All of you have made great sacrifices and tried to be the best at your favorite sport, to the greater glory of God. On behalf of your coaches, teachers and the administration, congratulations on your perseverance, sportsmanship, and desire to excel during the 2010-2011 season.

The Jesuit spiritual tradition inspires us to seek God in all things and sports is no exception. Healthy competition brings out the best in you as you try to achieve success. The effort required to be the best in sports trains you to pursue excellence in your own personal lives and in your future professions. We are proud of the Belen student athletes!

May the Lord continue to inspire each of you to excel in your lives, not only as athletes but also in academics and in service to others. May Our Lady of Belen, the Mother of God, help you to be better “men for others,” both now and in the future.

A MESSAGE FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Our 2010-2011 sports program had another outstanding season. The Belen Jesuit athletic program once again finished among the top 2 overall athletic programs in Florida according to the FHSAA. Belen has now finished among the top 2 schools in the State of Florida for each of the past 3 years in our classification. Excellence in sports was not only achieved by the majority of our varsity teams, but also by many of our student athletes and coaches.

The varsity swimming team recorded an unprecedented fifth Consecutive State Championship. Carlos Omaña took first in two individual events and also helped anchor two winning relays in the State Championships. Omaña also became a Junior National Champion in the 400 individual medley, accomplishing this feat while setting a new national record in the event. He was also selected by the Florida Coaches Association as Mr. Swimmer, the best swimmer in Florida regardless of classification. Andres Vazquez and Julian Ballestas each won individual events in State Championships and swam in two winning relays. Junior Elliot Clemente led the Wolverine cross country team to their fourth state title in 5 years. Clemente, was also a FootLocker National finalist. Nick Menocal signed a full football scholarship with Georgia Tech. Wrestler Esteban Gomez-Rivera finished as a State runner up in the 119 lb. weight class.

Other milestones achieved by Belen Jesuit in sports were first time appearances at the State Championships by our soccer, golf and tennis teams. The crew team earned three gold and two bronze medals in their State Championships.

Of the 13 State sanctioned sports by the FHSAA in which Belen Jesuit participates. The Wolverines had two state champions in cross country and swimming, four regional champions, seven district champions, three district runners-ups and one regional runner-up.

Among our coaches Frankie Ruiz in cross country and Kirk Peppas in swimming were chosen as Florida Athletic Coaches Association Coach of the Year.

In the academic front 12 out of our 13 varsity teams made it to the FHSAA Academic Team Champion competition, with football finishing first in their class. The top 5 academically ranked seniors in our school participated in athletics. Our Miami Herald Scholar-Athlete nominee was Joseph Lindsay, who is a National Merit Finalist.

Our middle school program continues to be one of the best overall program in Miami Dade County.

NEW PROJECTS:

In baseball: The addition of an exercise room, added storage space, canopies in the bleacher area and a net in right field are all in the planning phases. A new olympic size swimming pool will replace the old Gian Zumpano swimming pool. Plans for the development of the Northwest lot are being made. The development of this piece of land will give us much needed green areas for our teams to practice. The possibility of a new synthetic surface for our football/soccer stadium is being considered.

Team Record: 16-11

Team Recognition: District Runner-Up

The Wolverine varsity baseball team had another successful season. The Wolverines finished 2011 with a record of 16 and 11. Big wins came against teams such as Westminster Christian, 2 time defending state champions, district rival, Key West and nationally ranked, Gulliver. The team became the first in the school’s history to play a game at Sun Life Stadium, home of the Florida Marlins where they upset Gulliver Prep in a dramatic fashion. The Wolverines were led on offense by senior first baseman Sheehan Planas-Arteaga who came close to the school record of nine homeruns with seven of his own. Also, tearing up the base paths was junior outfielder Joey Rodriguez who successfully swiped 25 bases, breaking the school record. Senior pitcher Robert Baroniel also played a big role in the team’s success by attaining a record of 8-3. The team looks forward to building on this year’s success in the 2012 season.

VARSITY BASKETBALL

est. 1923

The varsity basketball team advanced into the regional tournament for the eighth year in a row. Although the team’s record was 13 wins and 15 losses, six of those losses were by 3 points or less. Notable accomplishments included defeating Key West twice within a two week period to secure the school’s sixth consecutive district runner-up trophy. The team posted key victories against Miami Central, John A. Ferguson, Westminster Christian, and Felix Varela throughout the season. The team also participated in the Kreul Classic in Coral Springs and the St. Pius X National Catholic Tournament in Atlanta.

The Wolverines were led by Manuel Sicre with 12 points, 4 rebounds, 3.2 steals, and 3 assists per game, Aurelio Leyva with 9 points per game, and Nicholas Botero with 8 points and 4 rebounds per game. Other key seniors included Brendan Gray with 6 points and 4 rebounds per game, Antonio Ucar with 6 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocks per game, Jordan Blecher with 4.5 points per game, and Edmond Benedetti with 4 points per game. Michael Fernandez and Emmanuel Noya were the spark plugs off the bench, while Ricardo Fernandez, Danny Admire and Alex Pis-Dudot contributed to the team’s success on a daily basis.

For our varsity crew, 2011 was a year of unprecedented speed, commitment, and discipline. Armed with a new coaching staff and determined athletes, Belen Crew took their speed to the end, winning States in firstfor-school 4 entries! At the time of this writing, Belen Crew continues to train to take home a Gold at Scholastic National Championships in New Jersey.

For the JV crew, 2011 was a year of unprecedented speed. Discipline and hard training made for a year packed with consistent personal record broken that culminated in a gold medal performance by the Freshman 4 at States. With most of our freshman team consisting of 8th graders, 2012 is sure to be an even faster season. At the time of this writing, Belen Crew continues to train to take home a Gold at Scholastic National Championships in New Jersey. Congratulations boys.

Back on course! The 2010 team was determined to put Belen Cross Country back on the winner’s podium at the State Championship this season. After finishing Runner-Up last year and falling a bit short of the program’s 5th State Title, these guys wanted to leave their mark. They put their focus on every stride of the over 1,000 miles they cover during their summer and regular season training and paid close attention to improving their pack running strategy after every meet during the season. Most of the season this team flew under the radar when it came to the FACA State Rankings, however, they controlled the one ranking that actually mattered and that was the final one at the finish line of the FHSAA State Championship held at Dade City’s Little Everglades Ranch. The team took the field by surprise by working as ONE TEAM to aggressively score an impressive low score of 50 points over Charlotte High School’s 92 points. The pack of all-gold uniforms was led by Elliot Clemente (who finished 2nd overall and was Miami-Dade County’s fastest finisher), followed by Joseph Lindsay, Fabian Tomas, Avery Lopez, Branden Martinez, Michael Magoulas and Peter Jude. The team now leaves its winning mark in history and could make another great one in 2011 since it had only one senior in the top 7. The 2010 season was topped off by Elliot Clemente’s accomplishment of qualifying for Footlocker Nationals by setting a new school record of 15:03 at the Footlocker Regional Meet.

The varsity football team had an amazing season finishing 10-3, becoming District 3A Champions for the second season in a row. The team started the season with “unfinished business” and what a way to begin. Their preseason opening game was against Delray Beach American Heritage when they beat them 29-21. Way to come out strong! The highlights throughout the season included more victories over Hollywood Hills, Gulliver, Hialeah Gardens, Plantation American Heritage, Mater Academy, Glades Day, Norland, Westland Hialeah, and Jackson. Despite the many wins, our season did come with some setbacks. The annual game against longtime rival, the Columbus Explorers, was the first defeat the team would face, with a final score of 16-35. The Wolverine’s other loss was University School and our last loss would be against Norland when we played them for a second time in the playoffs.

The Class of 2011 should feel nothing but pride as they finished the season strong. They pushed the team through the tough times and while they may not have finished all of their business, they led the team to their 10-3 season.

The coaching staff would also like to commend our parents for their undying support and devotion throughout the season. They have shown, once again, that the Wolverines have the best fans of any high school football team.

As a first year varsity coach, I found a solid group of young men who wanted to work hard and make a difference. As a coach, I was extremely proud of our players all season but in particular at the State Tournament where several parents from other teams and coaches approached me to compliment our players’ behavior out in the field. This team’s goal was to make it to the state tournament and we can proudly say we achieved this goal-a first in the school’s history. We look forward to the opportunity of bringing very soon a State Championship to Belen!! Thank you players and the support of great parents!!!

The JV team had major wins against archrival Gulliver. All three losses were close matches against Archbishop McCarthy. The team was led by Frankie Smith and Danny Perez with avg. scores of 41.3 and 41.8 for 9 holes. Also contributing with fine play were Walter Tomasino, Pedro Gomez, Steven Vega, and Miguel Torres de Navarra.

The 2011 lacrosse season was the first year that the Wolverines participated in the FHSAA (last season we played in the Florida Club League). Although the competition was more difficult than in previous years, the Wolverines finished the season with a winning record (8-7) and missed playing in the district championship tournament by only one goal. The team was highly competitive and the bar for next season has already been set. Eight members of the team where recognized on the All District teams and four seniors will participate in the Dade/Broward Senior All Star Game.

From the start their goal was not to just win districts, but to go farther than any team had ever gone before. With their commitment and hard work, the soccer team would complete their historic run. With a strong senior class and determined underclassmen, the team won back-to-back district championships. During regionals they dramatically won all three games in overtime. The regional quarterfinal was against Archbishop McCarthy. The Wolverines went down a goal early, but Gabriel Mion equalized shortly after and Sebastian Duque scored in the first 20 seconds of overtime. The Regional Semifinal against nationally ranked Pembroke Pines Charter, was a hard fought game with excellent saves form goalkeeper Daniel Mion. After a few close calls, junior Juan Pablo Cobian scored in overtime. In the regional final, the Wolverines, proved victorious once again, as Gabriel Loret de Mola scored his second goal of the game with three minutes left in overtime, crowning the team Regional Champions for the first time in school history and sending them to States. The Wolverines, or Tangerines as they became known, traveled to the University of Tampa’s Pepin Stadium looking to continue their historic run. The opponents, Choctawhatchee, had won all three of their region games by scoring eighteen goals and conceding zero goals. In the first thirty seconds of the game, Choctaw scored on a penalty kick, which Daniel Mion almost blocked. The Tangerines conceded again twenty minutes into the game when a defensive mistake led to the second goal. They battled hard and dominated the rest of the game but just couldn’t get the ball into the back of the net. Even though they couldn’t go all the way, the varsity soccer team can proudly boast that they are the best soccer team in Belen history, being ranked at one point in the season as 37th in the Nation and 5th in Florida.

VARSITY TENNIS

The 2011 varsity tennis team made a strong claim on being the best team Belen has ever produced. Led by Captain Jose Lorido and fortified by a starting five that only lost one match all year, the Wolverines won their second consecutive district title and the school’s first ever regional championship. In that span, they had a 12 match winning streak and earned the school’s first ever appearance in states. Coming in 5th in the state in 3A tennis, the Wolverines had two appearances in the semi finals (Juan Lorido and Bryan Rodriguez) and a finalist (Raul Cruz). Only one Wolverine starter is graduating and three of the top five are in 9th and 10th grade. The future looks bright for next year as the Wolverine Tennis team enjoys the fruits of their very well-fought 2011 campaign.

Although our team was young, they maintained a high level of technical awareness. The season began and our inexperience showed through the early games, but with every game we improved and raised our game to compete with the best. After early loses to different teams, we would come back and return the favor. The highlight of the season came at the District Championship when John Amy hit the game winning goal over Ransom Everglades at their pool in overtime, avenging a loss earlier in the season to the Raiders at their place. The victory secured the Wolverine’s trip to the State Championship Tournament for the second time in school history. At the tournament Belen lost to the host Dr. Phillips by one goal in the opening round. This trip to the state tournament will serve as needed experience for the team as it stays on course for their quest of a State Championship.

JV BASKETBALL

The JV basketball team accomplished a very special feat, finishing the season with a perfect 20-0 undefeated record; with two freshmen and ten sophomores all playing together for the first time this year. The team played relentless pressure defense and fast break oriented scoring that enabled them to outscore their opponents by an average of 21 points per game.

Season highlights included key wins over Norland, Miami Central, Key West and Jackson. The most impressive win was defeating Columbus at F.I.U. by the score of 43 to 39, for only the second time in school history.

Eric Couto, Javi Alvarez, Jason Gutierrez, and Austin Riveron were instrumental in scoring, steals, and assists. Ryan Murphy, Guillermo Pujals and Christian Garcia provided strong rebounding and interior defense. Johnny Medina and Nicolas Iparraguirre, the only two freshmen on the team were outstanding contributing in all aspects of the game. Notable contributions were turned in by Jose Roca, Robbie Cosio and Hector Ortiz. This team worked extremely hard, was very disciplined and unselfish. The team’s dedication made it possible to finish the season a perfect 20-0.

The 2010-2011 JV football season was another very successful and exciting season. The team finished with a record of 5-1. The boys showed great work ethic and character starting back with the tough summer workouts, and it continued throughout the entire season. Despite many injuries suffered during the season, others were able to step right in and get the job done. Offensively the team averaged 25.5 points per game, while the defense held opponents to only 9.1 points a game with 3 shutouts. The team was led by a large group of veterans and many returning starters from last year’s team, which played a huge role in the team’s success. While we did not reach our ultimate goal of repeating with an undefeated season, the players really showed great toughness and became a true team when faced with adversity.

As lacrosse is such a new program here at Belen, each of the last three JV seasons has been a process of teaching the sport to newcomers. For the most part this season was similar, however, the results were the best we have ever had. The team won more games (4-6 in 2011 vs. 0-17 in the two previous seasons) and scored more goals (51 in 2011 vs. 30 total in the two previous seasons) than any JV team we have had in the past. The number of student-athletes that contributed to the team on game day was the best we have ever had in the program, and the future looks very bright for both the JV and the Varsity.

The Belen Jesuit JV soccer team, behind the coaching of Angelo Alessis, made a strong run in their season this year pulling a big 1 nil win over school rival Columbus High School. The team also took first place in the Archbishop McCarthy Tournament, with a 4-1 win in the Championship game. The team was led in scoring by Carlos Acevedo and Nick Lopez, in assists by Joseph Beguiristain and at the goal by Gabriel Lopez and Jonathan Alvarez. Although the JV level is for high school students, there were four eighth graders and a seventh grader that made great contributions to the team.

This year had its ups and downs due to a young team made up of primarily 8th and 9th grade players. It took some time but I think the kids learned a lot and really showed it during the end of the season. The record may not reflect it but this was a fantastic season and the future of Belen Volleyball looks bright!

The team played great throughout the entire season. For the first time ever we had 22 players on the team. Having a large amount of players proved to be very productive to everyone, as the numbers allowed for kids to practice with others at the same skill level. The team is young and very talented, and all players have what it takes to be very good in water polo, as long as they keep practicing and giving their best. Congrats on a great season.

Our freshman baseball team is one with great amount of heart. These guys are very much a part of Belen’s promising future. There was no game in which the freshman team forgot to give it their all. They were given hard tasks because they had to play mostly other JV teams. Despite losing every game, this team never forgot to show up and give it their all. Even at the end of the year when it was easy to give up, they fought hard to the end of every game. We should all be very proud of this team for always giving their all.

When describing the freshman basketball team, two operative words come to mind: teamwork and defense. The 2010 Wolverines relied upon these two qualities to enjoy a successful campaign that saw the team win eleven of its fourteen games. Throughout the season, the squad’s strength was built on tough defense that held all but one opponent under 50 points. Additionally, the contributions made by the regular rotation of ten, and often, all twelve players enabled the team to use its depth to wear down opponents. Notable achievements throughout the season included reaching the championship game of the North Broward Prep tournament, sweeping the season series with tough Broward foe St. Thomas Aquinas, and playing three epic defensive matches against powerful Christopher Columbus that included a dramatic victory at the Columbus gym. Standouts on the Wolverines included forward Andres Perez, the do-it-all captain who provided valuable scoring, defense, and rebounding; Nicholas Fernandez, a dynamic combination guard who led the team in scoring and gritty point guard Matthew Vega-Sanz, who effectively directed the offensive sets and defensive schemes. The 2010-2011 freshman squad proudly maintained the high standard of performance that has become expected of all Belen teams.

MS BASEBALL

The middle school gold baseball team is one to be very excited about. These boys came out this year and immediately you knew this team was something special. This team could pitch, field, and hit very well. Every player on this team could be a starter on any team. Every day they came out ready to play and get better. This team never took any other team for granted and gave it their all despite the competition. Unfortunately, they could not close out the last game to achieve an undefeated season but still this was a very successful season for the middle school gold team. Look out, the future is bright for Belen Baseball.

11-6-1 (6-2-1 ACC)

The middle school blue team has endured many tough games this year, facing some good competition throughout the conference as well as in the out of conference schedule. With all the hard work and hours of practice the team shined as it showed in their overall record (11-6-1), (6-2-1 ACC). The team really meshed together and is poised to make an impact in the years to come.

MS BASKETBALL

The middle school gold basketball team had a great start to their season winning the Pre-Season ACC tournament. The team posted the best regular season record in the ACC as well as finishing as the ACC Runner-Up in the playoffs. They finished with an overall record of 18-3. Brandon Leyva and Louis Giordano led the team with their passing and scoring, respectively. Carlos “Kiko” Perez-Heydrich and Brandon “Horse” Sylvestry provided a big spark off the bench with their high energy as well as their scoring punch. With great guard play from Danny Hernandez, London Duran, Mariano “Nano” Macias, and Andrew Powell, as well as post play, great rebounding and defense from Ignacio Perez, Andres Fernandez and Frank Battle, the gold team met their lofty expectations. The season was not one without adversity however, with multiple injuries and tough losses. This team was as resilient as I have coached, beating each team that they suffered a loss to, as well as grinding out an intense buzzer beating victory at Gulliver. The middle school gold team finished the year off strong going undefeated in the months of January and February. This has been my second season coaching the majority of these players and getting to know the new ones and it was a great experience with the players all willing to improve, play hard and most importantly have fun. We thank all the fellow coaches, parents, families, and fans for their support throughout the year.

The middle school blue basketball team was composed of twelve 7th graders and one 6th grader. The team had a record of 10 wins and 6 losses, but this record was not indicative of the success they truly had. The blue team defeated all their 7th grade only opponents including the last seven games of the season. The team’s losses were against teams composed of both 7th and 8th graders. Although the team was usually undersized, they used their quickness and tenacity to defeat their opponents. The team showed consistent improvement throughout the season and have tremendous promise for the future.

The Wolverine harriers had an up and down season. Led by Matthew MullinGarcia, Antonio Montadas, Jaime Lopez, Lorenzo Laurita, Bruno Zayas, Nicolas Roca, Dominic Wermuth and Andres Signoret the team’s highlights came at the prestigious flrunners.com where the Wolverines won the meet by one point, the Tri-County Championship and the Archbishop Carroll Invitational. The team also suffered some heartbreak losses at ACC, Catholic State and Dade County Youth Fair. Throughout the season the team worked hard and gave their best to represent the Belen banner. The future looks bright for the middle school cross country team as the 7th graders step up to the starting line next year. A big thanks to all the parents for their help. The 2011 middle school tennis team gives great hope for the future. Normally dominated by 8th graders, this year’s team had seven 6th graders earn their way onto the roster, including the talented Romare Gonzalez at #2 singles and Juan Rodriguez at #3. Alejandro Hasegawa gave 100% at every match at the #1 singles position while Michael Tefel, Luis Suarez and Iñigo Sagarduy represented the 8th grade in the remaining top positions. This year’s team finally was able to defeat rival Gulliver Prep, who handed the regional champion varsity team their only loss. With so many talented, young players waiting in the wings, tennis at Belen has a bright future.

This year’s middle school team consisted of skill and drive. The athletes learned about the importance of putting their best efforts forward and the real meaning of “teamwork.” The team was led by Brandon Silvestry, Frank Battle, Brandon Sierra, Antonio Montadas, Nick Peterson and Louis Giordano. Both Mark White and Fernando Molina earned rankings for discus. Karol Vargas and Guillermo Bogardus showed great leadership skills to enforce discipline and maintenance of a high level of performance. Closing the season on a positive note, the varsity boys were the ACC Champions.

We will miss all the 8th graders moving to high school and hope they continue to excel and apply what they learned this 2011 season.

The season started slow and then at the All Catholic Conference Tournament we hit a streak and made it all the way into the championship game. The team finished in 2nd place out of ten teams that participated. This turning point propelled the Wolverines to finish as runner-ups in the ACC regular season. All the players improved and made great contributions to the team’s success. Some of the players on this team are already being used as the building blocks for the future as four of them play on junior varsity team and a seventh grader helps out on the varsity team.

This year’s 6th grade basketball team went undefeated with a record of 10 – 0, and became ACC division champions. Seventy-four students attended tryouts back in August, to earn a spot on the 6th grade team. As you can see by the turn out, this is a big deal for the sixth graders and for me as well. It’s not easy telling a player he can’t be on the team. Sixteen players were finally selected, and from the get go I knew I had a special group. I’ve said this plenty of times, but I love coaching this age because the kids still listen, and you can see the love they have for the game, and how much they want to learn and get better. This team had that look and that drive to be better, and you saw it on the court. Their record speaks for itself. This was a special year for me also because my son was on the team, and it’s not often you get to coach your son at this level outside of Tamiami or Kendall Boys and Girls club. I would like to thank the parents and coaches for their support, and the players for loving the game, and a great season. Congratulations!

The new season brought all these individuals from different schools to run cross country for Belen Jesuit. The Wolverines worked hard and gave it their best and their efforts led to a 5th place finish at the All Catholic Conference Championship. The top five runners at the meet were Jordan Galvez, Michael Moreno, Joshua Lara, Brandon Torricella, and Javier Mederos. The team also went on to finish in 7th place at the Tri-County Championships. The 6th grade soccer team had a very memorable season as each player made many new friends. The players bonded very well with each other, which was evident by their disciplined teamwork. The 6th grade soccer team finished their season undefeated at 7-0-1 and they were recognized as the ACC Champions. The players exhibited excellent sportsmanship in all their games by playing fairly and showing respect. This group of talented players is expected to bring many more championships to Belen and many of the players have the talent to be very good in soccer. Congratulations to the 6th grade soccer team for a very memorable 20102011 soccer season. We look forward with anticipation to your future success both on and off the field.

This 2011 6th grade track and field team was one of the best teams we have had. Many of the runners like Adrian Bruna and Matthew Bravo, Patrick Perez, Jordan Galvez and shot put and discus throwers Steven Calles and Carlos Arazoza all stepped up and competed even in middle school meets. The team ended the season and their focused efforts earned them a 2nd place trophy at the ACC Championships! Congrats to the team as we look forward to the 2012 season.
