We encourage you to be competitive in the fields because we understand that through sports, you are experiencing selflessness, endurance, determination, and challenge.
With every athletic accomplishment you have acquired many important skills needed to succeed in life. Besides learning the rules of different spo rts, you have cultivated lifelong values of teamwork, leadership, dedication, commitment, sportsmanship, and goal setting. Moreover, you have maintained composure, developed a hard work ethic, balanced busy schedules, and lived a healthy lifestyle in order to reach individual and team goals. After finishing as the best overall boys 6-A Athletic program in Florida for the 2013-2014 academic year, the school is again back on track to repeat its success. Belen currently leads Creekside for the top honor. Only a State Championship in baseball by Creekside could stop the Wolverines from winning the award for the second consecutive year. This also marks the sixth consecutive year in which our school finishes either first or second.
Our varsity water polo team won a State Championship trophy, the second one in the history of the team. Belen has been on a winning streak of State Championships since 2006. The water polo victory secured that streak. We also had individual state champions; In wrestling Julian Ramirez won and made history as the first middle schooler to win in a varsity sport and in swimming the 200 yd. medley relay with Alejandro Carriazo, Bernardo Lima, Maximiliano Garcia del Pozo and Daniel Simpson.
Eight out of our 13 varsity team sports won district championships, and 3 won Regional Championships. Our varsity swimming and diving team finished as State Runner-ups in a competition that went all the way to the final event before it was all decided; The cross country team continues to make its presence felt at the State Level with a third place overall finish. Belen cross-country has the best overall record in the history of the sport for the State Of Florida.
Some historic firsts this year were the varsity crew lightweight 8 that participated in the Henley Regatta in Canada and retuned home with a gold medal. The Canadian Henley is the second most prestigious regatta in the world. A variety of boats have been invited to compete at the Henley Royal Regatta in England in June. The varsity golf team won their first district championship in school history. The varsity lacrosse team defeated Columbus for the first time in their short history and made it to the district final.
Many of our athletes made headlines such as senior water polo player Santiago Nunez was selected as a Miami Herald Scholar Athlete Finalist, Andres Casariego was the first Belen athlete to commit to a university for bowling. Varsity cross-country coach Frankie Ruiz was selected by the FHSAA as coach of the year and also became a National Finalist. Senior Ryan Guso is the favorite to win the Miami Herald Player of the year award for water polo, and water polo coach Jimmy Aguilera is the top candidate as Miami Herald Coach of the Year and State Water Polo Coach of the Year.
A record number of seniors have signed letters of intent to compete at the collegiate level including Frank Battle, Ryan Rodriguez, Andres Casariego, Marcos Perez, Joshua Barditch, Lorenzo Laurita, Daniel Hernandez, Jake Rodriguez, Karol Vargas, Hector Formoso-Murias, Ryan Guso, Santiago Nunez, Matthew Mullin-Garcia, Inigo Sagarduy, Marcello Hernandez, Alex Keenan, Nicholas Keenan, Manuel Sanchez, Alejandro Seda and Alex Vidal. A record number of them have committed to top tier academic universities.
As always, our middle school athletic program continues to be dominant in the division as they finished either at the top or near the top in all of the sports in which we competed. Congratulations to all middle school athletes, especially the ACC All Stars.
The Hernandez field served as home to the newly formed Loyola soccer club, and the lacrosse program which was able to add a middle school team.
The rowing complex due to the generosity of the Cemex Company and the generosity and Leadership of our parents continues to expand and improve, thus enabling our rowing program to get National recognition.
The Gian Zumpano swimming pool project under the leadership of Joey Zumpano, Architect John Medina, Dr. Steve Avallone, builder Mr. Jim Baker, and the Cemex Company is well under way and presently going over the final permitting stages in the building and zoning department.

While the record of 14-12 for the 2015 season is a bit off from the norm, the strength of the schedule was second to none as the Wolverines played 12 teams who have been in the Final Four over the past three years and 6 teams who had won the State Championship within the same three year period.
The team was in close ballgames all year, with 13 games being decided by two runs or less. Their work ethic and dedication was on par with the Belen teams of the past and the prospects for the future are extremely bright. The highlight of the season was a successful trip to Orlando as the team went 3-1 in the Catholic Challenge, defeating defending state champs Bishop Verot and Trinity Catholic as well as host school Bishop Moore, all in come-from-behind victories.
With the return of a talented young crop of players, the future of Belen the baseball program continues to shine very brightly.

The varsity basketball team compiled a 14 – 12 record this past season. The Wolverines won seven of the twelve district games to secure fourth place in the districts and advanced to the playoffs for the third consecutive year. The team was a defensive minded team holding opponents to 44.5 points per game while averaging 50.5 points. Victories against Northwestern, Homestead, and Doral highlighted a successful season. Additionally the team won the Florida Catholic Christmas Tournament in St. Augustine winning three games in a row against tough competition.
The Wolverines were led by Eduardo Cruz with 9.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1 steal per game, Alfredo Consuegra with 9 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1.5 steals per game, and Christian Silva with 9.5 points, 4 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. Other important contributors included Joseph Ordoñez with 5 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 steal per game, Daniel Romeu with 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 steal per game, and Joseph Cirera with 4 points, 5 rebounds, and 1 block per game. Carlos Perez-Heydrich, Alejandro Barnola, Luis Mejer, David Salazar, Daniel Puente, and Gabriel Cabrera supplied a burst of energy and solid play off the bench. All twelve players contributed to the success of this team.

The 2015 Belen bowling team experienced a season of transition, as five new members joined the seven-man squad as well as a new coach in faculty member Mr. Jorge L. Martinez. Despite the team’s inexperience, the invaluable, stabilizing presence of seniors Andres Casariego and Anthony Perez-Pino, who had played all three years of the program’s existence, resulted in a successful campaign for the Wolverines. Throughout the schedule, these two were the anchors that provided leadership to the promising younger players such as sophomores Michael Ahearn and Patricio Lopez and talented eighth grader Jacob Wutzler. The potential for a successful and solid program in the future appears to be in the making.

The 2014-15 season, which will officially end in mid-June after the national championship regattas, has been so far a year of unprecedented speed, commitment, and discipline for our varsity crew. Armed with determined athletes, Belen Jesuit crew took their speed to the end, winning in August the second international medal at the Royal Canadian Henley, held near Toronto.
During the fall, Belen Jesuit crew also won the second medal at the famous Head of the Charles regatta in Boston competing once again with a lightweight crew in a heavyweight event. At this international regatta our senior Hector FormosoMurias won a silver medal competing against 34 boats and our Varsity 8+ finished in 6th place against 85 boats which included participation of crews from Canada and England. Also, for the first time our team won overall points at the Head of the Hooch regatta. In this regatta, the largest regatta in the south, our team added a total of 3 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze.
The spring has been characterized by competition with many fast crews, but our team has recently brought home 13 Scholastic and 5 overall State Championships cups in the FSRA Sculling and Sweep Championship Regatta held in Sarasota, Florida.
The seniors will be rowing in prestigious universities; Alexander Keenan and Nicholas Keenan (UPenn), Manuel Sanchez (Cornell), Hector Formoso-Murias (Georgetown), Alejandro Seda (St. Joseph’s University), Alexander Vidal (Yale).
At the time of this writing, Belen Jesuit crew continues training to bring home gold medals at the SE Regionals Championship and Scholastic National Championships in Camden, NJ. Our team will be working harder than ever to improve last year’s results of 2 gold and 2 silver medals at nationals.

The 2014 season will go down in the program’s history books as a season filled with missed opportunities, injury mishaps and great learning. The team realized early on that it lacked the depths of earlier teams as it was plagued by a higher than usual number of injuries. The team had its sights set on a 5th straight State Title and it started its trek towards that during the summer with its annual trip to North Carolina. Early in the regular season the team ran with success capturing wins at its first 6 major Invitationals. The team was led throughout the season by senior Ryan Rodriguez, which ran the 5th fastest 5K time in Belen history with a 15:23 at the PreState meet in Tallahassee. It was at this meet that the team finished fifth and it recognized that its two greatest challenging teams were both in the northern part of the state and those two teams were Chiles and Leon High Schools. The juniors on the team banded together and provided some much needed inspiration to do what it can to focus on improving in time for the State Meet in November back in Tallahassee at Apalachee Regional Park. The team did close the gap on those two schools but it wasn’t enough to come away with the State title, instead the team had to settle for a third place finish at the Class 3A State Championship meet. It is worth noting that despite finishing third, the bright spot is the team was still the third best team in all of Florida when compared to all classes. Great future lies ahead for this program as it takes the invaluable learning experiences of the 2014 season in 2015 with most of its Top 10 and it will be infused with a great number of incoming freshmen runners hungry to take back the title. Recognition:
The 2014 Belen Jesuit football season was one that put the program back on the map of elite teams in South Florida. After returning to the playoffs the year before as the district runner-up, the 2014 team was able to build on that success by winning the fourth district championship in school history and dominating powerhouse Southridge in the first round of the playoffs 20-7. Although the team was faced with much adversity early on such as crucial injuries and position changes, they were able to bounce back and win key games including one of the largest second half comebacks in school history against Southwest. After going down 17-0 at the half, the Wolverines stormed back to score 24 unanswered points, including 21 in the fourth quarter alone. Although that win put Belen in the driver’s seat to win the district title, the Wolverines fell to Ferguson weeks later on a controversial last second call at the goal line to send the district into a three-way tie. On the following Monday night at Tropical Park, the Wolverines beat Ferguson 7-0 and moved on to beat Southwest 7-3 in the District Championship.

Before the season even started, Head Coach Alan Bellando was faced with much adversity. The team was extremely young with only five seniors and 2014 All-District defenseman Luis Corps was lost all year to an injury. So the team decided to lace up their cleats and put in some extra work. The team was put through a gauntlet with speed training, strength workouts, and skill sessions to get the boys to the next level. Immediately the results showed as the varsity won the Pope John Paul II Pre-season Invitational Classic. Taking down the #10 ranked Pope John Paul H.S. as well as post season contender, Cardinal Mooney.
The team finished the season with a record of 11-7 and made the district playoffs for the third year in a row. The Districts for the first time were held at Belen Jesuit on the beautiful Sanchez Field at De la Cruz Stadium. In the first round of the district championship the Wolverines defeated rival #1 seed Christopher Columbus High School 7-6, giving Columbus their first lost to a Miami team in 5 years and 53 games. This defeat is one of the biggest upsets in Miami lacrosse history. Senior Michel Abud slotted in the winning goal with 4 seconds left on the clock. Unfortunately two days later we lost to Gulliver in the district finals to end the season.
Our varsity staff consisted of defensive coordinator, Christopher Baiocco, assistant coaches Roger Lara and Matt Diaz, and head coach Alan Bellando, who later was given the honors of Miami Herald All-Dade Coach of the Year. The Wolverine defense was stifling, ranking 7th in the state out of 198 teams. We would like to give a special thanks to team manager Elizabeth Dager, for all she did throughout the season for the program.

The varsity soccer team had a very successful season highlighted by their 20 game winning season. The Wolverines captured another district championship, won a quarterfinal game against Pembroke Pine Charter, then defeated rival American Senior High in the regional semifinal. The season ended in a heartbreaking overtime loss to Palm Beach Lakes which derailed the team’s quest for a state championship.
The future of the team looks bright as most of the starters return but we will miss all the seniors especially starters Marcello Hernandez and Jose Maguina. Thank you to all the parents and players for their support throughout the season.

The start of the 2015 varsity tennis season under new coach Mauricio Valderruten had high expectations. The young team had an excellent season in 2014 and came up just short of the district championship. Determined that this was their year, the varsity team started their season strong sweeping schools like Ransom, Westminster, and David Posnack and earning hard fought wins against schools that had edged them during the 2014 season. The team took home the district championship after an 11-1 record during the regular season. Much of the team’s success was due to a strong sophomore class who tasted success the previous season under coach Timothy VanScoy and were hungry for more. Sophomore Daniel Martinez won the individual district tournament and earned himself a spot in the state tournament. Martinez also won doubles district tournament playing alongside 4-year letterman and team captain Alejandro Hasegawa earning the pair a spot in the state doubles tournament as well as the overall no.1 rank in the state heading into the tournament before falling just short in the state semifinals. The team clinched the district championship with key wins by the senior Michael Tefel and the talented underclassman Charlie Grande and Eduardo Scheuren earning the team the championship over district rivals Alonzo Mourning by the narrowest of margins. Also worth noting is the outstanding play during the regular season by the 6th grader Sebastian Velez.

Individual Recognition: District Champions- Ryan Rodriguez 1600 M and 800 M; Matthew Murphy Pole Vault; Jaime Lopez 3200 M. At States Bruno Zayas came in 7th Place in the 1600 M and Jaime Lopez 8th Place in the 3200 M.
The Wolverines had a good season capped by winning the district championship for the second year in a row. Although the team dominated the distance events by sweeping four places in the 1600 M and 3200 M, the team was able to score major points in the hurdles, pole vault and throws events to secure the win over Northwestern and other district rivals. At the state competition Bruno Zayas was Belen’s top finisher. He came in 7th place in the 1600 M. The other medalist was Jaime Lopez in the 3200 M, who came in 8th Place. After leading the water polo team over the course of the last four years, our sacrifice has finally paid off. This year we brought home to Belen the state water polo championship.
The 2014-2015 year was a wonderful example of sacrifice and dedication by the water polo athletes. Their preparation both mentally and physically led them to their success. The boys had a training plan, and they made a commitment as a team to stick to it. Led by their fearless seniors, they maintained a discipline throughout the season that was envied by all other teams. You might ask what made the difference this year? The difference was the unity these boys shared. No one was out for individual glory.
Thank you to Ryan Guso, Santiago Nunez, Cesar Gonzalez, and William Lopez for leading your team and being wonderful examples of hard work and dedication. This victory is dedicated to you, my prized players. You have turned out to be outstanding young men, and friends to us all.

It has been a pleasure to coach the 2015 JV baseball team. The players on the team worked extremely hard to accomplish the team goals that we set for ourselves each week. In the process I believe that each individual player put in the effort needed to be successful at the JV level. Our focus as a team was to be prepared, both mentally and physically, throughout the course of the season to be able to contribute to the group effort. I hope the 2015 JV baseball team continues to set and accomplish individual goals for themselves, in hopes of accomplishing future team goals.
The junior varsity basketball team had another outstanding season. The team finished with an almost perfect record of 21-2, playing a tough schedule and only losing two games by a total of 6 points. This special group of players comprised of one 8th grader, one 9th grader and 13 sophomores, all played together for the first time. They played relentless pressure defense and fast break oriented offense, which enabled them to outscore their opponents by an average of 19 points per game. Season highlights included impressive wins over Doral Academy, Mater Academy, Key West, Jackson, Archbishop McCarthy, and Southwest High School. The Junior Varsity Team also captured the championship in the Belen Jesuit School 2015 New Year’s Junior Varsity Holiday Tournament.
Nicholas Senior, Javier Torres de Navarra, Juan Carlos Carrillo, Alec Rodriguez, Michael Sueiro, Maurice Milton, Gabriel Seda and Pedro Garcia were key and instrumental all season in scoring, leadership, rebounding, steals, assists and defense. Andres Ros, Andres Piñate, Matthew Bravo, Teobaldo Rosell, Richard de Aguiar, Nicolas Gonzalez and Brandon Torricella also contributed and provided valuable help throughout the entire season.
This year’s team was very dedicated and worked extremely arduous at all tasks that were required of them. These players were remarkably disciplined and unselfish. They also demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship and believed in my philosophy; that trust in each other is essential in order to have success in basketball and in life.

The freshman crew junior varsity team is comprised of sixteen freshmen. Most of them have been rowing together for four years, since the 6th grade. Crew is a demanding sport and training is year round. Their coach, Yasser Vasquez, has had the pleasure of coaching them since 8th grade. Yasser is a former Cuban national rowing champion and a Master’s World Champion. He has worked closely with this group of freshmen for the past two years. This year he formed a double (2x), a four (4+) and a quad (4x)along with rowing his freshmen eight (8+) boat. One member of the freshman team even competed on a single (1+). The freshmen raced their first regatta in Orlando, Florida on November 22, 2014 in Head of the Giblet. There they won first place in the men’s novice 4 race, freshman eight (8+) and novice single (1). The freshman eight (8+) and the novice quad (4x) went on to win a gold in the Novice Regatta held on February 14, 2015 in Orlando, FL.
They then competed in the Sarasota Invitational on February 28, 2015 where the freshman eight (8+) again won a Gold medal. Recently, on March 4, 2015 they competed in the Miami International Regatta right here in Key Biscayne. The freshman eight did something unimaginable – they rowed the novice 8 category and won gold, turned back around to the starting line and raced in the freshman eight (8+). They won gold by a second. They competed in the Florida State Sculling Championship in Sarasota on April 11th and April 12, 2015 where they won two gold scholastic championships, in the freshman (4x) and the double (2x). They qualified the freshman quad (4x) to row in the Scholastic National Rowing Championship to be held in New Jersey on May 20, 2015. Two weeks later the freshmen team competed in the Florida State Sweep Championships where they qualified their
for the National Championship as well. The freshman team also received a Bronze in the Men’s freshman four (4+). They are now training for the Southeast Junior District Championships to be held in Lake Lanier, Olympic Venue in Georgia and the Scholastic National Championship where the
qualified two boats, the freshman quad (4x) and freshman (8+).

The Belen Jesuit junior varsity football team reached new heights this year. They accomplished the majority of the goals they set as a team in the spring of 2014. It all started in the summer attending workouts, at nine in the morning. We improved every week. Our team gelled from the beginning. Consistent attendance, throughout the summer, helped us create strong bonds, with each other. The hard work paid off, on the field. Whether during practice or during the game, every single player, both freshmen and sophomores, contributed to the success of the team. We started off our season with a 19-7 victory, over the Gulliver Raiders. As a team, that game enabled us to see our strengths and weaknesses. In the long run, that would help us out, with the rest of the season. The team stayed consistent, earning victories over Key West and rival Monsignor Pace. The team then experienced the single defeat, of the season, suffering a loss to Mater Academy. The loss helped the team mature for a tough second half of the season. The team pulled out a victory, over St. Thomas Aquinas. It was a hard fought game, from the first whistle to the last second. Columbus was next on the schedule. Everyone was excited for that game. This was the second time the Belen Jesuit JV faced Columbus. With a loss, two years back, in their first match-up, the team was determined to get a win. The atmosphere was electrifying, family and friends cheering for both teams. The outcome of the game was a Belen victory. Strong play on all facets offense, defense, and special teams led to a great game for the Wolverines. The JV team ended their season with a win over Palmetto, capping off a great season. The team finished with a record of six wins and one loss. Every game was a stepping-stone for the next one, players getting better and better. The coaching staff was fantastic. They not only taught us how to be successful, but more importantly how to be mature young men. Thank you Coach Mario W. Pino, Coach Eddie Crespo, Coach Fausto Diaz, and all coaches who helped during spring and the summer. From day one, Coach Pino told the team we would rarely, if ever, face an opponent that was going to be smaller than us. But we will beat them with our discipline, intensity and endurance. This successful season was filled with great experiences, both on and off the field. For example, the team traveled to Dolphin Stadium to participate in packing meals, for the homeless. There were times of joy, with jokes and laughter. There were also low times, when the team had to learn from their mistakes. All around it was a great year and one that will never be forgotten.

The team started the season 4-0 and continued to dominate teams under the leadership of their 5 captains. Freshman Alejandro Candela and sophomore Joseph Parlade defended the goal alongside their defense led by Eloy Fernandez and Joseph Cruz. Offensively, sophomore captain Maurice Milton led the team in goals followed closely by captains Nico Smith, Ricky Mayo, and Ignacio LopezCastro.

The freshman basketball team experienced a challenging year finishing with a record of 11-11 against tough competition. The team started the year on a 4 game losing streak but battled back to win a season high 5 in a row. The highlights of the year included a 3rd place finish in the North Broward Prep tournament and a redemption victory over St. Thomas Aquinas. The team was led by leading scorers Marcos Dajer and Johnny Barditch, and the inside-outside big man combination of Christian Tinoco and Joey Plasencia. Robert Fernandez and Luis Diaz kept the team steady as the team’s floor generals. Lorenzo Luaces and Jared Hart provided hustle, defensive tenacity and rebounding. Richard Morales, Nicholas Rodriguez and Jose Toledo contributed adding scoring punch and guard play off the bench. Despite the up and down season, the team faced the challenges head on with good spirits and can take with them a fun, memorable and learning experience in their basketball futures.

The middle school gold baseball team finished with a record of 24-6. The team went undefeated in the ACC posting an 8-0 record. There are nine outstanding eighth graders on the team, one seventh grader and one sixth grader. All eleven of these players have exhibited the talent and skills necessary to play at a high level during their Belen baseball careers. The middle school gold basketball team had an accomplished season. The team finished the season with a record of 25-4 and as ACC Regular Season and 4A Tournament Champions. The team had a great mix of young, new and experienced players. The team was highly balanced on the offensive end and were able to stifle teams with their defensive effort. The team had many highlights throughout the season, but the ACC semi-final game against conference rival Epiphany lived up to the hype. The team was able to escape the game victorious in a hostile environment with their smart play and valiant effort. Always having the target on their backs, the team gave 100% effort in every game and worked extremely hard to accomplish their goal of improving their game at every practice.

The middle school blue basketball team put together a very successful season, finishing 21-5. We were undefeated in league play to win our division’s regular season. Highlights from league play included two come from behind wins against our toughest opponent St. Brendan. The team competed hard every game. The majority of our victories were in excess of 20 points as we simply dominated most teams both offensively and defensively. With 15 players on the squad we were able to play everyone in nearly every game. Their practices were intense and it reflected in their style of play all year. They bonded extremely well and always encouraged each other. The Blue team represented Belen all season with tremendous pride and sportsmanship.

The beauty of athletics is that when you think you have seen everything there is to be seen in sports, it surprises you and gives you something new and exciting. For the first time in the history of the program the team won the FLYRA State Championship. The meet began in 2010 but due to scheduling conflicts we were unable to attend until this year. The kids did not disappoint and bested the nearest opponent by 45 points proving to be the best in the State. It was a great experience that the team will never forget.
The many hours of practice running in the heat, humidity, and rain forged these runners to be the best. They went through the season undefeated. The team captured another County and ACC Championship. Last year’s team was fast but this group was faster than any team ever in the history of the middle school program. The team was led by Rodrigo Madiedo and Henry Souza who posted 2 miles best times of 11:36, they were followed by Sebastian Roa (11:40), Luciano Bettocchi (11:54), Giancarlo Benitez (12:09), Jake Miguez (12:09), Vicente Sanchez (12:39), Luke Miguez (12:45) and Gregory Gallinar (12:53). The team had great depth and it showed during the season as someone always stepped up when needed to perform. Thank you to all the parents for always being there for the kids and the program.

The middle school football team finished its season with a 3-5 record. In the opener the team shutout Westminster Christian 14-0. The next two games were tough losses to the two division winners Calvary and Mater. After a great home win against American Heritage, the team lost a high scoring game to University 56-34. The Wolverines went 1-2 the rest of the season with a win against Doral and losses to Gulliver and Somerset in the Bowl game. The team was never shutout the entire season and averaged 20 points a game. Quarterback Aramis Castaño led a well balanced offense that averaged 125 yards rushing and 65 yards passing per game. Leading receivers were Nathaniel Payne and Michael Lopez . Don Chaney led the team in all purpose yards with 602 yards rushing and 203 yards in returns. Fullbacks Andy Garcia and Nicholas Quintero as well as RB Sean Beaubien were also big contributors to the running attack. Defensively, the team was led by all purpose player Rafael Ruiz and leading tackler Mario Osorio. Daniel Esteban and Andy Garcia provided solid linebacker play and Ethan Ramirez and Michael Lopez were outstanding in the secondary. Good luck to all the players in their future

The 2015 inaugural season was an amazing year for Belen lacrosse. With a competitive varsity and junior varsity team pushing to be the top teams in Miami, it was a necessity for the middle school to field a team in order to acclimate more kids into the sport in preparation to be leaders in the region for years to come. As a first year program, it was crucial for the team to be led by an experienced staff. A 2013 & 2014 varsity coach, Joseph Bellando, was brought down to truly teach the students the finer details of the game, doing so by implementing a system that will grant the players an understanding of the game far beyond that of their competition. Assistant coach Gilbert Serein is a Belen Jesuit alumnus that played at the University of Miami.
The MS team started the season well, jumping out to a 2-1 record with wins over Riviera Prep and Keys Panthers. Players were eager to get on the field and chemistry was abundant throughout the roster. Unfortunately for the Wolverines, they came up short by a goal in five different contests. The heart and fight shown was truly inspiring and the boys have earned much respect from the programs we faced. The team ended the season with a 3-8 record but we accomplished our goal of making a name for ourselves.
The growth of both mental and skill maturity was exponential. The players acted like sponges every time they were on the field and soaked up any kind of lesson that was being given. They love playing the game and it shows, as they are the first of all players on the field and the last to leave. Many of the players will contribute to the junior varsity team as 9th graders and from there it will only be a matter of time before they are sliding into a Blue and Gold Jersey as a representative of the varsity team. The middle school tennis team showed a lot of promise under new head coach Mauricio Valderruten. They had some close matches with Ransom, Gulliver, and North Broward Prep. Rodrigo Nieto and Diego Belfort both competed for the no.1 seed on the team and both show tremendous skill and maturity on the court. Dominic Chiappone had the best record on the team and served as an anchor in both singles and doubles play.

The 2015 incarnation of the Belen Jesuit middle school track team was truly just that, a team. In every meet the team competed in, their success can be attributed to athletes from every event. This team did not rely on the efforts of the long distance runners or the throws of the shot putters. Instead this team won its meets by getting points from every event and relying on the hard work and determination from every athlete. This proved to be the case at the State Meet where Belen was represented in the Hurdles, High Jump, Triple Jump, Shot Put, Discus, 400, 800, 1500, and 3000. It was a fun year and we wish all the 8th graders the best as they make the jump to the High School level.

The 6th grade basketball team had a memorable season. The team finished the season with an undefeated record of 15-0. The team was extremely talented, but their drive to succeed was paramount. Practice was the key to their success. The team was pushed beyond their limits and always responded to the challenge. The team’s unselfish play, attention to detail on the offensive end and hard-nosed defensive effort allowed them to complete the perfect season as ACC champions. Most importantly, every player improved their skills throughout the season. The team’s season finale against undefeated St. Thomas showcased their hard work, dedication and competitive spirit throughout the season.

The Wolverines had a good season with a talented core of runners that show promise for years to come. Although the team’s sole first place finish this season was at the Holy Rosary Invitational, the runners were competitive in every race. With more time in training they will surely do better in the years to come. In the final meet of the season the team finished in 3rd place at the All Catholic Conference Championship. Making the All Conference team were Austin San Juan who came in 2nd place at the meet and Diego Gomez who finished in 8th place. The final top nine were made up of Sebastian Castillo, Christian Fernandez, Carlos Barquin, Daniel Oliu, Robert Ochoa, Nicolas Marquez and Julian DeCollibus.

We started the year slowly at 0-2. Most of the kids did not play football before. Despite the lack of experience, we got better each week. The team developed good habits, began to execute better, and we were not making mistakes. Once we got our first win against University, I knew this team was going to turn it around. With hard work and dedication, we finished the season winning 3 out of 4. The most exciting moment was a thrilling double overtime win against Gulliver. A team that we were 0-3 against. The momentum continued until the following week as we won our bowl game against Fort Lauderdale Pine Crest. There is no doubt that if we had a chance to play our first two opponents that we would come out on top.
Not far behind the blue team, the gold team played outstanding soccer all season. The group worked hard and were dedicated all season long to improving their skills. Together with the other team they will prove to be valuable assets to the program for years to come. Congratulations Wolverines, let’s keep the ball rolling.

The season’s first meet ended in a close 2nd place finish and set the tone for the rest of the season, which made it clear, that if this team was willing to work hard in practice, the victories will come. They did just that, and in the year’s most important meet, the ACC Championship, these young men pulled through and won the meet by 1 point.
