So no matter what, citrus will always be a major part of our (agri)cultural DNA. Cultivating everything from sugar-kissed honeybells and tart tangerines to ruby red grapefruits and classic Florida navels, our local growers are still responsible for a big share of Floridaâs harvest. Peak season typically stretches from November to Februaryâjust in time to brighten up the winter months.
Off the beaten path? Yes, but isnât anything worth taking the time to ïŹnd? Just follow the orange blossom perfume to Floridaâs Sun Ridge, where the Ritch family has been cultivating citrus since 1992. Complete with an on-site packing house, Ridge Island Groves offers visitors a unique look at a (pesticide-free) working grove and hydroponic garden. Hop on a golf cart for a guided tour of the tangerine, grapefruit and orange groves, take a behind-the-scenes look at the packing process and pick your own fruit along the way. Donât leave without a solid pass through the Grovesâ farm stand-style gift shop, where youâll ïŹnd crates piled high with Ridge Island produce, fresh-squeezed juice and freerange eggs. Theyâre even churning out their own ice cream, including an orange soft serve thatâs so good, CreamsicleÂź cream pops will never be the same again.
Check back with Ridge Island throughout the season for other u-pick opportunities. This produce powerhouse is also a sweet spot for u-pick blueberries and peaches. Closed in summer.

Learn how Floridaâs Natural oranges journey from crate to carton and sample the different varieties of juice straight from the source. Part gift shop, part visitor center, the Grove House is open seasonally from October through May. (Fun fact: This supermarket staple started as a cooperative of local citrus growers in 1933.)
Snagging a slice of Mary Langâs world-famous grapefruit pie is reason enough to stop by this quaint cafe. Langâs also produces 150 gallons of fresh juice every day and offers fruit shipping within the United States. (Trust us: Nothing says âI love youâ like a box of honeybells.) Open October â May.

TO PICK AN ORANGE
This is the place for kitschy souvenirs, homemade key lime ice cream and Webbâs Florida-famous goat milk fudge. One glimpse of the industrious confectioners hand-dipping gourmet chocolates and it clicks: thereâs a reason they still do things the old-fashioned way. (Fun fact â the original turn-of-the-century chocolate barrel is still used today.)
Davidson of Dundee is a deïŹnite stop for anyone who secretly yearns for the days of coconut patties and Charleston ChewsÂź. This family-owned factory has been making delicious candies and jellies out of citrus juice since the 1960s. Ask for the tour (with free samples) to see how these sweets come to life. Open year-round, but hours vary by season.
Send a little sunshine home. Ship your favorite fruit anywhere in the continental U.S. (except California) to loved ones â or yourself. Order in person at Ridge Island Groves or Lang Sun Country Groves.

But blueberries are having their moment in the Sunshine State, too. Florida is now one of the top-10 blueberry producing states in the nation, and Polk County is deïŹnitely doing its part. So grab your basket (and that blue-ribbon pie recipe handed down from your great-Aunt Ethel) and ïŹnd your way to the ïŹelds.
Weâll admitâblueberry season comes and goes faster than you can say âbaked blueberry buckle.â But hey, nobody wants year-round frankenfruits either, right? We promise these juicy little gems are worth the wait. The season can fall anywhere between late March and early June.

What was once a u-pick muscadine vineyard is now a family-owned blueberry operation that offers up a unique opportunity to reïŹect and reconnect with the land that feeds us. The 10-acre farm features ïŹve different blueberry varieties along with a host of other herbs and vegetables for guests to enjoy. Pack a picnic to enjoy by the pond when your berry buckets are full. Feeling inspired? Buy an Emerald or Jewel blueberry plant to take home and harvest yourself.
Polk Countyâs citrus darling also boasts acres of blueberries. We might have to award them bonus points for having ice cream on-site. You can read more about Ridge Island at the beginning of this guide.
Winter Haven
On top of taste, the best thing about organic berries is that you can enjoy them straight off the bush. Check their Facebook page for u-pick updates throughout the season.
With views overlooking Lake Hancock, this might be one of the prettiest places to ïŹll your basket. Blackberries, peaches, strawberries (and more) are also available seasonally.
Take your pick from 35 acres of plump blueberries on this peaceful property in Auburndale. Frozen blueberries and local honey are also available.
Winter Haven
One of the few u-picks open during the week as well. No time to visit the ïŹelds? Call ahead and pick up your berries when youâre ready.
A Bartow staple for more than 100 years, James Blueberry Farm has a deep-rooted reputation for quality. Once known for their peppers, turnips and cattle, the farm is now beloved for blueberries.
Haines City
A hidden treasure located just one mile east of Highway 27. The farm is open daily but closes to the public when it rains.

If you missed out on blueberry u-pick season (or prefer your blueberry experience to pack more of a punch), weâve got you covered. Head to True Blue Winery â a combination winery and bistro situated alongside a working blueberry farm. Sample wine ïŹights and become the person who can conïŹdently say that a wood-ïŹred pizza dotted with meatballs and banana peppers pairs perfectly with a semi-dry blueberry varietal.
Thanks in large part to agricultural gurus from the University of Florida, peaches are now a Florida thing, too. Over the years, theyâve successfully developed several new varieties that require fewer chill-hours to ripen on the tree. Unlike their northern relatives, Florida peaches are a bit ïŹrmer but just as sweet, making them ideally suited for cobblers, crumbles and other baked treats. Another bonus? Florida peaches are ready to enjoy two months earlier than their Georgia cousins. Peach season usually stretches from late March to early June.

Food trucks and live music are frequent guest stars to the areaâs rising craft beer scene, ensuring bites and bands are never in short supply. So pull up a stool, sit back and enjoy.
Built in 1973, The Florida Brewery is the second oldest brewery still in operation in Florida. They specialize in lager beers with a smooth, crisp taste. Only open on Saturdays.
The latest addition to Lakelandâs craft beer scene, Swan Brewing offers lakefront views and microbrews just a few blocks from downtown. Kick back in the taproom or relax on the patio as you sip on a selection of more than 20 core, seasonal and small-batch beers.

Brimming with authenticity and local love, this brewery celebrates place just as much as a good pilsner. With names like âRind & Shineâ and â6am Pickersâ scrawled onto the chalkboard tap list, thereâs no question Grove Roots is serious about bringing Polk Countyâs citrus heritage to life. With an outdoor biergarten, bocce court and growing stash of classic board games, this kid- and dog-friendly establishment has quickly become a local favorite. Sink into an Adirondack chair for the most laid-back history lesson youâll ever have.
