WelcometoHadestown:TeenEdition.
This show is about an old story - Orpheus and Eurydice - but thanks to these hardworking students, it doesn't feel old. It's about love, trust, and what it actually coststobelieveinsomethingyoucan'tsee.
Orpheuswalksintotheunderworldwithnothingbutasong,convincedthathislove stillmeanssomething,eveninthedarkestplaces.
Eurydice makes the kind of choice a lot of us quietly understand: she picks safety overtheunknown.
Caughtbetweenthemisaquestionthatkeepsshowingupinreallife:doweletfear drive,ordowechoosefaith?
The world of Hadestown reminds us how fear, scarcity, and self-interest can control people, but Orpheus acts differently. In Jesuit terms, he embodies accompaniment anddiscernment:walkingwithsomeoneintheirstruggle, andlisteningtothecallof love and justice even when it’s difficult. He shows us what it means to be “for and withothers,”actingforthesakeofanother.Andindoingso, heremindsusthathope isanactivechoice:acommitmenttocareforthewholeperson, eveninuncertainty: whatwecallcurapersonalis.
This production is extra special to me, personally. Partnering with Our Lady of Lourdes Academy, my alma mater, has been an experience I'll carry for a long time. Lauren C. Lopez (the choreographer) and I once shared the stage at OLLA, with Michelle Garcia-Bode leading us to success. Now we're all on the same side of the productiontable, standinginthewings, watchingnewstudentsfindtheirvoice.
Hadestown asks if a song can change the world. After watching these students pour themselvesintothis, withrealgrit, realtrust, andalotofheart,Ithinkitcan. Enjoytheshow.

The Humanities occupy a vital place in the life of a school community. At Belen Jesuit, drama is more than a creative outlet; it is an essential space where young people learn to interpret the human experience and cultivate empathy. This commitmentisdeeplyrootedintheJesuitintellectualtraditionandinthelifeofthe Churchitself.SincetheCounter-ReformationandtheCouncilofTrent(1545–1563), the Catholic Church has understood the arts not as ornament, but as a means of evangelization and encounter, using beauty to instruct, inspire, and draw souls toward the divine. As Saint John Paul II wrote in his Letter to Artists in 1999, "In order to communicate the message entrusted to her by Christ, the Church needs art." The Humanities, in this spirit, remain indispensable to Jesuit education, engagingboththeintellectandthesoul.
The Performing Arts program at Belen Jesuit is a vivid expression of this mission. Throughtheater, studentslearntoinhabitthehumanstory, grapplingwithquestions of love, sacrifice, justice, and redemption that have long defined the greatest works of art. In his 2011 book Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith, Bishop Robert Barron wrote: "Begin with the beautiful, which leads you to the good, which leads you to the truth." When our students perform, they participate in that sacred work, leadingtheaudiencefromwondertowardsomethingeternal.
It is a privilege to work alongside these young artists. I am continually struck by the genuinecuriosityandimaginationtheybringtoeverythingtheydo.PopeFrancisput it simply in his 2022 address to Catholic artists at the Apostolic Palace: "If there is beauty, itisbecauseGodisgoodandhegivesittous."Tonight, thatgiftmanifestson stage as the culmination of countless hours of rehearsal, collaboration, and creative disciplineforHisGreaterGlory.
As our Belen Thespians join Our Lady of Lourdes Academy to present Hadestown: TeenEdition, wecelebratenotjusttheperformancebuttheartistryanddevotionthat made it possible. The Jesuit tradition calls us to form the whole person, mind, body, and spirit, and the Humanities are essential to that formation. I hope you leave the theater tonight moved and inspired by the passion and courage these young performersbringtothestage.
