The  great  American  newspaper  columnist  and  political  commentator  George  Will  once wrote  that,  “Sports  serve  society  by  providing  vivid  examples  of  excellence.”  Nothing  truer can be  said  of  Belen’s  scholar athletes.  Their  commitment  to  excel  on  the  field  of  play  can only  be  equaled  by  their  extraordinary  commitment  to  excel  in  the  classroom.  The  athlete at  Belen  Jesuit  is  like  no  other  in  school  sports.  Academic  and  spiritual  standards  are  under no  circumstances  lowered  or  even  accommodated  simply  because  the  student  throws  a  ball or  jumps  a  hurdle.  This  expectation  places  our  men  in  an  elite class.

For  over  162  years  the  Belen  Jesuit  athlete  has  helped  define  the  Ignatian magis.  This year  alone,  Belen  Jesuit  athletics  has  won  an  unprecedented  nine  district  titles,  three regional  tournaments  and  two  state  championships.  The  thousands  of  hours  of  practice, fueled  by  a  passion  for  victory  that  does  not  belong  simply  to  the  athlete  or  his  team  but  to the  whole  Belen  community,  is  a  trademark  of  excellence  that  enhances  the  Jesuit  spirit that  pervades  every  corner  of  the  Belen  Jesuit  campus.

Tonight’s  sports  banquet  is  a  necessary  pause  in  the  hectic  routine  of  our  school community  to  recognize  the  efforts  and  achievements  of  our  athletes  and  coaches.  It  is  a thank  you  for  their  determination  to  proudly  defend  their  home  when  rival  teams  approach our  campus.  It  is  a  collective  applause  for  their  ambassadorship  as  they  proudly  dawn  their school  logo  and  colors  and  race  onto  foreign  and  often  hostile  fields,  courts,  pools,  and lakes  and  witness  to  sportsmanship  and  perseverance.  It  is  a  simple  honor  bestowed  upon young  scholars  who  understand  that  the  greatness  of  Belen  is  not  only  found  in laboratories  and  desk ridden  rooms,  but  in  determined  play,  well spent  sweat,  and heartfelt  physical  strain.

On  behalf  of  the  whole  Belen  community,  I  want  to  congratulate  our  athletes,  their coaches,  and  the  Belen  Jesuit  athletic  program for  another  wildly  successful  year  and encourage  them,  in  both  victory  and  defeat,  to  never  forget  our  school’s  battle  cry:  Our Lady  of  Belen…  Pray  for  Us!

Dear Student-Athletes,

We would like to congratulate you on your achievements in all your athletic events this year. At Belen Jesuit we strive to give you the best resources available. We encourage you to be competitive in the fields because we understand that through sports, you are experiencing selflessness, endurance, determination, and challenge.

With every athletic accomplishment you have acquired many important skills needed to succeed in life. Besides learning the rules of different spo rts, you have cultivated lifelong values of teamwork, leadership, dedication, commitment, sportsmanship, and goal setti ng. Moreover, you have maintained composure, developed a hard work ethic, balanced busy schedules, and lived a healthy lifestyle in order to reach individual and team goals. All in all, you have embraced the “magis.” We are proud of you!

We would also like to express our deepest gratitude to Coach Barquín, our Athletic Director, as well as the coaches and P.E. teachers who have contributed to your formation as Belen Scholar Athletes.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School

Our school is poised to win its third consecutive 6A best overall boys program for the State of Florida. It is also our 7th consecutive year of finishing either 1st or 2nd in that competition. Our varsity baseball team has advanced deep into the playoffs and is looking to make it to the state final four for the third time in school history.

Our varsity soccer team and varsity water polo teams made history by not only winning State Championships, but doing so in perfect fashion as both teams went undefeated. The water polo team has now captured back to back state titles and the soccer team did it for the first time in school history! Coaches Tanger Mendonça (soccer) and Jimmy Aguilera (water polo) were selected as coaches of the year for the State of Florida. Frankie de la Camara and Pablo Kurzan were chosen as Mr. Soccer and Mr. Water Polo respectively as the best players in the state. The State Championships in water polo and soccer also extended our string of winning at least one State Championship to 11 consecutive years.

This coming season, our varsity football team will be making history by playing a football game in Ireland.

Our crew program continues to navigate unchartered waters as they dominate the lightweight divisions, not only in the state, but also at the national and international level. Our team was selected to compete in the Royal Henley Regatta in London and this Spring managed to capture first places at the San Diego Crew Classic and winning the sculling lightweight 4, varsity lightweight 2, freshman 4, and finishing runners up in the pairs, varsity 4, and varsity lightweight 8’s.

This year also recorded an unprecedented 9 district titles in the sports of football, golf, cross country, baseball, track and field, soccer, lacrosse, water polo, and volleyball.

Our student-athletes continue to make headlines; not just in the field of play, but also in the academic front. David Fager became our first student to be selected to the FHSAA Academic All-State team. The overall winner will be announced in June. Tavish Rice was selected as a Miami Herald scholar-athlete finalist for his outstanding academic record and his on-the-field accomplishments in the sports of football and soccer. All of our teams have made the FHSAA Academic honor roll and our football team finished 1st overall. Spring sports winners are yet to be announced.

Another record number of student-athletes have committed to play at the next level. So far a total of 21 have signed with colleges and universities. The commitment of other student-athletes are yet to be announced.

Sophomore Joshua Collins and senior Jaime Lopez made first team All-State in cross country. Making the FACA All-Star teams were Christian del Castillo (baseball), Frankie de la Camara (Soccer) and Anthony Castro (Soccer). Frankie de la Camara also set a new school record for goals in a season (59) and career (100). Lacrosse player Daniel Dager made US Lacrosse Academic All-American. The 200 Medley relay composed of Alejandro Carriazo, Juan Ramirez, Maximiliano Garcia del Pozo and Daniel Simpson won states. Tennis players Daniel Martinez and Carlos Grande were state runner-up in #1 Doubles. Seniors who stood out in crew and who will be going on to row at their Universities are Christian Burke, Ben Gilbert, Daniel Brennan and David Gonzalez.

As always, our middle school, freshman and JV athletic program provide an outstanding base for the future of our sports at the varsity level. Our middle school program, which is the foundation of our athletic success down the road, continues to be dominant in their respective conference.

AQUATIC AND SWIMMING POOL PROJECT UPDATE:

Our long awaited pool project is finally underway. Construction is scheduled to take approximately 10 to 12 months. This project would not be where it is at if it were not for the leadership of Mr. Joseph Zumpano and the law firm of Zumpano, Patricios and Winker, Mr. Jim Baker of Baker Concrete, the Cemex Company, Dr. Steve Avallone, Mr. Peter Jimenez and Mrs. Jamile Jimenez, Architect John Medina and his architectural firm. Also key to getting off the ground were the endorsement and support of the Belen Jesuit Administration and Development Office that include; Fr. Pedro Suarez S.J., Fr. Guillermo Garcia-Tuñon S.J., Fr. Ernesto Travieso S.J., Mrs. Carola Calderin, Mr. Thomas de Quesada, Mr. Carlos Zumpano, builder Mr. Angel Perez and many others. This project is budgeted at 2.5 million dollars of which we have received pledges/donations totaling approximately 60%. We also intend to lower the actual cost of construction by deducting through kind donations. For example, Quick Sand and Mr. Willy Pujals donated the demolition of the shelter and the tennis courts, Mr. Carlos Vara of Tropical container donated two containers for storage and office space and Mr. Eric Santa-Cruz of Persant Company will be donating the excavation of the pool. We welcome all kinds of donations so that this project does not have to suffer any delays. As always, none of these things would ever be possible without the entire support of our alumni base, parents, students and the Belen family and its friends.

The varsity baseball team made a deep run in the State playoffs in 2016, winning the District and the Region to advance to the Sate Final Four in Ft. Myers.

They put together a late season nine game winning streak which included wins over Sunset and Doral to capture the District and extra-inning, thrilling victories - on the road - over Pembroke Pines Charter in the Regional Semis and over Dwyer in the Regional Final.

The team had a fine mix of young men in the program. Their energy, commitment, confidence and fluidity especially throughout the past month and a half was absolutely fantastic. All members of the team provided everything they had to help the team advance each and every step of the way.

This is a team of young men worthy of being celebrated and cherished. Their character, performance, work ethic and jocularity have made them a group that is extremely enjoyable to be around both on the field and off of it. They have left a great mark in the history books of Belen and in the process energized the entire Belen community during the month of May and beyond. This group truly exemplifies what it means to be “Men for Others!”

The varsity basketball team had one of the most spectacular regular seasons in recent memory with a 21 win and 4 loss record. When you look up the definition of chemistry in the dictionary, a picture of this year’s team is depicted. The seniors and juniors all supported and truly cared about each other. The seniors also took under their wing our freshman and helped him transition to the varsity team and into a starting role. Although the team did not know that it was coach Roca’s last season, they played as if they knew. They certainly made his 19th varsity season, and his 28th season overall, memorable.

The team was led by Daniel Romeu with 13 points, 9 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game, Alfredo Consuegra with 10 points, 3.5 assists, and 2 steals per game, Alec Rodriguez with 9 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game, and David Salazar with 7 points, 2 assists, and 3 rebounds per game. Luis Mejer and Gabriel Cabrera contributed with solid experience and playmaking off the bench. Daniel Puente always supplied high energy defense, while Alejandro Barnola and Juan Carrillo were the dynamic duo at the center position. Javier Torres de Navarra, Maurice Milton, and Matthew Bravo contributed consistently throughout the season as well.

Coach Roca would like to thank his family, his players, his assistant coaches - most notably Ruben Marrero and Vince Fernandez, Carlos Barquin, Victor Arrieta and all those who have made the past 28 years of coaching a great blessing in his life.

With only two underclassmen returning from the 2014 squad, the 2015 varsity bowling team found itself in a rebuilding year. Nevertheless, the mix of seniors Claudio Laratelli, Kevin Fernandez, and Jerry Trujillo, juniors Jerry Balepogi and Michael Ahearn, Freshman Jacob Wutzler, and sixth grader Justin Eckstein focused not only on improving individually, but also having fun along the way. Throughout the season, it was evident to supporters and foes that the members enjoyed the thrill of competition while maintaining a positive attitude, win or lose. The highlight of the season occurred when an unprecedented crowd of students and teachers packed Bird Bowl for the Columbus match, an event that left opposing coaches and staff amazed. Given the team’s inexperience, its ninth place showing (out of 16) at the district playoffs was quite respectable and a fitting end to the season. The Wolverines hope to build on the core of returning “veterans” to have an even more fulfilling 2016 campaign.

The 2015-16 season, which will officially end in August after attending the Canadian Henley for the 4th consecutive year, has been so far a year of unprecedented speed, commitment, and discipline for our varsity crew. Armed with extraordinary athletes, Belen Jesuit crew took their speed to the end, winning in Scholastic Nationals five gold medals in the varsity lightweight double, varsity lightweight four, varsity lightweight quad, varsity lightweight eight and varsity single sweeping all the lightweights events and been the fastest lightweight program in the nation for the second year with 180 teams competing from US and Canada.

For the first time our team participated in the Henley Royal Regatta in London traveling with a total of 14 athletes. Belen crew competed in The Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup (JM8+) and The Fawley Challenge Cup (JM4x). The spring has been characterized by competition with many fast crews. Our accolades are: the varsity lightweight 8+ crew took first place in the San Diego crew classic competing with the fastest program in the nation, with this victory Belen Jesuit crew earned #1 in the United States. Seven Sculling States Scholastic cups and one club cup in the following events: varsity 4x, varsity 2x, varsity 1x, Junior 2x, varsity lightweight 4x, varsity Lightweight 2x, freshman 4x. Five sweep states scholastic cups and four club cups in the following events: varsity pair, 2nd varsity 4+, varsity lightweight 4+, varsity 4+ and varsity lightweight 8+.

At the time of this writing, Belen Jesuit crew continues training for South East Regionals in Sarasota, FL to compete with the best team from Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama,North Carolina, South Carolina and Mississippi. Also Scholastic National Championships in Nashport, OH and Youth National Championship in West Windsor, NJ.

This year the team captain Christian Burke was recruited to row for St Joseph University, Ben Gilbert University of Delaware, Daniel Brennan U Penn and David Gonzalez Harvard University.

Success is defined in different ways. If you define success by measuring up to the accomplishments that previous Belen cross country teams have produced, then this season’s fourth place finish at the FHSAA State final at first seems underwhelming given the resounding success of our program over the last decade. However, one of the benefits of coaching at Belen Jesuit is the fact that we have an opportunity to teach our athletes that sometimes, despite our goal always remaining producing the top team in the State, success is measured not by state championship trophies but by a commitment to sacrifice and work wholeheartedly towards a goal greater than oneself. As a coaching staff, when we use this measuring stick as our means to define success, we feel overwhelmingly certain that this season produced one of the most successful cross country seasons in our program’s history. From seniors like Nicolas Roca, Jaime Lopez, and Bruno Zayas refusing to allow injuries to derail their attempts at pouring their hearts out and running their hardest every time they laced up their shoes, to sophomore third place state finisher and season top runner Josh Collins always competing phenomenally at every race he ran, this team was incredibly united, focused, and one of the teams we’ve most enjoyed coaching ever. We thank the parents and athletes for succeeding in building a successful season that saw the continued growth of our young athletes into greater Men for Others, and we cannot wait to see how next season’s team continues defining success for our program.

The 2015 football Wolverines were once again district champions finishing a perfect 5-0 in District 15-8A. The stout experienced defense with 9 senior starters led the way with several dominating performances including 3 shutouts. These shutouts were against Gulliver, Ferguson and Coral Reef. The young offense with just 4 senior starters struggled early on but gained valuable experience with each game and by mid season the running and passing game was clicking on all cylinders. Top offensive games included 44 points against Ferguson, 43 versus Felix Varela and a season high 51 points in the Braddock game. Continuing their football careers at the university level are Tavish Rice-Princeton, Mario Robaina-Case Western, Pablo Venegas-Claremont McKenna, Andres Cesin-Central College Iowa, Fernando Pujals-University of West Florida, Ariel Jimenez-John Carroll University, Andres Guisasola- Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), Gio Menocal-FIU and Joe Garcia-FSU. At the Dade County Youth Fair Belen scored 302, the lowest team score ever to clinch the victory. Leo Herrera, A.J. Martinez, Andrew Cecol, Enrique Vila, and Jose Perez led the team, all with 9 hole average scores under 40.

Team Recognition: District Champions.

It was the final whistle after falling short in our first district championship game appearance in 2015 that we knew our mission for 2016: Bring home the school’s first District Title. We went to work. Countless hours were put into off-season training in the weight room, in film sessions, and in brutal practice sessions on the field. All of which was well worth it as we succeeded and raised the trophy after thrashing Columbus HS 16-8. We had a special group of players this year and they worked together to do things never before accomplished on a Belen lacrosse field. We finished the season with a record of 193, which ties the most wins in a season by a single lacrosse team in Miami. We had never cracked a top 20 ranking in the state and we ended the season ranked 12th in the state for LAXPOWER. It was our first time beating teams like Ransom Everglades, Cypress Bay, Boca Raton HS and Tampa Jesuit. We even won our first region game, before falling 5-7 in a heartbreaking loss to Gulliver in the Regional semi’s.

As some would say, “The Stats Don’t Lie,” and our team led the state in Net Goals Per Game (GPG) with a +10.73 GPG while boasting the lowest goals against average in the state (4.33 GPG) and the third highest goals for average (15.27 GPG). Our defense was led by 1st Team All-Dade Goalie Mat Salas(Guilford), 1st Team All-Dade Defensemen Oscar Ortega (Wheeling Jesuit) and Luis Corps (Oglethorpe), honorable mention All-Dade Defense Joseph Cruz, 2nd Team All-District Defense Danny Garcia-Tuñon (MDHC), 1st Team All-Dade LSM Joshua Lara, Ted Huertas (Catholic University), Alejandro Gonzalez, Nick Arias, Raphael Perez-Blanco and Lucas Verdeja. Our offense was lead by 1st Team All-Dade Attack Gabriel Garcia (Dowling), 1st Team All-Dade Midfield John Powell (UF), 1st Team All-District Attack Daniel Dager (Yale) and Deiter Prussing, 1st Team All-District Midfield Brian Pascual (UF), Robert Fernandez, Patrick Arean (Fordham), Richie Perez (FSU), Danny Hondal (Penn State), Adrian Rey, Maurice Milton, Nico Smith, Rogelio Consuegra, and the “Flamingo Kid” Ignacio Lopez-Castro. Special recognition goes to our 2nd team All-Dade Face-off specialist Ricky Mayo who had an amazing 74% win rate. Coach Bellando received the “US Lacrosse South Florida Chapter Coach of the Year” award.

I would like to thank Father Willie, Coach Barquin and his staff for all their support. There are not enough words to describe a State Champion team. A team that with humility, hard work, dedication and perseverance reached the dream of every high school player of being a State Champion. This team was simply a dream that became reality.

Dynamic, intelligent, analytical, strong, respectful, loyal to the ideas set forth by the coach the team went through the season without tasting defeat. They achieved this through sacrifices at important times, being responsible of taking care of themselves when they needed to and more importantly a group of friends that made a promise to fight for each other and be champions. The team was honored with proclamations by Miami-Dade County and the Florida State Senate. The team also ended the season ranked #7 in the Country according to the National Soccer Coaches Association. The best team of all time well deserved of being called undefeated champions, men who transformed a program into reality. In an extremely competitive year and in a difficult training environment, the Belen swim team endured & performed! This year was quite a challenge. Many local facilities were either down for repairs or closed for complete renovation. The team endured weeks & months of training in a season under duress.

Last year we were “Runner-Up”. Last year we graduated Five “Scoring” seniors. This team (with no seniors) over-came many challenges and we are proud of their leadership and commitment. In the end, the boys were strong! “overcoming and performing” was this year’s team statement! Committing to competition and then enduring the training situation reflects on this team’s character. As our standard for work & commitment involves being mindful and “being the best you can,” we all believe in a strong work ethic. We always refer to State Meet as “The Championship” or “Defending” championship. That goal is set year in and out & we train to that level. So having “a strong character” is the way to reach that performance level! When you establish a team goal early, everyone works toward it. The Belen Boys were “Runner-Up” at 2015 District & 3rd Place at the Regional Championships and had a Fourth Place Finish at State. It is always a “Team” effort that propels this group. They rely on each other’s support to motivate and qualify! This year in particular.

On this year’s state team we had outstanding swims beginning with the “Winning” 200 Medley Relay (Alejandro Carriazo, Juan Ramirez, Max Garcia del Pozo, Daniel Simpson) also named to the Herald “First Team All County” Junior - Alejandro Carriazo’s (5th Place finish in the 200 Individual Medley & 4th Place 100 Backstroke Finish). Sophomore Aitor Fungairiño’s 2nd Place finish in the 200 Freestyle & 9th Place Finish in the 500 Freestyle. Junior – Juan Ramirez 15th Place Finish in the 100 Breastroke), Max Garcia del Pozo (2nd in the 100 Butterfly), Sophomore Javier Saumell (14th Diving), Our 4th Place 200 Freestyle Relay (Max Garcia del Pozo, Daniel Simpson, Aitor Fungairiño & Juan Ramirez).

“And at the very end,” with a closely contested State Championship within our grasp, we made a mistake. We had disqualification to our 400 Freestyle Relay that cost us a “Runner-Up” spot! We competed as a Team! “We support each other as a Team” We are very proud of that camaraderie!

The varsity track and field team had a great year. They won the district championship for the third consecutive year, with major contributions from everyone in the team. The team also captured first place at the Fr. Ripoll Relays, Ferguson Invitational and Bulldog Invitational. There is no easy road to the top and out of one of the toughest regions in the state the Wolverines had three athletes qualify for the state championship.

Varsity volleyball

Team Recognition: District Champions.

The season started very slowly and finally we had all the players to put a team together. We started with some players that had never played volleyball before, so it was certainly a challenging task to adjust the team. The first tough game was against district foe Sunset which we defeated 3-1. Then we started to believe. Volleyball is a team-oriented sport and players must have peace of mind and great focus during the game.

For the last nine years we've made it to districts; this year we were seeded 4th going into the tournament. We played Sunset who was seeded first and won again. Finally, the long awaited Finals game that would break the record in which we beat Varela 3-2. Since Belen Jesuit volleyball began in Cuba in 1930, we had never won a district championship. Now a volleyball district championship 2016 banner will proudly hang in our gym. Belen Jesuit also set a new record for district titles in a year (9) and volleyball helped make it possible. This year’s water polo boys had big shoes to fill. Coming off a high and winning States in 2015 is no easy task to repeat. The boys stood tall and united, and won back to back State titles, and the third overall in the program.

The 2015-16 year was a wonderful example of determination and drive. One by one, the boys picked off their competitors to end the season with a perfect record. 27-0; all their rivals defeated multiple times. They trained hard despite the lack of actual pool time. They watched countless hours of video, trying to decipher their mistakes, and also learn the games of their competitors. They were determined to bring back the title to Belen, and so it was. The State Title was theirs once more.

Thank you to the nine seniors that made this team so united. You will be missed. To Nicolas Tamborrel, Adrian Hernandez, Alex Boza, Ryan Rodriguez, Alex Alepuz, Gabriel Jimenez, Jason Belisario, Ben Frisbee, and Emilio Cardenal we wish you great success in your next chapter. JV BASKETBALL

This year’s junior varsity basketball team had another outstanding season. The team finished the season with a record of 22-3, playing a tough schedule and having some early season injuries to key players. This group of players all came together for the first time this season. They played relentless pressure defense and fast break oriented offense, which enabled them to outscore their opponents by an average of 19 points per game. Season highlights included impressive wins over Christopher Columbus at the Bank United Center, Doral Academy, Miami Sunset, IMG Academy, Lehigh, Oxbridge Academy, and Naples High School. The junior varsity basketball team also captured the championship at the 2015 North Broward Prep J.V. Tournament by defeating Westminster Christian by the score of 58 to 36.

Marcos Dajer, Teobaldo Rosell, Christian Tinoco, Michael Sueiro, Jonathan Barditch, Lorenzo Luaces, Luis Diaz, and Jose Plasencia were key and instrumental all season in scoring, rebounding, steals, assists, and defense. Nicolas Gonzalez, Jorge Vizcarrondo, Jose Toledo, and Jared Hart also contributed and provided valuable help throughout the season. A special thanks to Daniel Sueiro and Kevin Martin for providing backup help for injured players. All these players responded in a very positive way to all that was asked of them during a very long and demanding season.

This year’s team was very dedicated and worked extremely arduous at all tasks that were required of them. These players accepted and embraced the fact that they had to be disciplined and very unselfish. They demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship and believed in our program’s philosophy that trusting and caring for each other is essential in order to have success in basketball and more importantly in life.

With more than 70% novice athletes conforming our Belen Jesuit freshman crew, our team has achieved one of the top positions among the Florida crews, recently competing in the State Sculling Championship regatta and bringing home the Scholastic State Championship Cup.

The freshman team is currently training for the Florida State Rowing Association sweep championship, the Southeast Regional Championship regatta, competing with crews not only from Florida, but from Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The season will end with the team’s participation in the Scholastic National Championships in Nashport, OH for which our quadruple sculling boat already qualified and will try to improve our last year second place and bring the first gold medal for the team in this freshman event.

The middle school crew team has had a great 2015 fall season with a total of 34 middle school rowers. They medalled in the two regattas they participated during the fall season; Miami Beach and Stetson regatta and had an undefeated 2016 spring season. Our team has maintained their 1st place in the same categories as last year, with a remarkable speed that has made them win first and second place in the same event in almost every regatta in which they have competed: Novice regatta (Orlando), Sarasota Invitational (Sarasota) and locally at the Miami International regatta.

The 2015-16 junior varsity football season was one to remember for the players and coaches. A 5-2 team led by a several returning sophomores, got off to a strong start going 4-0. Then suffered two heartbreaking losses to Christopher Columbus and American Heritage. But they finished the season strong against Westminster Christian winning 21-6. “All the practices were tough, we would try hard in everything we did,” said leading tackler of the team Robert Martinez. “We played tough in every game and would give it our all, day in and day out,” said Ivan Pachon, returning sophomore DB, and integral component of this year’s defense. The varsity coaches are excited about the upcoming season and are thrilled to be working with JV players that are moving up. This team showed great character throughout the season, showing signs that the varsity team will be a force to reckon with the next several years.

This year was a great year for Belen lacrosse. The junior varsity team had a tough season but left everything on the field each day. The team was led by captains Patrick Perez, Alejandro Candela, and Jorge Suarez. On the offensive side of the ball, captain Patrick Perez led the team in goals followed by Jorge Suarez, Eric Mena, Matthew Villalba, Justin Hernandez, and Carlos Diaz. Our defense was led by our goalies Alejandro Candela and Joseph Parlade, and defensemen Marc Novas, Brandon Moran, and Alejandro Toyos-Sitjes. This was a great season for our team, winning 12 games, losing 3 and tying 2. “Balance” is what I call players who are in the junior varsity team. They are halfway though their high school years and working on developing their bodies and minds. Through the highs and lows of this fantastic season, the group matured each game and got better. The potent offense scored 43 goals and the stoic defense only allowed 12 goals. Their effort during the season will propel each of them to fulfill their dream of playing in the varsity team.

Technical players, quick players, strong players are the ideal players needed to keep the dream alive of reaching another state championship.

What a season for JV, we had such a great mixture of boys from 6th grade all the way to 11th. We had an excellent season full of huge successes and (some) failures, that we were able to learn and grow from. The JV program is young and there is plenty of talent on the team, I’m looking forward to the future of our program, and starting a long legacy of great volleyball. The Belen Jesuit freshman basketball team completed their season against as competitive a schedule as it has been in recent years. The team got off to a rough, 1-5 start, as they adapted to their defensive identity. The team then won 7 of its next 8 games, including a thrilling win in the North Broward Prep Tournament championship game against rival Columbus, the first in freshman team history. The team went on to finish with a respectable record of 12-10. The team was led by leading scorer and sharp shooting Daniel Suerio. Manny Becerra with his defense and Joaquin Novoa with his offense led the team on the floor. The inside was fortified by leading rebounder Andre Rodz who stepped up along with the rotation of Nicholas Mullis and charge drawing Stefano Pinto, after the loss of a player. Sebastian Lezcano and RJ Lopez provided versatility at the four position playing both inside and out. Christopher Maza and Nicholas Salvat gave the team toughness and playmaking in crucial moments. Daniel Cantens and Pietro Buzzaneli provided scoring punch and defense off the bench. The team faced a challenging season head on, improved immensely and made history, leaving it with great lessons and memories for their future basketball careers.

The middle school baseball team had a great season winning 23 games and only losing 7. Starting our season off with double headers every Saturday, this group quickly established their dominance. The highlight of the season was winning the four team tournament as the wolverines avenged losses to Somerset and Coral Springs Charter to win tournament. From winning blowouts, to nail biters, they treated each game as if it were the last all while being focused on one goal, winning. Heading into the ACC season this team was ready to show that they can still be a dominant force late in the season. After a mishap against St. Brendan, they didn’t look back and won every game that followed. They later went on to become ACC Tournament Champions.

MS BASKETBALL

The middle school gold basketball team finished the season undefeated with a perfect record of 23-0. The team was on a mission from the start of the season. They pushed each other beyond their limits everyday at practice. The team’s unselfish play, balanced scoring attack and hard-nosed defense allowed them to stifle many of their opponents. The daily grind of practice allowed the team to improve tremendously throughout the season. The highlights of the season include beating conference rival, Epiphany, in the ACC Semi-Finals by a score of 51-24 in front of a packed house. The team rose to the occasion and beat the Cushman School by two points at the American Airlines Arena in their toughest test of the season. The team captured first place at the All Catholic Conference 3A Championships and finished the ACC regular season undefeated. The team concluded their season by winning the ACC 3rd Annual Director’s Cup at the Basketball Tournament of Champions.

Coming off an amazing 2014 season that ended in the state championship, not many gave this group a chance to repeat the feat. With sheer grit and determination this young team became the first program to win the Florida middle school state championship two years in a row. The kids began their training regiment in mid July and some even earlier. Through the heat, humidity and rain they prepared for the coming season with great tenacity. During the season the Wolverine harriers won the Miami-Dade County Championship for the 20th time, the All Catholic Conference for the 23rd time and numerous other meets.

The team was led by Austin San Juan who posted as season best in the 2 miles of 11:20, he was followed by Matthew Bryan (11:53), Adam Magoulas (11:54), John Lee (12:06), Vicente Sanchez (12:20), Eduardo Morasso (12:34), David Jimenez-Pinilla (12:35) and Diego Gomez (12:41). Unlike some sports everyone gets to compete and the secret to our success is directly proportional to how much work each individual puts into the season. Regardless of ability everyone has the same starting line and same finish and as in life how well you run the race depends on you.

The middle school football team had an excellent season finishing with a record of 5-2. The offense was well balanced led by quarterback Dorian Gonzalez the team averaged 105 yards per game rushing and 90 yards passing. Running backs Sean Beaubien and newcomers Alex Blanco and Rafael Bru led the running attack. Quarterback Gonzalez passed for 630 yards for the season.

A veteran offensive line was led by 8th graders Nick Oyarzun and Victor Rivera. On defense the team was led by Beaubien and Nico Gonzalez in the secondary and a strong defensive line led by Ralph de Armas. I would like to thank all the players and parents for all their support during the season.

This was a great year for Belen lacrosse. In our second year of existence we had a record 75 students come out to play for the middle school program. This is how we were able to field two teams for the first time in school history. In regards to the gold team, not enough could be said for the heart and maturity seen from these boys over the season’s entirety. Even though we were still the new kids on the block, it was immediately realized across Miami that Belen Jesuit was the team to beat. We played the game of lacrosse at a level drastically higher than our middle school competition and most of the local varsity programs. We moved the ball with ease, were the most physical team on game day, and played in an intricate offensive and defensive system. Other coaches would make their teams watch our games to show how lacrosse should be played, a testament to our hard work and discipline. We expect great success in the near future for each of the players and long term for the program as a whole as we keep progressing in the right directions.

MS SOCCER

Team Recognition: ACC Champions; ACC Tournament Runner-Up.

The team had a great campaign during the regular season by winning the ACC Championship and earning a spot in the ACC Tournament. Unfortunately at the championship game the Wolverines fell in their final game of the season. Despite the blemish the team is full of promising players who scored 39 goals and allowed only 6. The group has great potential to make a significant contribution to the Belen soccer program.

Although the team did not have a favorable result during the season, they worked hard and played better. Through the growing pains the team had players who showed great promise leaving us optimistic of the future of the program. The team currently continues to work to be the team that will represent the school colors with pride and poise in future campaigns.

This was my first year coaching the middle school Belen swim team, and I have to say it was great. We started off to a rocky start because the boys didn’t know me and weren’t used to a new coach but by the end of the swim season the boys were used to me being their coach and many improved in their swimming abilities. The only downside to this year’s swim season is that the host pool, Tamiami Pool, was closed throughout the entire season due to some repairs. The boys only had one swim meet and that was their only chance to show what they are made of. I’m happy to say that they did, they won their first meet; even though it was just one meet, I believe they’ll have many more next swim season with Tamiami open again. Overall, my first year coaching at Belen was amazing and these kids did great for their first time with me. I believe that by next season they’ll be winning dual meets more often than not.

MS WATER POLO

Team Roster

This year was a rebuilding year for the middle school water polo team. A large number of the players were brand new to water polo. It was very exciting to see the team slowly develop and come together to effectively work as a team. We are especially excited that so many new young players have joined the team and will continue to play next year.

After a very difficult start of the season with a major loss to the more experienced Ransom middle school team of 21-2, the team slowly improved to 15-4, followed by closer games against Gulliver of 15-13 and a very exciting and close final game against Gulliver that ended at 5-4. Players, coaches and parents were excited to see how well the team came together.

Outstanding players who scored goals this season included Luis Mendez who scored at every single game, Orlando Galindez, Andres Castillo, Carlos Caballero, Andres Alfonso and Nelson de Leon. Carlos Caballero showed incredible speed as he repeatedly won the sprints to the ball toss. Our goalie, Kevin Steel, matured tremendously into a strong blocker, limiting the ability of other teams to score against us as the season came to a close. Gabriel Pupo also played a great defensive game this year.

We are confident that next year will be a defining and winning season for middle school, and we are excited to see our graduating eighth graders play in next year’s varsity winning team.

The 6th grade baseball team had much to overcome this season . The Wolverines caught the injury bug in which seven out of the sixteen players had to miss time due to injury, and still managed to have a perfect ACC run (8-0) and end up 15-2 in their 12U Grapeland league. Leading the way was Michael Corral and Matthew Huembes hitting above .450 and staying healthy the whole season . Our pitching was carried by Kevin Castro who had a team tying high with 7 wins . No matter the obstacle it seemed every player contributed in one way or another this season.

6TH GRADE BASKETBALL

The 6th grade basketball team finished the season undefeated with a perfect record of 20-0. Dominance can best describe their season. During the ACC season, the team’s average margin of victory was 34 points. The team’s hard work and competitive attitude everyday at practice allowed them to compete at the highest level. The highlight of their season included 1st place finishes at both the Back 2 Skool Slamfest and the King of Hoops Tournament in Fort Lauderdale. The team will be remembered for their dedication, unselfish play and attention to detail throughout the season.

Although we fell short of winning the All Catholic Conference at the end of the season, the 6th Grade team had a successful year. We came together and worked hard to get better. Their efforts were evident in that every weekend we were consistent with our performances. This group has what it takes to keep the tradition going in the coming years. Some of them even participated in the middle school level. Adam Magoulas was our front runner all season long in a dominating fashion. He was followed by Lucas Morales, Benjamin Pasternac, Alejandro Herrera, Jose Zarraluqi, Enrique Mackinlay, Tomas Duque, Alexander Kuhn, Gabriel Velasquez-Neira and Michael Hernandez. This year’s 6th grade football team was very exciting to watch. Records were set in the passing game as the team would score through a potent aerial attack. The offense was well balanced which kept our opponents constantly guessing. Although our record does not reflect our success, the games were close to the end. Our lack of experience was the difference in those close games.

As the season progressed, the team kept improving and gaining more experience. One thing is for sure, the future of Belen football looks very promising.

6TH GRADE SOCCER

The 6th grade soccer gold went undefeated to claim the division championship. Once again the future of Belen soccer looks promising. These players showed great quality and will continue to develop into amazing players.

The gold team scored 47 goals while allowing 14 displaying great balance and skill. It was a great joy to see these players have so much fun in their first year at Belen during the season.

The 6th grade track and field team was a dominant force throughout the season. The Wolverines were able to field quality in every event. Not only did we have talent on the team but we were also had depth in all our events. Sometimes we even had a hard time deciding where to put our athletes in the meets. It was a joy to watch this team compete and give it their all during the season.

Advice to young athletes: Don’t shy away from being a multi-sport athlete. At a time where it seems athletes are being forced to “choose” one sport at a relatively young age, I would encourage them to pursue as many sports as they are interested in playing. In my experience each sport contributes uniquely to the development of a well-rounded athlete and their performance in one sport will benefit from the others.
