All of you have made great sacrifices and tried to be the best at your favorite sport, to the greater glory of God. On behalf of your coaches, teachers and the administration, congratulations for your perseverance, sportsmanship and desire to excel during the 2009-2010 season.

The Jesuit spiritual tradition inspires us to seek God in all things, including sports. Healthy competition brings the best of you as you try to achieve success. The effort required to be the best in sports trains you to pursue excellence in your own personal lives and in your future professions. We are proud of the Belen student athletes!

A MESSAGE FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Our sports program enjoyed another outstanding season, Our varsity teams had a combined record of 134 wins and 46 losses. 12 of our 13 varsity sports recorded winning seasons. The highlights of the year were our Varsity Swimming team winning their 4th consecutive State Championship, our Varsity Football team enjoying a historic season by going all the way to the State Championship game for the first time in school history. Our Varsity Cross Country team finishing as a State Runner Up and our Varsity track and field team winning the Regional title.

Other notable team achievements: the Varsity Baseball team, Soccer team, Tennis team, and the Water Polo teams all won district championships and our Basketball team finished as district runner up.

FHSAA STATE ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL:

The following Belen Jesuit varsity teams made the FHSAA Academic Team Honor Roll; basketball, football (finished in first place), cross country, soccer, tennis, track and field, volleyball, water polo and baseball. The FHSAA makes this list based on the combined GPA of all of the members of a particular team.

2009-1010 also had some coaching milestones. Coach Richard Stuart was selected as Coach of The Year by the South Florida Touchdown Club, and Coach Stuart along with Kirk Peppas are in the running for Coach of the Year by the Miami Herald.

Our Athletes also continue to excel: In swimming Carlos Omaña and Andy Vazquez were individual State Champions each with two individual first places. Their times were fast enough to earn them All American status. In wrestling Esteban Gomez-Rivera came away with a State Championship by taking first place in the 119 lb. weight class. In baseball Marcos Calderon has been named as 4A Region player of the Year. In football Pablo Alvarez signed a full scholarship with Division I University of Virginia. He is also among the top 3 hurdlers in the Country. Sophomore Elliot Clemente finished 1st place in the Junior National qualifying meet in the 3,000 meter race. Our 4x100 meter relay of Javier Rodriguez, Pablo Alvarez, Nick Menocal and Nic Platt won the state championship in school record time of 41.18. Pablo Alvarez also won the state championship in the 300 M hurdles while setting a new school record, Pablo also set a new school record in the 110 M hurdles. Also setting school records in track and field were Javier Rodriguez long jump and 100 M, Nic Platt in the 200 M and Elliot Clemente in the 3200 M.

At the middle school division our teams continue to be dominant and Belen Jesuit continues to have what is arguably the best over all athletic middle school programs in Miami-Dade County.

NEW PROJECTS: A new varsity cross country course is being built on campus making Belen Jesuit the first school with a permanent facility. Mr. Francisco Ruiz ’73 was instrumental in the dream becoming a reality! Preferred Care Partners donated the newly installed vita course. Other major contributions were made by Mr. Raul and Paola Rodriguez (Agua Dulce Investments), Alexis Mantecon, Nike, Suris Construction, Mr. Jose Smith, Florida Home Medical Equipment, The Garrido Foundation Inc., Mr. Carlos Penin and Mr. Naldo Gonzalez. Other projects for the near future include a new 50 meter swimming pool; spearheaded by the Zumpano family (Carlos and Joseph); Mr. Robert Barnes and Associates, Dr. Steven Avalon, Mr. Carlos and Mrs. Marta Lopez-Cantera, Mr. David Garcia, Mr. Roger Tomassino, Mr. Jose Gonzalez, Mr. Emil Infante, Mr. David Winker, Mr. Arnie Shevin, Mr. Kirk Peppas, Fr. Fernandez-Travieso S.J., Fr. Guillermo Garcia-Tuñon S.J. and Mr. Dan Baker. Other projects include the renovation and resurfacing of the track, improvements to the baseball field, renovations to the football field and the development of the 3.5 acre parcel of land located west of the baseball stadium.

Team Recognition: District Champions

The Belen baseball program continued its winning tradition in 2010 as the team ended the season with a 20-8 record to go along with a District Championship. The players showed an immensely improved work ethic from the first day of practice under first year head coach Ralph Henriquez and pitching coach Leo Mayi. They instilled their philosophy of pitching and defensive-minded baseball to the team’s game plan and the Wolverines executed it beautifully. With the help of a lights-out bullpen and an efficient starting rotation, the team went undefeated against district opponents. On the offensive side, the Wolverines received contributions from every spot in the order throughout the course of the year. Though the club failed to reach the ultimate goal this season, the future could not be brighter with the plethora of talent that will flood the varsity roster next spring.

VARSITY BASKETBALL

The Varsity Basketball team continued in its winning ways compiling a 20 – 10 record this past season and advancing into the playoffs for the seventh consecutive year.

The Wolverines started the season with six key players on the bench due to the football team’s success on the field, but were still able to win four of the first six games (the two losses occurring in overtime). During Christmas break, the entire team participated in both the Kreul Classic and the National Jesuit Tournament at Georgetown Prep. in Washington, D.C. The Wolverines reached the championship game in both tournaments by convincingly defeating tough opponents along the way. The team posted a 9 and 3 record in district play and had key wins against Pahokee, Georgetown Preparatory, Florida Christian, and Archbishop McCarthy. In the district tournament, the Wolverines defeated Miami Jackson and Mater Academy before losing in the district championship game to Miami Norland. The team’s final loss to Cardinal Gibbons, a Final Four team, brought to an end a season full of highs and lows.

Coach Jose Roca recorded his 250th career win this year and has averaged 19.5 wins per year during his 13 year varsity career.

The Wolverines were led by Reggie Colas with 12 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals per game, Stefano Natali with 10.5 points, 6 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game, and Nicholas Santurio with 8 points, 4 assists, and 2 steals per game. Other contributors included Alfredo Latour with 9 points and 4 rebounds per game, Pablo Alvarez with 10 points and 6 rebounds per game, and Manny Sicre with 5 points, 2 assists, and 2 steals per game. Sergio Fernandez-Soto came on strong during the second half of the season, while Jason Fernandez and Arturo Martinez supplied the senior leadership. Nick Botero, Edmond Benedetti, Jordan Blecher, and Antonio Ucar provided solid play off the bench.

Once again this season, the varsity squad got off to a very fast start with a dominate performance at the Opening Day Regatta. Belen won all races in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd 8+ categories. This years’ Miami International Regatta brought out very stiff competition and the Varsity 8+ was only able to garnish a bronze medal. There was a better outcome for the JV 8+ that took home silver. Lightweights and 3rd eight both took home the top spots of their categories. At a tri-meet in Winter Park, the highlight of a very windy day came when Belen’s Lightweight 8+ defeated Winter Parks JV eight by 6 seconds. It turned out to be the one and only loss for a Winter Park Varsity boat the entire season. Challenges came when we headed off to our annual spring break training trip to Georgia. Although the water was perfect, our speed was hampered by a virus that sickened almost half the team. The virus caused us to miss a critical pre-states race, Florida Sprints League. States, once again, proved to be a struggle. The varsity 8+ had a good row in their first heat but did not progress to the reps. The increase speed of Florida rowing was on display when 9 teams in the heat were separated by only 3 seconds. The JV eight moved to reps but could not pull out the sprint to advance to the final. The lightweight boat, who had dominated their category all season, suffered from a month off of racing. Their desire was to row fast and strong. In a very heavy tail wind the row became frantic, and we finish in a disappointed 3rd place. The bright spot of the weekend was the performance of our 3rd varsity 8+. The program showed great depth by winning a silver medal in this event. Congratulations to Miguel Zaldivar (Cox), Matt Sierra, Brandon Eisaman, Christoph Sproul, EJ Ragolta, Tomas Cacicedo, Javier Ortiz, Alexander Errazquin, Luis Restrepo. The Belen Crew continues to grow and mature with each season. Belen was the only program in the state to race in every men’s 8+ category. We will come out next year more determined to maintain our state prowess.

The team once again followed its traditional excruciating workout training schedule as teams always have throughout the 39-year history of the program. The workouts proved to be a greater challenge than usual because of the many uncontrollable occurrences to several key runners on the team. Luckily, the depth of the team was a saving grace as the 37-runner team dealt with multiple injuries and illness from the swine flu. Many of the runners on the team found their meaning on this team because of the necessity to step up and meet the challenge of being down a key runner or two at the various major meets.

The team continued to search for its identity as the season progressed. They began to work as ONE TEAM and managed to get it together and run healthy and aggressive towards the latter part of the season. The leadership on the team was that of only one senior, Max Echarte, who was determined to go after a team State Championship. The team knew it had an uphill battle after having moved up into a new classification in 3A. In this particular classification the team had more competition than ever. Leading up to the state meet the team won the District and Regional championships in impressive fashion.

The 2009 team, at the Florida State Championships held at Little Everglades Ranch in Dade City, were led by Elliot Clemente (who finished 3rd overall and Miami Dade County’s top finisher), followed by Joseph Lindsay, Branden Martinez, Gaby Loret de Mola, Julian Rey, Max Echarte and Peter Jude. This top 7 unit fought as hard as it could to dethrone top ranked Leon but fell short of this goal. The team yet still captured a highly respected team Runner-Up trophy, to add a 9th Runner-Up finish to the school’s record (the most of any school in the state). As in life, we often times work hard at achieving our goals yet fall short, however, in doing so we further find meaning and purpose and this team most certainly discovered this and there is no doubt that given its youthful experience they will return for another determined run in 2010.

While so much can be said about this year’s football season, no words can adequately describe it. After getting off to a less than impressive start, dropping three of the first five games, the Wolverines rallied to go on a ten game win streak. The team had faith in themselves when no one else did. They went on the most historic run in school history, winning districts, regionals, and became the school’s first ever state finalist. The Wolverines were lead by a strong core of seniors, ten of which will continue their football career at the collegiate level. However, the underclassmen played a crucial role as well, and look to carry that success into next season. The 2009-2010 football team will forever go down as the most successful team in school history to date.

Varsity Team Roster

The Varsity Golf team had a record of 3 wins and 6 losses in its dual and three way matches, but peaked at the right time starting with the Dade County Youth Fair Tournament where the team finished 4th out of a field of 17 teams. The team was led by Carlos Padron and Oscar Cabanas with rounds of 73 and 78. The team followed this accomplishment with a 5th place finish at the inaugural Deering Bay Invitational where the team was led by Rene Negron’s round of 79. After this came the all important District Finals where the team placed 3rd, enabling it to move on to the Regional Finals. At districts Oscar Cabanas led all Belen golfers with a round of 79. At regionals, Belen once again finished 3rd missing moving on to the State Finals by one spot. Belen was led for the second time by Oscar Cabanas who had a round of 78. The future for next year looks bright as we have only 1 graduating senior on the team.

The JV golf Team finished its season with a 5-2 record. The season was highlighted by wins against the Ransom and Gulliver JV teams. The team was led by Ernie De La Fe and Danny Perez both of which consistently scored in the low 40s.

VARSITY Lacrosse

The season of 2010 was the first year that Belen participated as a varsity lacrosse team in the Florida IA league. The team was very competitive from the start and finished 3rd in the district and made the playoffs – ending their first campaign with 6 wins and 9 losses. Every opponent the team faced was more experienced, but the guys style of play was filled with heart and determination and this set the tone for this first varsity season. The team was led by the senior dominated defense of Ed Senior, Michael Mechoso, Giuseppe Zuozo, and Eddy Franca. Axel Gonzalez played outstanding in his 1st year playing goalie. The offense was led by our experienced attack unit of Brandon Mesa (26 goals and 5 assists) and Robby Cosio (18 goals and 21 assists) and Kevin Perez (3 goals and 3 assists). Danny Boix, Gilbert Serein, Andrew Alvarado, Michael Murgado, and Mikey Rodriguez were the warriors at the midfield - playing crushing defense and skilled offense. Although the team loses many talented seniors, the future of the lacrosse team is very, very bright as 6

and a promising group of new varsity players comes up from the JV team.

The Varsity Roller Hockey team suffered a windfall after the 2009 when they graduated five seniors including their Team Captain. This season the team was determined to maintain their solid records established in the past few years. The hockey team had to drive up to Pembroke Pines every Wednesday where they had their games. Sophomore Michael Aguad led the team in scoring averaging almost 2.5 goals per game.

The team next year is going to almost double in size as the majority of the high-chemistry junior high team moves up to varsity. “We’re gong to have a young team next year and there’s going to be great room for improvement. We should be a force to be reckoned with soon enough,” said Head Coach Ski Aguad.

This was a fantastic year, not only because the team won its first district championship since 2004, but in the manner in which it was achieved. This warrior team fought tough and rose to the challenges of the season. With seconds to be played in the championship game against Key West and losing by one goal, Mateo Buraglia tied the game sending it to overtime and penalty kicks where goalie Daniel Mion had a key block to clinch the title. Having a major influence in the team’s success was Borja Sagarduy who through his leadership and toughness helped the team. With a solid defense and excellent midfield the team was able to score 52 goals while allowing only 16 the whole season. Congratulations to all the players for their discipline and heart, you are true champions.

The Swimming team accomplished an amazing feat this year by winning their fourth consecutive State Championship. Behind the leadership of Carlos Omaña and Andres Vazquez, the Wolverines came out on top at the 2A State Championship. Both Juniors were instrumental in Belen’s swimming success this year. Andy Vazquez won two individual titles and was part of two relays and Carlos Omaña won two individual titles and was part of one relay. The Wolverines look to stay solid next year as the core of the team returns to make a push for five. VARSITY TENNIS

The Varsity Tennis team entered uncharted territory this year by capturing the District championship and earning a regional runner-up trophy. This year’s squad was led again by freshman Juan Lorido, who posted an impressive 15-4 run in #1 singles, capturing Belen’s first district singles title since 2008. He eventually advanced to the state semi-finals. Lorido was joined in Altamonte Springs by his doubles partner and district champion for #2 singles John Pessoa. Other standouts included Senior Captain Manny Lorenzo and Ferran Arimon and Junior Jose Lorido. All won district singles championships in their respective divisions. The team also hosted Strake Jesuit from Houston at our campus, reviving a tradition begun by Coach Patrick Collins. With eight players graduating, the team is set to remake itself with a talented infusion of incoming freshmen next season. In the meantime, Wolverine tennis will enjoy its new role of district champion.

Before the season started, a lot of the players were a little skeptical on how it was going to turn out. Losing nearly our entire varsity team from the previous year, our young team did better than expected. We finished with a winning record of 14-11 and competed in the District tournament where only the top four teams in the district participate. Although there were some bumps along the road with a couple of injuries, everyone adjusted and played hard to make the season an outstanding one.

The Belen 2010 Varsity Water Polo season proved to be just as expected. The team made a run for the state title, but with the loss in the regional game the season came to a end. The team was full of young players that will be around for the coming 5 years. They should be a team that will be in hunt for the state title in the upcoming years. The team loses 4 Seniors, team captain Anthony Lopez who lead the team for the second year in scoring with 71 goals and 31 steals, also leaving are seniors Mario Carcamo, David Angarita and Caki Padron.

The team will return every other player on the varsity team and some upcoming young talent. Belen ended the season with the best overall team record of 15-1 regular season in the State. The did win the St. Andrews Invitational Tournament and traveled to Annapolis to the Naval Academy for some practice. The future holds a very strong outlook and we look forward to the 2011 Season.

We thank all our parents and players for a great season. In just 6 years the sport already has 3 District Championships, 1 Regional Championship, 1 State Title in 2009 and an unbeaten streak of 39 games between the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

Once again this year we had a young group of wrestlers that were eager to wrestle and win. This year was great and it was another stepping stone for the upcoming season in 2010-2011. The team finished in fourth place in our new district in the 2A classification, we also had four individual District Champions. They were Esteban Gomez-Rivera (119), Joshua Lopez (125), Randy Mompremier (189) and Chris Arguello (HWT). The highlight of season came when Esteban Gomez-Rivera was crowned State Champion in the 119 lbs. division. He became our first champion in six years. With that victory Esteban has the possibility of joining Jason Machado as Belen’s only three time wrestling champion.

This year’s JV Baseball team has done everything it could on the field to prove that Belen has some of the best young talent in Miami-Dade county. This team has a great mixture of talent. Offensively, we had the best of both worlds, with guys who could get on base any way possible; and others who showed tremendous power to all fields. In every game it seemed as if there was a new player with a clutch performance to help us win the game. It is no wonder why we did not lose a game after the second week of the season. Our pitching was outstanding; we had our two starters who kept the other team in check for most of the game and two very capable relievers to hold on for the win. This team did everything it had to do to win and did everything as a team. Look out for Belen Baseball in the future to do something special.

The JV Basketball team accomplished a very successful season this year. With one freshman and a strong sophomore class the team finished with an impressive record of 16-3. The team played relentless pressure defense and fast break oriented scoring which enabled them to out score their opponents by an average of 20 points per game.

Season highlights included wins over Norland, Felix Varela, Mater Academy, Key West, Miami Central, and Miami Jackson. The only three tough losses were close games against Columbus, Sagemont, and Archbishop McCarthy.

Alex Pis-Dudot, Aurelio Leyva, and Michael Fernandez led the team in scoring, steals, and assists. Leyva ran the point guard duties with help from Nicolas Moreiras and both played very well running the offense. Manny Noya, Danny Admire and Peter Cirera provided a strong inside presence, rebounding and scoring. The only ninth grader on the team, Michael Fernandez was outstanding rebounding, shooting, and playing defense. Alec Macias, Kevin Valiente, and Daniel Valverde were instrumental coming off the bench providing scoring and defense. Notable contributions were turned in by Christian Marrero, Jordan Fernandez, Dominick Hidalgo and Amadeo Lopez-Castro. This team worked extremely hard, were very disciplined and unselfish. The team’s dedication made it possible to finish the season 16-3.

This year’s Junior Varsity Crew was made up of athletes getting their first full season of rowing. Boys in the junior varsity program compete either in the novice category or the freshman category. The first regatta of the season took place in Orlando and the boys quickly learned how the weather can add an extra challenge to racing. In strong winds, the novice and freshmen crews finished sixth and fifth. At our one shot in the season to row in front of a home town crowd, at the Miami International Regatta, both the novices and freshmen crews earned bronze medals. The freshmen went on to race strongly at our tri-race in Winter Park and trained hard during spring break in Georgia. At the Florida Scholastic Rowing Championship, the freshman eight moved from their first round heats to the repechages. The rep proved to be one of the freshman’s gutsiest performances of the year. They moved through a very tight field to finish .4 seconds behind Pine Crest. The following day, they came away with a sixth place position in the state. All freshmen and novices are finishing the season with strong racing under their belt and high expectations for the future.

Middle School Crew is an opportunity for the boys to get started with the training involved in the sport prior to the 8th grade, novice season. The seventh graders spend their time at the boathouse on the rowing machine, running, and developing strength. This year of training gives them an advantage over athletes that start later. Good job to all the seventh graders putting the training time in this year so that you can be fast on the water next season.

The 2009-2010 JV Football season was one for the history books, as the team went 7-0 to go undefeated for only the second time in school history. Much of the success was credited to the boys as they pushed themselves all off-season lifting weights to get stronger than their opposition. These boys’ character, toughness, and work ethic were incredible and that lead to the outcome of this season. Offensively this team shattered many records for points in a game (54 vs. Key West) and the points per game average (34 per game). In the backfield there was a committee of three RBs that were a large reason for the team’s success, Alex Alvarez (539 yards 8 TDs), Xavier Hines (624 yards 6 TDs), and Alex Chica (543 yards 6 TDs). There success wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for the strong offensive line play lead by Matt Dorta, Kevin Viera, and Willy Pujals. Defensively this team was shut down and created many turnovers through out the season. The defense shut out four opponents and held everyone to an average of 5 points a game. Defensively this team was guided by Jordan Esteban, Ricardo Fonseca, Alex Diblasi, Andy Garcia, and Julio Ayala. They provided veteran leadership and made many memorable plays throughout the season. This season was one to remember not only because of how dominant the JV Wolverines were, but how tough these kids were when any adversity was in their way.

2010 was a challenging year for the JV lacrosse team as it consisted of players that had no game experience and no lacrosse experience. This team was full of guys with heart, determination, and guts. After losing the first game badly, the team rebounded strongly and played the entire rest of the schedule very tight. No matter the score, the team never gave up and improved every single day and every single game. The team was led by the play of our goalie (Paco Villafañe) and the defense of Anthony Monzon, Gabriel Jimenez, Robert Lopez-Ibañez, and Michael Muñoz. The attack unit was the heart of the offense with Edwin Ricardo, Ethan Rodriguez, and Kevin Pascual controlling the tempo of the game. The midfield had many strong contributors – with Jonathan Lucas, William Singer, Michael Jimenez, Brandon Arciero, and JP Rodriguez leading the way. Being the first year for many of these players and watching the growth over the season, next year’s JV team will be outstanding as the experience of this year and the hard work of the off-season will give us a very bright future.

Having an outstanding season were Jose Scheuren that shows great promise of helping out in the varsity level right away and Alex Paz who improved greatly throughout the season.

The Junior Varsity Volleyball team had a great season this year. They finished their season with seven wins and four losses making it an exciting season. The team lost a lot of players who were moved up to varsity and had to build a whole new team. Almost half of this year’s players had never played volleyball before. This was a challenge that the team overcame, practicing very hard and working together. A couple of the starters were first time players who stepped it up and helped their team to a winning season. This team had a bunch of amazing players and showed it while they played.

JV WATER POLO

This seasons’ Water Polo team was made up of 14 players. They played five games during the season and finished the season with the Gulliver Tournament, where the team captured first place. Through it all the team remained unbeaten, eclipsing last years’ 5-1 record. The Wolverines accomplished this with a potent offense that scored 203 goals and a stingy defense that allowed 20 goals all season. It is the hope of the coaching staff that these players keep practicing hard so that they can help maintain the State Champion tradition in varsity.

Our freshman baseball team showed strong character all year long . This was our first year with a freshmen team, because there was too much talent just to have one team. These guys are very much a part of Belen’s promising future. There was no game in which the freshmen team forgot to give it their all. They were given hard tasks because they had to play mostly other JV teams. Despite winning only one game, there was never a game in which they threw in the towel. They fought hard to the end of every game. We should all be very proud of this team for always giving their all.

By all accounts, the 2009-2010 freshman basketball team exceeded all expectations. Relying on a deep and talented backcourt, the Wolverines displayed an aggressive and opportunistic style to offset their overall lack of height. The team’s successful 13-4 campaign was highlighted by payback victories over powerful rivals St. Thomas Aquinas and Christopher Columbus as well as a sweep of the season series with both Gulliver Prep and Monsignor Pace. Six different players led the team in scoring throughout the season, reflecting the squad’s balance and unselfish play. Leading the Wolverines were point guard Javier Alvarez, whose hustle and drive fueled the team’s uptempo style, and power forward Ryan Murphy, whose relentless play on both ends of the court kept the team competitive in every game. In the end, all of the players contributed with their spirit and determination to make this season a very memorable one indeed.

While losing four of the eighth grade’s most talented ball players to the junior varsity, this young Junior High Gold squad showed a multitude of talent, potential, and athletic ability.

This Gold team is eager to join their colleagues at the next level in their rise through the high school ranks. Strong leadership from key players such as David Guevara, Eric Artigues, and Gabriel Soto, brought this team together amidst struggles and uncertainty early on. However, this team collectively shared a love for the game and will continue to develop and grow at the next level.

This team had high expectations coming into the season. A very talented group of guys who love coming day in and day out and leave everything on the field. I never had to ask them to give me 100%, it was a given. They love to play the game and it showed this season finishing in 1st place in the ACC.

The Junior High Gold Basketball team completed another successful season with 16 wins and only one loss. The team, who I have coached for two years in a row, was composed of hard workers with excellent basketball skills. I had a lot of fun throughout the season with the team as we completed an undefeated ACC schedule. The ACC championship was earned with a victory over St. Timothy who had been previously undefeated. Our only loss was to Ransom, who we then beat late in the season. This team was very deep and I could have started each of them on any night. Nick Fernandez and Johnny Medina led the team day in and day out. Unfortunately, the team suffered injuries to both forwards Alex Portela and Matthew Vega-Sanz at mid-season, but Jose Smith, Christian Barrial and Guillermo Lopez-Castro stepped up. We also had excellent guard play led by Nicolas Iparraguirre, Matthew Fernandez and Billy Candela. The key to this teams record though was not our offensive power but our defense and our ability to rebound , holding our opponents to just one shot.

“Green” the word that best describes this year’s team at the start. Not the most experienced team in the league quickly learned to play the game, and did it successfully. The team began the year excelling on the defensive side of the ball. Led by E.J. Cosculluela’s energy, gritty defense, and rebounding the team held three of its first four opponents under 20 points. This was particularly important due to some early struggles on the offensive side of the ball. The team’s offense picked up steam as the season went on led by Julio Palomera, who led the team in scoring, and did so by coming off the bench and providing a tremendous offensive spark with his patented move, in which very few in the league could stop. The team began to gel and hit their stride ending the season on a great run by winning 5 of its last 6 games. They took directions well, listened and applied what was talked about, worked hard in practice; and most importantly had fun during both practice and games. All 12 players on the roster contributed to winning games and the team’s success but most importantly having fun while doing so.

JH CROSS COUNTRY

The Junior High Cross Country team once again live up to expectations and had another successful season. The Wolverines were unbeaten all season long and captured in style the coveted flrunners.com State Competition by scoring 24 points and the Dade County Youth Fair Championship by scoring 26 points. At the flrunners meet we to took five of the top fourteen spots to claim the title and at the Dade County Youth Fair meet we took five out of the nine spots. The team had a solid core of runners that were led by Michael Magoulas, Fabian Tomas and Andy Fernandez. Playing a vital supporting role were Kevin Montiel, Alex Isaac, Osiel Gonzalez and Tuto Mejer. Even when not at full strength the team’s depth proved valuable in keeping up the pace set early on in the season. We also captured our 19th ACC Championship and 10th Tri-County Championship. The future looks bright for the Wolverine cross country program.

The 2009 Junior High Football team is definitely a special team. This group of young men worked hard through summer conditioning and came out to play from the first game beating Ransom Everglades 34-6 at home. Another win at home against Westminster, 21-8 showed that we were for real. Although the next week would take us to Calvary Christian where we would have a tough fight that would end up in a overtime loss, this team grew from this experience playing tough to the end. Next was Dade Christian, that we would dominate winning 30-6. The following week would be a tough test that would have us once again in overtime. This time the result was different as we won on a fantastic finish! Next on the schedule was our rival, Gulliver. Coming to ‘Our House’ it would be a long day for the visitors as our boys took it to them 34-6. The last game of the season would be against the undefeated American Heritage Patriots. They jumped out front and made some big plays that put us in a hole. Our boys did not give up scoring twice in the second half but fell short. Although we all would have preferred a different out come to this game, that did not change how proud I am of the season this team had. Finishing 6-2 and having played tough all year is something that all the boys should be proud of! With this group of young men joining the excellent group that I had last year I believe that the future of the Belen football program will be in GREAT HANDS for years to come! After losing a huge group of seven eighth graders last season to the varsity, this season seemed like it would be a rebuilding year. But in life, there are surprises, and that’s exactly what happened. The 2009 Belen Jesuit Junior High Swim team was dominant in every possible way. This year was led by a very special group of 8th graders, Boleck De Pawlikowski, Jonathan Chow and Juan Perez, whom led the way winning their events consistently. They were part of record setting relays that were relentless, winning every relay they swam this year. Along with them, two very special seventh graders, Ryan Guso and Santiago Nuñez, whom are expected to lead the Wolverines next season. The rest of the team played a very crucial part scoring points and stealing spots, to knock out other swimmers from finals. Right from the get go, they started off by winning the Westminster Invitational by 50 points, proving that this year was ours for the taking. After that came the Belen Invitational, the Ransom Invitational, the MIS Championships and the most significant victory of them all, the Middle School Youth Fair Championships. Last year the Wolverines won the MSYF by a record setting 110 points, which was an amazing task. This year’s team had goals of shattering that record, and they did. The Wolverines defeated every school in the county, both private and public school, by a record setting 136 points. This was something that they had been doing all year long. Sweeping all the relays, all season long and winning an average of 7 out of 9 events competition after competition. They truly showed to be the best of the best. Next season should be a promising year, with a lot of the boys coming back experienced and wanting to break more records.

The Middle School tennis team stepped out of varsity’s shadow this year to post a 3-1 winning record. Led by eighth grader Bryan Rodriguez, the team demolished its competition including a big upset versus Ransom Everglades. Mark Lagunas, Christian Perez and Santi Vidal all posted winning records in their swan songs as Middle Schoolers. Other standouts included new players William Lorenzo, Alberto Pardo and Michael Tefel. Many of the eighth graders are ready for the challenge of making the varsity roster next year! Well done to them all!

Team Recognition: 1st Place- ACC Relays, Fr. Sardiña SJ, Respect Life, Crusader Classic, ACC and Westminster Academy; 2nd Place- Tri-County; 3rd PlaceDade County.

The Junior High team capped a victorious season by winning every race we had except for one, the ACC TriCounty was lost by 3 points, due to a few absences. However all the athletes that participated that day stepped up making personal records, and displaying their best efforts, in the hurdlers, and in the throws, even though we were missing a few distance runners. However on every other meet our distance runners were solid. Led by Fabian Tomas, Michael Magoulas, Kevin Montiel, Ozzie Gonzalez, and Andy de Varona. The sprinters that were key team members were Nick Fernandez, Rey Madiedo, Cesar Rebolledo, and Christian Barrial. Covering the hurdles were Jorge Powell, Johnny Medina, Nico Iparraguirre, and Alvaro Mejer all contributed to a winning season. As for the field events Jose Smith excelled in every meet for shot put and Jack Flood for discus. Other key raising stars that were placed in any event at anytime were Daniel Neptune, Marcus Jacobo-Gonzalez, and Guillermo Lopez-Castro. These three young men never complained they just went out every week and got the job done. Congratulations.

JH VOLLEYBALL

The season started great, we finished in the ACC tournament as #1 and in the conference regular season #1 as well with a record of 10-3. The hardest part of the season was playing outside with the sun and wind but as the season progressed we improved, and as we assimilated to the conditions we started winning. This was a great season and I am looking forward to many more successful seasons to come in volleyball.

The sixth grade team came into the season with a lot to learn because they are new to the program at Belen but they made a good transition. They played well all year and finished in 1st place in the ACC. They went to several tournaments and competed well against older teams. The future is bright for Belen Jesuit baseball.

Before tryouts even began for the 6th grade basketball team, there was a buzz in the air about this year’s team. I was going into my seventh season as 6th grade basketball coach, and I myself was getting excited about what I was hearing about the talent coming in this year. Eighty four students signed up to try out, and after two agonizing weeks I selected sixteen of them, from a very talented group of players. This team had high expectations, and they delivered by winning the ACC south division championship, and defeating rival St. Timothy in the championship of the St. Brendan JV basketball tournament. The team had an overall record of 11 wins and 1 loss. The one loss was against Epiphany early on in the season. I believe this was a turning point for our team, when we realized that we were not invincible. It was a very humbling experience for me and the team, and from that moment on they made the choice to not let that happen again. This was a special group, a very talented group and the future of our program. I love coaching sixth grade basketball because I’m able to see our future now, and with continued hard work and dedication who knows where we end up. I would like to thank the parents for all their support, and the players for giving me the opportunity to coach them, it truly was a wonderful experience.

New faces, new friends, new team. That is how the sixth grade cross country team always starts. With a new batch of Wolverines, they come together in common purpose. This year’s group had an outstanding season. They would have gone undefeated if it wasn’t for the fact that the top three six graders ran in a junior high meet that same day at another location. Led by the amazing talent of Jorge Gomez and Bruno Zayas; the tenacity of Nick Roca and Michael Lopez; and the hard work of Jaime Lopez, Rodrigo Bustamante and Dominic Wermuth the Wolverines went on to win the ACC Championship for the first time in five years. This is the eighth ACC title in the sixth grade program. The team went also to win the Tri-County Championship. This has the ability to be highly successful team in the future with hard work and determination.

This was a team whose greatest strength was their unity of play. They demonstrated to have good individual values and that the school will be the beneficiary of this talent. With so many good players they will prove to be a valuable asset to the varsity team down the road. The team scored 55 goals in favor and only allowed 12 goals all season. Having an outstanding season were Roberto Gatica, Anthony Castro, Fernando Pujals and Johnny Powell.

The Belen 6th Grade team finished out successfully this season, Jorge Gomez, and Bruno Zayas, distance runners and Johnny Powell, hurdler and long jumper, Dominic Wermuth, and Nicholas Toottle sprinters lead the six graders to victory. Along with field event champions for shot put and discus throw Kevin Valdes, and Christian Chavarry. We had a lot of young men out there working to do their best every day. Team captains Jorge Gomez and Bruno Zayas lead their team with order in their warm ups, being responsible to complete their workouts, and maintaining a high level of respect for each other. The cohesiveness of this team led to the boys capturing the most important ACC race of the year. We earned 1st place for ACC Tri-County Championships, the hard work had paid off.
