All of us are aware of the discipline, the perseverance and the endurance you have shown when you participate in a competitive sport. In the educational tradition of St. Ignatius Loyola sports play an important part, since they help young men and women to strive to do the “magis”, the “more” which is needed to succeed. By pursuing victory in athletics you are training for the great battles of life, when you will strive to excel in virtue, in academics, and in your life-long commitment to do everything for the greater glory of God.
May the good Lord continue blessing you, your families, your coaches and trainers, with good health and the satisfaction of the good work you have done. May God, the source of all that is beautiful and good, be your inspiration in life today and always.

Winning the FHSAA All Sports trophy for the 2011-2012 school year was indicative of the best boys overall program in the State of Florida for our division. The 2012-13 school year got off where it left off. Both cross country and swimming programs were dominant in their particular sports. They captured County, District, Regional and finally the State Championship. Leading the cross country team were all county runners Avery Lopez, Fabian Tomas, Michael Magoulas and Ryan Rodriguez. Leading the swimming team was Julian Ballestas who is a 5 year letterman, multiple events state champion and All American. He had amazing support from teammates Jose Alvarez, Thomas Avallone, Evan Banciella, Boleck de Pawlikowski, Ryan Guso, Manny Lopez and Juan Perez-Costa. The Fall season also saw the beginning of bowling at Belen. They took first place in the Academic State Competition, given to the team with the highest GPA. In varsity golf senior Oscar Cabanas, made a return trip to the state tournament and will be playing golf for Fordham this Fall. Oscar along with Francisco Smith, and Steven Vega will be dearly missed. The Fall season also witnessed the inauguration of the Pepe Sanchez field at de la Cruz Stadium. A world class synthetic turf field, built by A-Turf. The varsity football team hit a bumpy road and missed the playoffs for the first time in a number of years. Nevertheless, the Wolverines played everyone toe to toe and were in just about every game. Seniors Keonte Cash, Mateo Buraglia, Alex Diblasi, Xavier Hines, Juan Aguila, Austin Riveron, Guillermo Pujals, and Nicholas Garcia among others have signed to play at the collegiate level.
The Winter season was highlighted by the young varsity soccer team earning a number one seed in the district. Unfortunately they suffered an overtime heart breaker loss in the district semifinal game. The varsity wrestling team was led by district champion Keonte Cash, 6th grader Julian Ramirez and senior Benzo Rudnikas. The varsity basketball team recorded a winning season and was led by seniors Javier Alvarez, Guillermo Pujals, Eric Couto and Michael Fernandez.
The Spring season was highlighted by the water polo team making it all the way to the state championship before losing a highly competitive game against St. Thomas Aquinas. The team was led by seniors Herzen Cortes, who is a 7 year letterman, Jake Guso, Enrique Lam, Alfredo Ramirez, Nick Arguelles, Alberto Maza and Michael Fernandez. The varsity track and field team captured the regional championship and was led by the strong middle and long distance core. Avery Lopez in the 1600 M and 3200 M, and Carlos Muñiz in pole vault earned regional championships in their respective events. The 4X800 meter relay team composed of Diego Rojo, Alex Issac, Omar Rosete and Avery Lopez were crowned as State Champions and helped lead Belen to an 8th place finish in the State. The varsity tennis team captured another district championship in a 7-0 sweep and also another regional title. The team finished 6th in the State. Spring Hill bound senior Juan Lorido led the team as their number one singles player and is a 7 year varsity letterman.
The crew team had an outstanding season and has taken the school name to national prominence. They highlighted their season with a first ever Scholastic state championship. Seniors Nicolas Castillo, Christopher Sanu, Manuel de Ovin Berenguer, James Perez and Vincent Vazquez will be missed. The varsity lacrosse team finished with a winning record and qualified to the district playoffs for the first time in their history. Senior Robert Cosio led the team. The varsity baseball team was pitted against two of the best baseball teams in the nation in Mater Academy and Archbishop McCarthy, but still managed to represent our school remarkably well. Thanks to outstanding pitching provided by seniors Daniel Parets and William Fabra the team was able to challenge the best of the best. Other seniors contributing to the success of the team were Nikolas Fernandez, Lucas Fernandez-Rocha, Alexander Lorenzo, Elias Monsalve, Albert Naya, and Oscar Cabanas.
The new practice field located in the NW corner of the school grounds is nearly complete. Thanks to the generosity of the Hernandez family who has funded nearly the entire project. Others who have contributed substantially to this project are: Mr. Eugenio “Chino” Cosculluela, Mr. Guillermo Pujals, Mr. Eric Santa-Cruz. (Persant Company), the Law offices of Zumpano Patricios & Winker, Mr. David Bou, and CAP engineering (Carlos Penin and Andrew Pierce).
New baseball canopies were installed in the baseball field bleacher area and a new fence was installed to enclose the baseball field bleacher area. Plans for the new baseball players’ locker room were submitted to Miami-Dade County for their approval. Plans were donated by Mr. Luis Naya. Additionally, a new baseball scoreboard was installed. All of these projects have been or will be funded by donors who have asked to remain anonymous.
The Sanchez Field at de la Cruz Stadium was inaugurated in late summer and it is one of the premiere fields in the state. This field became a reality thanks to the generosity of the Pepe Sanchez Family, Mr. Mariano Macias, Mr. Frankie Hernandez, Mr. Eugenio Cosculluela, Mr. Ricardo Mayo, Fr. Willie Garcia-Tunon S.J., Fr. Pedro Suarez S.J., the Society of Jesus, Belen Jesuit School, Mr. Eduardo Perez, Mr. Amadeo Lopez-Castro, Mr. Rene Veliz, Mr. Angel Veliz, Mr. Jorge Padron, Mr. Alex Adams and many others.
The Nike Hill presented by the Garrido Family was finally completed. Thanks to the leadership of Mr. Francisco “Paco” Ruiz, Mr. Angel Clemente, the Garrido Foundation, Mr. Carlos Penin (C.A.P. engineering), A-Turf, Mr. Naldo Gonzalez, Mr. Larry Candela (ICORE), Mr. John Medina, Mr. Pedro Munilla (MCM), Mr. Jorge Munilla (MCM), Mr. Eric Santa-Cruz (Persant), Mr. Eduardo Arazoza (Arazoza Brothers), Mr. Alberto Arazoza (Arazoza Brothers), Mr. Peter Montadas (Momentum Consulting), Mr. Carlos Vara and Mr. Adalberto Vara.
The pool building plans are nearly complete. The pool committee composed of Mr. Carlos Zumpano, Mr. Joey Zumpano, Mr. Javier Salman, Dr. Steve Avallone, Mr. Jim Baker, Mr. Miguel Tomasino, Mrs. Ligia Lopez-Cantera and the law firm of Zumpano Patricios & Winker are hard at work to see this project become a reality.

The Wolverines baseball team finished the 2013 campaign with a record of 20-9, advancing into the district championship and the regional quarterfinals. The team was led by a solid, senior-led pitching staff and a young exciting line-up throughout the year.
Highlights from the season included the team’s impressive 12-2 district record, the team’s 3-1 record in the National Selective Recruiting tournament, and their 2-1 record in the Tampa Jesuit tournament.
Four of our seniors have committed to play collegiately – Elias Monsalve and Willie Fabra will play at Division I – Manhattan College, Alex Lorenzo will play at Loyola of New Orleans, and Lucas Fernandez-Rocha will play at prestigious Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. Oscar Cabanas will head to Fordham on a golf scholarship, while Albert Naya, Niko Fernandez, Robert Morgado, and Danny Parets will all remain in state on academic scholarships.
The team returns a strong group of underclassmen for the 2014 campaign, as the Wolverines look to build upon the strong foundation being laid.

The varsity basketball team returned to its winning tradition compiling a 15 – 11 record this past season. Playing in one of the toughest districts in the state, the Wolverines were able to win 9 out of 14 district games to secure a spot in the district playoff. Losses by less than four points to Northwestern and Norland and key victories against Curley, Central, South Dade, and St. Joseph from South Carolina highlighted a successful season. The season ended with a loss to the eventual State Champion Norland in their closest win in the playoffs.
The Wolverines were led by Javier Alvarez with 13.5 points, 3.5 assists, and 3 steals per game, Eric Couto with 10 points and 2.5 steals per game, and Guillermo Pujals with 7 points and 5.5 rebounds. Other contributors included Michael Fernandez with 6 points and 2.5 rebounds per game, Nicolas Iparraguirre with 6.5 points, 2.5 assists, and 6 rebounds per game, Andres Perez with 5 points and 2 rebounds per game, and Johnny Medina with 4.5 points and 4 rebounds per game. Jose Roca Jr. supplied a burst of energy and solid play off the bench, while Frank Battle contributed with his inside presence. Ryan Murphy, although injured, provided leadership throughout the season. Matthew Fernandez, Jonathan Herrera, and Michael Diaz-Silveira will bring experience to next year’s team.

The 2012-2013 brought a new varsity sport to Belen Jesuit. The varsity bowling team was conceived from the desire and hearts of students at Belen who had a deep affection for a sport that was not represented at the school. They organized themselves, they found faculty members to mentor and coach them to the best of their ability. This school year brought that hard work to fruition. While they may not have excelled against some terrific competition, they learned a tremendous amount about being a team and the core value at Belen Jesuit the MAGIS.
The students competed week in and week out, practicing multiple days a week trying to better their game and hopefully begin to match the high esteem that Belen Jesuit Athletics has achieved over the years. They did match that high level of achievement when they were recognized by the FHSAA as the Varsity Bowling team with the highest cumulative GPA in the entire state.
These students continue to show that at Belen that athletics and academics are a perfect combination of the core value of MAGIS.

The team participated for the second time in the prestigious Head of the Charles regatta in Boston. The Lightweight team competed in the heavy weight event finishing 31st place with a total of 85 boats. In the Fall the team ended with a total of 22 medals (7 gold 11 silver 4 bronze) from competing in the following regattas: Head of the Indian Creek (Miami Beach), Head of the Hooch (Chattanooga TN), Head of the Charles (Boston), and Head of the Giblet (Orlando). In the Spring season the team received a total of 36 medals (14 gold 13 silver 9 bronze) from the following events: Novice Regatta (Orlando), Oars Regatta (Orlando), Sarasota Invitational, Miami International, Manny Flick (Philadelphia), San Diego Crew Classic (California), and the Sculling States Championship (Sarasota). We were invited for the first time to The Manny Flick regatta in Philadelphia along with the best teams in the NE. Belen, with two boats racing, brought home 1 gold and 1 bronze medal. The team also went to the San Diego Crew Classic in California for the second time the second biggest regatta in the nation. With the lightweight boat, while in third and fighting for second place, Belen was forced to take evasive action and lost the position. The offending team was excluded, but the damage was done and Belen finished in fourth place. Our last race until this moment was State Sculling Championship. For the first time Belen won over all points Scholastic with 34 team competing. Now the team is getting ready for the Sweep States Championship, South East Regional in Oak Ridge, TN, Scholastic National Championship in NJ, Youth National in TN and our final race The Canadian Henley in Canada.

The 2012 Belen Cross Country season further glorified the 42 years of running tradition at Belen. This team spent little time riding the previous season’s accolades, instead they picked off where the prior team left off and made a mark of their own. They understood early on that running for Belen is greater than oneself and in order to relate and contribute to the winning tradition the team had to unite as ONE. The team dominated the entire state under the leadership of senior Avery Lopez. All season long, meet after meet, the team racked up the wins and earned the distinction of beating every single team in Florida across all classifications. They carried this dominating momentum and a ‘take nothing for granted’ attitude all season long and captured the school’s 7th Cross Country State Championship at FSU’s Apalachee Regional Park, marking a 3rd straight title and 6th in the last 7 years. Make no mistake, this was no easy task. The target on Belen’s back is huge, for the program has nearly been undefeated for the last 3 years. And has consistently earned a national reputation for being a perennial top program. Teams have been aggressive in their attempts to beat Belen and this season was no different. The team used its depth, its relentless drive to win and over 1,000 miles of training to successfully accomplish its goals throughout the season. One other notable accomplishment of this team is that it had 10 runners that ran times in the 5K that ranked them in the Top 25 All-Time Belen runner list. The team is already looking forward to the 2013 season and ready to work even harder, as it graduates only 2 of the top 14 runners in the program.

This past season was truly one of many ups and downs as the team battled in the toughest district in the country. With the Wolverines fighting hard in every game, they only managed to pull through in two of them. Almost every contest was closely fought with the Wolverines competing hard until the last second of every game. Having had the pre-season classic against Tampa Jesuit cancelled due to lighting, the team opened the season on the new playing field against Hialeah High. The contest was a very close one, going back and forth the entire game. Unfortunately the Thoroughbreds pulled through in the end to win by 10. Later in the season the Wolverines dropped close district games that literally came down to the last second. They were against Carol City and a tough home overtime loss to Homestead. The high point of the season came against traditional rival Gulliver. The Wolverines held on to win and in the process extended the winning streak against Gulliver to ten years. The season did not go as planned, but a very enjoyable one with both heartaches and good times.

We had a young team led by our senior Oscar Cabanas who has represented Belen Jesuit in the state finals three years in a row. We had strong competitive play from Guillermo and Joaquin. Our team also had young players who were exposed to competitive play this season. As a coach I am proud to say that everywhere we play our team always distinguishes itself for having great etiquette and good sportsmanship. I will miss our graduating seniors Oscar, Steve and Frankie and wish them success in all their future endeavours and look forward to next year.

The 2013 varsity lacrosse season was a breakout year for the Belen Jesuit lacrosse program. The team set records for most wins in a season (11), most goals in a season (193), and lowest average goals allowed per game (7.57). For the first team ever, the team defeated Miami Palmetto, Coral Shores, and Miami Country Day and made the District Playoffs for the 1st since entering the FHSAA. During Spring Break the team participated in the Jesuit Lacrosse Classic and left a mark on several New York teams with a victory over Rochester McQuaid Jesuit and a near victory against Fordham Prep. Individually, the team saw Robby Cosio set the record for goals/assists (58 goals/36 assists) in a season and goals/assists (167 goals/136 assists) in a career. Matt Cristobal and Paco Villafañe led the defense and received strong post-season recognition for their efforts. Offensively, the tandem of Robby Cosio and Ethan Rodriguez carried Belen to a mid-season 7 game winning streak. The midfield was led by the efforts of Danny Hillman, Christian Barial, Jorge Powell, EJ Cosculluela, Kevin Pascual and Matthew Marrero. On close defense the team was able to control the tempo of the opposing offenses with the long stick play of Michael Munoz, Nick Leonard, Felipe Prellezo, Oscar Ortega, Alex Adams, and Oscar Vila. The senior leadership was very strong on the team and this class was the last of the original founding members of the Belen lacrosse program. They will be sorely missed, but have created the foundation of success that the program will enjoy in the future.

It was a season with many contrasts, since during the regular season the team stayed atop of the district standings by losing only one district game. We have a very young team that included 9 underclassmen, who were key to the team’s success. The contrast came when the team could not maintain the level of play during the regular season and lost in a fiercely contested District Semifinal game to Westland 2-1 in overtime. The loss came when the referee whistled for a penalty kick, claiming that a shot in the area hit one of our defenders hand when it really hit his side. Westland converted the penalty kick keeping us from advancing to the finals. I only mention this to recall the way in which we were eliminated; not as a gripe. These are the tough moments that are difficult to overcome since the team worked so hard to reach its goal of returning to the state final four. Unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be but we are already looking forward to trying again next year. The positive is that we see a bright future ahead with young talented individuals. All brewed from within our institution since 6th grade. The key will be keeping the players playing, learning and getting better throughout the year. My dream is to be able to coach a group that began in 6th grade into a State Championship in 12th grade.
I would like to thank all the players for once again exalting the name Belen Jesuit, as they took the field. I am also thankful for their efforts, dedication and unity. I would also like to thank those that directly and indirectly help the soccer program. Also thank you to the families that year in and year out follow the program. Our Sixth State Championship! “Honoring this year’s Team is Special.” First this was the only time in Belen Swimming history that the team went “Undefeated!”! They had the only undefeated Duel Meet season in our Teams 30 year plus history. They Defeated Columbus, Ransom, Gulliver, Doral, Pine Crest – Ft. Lauderdale, Key West and Coral Shores along with the “Independent School Championships” at Ransom High School, they defended their “Dade County Championship” which led to their “District Championship” – on to their “Regional Championship” and finally their “6th State Championship”! These student-athletes have succeeded in an accomplishment that has never been done before. I (we) honor their persistence, talent, work-ethic and ability to stay focused on the goal during the ups and downs of this past season. The program was built upon the history of other past student-athlete’s determination to set a standard that all future teams strive to equal.
We had our individual “State Champion” Julian Ballestas (200 Freestyle [*School Record*], 2nd 100 Freestyle [*School Record*]) along with a tremendous supporting group of student-athletes in Boleck de Pawlikowski (4th 100 Backstroke, 7th 500 Freestyle), Jose Alvarez (7th 100 Butterfly, 8th 100 Backstroke), Manuel Lopez (11th 200 Individual Medley, 9th 100 Breastroke), Ryan Guso ( 7th 50 Freestyle), and then our fantastic Relays. Of the three Relays, Belen won two and finished 3rd in one! The Lead Relay (200 Medley Relay - 3rd)) consisted of Boleck de Pawlikowski, Manuel Lopez, Jose Alvarez and Ryan Guso, establishing a *New School Record*. The Winning 200 Freestyle Relay , Julian Ballestas [lead off leg *School Record*], Ryan Guso, Evan Banciella and Thomas Avallone. Our final Winning Relay The 400 Freestyle Relay (Juan Perez-Costa, Jose Alvarez, Ryan Guso and Julian Ballestas) solidified the boys championship finish.
Of this group of swimmers that represented Belen Jesuit, the following are First Team “All-Dade” (Thomas Avallone, Jose Alvarez, Julian Ballestas, Evan Banciella, Boleck de Pawlikowski, Ryan Guso, Manuel Lopez and Juan Perez-Costa) These swimmers along with their team-mates provided a memorable season. We thank our school for providing a vision for future generations, a vision towards building a path for others to follow and succeed in life’s challenges. When you begin a journey as a team, you must all believe in the same values of dedication and sacrifice to keep your FOCUS on the goal. This year the varsity Wolverine tennis team witnessed a historic end of an era. A fourth straight district championship, sweeping all seven categories; a second regional championship, and the end of an era, the likes of which Belen tennis has never seen. Senior Captain Juan Lorido strode off the center court here in his last match ever at Belen in the regional victory. A seven year letterman, four time district tennis champion, regional singles champ and #1 starter for the last five years. Lorido is the last player who played for Coach Collins and his career has exemplified the magis. He led a team of steady performers like Will Lorenzo, Bryan Rodriguez, Alejandro Hasegawa and Christian Perez who steadily worked their way through tough opponents and dug deep to come together as a team. While Lorido was invaluable to this team, he is the only player graduating. So look for this tough Wolverine team to be in the hunt for a fifth straight district title.

The Wolverines had a great season. In a historic first we won the Burley Invitational that is attended by the top programs in the state. Also after a heartbreaking 1.5 point loss in the districts, the Wolverines bounced back to win in convincing fashion the Regional championship. This year’s team was completely made up of underclassmen. The season was not a success as we had hoped for but nevertheless the players gained valuable experience. We ended the season with a record of 6-17 but with everyone coming back next year expectations are high for a successful year. We will be adding an assistant coach next year. Having him on the staff will allow for more individual training and also help out with the club sessions this year.

The Belen varsity water polo team had a fantastic season ending up in second at the State finals. The overall season record was 21 wins and 2 losses. Led by Coach Jimmy Aguilera and Asst. Coach Lazaro Fernandez Bueno the Belen team grew stronger physically and mentally, and bonded like never before.
The Wolverines captured another District title by defeating Ransom Everglades, and ended up defeating Miami Country Day, Dr. Phillips, and St. Andrews on their road to the state title game. It was a tough loss at the finals, but the Wolverines held strong through the end.
Seven amazing seniors pulled the team together. Herzen Cortes and Jake Guso led the team all year as captains. Alfredo Ramirez, Enrique Lam, Nick Arguelles, Michael Fernandez, and AJ Maza all played key roles in the Belen line up. AJ Maza showed his strong character, playing up until the very last game with an injured foot.
The depth of the team did not end there. Ryan Guso had his best year as varsity goalie. Ryan blocked over 200 shots throughout the season. Santiago Nunez, Max Goldberg and Adrian Alepuz also had an amazing season.
We look forward to another amazing season next year. We have high hopes that the Belen pool will be built in the near horizon so we can make our program grow. We wish our seniors much love and success in their new endeavors. A special thank you to Mr. Herzen Cortes for his years of photographic excellence. A huge thanks to Mrs. Miriam Guso who helps pull it all together.

The wrestling team had a rough season as a team because we were unable to field a complete team; but individually the Wolverines had a pretty good year. Benzo Rudnikas posted a record of 35-5 and was the 152 Lbs. district runner-up. Keonte Cash finished the year with a record of 26-4 was the 285 Lbs. district champion. The youngest of the group 6th grader Julian Ramirez began what looks to be a promising career with a record of 30-8 and was the 106 Lbs. district runner-up. Both Cash and Ramirez were one match away at regionals from qualifying for the state tournament.

The JV baseball team had a very competitive season winning 17 of the 22 games played and taking the series from American Heritage and Mater Academy. Our highlight moment was winning back to back games against Coral Springs Charter and McCarthy both in the last inning with 2 outs with game winning hits from the same player, Albert Maury. The JV team played every game with passion and high energy providing success at the plate and in defense plus a lot of credit to our pitching staff behind our pitching coach Ivan Montane. The junior varsity baseball season was a superb example of team work, dedication, values and a measure of the future of Belen baseball.

Despite starting the season with serious injuries to three key players, the junior varsity basketball team accomplished another very successful season. The team finished with a record of 16-8, playing a very tough schedule. This group with two freshmen and eleven sophomores, all playing together for the first time, played relentless pressure defense and fast break oriented offense which enabled them to outscore their opponents by an average of 15 points per game. Season highlights included impressive wins over Norland, Central, Tampa Plant, and Mater Academy.
Daniel Romeu, Joseph Ordoñez, Carlos Perez-Heydrich, A.J. Consuegra, Joseph Cirera, and E.J. Cruz were instrumental in scoring, rebounding, steals and assists. Andrew Powell, Richard Rodriguez, Guillermo Vadell, and Louis Giordano also provided valuable help in key situations. In addition, Mariano Macias, Brandon Silvestry and Ignacio Perez made notable contributions. This year’s team was very dedicated and worked extremely arduous. They were remarkably disciplined, unselfish and demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship.

For the JV crew, 2013 was a year of unprecedented speed, hard training and dedication. The crew team attended important and prestigious races this season. The Head of the Charles in Boston the most important regatta in the United States, the San Diego Crew Classic and the Manny Flick in Philadelphia hosted by St. Joseph’s Prep. In both seasons, the Fall and Spring, armed with a new coaching staff and determined athletes the rowing team took its speed to great success by winning 58 medals; 21 gold, 24 silver and 13 bronze. The Wolverines also won for the first time in school history the overall Scholastic State Sculling Championship. At the time of publication the team continues training to perform its best at the State Championship in Sarasota and the Scholastic National Championship in New Jersey.

Our 4-3 record this past year might mislead one to think thoughts of mediocrity. But that could not be further from the truth. We were fortunate to have several of our key players move up and contribute to the varsity. In their absence we had to move players to play new positions and replace experienced players with less experienced players. None the less we started off well with two big wins over American Heritage and Key West. Lost close games to Gulliver and Monsignor Pace, but bounced back to end the season with a great thrilling overtime win against St. Thomas Aquinas. So 4-3 is what goes in the record books but the full picture is one of self sacrifice, commitment and teamwork. We look forward to next year and the challenges it will bring. We will be working all the harder to meet said challenges in the memory of Jonathan Perez.

The 2013 JV lacrosse was the most successful JV team we have ever had at Belen. The team started out slowly losing 4 of their first 5 games, but continued their hard work and turned the corner in mid-season to win 5 of the remaining 7 games. The team was led by the dynamic play of Matt Salas in the goal. The defense was strong and aggressive and the Freshman trio of Louis Corps, Ted Huertas, and Danny Garcia-Tuñon played excellent team defense. Offensively – Carlos Martinez, Andres Chinchilla, Johnny Powell, and Brian Pascual carried much of the midfield duties. The play of the attack by Danny Dager, Gabriel Dager, Danny Hondal, and Richie Perez controlled the tempo of the offensive and delivered 75% of the team goals. The team had many 8th and 9th graders contribute and many look to make a jump to the varsity next season. This group of young athletes will be continuing the tradition that the current Senior class has started of contending for the District Championship and beyond.

We finished 2nd in our league after losing the championship game to South Dade 4-2. It was a joy to watch these young freshmen learn and mature in such a short time. We accomplished what I consider to be most important when coaching a team, which is to peak and grow and play your best towards the end of your season and that is exactly how we finished playing together and building the character to pull for one another as one. In the league playoffs we had a 3-0-1 record before playing Braddock in the semifinal. We won the game 10-5, giving us the opportunity to play for the championship against South Dade.
The 2012-2013 freshman basketball team enjoyed a successful season finishing with a record of 16-3. The team this year took on a longer than usual schedule, highlighted by a runner-up finish in the North Broward Prep. tournament, a victory against Melbourne Central Catholic and sweeping rival Gulliver Prep. The team’s exciting aggressive style of play and their superior depth led to a 26 point average margin of victory throughout their 16 victories. Giancarlo Pinto’s consistent excellence led a ferocious guard oriented attack along with Steve Marin, Armand Del Castillo, Johnny Powell and Gabriel Cabrera. Luis Mejer’s versatility and non-stop motor had a lasting impact on the success of the team. Big men, Daniel Mejia, Christopher Jauregui and Sebastian Leiter provided the necessary defense, rebounding and timely baskets. Nicolas Roca, Daniel Puente, Daniel Sixto and David Salazar contributed with their energy, hustle and perimeter shooting. This year was my 2nd year coaching the majority of these young men and the team’s dedication, hard work and camaraderie made for a memorable, successful and enjoyable season. We would like to thank all the coaches, parents and students for all their support throughout the season.

The middle school gold baseball team once again had a successful year as the team ended the season with a record of 20-4-1. In the second year of the South Florida Middle School Baseball League the young wolverines came in 2nd place losing a hard fought game versus Somerset Academy of Broward County. The team finished in the top spot of the ACC baseball league and showed great team unity throughout the year. The baseball program is looking bright for the future with this crop of 8th graders.

The 7th grade baseball team had an outstanding season. It was a team where every player contributed to the team’s success. For the majority of the season the team was in contention for the ACC title and at the time of this publication it is tied for first place in the league. It was my great pleasure to coach these outstanding student-athletes and see them grow as men as well as in their baseball skills. I would like thank Coach Jorge Rodriguez for his outfield and hitting expertise and for donating his time to helping our players. Last but certainly not least to our great parents for all their support, you are all a big part of why this team was so successful! I wish all our players the best and may you have a great season next year with the Gold team.
The 2012-2013 Belen gold basketball team continued the tradition of excellence by previous teams by enjoying an outstanding season. The Wolverines displayed an attack that featured an open motion offense based on crisp passing and sharp cuts. Predictably, scoring was balanced, with six different players leading the team throughout the season. Defensively, the squad’s stingy man-to-man defense usually resulted in transition baskets that put many games out of reach by the end of the third quarter. The team’s main strength, its depth, was always on display in wearing opponents down. This was especially true in the ACC championship game when the Wolverines avenged their only loss of the season by defeating archrival Epiphany by the score of 45-13. The twelve players on the gold team exemplified all of the qualities of a successful team- unselfish play, “team-first” spirit, and great friendship. They deserve to be mentioned with the best of Belen’s all-time teams.

It is not often that one can be so dependant on young bucks to carry the bulk of the team, but that was the situation this year. The 7th and 6th graders stepped up and were key members to the team’s success. The Wolverine harriers picked up where they left off last year and went undefeated this season and captured the school’s 17th Dade County Championship and dominated the ACC by obtaining their 22nd title. The excellent results are no because of mere chance. These kids were dedicated, worked hard, running in the heat, the rain, the humidity, the mud, in all kinds of condition except freezing cold. Throughout a practice they are faced with a constant question, to keep going or to stop. In that struggle they find out a little bit about themselves and what they are capable of doing. They persevere the challenge and are better men for it. But even all that hard work and dedication does not guarantee results. It only gives you the opportunity to perform your best. These kids took the opportunities and capitalized as they ran the competition down besting the best programs from around the state. These kids are poised to step right into the varsity program and become the next crop of state champions. They are only successful due to their support staff, the parents. Thank you for being such a constant show of support without being intrusive.

This year’s middle school football team finished with a record of 4 wins and 3 losses. The record of this year’s team does not reflect the work ethic and heart that this group of young men have. Early in the season we were hit with key injuries, but that did not affect the team. Some teams would have collapsed and never would have bounced back, but not this team. Instead they came together and stepped up getting some big wins against rivals Gulliver and American Heritage Plantation. You can expect a lot of great things from this team in the future as soon as next year. If they keep on working hard and continue showing the heart they have shown you can expect to see those great things in JV from the 8th graders going into 9th and the MS football team from the 7th graders going into 8th. They are ready to prove that if you work hard and believe in yourself and your brother next to you anything is possible.

The team was characterized by its hard work and dedication throughout the year. By far, this is the most dedicated team I have ever had the pleasure coaching. Their desire to improve their game has been inspirational and has continued in the off-season. The team was led by 8th graders Alejandro Smith, Daniel Chavez, and Jorge Iglesias.

The middle school gold soccer team won every single game that they played except one, finishing with an almost perfect record of 7-1. Along the way the team defeated the Belen blue team, St. Theresa, St. Kevin, St. Agatha, St. Brendan, and St. Timothy. The team scored a total of 58 goals and conceded 6. Alain Bonvecchio led the team with 10 goals and 2 assists; Mateus Tordin 8 goals and 8 assists, Lucas Gomez 7 goals and 3 assists, Juan Felipe Pereira 6 goals and 9 assists, Alfred Perez 5 goals and 3 assists, and Christopher Moustafa 5 goals and 1 assist. This team has been one of the most talented teams that have come through Belen with a lot of really good, promising young players. The team played at a high level the whole season and showed a lot of promise for the future. With a lot of hard work and sacrifice they will bring a lot of success to Belen soccer program in the future.

The middle school blue soccer team had a successful season. Led by team captain Mark Garrigo, the team finished the season with 6 wins and only two losses. The team finished the season one game shy of first place in a highly competitive ACC Conference. The highlights of the season included a home win against Epiphany. The team’s stellar defensive play was able to shut out Epiphany and limit their chances of scoring. Sebastian Clark was able to find the back of the net late into the second half to seal the 1-0 victory for the Wolverines. The Belen blue team completed its season with a hard fought match against the Belen gold team. The game proved to be a great measure of the team’s hard work and dedication on the field throughout the season.

Belen middle saw another successful season of swimming during 2012, 3rd place tournament finishes capped off by a narrow defeat of third place contender Hialeah Gardens at the middle school Dade County Youth Fair championship. The swimming program also saw a tremendous increase in size this year, and a large influx of 6th graders is the beginning of a great feeder program for the stellar high school team. As another season comes to a close and the weather becomes just slightly cooler in the Winter months, we hope that all the athletes enjoyed the spirit of competition enough to swim next year.

The middle school Wolverine tennis program once again stepped up to the plate loaded with talent and a passion for the game. Led by 8th graders Eduardo Scheuren and Juan Rodriguez, the team defeated Epiphany decisively 6-1. Seventh graders Charlie Grande and Sebastian Dueñas also won, showing they are anchors for next year’s squad. Despite losing to rival Gulliver, the team showed guts and resilience with Grande’s tough win at #3. After a disappointing postponement with Ransom, the Wolverines made quick work of Doral Academy 5-2 in the season finale. With a loaded core of seventh graders, the team looks poised not only to dominate next year, but to provide varsity players for the next five years.

We began the season as individuals with eager minds ready to learn. We grew together as the season progressed, working our way through the kinks; and before us potential leaders began to shine. We were challenged and humbled as we went up against some of the State’s finest at our most competitive meets. We came together as a team and won almost every home meet. The Belen middle school polo program had an amazing year. Led by Coach Lazaro Fernandez Bueno, the Wolverines won 4 out of 5 games, and brought home the Middle School Championship title for a second year in a row.
The team was led by goalie Eric Labrador and Federico Tamborrel. Pablo Kurzan, Sebastian Melendez, Nicolas Aguilar, Gabriel Kasabji, and Jose Chaviano contributed to the teams overall success . They also helped teach the newer boys that came to water polo for the first time.
The team really bonded this year by participating in a camping trip and a few team dinners. Thanks to the multitude of parents who helped throughout the season in many ways. One thing is for certain with the future of the baseball program and that is if they continue to work hard as they have, you can expect a lot of great things accomplishments by this program in the future.

This year’s 6th grade basketball season got off to a very unusual start. Due to the first year of having a 6th grade football team, try outs had to take place before school even started. Over sixty students came out to battle for a spot on the team, and after an intensive week and a half the roster with fourteen players was complete. This year’s team had a very successful year with a record of nine wins and one loss and a share of the ACC division title. Our only loss came at the hands of archrival Epiphany on their home court. We were able to come back a couple of weeks later with a solid victory in the Belen gym. This was a fun group to be around and I truly enjoyed coaching them. I would like to thank my assistant coach Christian Marrero for his help and support with these players this season. My message to the players is to keep working hard in all that you do, and I wish them all the best in the coming years.

Sometimes the stars just align right and you get an amazing group of kids. This was one of the most talented group of 6th graders that have roamed the grounds of Belen. These kids are so talented that they were recruited to run in the middle school team also. They are fast, fun and ferocious competitors. In a short period of time they were able to come together display some amazing running in the courses throughout the county and the state. They won the Belen, St. Theresa I and II Invitationals. They came in an amazing 4th place at the Holy Rosary while being short manned since the majority ran in the middle school race only. They were able to bring in the school’s 10th ACC Championship and Tri-County Championship. Thank you parents for your support all season. The fun is just starting, enjoy it because it’ll be over before you know it.

The inaugural sixth grade football season was a tremendous success. With a great group of dedicated players and an experienced coaching staff this season laid the foundation for these players to flourish at the next level. The team began the season with two wins over Ransom and Palmer but then lost to two more experienced teams in Westminster and University School. After finishing 3rd in the South division the team defeated Pine Crest from the North Division in their bowl game. The last game was a hard fought battle against Gulliver in which the baby Wolverines lost by two points. In closing, the team and coaching staff would like to thank our team moms Patty Lopez and Chary Esteban for their support of the team and especially their coordination of the parent booster club. Thanks also to the wonderful parents who supported the team, all of you made this season a wonderful experience.

The sixth grade soccer team set one goal at the beginning of the season which was to end their season undefeated. Led by team captain Tyler Abella, the Wolverines were able to complete their goal and become ACC champs! The highlight of the season included a home victory against a highly competitive Gulliver team. Playing on the newly renovated turf field, Belen was able to limit Gulliver’s chances on offense by the stellar defensive play of Tyler Abella, Jorge Jimenez and Guillermo Molero. Gregory Gallinar started off the scoring with a left footed blast from just outside of the box. Carlos Gonzalez scored a hatrick for Belen which included the game winning header off of a well-placed corner kick from Rodrigo Madiedo, who dominated the midfield throughout the match. The team was loaded with a tremendous amount of talent, but their hard work everyday at practice allowed them to improve their skills throughout the season. Belen’s sixth grade soccer season was a season to remember.
