Congratulations on your achievements in your athletic endeavors this year! All of us are aware of the discipline, the perseverance and the endurance you have shown when you participate in a competitive sport. In the educational tradition of St. Ignatius Loyola sports play an important part, since they help young men and women to strive to do the “magis”, the “more” which is needed to succeed. By pursuing victory in athletics you are training for the great battles of life, when you will strive to excel in virtue, in academics, and in your life-long commitment to do everything for the greater glory of God.

May the good Lord continue blessing you, your families, your coaches and trainers, with good health and the satisfaction of the good work you have done. May God, the source of all that is beautiful and good, be your inspiration in life today and always.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School

Our 2011-2012 sports program had another outstanding year. The Belen Jesuit athletic program once again finished among the top two overall athletic programs in Florida according to FHSAA. Belen Jesuit has now finished among the top two schools in our classification for the past four years. Excellence in sports was not only achieved by the majority of our varsity teams, but also by many of our student athletes and coaches.

The varsity cross country team recorded their 5th State Championship in six years; additionally they captured a first place finish in the Southeast Region of the USA, the first school from Florida to do so. In doing so, they earned a trip to compete in the National Championships in Portland Oregon. Senior and UF bound Elliot Clemente led the team as he became the 3rd Belen runner to capture an individual State Championship in the sport. Elliot was named the Florida runner of the year by Florida Dairy Farmers Association. Head coach Frankie Ruiz was selected as Florida Cross Country Coach of the year regardless of classification. The five year state dominance in swimming came to an end as the team finished 4th in the State, Julian Ballestas had another outstanding season for the Wolverines.

Other milestones achieved by Belen Jesuit varsity teams were the following. The following teams made it to the FHSAA state playoff series by finishing among the top two schools of their district tournaments. Football, Soccer, Baseball, Golf, Tennis and Water Polo. The crew team also managed to win a large number of Gold medals and three of their boats were invited to the most prestigious regatta in the USA. The event took place in San Diego. In Wrestling, 126 lb. wrestler Esteban Gomez-Rivera finished his illustrious career by capturing his 2nd State Championship in four years. During his high school career he earned two State Runner-ups and two State Championships. This accomplishment propelled him to a spot in the Florida Wrestling Hall of Fame. The baseball team has advanced deep into the playoffs. Joey Rodriguez is among the best players in the county. Alex De Goti has been invited to a professional showcase and Alex Lavandero has been phenomenal on the mond for the Wolverines during the playoffs. Coach Albert has done an outstanding job.

Five of our varsity teams captured District Championships and many went deep into the playoffs.

In the academic front, 12 out of 13 FHSAA varsity teams made it to the All State Academic Honor Roll. Not only do our student athletes continue to excel in the field of play but also in the academic front and in community service and they are active participants in the religious and spiritual life of the school.

Our middle school program continues to rank as the best overall program in Miami Dade County and in the All Catholic Conference.

NEW PROJECTS:

In baseball: The addition of an exercise room, added storage space, canopies for fan protection have been approved by Miami-Dade County and plans which were the courtesy of Mr. Luis Naya are ready for construction; A new olympic size 50 meter swimming pool will replace the old Gian Zumpano swimming pool. Plans for the pool have been donated by C3TS and alumnus Mr. Javier Salman ‘81 and Mr. Robert Barnes and Associates. Also instrumental in the pool project are Mr. Miguel Tomasino, Mr. Jim Baker, Mr. Steve Avallone and Mrs. Ligia Lopez-Cantera. Mr. Joey Zumpano ‘87 and the Law Firm of Zumpano, Patricios & Winker have been an intricate part of the pool project as well and along with CAP engineering headed by Mr. Carlos Penin ‘73 have been instrumental in the pursuit to develop the northwest lot which will give us much needed green areas for our teams to practice. Thanks to the initiative of Mr. Mariano Macias, Mr. Pepe Sanchez, Mr. Frankie Hernandez, Mr. Eugenio Cosculluela ‘79, Mr. Ricky Mayo ‘85, Fr. Willie Garcia-Tuñon S.J. ‘87, the Belen administration, and many others a new synthetic football/soccer field will soon be a reality. Construction is scheduled to begin towards the end of this month and should be completed by early August 2012. When done it will be the most modern and the best football/soccer field in South Florida. Thanks to the leadership of Mr. Francisco “Paco” Ruiz ‘73 the construction of the Nike hill in the cross country course has begun.

Team Recognition: District Champions

The varsity baseball season got under way with two terrific victories over Westminster Christian and Christopher Columbus in the Explorers First-Pitch Classic. From there, the excitement continued to grow as the Wolverines rolled through their district schedule in anticipation of playing the first baseball game ever to be played at the new Marlins Ballpark. 6,500 fans from the two schools packed the brand new stadium for a night that most will never forget. For one evening, the members of the Belen baseball team were “Major Leaguers” and the support and energy from the entire school community was overwhelming. The team finished the regular season district schedule in first place with a 12-1 record.

The Wolverines entered two of the toughest tournaments in the state, the Selective Recruiting tournament and the Tampa Jesuit Easter tournament. It was during the experience of the Tampa tournament in April that the team began to roll. The team regrouped to win the last two games of the tournament in dramatic fashion and returned to Miami to take down rival LaSalle and up and coming Westwood Christian to finish the regular season.

The district tournament was next on the horizon and the Belen varsity nine captured the Championship with victories over Westland and HML. The championship earned the squad a home regional quarterfinal game against Pembroke Pines Charter, and a chance to avenge a regular season loss to the Jaguars. The Wolverines were more than up to the challenge, as they came away with a 10-0 victory and a birth in the regional semifinals against two-time defending state champ, Archbishop McCarthy. The Wolverines came up on the short end of an outstanding pitcher’s duel, 2-1, but battled admirably to the end. The varsity baseball team finished their season with a record of 20-9, a District Championship, and lessons, memories, and experiences that will last a lifetime.

VARSITY BASKETBALL

The varsity basketball team’s record this year was 11 wins and 14 losses, including five losses of six points or less. Season ending injuries to two key players contributed to a difficult season. Notable accomplishments included defeating Westwood Christian and Archbishop Coleman Carroll, both schools with 20 + win seasons, within a week and ending the season on a three game winning streak.

The Wolverines were led by Javier Alvarez, Pedro Cirera and Michael Fernandez who were among the top 4 in points, steals, and assists. Emmanuel Noya, Ricardo Fernandez, Alex PisDudot, and Christian Marrero contributed to the team’s success as seniors on the team. Juniors Jason Gutierrez, Guillermo Pujals, and Jose Roca Jr. supplied the much needed energy coming off the bench, while sophomores Nicolas Iparraguirre and John Medina played extensive minutes throughout the season. Unfortunately, Eric Couto and Ryan Murphy remained on the injured reserve list throughout the season.

Next year’s season looks very promising with eight returning players and a good mix of underclassmen.

For the JV crew, 2012 was a year of unprecedented speed, discipline, and hard training. Armed with a new coaching staff and determined athletes. At the time of publishing, Belen Crew continues to train to take home a gold at States and the Scholastic National Championships in New Jersey. If one looks back at the many years of sports banquet program books and yearbook coverage of a particular team’s season many mention making history and new records and so forth. Well, without taking away from those who have come before us, this year’s team deserves an entire chapter in the history books. The 2011 cross country team accomplished greatness in so many levels of competition and most certainly will be an inspiration for future teams to build upon. The 41st year team, made powerful performance statements at the local, state and for the first time ever even at the national level. The team’s season best 5K average was 15:37, a feat not achieved by any team to date in the State of Florida. The 2011 team managed to capture major invitational wins at the UF Invitational, Flrunners.com Invitational, Miami-Dade County Championships, Pre-State and Celtic Invitational. The 2011 team managed to beat over 450 teams this season, capture Belen’s 30th District Title and 15th Regional FHSAA Titles. Elliot Clemente also won the Florida State Championship in Dade City, helping to lead Belen to its 6th State Championship. The top 5 scoring just 26 points at the State Meet were Elliot Clemente (1), Avery Lopez (4), Michael Magoulas (5), Fabian Tomas (6) and Frankie Tejidor (10). These statement-making wins helped them earn as high as a 6th in-season spot in the National Rankings by Dyestat and XCNation. com. The 7-runner squad was led by Senior, Elliot Clemente, running a new Belen school record 5K in 14:58 at the Nike NXN Regional Championship in Cary, North Carolina. The team’s Regional Championship win earned them a spot for an all-expense paid trip to compete at the Nike NXN National Championship in Portland, Oregon where they finished in 20th place.

This past 2011 season could be considered great to some and to others, exactly what was expected from us. We started off in spring of 2011 in the hardest football district in the United States. Lots of people doubted us and predicted that we would go 0-4 in the district. Belen and playoffs weren’t even put in the same sentence. After a couple of defeats in the spring and preseason games, we knew we had a lot to prove to ourselves, our families, our fans, and of course our detractors. The first district test was against Homestead where we dominated with ease due to our coaches and our disciplined team. After that win, as a team I think we knew we could compete with anyone. We then rolled over our next district opponent Carol City. Two weeks later Miami Dade’s strongest and most successful football program the Northwestern Bulls paid a visit to De la Cruz stadium. Predictions had us losing by 3 touchdowns. But the one thing I vividly remember was Coach Stuart preaching throughout practice was ‘’football is a game of momentum. We will not have the momentum the entire game but when we do we have to use it to our advantage. We will fight all four quarters and we will win.” And that is exactly what we did. Being down 28-7 at the beginning of the third quarter momentum shifted our way. The come back we made was indescribable and the win was even sweeter. We made national news and let all of America know that Wolverines will never quit. Miami Central was our next huge district game and that game had to be the best offensive performance Belen has had in years. One word summed up the offense that night; UNSTOPPABLE. When the dust settled the Wolverines lost a heartbreaking 59-56 four overtime thriller. We finished off the season strong with two wins over Pace and Fort Lauderdale Stranahan and qualified for the State Playoffs for the 7th straight year and 11th time in the past 12 years. The 2011 season brought out the competitive spirit and tenacity of the Wolverines to never quit until the clock reads zero. We played with God and intensity in our hearts and formed a brotherhood that will last forever.

We had a good season, because of our hard work. The team finished in second place at the district championships and came in fourth place at the regional championships falling just a bit short of our goal, reaching states as a team. Oscar Cabanas really steped up to the forefront. He finished in second at the district championship and regional Championship, with those results he earned the right to compete in the state championship. He also made The Miami Herald First Team All County roster. The JV golf team had a great season going undefeated with a record 6-0. The team’s season was highlighted by victories over rivals Gulliver and Ransom Everglades. The team was led by Joaquin Trigueros and Danny Perez with average scores per round of 40.8 and 41.2 respectively. Pedro Gomez, Andrew Powell, Walter Tomasino, Miguel Torres de Navarra, and Matthew Murphy alo turned in fine performances.

This season for the varsity lacrosse team was a year of rebuilding and growth. After graduating the entire midfield group from last season and suffering several early season injuries to key players, the team had to rely on a large number of first time varsity players that were expected to produce immediately and did so admirably. Facing a very difficult schedule (both in and out of district) the team battled hard and was extremely athletic and gutsy. Our attack was once again the focal point of the offense with Robby Cosio leading the team in overall points and Ethan Rodriguez, Patrick Arrojo, and Edwin Ricardo all producing very similar point totals. The defense was led by Axel Gonzalez in the goal and the strong play of Matt Cristobal, Nick Leonard, Matt Diaz, and Michael Muñoz. Tri-captain Mikey Rodriguez was the inspirational leader of both the team and his midfield unit.

The season had many ups and downs. We had too many injuries that caused us to keep making changes to the formation throughout the season. What got us through was the excellent bond the players had for each other. The team also benefited from the variety of 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th graders on the team. This gives us hope for great things to come in the future. I would like to congratulate the entire team for being responsible and commited to the training as well as their tenacity in the games. It also gives me great pride that all of our accomplishments are done with home grown players that do the best that they can. The Wolverines welcomed into the district new tougher teams which raised the level of competition like American, Homestead and Miami Springs. Only the top four teams from the season advanced into the District Tournament. The Wolverines came into the tournament seeded third and were able to upset Homestead 1-0 with a goal by Captain Jose Scheuren. The final pitted Belen versus the top seed American. The Wolverines took the lead right before halftime with a goal by Eduardo Valle. In the second half belen gave up two goals to lose the district championship game. Even with the loss Belen advanced into the playoffs where they faced Ft. Lauderdale whom they easily defeated by the score of 3-0 with goals from Fernando de Caralt and Jose Scheuren. In the second round Belen got a rematch with American and once again took the lead with a goal by Carlos Acevedo in the first half, but Belen was unable to hold the and fell 2-1 ending their season.

Belen Jesuit’s swim team had another successful season this fall as we went 4-1 during the regular season. The season had many highlights. We opened up against Doral and Key West, winning each meet by a commanding eighty points. Manny Lopez, Julian Ballestas, Juan Perez-Costa, and Boleck de Pawlikowski all earning their first individual victories of the season. The second meet of the season was the Miami Dade County Youth Fair where the meet came down to the last event, the 400 free relay. Boleck de Pawlikowski, Jose Alvarez, Julian Ballestas and Manny Lopez brought home the gold and edged the powerhouse Palmetto by only eight points. Against Pine Crest the boys of Belen swimming came up short in their only loss for the season. Finishing up the regular season, the junior varsity and varsity joined up and defeated Archbishop McCarthy by an overwhelming ninety points.

Belen traveled to Palm Beach for it’s district competition. We won decisively with a 499-328 score and 90% of the team swam fast enough to move onto the regional competition.

In Fort Myers, the Wolverines came up to one of the toughest, and closest regional competitions in recent history making it’s streak seven in a row. Everyone contributed to the victory, but only eight boys moved onto states. Jose Alvarez, Julian Ballestas, Evan Banciella, Boleck de Pawlikowski, Christian Gomez, Ryan Guso, Manny Lopez, and Juan Perez-Costa comprised the state team for the 2011 season.

Knowing it was a rebuilding year, our eight boys went to the State competition in Orlando, FL ready to compete for another State Championship but fell a bit short finishing the season in fourth place in the state. Julian Ballestas found the podium twice with a 2nd place in the 200 freestyle which was an Automatic All-American time, and 3rd place in the 100 freestyle.

We want to send a special thank you to all of the swimmers, junior varsity and varsity for an outstanding year. None of this would have been possible without the support of our parent volunteers: Steve Avallone, Miguel Basalo, Miriam Guso, Patty Lopez and many others were tremendous this year. Thank you all.

The 2012 Wolverines tennis team again rose to the occasion by winning their third straight district title. The Wolverines fought a hard campaign marred by rain, a match called due to darkness and injuries to starters but finally captured every singles title and the second doubles title at districts at Moore Park. #1 singles champ Juan Lorido earned his third straight trip to states for his dramatic three-hour victory at districts. Senior captain Albert Perez overcame a difficult ankle injury to return to form and coupled with his brother Christian to play #2 doubles. The future is bright with 2nd year starters Bryan Rodriguez, William Lorenzo also capturing championships. The Wolverines ended their 2012 season 9-2 and maintain their core starters for a powerful 2013 team.

The Track and Field program was the State Champions for about 30 minutes this year. We held a one point lead going into the last event of the State Championship the 4x400 M. Unfortunately we had no team competing in the event and fell to a very repectable 4th place by 9 points. That was the story of the year falling just a little short. We got 2nd in Districts by 2 points and 3rd in Regional by 1 point, where the winners tied for first. Through it all the kids believed, kept working hard and stayed the course. It would have been easy to just quit but they chose to keep fighting and trying. The kids performed amazingly well the last three weeks of the season. We are very proud of the efforts and sacrifices made by them in order to reach the ultimate team goal. A state title.

From the begining we knew this was going to be a difficult year, we had an entire new district that includes some of the top teams in the state. The the team had fun playing and did well. The highlight of our season came when we got 2nd place at the Florida Invitational Tournament. We had a winning record of 13-12 and just missed making the district tournament. We are going to miss our seniors Alex, Ricky, Jon-Michael, David and Louis very much and thank them for always supporting team. When they began playing 2 to 3 years ago most of them no idea how to play volleyball but with persistence and a willing attitude they learned to play volleyball at a high level.

Team Recognition: District Champions

The Belen water polo team finished the season with a record of 16 wins and 5 losses. They earned a 4th consecutive district title by defeating Ransom Everglades by the score of 15-6. They also went on to defeat arch rival Columbus by the score of 13-9, St. Thomas, and a highly contested game against Boca High. First year head coach Jimmy Aguilera and new assistant coach Lazaro Fernandez led the team to a fine record and a very promising future. The team’s season ended when it suffered a loss at the first round play-in game to the eventual state champion Gulliver Prep. Losing starter Jake Guso early in the game proved costly to the Wolverines as they held a 2 to 1 lead at the time.

Leading the Wolverines were juniors Jake Guso with 84 season goals and Herzen Cortes with 83 goals. Sophomores Santiago Nuñez had 31 goals and Ryan Guso recorded 177 blocks. The team also had a fifth place finish at the DeSmet Invitational in Missouri .

Esteban

It was a year of built experience for the wrestling team. The team competed in tournaments filled with the best teams in Florida as well as other states such as Georgia and West Virginia. The team took this experience and had good showings throughout the season but suffered unfortunate results in the post season. Many of the wrestlers wrestled to their potential and will most likely have positive results in years to come. For the wrestlers Randy Mompremier and Esteban Gomez-Rivera their seasons and careers had successful endings. Mompremier who in the past two years came a match short of the state championship was finally able to punch his ticket to the big show. Despite a tough draw wrestling the eventual runner-up in the first round he was able to wrestle back and was just one match short of placing. For Gomez-Rivera it was a year of redemption. After splitting the state championship his sophomore and junior year with rival Jared Browning he found himself in the finals of the state championship once again with Browning. In the final match between these familiar foes there was no lack of excitement with Gomez-Rivera winning the match in the final seconds to reclaim the state championship. The following day Gomez-Rivera competed in the first ever all classification state championship and came away with gold once again. With both state qualifiers graduating the team looks forward to developing the young talent left on the team to continue its winning tradition.

The JV season can best be classified as a season of streaks, we proved to ourselves that when we play at the level that we are capable of playing we can compete against anybody, and it showed during our streaks where we defeated and lost to the same opponents. We played a lot better at our home field where we only suffered two losses all year. I am very encouraged by the future of our program because there cannot be another group of kids that genuinely care for each other the way this group did. I saw a lot of guys competing for the same spots working together and encouraging each other to do better. I saw a lot of leadership by different guys on this team, I saw it at practice, games, or just getting water ready for a road game, whatever situation came up I always felt we pulled in the same direction. The respect shown to us coaches by the kids all the time made us proud to wear the Belen uniform wherever we went. I am extremely grateful and proud of the talents of many of our players and for the way the represented themselves, their families, their faith and their unselfish concern for each other. The junior varsity basketball team accomplished another very successful season, finishing with a record of 16-5, with three freshman and ten sophomores all playing together for the first time. The team played relentless pressure defense and fast break oriented offense which enabled them to outscore their opponents by an average of 19 points per game. Season highlights included impressive wins over Norland, Miami Central, Northwestern and Felix Varela.

Andres Perez, Jonathan Herrera, Michael Vega-Sanz, E.J. Cruz and Matthew Fernandez were outstanding in scoring, steals, defense and assists. Frank Battle, Michael Diaz-Silveira and Alejandro Portela provided strong rebounding and interior defense. Louis Giordano and William Candela were instrumental contributing in all aspects of the game. Notable contributions were turned in by Nicholas Fernandez, Julio Palomera, and Jose Smith. This team was very dedicated, worked extremely hard and were very disciplined and unselfish.

The 2011-2012 JV football season was another exciting season. The team finished with a record of 5-1. After suffering their only loss to Monsignor Pace, the players came back strong to finish out the season with three consecutive wins, which included a great game against St. Thomas Aquinas. The offense was anchored by quarterback Jorge Pola and sophomore offensive linemen Lucas Yubero, Marlon Seijo, and Juan Garcia. Offensively the team was able to do some remarkable things such as scoring 87 points in the huge win over Key West. Defensively, the team was led by sophomores Kevin Pascual, EJ Cosculluela, Sammy Maya, Jorge Reyes, and freshman linebacker Mariano Macias. The defense shutout 3 opponents and came up with plenty of turnovers to give the team great field position in every game. The entire team showed great toughness all year long and never backed down from any challenge presented to them.

The JV lacrosse team was a team that never quit and improved dramatically from the start to the end. Once again, the JV team consisted of a large group of guys that had either never played the sport or where not yet game tested. The team worked very hard with a young coaching staff and nearly pulled off wins against teams with long-time programs. The season was highlighted by two big wins over the Columbus JV team, both occurring on the Columbus home field. The team will return with a large number of experienced players next season and those moving up to varsity will be contributors early on. The team was led in scoring by Carlos Rosell and the defense was led by goalie Anthony Martin and the defense of Oscar Vila, Brandon Hevia, and Henry Alvarez. At the midfield Jordi Fernandez was spectacular on faceoff’s and Michael Chang was a work horse.

JV soccer has a bright future ahead of them. Several starters were moved up to varsity where they were key players and earned a staring position. Other players such as Jorge Powell leading scorer, Juan Barrero who controlled midfield and Jonathan Alvarez who had a great season as goalie were key players to the success of the team. The team started the season strong but was plagued with many injuries. A roster that began with 24 players was dwindled down to 13 and was replenished with middle school players to finish the season. This team although young had several key victories such as wins over Columbus and Ransom, two arch rivals. Imagine what this group of young boys can do when they really are JV players.

The future for the soccer program looks great. We have a great group of kids coming back next year which will be the envy of any program in our district.

We were undefeated versus teams that are on our district, we beat the likes of Columbus, Coral Park, Palmetto, and Southwest. These are some of the best programs in the state. We also won the Silver Bracket at the Sunset Invitational tournament. We finished the season with a record of 15-6. This group of players look to have a promising future. Most of the JV players were on our WOLFPACK volleyball Club at Belen so we are having an excellent base for Belen volleyball in the future. The team did all this despite suffering the loss of the team captain Andres Hidalgo, who was sidelined with a diagnosis of Leukemia, towards the end of the season. In a show of support all players wrote on their arms S.S.A.H. (Stay Strong Andres Hidalgo). We will keep praying for his speedy recovery and now I say S.S. Belen.

This year’s freshmen team had a great season winning thirteen games and having only lost one. The players grew together as a team showing that the future is bright for the baseball program. With a lot of hard work, this talented group of players defeated great programs such as Florida Christian and Braddock. We were led by Andres Fernandez and Willy Sanchez who were the two most efficient hitters. Between both of them they hit a .460 average with ten doubles, four triples and thirty-eight RBIs. As a team we had a great year, our team average was .380 with thirty doubles, ten triples, fifty-two base on balls and ninety RBIs. Another instrumental part to our great season was our pitching, which was lights out. Our pitching staff was led by Lorenzo Laurita and Alex Nova. Together they had a record of 13-1 with seventy-seven innings pitched, with an ERA of 2.20, seventy-eight strikeouts and only thirty-four walks. One of the highlights of our season was witnessing Lorenzo Laurita pitch a perfect game against South Dade. Keep a close eye on the baseball program in the coming years, it is going to be very exciting with great stories to be made.

The 2011-2012 Belen freshman basketball team can best be described in one word: resilient. Finishing a challenging schedule with an overall record of seven wins and six defeats that included four losses by a total of 11 points, the Wolverines bounced back time and again. Led by leading scorer Guillermo Vadell and the hard-nosed hustling play of frontcourt players such as Carlos PerezHeydrich, Marcos Perez, and Joseph Ordonez, the freshman squad stayed competitive until the very end through most of its games. The team’s spirit and unselfish play were evident throughout the season and made for lively and entertaining games. Exhibiting the best qualities of sportsmanship, the freshman Wolverines proudly represented the school wherever they played.

The gold squad began the season with a hard fought loss to Doral Academy and since then did not look back. They reeled off 22 consecutive victories to end the season with an impressive record of 22-1. The team was the All-Catholic Conference (ACC) Champions, as well as the champions of the Inaugural South Florida Middle School Baseball League which included 8 teams each from Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. The baseball program is in great shape with this group of student athletes, and the program is excited for what the future has in store.

The middle school blue team had a successful season as they ended up in 2nd place in their division in the All-Catholic Conference (ACC), and qualified for the championship round of the Inaugural South Florida Middle School League. The squad competed in the newly formed league and did not disappoint competing with the older teams in the league. The league comprised of 8 teams each in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. The players progressed nicely and the future for the Belen baseball program looks promising.

Undefeated. The middle school gold basketball team accomplished a tremendous feat finishing the season with a perfect 22-0 record. The team posted the best regular season record and won the championship in the ACC playoffs. The team used their relentless pressure defense and balanced scoring attack to beat their opponents by an average of 24 points. Season highlights included victories over Epiphany and a victory over a very talented Coral Springs middle in which the team overcame a 12-0 deficit to win by 3, their only victory by a single digit margin. This talented and deep team was led by, Daniel Romeu , a dominating force inside leading the team in scoring, and Armand Del Castillo as the floor leader and second leading scorer. Steve Marin, Johnny Powell and Giancarlo Pinto provided great guard play and tenacious defense. Luis Mejer and Joey Seara provided a strong contribution with their two-way versatility, both inside and out. Gabriel Cabrera, Mario Robaina, Christopher Jauregui, Daniel Sixto, Nicholas Roca and Daniel Mejia all played a crucial role off the bench providing energy and the skills needed to wear down its opponents. This was as an enjoyable group of kids as I’ve ever coached. Cohesive, ambitious, hard working and fun the team belongs in the record books as one of 3 middle school teams in modern history to go undefeated. Belen Jesuit has a rich basketball tradition, and the junior high program is a big reason why. These are the players that will become future Belen basketball stars. As a coach it’s a great opportunity to be part of the molding process of these players. We are very lucky to have this system in place, where we can have not one but two very good basketball teams at the junior high level. This year’s middle school blue basketball team had a record of 13 wins and 4 losses. They were also ACC division champions. The team was comprised of four eighth graders, and eight seventh graders. Even though they were a young team, the combination of seventh and eighth graders resulted in a very successful season. The four tough losses the team suffered were against Epiphany, St. Timothy, and St. Kevin. I mention this because the team was able to bounce back from these losses and defeat each of these teams during the season. The future looks bright for Belen basketball. I would like to thank the players for their hard work during the season, and I want to wish them all the best. Audacity has been the theme for the middle school cross country program. The word took a whole new meaning this season. Our season began at Ransom with a 18 to 43 loss to the host school, they had three runners in front of our number one runner and five in front of our number 2. This caused the team to work even harder if they were to compete for the Dade County championship. Two weeks later we got to see how much improvement we made by racing Ransom again at the Flrunners.com Invitational, much to my surprise we had not improved as we lost again this time 26 to 50. Right after the race I gathered the runners and I challenged them. From this point they could either give up and live with the decision that there was no way of beating Ransom or make a decision to have the audacity to be great. I told them that it wasn’t going to be easy but I believed that they could do it if they believed and fought for it. Our next meeting would take place in three weeks. Through heat, humidity, rain, mud the kids worked hard to get better. The day of the Dade County meet they performed with the audacity expected from a Belen runner. They took off hard and never looked back, the Wolverines won their 16th county championship. The program made history that day as Belen won all four cross country Dade County Championships, two in the high school and two in the middle school. I am so proud of this group for taking the challenge to heart and believing that anything is possible. The team went on to win the ACC, Tri-County and Catholic State Championships.

Team Record: 0-6

The 8th grade team improved to 5 wins and 3 losses this season. Most notable, were the great victories against Ransom Everglades, Westminster Christian, and Plantation American Heritage. The outstanding defense was lead by Manrique Iriarte, Sebastian Leiter, Gio Menocal, Danny Portuondo, and Carlos Rodriguez. Our potent offense which scored 156 points this season was lead by Jean Zamora, Pablo Venegas, Danny Hondal, Joe Garcia, Mario Robaina, and Giancarlo Pinto.

The 7th grade football team played hard in every game, but came out on the losing end primarily due to playing exclusively 8th grade teams. The offense had outstanding leadership with Lucas Pola as quarterback and Frankie Menendez and Javi Hernandez as our outstanding wings along with Matthew Bravo as an excellent tight end. The defense was anchored by the excellent linebacking core of Stefano Santamaria, Carlos Valderrama, and Michael Prado.

Diego Puig-Corve led the team with 6 goals and 5 assists; John Powell 6 goals and 1 assist, Daniel Sarmiento 5 goals and 1 assist, Lucas Gomez 5 goals, Tavish Rice 4 goals and 4 assists. Captains Anthony Castro and Fernando Pujals contributed with 4 goals and 2 goals respectively. The players played at a high level the whole season and showed a lot of promise for the future. Middle school Wolverines faced the 2011 swim season with a tremendous amount of adversity. As the favorites to win another Youth Fair Championship, the team was met by extremely hungry competitors. Achieving second place finishes in two multi team events and an undefeated duel meet record, the young Wolverines lived up to the stellar middle school swimming reputation Belen has earned over the past few years. This season’s success came from the driving competitive atmosphere at every team practice, rain or shine, the Wolverines trained like true athletes. The seventh grade talent boosted the scoring ability of the team to a level that achieved second place at the Youth Fair Championship. The coaching staff truly looks forward to a competitive 2012 season. Go Wolverines!

The middle school Wolverine tennis team again brings the youth this year, with solid players who tend toward the lower grades. Returning starter Eduardo Scheuren rose to play number one and filled that role admirably. Newcomers Sebastian Duenas, Daniel Tormo and Charlie Grande moved into 2-4 while Andres Balcazar made huge strides from last year to play #5. The team defeated tough Ransom Everglades and Westminster Christian while losing close matches against Gulliver and Doral Academy. The youth of the middle school tennis team will serve Belen very well into the future.

We had some rising stars, in the 100m Hurdles Francisco Odon and Carlos Diaz. Kevin Valdez had a productive season, always place in the top 3 in all his events. In the 400m dash we had Daniel Mejia, Matthew Bravo and Nicolas Senior. On the distance side Jaime Lopez, Jorge Gomez and Rodrigo Bustamante put up a fight with the best of them, and continued to train towards the middle school Regional and State meets. Joshua Collins and Eloy Fernandez are the future of the Wolverines. The tradition of strong, talented runners continues among us, and we look forward to more of their success.

The middle school team had an excellent season and finished with a record 12-2. In the process we won the ACC tournament and the ACC divisional title. The team was made up of a very strong core that included Sebastian Paoli who as captain gave security in setting and serving with amazing aces. Also lefty outside hitter Christopher Jauregui had great spikes. I’m very proud that the team was able defend their ACC titles with the support of everybody. Every one on the the team performed their jobs to perfection of defending, attacking and supporting each other. Joey, Julio, Pablo, Albert, Alessandro, Gabriel, Edel, Jonathan, Arman and Daniel had excellent practices. I would like to thank the support of the families for attending the games and being great fans. Congrats middle school volleyball.

The middle school water polo season began on the 30th of January 2012, we had try outs for all that came. Out of the tryouts this year we had 15 players that stayed the whole year, of the 15 players 7 had never played before and 8 had some experience.

The season went out according to plan, what we had planned to do came to fruition. With the kids giving their best in practice and more importantly in games, the Wolverines won the Middle School Championship hosted by Ransom to finish the year on top. We would like to thank the students, parents and the entire school staff for their unconditional support this year.

6TH GRADE BASEBALL

Although the 6th grade middle school baseball team fell short of the ultimate goal. The squad progressed and gained valuable experience throughout the season. The team participated in 2 pre-season tournaments, the Thanksgiving Holiday Tournament and New Year’s Day Bash. They showed great promise for the Belen baseball program for years to come. Thanks to timely hitting and pitching the young Wolverines were extremely competitive and finished in 2nd place in the All-Catholic Conference (ACC).

6TH GRADE BASKETBALL

This year’s 6th grade basketball team finished 8-2. We started off the season strong winning three straight and then lost two close games to Epiphany and Our Lady of Lourdes. We bounced back to win our final five games which included wins over Epiphany and Our Lady of Lourdes. The team had a very balanced attack because of how well the guys shared the ball and trusted each other, and defensively they played a high pressure full court defense that caused a lot of turnovers. It was an honor and a joy to coach such a great group, and it was encouraging to see how well they played together and represented the school. Belen’s basketball class of 2018 looks promising. It is up to the players to continue to love the game and dedicate themselves to improving individually and as a team. I would like to thank the parents and all the coaches for their support. Also, a huge thank you to Vince for everything he did and does for 6th grade basketball and Belen basketball in general. I have to especially thank Coach Bravo, who handed me the reigns to the 6th grade basketball team, and trusted and guided me the whole way. Last but not least, a big thank you to the players for loving the game, and a great season.

Like the wise sage once said, “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.” The sixth grade team is very similar to that quote, much to my delight when the box was opened it was full of Lindt chocolates. It didn’t take long for the team to mesh. This talented group sent a loud and clear message right from the start that they were going to be a force to be reckoned with throughout the year. At the start of the season I had to keep emphasizing to these kids that practices were not races and that they should learn to run together. It took a while but by mid season they began to follow instructions and work as a group to get better. The improvements made by all the runners by the end of the year was amazing. This group was mainly responsible for winning the JV middle school Dade County Championship, a race which was half a mile longer for the 6th graders who usually run 1.5 miles. History was made that day as the program won all four races in the Dade County Championships. The team won the school’s 9th ACC Championship. They also won the Tri-County Championship with all five runners on the top seven sports to finish the season strong. This was a good start but the best is yet to come. A big thank you to all the parents and fans who are always so supportive of the program. You are truly the team behind the team.

It was a great way to start their careers for this group of 6th graders. They went undefeated in the All Catholic Conference winning their division. Their success is based on their fantastic performances, where good technique and physical conditioning were key factors. Alfred Perez and Juan Pereira helped lead the offense with amazing striking proficiency that helped the Wolverines score an amazing 62 goals for the season. As we always do, this is what we will see as the core of our program years down the line. The next 6 years will be in preparation to hopefully play for a State Championship. It’s a long road where perseverance, discipline and hard work will be the ingredients to be state champions.

Advice to Athletes: “There is no worse feeling than knowing you could have done better if you would have worked harder....Suffice it to say, I missed out on a lot of parties, events and even Tombola. I made this sacrifice because I wanted to walk away from my swimming career with the feeling that I couldn’t have worked any harder. Whether that meant being an All American or never winning a race, I finished my swimming career satisfied that I went as far as I was going to go. Hard work brings greater results and satisfaction.”
