Dear Student-Athletes,

It is with great pleasure that I address you today. Belen Jesuit has many attributes that make the school successful in our community - high academic achievements, a strong Christian service program, participation in clubs and school activities, and a highly competitive sports program. One key element in our school is you, the studentathlete.

As a student-athlete you represent the best our school has to offer – the total package. You are a sportsman, who competes without compromising your academic responsibilities or forgetting those less fortunate than you. Because of this, you are to be commended. You have embodied what our founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola, envisioned - a well-rounded student who seeks God in all things and succeeds for the Greater Glory of God.

Our athletic program from the sixth grade level through the varsity level excelled this year. The sixth grade teams led the All Catholic Conference (ACC) with strong performances in each sport. The Junior High program continued its domination both against ACC and non-ACC teams. State championships were brought home in both Cross Country and Track and Field. Undefeated seasons were achieved in basketball, cross country, football, soccer and track and field. I look forward to seeing our middle school student-athletes progress through their high school years.

The High School program had the best year in school history. The varsity swimming and track and field teams won their first state titles while the cross country collected their second state title. Our crew team did extremely well in all the regattas while the baseball team advanced to the regional championship game. District championships were earned by the water polo and wrestling teams. The basketball, football, golf, and tennis teams all advanced into the state playoff system again.

I could not be prouder of our student-athletes, coaches and parents. May the Holy Spirit continue to guide us in all we do, and may we always strive to achieve the magis in both the classroom and on our courts and fields.

A MESSAGE FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

3 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!!! BASEBALL TEAM IN THE FINAL 4!!!!!

What a year!!!!! It started out with the varsity swim team winning their FIRST EVER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP, in an exciting state finals held at the Ft. Lauderdale Hall of Fame Pool. Leading their team to victory were State Champions and event winners Carlos Araque, Patrick Arenson, Sebastian Orozco, Pablo Morejon, Andrés Simauchi and Raymond Zomerfeld, the team captain. The following week the varsity cross country team came back with the school’s second ever State Championships in the sport; under the inspiration of Guillermo Echarte’ s crawl to the finish and the spirited performances by Connor McCarthy, Javier Zamparelli, Michael Cruz, and Jason Oliver their combined team effort led Belen to the second State Title in the span of one week. It didn’t stop there. Here comes the Spring Season and something miraculous happened! Belen Jesuit wins their first state championship in the sport of Track and Field behind outstanding performances from individual State Champions Andrew Jacobs who went undefeated in the 300 intermediate hurdles, the 4 X 800 relay composed of Jason Oliver, Javier Zamparelli, Daniel Silva and Robert Arán. At the time, the quartet recorded the fastest time in the entire State and the 5th. best time in the Nation. Other outstanding performances came from Guillermo Echarte, Alex Del Rio and Larry Durán.

VARSITY BASEBALL:

The varsity baseball team has won the Regional Championship and has qualified to the state final 4. The team captured first place in district and won the region quarter final and semi final games with dramatic come from behind victories. They hit dramatic winning home runs while trailing in the last inning. The first one came from catcher Byron Soler who had a 3 and 2 count with two outs and a runner on base and the second one came from outfielder Eric Cos who had a count of 0 and 1 with one out and a runner on first.

WATER POLO:

The young water polo team came away with a district championship in a very exiting overtime win against Ransom Everglades. And then lost a heartbreaker to Gulliver Prep by the same margin of one goal in a sudden death overtime period that kept them out of the State final 4. Three of the starters were picked to the Miami Herald All County first team.

CREW:

The varsity crew also came away with their best season ever, finishing second in the over all point standings at the State Championships regatta in a field of well over 20 schools. The varsity 8 finished just behind State Champions and traditional power house Winter Park. In the regatta the freshman 8 was the fastest boat in their category. At South Florida Championships hosted by Belen Jesuit, the team came away with 6 gold medals, 1 silver and 1 bronze and captured first place over all in the team championships.

WRESTLING:

The varsity wrestling team finished with a 15 and 5 record and took first place in the District Championships. Ricardo Rodríguez, Dylan Rico and Steven Rico qualified to the State Championship tournament.

VARSITY BASKETBALL GOLF AND FOOTBALL:

All three teams finished as district runner ups in their respective sports. The varsity basketball team finished with a record of 19 and 8, the golf team finished with a record of 7 and 4 and the varsity football team finished with a record of 9 and 2. All three teams reached that State Play offs. Andrew Fernández, Gus Duquesne, Frank Estévez and Greg Fontela were chosen to the Miami Herald All County First team.

VARSITY TENNIS:

The varsity tennis team finished with a record 9 and 5 and Roland Martínez was one of 5 players to be picked as first team “All County”. Roland made it all the way to the State Semifinals before loosing to the number 1 ranked player in the State.

VARSITY SOCCER ROLLER HOCKEY AND VOLLEYBALL:

The soccer team ended with a record of 8 wins 5 loses and 2 ties and lost an overtime game against Monsignor Pace in the district play-offs. The volleyball team ended with a record of 4 and 8 and the roller hockey team ended with a fine record of 12 and 3 .

Belen Jesuit athletic program continues to rank among the top 4 schools in the entire state for their over all athletic program (Male division).

Greg Fontela continues the tradition of outstanding Student athletes by making the Miami Herald top 5 list of student athlete. Belen Jesuit has accomplished this more often than any other school in the County.

JUNIOR VARSITY AND FRESHMEN SPORTS:

The junior varsity/ frehsman sports ended with a combined record of 87 wins and 20 losses. The Roller hockey team finished unbeaten and the freshman 8 crew team finished number 1 in the State.

MIDDLE SCHOOL:

Belen Jesuit continues their dominance in the middle school division. Belen has the best sports program of any school at that level as evident with them winning County and State Championships in the sports of cross country and track and field. Four teams had unbeaten seasons, basketball, soccer, cross country and track and field. Their combined record was 72 wins and only 10 losses.

NEW PROJECTS:

The Belen Jesuit Athletic Department is looking to relocate the tennis courts, build a new Olympic size 50 meter pool, football locker room, larger weight room and wrestling room. Improvements were made to the physical education and varsity locker rooms, new lockers were installed and the new basketball locker rooms were completed.

The Belen cheerleaders are a talented, hard working, and dedicated group of girls. Although their season got off to a slow start, the team was able to improve their skills through countless hours of practice. Throughout the year the team’s great improvement was noticeable, and they only kept getting better. With a solid season in 2006 the Wolverines were expected to have a great season in 2007. The squad certainly met everyone’s expectations if not more. The team currently has a record of 18-12. The Wolverines scored 241 runs while allowing 138, as well as hitting 26 homeruns as a team. Offensive leaders consisted of seniors Adrian Lorenzo, Eric Cos, and Mauricio Rodriguez, Junior Byron Soler, and Sophomore Justin Gonzalez. Great pitching came from Rodriguez, Sophomore Andres Wiltz, and Senior closer Pablo Vinent. The Wolverines captured a district championship by defeating the Key West Conchs as well as the Mater Academy Lions. With the regional tournament underway the team relied strongly on pitching from both Rodriguez and Wiltz, as well as some walk off magic by Soler and Cos that propelled the team to the championship by defeating Pines Charter and Jensen Beach. Once in the regional championship, Rodriguez would go on to pitch a complete game striking out 13, to defeat Cardinal Gibbons. This victory will go on to take the Wolverines to Sarasota Florida where they will compete against the other top three teams in the state for the right to win a state title. This is Belen Jesuits second trip to states in school history, and the first trip since 2003.

The varsity basketball team continued in its recent success earning a 19 – 8 overall record including a 6 – 2 district record. The Wolverines defeated the Columbus Explorers for the third time in five years in an exciting overtime victory. “Don’t turn your back on the wolf pack!’ chanted the blue and gold at Pharmed Arena. Other notable wins were against Gulliver Prep, Sunset High School, and Archbishop McCarthy. The team defeated Bishop Kenny and St. Pius X at the Christmas Classic in Atlanta Georgia taking home the runner-up trophy. They were also the district runner-up for the second year in a row before losing to Cardinal Gibbons in the Regional quarter-final game. Head Coach José E. Roca has now won more basketball games that any other coach in Belen History with 191 wins.

The Wolverines were led by senior Steve Agras with 15 points and 9 rebounds per game, Michael García with 11 points and 8 rebounds per game and Antonio Quezada with 11 points and 6 assists per game. Agustin Guardiola, Alex Del Rio, Diego Fernández-Soto, Jonathan Fernández, Oscar Londoño and Andre García contributed to the team’s success on a daily basis.

In my four years in the Belen Crew and in its seventh year of existence I am sure that the program has established itself as a force to be reckon with in Florida. In our Fall Season we participated in the Head of the St. Johns where we won 3 races the Varsity 4, Lightweight 4 and Novice 8. We also participated in the Head of the Indian Creek where we also took Gold, Silver and Bronze.

During the long and busy Spring season the kids began practices at 5:00 AM. All that hard work paid off when the team exceeded in its achievement from any previous seasons. This year we also had our biggest team ever. It is important to point out that the Novice 4+, Freshmen 8+, Freshmen 4+, Varsity 4+ and Junior Varsity 4+ and of course Varsity 8+ won on average 7 to * medals per meet, taking first place in most of them. The Wolverines took first in Novice Regatta, O.A.R.S. Regatta, Hood Cup and the Southern Scholastic Independent Rowing Championship. At Southern Regatta Belen for the first time in its history captured the overall first place by winning 6 Gold Medals, 1 Silver and 1 bronze medal. The Varsity 8+ had an unbelievable season, they won the Miami International Regatta and the South Florida Championship where we defeated rival Pine Crest for the first time in that competition.

At the Florida Scholastic State Championship the Wolverines excelled beyond the competitors expectations. They captured 2nd Place in the Varsity 8+ after reaching the finals for the first time, 3rd Place in the Junior Varsity 8+ and 1st Place in the Freshmen 8+. All these places added up to State Runner-up finish to Winter Park, the best Belen Crew finish ever.

Belen’s special tradition was present and prominent in the 2006 team. The meaningful history of the 36 year old program burned inside each runner. But this fire was ignited to the highest levels after one of the worst losses in cross country history at the Flrunners. com Inv. during the 2005 season; the team finished 22nd out of 30 teams. It was that night during the drive home that team leaders and coaches called for a drastic wake-up, so a meeting was held on the side of Tamiami Trail next to the sawgrass fields of the Everglades. It was on that evening that the men of Belen decided they had what it takes to continue the winning tradition. The team worked two-a-days during the scorching heat of the summer, traveling to train on the hills of Boulder, Colorado where they had a private inspirational meeting with Olympic Gold Medalist Frank Shorter at his home who spoke to them about adversity and hard training. All the while throughout their training and competitions reminding themselves of the words they spoke on that October night in 2005. The words were put into action then turned to flames and Belen’s tradition was taken to the heights of a 2006 State Title. Lead by Guillermo Echarte’s dramatic crawl to the finish line, the 5 scoring teammates (Conor McArthy, Javier Zamparelli, Michael Cruz, Jason Oliver) left its own deep and bright gold mark in Belen’s history. The 2006 team can now be remembered as one the most improved teams ever, as well as the team that covered the most mileage, as their off season and in season’s mileage total was upwards of 900 miles. The Belen Jesuit Football team finished with another great season going 9-2 and making the playoffs. Most of the wins did not come easy. This year’s team suffered many injuries to key players. RB John Smit and Gio Christidoulou suffered collarbone injuries sidelining them for the majority of the season. All-Dade DE Frank Estévez missed the first five games of the season with a fractured foot before returning to the team. The team pulled through and did whatever it took to win. The strength of the offense was the offensive line, seniors Gus Duquesne, Guillermo Álvarez, and Joey Capote paved the way for FB Andrew Fernández to rush for 1054 yards and 13 touchdowns. The defense was led by LB Greg Fontela (102 tackles, 2 sacks) and DE Frank Estévez (55 tackles, 5 sacks). They held 6 teams to fewer than 14 points. Junior LB Diego Fernández-Soto contributed with 70 tackles and senior CB Jordi Macias had 3 interceptions. With all the obstacles to overcome it was an exciting season. Two games were decided in overtime, Belen won the St. Ignatius Bucket in the Jesuit Bowl between Tampa Jesuit, and last but not least the exciting come from behind win against ABC under the lights to win the Homecoming Game. The season came to an end to the eventual State Champion Glades Central in the first round off the playoffs.

As a whole the team this year should be proud of something that holds a lot of value, that is, resiliency and perseverance. Although they suffered the loss of one of the top players from last year they put that in the past and attacked this season with a great mindset. Keeping in mind that we only started 1 senior this season we feel that the years to come have a very positive outlook and are greatly looking forward to next season. We believe that the experience that we gained for this year is really going to come in handy in the next few season. First off we would like to recognize Richy Massa for his consistent play throughout the season. Richy placed in the top ten in all of the tournament posting all of his rounds in the mid to low 70’s. He also had a scoring average of 37.2 for the nine hole matches.

Next we would like to recognize Ricky Escobar for his consistency throughout the season. Ricky had a nine hole scoring average of 37.8 and an 18 hole scoring average on 78.2 for the season.

We would also like to recognize Alfredo Rodríguez for have a great round of 73 which placed him in a tie for 2nd and most importantly placed the team in a tie for second at the youth fair tournament.

Lastly, we would like to recognize Roberto Machado and Phillip Paek although underclassmen they really stepped up to the plate and posted great rounds. They showed a lot of promise for the years to come.

The JV team had a successful season winning most of its matches and losing only to rival Gulliver.

The team was led by the consistent play of Carlos Padrón and Guillermo Quirch. AJ Luaces improved tremendously throughout the year and will soon challenge for a Varsity spot. Oscar Cabanas, a 6th grader, rounded out the top 4 and has a bright future in Belen Golf along with 7th grader Gianni Mantovanni.

The 2006-2007 season was one of the best on record for the varsity team. On the road to the Championship game, they defeated Palmetto, Killian, and Coral Reef. Even though they did not prevail in the final match, it was a very successful season. Starting next season, they will compete in the Florida Inter-scholastic Hockey League.

The leadership of Ray Mouriz, along with Seniors Andrés Castillo and Felipe Baez, made it a very exciting year and something the returning players can build upon.

Not enough can be said about the character and dedication of the JV hockey team. They were the smallest team in the league, but the ones with the biggest hearts. They had an undefeated season (9-0) and won the High School Junior Varsity Championship by defeating rival Columbus. In a sport where hard hitting and size are the dominant factors for winning, these young men showed it could be done with hard work and perseverance. The leadership of team captain Patrick Ingelmo was invaluable, considering that among the starters were two sixth graders, Michael Aguad and Matthew Díaz, as well as one eighth grader, Nicolas Navarrete. Phillip Ingelmo, lead the team in most offensive categories. Pablo Plasencia was stellar defensively and Ben Hubert played with a brace on his knee. Hard work, dedication and a commitment to excellence was the reason why this team was the best in their division.

During the season the team played its district games as well as regular season games with much seriusness. The experience that the Seniors possesed as well as the grand help of the Juniors were the main factors that gave th team excellent results this season. These factors led the team to have competitive games with well established programs like American Heritage, Columbus and St. Thomas Aquinas.

In the Semi-final game of the District the team played magnificently being down two players since the early minutes of the game . The remaining nine players gave everything they had throughout the whole game. They ahd secured a one goal lead until the last few minutes of the game when the opponents scored sending the game into overtime, where the Wolverines finally succumbed.

The team demonstrated extreme maturity and discipline specially in the games verus American Heritage, losing only 2-0; against Columbus in a very close game that ended in a 3-2 loss. Belen also had a historic first win versus 5A State Champion St. Thomas Aquinas by a 1-0 score. With a goal scored by Llobal Alonso and great goalkeeping skills by Agustin De Goytisolo the Wolverines secured the win.

Outstanding performance were made by goalkeeper Agustin De Goytisolo. Diego Abaroa, José Cobian and John Slater. The team tallied 30 goals in favor and 20 against.

The first State Swimming Championship for Dade County since 1972. An Outstanding accomplishment for Our School, Our Community and Our Families. This year is historic for all of the Alumni that came before us and created the foundation of work ethic for the Belen Swimming Team. We salute them for their continued support and thank them for all their congratulations and good wishes for this year’s team. The 2006 team is special. There are many stories to be told and remembered. But the one decision that set the stage was the team decision to forgo some individual events and concentrate on relays to win this Championship. It was a sacrifice made by a few for the Goal of the Team. The sacrifice helped the team to “Win”. All three Relays at State meet helped to double our points on the way to the Championship. Most of our Awards are listed in the program. The only Award that is not listed is the intrinsic one achieved by all of us. It will forever remind us that we are a team and we rely on each other and stand by each other in all aspects of competition and life. The athletes of Belen swimming team have completed their journey and arrived at their Goal for the 2006 season. Many years were spent training to reach this level of competition and finally the persistence paid off. Along the way we have set new team records and raised the bar to challenge future generations, For the fourth year in a row we won District, Counties and remained undefeated. Everyone contributed on the journey. Swimmers, parents and coaches along with the support of Belen School administration and the entire school coaching Staff. As the Senior High coach at Belen for the last 20 years, I have never felt as much support & strength from an institution, and I thank you. We want to thank and acknowledge our Graduating Seniors; Raymond Zomerfeld (Captain), Orlando Alvarez-Burgos, Rey Mastrapa, The Seniors provided excellent leadership this year. It turned out to be good fortune that the 2007 Tennis Team had the unusually high number of 18 players since several of the members were out for part of the season due to illness. The depth of the team got us through some tough matches in an increasingly competitive district. The season ended with a record of 9-5. The highlight of the season came from junior Roland Martínez who missed much of the season due to an injury but peaked at the District 16AA tournament. Unseeded Roland upset the #1 Seed (Gulliver) in the Semifinals and the #2 Seed (LaSalle) in the Finals. At the Individuals State Tournament in Tampa Roland defeated the top player from Lely High in the Opening Round and Crystal River High in the Quarterfinals. Roland Martínez is recognized by the Miami Herald on the All Miami-Dade County First Team! The 2007 Varsity Tennis uniforms were donated by a Friend of Belen who requested to remain anonymous. The team is most grateful for this generous contribution to the Tennis program. The Tennis Team since 1975 has a record of 316-126.

The team began training with Alpha Omega in September, where certain goals for the year were set. This year’s team finished once again with another undefeated season (23-0), and a new undefeated post season (3-0) where Belen captured the 2A State Crown for the first time in school history. They had a strong foundation. The team found its leadership, it’s heart and soul, in team captain Andrew Jacobs. He was the District, Regional and State Champion in the 300 M hurdles event, and placed 2nd in the 110H at State, also was the lead off man in the schools 4x400 relay Record team, along with Robert Arán, Javier Zamparelli, and team captain Jason Oliver. Seven other athletes moved on to the State Finals, including #5 ranking nationally 4x800 relay known as the “four horsemen” composed of Daniel Silva, Robert Arán, Javier Zamparelli and Jason Oliver. “Belen Jesuit’s 3,200-meter relay team’s didn’t give itself this nickname for bringing doom or destruction. It’s because in less than a year become the best in the state and one of the best in the nation. We call ourselves that because we feel like we’re one team together, we train hard and never stop thinking there’s room for improvement.’’ Herald quoted Daniel Silva. Team captain Guillermo Echarte was the 1600 M District and Regional Champion. This time there were no collapses as his efforts in the 3200 run clinched the team championship. Alex Del Rio was the District and Regional Champion and State 7th place and schools record holder in the Triple Jump with a new jump of 44-8 ¼; and Larry Durán finished 4th in District and Regional and at the State did his best for the last 3200 run of the season with BIG Pr of 10:02.

Varsity Team Record: 4-8

The year began with a new head coach, a first year assistant, and 2 players with the athletic ability to be starters but that had never played volleyball before in their lives. By the end of the season, the team had a new head coach and the two players, Jorge Portuondo and Brandon Fernández, had developed into dominant starters. Both of these players from the beginning always came to practice ready to learn and always gave their best effort. Jorge Portuondo led the team with 60 kills this season. The team under the leadership of 3 year starters, James Darmody and Christopher Cruz, went on to a 4-8 record with a pair of decisive victories over Coral Gables. Christopher Cruz, Junior starting setter, came into full form midway through the season where he averaged over 27 assists a game with season high of 51 assists in a game against Coral Gables. The team will be back in almost full force next year because there were only 2 seniors on the team, James Darmody and Peter CruzGordillo. Darmody will hopefully be a walk-on to the Stanford Men’s Volleyball team and Cruz-Gordillo will be attending Duke University next fall. The team had 3 nominees for All-Dade including Christopher Cruz, James Darmody, and Jorge Portuondo.

The Water Polo Team proved to have a very successful season with a very bright future.The team finished 19-5 overall. They traveled to Orlando Florida and competed in the Wildcat Tournament and went undefeated. They had 4-overtime games , two of them sudden death overtime. They finished the season ranked 2nd in the state in the polls and go into 2008 as the Preseason Number one ranked team to win the States. JC LópezFinished 1st in scoring in Dade County with 90 goals and Broke the Belen Scoring record. Jake Bakas led Belen with 60 assists. Juan López- Played a strong game all around. Belen had the only Freshman in Dade County to make Second All Dade team with Anthony López who had 49-goals-31-assists,28-steals. Also making the Miami Herald 3rd team was goalie David Fonseca with 145 blocks. Rounding off the all Dade Selections on Honorable Mention were Belen’s only Senior Julián Miranda and Jr. Andrés Simauchi. The Belen team also went to Missosuri and competed in the Desmet Invitational Water Polo Tournament taking 1st place and going Undefeated. Belen won the District 11 Title defeating Ransom in Sudden Death Overtime to become District Champions for the first time in school history.

Considering all the players that moved on to the Varsity Baseball team and the amount of new faces, one would be negative about the outcome of this season, but the opposite was true. The leadership of the returning players and the maturity and improvement of the younger players was the perfect recipe to go 15-5 and have a winning season that no one could expect. The Wolverines faced a very demanding schedule, but still managed to put together one outstanding effort after another and finished the year with a record of ( 19-2 ).

The team outscored their opponents by an average of 26 points per game, and most of the time the outcome was already decided by halftime.

Season highlights included big wins over rivals Monsignor Pace and Gulliver Prep. There was also a thrilling contest late in the year against Bishop Verot of Ft. Myers. After several tense moments and some clutch free throw shooting, the Wolverines prevailed 58-54 to hand Bishop Verot their only loss of the season.

Nick Santurio, the starting point guard, led the team in assists and steals and fellow freshman, Pablo Álvarez, was the scoring and rebounding leader. Also making major contributions on both ends of the court were super sophomores Jorge Menocal and Alfonso Águila. The excellent play of freshman guards, Reggie Colas and Sergio Fernández-Soto, along with sensational sixth-man Alfredo Latour, was also vital to the team’s success.

After all was said and done, a total of just six points separated this team from an undefeated season.

As usual the Junior Varsity Crew squad continues its great winning tradition. These group of athletes gives us a glimpse as to what the future looks like for the Belen Jesuit Crew Team. The Junior Varsity, Freshmen and Novice squads were always capturing 1st, 2nd or 3rd place in the different regattas that they attended all year. The highlight of the season was the Wolverines capturing the State Championship in the Freshmen 8+ by beating the undefeated squad of Winter Park. The JV football team had a season to remember for the coming years. The returning sophomores were the leaders of this year’s team and kept the team together through injuries and defeats as well as victories. The incoming freshman and new sophomores were also a big help to the teams overall success. The offense was led by returning offensive linemen Erick Bustos and Javier Chang who combined did very well this season and had 10 pancakes each. The leading rushers of the team were Victor Padilla and Sergio Fernández-Soto which combined had over 1500 yards and 15 touchdowns. Fernández-Soto also set a JV record by rushing for 308 yards in the Reagan game. Javier Ayo started the season off very promising and scored a TD but then became injured, it was a grave loss for the team. Caleb Rock and Darius Ricks also contributed to the team by scoring two touchdowns each. TE Alfonso Águila led the team in receptions with 26 and 6 TDs. Reginald Colas and Pablo Álvarez had 2 touchdowns each and were the leading receivers. The defense was led by Alec Puig, Dylan Rico and Daniel Echeverria also helped by adding 8 sacks. Overall this year was very succesful.

The Belen JV soccer team had a very successful season. At the end of the season we accumulated eleven wins, one tie and one loss. The tie was to Columbus, a hard fought game that ended 2-2. The unfortunate loss came to St. Thomas Aquinas, they scored the go ahead goal with 5 minutes remaining. If we had been able to hold up for those 5 minutes, we would have ended with an undefeated season. The top scorer of the team was Frankie Chamorro with eleven goals, followed by Gaby with seven and Morfín with six. The most valuable player was Andrés Morfín, he had a great season scoring very important goals for the team and leading at all times. The most improved player was Jorge Guarch. Since the start of the season he just kept raising his level each game. The highlight of the season was beating American Heritage at home. With that win we ended their undefeated season which was a great accomplishment considering that they are one of the powerhouses of soccer in Florida.

In completing a successfull 10-3 season, the freshman squad relied upon its versatility and offensive skills. As many as eleven players wound up scoring in games using a system that maximized the team’s depth. Seven different players led the Wolverines in scoring throughout the campaign, and twice the team surpassed 80 points. Led by the backcourt tandem of Alec Admire and Andrew de Armas, as well as frontcourt players

Andrew Alvarado, Javier Del Riego, and Juan Chediak, the team played an uptempo style that placed pressure on the opponent at both ends of the court. The season was highlighted with wins over traditional rivals like Pace and Gulliver as well as a tough defeat to Columbus in the championship game at the North Broward Prep Tournament. With continued development and dedication, these Wolverines will be entertaining crowds for years to come.

The Junior High Gold team finished on top of the ACC again this year with an 8-1 record in the conference and a 13-2-1 overall record. The Wolverines outscored their opponents 158-62 on the season. Leading the offensive attack was a core group of 8th graders. Sheehan Planas-Arteaga led the team with a .520 batting average and Miguel Ramallo batted .488 with an amazing 12:1 walks to strikeouts ratio. Gio Ayala was our productive lead off batter and Javi Ortíz was our clean up hitter. Rene Tato and Max Salvador were both very valuable assets to the team by leading in home-runs, RBI’s, Slugging percentage, and wins.

The 2007 Junior High Blue team faced a challenging and tough schedule this year as the squad was only composed of seventh graders, but this did not seem to bother anyone. This was a wonderful season that was not led by just one player because of the teamwork and leadership that there was throughout the year. Players like Joey Rodríguez, Christian Perea and David Díaz-Fernández led the team offensively as Alex Lavandero, Ryan Guerra and Gabriel Sánchez dominated other teams on the mound. This seems to be a promising group for the future as they will have no problem playing at the next level.

Extraordinary commitment, effort, talent and an intense desire and focus on the team concept were the forces that drove the 2006-2007 Junior High Gold Basketball team to a perfect 28-0 season. With three returners in the line-up and a wealth of talent supporting the team off the bench, the Gold squad was able to play tenacious defense that caused 465 steals (16.6 per game) and held opponents to just 23.7 points a game. On offense, the team orchestrated a fastbreak and offense that seemed to score at will averaging 57.1 points per game.

Leading the team were the 8th grade returners – Mauri Boschetti (10.3 ppg and 71% FG percentage), Ryan García (12.5 ppg and 78 steals) and Manny Sicre (7.86 pts., 5.2 assists and 4 steals per game). Their leadership proved to be the deciding factor in earning the All Catholic Conference Championship (10-0), defeating North Broward Prep in the finals of their own tournament (68-55) and in a hard-fought, two-point victory over Gulliver Prep (65-63) in the finals of the Palmer-Trinity Tournament.

While these three young men proved to be the leaders on the team, their teammates were definitely not far behind as the phrase “15 strong could have been used to describe the group’s effort. Strong performances were consistently turned in by 8th graders Nick Menocal, Nick White and Frank Fernández in the paint, James Lima, Edmond Benedetti, Jorge Ferrer, Curt Chavoustie running other teams down with their efforts at guard, and Nick Botero and Gonzalo Mengotti at forward. The sole three 7th graders who all made an impact were Kevin Portillo, Danny Admire, and Aury Leyva.

The Junior High Blue Basketball Team finished the season with a 13-3 record, the team began the season with a seven game winning streak that included an overtime win over Epiphany. This years team averaged 44 pts while allowing only 25 pts per game using full court pressure defense.

The team was led by scorers and Co-MVP’s Bryan Pérez and Daniel Rincon, assists leader Guillermo Quirch, rebound leaders: Andrew Fisher, Antonio Ucar, Jordan Fernández and Javier Rodríguez added size and athleticism to the team. Alec Macias, Franky Castro, Nick Moreiras led the team in steals while Kevin Pérez, Julián Legido, and Alex Degoti, Peter Ariz, Jerry Portela, and Christian Marrero contributed to great guard play and handled the ball effectively.

This years team played with a lot of heart and a refuse to lose attitude that resulted impressive wins over: St. Timothy, St. Brendan, St. Agatha, Epiphany. The team’s most impressive win was when they avenged a mid season loss to Lourdes Elementary with a 45-25 win at home.

When the JH team stepped up to the starting line, they knew they were the best trained running machines out there. It is no surprise that this team was able to complete an undefeated season. In the process they achieved some very successful feats. They won the Flrunners.com State Championship by scoring a perfect 15, the lowest score ever by any school at the meet. They won the Dade County Championship for the 3rd year in a row, something never done by any other team in the school history. This was also the schools 13th overall County title. They won the ACC Championship for the 16th time. They won the Tri-County Championship for the 7th year in a row and they won the Catholic Schools State Championship for the 2nd year in a row. With runners such as Gabriel Loret de Mola, Julián Rey, Branden Martínez, Elliot Clemente, Joshua López, Nick Ruíz, Livio Fernández, Raul Cubiña, Carlos García, Manny García, Rafael Túa and Daniel Ruíz these Wolverine harriers made a strong argument to being the best ever JH cross country team in school history. But only their future accomplishments will tell if they truly are deserving of such an honor.

The student-athletes of the 2006-2007 Belen Jesuit Junior High Football Team have accomplished what many in their position have attempted, but none had ever attained: a perfect season. While their individual accolades will be soon enough forgotten, what they have achieved as a team shall forever become part of the Belen legacy. Their unwavering determination and dedication to the task at hand produced an offense that averaged 24 points per game and a defense that held opponents scoreless for 20 consecutive quarters of play. The coaches hope that these young men have come away from this season with more than a perfect record, but with a new respect for the notions of working hard, working smart, never giving up, and always staying focused on their goal. This season was a season of regrouping and dedication. With the loss of Carlos Omaña to the Varsity team, the JH swim team had to train harder than last year. Everyone put a lot of effort into practice and it showed toward the end of the season. The JH swim team was made up of some new faces and a lot of old ones. The adaptation the new kids had to make was a positive transition and is something expected from all athletes. They trained everyday for 3 months, hard and restless. At the beginning you could tell they were out of shape, but toward the end of the season they were leaving practice wanting more. The season consisted of four dual meets and 2 championship meets. Belen placed 2nd in the Miami Independent Championship meet and 3rd in the Middle School Youth Fair Championships. In all, the season was a good one and we look forward to improving for next season.

More than 40 middle school players competed for the chance to make the 2007 Junior High Tennis Team. Five of them (Juan Lorido, Bryan Perez, Nick Garcia, John Pessoa, and Richard García) had already demonstrated their skills on the courts by making the Varsity Team. The search for the remaining players (Jose Lorido, Daniel Rincón, Rene Brillembourg, Aky Fernández, Diego Rosette, and Erik Garrigo) led us to a fine season. We scored two decisive wins against Palmer-Trinity and one against Epiphany. The losses to Gulliver and Ransom-Everglades showed us how competitive the competition can be. Whether we won or lost, we relied on the wisdom of Rudyard Kipling’s poem “If”: “If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster; And Treat those two imposters just the same.”

The boys making up the Middle School water polo team went from “Greenback” to aggressively competitive in one short season. And had FUN getting there. Motivated by the spectacular success of their Varsity team rolemodels, these younger guys are destined to become future champs too. They finished the season 4-3 having strong finishes against Ransom’s young, novice team and played valiantly against Gulliver’s stronger and older team. Next year, Gulliver watch out!

Seventh Graders Alex Carr, Mathew Bill and Albert Pérez, 6th graders Herzen Cortes, Devon Roura and Alfredo Ramirez worked hard to learn this sport and competed impressively. They were supported by the experience and strength of 9th graders Mario Carcamo, David Angarita and DannyZolaun. Herzen must be congratulated on being selected as the reserve player for the Varsity team. With many of these boys practicing with the White Caps team through the summer months they’ll be ready for champ status next year.

The 6th grade baseball team enjoyed a 6-3-1 record in the ACC this year. Good enough to make them one of the top teams in the conference. The Wolverines finished with a four game winning streak and a 4-1-1 record at home. In every tight ball game it was good pitching and outstanding defense that won the game for them. Eric Couto, Kenji Martínez, Robert Morgado, Daniel Pino and Francisco Smith all stepped up in big ways on the mound for the Wolverines this season. It was the top of the order with Kenji Martínez, Giancarlo Cueto, Eric Couto, and Alex González that propelled the offense every game. Willy Pujals, Alex Álvarez and Lucas Fernández-Rocha were the big hitters leading the team in extra-base hits and RBI’s.

This year’s sixth grade basketball team had a record of 12 wins and one loss. They were also ACC champs of their division. It was an exciting year with tough wins over St. Theresa, St. Rose de Lima, and arch rival Epiphany. This was one of the more hard working teams I have had the privilege to work with, from the moment they stepped on that court as a team for the first time. This hard work mentality was evident every time they took on an opponent, never giving up from first quarter to fourth quarter. As a coach, you can’t ask for anything more.

I would like to thank coaches José Roca, and Ruben Marrero, for their support during the season. I would like to especially thank the players for their hard work and dedication every time we practiced and played.
