Senior Advisor, Hispanic Broadcasting and Marketing
The Miami HEAT
José Pañeda, the Spanish Voice of the Miami HEAT (La Voz), has been the Spanish radio play-by-play announcer for the past thirteen years, broadcasting all Miami HEAT games. An original HEAT member, he begins his fifteenth year with the team.
Three seasons ago, Pañeda once again made HEAT history as he was the play by play broadcaster on the first ever Miami HEAT game on Spanish language television. Last season, Pañeda became the first HEAT broadcaster ever to reach and announce 1,000 consecutive regular season games. In fact, he is the first Spanish radio broadcaster in the history of the NBA to reach that milestone.
In eight of the past nine seasons, Pañeda has been the voice at the NBA Finals, which were broadcast the last several years across the United States and internationally through the NBA on ESPN Spanish Radio Network and Radio Unica. Pañeda is also a veteran of eleven Spanish broadcasts of the NBA All-Star game.
In 1998, Pañeda was named by Sports Illustrated as one of the five fastest speaking announcers in the NBA.
For two consecutive summers, Pañeda was the host and play-by-play announcer for WNBA games broadcast on Gems Television to twenty-one countries in Latin America. And in the summer of 1999, Pañeda was the play-by-play voice of basketball on Univision's network coverage of the Pan American Games.
Pañeda has also broadcast NBA games to TV viewers in most of Latin America through TNT Latino and provided play-by-play commentary for Prime Deportiva (now Fox Sports America).
Other credits to Pañeda's broadcast work include the 1994 Orange Bowl Game. In 1992 Pañeda was the television color commentator at the Olympic qualifying Tournament of the Americas on Univision. He has also worked on English Radio for WQAM in Miami.
As Senior Advisor, Hispanic Broadcasting & Marketing, Pañeda is responsible for serving as the HEAT'S spokesperson in the Hispanic Community and advising the HEAT Group with their efforts. This includes creating and implementing different plans to assist the Marketing, Public Relations, and Community Relations departments. This is in addition to overseeing the Spanish Radio and television broadcasts. In 2001 Mr. Modesto Maidique, President of FIU, wrote a beautiful letter congratulating him for all his achievements.
A 1982 graduate of Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in Miami and a 1986 graduate of Florida International University (BBA), Pañeda and his wife, Ana (a CPA), are the parents of twin boys, Jose Carlos and Alexander Eduardo (1995). The Pañeda family resides in Miami.

A RECAP OF THE 2001-2002 ATHLETIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
Belen Jesuit went through another outstanding year in the over-all sports program. Five of our varsity teams finished among the top 10 schools in the State, our school is currently ranked 4th among all 2-A boys programs in the State.
NEW PROJECTS:
We are embarking in one of the largest athletic programs in the history of the school. Five brand new tennis courts have been added, 2 new outdoor basketball and volleyball courts have also been completed. A new shelter is going to be built in the center of the tennis complex with water and electricity, a brand new state of the art football, soccer and track complex with seating for over 1,300 spectators, 200 new parking spaces, two baseball fields, batting cages, bathrooms and concession stand. All will be going up during the summer. We are in NEED OF SUPPORT FROM THE BELEN FAMILY IN ORDER TO GET THESE PROJECTS COMPLETED.
VARSITY FOOTBALL:
Our Head Coach Richard Stuart recorded his 100th career win while at Belen. The team recorded another winning season and was ranked among the State top 10 teams. They also went further than ever into the State Play-Offs.
VARSITY SOCCER:
The Varsity Soccer under first year Coach Fabio Ortega, went through a Cinderella season. They recorded the first undefeated season in Belen history, won their District Championship and advanced to the State Region Finals. Their upset victory over Gulliver in the Region Semi-Finals with a record crowd at hand was just amazing. The senior leadership of Michael Montiel, Andres Chiriboga, Victor Leon, Emilio Saiz, Luis Angulo and Camilo Ferro was just outstanding.
VARSITY WRESTLING:
The Varsity Wrestling team made school history by crowning two Individual State Champions. Jason Machado went through an undefeated season and won many major tournaments, including the prestigious Sunshine Open that features wrestlers from all over the Nation. David Bouza came back to win a State Championship in the 152 weight class which may have been the most competitive and the toughest weight classification. They led the team to a 6th. place finish at State.
VARSITY TRACK AND FIELD:
The Varsity Track and Field team won their 11th District Championship in the past 12 years,They also went on to record the highest finish ever at the State Meet. Over-all 3-new school records were set and 4 others came within 100's of seconds of being broken. Leading the Wolverines was sophomore Javier Garcia-Tunon who earned nearly 400 team points and set a new school record in the 300 meter hurdles. Jose Garcia who set a new school record in the 800 and almost another one in the 1,600 M. The sprint relay, 4 X 100 of Miguel Ferrer, Felipe Ojeda, Luis Pereda and Javier Garcia-Tunon went to the State Finals for the first time in the school history, won their preliminary heat and went on the 3rd place over all finish. Javier Cruz was 4th in the 3,200 M.
VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY:
Had their best team performance of the year when they took first place at the prestigious Walt Disney World Cross Country Classic. They also completed another unbeaten season in dual meets. And raced to a 6th place in the State Championship Meet. Javier Cruz and Jose Garcia two of 6 runners from all of the Dade to make the All-County team.
VARSITY GOLF:
Sophomore Juan Weissenberg had a fantastic year making second Team All-County and leading his team to a District runner up, their best finish ever. The team finished with a record of 12 and 3.
VARSITY TENNIS:
Coach Pat Collins and his players led the team to another winning season and a District runner up. Enrique Escobar took up the number one singles when the team's projected number one player Steve Pessoa was sidelined for the season with an injury
VARSITY BASKETBALL:
The Varsity Basketball went through a tough season but showed that Belen is always to be respected by its opponents. They played courageously and stayed up with every opponent. Christian Hermida and Alex Guradiola had excellent seasons.
VARSITY BASEBALL:
The Varsity Baseball team went through an up and down season, but still proved to be an admirable opponent. They managed to upset Monsignor Pace and Key West who were nationally ranked teams and held their own in what has to be one of the toughest divisions in the State. Junior Luis Rojas is slowly becoming one the elite players in the area.
JR. HIGH SPORTS:
The Jr. High program continues to be the backbone of the success of our varsity sports, they continue to dominate league play, the Jr. High Track and Field team, the Swim team and the 6th and 7th grade Cross Country team all captured first place honors in the Dade County Youth Fair Championship competitions. The Jr. High Cross Country team, 6th grade Baseball, 6th grade Track and Field and Cross Country all won ACC Championships. In the 7th and 8th grade divisions: The Basketball, Track, Cross Country, and Flag Football teams, also won ACC Championships.

The 2001-2002 Junior Varsity Cheerleaders began the season with a week at UCA hosted cheer camp at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. At camp, the squad received 3rd place in the camp cheer division and had two of its members, Giselle Jimenez and Ilyssa Plantada, recognized as UCA All-Stars. The rest of the year went well as the girls led their JV Football and Basketball teams during games and pep-rallys.
The 2001-2002 Varsity Cheerleaders, likewise, began the season at the cheer camp in the University of Central Florida, which was hosted by UCA cheerleaders. Varsity received 2nd place in the extreme routine, the dance portion of the camp competition and also congratulated three of its members who were recognized as UCA All-Stars, Nastassia Agon, Jennifer Basten, and Kina Mills.
Varsity Baseball
It was a very exciting season for the team. We had 7 starters return from the 2001 season bringing experience, leadership and commitment. The team earned victories over top ranked schools such as: Taravella, Msgr. Pace, Key West, Palmetto, Fla. Christian and a season sweep over St. Brendan. During the spring break the team headed west to play in the Toyo National Classic (formerly Upperdeck classic) in Anaheim CA. The team battled against 4 of the top teams in the nation and visited Edison Field, Dodger Stadium, and all other great sites in Southern California. It was an all around team effort. Senior Tony Llera hit .307 with 13 RBI, AJ Correa was 3-0 with wins over Pace and Key West and Andre Enriquez signed a baseball scholarship with Div. I La Moine in Syracuse NY. Juniors Louis Rojas earned First team all county honors hitting ,424 with 5 HR, Ralph De Armas hit .301 earning him first team all tournament in California. Jonathan Mederos belted 5 HR with a game winning homerun against Fla. Christian, catcher Danny Marquez was solid defensively and added 9 doubles. Chris Marrero had a game saving catch against Pace and a key homerun against Gulliver in the playoffs. In spite of playing all their games away, because of the construction of the new sports facilities, the team had a great year and we are looking forward to a better season next year 6

The 2001-2002 season of Varsity Basketball was one of excitement and tough competition. The team had to adjust to a group of players who had never played together before. Regardless of these difficulties, the team won third place at the Florida State Catholic Tournament in St. Augustine, Florida by defeating Melbourne Central Catholic and host St. Joseph’s Academy This was a very enjoyable and exciting trip, and we faced stiff competition from other Catholic schools. Leading the team in scoring this year was Christian Hermida and Alejandro Guardiola. Hermida also led the team in assists. Dominating the boards, leading the team in rebounding, was Daniel Valdes. Outstanding contributions were provided all season by Jose GarciaTuñon, Stephen Putman, Christopher Gueits, Anthony Torrente, and Jean Paul Bermudez. In a tough district where Key West went to the State Finals and Gulliver was runner up in the district, accomplishing a 13- 14 record was not an easy task. Most importantly, the team learned about cohesion, friendship, discipline, and hard work.

The Belen Crew of 2002 had a tough act to follow after the inaugural season of 2001. The crew did not disappoint the fans. In the very first regatta of the year, Belen rowers competed in 8 different categories at the Devil’s 1/2 Mile Sprint regatta. In an impressive show of power the Crew swept the entire regatta winning an unprecedented 8 Gold medals in 8 races. Never in the history of this regatta had one crew won all the events. Throughout the season a Varsity 4 crew consisting of team Captain Ignacio Garcia, Alfie Vargas, Felipe de Leon and Jorge de Leon led the team. A very strong JV, Novice and Freshman crews will be participating in the state Championship regatta in Tampa. The Belen rowers would like to thank to thank their coaches, Luis “Guajiro” Gutierrez, Jose Mendoza, and Dr. Rene Revuelta for their dedication and support. Also thanks to the Parent’s Club for making this season possible.

The Varsity Cross Country team completed another unbeaten season in dual meets, won 3-major invitationals and finished as team runner’s up in 5 others. The biggest and the most pleasant surprise of the year was the emergence of sophomore Javier Cruz as one of the elite runners in the State and the team’s number one. Jose Garcia (Jr.) also had an outstanding season along with freshman Eduardo Arguello, both were among the State’s best. The large gap between the #3 to #5 runners proved to be costly in the big meets as the team could only manage a 6th place finish at State. The return of its top 6 runners from this year’s team, strong leadership from next year’s seniors Jose Garcia and Miguel Ferrer and the maturing of the young and talented crop of freshman, places the team in a very good position to contend for next year’s State Championship.

The 2001 Varsity Football team had a tall order in front of them. They had to replace 18 seniors from the previous year and had the task of trying to duplicate the 2000 team’s accomplishment of being the most succesful in school history.
The young (only 8 Seniors on the squad) team worked hard and got better every week. As a result the team notched 9 wins and came a TD shy of winning the District 12-2A championship. They also advanced to the regional semifinal with a win over Pope John Paul II in the regional quaterfinal. Hopes are high for next year with 16 returning starters. Good luck to the small but excellent senior football players from the class of 2002.

The Varsity Golf team went through another outsatnding season. The team finished with a record of 12-2-1. Their 3rd place finish at the Dade County Youth Fair Tournament as well as their District Runner-up title are the team’s highest achievement in school history. Juan Weissenberg proved to be a solid number one man, who consistently finished among the top golfers in the County. Other team members that contributed highly to the team’s success were Nick Alexander, Jose Canto, Ricky Moreno and Daniel Bustamante.

The team’s preparation began weeks before working daily knowing that we would be playing in a whole new district. The team played every game as if it was going to be their last. The results were excellent being that they were the first team in school history to go undefeated in soccer during the season .
Discipline was a major factor since the team was playing while being on probation. Their behavior was excellent, finishing the season without one red card for expulsion.
The highlight of the season was playing Gulliver at the regional quaterfinal and beating them, in this game each athlete was assigned a specific task and they fullfilled their task . Our season came to an end at the Regional final game where the team lost their only game of the season. Thanks to God it was an excellent season for everyone. 12

Even though it was a rebuilding year for the Belen Varsity Swim team due to the loss of Juniors Javier Araque and Javier Morejon, Sophomore Jeffrey Vivo and Freshman Javier Basnuevo took the reins and led the team to a 3-3 record. The Wolverines ended in 4th Place at the All Catholic Conference high school meet, also finished 3rd at the Dade County Youth Fair Meet and got District Runnerup honors. Individual Highlights included two members being named to the prestigious 1st Team all county, Jeffrey Vivo and Javier Basnuevo. Vivo also went to the State meet and finished in 4th place in the 50 freestyle and 6th place in the 100 freestyle. Vivo and Basnuevo led the Wolverines to a respectable 14th place finish out of 43 schools in the State meet. The future surely looks bright. Good job guys keep it up!
Varsity Tennis
The 2002 season began on a disappointing note when last year’s sensation, Steve Pessoa, was unable to play this year due to a shoulder injury. Fortunately, when senior Enrique Escobar moved to the #1 position he had a spectacular year and made it possible for the team to continue its long tradition of producing winning tennis teams. Jorge Salazar made huge improvements in his game and is a powerful #2. The Gonzalez-Mora brothers, Javier and Daniel, provided a great deal of depth to the team. Newcomer Facundo Rosello had the best single’s record on the team.
The two biggest highlights of the year would be defeating LaSalle in March after losing to them in February, and finishing the season as the District Runner-Up! In addition to senior Enrique Escobar, senior Louis Velasco leaves as a great competitor All the best to them!

The team ended the season strong defending its District title and getting 4th place at the State Meet, our highest finish ever. Leading the Wolverines were State finalists Javier Garcia-Tunon, Jose Garcia, Felipe Ojeda, Miguel Ferrer, Luis Pereda and Javier Cruz. In its first debut at State the 4x100 team earned Belen’s first sprint relay medal ever. Jose Garcia made a valiant attempt at breaking the school’s 1600 M record. With Pole Vaulter Jonathan Salum being the only senior, the team is poised for another outstanding season.

The phrase “Winning isn’t everything” really hit home this season. Although our record was 4-16, we managed to gain some much needed experience. We had many close wins, losing by 2 points. I am very proud of these young men. It was not easy walking off the court empty handed. But they did it with their chin up, having given their best.
I wish the best to all the players, especially Senior Mike Ortiz and Kevin Pardinas. I am looking forward to next year when Boys Volleyball finally becomes a sanctioned sport. Districts here we come!

After losing 6 seniors last year to graduation, the 2002 year was supposed to be a rebuilding year. But the team prevailed through injuries and problems. The year was an overall success. The team produced 4 State qualifiers and for the first time in school history it produced two State Champions in the same year. David Bouza and Jason Machado won their respective weight classes. The team finished 3rd in Districts, 6th in Regionals and 6th in State.

This year’s Junior Varsity Baseball team was extremely young, it was a team that did a lot of growing while having good chemistry and a positive attitude. During the season the players grew together learning more from every game and wanting to compete. The personalities on this team were incredible and it was extremely fun to be a part of it. At all times we had every player give 100% to the team. Our opener this year was a victory over La Salle with a score of 23 to 3.
The captains of the team were Alex Parets and Robert del Riego. The key players of the team this year were: on the mound #1 Pitcher Eric Wiltz, Ed Mendiola, Alex Arias, Chris Marrero and David Romero. At the end of the season the team had 5 players with better than .300 avg. batting. Everyone made great contributions to the team and had a role to play. The coaches would like to give special thanks to the Belen parents for their support and Coach Tony Meilan and especially the players for making the season something special.

This year’s J.V. Basketball team got off to a promising start with three easy victories at the outset of the season. This was followed by a third place finish in the North Broward J.V Tournament, which included some of the toughest teams in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.
The remainder of the season was full of close, competitive games and the Wolverines more than held their own. The highlight of the season was a dramatic 62-60 win over Ransom Everglades in front of a large crowd in the Belen Gym. Javier Garcia-Tuñon received a great pass from Javier Cruz and scored the final basket with just one second left on the clock.
However, the team also had some disappointments, with five losses coming by 3 points or less. Everyone took this as a learning experience and made a commitment to work harder and improve.
Alex Telleria led the team in scoring with just over 14 points per game and was definitely the most valuable player. Several other players had outstanding performances throughout the year as well, and everyone made great progress as the season came to an end.

The 2001 season could be summed up in one word: “Unpredictable”.
After a tough beginning against Key West, the season ended with four consecutive victories. The offensive line allowed only two sacks the whole season. The line consisted of guards Louis Mendez and Carlos Nieto, Alex Nuche at center, Eloy Figueredo and Mike Ortiz at tackles, and Juan Michelen at tight end. Our quarterback Brian Dominguez led the team to a record of 4-3. Runningbacks Francisco Guevara, Alex Sosa, Jorge Rios, Jimmy Fenton, and Peter Munoz racked up yards, while fullback Gabe Alonzo-Mendoza dominated anyone who tried their luck at tackling him.
On the other side of the ball, we doused the fires of opposing offenses. Defensive end Mike Ortiz led the team in sacks with at least one sack in every game. The other end Juan Michelen engulfed anyone who tried to carry the ball anywhere near him. In the middle of the ongoing fleet of rampage, the defensive line, were Eloy Figueredo, David Monzon, Julian Dieppa, and Miguel Marmol. Our linebackers, Francisco Guevara, Alex Sosa, and Louis Mendez shut down the running game. Our secondary, led by Peter Munoz and Maickoll Papastavros and accompanied by brother Andy and Charlie Manrara, shut down the aerial attack. Without the leadership of head coach Angel Aparicio, and assistant coaches Augie Venegas, Barney Flores, and Danny Rodriguez we wouldn’t have been able to bring it all together. With so many of last year’s starting players moving up to varsity, we came together perfectly in a mix of emotions, laughter, and tears. And so, the Wolverines met their challenge and produced results.

The Jr. Varsity soccer team faced the season with 80% of its players being new, each of the players gave their best effort to assure good results for the school during the season.
The biggest games were against district rival Key West and Palmer Trinity Throughout those games the players showed great skills and a lot of sacrifice for the school’s colors. The players that stood out in the season were Facundo Rosello, Patricio Gonzalez, Peter Klock, Freddie Elorza and Daniel Palacios. Congratulations guys.
Freshman Basketball
The Freshman Basketball team had an outstanding season this year, finishing with a record of 14-4. The team played against tough competition and came away with several hard-fought victories. The team defeated St. Thomas Aquinas, Killian, Msgr. Pace, Gulliver, American Heritage and Chaminade. The team showed a lot of character in its victory over Chaminade by overcoming a 26 point halftime deficit. The strength of the year was that it had a lot of balance, seven different players led the team in scoring. The team also played great defense and played very unselfish basketball. All 14 players made the season a successful one because of their great attitude and hard work. The team had great chemistry and overcame several injuries. The team improved very much over the course of the season and has a very bright future.

This year we had a Gold team and a Blue team. We felt we had enough talent to start a second team and compete with area schools. It is important to keep on developing young talent and keep the players in a competitive environment. The Blue team was made up of 12 hardworking players that never gave up and showed improvement all the way until the last game. These gentlemen enjoyed playing basketball and I enjoyed coaching them. The season was unique and challenging as we faced a rebuilding year, not only for our athletic field, but for our team as well. The team had to practice away at other fields and their games were played away as well, including home games. They also lost a pitcher to injury and many of them played through their own injuries. Nevertherless, they were alble to place 3rd in the ACC.
The highlight of the year was at the end of the season when they faced the 2nd place team in the Conference. Their confidence was high and they were determined to win, as every player added a piece of themselves to the team to win the last game of the season. The Junior High Basketball Gold team ended their season with a record of 24 wins and 1 loss. The Wolverines were crowned, for the third year in a row, All Catholic Conference Champions. In addition, the Junior High Gold Team won first place at the North Broward Preparatory Christmas Tournament. During the season, the team averaged 49 points a game while giving up an average of 24 points per game. Anthony Fernandez, who averaged 15 points, and George Don, who averaged 10.6 points per game, led the team. Fernando Aran and Eric Montes supplied the interior offense and defense. Gio Christodoulou and Agustin Guardiola shared the point guard duties after Gabriel Bermudez was moved up to the Junior Varsity. Jonathan Hernandez was our defensive specialist, who shut down opposing scorers. Steven Agras, Juan C. Arenas, John Smit and Antonio Quezada added the necessary spark off the bench when we needed it. The Junior High program, under the direction of Jose E. Roca, has won 67 out of 69 games during the past three seasons. We would like to thank Vincent Fernandez for all his help during these past two seasons.

These guys are usually seen as the little guys of the cross-country program, but this season they showed that there is nothing little about their accomplishments. This group of running Wolverines was made up almost entirely of 7th graders. Despite this youthfulness the team finished a close second at the Miami Dade-County championships and traveled to Winter Haven, FL to capture the runner-up title at the Floridarunners.com Invitational. ‘Running shoes off’ to the 2001 entourage’s commitment to strive to be the best. This team loses only a few runners to the Varsity, in fact the leader of the team will also be returning for one more season.

The Junior High Football team had a very successful season in many areas. The team record of 5-1was certainly outstanding but even more noteworthy was the tremendous leadership of the entire 8th grade class and the responsible attitude of all the players to work hard and improve as a team. The hard work on the practice field paid big dividends during the five wins in which the offense averaged 21 points per game. Outstanding offensive performers were Fernando Aran, Carlos Roque, Daniel Garcia and Andres Navarro who were all outstanding leaders. Pidermann and Gabriel Bermudez provided a good balance to the running game. On Defense the team was led by LB Jose del Valle, DE Aran and CB Pidermann, in only allowing opponents an average of 8 points per game. Congratulations to all the team members for their great success. Keep it up!

The Junior High Soccer team had one of the most challenging seasons in quite some time. The team’s schedule included teams outside of the A.C.C. conference which added to the challenges of the new coach. But after the gas was poured in the tank and the engine was running for a while, the team midway through the season began running like a new sports car. Gaby Marrero, led the team in scoring with 13 goals. The team showed they had learned to work with each other towards the end of the season with a suspense-filled victory at the A.C.C. Central Division Title game versus St. Agnes.

A new team is born! This year’s team, as the first 6th grade soccer team in the school’s history, has most certainly set the standards high. Despite being the first year of the program this group of soccer players played as if they had been playing together for 20 years. The team’s offense was a true scoring machine and their defense nearly bullet proof. The team’s accomplishments blended well with the winning tradition of the school, they remained undefeated for the season and captured the first ever A.C.C. sixth grade soccer title.

The team was led by Fernando Aran, who was the teams leading point scorer. In fact, at the Dade County Meet, he produced nearly 1/3 of Belen’s points. Other stalwarts included Carlos Roque, Jonathan Hernandez, Gaston De Zarraga, Christian Carlesi, Gabriel Marrero, Javier Ramos and Joshua Joseph.
The team’s great success was not accomplished without some nervous moments. At the Westminster Academy Invitational, going into the 400 M, our team trailed the host school by over 30 points. The leaders of the team Fernando Aran and Carlos Roque got the team together and stressed the importance of maintaining the undefeated season. With this great inspiration Belen was able to turn the meet around and win by over 40 points, including a new school record in the 4x400 M.
It was a real pleasure to coach these young men and hopefully most of them will continue to keep the tradition alive at the Varsity level.

This team has the distinction of playing the first match on our new tennis courts. On May 6, 2002, the Junior High Tennis Team defeated Epiphany 7 - 0.
Junior High Swimming

The talented Wolverines worked hard and won the Dade County Championship. The boys did an excellent job defeating Gulliver and Ransom in dual meets. The boys added the middle school district championship to their awards with performances from different contributors. This group of kids made a major impact in the Varsity contributing greatly to their efforts. This was a great year for Belen and we would like to acknowledge our parents for their volunteer help, dedication, and contribution to our athletes. We would like to thank Coach Olga Uribe for her hard work and motivation.

The team had an excellent season, breezing through the ACC with 9 straight wins. This prepared them for their biggest challenge, a game against an AAU All-star team that had won national recognition. After a close first half, the Wolverines applied full court pressure and win 49-27. Belen finished the season with a perfect 10-0 record. The leading scorer was Tony Quezada with 10 points per game. He is a terrific player and will certainly be a factor in the future. Also having outstanding season were Diego Fernandez, Joshua Espinosa, Michael Garcia, Alex Iparraguirre, Manny Padin, JV De Ona and Michael Newmeyer. This was undoubtedly one of the best seasons.

As we commenced the 2002 Sixth Grade Baseball season the excitement was great and powerful. These young men were ready to take on the ACC Conference single-handedly with their energetic bats and strong defense. All of the players made great contribution to the score of each game which led them to a 10-1 record and the ACC central division championship. Most of all, every game that we played was just as important to these players as the first game. There is only one word that can describe the 2002 Sixth Grade Baseball team-UNITY. Congratulations on your fantastic year. We’d like to thank the parents because their support was exceptional since every game this year was an away game due to the construction of the athletic fields.

Year after year, the six graders run in the shadow of the older guys. This year it started out as such but as the season progressed they began to mold an image of their own. Six grader Guillermo Echarte made it a point to be the leader of these mini-harriers. Together with his leadership, the team began to mold themselves into a powerhouse at the A.C.C. level. Their level of achievement is a sure to be a precedentsetter for next year’s team. Congratulations to the 2001 A.C.C. Champions. May they continue to create their own impressive shadow.

This year’s 6th grade Track and Field team had an outstanding season winning every meet entered by a comfortable margin. The team capped off the season by winning both the ACC Championship and the Tri-County Championship. The team was led by Brandon Marti, Roberto Aran, Guillermo Echarte and Michael Cruz who in addition to scoring major points in the 6th grade meets were also able to score important points for the 7th and 8th grade team in some of their major meets. It has been a real pleasure to coach these young men. There is no doubt that the future of both the Belen Junior High and Varsity Track programs is bright with these young men ready to take their turn in being counted for the success of the program
