There’s a framed picture that I have right behind my desk that I cherish. It was given to me several years ago by a parent. It captures an extraordinary moment at Belen. A moment that makes me proud. The picture was taken during a middle school football game against American Heritage. In the center is a Belen player on one knee stretching out his open hand to his opponent who is lying flat on his back on the field of play with a football in his arms. The young Wolverine is ready to help him up. A little plaque adorns the frame with the words, “Men for Others: On and Off the Field.”

The image captures the wonderful world of sports. The physical exertion of athletics is good, the competition is good, the discipline, comradery, focus, and exercise, all good. But what elevates athletics to such great heights and promises such great potential is the opportunity it gives our boys to be men. Men of character, men of honor, men of integrity… Christian men.

Unlike many other venues, sports provide an experience that challenges our students to put into practice the lessons they learn in the classroom, hear at morning assemblies, and celebrate at mass. It is not simply about working hard to win a district title or state championship, it’s about winning at life as men who love and serve God because they love and serve their fellow man. There is no shedding of our Christian convictions when we step on the field or jump in the pool. There is no suspension of the gospel values when we swing our racket or pull our oar. We are “men for others: on and off the field.”

On these days of banquets, when all the great sports teams at Belen Jesuit gather together to raise their triumphant laurels and sing the praises of their MVPs and Most Improved Players, let us never forget that the true athletic heroes are those who show the kind of character both on and off the field that warrant the great title of Wolverine.

On behalf of the entire school community I would like to congratulate all the coaches, trainers, athletes, and their parents for their dedication to the Belen athletic program. Thank you to Coach Carlos Barquín, who for so many years has worked hard to build such a fine program. Very few programs in the nation can boast of eleven straight years with at least one state title. Special congratulations to Coach Richard Stuart, who after 34 years as head coach of the football program has stepped aside to tackle his new role as Associate Athletic Director for the Middle School. Let us also recognize Coach Fidel Albelo, who in August will be inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

We have much to be grateful for this year.

Dear Student-Athletes,

Belen Jesuit’s mission is to guide and support our students in their process of becoming men who are open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving, and committed to doing justice. I believe that this mission is truly exemplified in our student-athletes.

As a student-athlete, you push your bodies to the limit and develop a strong work ethic You listen to your coaches and are willing to embrace new techniques and plays. As a student-athlete - at Belen Jesuit - you are held to an even higher standard. You are expected to do well in an academically rigorous environment while exceling in the field, pool, or court. You embody what our founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola, envisioned - a wellrounded student who seeks God in all things and succeeds for the Greater Glory of God.

I commend you and your coaches for keeping God present in all of your activities. I am most proud of the way our Belen teams win while adhering to the rules. We refuse to take shortcuts and accept responsibility for our mistakes. I cannot ask more from you or from your coaches.

The accomplishments of our sports program from the sixth grade level through the varsity level are numerous. The Sixth Grade and Middle School Programs continue to dominate in both the ACC and non-ACC Divisions. Championships in almost every sport were achieved through the hard work and dedication of our young athletes and their coaches. The future looks bright as our middle school student-athletes transition to high school in the coming years.

The High School Program also continued its recent success with another great year. Most of our teams advanced to the state playoff system once again. Additionally, the streak of at least one state championship during the past eleven years continued with our first-ever state championship in tennis.

I could not be prouder of our student-athletes, coaches and parents. May the Holy Spirit continue to guide us in all we do, and may we always strive to achieve our best in both the academic and athletic arenas.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School

Our school is once again in a very good position to win the 4th consecutive 6A division as the best overall Boys athletic program in the state of Florida it will also become the 8th consecutive year in which our Athletic Program finishes among the top two in the State.

The varsity tennis team captured their first state championship in school history and by doing so it extended the school’s state championship winning streak to 11 consecutive years in which one of our varsity teams wins at least one state championship. Belen had never won a state championship in any sport until 1995 when it won a state title in cross country. Carlos Grande, Daniel Martinez, Sebastian Dueñas, Eduardo Scheuren, Juan Rodriguez and Lucas Venegas were great ambassadors for the school during the tennis state championship tournament.

The crew team continued with its dominance in the lightweight divisions and it too won a state championship. Our head Coach Yunian Cabrera was honored at the NY sports club and was awarded the top Youth Coach in the USA. The varsity lightweight 8 took first place honors in the San Diego Regatta which is the top event in the USA.

Coach Richard Stuart retired as our varsity football coach; a job he held since 1984. Coach Stuart retired from his football career as the winningest football coach in Miami-Dade County. The Miami Herald will be honoring him with a lifetime achievement award. Rich, as we affectionally call him, has been instrumental in mentoring thousands of student-athletes, as well as playing a crucial role in getting our student athletes placed into colleges and universities across the country; throughout his career, he has earned the respect and admiration of fellow coaches, teachers, parents and students. This respect and admiration is not just at Belen, but everywhere else. Rich will become Associate Athletic Director in the 2017-2018 school year. Belen grad and assistant football coach in charge of the defense Eduardo Delgado will be our new varsity head coach.

Our student athletes have also proven to not just be outstanding in the field of play, but also in the academic field as well as all other areas of the school and community. Our varsity soccer, football and basketball teams were academic state champions. Every other team made the state’s honorable mention list.

Aitor Fungairiño was an individual state champion and also helped our swim and diving team to a state runner-up finish in two of the relays. The swim and diving team finished as the state runner-up. Alejandro Carriazo, Maximiliano Garcia del Pozo, Juan Ramirez, Daniel Simpson, Hugo Marin and Javier Saumell were instrumental in the success of the team.

Don Chaney became a state champion in the high jump with a jump of 6’8” which was also good for a new school record; Joshua Collins and Sebastian Roa also had outstanding seasons.

Varsity football, cross country, tennis and lacrosse won district championships. Tennis, cross country and swimming also went on to win regional championships. The cross country team finished 3rd in the state championships; the varsity baseball team is currently in the region semifinals.

As always our middle school, JV and freshman teams, which are the backbone of the success of our varsity sports, continue to dominate and represent our school extremely well. Cross country, track and field, basketball, volleyball, golf, tennis, soccer and baseball all won championships in the middle school.

GIAN ZUMPANO AQUATIC CENTER UPDATE:

The Aquatic Center is well underway and completion is expected by the end of this summer. The architect team of John Medina, Maria Moral and Celia Pino are hard at work with all of the details. Contractor Angel Perez on his first such project is also hard at work making sure that this project stays on budget and is finished within the expected time. The expertise and contributions of Baker Concrete, Cemex, Gancedo Lumber’s, Orlando Garcia and Ricky Perez and Paddock Industries have proved to be valuable assets and each has made extremely outstanding contributions to this project. Kevin Roswel of Baker Concrete, with the backing of Mr. Jim Baker, has been an extremely valuable advisor. Needless to say that none of this could ever have been possible without the backing of the Law Firm of Zumpano, Patricios and Winker, Mr. and Mrs. Carlos Zumpano, Dr. Steven Avallone, Mr. and Mrs Enrique Gomez; Mr. Carlos Vara, Mr. Eric Santa-Cruz and the Persant Company, and countless others.

Varsity Cheerleading

This year, the Belen cheerleading team grew to 28 girls. Their skill level and dance ability have increased greatly and ten of the girls were able to participate in the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. They cheered for the varsity football and basketball teams. They got their one legged stunts such as arabesques and liberties and were able to hit new pyramids.

The 2017 baseball season is still underway as the team has once again advanced to the regional semi-finals. The current record of 20-6-1 includes a streak of 15 games without a loss (14-0-1) that saw the Wolverines capture the inaugural “Bishop Bash” tournament championship in Spring Hill, Florida.

The roster is made up of a well balanced mix of sophomores, juniors and seniors and that mix has allowed the team to excel throughout the season and once again achieve the 20 win plateau.

Their versatility, both of the individual players and the team as a unit, has been pivotal in their success on the diamond. The Wolverines have had key regular season wins against nationally ranked University school and perennial powers Baron Collier and Nature Coast high schools.

As we head down the playoff stretch, the team hopes to continue their run through the region - on the quest to return to Ft Myers!

In my first year at Belen Jesuit, I could not have asked for a better group of young men to experience it with! I challenged them to leave a legacy that not only they could be proud of, but also their parents, students and alumni. The season began with a basketball lock-in, giving each other a chance to get to know one another. Our team played an extremely competitive schedule and finished with an admirable record of 18-10. The team was led by our talented backcourt of Javier Torres de Navarra, Marcos Dajer and Alec Rodriguez who all averaged 10 PPG. Juan Carlos Carrillo averaging 7 PPG and 5 RPG was a force down low along with senior Alejandro Barnola. Michael Sueiro, Maurice Milton and Matthew Bravo showed tremendous improvement and provided shooting, energy and versatility. TJ Rosell and Gabriel Seda provided crucial leadership and defense. Christian Tinoco, Luis Diaz, Andy Ros, Jose Plasencia and Lorenzo Luaces all provided strong depth in games and a competitive environment in practice. Highlights of the season included our second straight victory over rival Columbus at UM and making the district championship game where we lost by four to a very good Doral Academy team. Our team also advanced to the regional quarterfinal against Miami Norland Senior High School. Our guys really wanted to leave their mark and meet the challenge presented before the season. I believe that they did and in turn became a group of young men I will never forget.

Team Recognition: 10th Place at Districts and 10th Place at Dade County Youth Fair.

The 2016 Bowling team was presented with a challenging season, as it welcomed four new players to the seven-man roster. Relying heavily on the experience of seniors Michael Ahearn and Jerry Balepogi as well as sophomore Jacob Wutzler, the Wolverines competed against perennial Dade County powers Miami Christian and Killian as well rival Gulliver. Scheduling difficulties limited the team to only six regular season matches, but the squad managed to finish respectably in the tough District 17 playoffs, gathering 10th place in the 16-team bracket. The friendships forged within the team, however, made for a more enjoyable season overall.

The 2016-17 season, which will officially end in August after attending the Canadian Henley for the 5th consecutive year, has been so far a year of unprecedented speed, commitment, and discipline for our varsity crew. Armed with extraordinary athletes, Belen Jesuit Crew took their speed to the end, winning the Scholastic Nationals championship in the varsity lightweight eight for the second year with 180 teams competing from the US and Canada. The spring has been characterized by competition with many fast crews, but our team has recently brought home:

Gold medal in the San Diego Crew Classic, three Sculling States Scholastic cups and three club. Three Sweep States Scholastic cups and for the first time the team won the overall points making us the 2017 state champions.

At the time of this writing, Belen Jesuit Crew continues training for the South East Regionals in Gainesville (GA) to compete with the best team from Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina and Mississippi. We also have the Scholastic National Championships in Pennsauken (NJ) and Youth National Championship in Sarasota.

This year Jonathan Menendez was recruited to row for Georgetown University and Santiago Ugas for the University of Delaware.

The 2016 team was one of the youngest in the history of the program. The team had one senior but this did not deter them from taking their best shot at a state title. The team was led by Joshua Collins all season long. Once again, they were the dominant team in all classifications in South Florida working their way up alongside the top programs in the state. The team fell a bit short of what it hoped to have accomplished at the state finals held in Tallahassee, finishing third amongst a field that included some of the best programs in the state regardless of classification. ONE TEAM.

The 2016 football season was an interesting one to say the least. No previous team had more off field injuries and illnesses to deal with than this 7-4 team. Offensively the team did not have its starting lineup intact until the 7th game of the season. To add the defense had to replace 9 starters from the 2015 team.

Highlights for the season included, capturing the District 15-8A title for the 3rd year in a row, defeating Gulliver for the 12th consecutive time and a historic trip and game in Ireland. Other highlights included wining the Homecoming game for the 22nd year in a row, a thrilling last second win over district rival Southwest, our other wins were against LaSalle, Pace, Braddock, Varela, Coral Reef and Ferguson. Tough losses included Marist High of Atlanta (GA), Keys Gate, 87th Avenue and a heartbreaking last second loss to Palmetto in the regional playoffs.

The coaching staff would like to thank the 2017 Senior class for their excellent leadership and instilling and great sense of team brotherhood. We would also like to wish the seniors great prosperity in their future endeavors.

The Belen Jesuit golf team finished a successful season with 8 wins and 2 losses dual match record. The team was led all year by junior Enrique Vila and freshman Beto Perez with identical 9 hole scoring averages of 37.2. The season was highlighted by a 3rd place finish at the Dade County Youth Fair Tournament followed by a second place finish at Districts and a 4th place finish at Regionals. Also contributing to the team’s success was the steady play of team captain Daniel Chavez, along with Guille Najera and Manu Romero.

Both Enrique Vila and Beto Perez received 2nd Team All Dade County honors with Daniel Chavez receiving an honorable mention. Perez and Vila led the team at Regionals with scores of 74 each, where Enrique Vila won a sudden death 3 way playoff that allowed him to represent Belen at the state championship. Playing as an individual Enrique placed 20th out of more than 90 golfers in his division.

Team Recognition: District Champions.

After graduating 19 players from the 2016 team, I did not know what to expect for the 2017 season. We knew we were very young. As a team we worked very hard in the off season. It showed right away as we went 4-0 in the Pope John Paul Academy Pre Season Classic and won the Championship. Once again we beat Columbus, also in the regular season we finally beat Gulliver Prep. We ended the regular season with a 14-4 record. 8 players made 1st Team All-District, and 4 players made 1st Team All Dade. Nicholas Smith (attack), Robert Fernandez (midfield), Nico Perez-Blanco (defense), and Josh Lara (LSM). Robert Fernandez was named Miami Dade County Player of the Year. Four players also made the All-Region team Nicholas Smith, Robert Fernandez, Nico Perez-Blanco and Josh Lara. Once again we made our mark on the district banner defeating Miami Country Day and Ransom Everglades in the district final. We hammered Western High School in our first regional play in game. But then fell short in OT against Gulliver Prep in the regional semifinal. I want to thank our senior class: Maurice Milton, Josh Lara, Patrick Perez, Joseph Parlade, Andres Poveda, Raphael Perez Blanco and last but not least Pedro “Papo” Garcia. I would like to thank my coaching staff Chris Baiocco, Angel Diaz, Roger Lara and Joseph Bellando. The varsity 2017 season came with many unexpected situations that caused us to not achieve better results at the end. After losing 16 players the foundation of the team needed to be rebuilt. Also taking into consideration that some players left during the district tournament, we had to reconsider our strategy and attitude; but just like in life, every challenge presents an opportunity to learn and grow.

Next season we will adopt a new attitude of work ethic, the earlier we get started the better so we can achieve our dreams. We will keep working with our soccer program with the same care, responsibility and the art of perfecting the beautiful game. Our objectives are to earn more state championships, therefore raising the name of Belen to the highest.

For varsity tennis, the 2017 season was about turning potential and promise into results and triumph. The team was led by co-captains Danny Martinez (Sr.) and Charlie Grande (Jr.). After a difficult regular season, the team came together and won their district over 5 other teams. With dominating wins in the regional semifinal against Pembroke Pines Charter and in the regional final against Doral Academy, the team was headed to the state tournament.

Once at states, every player on the roster stepped up and delivered. A quarterfinal victory over Braden River was highlighted by a Doubles #2 win from seniors Juan Rodriguez and Lucas Venegas. In the semifinal round against Fort Myers, Rodriguez partnered with senior Eduardo Scheuren, who stepped in for an injured Venegas, to come back from down 5-2 in the 2nd set to win 5 straight games and the 3rd set tiebreaker to help send the team to the finals.

In the finals, the team turned to their top 3 players for wins against Niceville. Martinez and Grande teamed up for a victory at the Doubles #1 position. Junior Sebastian Dueñas, who did not lose a match all postseason, earned the 2nd point of the round by winning in the #3 position. Soon after, Grande won his match in straight sets to bring Belen to 3 points. With all eyes on Martinez, the senior who did not surrender a single set during postseason play, delivered on match point to earn the 4th and clinching point of the match and bring Belen their first ever state title in tennis.

The core of the team was made up of underclassman and although their inexperience showed at times, their desire to compete and succeed was that of a veteran. There are two qualities coaches look for mostly in athletes: coachability and consistency. All season long we could count on our top three state qualifiers Joshua Collins, Don Chaney and Sebastian Roa to give you performances that you can count on for team points. The three of them combined to finish in 11th place at the state meet with 20 points. Together with the core of the team all three come back next season to see if we can take a shot at the state title.

I feel honored to have coached such an amazing group of boys this season and I’m already looking forward to the next one. Next year is going to be an even better year, and we will definitely be the team to look out for during the season.

This year the JV baseball team had a record of 15-7. At the start of the year this team was very young, but had the talent to have a very successful season. Each player on the team made individual improvements to help in our overall group effort. This team had the opportunity to play several top programs in South Florida and displayed what it truly means to be a Christian Student-Athlete. The future of the Belen Jesuit baseball program has a tremendous upside.

The freshman Wolverines had their ups and downs throughout the season that included some signature wins and big performances. The offense was led by Gavin Cancio, who also had a stellar season on defense. Sebastian Riguero, Robert Fernandez, and Jack Sampedro were all fantastic on the mound and always kept Belen in games. Despite being made up of mostly 8th graders the freshman team had wins over Mater Lakes, and Brito just to name a few.

This year’s junior varsity basketball team had another outstanding season. The team finished with an impressive record of 21-4, playing a tough schedule and having several injuries to key players. This group of players came together as a unit for the first time this season. They played relentless pressure defense and fast break oriented offense, which enabled them to outscore their opponents by an average of 20 points per game. Season highlights included remarkable wins over Christopher Columbus at the Watsco Center at the campus of the University of Miami, Doral Academy, North Port High School from Sarasota, Lehigh High School from Ft. Myers, Sunset and Coral Reef High School.

Daniel Sueiro, Manuel Becerra, Joaquin Novoa, Mario Cobo, Andre Rodz, Robert Lopez, Christopher Klemick and Diego Segurola were instrumental all season in scoring, rebounding, steals, assists, and defense. Christopher Maza, Daniel Cantens, Sean Luc Beaubien, Sebastian Lezcano, Nicolas Salvat, and Nicholas Mullis also contributed and provided valuable help and leadership throughout the whole season. A special mention to Sean Luc Beaubien for demonstrating incredible strength and courage after a very tough injury. All these players responded in a very positive manner to all that was asked of them during a very long and demanding period. This year’s team was very dedicated and worked extremely arduous at all tasks that was required of them. The players accepted and embraced the fact that they had to be disciplined and unselfish. They had to sacrifice and trust each other. Great sportsmanship was always exhibited in every game. All these experiences and demands will hopefully make each player also be more successful in life.

With more than 70% novice athletes comprising our Belen Jesuit freshman crew, our team has achieved a top 4th position among the Florida crews by recently competing in the State Sculling Championship regatta finishing with a silver medal in the quad bringing home the Scholastic Championship cup and fourth in the eight with coxswain. The freshman team is currently training for the Southeast Regional Championship regatta, competing with crews not only from Florida, but from Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. The season will end with the team’s participation in the Scholastic National Championships, in Pennsauken (NJ).

The middle school crew team had an undefeated 2016-2017 season. Our team has maintained their 1st place in the same categories as last year, with a remarkable speed that has made them win every race for more than 5 seconds in every regatta they have competed. Indian Creek (Miami Beach), Duathlon at the Bend (Sarasota), Novice regatta (Orlando), American Youth Cup Series I (Sarasota), Sarasota Invitational (Sarasota) and locally Miami International regatta.

This year’s season was a bit unusual. We had a late start, due to the varsity’s trip to Ireland. We also had several games cancelled, by our opponents. It was as always a pleasure to coach the JV. We moved up a big group of players to the varsity, which in itself makes the season a successful one, and many will likely contribute in the 2017 season. We will again have a young squad next year, with many of this year’s freshmen moving up to the varsity as sophomores. We look forward to working with the returning sophomores, and the young players the middle school has moving up.

When imagining a JV team, you generally picture a group of young men who aren’t skilled enough for the varsity level and don’t take the sport as serious. At first, the JV lacrosse team certainly fit that description. The team spirit was at an all time low from blowing leads and losing to our rivals. After several losses, sprints and dropped passes, the players slowly found their hunger to become better players. Having players like Lucas Rodriguez and Jacob Marrero and Tomas Puente certainly made it easier on the coaches to change the team’s joking-around mind-set due to their natural competitive drive. It appeared that the boys finally realized that being on a JV team isn’t a joke and is just a stepping stone to making a difference on the varsity level. Finishing the season off with three straight convincing wins was surely satisfying and well earned for the players and coach. There were also several players who were brought up to varsity by the end of the season for their hard work. We ended the season with a 7-7 record. I would like to thank all the parents for their support.

The team was led by its top point and assist provider David Fernandez. The ball movement tone was set by both David and Tomas Puente, which encouraged a well-distributed scoring output from the team. Many games ended with most, if not all, players marking on the score sheet. Josh Cecol and Frank Parades defended the paint admirably while Christian Eiroa and Joseph Perez helped the team average 2 blocks per game. Herman Suarez led the team in three pointers while Nick Rodriguez, John-Michael Tonda, Jonathan Cosio, Tomas Puente and David Fernandez helped with the team’s sharp shooting from behind the arc. Dorian Gonzalez led the team in steals with his strength and tenacity, his ability to bring his aggressiveness to the game helped us win multiple close games. A revenge victory at Franklin Academy during their homecoming celebration was one of the highlights of the season. This season was full of growth, not only in basketball but as men. Alejandro Morales, Michael Navarro and Cody Aguirre provided high energy defense and unique rebounding to every game they entered. The Wolverine family will be proud of their efforts and be excited for what’s to come, both on and off the court.

The Belen middle school boys had yet another successful baseball season. Once again they dominated ACC competition by going 8-1-1, with victories over St. Kevin, St. Theresa, Epiphany and others . The Wolverines also had an out of ACC schedule in which they had victories over Keys Gate, Florida Christian, Westminster Christian, just to name a few. Our offense was led by 7th graders Sal Stewart, Ryan Cainzos and Christopher Bayo. Our pitching was outstanding throughout the season primarily led by 8th graders Francis Cruz and 7th grader Kevin Castro. Whenever they got into trouble Sal Stewart and Mathew Huembes were key relievers throughout the season. Each and every player on the roster at some point in the season contributed to the team’s success, while playing the game with integrity and sportsmanship.

MS BASKETBALL

This season was extremely rewarding, not just because the team was successful on the court, but more importantly because they came together as a team. They started the season winning the first 15 games, and finished the season 29-1. The boys finished undefeated in their division by beating Epiphany in the championship game, earning the All Catholic Conference title. The gold team was led by the great guard play of Andy Chavez, who led the team in scoring. Luke Pennie, Sal Stewart, and Mike Zaharas all contributed with their impressive offense. Justin Jarro, Wadih Pazos, Johnny Hernandez and Marcos Pastor brought energy, defense, and the will to compete every game. Matthew Diaz, Alex Beaubien, Sebastian Lazo, Alejandro Gonzalez and Andy Bello brought a great attitude and unselfishness play on the court. Mariano Brito and Daniel Del Riesgo, despite injuries, worked hard to get healthy and finish the season. I’m very proud of the team’s improvement and desire to learn and get better with every game played. The boys went on to finish the season by winning the Orange Bowl Invitational Championship against Miami Springs. This tournament included public school teams and despite the tough competition, the gold team rose to the occasion to end at the top.

The middle school blue team had a great season finishing with 19 wins and 6 losses. However, this team will be remembered not just for their record, but, rather, their ability to win close games and stay in close games no matter the opponent.

The team was led by the team’s leading scorer, Adrian Delgado who averaged 10 points per game, and Gabriel Marrero, who’s ability to rebound and score in the paint was key to the team’s success. Andrew Diaz’s tenacious defense and ability to finish at the rim was paramount in helping the team win many close games. The calm demeanor and clutch play of David Ortiz and Evan Garcia down the stretch was the difference in the team’s many victories by 5 points or less. Marcial De Sautu and Daniel Fernandez provided the team with consistent guard play and an impressive ability to box out and rebound against much larger opponents. Kevin Freyre and Adam Magoulas’ timely three point shooting from the perimeter opened up the floor offensively and allowed the offense to flourish. Carlos Morales and Addison Arnholt contributed solid playmaking ability, hard-nosed defense and rebounding off the bench. Santiago Ariza, Michael Martelly, Marc Menendez, Michael Corral and Robert Castro all provided high energy defense and were vital in key victories throughout the season.

The mark of great runners is consistency, meaning that you can always count on them to perform well no matter what. That consistency is the key to success. Our program once again finds itself with a group of runners who possess and exhibit the qualities necessary to be great. The team worked hard since the summer and their hard work paid off. The team dominated the middle school scene in South Florida by going unbeaten. They captured once again the Dade County, All Catholic Conference and Catholic School State Championships.

Austin San Juan, Adam Magoulas, Diego Gomez, Carlos Corzo, Benjamin Pasternac, Adrian Delgado, Tomas Duque and Sebastian Castillo represented the team at the Florida Youth Runners Association (FLYRA) State Championship where the team came in second after a very tough fight.

The future looks promising for the middle school and high school programs. Being a part of the best cross country program in the history of the state comes with great responsibility, but our kids are up to the challenge. With hard work, determination, and faith in God anything is possible for those who believe.

The middle school football team once again had a very successful season. The development of the players for the High School was the primary concern. The team finished with 3 wins and 2 losses. In the opener the team defeated archrival Gulliver 16-6. A loss to Division champion Westminster followed but the team bounced back with two consecutive wins over Somerset and Ransom Everglades. In the Bowl Game the team lost a tight game to University. On offense the team was led by an outstanding line and quarterback Dorian Gonzalez. Defensively Marc Adams, Wadih Pazos and Chris Gomez led the team in tackles.

The middle school golf team had an undefeated season this year on its way to a 4 and 0 record. The season was highlighted by wins over rivals Gulliver and Ransom Everglades. Leading the team were 8th graders Carlos Iglesias, Andres Grande, and Daniel Casariego along with the consistent play of 7th grader Sebastian Barcia.

This team had much depth with each of its 8 players contributing towards its success. Robbie Lizama, Carlos PerezAbreu, John Bohatch, and 6th grader Adrian Rodriguez also contributed toward the success of the team.

The future looks bright for Belen golf as the 8th graders move on to the high school level and the middle schoolers come back to build a solid base for our program.

With a 10-0 record, the middle school gold team earned the title of best middle school team in all of Miami! This is the first lacrosse team in Belen history to have an undefeated season. Playing with finesse and poise far beyond their years, the team dominated their opponents. The season was highlighted with big program victories over 4x Miami champion Gulliver, Westminster, Palmetto and Ransom. Keep a lookout for these boys next year as they will be making a huge impression on the varsity season.

This season was truly a season of learning, not only for the players but for the coaches as well since this was the first season coaching for the two of them. The goal of the middle school blue team is to develop players so they can move up through the program. Having to learn everything from how to hold a lacrosse stick to key game strategies, it was a lot to process but they took it in stride. The blue team won two games and showed great promise and potential talent.

The middle school gold team was full of talent that has the potential to one day make history for Belen. A solid group of defenders, combined with the quality and tenacity that the midfielders had was all brought together by the goal scoring ability of the forwards. The team won eleven games and lost only one game as they earned Belen another ACC championship. A bright future awaits them as they continue to grow in the classroom and on the field.

The middle school blue team started the season with a loss, but then went on to win 7 consecutive games landing them a place in the playoffs. They are a team with the heart of a lion, ready for any challenge.

This past middle school swimming season has been the best since I began coaching for Belen. I was amazed at the sheer number of swimmers that joined the team. These boys trained very hard in the three months that I coached and I believe they will swim even better in the years to come as they move up from MS to varsity. I feel like swimming has brought these young men together and given them an opportunity to be part of a team and a family resulting in life long bonds. I am glad to have been able to coach the middle school swim team this past season and hope to see the same or even more accomplishments completed by these young men in the years to come. We had a very successful 2017 middle school tennis season. Many new players joined the program and the returning players made tremendous improvement. The highlight of the year was an all-around team victory at the Tropical Park Cup Middle School Tennis Championship. The team was led by 7th grader Alejandro Villarreal and 8th grader Nicolas Alarcon, who both won their bracket and earned points for Belen. The team also displayed a great deal of chemistry which will help them as they look to contribute to the varsity tennis team in a few years.

The 2017 middle school track and field team had an exciting season. The team found good leadership in a small group of 8th graders and relied heavily on the talents of the 7th grade, which bodes well for the future. The team had an impressive display at the Dade County Championships in the beginning of the season and then went toe to toe, trading victories, with Saint Timothy in the conference season. The challenge was welcomed and at the end of the year, the team prevailed and went on to win the most important conference meet of the year, The ACC Championship. We thank the 8th graders for their commitment, and wish them the best as they move on to high school.

The boys of 6th grade baseball had a very successful first season at Belen. Alex Sosa and Derek Tamargo led the way with batting averages over .600 and were leaders on and off the field. Helping them out was Jaymel Estrada with excellent catching. The pitching was outstanding with Andres Salvade and Nick montes on the mound. The young Wolverines had victories over St. Theresa, St. Brendan, Our Lady of Lourdes. In the last game of the season, the boys came from 5 runs down in the last inning to beat St. Kevin in an exhilarating walk-off win. The future is bright for the Wolverine baseball program.

This was an amazing season! The players bonded very quickly and from the beginning they worked hard and with great intensity. The team was not big in size by any means, but what they lacked in height they made up in heart. They hustled and battled to the very end, every single game. They finished the season undefeated, with a 19-0 record. Danny Fernandez and Marcial De Sautu led the team in scoring and assists. Danny Portuondo and Alex Marquez gave stability and consistency at the guard position, while Nicholas Paz and Kevin Garcia gave the spark necessary to close out tough games. Gabriel Segurola, Andrew Berrocal and Matheus Guerra added the toughness needed to compete at such a high level. Andrew Navarro, Gabriel Sixto, Alex Sosa, Carlos Caban, Gabriel Alonso and Marcelo Morales all contributed to the 6th graders’ success and showed great team spirit.

This talented group of runners began the season by getting first place in the first meet and never looked back. The team went undefeated the rest of the year in dominating fashion. It is not often that a group of sixth graders comes together and performs so well in a brief period of time.

The top three runners Carlos Corzo, Luis Dulzaides and Eric Barreto were frequent top 10 finishers in the competitions. While Andrew Gonzalez, Nico Paz, Hely Santeliz, Marco Delamaza and Pablo Rodriguez showed the depth of the team by giving great support in the 4-7 scoring spots of the races.

Although our record on paper was not good, this year’s 6th grade football season was very successful. This year’s group developed character, a great work ethic, discipline, and accountability. We were able to see these players mature, develop into good young men as well as good football players. At the beginning of the season, we were beaten by Somerset pretty badly. Fortunately, we were able to play them again at the end of the season. Unfortunately, we ran out of time and we were 20 yards short from scoring the winning touchdown. After the game, we realized how much the team had improved. We also earned the respect of our opponent. The team kept getting better and better each week. The future of Belen football looks very promising as these boys move up the ranks.

6TH GRADE SOCCER

As the new 6th graders got to know each other, the team chemistry grew. The team record was 7-1-1 as they showed that the Belen soccer program’s future is bright. The team played very well as they learned to keep the ball moving, preparing them for the Belen varsity style of play. The young talented team ended the season beating the Gulliver Academy middle school team 1-0 away from home. The future of Belen soccer is in good hands with the amount of talent flooding into the program.

The 2017 6th grade track team exemplified everything you want out of a young group. They were balanced in every aspect of the sport: sprinting, distance and field. The team won every meet they participated in, and in a dominating fashion. The team had a lot of depth which is healthy for competition and will be ready to compete with the upcoming 8th graders to make a difference on the MS team. The future of Belen track and field is bright.
