Dear Student-Athletes,

It is with great pleasure that I address you today. Belen Jesuit’s mission is to guide and support our students in their process of becoming men who are open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving, and committed to doing justice. I believe that this mission is exemplified through our student-athletes.

We celebrate your achievements and congratulate all of you for your perseverance, sportsmanship, commitment to excellence and desire to do the right thing not only in the classrooms and in your personal lives, but also in the sports arena.

Ignatian spirituality teaches all of us to seek God in all things, including sports. Healthy competition brings the best of you as you try to beat a record and emulate those who have achieved success. The effort required to be the best in sports trains you to pursue excellence in your own personal lives and in your future professions. All of you have made great sacrifices and tried to be the best at your favorite sport, to the greater glory of God.

As a student-athlete you push your bodies to the limit and your work ethic is second to none. You listen to your coaches and are willing to embrace new techniques and plays. As a student-athlete at Belen Jesuit, you are held to a higher standard. You are expected to do well in school, while excelling in the field, pool, or arena. We beat our opponents both physically and mentally. I love to see how our teams either unite together in Mass or in prayer before games. You have embodied what our founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola, envisioned - a well-rounded student who seeks God in all things and succeeds for the Greater Glory of God. I commend you and your coaches for keeping God in your activities. I believe that I am most proud for the way we win, while adhering to the rules. We play by the rules, take blame for our mistakes, and correct them as soon as possible. I cannot ask more of our student-athletes and coaches.

On behalf of your coaches, teachers and the administration, congratulations! We are all proud of the Belen student-athletes.

May the good Lord inspire you to excel in your performance as athletes, scholars and in service. May the humble Mother of Christ, Our Lady of Belen, be always at your side, helping you to be better “men for others”, both now and in the future.

The accomplishments of our sports program from the sixth grade level through the varsity level are numerous. The Sixth Grade and Junior High program continue with its domination of both ACC and non-ACC teams. Championships in cross-country, basketball, soccer, baseball, track and field, and swimming were achieved through the hard work of our young athletes and their coaches. This is most apparent with our middle school track and field team winning the state title for the second year in a row. The future looks bright as our middle school students become our high school athletes in the coming years.

The High School program also continued its recent success with another great year. The varsity football, basketball, cross country, track and field, swimming, wrestling, and volleyball teams advanced into the state playoff system once again. State champions wer e country for the second year in a row.

A MESSAGE FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

THREE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS!!! CROSS COUNTRY AND SWIMMING: EACH BACK TO BACK TO BACK !!!! AND WATER POLO!!!!

What a year!!!!! It started out with the varsity swim team winning their THIRD CONSECUTIVE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP, in an exciting state finals held at the YMCA AQUATIC CENTER IN ORLANDO. Leading their team to victory were State Champions and event winners Carlos Omana, Julio Lopez, Julian Ballestas, Andy Vazquez and Pablo Morejon; the team captain. The following week the varsity cross country team came back with their 3rd consecutive State Championships in the sport; under the leadership of Miami Herald All County runners, Joseph Dorfman, Larry Duran, Elliot Clemente and Lazaro Fields and their head Coach Frankie Ruiz. It didn’t stop there. Spring Season came and something miraculous happens! Belen Jesuit won their first State Championship in the sport of water polo behind the outstanding performances of Jake Bakas, Juan Lopez, JC Lopez, Anthony Lopez and Carlos Padron.

ADVERSITY OVERCOME: The varsity swim team had to overcome adversity when their legendary Head Coach Kirk Peppas suffered a mild stroke which sidelined him during the second half of the season. A young and inexperienced assistant coach, Kyle Hasting filled in as the head coach. A relay team worth a possible 20 points got disqualified during district due to a technicality but the team managed to stay together and pull out the big upset! Then the water polo team’s assistant coach Luis Martinez suffered a mild heart after practice and ended up having open heart surgery; he came back about a month later to help head Coach Osvaldo Garcia lead the team. Their starting goalie Carlos Basnuevo is sidelined for the season due to a car accident and back up goalie Carlos Padron filled in admirably. Mr. Julio Lopez, a parent also proved to be an invaluable asset to the program! Cross County was not to be outdone. They started the year ranked 2nd in the pre season poll and went on to record a perfect big meet invitational record and in doing so were able to beat every team in the State of Florida regardless of classifications. They were dominant in the State Championship meet; along the way they achieved National recognition.

The varsity baseball, track and field, cross country and the water polo teams all captured District championships while the varsity basketball, football, swimming and golf teams finished as District runners up.

THE VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM WON THE ACADEMIC STATE TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP AWARD FOR THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR.

CURRENTLY BELEN JESUIT IS IN FIRST PLACE IN THE FHSAA FOR OVER ALL ATHLETIC PROGRAM.

Our varsity baseball team, basketball team, crew, cross country, football, golf, roller hockey, soccer, swimming, tennis, track and field, volleyball, water polo and wrestling all recorded winning seasons.

Our varsity teams combined for a record of 164 wins, 47 losses and 4 ties.

MIDDLE SCHOOL:

Belen Jesuit continues their dominance in the middle school division. Our 8th grade and under division captured first place over all in the All CATHOLIC CONFERENCE AND OUR 6TH. GRADE DIVISION FINISHED IN THE RUNNER UP SPOT, THIS INSPITE OF NOT HAVING A PRIMARY GRADE DIVISION.

NEW PROJECTS:

The construction of a permanent cross country and vita course; when completed this summer; it will be the only high school in Miami Dade County with a permanent cross country course on campus. We will also be fundraising for the re-coating of our rubber surface track and swimming pool upgrades.

MANY, MANY THANKS:

On behalf of our school administration, coaches and athletes we would like to thank all of the parents, teachers, alumni and sponsors for their unselfish support. A special thanks to Vincam, the Yearbook, Student Council, and Key Club, without your help none of our accomplishments could ever be possible. Our success could never have been made possible without the invisible hands that guide us… Jesus Christ, Our beloved Mother Our Lady of Belen and our founder St. Ignatius of Loyola. The spiritual guidance of Fr. Guillermo Garcia-Tunon, Fr. Frank Permuy and Fr. Pedro Suarez, are always present as well as the quiet support and prayers offered by all of the other Jesuits.

The Belen Jesuit athletic Department will like to also acknowledge and thank Fr. Marcelino Garcia, SJ for all that he did during his 25 years at Belen. His leadership, effort and devotion allowed Belen to become one of the top high schools in the Nation! We wish him the best! We’ll keep you in our prayers.

A special note of gratitude to Ricky Raimundez and the alumni office, without their support, help and guidance we would not have been able to accomplish all of these things. Belen Jesuit alumni; YOU ARE THE BEST! And envy of all!

Team Record: 20-10-1

Team Recognition: District Champions Regional Quarter Finalist

The 2009 Wolverines started their season with a chip on their shoulder after losing their first district tournament game last year to Key West to end their season. The team finished the season 20-10-1 with the help of their pitching, defense, and speed. Pitching was led by Andres Wiltz, a senior that signed with St. Louis University, which had an 8-2 record. The Wolverines pitching was also helped by Edgar Sanchez, a junior and Mario Rojas, a senior. The Wolverines had a solid defensive year with a young middle infield that consisted of Alex DeGoti, a freshman, and Chris Trujillo, a sophomore. With one of the fastest team in wolverine history they used it to their advantage to score runs. Emilio Pastor, a senior that signed with the University of Pennsylvania, used his speed to steal bases and bunt for hits, but also sported some power with 3 homeruns. Kyle Prats used his speed into the record books and stole a wolverine record of 19 bases. Seniors Daniel Barrero and Michael Herrera led the team in RBI’s and contributed to every win. With Senior Cesar Ferreiro behind the plate nobody dared steal off him. The team was led by Head Coach Antonio Meilan who won 4A Coach of the Year honors and Andres Wiltz who won 4A Player of the year honors. With the help of everyone the Wolverines were able to defeat their rival the Key West Conchs 9-2 for their third District Championship in five years, under coach Meilan. Andres Wiltz says “After 4 years there is no better way to end it than to win Districts.”

The varsity basketball team had another successful season ending with a 21 – 8 record. The Wolverines advanced into the regional tournament as district runner-up for the fourth year in a row. A victory against Cardinal Gibbons in the regional quarterfinal set up a third matchup against Monsignor Pace. Unfortunately, the third game ended up just like the District Championship game. Belen Jesuit gave Pace all they could handle, but finished a few points behind. Another notable game was the Wolverines impressive 25 point victory against the Columbus Explorers giving Belen their 5th win in seven years. The team also participated in the Kreul Classic for the second year in a row and took third place in the inaugural National Jesuit Tournament at Georgetown Prep in Washington, DC.

The Wolverines were led by juniors Reggie Colas with 12.5 points, 4 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per game and Pablo Alvarez with 11.7 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game. The senior leadership was provided by Alfonso Aguila, Brandon Fernandez, Jorge Menocal and Jorge Portuondo. Jorge Menocal led all seniors with 6 points, 7 rebounds, and 1 block per game and was an example for everyone on and off the court. Alfredo Latour and Manny Sicre became starters half way through the season after an injury to Nicholas Santurio, who was averaging at the time 6 points and 3.5 assists per game. Alfredo averaged 7 points, 3 rebounds, and 1.5 points per game, while Manny added 6 points, 3.5 assists, and 2 steals per game. Sergio Fernandez-Soto was the spark plug off the bench with 5.5 points, 2 steals, and 2 assists per game. Jason Fernandez, Arturo Martinez, and Stefano Natali contributed to the team’s success on a daily basis. The coaches are looking forward to next season with nine players returning to the varsity team and an anticipated playoff run.

The varsity squad got out to a very fast start this season winning the top three eight races at the Opening Day Regatta. Belen Crew continued its dominance at the Miami International Regatta by taking home gold in all but one 8+ race. The varsity lightweight boat went on to capture the bronze medal at the Florida Scholastic Rowing Championship. Youth and inexperience caught up with our other varsity eights at the state championship, but being the youngest eights in the field will have high rewards next season. The crew will continue training and will represent Belen at the National Championship in Mercer, NJ at the end of May.

Focus on the eyes of a runner. A running man’s eyes can tell you where he has been and where he wants to go. This focused ONE unit of runners will forever show in their eyes what they have accomplished and how relentless their drive to succeed in life now is. A gaze into the focused eyes of any of the 29 runners of the 2009 team will show what it takes to be the best cross country team out of over 500 in Florida of all classes. It is important to mention this was the first time in the program’s 38-year history that this was accomplished throughout the entire season. They captured commanding victories at all the major invitationals and they capped the season off by winning the program’s 4th State Title. This accomplishment marks the first time a Miami Dade County Boys cross country team in 62 years has won 3 consecutive State titles. In addition, this group of men finished the season ranked first amongst all classes with a team average of 15:56 and mere 34 second spread from 1 through 5. The state championship meet squad was lead by Joe Dorfman, followed by Elliot Clemente, Larry Duran, Lazaro Fields, Branden Martinez, Gaby Loret de Mola and Joe Lindsay. It is also worth noting this ONE team attained a Nike Team National ranking of 6th in the Southeast Region. This team goes down in history as being one of the most talented but more importantly it goes down as the most committed, a stare into their focused eyes will clearly show you this.

The Varsity football team finished the season 7-3, as District 16-3A runner-up and advanced to the Regional Playoffs for the 9th time in the past ten years. The season highlights included victories over district rivals Mater, Reagan and Edison. Other wins were against Curley, Dade Christian, Cardinal Newman and an amazing 24-20 come from behind win against a very talented Hallandale team. The losses came at the hands of Naples Gulf Coast, Pace, and Key West. The team took an unusual path to the play-offs. After a controversial loss to Key West in Key West, the Wolverines were forced to go into a three team tiebreaker along with Edison and Key West. Belen had the best record of the three teams and received a bye. Edison defeated Key West 3-0 forcing a one quarter show down with the Wolverines for the playoff spot.

The team held off a late Edison drive and won 7-0 and earning the playoff spot. The senior class of 2009 will have six players taking their talents to the next level. Javier Sosa will be playing at Yale, Max Martinez will be playing at Cornell, Luis Wulff and Tomislav Belfranin will be attending RPI, Javier Chang will be playing at Catholic and Danny Hildalgo will go to Hanover College in Indiana.

The Varsity team was led all year by Senior Roberto Machado. Roberto led a very young team, faced with many challenges, to a winning season ending with a record of 6-4. The highlight of the season was a second place finish in the district tournament, followed by a third place finish in the regional tournament. Machado posted the team’s best score of 77 at regionals in his final round for Belen. Machado also earned thrid team all-county honors from The Miami Herald.

The JV team was led to a 5-2 win-loss record by its three most consistent players; Gerardo Portela, Danny Perez and Patricio Espinosa. The highlight of the season was our two wins against Ransom Everglades. The future for Belen golf looks bright with 16 of our 17 varsity & JV players returning next year.

A time of team adjustment and team leadership that would mark this group of young men and coaches for Belen swimming for “all time”. Being unable to participate with your athletes is a difficult process. Wacthing them “excel and then succeed” goes beyond your wildest imagination. You worry about so many possibilities- but Coach Hastings and Araque were able to pull the boys together and win in a tremendously close battle for a third state championship. Defending a “State Title” creates the excitement. Accomplishing the task with unfamiliar leadership became a strength called overcoming adversity. The original goal of “threepeating” was forgotten and replaced by “can we do it”. That created a season of increased effort on both- athletes and their families and the theme became “we will do it”. It is always adversity that leads us to rise up and meet the challenges that are put before us. Our families and our school have taught us that lesson. This team believed the lesson.

Individual stories along the way are many and will be forever remembered by teammates and families. Listed above are some of the accomplishments performed by the Belen swimmers on the way to the State Championship.

I would like to thank the swimmers, parents, the athletic department and the school administration. A Special thanks to Kyle Hastings for standing up at a difficult time and his effort to help the boys believe in their ability to perform.

Varsity tennis went through a period of adjustment as they lost their #1 player to graduation and introduced a new coach to the team. The season then got off to a rocky start as the team lost to both LaSalle and Palmer Trinity before breaking through and enjoying a winning streak of four matches over district opponents. 8th grader Juan Lorido stepped up to #1 this season and filled that difficult role admirably while returning players Manny Lorenzo, Alex Lazaro, John Pessoa and Stephen Zambrano played hard and newcomer Hector Infante impressed all with his drive to win. Only a loss to eventual state champion Gulliver marred the rest of the season as Wolverine Tennis went 6-3 for the year and outscored their opponents 45-18. The team also placed third in districts. With only one graduating senior, the team is poised to make another great run in 2010.

We had a great season, we won a lot of hard fought games and never gave up. When we thought games were lost the kids stepped it up a notch and surprised us with a win. We attended the Palm Beach Classic and competed in the Gold division, which is the toughest of three divisions. For the second consecutive year we finished in third place out of 32 teams .The improvement of this team from the first day of practice to the last game was night and day, they had their share of ups and downs, including the loss of both setters due to injury for a period of time. Through it all the Wolverines always played hard and gave their best. This team set the bar for volleyball at Belen and I hope next year will be as rewarding as this one.

District Champions 1st Place- Gulliver, Winter Park and DeSmet Tournaments

The Belen Varsity Water Polo team started the year with the goal of winning a State Championship and going undefeated. After five years of hard work, the Wolverines combined a group of experienced players with other younger players to achieve the goal of becoming State Champs and going undefeated 28-0. The Belen Team was led by the charge of Team Captain J.C Lopez, and the starters Jake Bakas, Juan Lopez, Anthony Lopez, Gaspar Barreto, Will Johnson, Mario Carcamo and Goalies Carlos Basnuevo and Caki Padron.

The players Herzen Cortes, Jake Guso, Anthony Kanelidis, John Amy, Matias Galliano, Rick Herrera, and Jonathan Perez when called upon were there to play and help the team reach its goal of continuing to win with no losses.

The Belen Water Polo Team played as a Team and all helped and contributed, It was a team effort. Belen went to Missouri to compete in the DeSmet Jesuit Water Polo Invitational before Districts. The finals could not ask for a better game for the state of Missouri matching Belen vs St. Louis University High School with a 76 game winning streak and no losses in 4 years. Considered by many in Missouri as the best game in 10 years. Belen ended the streak with a 14-10 Victory .

The team had some set backs having lost its starting goalie 4 days prior to the District tournament, not to worry as Caki Padron answered the call and helped Belen defeat Ransom 16-4. Next came the Regional game vs Columbus which proved to be a tough game, as luck would have it our second goalie dislocated his thumb during the game, but the Wolverines prevailed to secure the win and their first trip to the State Tournament. In the state quarter-final game Caki had his hand all taped up and after falling behind early in the game, a staunch defense helped Belen defeat Gulliver 19-9. Next came Hialeah in the semi-finals which Belen went on to win. The final match was set and it was Belen vs Winter Park, who had been to the State Finals for two consecutive years, only to lose to Ransom and Gulliver. This time it was Belen. The game was close at one point by 2 goals but Belen was too much for the Wildcats and went on to win 13-10.

The future of Belen Water Polo looks very good and group of young talent remains along with some veteran players. The outlook looks promising as Belen Water Polo looks to be a premier sport at Belen.

The 2007-2008 Wrestling team was composed of young talent with a promising future. The team finished the season with a 7-3 record. Having an outstanding season was Junior Ricky Rodriguez who finished second in the state in his weight class and Esteban Gomez-Rivera who also finished second in the State. The 2009 Junior Varsity team was one full of youth, potential and talent. As a team there was plenty of room for growth and this season showed a tremendous upside to a young group of players. The season was full of challenges, great competition, and adversity. All of which our team over came. As a unit they showed great togetherness and perseverance on and off the diamond. Towards the end of the season the players rallied behind a fellow teammate who had just lost a loved one. This kind of growth has extended itself pass the baseball field and into the real world.

JV BASKETBALL

The JV Basketball team faced a very difficult schedule this year with only one returning player from last year’s team. This was to be a rebuilding year. With seven 10th graders and six 9th graders the squad accomplished a very good record of 17-4. The team outscored their opponents by an average of 19 points per game and played a very good pressure defense that caused opponents to commit many turnovers.

Season highlights included wins over Monsignor Pace, Palmetto, Edison, Archbishop McCarthy, St. Brendan, Homestead and the Westwood Christian Varsity team. Tough losses were to Columbus and North Broward Prep in a double overtime thriller.

Maurice Boschetti and Jordan Blecher led the team in scoring and steals. Edmond Benedetti and Aurelio Leyva shared the point guard duties and played very well distributing the ball and running the offense. Antonio Ucar and Nicholas Botero provided a strong inside presence both with strong rebounding, scoring, and playing great interior defense. Bryan Perez, Daniel Rincon and Danny Admire were instrumental coming off the bench providing great shooting, defense and leadership. Notable contributions were turned in by Manny Noya, Nicholas Moreiras, Alec Macias and Jordan Fernandez. This team worked extremely hard, was very disciplined, had tremendous dedication and accomplished a very good record of 17-4. This was truly a very enjoyable season.

This year’s freshman eight captured our third consecutive gold medal in the freshman category at the Florida Scholastic Rowing Championship. The program showed great depth by also taking home the silver medal in the freshman 4+ race. This freshman class was the largest in the programs short history. Many of these young athletes were moved up to varsity boats for the state championship. Although we were outmatched by experience this year, they have a head start on other crews as we beginning training for the 2009-2010 season. The freshman 8+ now takes their undefeated season to the Scholastic Rowing Association National Championship, where we plan to earn our first national gold medal.

If one word was to describe the 2008-2009 Belen Junior Varsity JV team it would be character. This team did all the little things to win and it started before the pads were even put on in the weight room and track in the hot summer. Hard work and discipline paid off with big wins over Chaminade, McCarthy, Hialeah Gardens, King’s Academy, and the biggest of all, the manhandling of Monsignor Pace 21-0 at there own field. The defense delivered many memorable big hits and plays as it created many turnovers, held the opponents to an average of 9 points a game, and had 3 key shut outs. The defense was led by Frank Leyva, Frankie Hernandez, and Ricardo Fonseca. Offensively, the team was led by the “Four Headed Monster” of QB Danny Admire, RB Imani Davis, RB Alec Macias, and WR Javier Rodriguez. The team averaged 21 points a game, 302.1 yards rushing, and 157.8 yards passing. The team’s offensive success was due to an outstanding offensive line that was led by Michael Argyris and Kevin Viera. Danny Admire threw 8 touchdowns; Imani Davis led the team in rushing with 857 yards and 8 total touchdowns, Alec Macias added another 734 yards rushing with 2 touchdowns, and Javier Rodriguez led the team in receiving with 668 yards and 6 touchdowns. This team put forth the hard work that will hopefully carry over for when they are older on the varsity.

2009 was the inaugural season for lacrosse at Belen and it was a great start! The team was given the green light to start the club in early January and within 2 weeks, there were close to 50 student-athletes performing conditioning drills 3-4 times a week. Very few students had lacrosse sticks or equipment and less than 4 had ever played the game before - however within 4 weeks the guys were going to face a schedule of teams from schools where lacrosse has been played for years. The guys stepped up to the challenge and were extremely competitive in every scrimmage and game played. Against both Coral Reef and Killian - the score was tied going into the 4th quarter of both games. The squad was filled with students from 8th to 12th grade and the starting lines had students from each of these grades in them. Belen is the talk of the South Florida lacrosse community, from the opposing coaches to the US Lacrosse representatives that serve Florida - the level of lacrosse that Belen displayed was beyond expectations. The team will be working very hard this off season in preparation for the 2010 campaign with student’s attending various camps, summer/ fall leagues, and select teams. Go Belen!

During the 2009 season the team played six games. Three versus district rival Ransom Everglades and three versus Gulliver Prep. The team came out on top in five of those six games. It is the first time we had our team finish in first place. This is a great group of players that shows a promising future.

The 2008-2009 freshman basketball campaign was one that could be described as a “character builder.” The Wolverines struggled at times to find consistency, and remained a work in progress. Nevertheless, the team displayed a willingness to confront their challenges, even when playing shorthanded during the last half of the season. Standout players Peter Cirera, Kevin Valiente, and Frankie Castro led the squad through big wins against rivals Monsignor Pace, Gulliver Prep, and Cardinal Gibbons, while tough losses to St. Thomas Aquinas and American Heritage of Plantation motivated them to improve. Hopefully the lessons learned from the 2008-2009 schedule will serve the young Wolverines well in the seasons to come.

The Belen wolverine gold junior high team finished a dominating season on the diamond. A holistic team effort and hard work in practice translated to continuous success throughout the season. With a 17-0-1 record the Wolverines consistently out-played and out-performed their opponents in every aspect of the game. With great pitching and a balanced offense, boasting a team batting average over .450 and over 180 runs scored, the gold squad easily was the ALL Catholic Conference Champions. The future looks very promising for this group as they hit the high school stage and continue to successfully represent the blue and gold.

The Wolverines finished with a strong showing, ending the season with an 8-5-1 record. The blue team was lead at the plate by catcher Mike Cabezas, who finished the season with a .528 batting average and led the Wolverines in almost every other hitting category. Limited by pitching, one player stood out and allowed the team to compete every time he was on the mound. Eric Artigues led the pitching staff with a 3-2 record, 22 strikeouts and a 4.34 ERA. Thanks to the players for a great season the future looks promising for the Wolverines.

The Junior High Gold Basketball Team finished the season with a record of 17-4 and as the ACC Regular Season Champions. The team began with a 3rd place finish at the Columbus Preseason Tournament, then bounced back to go undefeated in the regular season and capture the ACC Regular Season Championship. The team had a fifteen game winning streak that included an overtime win over Ransom. This year’s team averaged 45 pts while allowing only 25 pts per game using half court trap pressure and man to man defense.

The team was led by captains: Michael Fernandez leading scorer with 200+ points, scored double figures in 13 games and Javy Alvarez which was the second leading scorer with 100+ points, leading 3 pt shooter with 15 made 3 pointers while only playing in 15 games. Austin Riveron handled the point guard duties, while scoring 100+ points and leading the team in assists while handling the ball. Willy Pujals was the teams leading rebounder and was fourth in scoring.

Guards Eric Cuoto, Hector Ortiz, Jason Gutierrez, and steals leader Robbie Cosio added athleticism, great outside shooting and contributed to great guard play. While Matthew Cristobal, Alex Diblasi, and Vincent Vazquez added size and rebounding inside. Anthony Sierra, Guillermo Cueto, and Christian Suarez provided scoring and handled the ball effectively for the team.

Next year’s team will rely on 7th graders Christian Barrial and Alejandro Portela, the teams six and seventh leading scorers respectively to lead them through another winning season. This year’s team used their talent and a refuse to lose attitude that resulted with impressive wins over: Doral Academy, American Heritage, St. Theresa, and Epiphany. The team’s most thrilling win was when they won on a buzzer beater shot by Willy Pujals to give them a 33-32 win over Ransom.

The Belen Jesuit Junior High Basketball Blue Team sent a message early in the season, and that message was, “We are here.” In their first regular season game of the season, the team took on an Epiphany team with a much larger advantage, its size. Despite this, the team worked hard to match the physicality and intensity, and snatch rebounds. The Blue team went on to win (a game many thought they couldn’t) against Epiphany and began their season. This year’s team was a pleasure to coach, a team that knew they had to work hard, but enjoyed having fun as well. Defense characterized early victories, led by Andres Perez who guarded opposing point guards and disrupted the opposing teams’ offensive system. As the season went on, the team began to understand and execute the offensive scheme, posting a 50 point game against Ransom. Offensively with Johnny Medina’s long range shooting, Billy Candela and Nicholas Iparraguirre running the offense, Jose Smith’s quiet work ethic and Matthew Vega-Sanz, and Nick Fernandez providing the sparks off the bench, the team progressed successfully on the offensive end. Though heartbreak did rear its head against this team, as the two buzzer beater losses against St. Timothy, and an overtime loss against St. Brendan, the team persevered to an admirable 9-4 record. From Alex Alvarez’s buzzer beater against St. Kevin, to Matthew Marrero’s three 3-pointers against Ransom, the team went 15 deep, and everyone contributed to winning games, but most importantly having a good time while doing so.

The Wolverines stormed back this season with a couple of goals in mind, which included taking back the Dade County title that was lost in 2007. The cross country team won the Dade County Championship by placing four guys in the top 11 spots and besting second place by 39 points. The runners never gave up and kept pushing each other to become better. This competition for the top seven is one of the main ingredients in the success of the program. The Wolverines were led by Elias Monsalve, who exploded at the end of the season to win four consecutive races, including a victory over the Dade County Champion, and Javier Alvarez who persevered through injury to give his best and they were closely followed by Michael Magoulas, Andy Fernandez, Kevin Montiel, Jose Roca, Alex Isaac, Tuto Mejer, Steven Tyler ad Julio Diaz. With the upcoming group of seventh graders, the team looks to do well in 2009.

The Middle School Hockey team Joined the newly formed South Florida Scholastic Inline hockey organization this season. The competition was the best we have ever played against. It also brought out the best in all the players. An incredible 9-2 record qualified us to play in the South Florida Championship at the Bank Atlantic Center. Michael Aguad was the league’s leading scorer, and Matthew Diaz the top defender. Aguad and Mike Tefel were chosen to Play for the Florida Panthers Junior Hockey Team.

The Junior High Soccer team were the undefeated champions of the league. They were the best that we had to offer in this category. Their defense was amazing thus allowing the team to spend most of its time in the offensive side of the field. Belen definitely has the puzzle pieces to put together future great seasons.

JH SWIMMING

With the loss of eight 8th graders last season, this was to be a rebuilding year, but as luck has it, it was meant to be, for the Belen Swimming program and be crowned champs this year. The team was led by team Captain Jake Guso, and the main core of 8th graders Evan Banciella, David Capetillo, Herzen Cortes, Manny Corbea and Andrew Williams, who provided leadership and great work ethic for the team and set the tone from the first invitational. The season started with a disappointed loss to Gulliver in the Westminister Invitational, but the kids quickly forgot about that. They started training harder and were more dedicated than ever, crushing the opponents in the Belen and Ransom Invitational almost doubling the 2nd place team points in both. Following those two invitational’s, came the Miami Independent Middle School Championship which they won by a convincing 35 points. They won their dual meets by an average of 65 points and leading up to the biggest event of the season, the Middle School Youth Fair; they had one thing on their mind, 1st place. After they were crowned Middle School Youth Fair Champs for a record 13th time, they left no doubt that there were the best swim team in Miami Dade County. Along with very successful season, they left behind two records, one for most points scored at Middle School Youth Fair (449) and largest margin of victory at the Middle School Youth Fair (193). It would only be right that a team this dominating would leave their mark in the history books. This team had so much depth, that it looks very promising for next season. With a huge group of very talented 6th graders and the leadership of the soon to be 8th graders, we look to have a very successful season next year. The best thing about this year was the fact that all the parents united as a family, and made everything so easy. Without the parent’s dedication and effort, it might not have been possible. This season was overshadowed by the absence of Varsity Coach Kirk Peppas, but this was FOR YOU KIRK!

The Middle School Tennis team is already the veterans of two cuts from a total of fifty players that tried out. While the season was short, the competition was fierce as they went up against South Florida powerhouses Gulliver and Ransom Everglades. A hard fought victory over Westminster Christian has the highlight of the year. At each match, the boys provided an example of good sportsmanship, hard play and team spirit. With great, young players such as Bryan Rodriguez, Raul Cruz and Esteban Bruna, the Middle School Tennis Team is poised for success in many years to come.

The discus throwers and shot put team was strong and deep in numbers, at every meet it was a toss to see who would be the first to represent the team. Seventh grader Alex Cortes, lead the team by throwing and winning in the shot and discus for both ACC and Tri-County, along with advancing to the Flrunners Middle School State Meet. Vikram Sairam, Willie Pujals, Jose Smith, Juan Rodriguez, Salvador Cisneros, Kevin Cuellar, and Miguel Torres de Navarra, all contributed to the field event team.

Sprinters and hurdlers were very strong this year. We had 7 athletes that actually broke sixty second in the 400 meter dash. Bernie Manrique ran the 100m dash (12.54), 200m (25.2) taking down the ACC Championship, in both events. Mateo Buraglia was also a solid performer, although he suffered through an injury in the season he was still able to run 56.89 in the 400, and 25.00 in the 200. Nick Fernandez dominated in the boys’ long jump, along with 100m hurdles.

The distance team shined around the track, lead by Elias Monsalve, who high jumped at 5’4”, as well as running the 1600m (5:11.04), and 800m (2:18.72). Javier Alvarez pushed Monsalve to be the best that he was; always just one second behind him, keeping Monsalve on his game at all times.

Congratulations to the 4x800m relay team that went undefeated this year, team members were Kevin Montiel, Elias Monsalve, Javier Alvarez, Gabriel Von der Osten, and Diego Rojo. Along with the 4x400 relay team that ran a season’s best of 4:01.46 of those members were: Diego Rojo, Christian Barrial, Eric De Cardenas and Bernie Manrique. The best 4x100m relay (51.22) team was represented by: Christian Barrial, Nick Fernandez, Eric De Cardenas, and Cesar Rebolledo. What a great season as we the Belen Wolverines continue to set the standard of excellence!

The 6th grade team was an outstanding group of kids. It was an honor to coach this bunch. The future looks bright for the wolverine program. This squad turned some heads at the two preseason tournaments and never looked back when the ACC season began. The team went undefeated in the ACC posting a record of 10-0 in the season, and ending the season with a 14-3-1 record. Thanks to all the parents for letting the coaching process take its course and to all the players thank you for a great season and for always giving your all.

We are very fortunate to have a basketball program that starts at the sixth grade level. This is my sixth year coaching sixth grade basketball and I have seen the development of my former players through the years and become a big part of our program. This year’s sixth grade team is no different, consisting of players that with hard work and dedication will definitely be a part of Belen basketball for a long time.

The 2008 baby Wolverines had a record of nine wins and three losses. This was a no nonsense type of group, they worked hard and listened. The three losses suffered by the baby Wolverines, were at the hands of two strong rivals, Epiphany and St. Agatha. One of the highlights of the season was when the team came together after a tough loss to St. Agatha to beat them in a highly contested game.

I’m very proud of this team, it was a pleasure to coach them. I know I’ll be seeing them as part of Belen Jesuit basketball, for many years to come.

They were able to surprise some teams and win the Arch. Carroll Invitational and place third for two weeks in a row at the ACC Championship and the Tri-County Championship. The sixth grade team was small in numbers but powerful in performance. With a strong effort we completed a winning season, lead by both Brandon Sierra who achieved a personal best in the 400m dash (1:07.35) and 200m dash (30.62), and Joshua Lascano placed 1st in the ACC Tri-County, in high jump and 2nd in the 400m with a time of 1:08.75. In the distance runs Nick Peterson and Matthew Mullin-Garcia showed the wolverine power. The 60m hurdlers, Brandon Borino, and Jorge Borron also represented well. Fernando Molina and Mark White threw shot and discus for the team and scored points assisting the Tri-County win. Other members of the team Giovanni Gaviria, Otto Boudet, Matthew Diaz, Hector Formoso-Murias, Michael Limia, and Mariano Macias all contributed great efforts throughout the season.
