Dear Student-Athletes,

It is with great pleasure that I address you today. Belen Jesuit’s mission is to guide and support our students in their process of becoming men who are open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving, and committed to doing justice. I believe that this mission is exemplified through our student-athletes.

As a student-athlete you push your bodies to the limit and your work ethic is second to none. You listen to your coaches and are willing to embrace new techniques and plays. As a student-athlete at Belen Jesuit, you are held to a higher standard. You are expected to do well in school, while excelling in the field, pool, or arena. We beat our opponents both physically and mentally. I love to see how our teams either unite together in Mass or in prayer before games. You have embodied what our founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola, envisioned - a well-rounded student who seeks God in all things and succeeds for the Greater Glory of God. I commend you and your coaches for keeping God in your activities. I believe that I am most proud for the way we win, while adhering to the rules. We play by the rules, take blame for our mistakes, and correct them as soon as possible. I cannot ask more of our student-athletes and coaches.

The accomplishments of our sports program from the sixth grade level through the varsity level are numerous. The Sixth Grade and Junior High program continue with its domination of both ACC and non-ACC teams. Championships in cross-country, basketball, soccer, baseball, track and field, and swimming were achieved through the hard work of our young athletes and their coaches. This is most apparent with our middle school track and field team winning the state title for the second year in a row. The future looks bright as our middle school students become our high school athletes in the coming years.

The High School program also continued its recent success with another great year. The varsity football, basketball, cross country, track and field, swimming, wrestling, and volleyball teams advanced into the state playoff system once again. State champions were crowned in swimming and cross-country for the second year in a row.

I could not be prouder of our student-athletes, coaches and parents. May the Holy Spirit continue to guide us in all we do, and may we always strive to achieve our best in both the academic ad athletic arenas.

A MESSAGE FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Our sport program enjoyed another outstanding season. Our varsity teams had a combined record of 145 wins and 50 losses. Not a single one of our 13 varsity sports recorded a losing season. The highlights of the year were our varsity cross country and swimming teams successfully defending their State Championships. Winning back to back tittles is a school’s first. Our cross country and swimming teams also went on to win Dade County Youth Fair Championships symbolic of the County’s best. Both teams along with our varsity track and field teams recorded undefeated regular seasons.

Other notable team achievements were the varsity track and field winning District and Region titles, as well as finishing among the top 10 teams in the State. The Jr. high cross country and track teams won state titles, the freshman crew team won 1st place in the state competition as well as the team finishing second in the scholastic division. The jr. varsity basketball recorded an undefeated season; the football, basketball and water polo teams finished as district runners up as well as our basketball team defeating rival Columbus in an exciting game. The volleyball team had the biggest turn around in their history and in the process they recorded the biggest upset of the year when they defeated State play off bound Columbus. The varsity roller hockey team was crowned as Dade County Champions.

The 2007-2008 school year also had some coaching milestones. Coach Richard Stuart was surprised with a special dinner honoring his 25 years as a varsity head coach at Belen and enjoys the longest tenure of any Dade County Coach in the Sport. Athletic Director Carlos Barquin was inducted to the John R. Wooden “Wall of Honor”. Coach Frankie Ruiz and Kirk Peppas are the favorites to win Miami Herald Dade County “Coaches of the Year” awards.

Our Athletes also continue to excel at all levels as evident with Carlos Araque winning back to back individual titles in the 100 breaststroke while participating in a winning relay and leading Belen Jesuit to back to back State Championships in swimming. Guillermo Echarte has been named as a Miami Herald Scholar Athlete of the year finalist, he finished in second place at the State Championships for cross country and track (3,200, 4 X 800 relay). Guillermo also led the team in successfully defending their Cross Country State Championship. Both of these athletes will be competing at the next level in division I schools. Diego Fernandez-Soto, Anthony Diblasi, Richard Sanz, and Andres Simauchi have signed with Ivy League schools.

At the middle school division our teams continue to be dominant and Belen Jesuit continues to have what is arguably the best overall athletic middle school program in Dade County.

NEW PROJECTS: Belen Jesuit has purchased 3.7 acres located west of the varsity baseball field. This piece of land will house new tennis courts, grass practice fields and a jogging path. Other projects for the future are the building of a 50 meter swimming complex with a learn to swim area as well as a larger weight room, wrestling room and a multiple use indoor/outdoor facility.

The Varsity Baseball team was off to another season of high expectations and hopes. Coming from winning a District and Regional title a year ago, they gave fans just what they expected. The team was ranked #4 in the state, in class 4A, throughout the whole season & finished with a record of 17 wins and 7 losses. Senior Lucas Calderon was the M.V.P., leading the team with 9 Homeruns and setting the school’s single season homerun record and was a First Team All County selection . The coaches award is shared by Yoe Lopez which led the team in hitting and Chris de Goti who was one of the teams best pitchers and signed with Tufts University. Byron Soler, the starting catcher the last 4 years signed with Samford University, the shortstop Nick Martinez signed with Fordham University and Pitcher Marco Mejia with St. Louis University. The coaches want to thank all the players and parents for their hard work and support towards Belen Baseball, without you this season would not have been great one.

The Varsity Basketball team completed another successful season with a record of 19 wins and 10 losses. The team earned the district runner up trophy, while never losing more than two games in a row throughout the season. Victories against Columbus, Palmetto, Santaluces, McCarthy, and Curley highlighted a solid season. The team also earned the highest GPA in the State of Florida for basketball teams.

The team was led by Antonio Quezada and Diego Fernandez-Soto. Tony averaged 10.4 points and 6 assists per game, while Diego contributed with 10.8 points per game and shot a team high 42% from the three point arc. Jonathan Fernandez added 7.4 points and 6 rebounds per game while consistently playing against bigger centers. Michael Garcia contributed with 9.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Injuries to Andre Garcia and Michael Newmeyer ended superb seasons for both. Their constant support after their injuries helped carry the team during tough stretches.

Sophomores Pablo Alvarez and Nicholas Santurio offered much needed help throughout the season. Pablo averaged 8.5 points per game after stepping in for an injured Andre Garcia and Nick supplied effective backup minutes as point guard. Oscar Londoño’s relaxed nature brought a calming effect to the team. Danny Ramos, Alex Duarte, Jorge Menocal, and Alfonso Aguila contributed individually to the team’s success as well.

Although the team will lose nine seniors to graduation, the team’s outlook is bright with a strong sophomore and junior class coming up.

In the program’s 8th year of competition we are firmly established as one of the dominant programs in the state. This year Belen Crew was once again the scholastic state runner-up at the Florida Scholastic Rowing Championship. These results were the culmination of a very difficult schedule where we traveled most of the spring to Orlando and Tampa in order to race the fastest programs in the state. The team is very satisfied with its efforts this year, but has a strong understanding of the challenges for the future. This year we graduate the largest and most outstanding class in the program’s history. Through their leadership, the team’s physical abilities, racing capacities, and expectations have been raised to a very high level. They have blazed a clear path for the young rowers that follow. Most of all they have exemplified the foundation of any great rowing program: The success of the team is valued over all individual accomplishments.

The team captured county, district, regional and the Florida State 2A Title! At the state meet the team was made up of a good mix of experience and new young talent. At the helm was Senior Guillermo Echarte, followed by Juniors Joseph Dorfman and Larry Duran. Closely behind these guys was 8th grade sensation Elliot Clemente, who ran a 16:40 5K at state in aggressive fashion. At number 5 we had one of our most consistent and improved runners Lazaro Fields, who is also a Junior. At number 6 and 7 there was Senior Michael Cruz and Freshman Gaby Loret de Mola. The top 7 runners earned their spots after heavy pressure from the supporting crew of JV talent. The team’s successes are credited in part to the support of the entire pack of Belen cross country runners. All in all, this team of young runners put together an impressive and commanding 42 point performance at the state meet in Dade City, Florida. It was their day to control and that they did in relentless determination with a fearless focused state of mind. The announcer yelled after our 5th runner crossed the line: “Belen just slammed the door”. The rest is history, as now Belen holds 3 State Cross Country Team Titles.

The Varsity Football team finished the season 7-3, as district 16-3A runner-up and advanced to the regional playoffs for the 7th time in the past eight seasons. The season highlights included victories over district rivals Key West, Mater, Reagan and a 28 to 0 win over district newcomer Edison High School. Other wins were against Gulf Coast, Archbishop Curley and Calvary Christian.

The team started the season with a crushing 13 to 12 PRESEASON loss to Columbus. The game was only lost on the scoreboard as the wolverines thoroughly outplayed the explorers on both sides of the ball. Other losses came at the hands of Pace, Cardinal Newman and Hallandale.

The Senior class of 2008 did an outstanding job of leading this team through the good times and the tough times. As a result they will be remembered as being one of the most successful football classes in Belen history. This group had a three year record of 27 wins and only 6 losses.

The coaching staff would like to thank all the parents for their outstanding support and for being the best and loudest fans of any high school in South Florida.

The 2007 season was very successful. We achieved a record of 8 and 2 and placed in the top 4 of all of our big events with a second at districts and a 3rd at regionals. We are very excited for the future and truly believe that it is very bright considering our young talent. Some of our golfers achievements were: Richie Massa who had an great consistent season finishing with a 9 hole scoring average of 36.7 and place no less than tenth in any event throughout the year. He placed 2nd at youth fair with a round of 70, 4th at districts with a 75 and 10th at regionals with a 75. Charlie Melendez who played in the 4th spot last year stepped his game up to play the number 2 position with a 9 hole scoring average of 37.6 and a 18 scoring average of 76.8 by far the most improvement I have seen in a one year span. He placed 4th at youth fair with a 74 and 6th at districts with a 76. Roberto Machado who played our 3 spot had a 9 hole scoring average of 39.2. He shot the low 9 hole round of the year with a 33 and placed 10 at regionals with a 75 to cap of the year.

We believe that our kids gained many attributes that will help them in their future both on but specially off the course.

Our JV golf season was highlighted by victories over Ransom and Gulliver. The team had a 6-0 record and was led by our top 2 players Guillermo Quirch and Oscar Cabanas.

Dade County Champions

It started out slowly as it usually does for the Varsity Team, but what a finish it was. After a moderately successful regular season, they really came together in the Playoffs. Blowing by Palmetto 10-2, Coral Reef 11-5 and finally defeating a powerhouse Killian team 7-2 to become Dade County Champions. This was the first Belen team to be accepted in the Florida In-line Scholastic Hockey League, as well as earning an invitation to the Broward Cup tournament. The program owes a great deal to the seniors graduating this year. Tony Aguad and Nicholas Mouriz have been there since 6th Grade and have been the cornerstone of the program’s success throughout their years at the school, without them there would not have been a hockey program. Albert Sueiras has been with the team since 9th Grade. Adrian Perez has been on the team since his sophomore season, and we owe much of our success to his goal scoring. In all it was without a doubt the most successful season since the inception of the Hockey Program in 2001.

We had good season, even though the team lost in the district semifinals to the eventual District champion. The season had its ups and downs and the winter break proved to be a small stumbling block for the team. The team scored 35 goals while only allowing 15. They also had important wins that showed other schools in the area that Belen soccer will be a force in the near future. Congratulations to all the players for giving it all they had in each game. Through hard work and determination the team will be successful in the future.

The Second Consecutive State Swimming Championship for Belen Jesuit Sports Community. A season of Senior leadership and determination from an outstanding team. The pressure of “Defending a “State Title” and all of the excitement to accomplish the task was the drive over the entire season. The goal of repeating at State created a season of increased effort on both - athletes and their families. It is truly a time to relish and remember for our School and our Families. The history of Belen swimming will always be anchored to the athletes from previous generations . They set the standard for the “Goals” and created the “work ethic” to achieve at the level of our current performance. We honor Michael Covert and Joseph Zumpano who were recently inducted to the Sports Hall of Fame for pioneering Belen swimming excellence. We look forward to future inductees!!

Defending the 2006 Championship was the Goal. The individual stories along the way are many and will be forever shared by this year’s team. Listed are the accomplishments by our members. They were many by the most dominating group to ever graduate from Belen School. Eight Seniors, with five of them participating and scoring at the State Championships will be graduating this year. They have been our backbone forever it seems. They will be hard to replace (Carlos Araque, Victor Lopez Cantera, Andres Simauchi, Sebastian Orozco, Patrick Arenson, Diego Donna, Tulio Alvarez-Burgos, Carlos Fonseca). Thank you Gentlemen.

We defended our Fifth “District Championship” and our Fifth “Dade County Championship” in a row and our Third “Regional Championship. This year will also mark our Fifth “Undefeated “ Dual meet season. Our Varsity Tennis Team record was 9-3. We had a very successful season finishing third in District competition. Our Seniors helped carry the way for us. We are losing Roland Martinez and William Gomez to graduation and they will be missed. We had good seasons from retuning players Alex Lazaro, Chris Robelo and Juan Lorido. With returning players from this year’s team we are hoping to improve our season record and placing in the district tournament next year. Our Tennis Team record since 1975 is 325-129. The team suffered a grave loss during the middle of the season with the passing of Coach Foster. He battled cancer for 8 months. He was an example of outstanding leadership, courage, and hope. His total commitment and fighting spirit will live on. Thanks to the help of coaches Victor, Gerry and Tammy as well as the leadership of the Senior class, the team went on to have an outstanding year, highlighted by the Regional Championship for the second consecutive year. Excellent performances were turned in by state medal winners Guillermo Echarte, Robert Aran, Randy Fabre, Larry Duran, Joe Dorfman, Pablo Alvarez and state qualifiers Brien Garcia, Nick Herrera and Javier Rodriguez.

VARSITY VOLLEYBALL

What a beautiful and blessed season! This Varsity Volleyball team started growing with one heart as a unique team. In the beginning it was kind of hard because Belen’s volleyball team hadn’t seen a winning season in a long time. But now things are different. At the local tournament we beat teams from Broward that were ranked top 20 in the state and we were 95. Then we beat teams in our district like Columbus and Miami High, and qualified for district tournament for the first time ever since the FHSAA began the State Playoff Series in 2003. We also went to the Palm Beach Classic and beat Jupiter that was ranked 3rd in state. We beat Sunset and we went to the Gold division and finished in 3rd place. We went all the way to reaching a ranking 20th in the state. And in the district, we finished in 3rd place with a record of 15-8.

District Runner-up; 1st Place- Gulliver Tour.

The Belen Varsity Water Polo team this year started the year with some injuries and some set backs.The team finished with a 19-4 overall record. They lost to Ransom in the District final which proved to be the best in the State of Florida. The only team to defeat Ransom this year was Belen. The team fell short on its trip to States by losing to Ransom 10-6.

There were some positive things that did happen, in the Gulliver Invitational Belen had two starters out and had to play two back up players that proved to be the good formula as they went on to beat Gulliver and Ransom on the same day and took home the Championship trophy. It was the first time the Wolverines defeated Gulliver in the History of the Water Polo program.

The team returns all its players except one Senior Andres Simauchi. Returning are Seniors J.C. Lopez, Jake Bakas, Juan Lopez, David Fonseca, Gaspar Barreto, Anthony Kanelidis, Ricky Herrera . Also returning will be starters; Anthony Lopez, Mario Carcamo, and Will Johnson.

Expectations are high for next year as there are plans to play in Puerto Rico during Spring Break. Belen Finished the season ranked #2 in the state. The team went undefeated in the Winter Park Tournament in Orlando and undefeated at the Gulliver Tournament.

The 2007-2008 Wrestling team was composed of young talent. They were very tough and show great promise for the future. The team finished the season with a 6-6 record and as District Runner-ups. Having an outstanding season was Junior Ricky Rodriguez who finished second in the state in his weight class. Also qualifying for the State Tournament was Senior Amado Nieto, who had a great career for the Wolverines. Outstanding young wrestlers were Esteban Gomez-Rivera and Joshua Lopez. If this group keeps working hard the future looks bright for the Wolverine Wrestling program.

The 2008 Belen Wolverines J.V. Baseball season started with a lot of promise. The Wolverines were loaded with talent and fully expected to have a great season. The J.V. Wolverines were blessed to continue the rich tradition finishing once again with another winning season. (9-6-1). We were fast out of the gates winning our first three games in a row. The streak came to an emphatic end and unfortunately the momentum could not carry us any further. We were stunned by a heartbreaking tie game against Mater Academy which appeared to affect the team greatly. This led us into the second half of the season where we encountered many ups and downs. Fortunately we regrouped and joyfully finished off the season with three consecutive well earned wins.

JV BASKETBALL

The J.V. Basketball team faced a very difficult schedule this year, but managed for only the second time in school history to go undefeated with a record of 19-0. The team outscored their opponents by an average of 30 points per game, and played a tenacious full court pressure defense that caused the opponents to commit many turnovers. On offense a fast break style attack enabled a lot of easy scoring opportunities. This style of play wore down many teams.

Season highlights included wins over Monsignor Pace, Palmetto, Sunset, Bishop Verot of Ft. Myers, Braddock, Edison and Archbishop McCarthy. But by far the most impressive win of the season was defeating the Columbus J.V. by the score of 66 to 48 in front of a packed gym at FIU. This was the first time in school team history that the J.V. defeats Columbus.

Reggie Colas and Sergio Fernandez-Soto led the team in scoring and steals. Manny Sicre, the starting point guard led the team in assists and was a defensive specialist. Alfredo Latour, Arturo Martinez and Jason Fernandez were dominant inside with rebounding and gave us a good inside presence. Maurice Boschetti was instrumental coming off the bench and providing great three point shooting. Notable contributions were turned in by Kevin Portillo, Stefano Natali, Danny Prida, Ryan Garcia, Jonathan Goodman, Andrew Alvarado and Ernie Sanz.

The unselfish style of play, hard work and dedication of this team was remarkable. The motto of the team said it all “We not me.”

In the programs 8th year of competition we are firmly established as one of the dominant programs in the state. This year Belen Crew was once again the scholastic state runner-up at the Florida Scholastic Rowing Championship. The Freshman 8+ made a huge contribution to our overall team standing by winning gold at States. This is the second year in a row that Belen has taken the Freshman trophy back to Miami. With the strength of a strong novice program, we plan to continue this trend for several years.

The State results were the culmination of a very difficult schedule where we traveled most of the spring to Orlando and Tampa in order to race the fastest programs in the state. The team is very satisfied with its efforts this year, and has a strong understanding of the challenges for the future. We must continue to build upon the success of our youngest athletes.

While the record of 4-3 might not show it, this year’s JV football team had a great season. The team had to overcome the loss of as many as ten key players to the varsity team. The spots were filled by some returning sophomores, and hard working freshman. Coach Wooten’s hard summer workouts gave the team an advantage to succeed late in games. This was best exemplified when the defense was able to shut down Key West’s explosive offense late in the fourth quarter to hold on for the win.

While the defense was able to hold opponents to 11 points per game the returning offense put up a more than startling solid 21 points per game. Led by two returning starters on the offensive line; Christian Cruz and Chris Dominguez, returning starting corner Jose Moreiras and returning starting quarterback Eddie Franca, the team had plenty of veteran leadership. The team finished with successful season forming a tight bond as a team.

Dade County Champions Led County in Goals and least goals allowed.

The Junior Varsity team has been remarkable. In the last three years, they have had two undefeated seasons and three Dade County Championships. Even though the competition has been getting better, this JV squad is the elite group in the County. They have been the team that everyone circles on their schedule. Once again this year they breezed through the playoffs, defeating Palmetto and Robert Morgan. In the Championship game, they overcame a three goal deficit against Coral Reef and eventually won, five minutes into overtime to earn the title.

Although playing a fewer number of games due to the shortage of referees in Miami-Dade County, the team made the best of the situation and had a successful season. This well rounded group that consisted of a nice mix between 8th, 9th and 10th graders learned the basic elements that will make them better players in the future. They scored 23 goals while only allowing seven.

The Freshman Basketball Team enjoyed a successful season due to the spirited play of all 12 members who blended their talents and efforts each game. Led by the outstanding backcourt tandem of point guard Edmond Benedetti and leading scorer Jordan Blecher, the Wolverines displayed an unselfish style of play that was instrumental in the team's nine victories. The versatility of the team was evident throughout the season, as it managed high-scoring shootouts along with defensive struggles to achieve its victories. Notable contributions were made by forwards Gianni Blustein, Danny Rincon, and Nicholas Botero as well as centers Antonio Ucar and Nick White. Signature victories during the 2007-2008 campaign included fourth quarter comeback wins over North Broward Prep and Monsignor Pace. With continued development and focus, these Wolverines are poised to make their mark on Belen's rich basketball tradition.

The Junior High Gold team ended its season at 12-0-1. They outscored their opponents a combined 138- 40 in 13 games. The lineup was strong all year long, and the pitching was outstanding. This was a complete team effort with great talent and great discipline. With a team batting average of .502 and 19 homeruns the future of the Belen Baseball program looks very promising.

Our Junior High Baseball blue team consisted mainly of 7th graders and a few 8th graders, each and everyone of these players contributed to this season’s winning record. The team showed a whole lot of character and determination through out the season while successfully competing against mostly older and a more experienced opposition. This is most evident in how they turned around a dismal 1 and 4 start to the season and finished the year winning 5 of the last 6 to end the season with a (6-5-1) record. Despite the ups and downs all the players showed resilience and good attitudes towards the games and practices. I would like to thank each and every one of my guys for a great season and wish all of you the best . I would especially like to thank the parents for keeping the guys in line and on time for the games and practices. Thank you all for your support, keep working hard and good things will come out of it.

Spirit, hard work, determination, discipline and team play are all words and phrases that could be used to describe the 2007-2008 Junior High Gold Basketball team as it finished another successful season with a record of 27-4.

The Junior High Wolverines were nothing short of tenacious and proved that a commitment to defense and a strong transition game on offense are a tough combination to beat. After a challenging start to the season, the team regrouped for a 3rd place finish at the Christopher Columbus Tournament, completed their third consecutive undefeated ACC regular season, avenged earlier defeats against Ransom-Everglades and King’s Academy with double digit victories, and finished the season with a hard-fought, 10 point win over Ransom in the Palmer-Trinity Tournament Championship game. The Gold Team was down 12-0 to start the game, and overcame a 10-point deficit at halftime to win.

The team was led by a strong core of 8th graders, including team captain and returning player Danny Admire, who was named to the All-Star Team for the Palmer Tournament, Alex Pis-Dudot, the team’s leading scorer, starting center Kevin Valiente, starting guards Alec Macias and Julian Legido, and 7th grade point guard Javier Alvarez. An impressive supporting group came off the bench, including 8th graders Frankie Castro, Alex De Goti, Jordan Fernandez, Alex “Skittles” Arenas, Gaby Sanchez, and Manny Noya, to achieve the squad’s 3rd consecutive 25+ win season. 7th Grader Austin Riveron and Alvarez will return next year to lead another great season.

The Belen Jesuit Junior High Blue Basketball Team enjoyed one of it's most successful seasons ever, a season that began with a second-place finish at the Annual Columbus Basketball ACC Classic. Paced by hard-nosed defense and a fast-paced offensive style, the squad frustrated opponents en route to a 15-6 record. Balanced scoring on offense was also key, and the team often got key contributions from both starters and substitutes.

"The one thing of which I am most proud is the fact that this team steadily improved from the beginning of the season to its end," said Head Coach Danny Lopez. "Our goal was to walk away from every practice having learned something or improved in just one facet, and I think we did that consistently."

Defensively the team was led by Gaby Ramos and Javier Obregon, who were often given the task of guarding the opponents' best scorers. Both did a terrific job playing tough, disciplined man-to-man defense, and the team provided great support in keeping offensive players in check. Offensively, Michael Fernandez and Andres Sanchez provided consistent scoring, while guards Gerry Portela and Robby Cosio shouldered much of the team's ball-handling duties. Each game, however, it seemed that someone else made plays to help the team win. "Every game, someone different did something positive to help us win," said Rene Persaud, the team's Assistant Coach. "Some guys played more than others, but everyone played a role and was a part of the success that we enjoyed."

Keeping up with tradition the Wolverine harriers came back this season with great expectations. They were undefeated in the ACC season but fell short at the Dade County Youth Fair and the Ransom Invitational to Ransom. The highlight of the season was winning for the second year in a row the Flrunners. com State meet. Elliot Clemente and Branden Martinez finished 1-2 at the meet and were given their awards by American mile record holder Alan Webb. Both runners proved to be key members to the Varsity’s State Championship squad, because of this other members of the team like Cristian Jimenez, Livio Fernandez, Javier Alvarez and Guillermo Herrera had to step up their performances. With all their hard work they had time to take care of business and have a little fun.

This is the first Junior High Team that the Roller Hockey Program has ever had and they have shown great potential. Finishing the season in second place, the junior high team has shown themselves to be a bright future for the hockey program. This team has shown that a bunch of kids who have never played together can become a very powerful team. Led by the captain Nick Novo this team was able to make it to the championship game.

The Junior High Soccer team were the undefeated champions of the league. The team that had the best season was the one that kept a well balanced squad. The defense was the strength of the team allowing only five goals all year, the midfield moved the ball well and kept the passing lanes open all the time and the offense was demolishing to the oponents defense scoring 54 goals. These three groups combined to produce the outstanding season that culminated with a championship.

With a third year coach, the JH swim team knew what it had to do to succeed. With a large group of 8th graders leaving for the JV team, they stepped up this season and set personal bests in all their events. Julian Ballestas, set a school record in the 50 free, and led the team to 3 second places invitational competitions. With a supporting casts of Danny Ruiz, Boleck De-Pawlikowski, Christian Gomez and others, Belen was able to finish 3rd place in the Youth Fair Championship. Next year’s team looks very promising with the main core of 7th graders returning. “It’s going to be a promising year”, said Kirk Peppas, the varsity swim team Head Coach. Thanks to the parents that cooperated and helped during the season to make it memorable.

The track season couldn’t have ended any better for this group of athletes. For the second consecutive year they won the Flrunners.com State Championship, this time by .33. In the ACC schedule they went undefeated and captured the ACC Championship for a record 18th time. These Wolverines showed great tenacity and heart as no one had them penciled in for a repeat of last year’s performance at Flrunners.com. These athletes scrapped for every possible point and proved that no one should underestimate the heart of a champion and the power of a team with one goal in mind. Their excellent dedication and hard work paid off in the end as they captured another State Championship.

Columbus Tour. and ACC Champions

This year’s 6th grade basketball team did exactly what they were supposed to do, and that was achieving perfection. The team was chosen from a pool of 94 students, the largest class ever to try out for 6th grade basketball. This was a solid group from top to bottom and a pleasure to coach. Some say coaching a team of all-stars is tough, but this team from the first day of practice had something to prove and it showed in their hard work and dedication in practice. I spoke, they listened and executed, it was that simple. The Columbus ACC classic was our first test, and the team responded by beating St. Timothy, a tough St. Peter and Paul team, and in convincing fashion they defeated archrival Our Lady of Lourdes for the championship. The team ended up with eight victories in the regular season, and ended at the St. Brendan classic winning the championship of that tournament over St. Timothy. A perfect season, 15-0. I would like to thank assistant coach Alexis Zequeira and the rest of the coaching staff for their help during the season. I would also like to thank the kids for listening and allowing me to coach. Finally the parents, thank you for your support during games, and thank you for allowing me to coach your kids. It was a great year.

The 6th grade cross country season always brings in great excitement. We never know what runners may come out for the team. This group was led by Michael Magoulas, Andy Fernandez, Kevin Montiel and Julio Diaz. They were able to win the Holy Rosary Invitational and the St. Kevin Invitational. Just when we were beginning to gel, Andy Fernandez got injured. At the end of the season we were not able to field our best team and we fell short of capturing the ACC and Tri-County titles. If they keep working hard they will achieve great success in the future of the Belen cross country program.

The 6th grade soccer team was well balanced, they won eight games and lost two. The team scored 26 goals and allowed only six goals. The key goal scorers were Jorge Powell (6) and Alejandro Pita (4) They also had a stoic defense anchored by Alvaro “Tuto” Mejer. The midfield was well organized and it created many opportunities for the offense.

The 6th grade Track and Field team had one of the most successful seasons in ten years. Their combination of speed, endurance, agility and strength proved to be magnificent. They defeated opponents easily by a margin of almost 100 points. The sixth graders worked hard all season and the fruits of their preparation showed during the meets. The future looks bright for this young talented group.
