We would like to congratulate you on your achievements in all your athletic events this year. At Belen Jesuit we strive to give you the best resources available. With every athletic accomplishment you have acquired many important skills needed to succeed in life. Besides learning the rules of different spo rts, you have cultivated lifelong values of teamwork, leadership, dedication, commitment, sportsmanship, and goal setti ng. Moreover, you have maintained composure, developed a hard work ethic, balanced busy schedules, and lived a healthy lifestyle in order to reach individual and team goals. Belen Jesuit Preparatory School

The Belen Jesuit Athletic program continues to rank among the best overall male athletic programs for class 6A in Florida. Our school has placed among the top 2 programs during each of the past 5 years. The 2013-2014 season got off to a blistering start. The crew team made a historic appearance in the most prestigious regatta in the Western Hemisphere: the Royal Canadian Henley. Not only did they compete, but they came home with a medal! Not to be outdone, the varsity cross country team captured yet another State Championship, their fourth in a row and ended up as the best cross country program in the state, regardless of classification for the third consecutive year. Since its foundation in 1970, this program has averaged a top 3 finish at the state level. The swimming team was not left behind as they too captured another State Championship title; their 7th in the past 8 years. Cross country head coach Frankie Ruiz was a national finalist for coach of the year and was selected as Florida coach of the year for the second consecutive year by the Florida Athletic Coaches Association (FACA). Coach Kirk Peppas was also selected as coach of the year by the FACA for the second consecutive year. The golf team completed an outstanding season and was ranked one of the best 4 programs in all of Miami-Dade County. The Dean of Football Coaches in Miami-Dade County Richard Stuart earned his 200th career victory when the football team defeated Miami Sunset 9-7.

The winter season was highlighted by 7th grade student Julian Ramirez becoming the youngest wrestler ever from Belen to win a varsity medal in State Competition when he finished in 3rd place. The varsity soccer team had an outstanding season as they dominated their district opponents before suffering a heartbreaking loss in the Region semifinal game; a game that went down to more than 10 penalty kicks before it was finally decided. Coach Tanger Mendonça secured his 100th career win with a 3-0 win over Mater Academy. The basketball team gave Coach Jose E. Roca his 300th career win when they defeated rival Columbus in front of an estimated crowd of 5,000 at the Bank United Center in the University Miami.

The spring season witnessed our youngest sport, lacrosse, record their first winning season and qualified to the district playoffs for the first time in their history. Our crew team established itself as the best over all male high school program in Florida. The water polo team won its 6th consecutive district title and made it to the state tournament. Our track team won the district championship and finished 3rd in the region. Junior Ryan Rodriguez set a new school record in the 1600 M race and was a regional winner in the 1600M and 3200M . The #1 doubles tennis team composed of Alejandro Hasegawa and Daniel Martinez made it all the way to the state tournament. The volleyball team won an exciting comeback win against Columbus in the district semifinal game. The varsity baseball team finished with an outstanding season before the bats cooled off in district play. The team suffered a disappointing loss in the regional quarterfinals to a very good Miami Springs team.

Our varsity program had 12 out of 15 teams finish either 1st or 2nd in their respective districts. The varsity football team captured the top academic spot in the FHSAA Academic Honor roll; 14 of our 15 varsity teams made the FHSAA State Academic Honor Roll. The list is made up by the average of the team member’s GPA and a minimun 3.0 team average is required for submission.

Our middle school program continued its dominance in ACC play as they won ACC Championships in volleyball, cross country, basketball, soccer and baseball.

New Project:

The new Hernandez Field was created. It includes an artificial practice field for soccer and lacrosse, the Peter and Maria Montadas path with 400 meters of jogging trail and a new shot put and discus area. The entire area has 175,000 additional square feet. This project became a reality thanks to the great generosity of the Hernandez family; Rodolfo, Mercy, Rudy ’93, Danny ’97 and Greg ’04; Mr. Eugenio “Chino” Cosculluela, the Arazoza brothers, Mr. Eric Santa-Cruz, Mr. David Bou, Mr. Carlos Penin, the law offices of Zumpano, Patricios, & Winker, A-Turf and the school administration. This added facility has alleviated the problem we had with lack of space for practices and games.

Baseball building: Thanks to the leadership of architect Mr. Luis Naya, builder Mr. Roberto Curbelo, Mr. Albert Mauri, Mr. Ruiz-Sierra and Mr. Vazquez, the improvements to the baseball complex are becoming a reality.

Crew Complex: Thanks to the generosity and the leadership of our parents, the crew team Board of Directors, Cemex Company and friends of the program, our crew facility is slowly developing into one of the best training facilities in Florida. These individuals have been able to add a heavy duty pickup truck, extra rowing shells, new oars, added equipment, expanded weight room facilities, more cover space, and a revamped launching dock.

Gian Zumpano swimming pool: Mr. Johnny Medina has been retained as the pool architect and the plans to build the pool are well on the way. The law offices of Zumpano, Patricios and Winker are once again deeply involved in making sure that this project becomes a reality. Dr. Steve Avallone and Mr. Jim Baker of Baker Construction are deeply committed to the success of this project.

The Varsity Baseball team had a very successful and exciting 2014 season. The team finished with a record of 20-8 and in first place in the district with an 11-1 district record during the regular season. The Wolverines were known for their come-from-behind heroics as the team earned 7 of their wins after trailing at some point in the game. Walk-off wins against district rivals TERRA and Mater highlighted a year of dramatic victories. The team also earned a few impressive road victories at Killian, Cardinal Gibbons, and Estero and took down traditional rivals LaSalle, Monsignor Pace, and St. Brendan’s.

Throughout the year the group truly embraced the team concept, which allowed for heroics from players off the bench and out of the bullpen all season long.

Sophomore sensation Pablo Arevalo broke the school record for victories in a season with 10, as the team hit the 20-win mark for the third year in a row in what many outsiders considered to be a “re-building” year for Belen. The achievements of the group are a testimony to both their individual and team character and work-ethic. With 16 returning players in 2015, the future of Belen Baseball continues to look brighter and brighter by the day.

Recognition:

The Varsity Basketball team continued with its winning tradition compiling a 14 – 12 record this past season. The Wolverines won half of the district games to secure a spot in the playoffs. Victories against Ft. Myers, Homestead, and Doral highlighted a successful season. The biggest victory of the season occurred January 17 against Columbus at the Bank United Center. The Wolverines defeated Columbus by the score of 62 to 55 securing Coach Jose E. Roca’s 300th varsity win and even the series at 7 games each.

The Wolverines were led by Nicolas Iparraguirre with 10 points, 8.5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals per game, Matthew Fernandez with 10 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game, and Eduardo Cruz with 8.5 points, 2 assists, and 2 steals per game. Other important contributors included Jonathan Herrera with 5 points and 2 rebounds per game, Andres Perez with 4.5 points, 1.5 assists, and 2.5 rebounds per game, Joseph Cirera with 4.5 points, 4 rebounds and 1 block per game, and Johnny Medina with 4 points, 2.5 assists, and 4 rebounds per game. Joseph Ordoñez and Frank Battle supplied a burst of energy and solid play off the bench, while Nicholas Cambo, Gabriel Nuñez, and Carlos Perez-Heydrich always contributed to the team with a positive attitude and strong work ethic.

This being the 2nd year of bowling’s existence at Belen, the team made huge strides. This year’s team had a record of 4-6, came in 9th place in the Youth Fair Invitational, and 8th in the District Tournament. Led by Anthony Perez-Pino and Andres Casariego the team improved on last year’s inaugural season. Newcomers, Thomas Ahearn, Anthony Calvo, Anthony DeFurio, Lorenzo Guio, Chris Martin and Steven Solis have helped set the path and, with the continued interest from students to participate, the foundation is set for the future of the bowling team.

The 2013-14 season, which will officially end in mid-June after the national championship regattas, has been so far a year of unprecedented speed, commitment, and discipline for our Varsity crew. Armed with determined athletes, Belen Jesuit Crew took their speed to the end, winning in August the first international medal at the Royal Canadian Henley, held near Toronto, in the Under-17 category where our lightweight boys competed against heavyweight athletes.

During the fall, Belen Jesuit Crew also won the first medal at the famous Head of the Charles regatta in Boston competing once again with a lightweight crew in a heavyweight event. At this international regatta our sophomores Jose Armengol and Hector Formoso-Murias won a bronze medal competing against 38 boats which included participation of crews from Canada and Russia. Also, for the first time our team won a gold medal at the Head of the Hooch regatta, in the Varsity 8+ category. At this regatta, the largest regatta in the south, our team added a total of 4 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze.

The spring has been characterized by competition with many fast crews, but our team has recently brought home 6 Scholastic State Championship cups in the FSRA Sculling Championship Regatta held in Sarasota, Florida.

The Varsity team has a record to date of 52 medals won: 24 gold, 16 silver and 12 bronze.

The crew varsity head coxswain Miguel Zaldivar will be training and competing next season with the University of Pennsylvania Lightweight Freshman team. Miguelito “Mouse” will join 2 of his former Belen teammates as a member of UPenn crew.

At the time of this writing, Belen Jesuit Crew continues training to take home a gold medal at the Scholastic National Championships in Princeton, New Jersey, and to win the first medal at the US Rowing Youth National Championships in Sacramento, CA. Our team will be working harder than ever to top last year’s results of 2 silver medals at Nationals, where our Varsity Lightweight 8+ finished second by only 0.284 from first place.

Every season has its defining moments and the 2013 XC season had more than the usual making this a unique and meaningful team. The program continues to be a target to the rest of the state as it racks up victories. As they say that proverbial target on the backs of our uniforms only gets larger and larger. The summer training out in Eugene, Oregon started with a number of challenges with some injuries and other team-related obstacles resulting in a smaller squad than what has been during the last few years. What was to be one of the best and deepest teams on paper for the start of the 2013 season never really panned out, but that is exactly what would make the outcome of the season all the more satisfying and exciting. Running on the program’s mantra of “ONE TEAM” the well-bonded pack pulled itself through a tumultuous competitive regular season managing to strike enough respect and fear to keep opposing teams across the State of Florida from thinking Belen was anything less than a team striving to be the best for a 4th straight year. Late in the season the team was infused with the youthful talent of 8th grader Joshua Collins who closed the season off as the 5th man on the team. The addition to the team helped spark the aggressive closing energy of the front four led by junior Ryan Rodriguez, followed closely by seniors Fabian Tomas, Michael Magoulas and Alexander Isaac. This team ran 3 guys under 16 at the State Meet held at Apalachee Park in Tallahassee and scored 86 points to win over 3A Chiles and Fort Walton Beach. The team time average was the fastest of all classes, making the 2013 Belen XC team the best amongst the over 400 schools that compete in the sport in Florida. The program is also proud to announce that Andy Fernandez and Fabian Tomas will move on to compete at the collegiate level, attending American University and the University of Portland (OR) respectively, adding to the great number of Belen graduates who have chosen to extend their running careers.

After a one-year absence the Varsity Football team returned to the regional playoffs during the 2013 season, and the team finished with a seven win and four loss record. The team started off 1-2 but then reeled off six straight wins before losing to Killian in the first round of the regional playoffs. The many highlights included Jorge Powell’s school record 54 yard FG. Jimmy Garcia’s grinding work at FB and LB’er. The outstanding blocking of OL men Jack Flood and Jonathan Schultz, and lastly maturation of a very young defense right before our eyes. The 2013 football team was a very close and united bunch and as a result many strong friendships and memories were made during the process. Our college bound players are Jack Flood-Coastal Carolina, Jorge Powell-University of Florida, Jonathan Schultz-Davidson University, John Medina-Trinity College, Jorge PolaCatholic University, Daniel Neptune and Jimmy Garcia-FIU.

This 2014 season was a successful one for the Varsity Lacrosse program. The team was led by its new Head Coach Alan Bellando. In his first year in the driver’s seat, the team had its best season finish in history, going 11-6 during the year. The team finished 2nd in the Pre-season Pope John Paul II Classic tournament. They played their first game on home turf and won convincingly against Archbishop McCarthy. They also made the district playoff but lost to Columbus in the first game. We had the best district season to date. We went all season without having lost a district game. It was very important because it gave us the group mentality, confidence, and concentration to achieve our desired goals. The two captains Reynaldo Madiedo and Carlos Acevedo provided strong leadership inside and outside the pitch. They kept an excellent environment of hard work, friendship, respect and dedication to the training which translated to wins in the season. We had a young team which gives us an optimistic view of the future for the soccer program. We had great performances by 8th and 9th graders on the team; they played great soccer with good technical ability and hustle. Our style of play was to try to protect the ball trying to find a balanced attack down the lines, always being on the offensive. Our offense was able to play so well because of our outstanding defense. The numbers speak for themselves: we only allowed 7 goals all season while scoring 62 goals. The Belen soccer program has kept and will keep developing for years to come to be the best that we can be while fostering friendship among the players. The Varsity Tennis team entered the 2014 season in a state of change. With the loss of seven year anchor Juan Lorido to graduation last year and five graduating seniors this year, the team struggled against prime competition to find its direction. While losses seemed high, about four were close calls, including the regional final against Mourning. Stepping up to #1 was junior Alejandro Hasegawa, who started the year with an impressive five match win streak and ended the year 8-3. Also rising was freshman Danny Martinez, going from #10 to #2 singles in the course of the year and winning #2 doubles at districts with Hasegawa. Other standouts included the senior duo of Christian Perez and Patrick Siu, who combined for 8 wins in the regular season. Saying goodbye this year are longtime players Santiago Vidal, Genaro Poulat and Mark Lagunas, in addition to Perez and Siu. No group has defined the Magis better in your years of devotion to this team. Thank you, seniors!

After starting the season with a 2nd place finish at the Fr. Ripoll S.J. Relays, the Wolverines bounced back to win the Ferguson and Martin County Invites. The team’s efforts led to their biggest win of the season at the District meet over rival Northwestern. We swept the top four spots in the Pole Vault, 1600 M and 3200 M to outscore the Bulls by 30 points. We are very proud of these kids for their commitment and dedication; they always had the team’s needs ahead of their own. We wish all the seniors Godspeed and keep on running faster, jumping higher and throwing farther.

Varsity volleyball

We started the season with some difficulties but we slowly began improving. The purpose was made clear that we had to do what was best for the kids and for the school, although it didn’t seem that way at first. After things calmed down, we started working hard and even with spring break in the middle of the district season, we started winning. The victories propelled us for the first time in a while to be at the District tournament which only has the top four teams from the season. In our first game in the district tournament we lost 2 very close sets to Columbus. When it seemed we were going to lose again, we changed our strategy. The move worked and we turned the game around easily winning the third set . In the 4th set we won 28 – 26 and it was the most beautiful set of my 30 years in coaching. We won the last set 15 -13 and the match 3-2 thus advancing to the finals. Unfortunately we lost the final and finished in 2nd place, which was our best finish in recent Belen volleyball history. Our future is wide open with the new generation that is coming up. We are paving the way for success.

Belen Jesuit Water Polo had an amazing year. The team won 17 out of 19 season games. The team won the District title, and moved passed the regional opponent to play at the State Quarterfinals. With a loss at the quarterfinals, Belen water polo ended the season with a 20-3 record.

The Water Polo team was like the little train that could. Expected to have a mediocre season due to the loss of seven graduating seniors in 2013, the boys pulled together and knocked off opponents one game at a time. Led by Head Coach Jimmy Aguilera, and Assistant Coach Lazaro Fernandez, the team beat district rivals, Coral Gables, Southwest, and Ransom Everglades. We also defeated St. Thomas and Gulliver in season games. A season highlight, was coming home once again with the St. Andrews tournament trophy.

Juniors Santiago Nuñez, and Ryan Guso led the team in scoring in 2014. Highlighted players for the season are Adrian Alepuz, Max Goldberg, Cesar Gonzalez, Nico Tamborrel, Adrian Hernandez and Federico Tamborrel. Newcomer Pablo Kurzan also contributed significantly to the team, as well as goalie Erick Labrador. The entire team performed admirably, and did what was necessary to get the job done.

The team loses three seniors this year: Adrian Alepuz, Max Goldberg, and Eddie Tamborrel, who graduate in 2014. We are so proud of our seniors, and wish them well in the next phase of their education.

This was one of the youngest groups to wrestle at the varsity level in school history. They showed a lot of promise in years to come. The team was led by 7th grader Julian Ramirez who finished 3rd at States and Regionals and was a district champion. Being that he is only in 7th grade, he made school and county history by being one of the youngest wrestlers to place so high in a State competition. Ariel Jimenez came out of nowhere and proved he could go against some of the best and belonged there; he won the regional and district titles. The whole team displayed a lot of courage and heart throughout the season and this will payoff as we get better and wiser. I would like to make a special mention and show our gratitude to our lone senior Paul Martinez, who unfortunately due to an illness was unable to participate in district competition. His example of commitment and dedication will surely be missed.

The JV Baseball squad had a very impressive season this year. The team finished with a record of 169-1 playing some tough competition. Over the course of the season the players developed a great deal and the future of the program looks to be in great shape. Congratulations to the team on all your hard work and continued success.

JV BASKETBALL

The Junior Varsity Basketball Team had an outstanding season. The team finished with an almost perfect record of 23-1, playing a tough schedule and only losing one game by 3 points. This special group of players comprised of four freshmen and ten sophomores, all played together for the first time. They played relentless pressure defense and fast break oriented offense, which enabled them to outscore their opponents by an average of 18 points per game. Season highlights included impressive wins over Columbus, Mater Academy, Northwestern, Homestead, Miami Jackson, Ferguson, Florida Christian and Doral Academy.

Daniel Romeu, Alfredo Consuegra, Luis Mejer, Christian Silva, Alejandro Barnola and Juan Carlos Carrillo were key and instrumental all season in scoring, rebounding, steals, assists and defense. David Salazar, Steven Marin, Gabriel Cabrera, Daniel Puente, Nicholas Senior, Nicolas Roca and John Powell also provided valuable help throughout the season. Giancarlo Pinto, who was injured most of the season, came back strong towards the end and provided great energy and play.

This year’s team was very dedicated and worked extremely arduous at all tasks required of them. These players were remarkably disciplined and unselfish. They also demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship and believed in our philosophy that trust is essential in order to have success.

With more than 70% novice athletes comprising our Belen Jesuit Freshman Crew, our team has achieved a top seven position among the Florida crews by recently competing in the State Sculling Championship regatta and bringing home the Scholastic State Championship Cup.

The Freshman team is currently training for the Southeast Regional Championship regatta, competing with crews not only from Florida, but from Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The season will end with the team’s participation in the Scholastic National Championships, in Princeton, NJ, for which our quadruple sculling boat has already qualified.

The Middle School Crew team had an undefeated 2013-2014 season. Our team has maintained their 1st place in the same categories as last year, with a remarkable speed that has made them win every race for more than 10 second in every regatta they have competed: Head of the Indian Creek (Miami Beach), Head of the Giblet (Orlando), Novice regatta (Orlando), and locally at the Miami International regatta.

After moving up more than a dozen sophomores to the varsity this year’s young JV team was still able to finish with a record of four wins and two loses. Two of their wins coming against long time rivals Gulliver and Msgr. Pace, winning the Msgr. Pace game at Msgr. Pace by a nail biting one point margin. The team was filled with student athletes that worked hard not only on the field, but off the field as well. They started together back in spring where they practiced for a month and played a quarter against Archbishop McCarthy. Down by seven, the young Belen squad managed to drive down the field, manhandling its much larger opponent, scoring and then going for the win with a two point conversion. The team took that momentum into summer where they met four times a week at nine in the morning to lift weights and condition. If there is one word to describe this year’s team is dedication. These boys have a love for the game and a willingness to work hard to become the best they can be on and off the field. If they continue their hard work and dedication they will achieve many great things together. Next season we expect continuing contributions from our sophomores on the varsity and from the returning freshmen; we expect them to finish what they started last season.

JV GOLF

Head Coach: Gerardo Portela (8th Year)

Team Record: 6-0

The JV Golf Team had an unblemished season as it established a record of 6 wins and 0 losses. The only thing that got in our way was the rain and the refusal of certain teams to reschedule our matches after suffering definitive losses in their initial match (Columbus and Archbishop McCarthy). The team was led by the consistent play of juniors Andrew Powell and Walter Tomasino and sophomores Joel Yanez and Victor Alvarez. We also received contributions from Leo Herrera and Andrew Cecol who also performed for Mario Avello’s varsity squad.

Andrew Powell was our number 1 player leading the team with 40.4 stroke average. The best round was provided by 6th grader Leo Herrera shooting a 37 against Columbus on Doral’s White Course. With the likelihood of this group moving up to varsity next year to join the four returning members of this year’s varsity team, the future really looks promising for Belen Jesuit golf.

The JV Lacrosse team had the most exciting season since our inaugural season four years ago. We did not know where the season would go since we sent 13 returning sophomores to varsity. We started our season with a 4-0 record with a historic first time victory against Ransom Everglades. Our final record was 8-5. This group of young players responded extremely well to a challenging season. We had seven 8th graders on this team that contributed to the team’s success. Three of the 8th graders were on the starting line-up. The future of the program looks promising because of the great turnout of players for our JV program. A great passion for the sport and representing Belen created what was undoubtedly the best season we ever had at this level.

First off I want to say I had an amazing experience with these freshman kids this year. This was my first experience being a head coach and this exceptional group of kids made my introduction to coaching as enjoyable as it could have possibly been. When I think of attributes that make up great teams I think of talent, leadership, hard work, and positive attitudes. My goal as a coach is not only to win but more importantly to make sure the players improve in each of these areas. These players were so incredibly coachable they made my job extremely easy. I truly believe each individual on this team made enormous improvements as the season progressed. Each individual became a better baseball player by the end of the year than when the year began and that made the season a tremendous success.

The situation with practice space and different coaches helping out was not always ideal for this team. They had to adapt to a situation that was a little out of the norm. This put more responsibility on the shoulders of each individual to be self sufficient during practices and accountable for their own improvement. But with this group I think that situation was a blessing in disguise. They took advantage of all the great facilities at Belen to work together and help each other get better. In doing so I witnessed an already tight knit group continue to bond further as a team. I think that is what stands out most to me about this group. I never had to teach them how to be a team. From day one coaching them, it was evident they all worked as one unit. They all pulled for each other and cared about each other. Most importantly they all had fun playing the game. I feel truly blessed and thankful I had the opportunity to coach these young men. Throughout the course of the year I’ve felt a connection with each individual. I look forward to seeing their progress in the future.

The 2013-2014 Freshman Basketball team exceeded expectations finishing the season with a record of 19-4. The team this year played a freshman record 23 games, highlighted by going 3-0 on their Orlando road trip, a 3rd place finish in the North Broward Prep Tournament, sweeping rival Gulliver Prep, an airboat ride and a monumental victory at rival Columbus. The team’s aggressive defense, balanced offensive attack and superior depth propelled them to an 18 point average margin of victory throughout their 19 victories. Resilience and redemption characterized this team as it avenged 3 of its 4 losses. The team was led by heady point guard Javier Torres de Navarra who along with Maurice Milton led the team in scoring, averaging 10 points per game. Matthew Bravo and Michael Sueiro also provided scoring, rebounding and versatility. Big men Gabriel Seda, Andres Piñate, and Nicholas Gonzalez were the anchors of the defense, which provided rebounding and timely buckets. Frankie Menendez and Pedro Garcia brought an invaluable spark off the bench. TJ Rosell, Brandon Torricella and Richard De Aguiar also contributed with perimeter shooting and steady guard play off the bench. The team developed camaraderie and lasting memories through its ability to work hard, care for each other both on and off the court, and most importantly have fun. The future of Belen basketball is bright. We would like to thank all the coaches, parents and students for all their support throughout the season.

MS BASEBALL

The Wolverines Gold Baseball Team is a reflection of what the future has in store for Belen. This group was a great example of team work and determination in and out of the baseball field. The energy these players brought to the field every day contributed to the success of our season in which we won 18 out of 23 games.

After suffering injuries to our starting pitchers and some key players at the begining of the season, the team bounced back with great determination and performed admirably. This was seen in our semifinal game of the Borward Conference Tournament where it took 9 innings against Somerset to pull a 7 to 4 win. In the championship game we kept fighting and forced another 9 inning game. The game became a slugfest in which we tied the game at 15 in the 8th inning on a 2-out homer by Andrew Hernandez. Unfortunately, we gave up two runs in the 9th and lost 17 to 15. No matter the score of the game our team felt like winners. Because of this valuable experience we will become better baseball players and men for others.

The Middle School Blue Baseball team consisted of seven 8th grade players and seven 7th graders. The 8th graders provided outstanding leadership for the team and the 7th graders gained valuable experience for next year. The team captains were Alessandro Billau, Eloy Fernandez, Emilio Mascaro and Jason Rodriguez. After the first five games of the season the team found itself with a 2-3 record playing in the Broward and Private School league. However, the team regrouped and went undefeated in ACC conference play winning the Southern division title. Defensively the team was strong up the middle with Alessandro Billau and Robert Curbelo at catcher and Henry Gonzalez, Mario Fernandez and Sebastian Prieto in the infield. Also, Eloy Fernandez and Jason Rodriguez played outstanding in the outfield. Offensively the team had an overall batting average of .385. Outstanding hitters included Billau, Sean Prieto, and Nicholas Quintero. Lastly the pitching staff was led by Eloy Fernandez with a 4-2 record, Mario Fernandez, and Eric Labrador.

MS BASKETBALL

The Middle School Gold Basketball team had an accomplished season. The team finished the season 28-1, ACC regular season and Tournament Champions and defeated their conference rivals, Epiphany and Lourdes, on three different occasions. The team was extremely balanced. Eleven different players led the team in scoring throughout the season. Starting point guard and captain Robert Fernandez ran the offense for the Wolverines and consistently performed on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court. Johnny Barditch, Alec Rodriguez and Christian Tinoco were dominant, offensive threats while Joey Plasencia and Ricky Mayo were a force inside for the Wolverines. Luis Diaz, who was always assigned with the task of guarding the opposing team’s best player, was the difference maker in some of the most important games of the season. The team’s competitive attitude and balanced attack allowed them to complete an unforgettable season.

This year’s Middle School Basketball Blue Team had an excellent season, finishing with a record of 18-10. The team played very tough competition even though they were riddled by many injuries throughout the season. However, they stayed focused and determined and defeated many quality opponents with their great speed and defensive intensity. Despite the many injuries, the players knew it would take hard work, discipline, and chemistry in order to succeed in their long 28game season. Playing together for the first time, it did not take very long for these players to embrace these qualities. This was possible with the great character and positive attitude each player on the team took on as the season progressed. This group played many games against teams that were much taller; however, the Blue team’s speed, toughness, and great ball movement were too much for these big teams to handle. This group had impressive wins over Florida Christian, American Heritage, Northwest Christian, St. Mary’s, and Gulliver.

Keeping with the tradition of excellence the Wolverines were true to form and went the season undefeated. This doesn’t happen by mere luck. Their hard work and determination in practices makes them the best that they can be, and it showed on the course. These runners battle heat and humidity everyday to get better. Practicing in those conditions forges the toughness needed to race.

These Wolverines posted some of the fastest times in middle school history. This group won the County championship for an unprecedented 18th time and the prestigious Flrunners. com Invitational that brings some of the best runners from around the state.

The team was led by Joshua Collins (10:38) for most of the season until he got called up to run with the big boys in varsity on their quest for a 4th consecutive state championship. The team had great balance and depth between the 7th and 8th graders that proved to be the formula for success. After Joshua’s departure Rodrigo Madiedo (11:18) and Chris Garcia (11:26) stepped up to the plate and performed admirably at the number spot. They were followed by Sebastian Roa (11:40), Luciano Bettocchi (11:59), Alex Corzo (11:38), Jake Miguez (12:18), Luke Miguez (12:48), Rodrigo Nieto (12:13), Sebastian Dueñas (13:06), Greg Gallinar (12:22) and Albert Fraga (12:57). The 7th and 8th Grade Middle School Football team of 2013 continued its reputation of mental toughness, physical toughness and disciplined play on the gridiron. After two tough losses at the beginning of the season, the Wolverines roared back to win the rest of their games earning the respect and admiration of all who saw them play. Their never quit, never say die attitude carried them to great victories against Mater Academy, Westminster Christian, Saint Andrews, and Westminster Academy. All players on the team contributed in the games and all learned the value of hard work, teamwork, and perseverance. All of Belen can be very proud of the 7th and 8th grade Middle School football Wolverines of 2013.

MS GOLF

The Middle School Golf team finished its season with a 2 win, 2 loss, 1 tie record. The season was highlighted by it’s win over archrival Gulliver whom they also tied in an exciting last match of the season.

The whole team showed tremendous improvement as every player was able to consistently shoot under 50 by the end of the season. I am proud to say that this team worked harder and improved more from beginning to end than any team I have ever coached at Belen.

The team was led by the consistent play of Jose Perez who led the team in stroke average per round with much help from his teammates Andres Perez, Jorge Iglesias, Kevin Azpiri, Enrique Vila, Jorge Moscoso, Bryan Reyes, Alan Fernandez, Jack Barrios, and Guillermo Najera, each of whom took turns in making up our top 4 scorers.

The Middle School Gold team is full of talent. Players controlled and dominated the situation most of the season; their only blemish was a loss to the Blue team. The team bounced back and fought like the spirit of the Wolverine dominating the rest of the competition. With strong goalkeepers in the back and consistent defense, the team only allowed four goals the entire season. The powerful offense pounded the nets scoring 40 goals. The team went on to win the ACC and prove how much talent they really have. Great season by everyone. The future looks promising for the Wolverine soccer program.

The team that had the best season was the one that kept a well balanced squad. The defense was the strength of the team allowing only 11 goals all year. The midfield moved the ball and kept the passing lanes open all the time. The offense was demolishing to the opponents defense scoring 30 goals. MS TENNIS

The Wolverines were an experienced team with many of the starters having played since sixth grade. Charlie Grande impressed with a 3-1 record this season at #1 singles with three of those wins being a combined 18-1 game score. Also playing well was Sebastian Dueñas who had two 6-0 victories this season at #2 singles. Felipe Pardo, Guillermo Amore and Bernardo Poulat anchored the rest of the top five. Newcomers that give exciting hope for the future were seventh graders Rodrigo Nieto and Andres Zuñiga, who was undefeated in his matches this year. Sixth graders Kevin Rui, Diego Belfort and Alex Rodriguez showed great promise and will be an important part of the team for years to come. The Middle School Water Polo team had a productive year in 2014. Led by Coach Lazaro Fernandez, the boys defeated rivals Gulliver Prep, and Miami Country Day. They had their first loss in years to Ransom Everglades. As a team they ended their season 4 wins and 1 loss, and concluded the season in second place at the Middle School Championship.

The 2014 middle school team was a young team, with many new players. They had fun, and learned a lot throughout the season. Leading scorers for the Wolverines were Jose Chaviano, Jason Khoury and Jonathan Manrique.

The sixth grade basketball season was a season to remember. The team was able to complete their goal: an undefeated season. One of the most dominant teams in Belen history, the sixth grade basketball team was loaded with talent. Starting every game at point guard for the Wolverines, Tommy Puente guided the team to a perfect record of 20-0 with his tenacity and smart play. Braden Lamar and Andy Garcia consistently rose to the occasion by leading the team in scoring while Frankie Paredes was a force inside on the glass. Matthew Fernandez’s hard work and team-first attitude was contagious among his teammates. The team was pushed to their limits, competed everyday at practice and responded to each and every challenge. The 6th Grade Basketball team steadily improved their skills throughout the season and finished the season as ACC Champions and Broward County Tournament Champions.

We were competitive in all our races throughout the season winning most and falling short in others but the kids showed their true sportsman character and ended season winning the last two major meets. They won the All Catholic Conference Championship for the 11th time in school history, and for the first time ever we won it for a 3rd consecutive year.

Belen was led by the dynamic duo of Jorge Morasso and Vicente Sanchez who were in the top five of every race this season. The supporting cast of Matthew Bryan, Roger Cainzos, Eduardo Morasso, Diego Belfort, Dominic Chiappone, Chris Fraga, Carlos Bailly and Carlos Maribona proved to be the difference between a mediocre team and a great team. It was the second year of existence for the Belen sixth grade football program. The team fielded 33 up and coming football players. Despite a couple of key injuries early in the season the team started with two wins over Palmer Trinity and University School. In the next two games, however, the Baby Wolverines were shut out by Gulliver Academy and Ransom dropping them to third place in the Dade division. In the Bowl Game the team played American Heritage and in a tight defensive battle lost 8-0. The last game of the year was the team’s best game. Playing an undefeated Gulliver team, the Wolverines took an early lead but ended up giving up two late touchdowns in a 14-6 loss. The sixth grade soccer team was determined from the start to be a great team. Their greatest strength was their unity of play. They demonstrated to have good individual skills that will prove to be valuable at the varsity level down the road. With victories over St. Agnes and Epiphany they looked very strong. Although they had some ups and downs throughout the season, they still went on to win 8 games and only lost 3. With a very strong defense that only allowed 20 goals and unique offense that scored 53 goals, the boys proved they had the skills to compete with anyone in the league.

A perfect season for this very talented group of athletes. From the beginning they were dedicated and hard working and it showed with their first victory at the ACC Relays. After that, it was no looking back for this team that averaged wins by more than 40 points. The team finished off the season with a 1st place victory at the ACC Championship meet and ACC Tri-County Championship meet. The future looks bright for Belen Jesuit track!
