of excitement and showcased the future of the class. Harken from Manly Skiff Club claimed the national title after a strong and consistent regatta, while the depth of the fleet highlighted the growing strength of junior and youth skiff sailing. The class also featured a notably high level of female participation, reflecting the positive direction of the sport.

Congrats Skipper
Heidi Bates & Christian Spencer (Belmont Sailor)!

Across nine days, Belmont 16s Sailing Club delivered world-class racing, one of the largest fleets seen in decades, a dramatic finish, strong local representation and outstanding national and regional media coverage. Most importantly, the regatta once again confirmed Belmont 16s Sailing Club as a premier sailing destination capable of hosting events that matter to sailors, supporters and the wider community.

A sincere thank you goes to our volunteers, race officials, staff, sponsors and members who helped make the championships such a success. Your efforts ensured Belmont 16s did not just host a regatta, but delivered an event that was talked about all week, right around the country.

Brian Ellis Boat Shed Doubles Down on Solar

In August 2025, the Club reinforced its commitment to sustainability with the installation of a solar battery system and an expanded solar panel array on the Brian Ellis Boat Shed.

Delivered by local supplier and installer Reclaim Solar Energy, the upgrade included 36 additional solar panels and a 25kW solar battery, significantly strengthening the Boat Shed’s renewable energy capability. The installation feeds directly into the Brian Ellis Boat Shed operations, supporting day-to-day energy use while reducing reliance on grid power.

Originally installed with 20 solar panels, the Brian Ellis Boat Shed now features 56 solar panels, delivering a combined 15.84kW solar system. This upgrade represents a strategic investment in clean energy infrastructure designed to deliver long-term environmental and operational benefits.

This project forms part of a broader sustainability strategy across the Club. When combined with the 220-panel solar array on the main clubhouse roof, Belmont 16s now operates 276 solar panels across the site, significantly reducing carbon emissions while helping manage long-term energy costs.

The solar expansion at the Brian Ellis Boat Shed delivers clear environmental benefits, avoiding around 20 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year and equating to approximately 3,872 trees planted over 10 years, reinforcing the Club’s commitment to responsible and sustainable operations.
