Welcome Bienvenidos
As we come to an end of the academic year 2008-2009, the spirit of teamwork and camaraderie at Belen is high. Like the psalmist, we can say: “How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!” (Psalm 133: 1) In this message I would like to share a few bits of information about the 2008-2009 year at Belen.
In January, there was a change of President. Fr. Marcelino Garcia, S.J., Sagua, completed a 25-year tenure as President and went on sabbatical. During Fr. Garcia’s presidency, Belen has grown to about 1,500 students and has been endowed with new buildings, including the Roca Theater, the Saladrigas Gallery, the Goizueta Gym and the new Administration Building. Very Rev. Adolfo Nicolas, S.J., new General of the Society of Jesus, appointed a new President: Fr. Pedro Suarez ’58, S.J. Fr. Suarez appointed a new administrative team that included Fr. Willie Garcia-Tuñón ‘87, S.J. as Principal, Mr. Thomas de Quesada ‘94 as Dean of Students and Fr. Ernesto F. Travieso, S.J. as Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations.
Graduation. Last June, 165 Belen seniors received their High School diploma. The graduation Mass was presided over by the Very Reverend Mark Lewis, S.J., Provincial of the New Orleans Province of the Society of Jesus and the commencement speaker was Dr. Modesto Maidique, outgoing President of Florida International University. Our graduates will be attending universities in the Fall such as Princeton, Brown, Georgetown, Fordham, Loyola-Chicago, Loyola-New Orleans, FIU, St Louis, Northwestern, and many other distinguished institutions.
Arts. Belen’s Ignatian Center for the Arts presented outstanding shows such as the play Tartuffe, directed by Mr. Leo Williams, the musical Godspell, directed by Mr. Francisco Padura, and the comedy Actor’s Nightmare, directed my Ms. Eliana Parenti, which were widely acclaimed by the local press. The seniors’ Film Festival in May exhibited a number of short films made during Mr. Johnny Calderin’s ‘92 course “Film Production.”
The Saladrigas Gallery showed two exhibits: one entitled “The Art of Being in Exile” during February-March 2009 by Julio Antonio, a young Cuban painter, and the other one in May with student paintings from Mr. Ignacio Font’s Art class.
Queridos Antiguos Alumnos,
Al llegar al final del año académico 2008-2009, existe un gran espíritu de trabajo en equipo y de camaradería en Belen. Como el salmista, podemos decir: “Cuán bueno y agradable es cuando los hermanos viven unidos!” (Salmo 133:1). En este mensaje, quisiera compartir con ustedes alguna información sobre el año 2008-2009 en Belen:
En Enero, hubo un cambio de Presidente. El P. Marcelino Garcia, S.J., de Sagua, terminó un período de 25 años como Presidente. Durante la presidencia del P. Garcia, Belen ha crecido hasta 1,500 estudiantes y ha construido el Teatro Roca, la Galeria Saladrigas, el Gimnasio Goizueta y el nuevo edificio de Administración. El Muy Reverendo Adolfo Nicolas, S.J., nuevo General de la Sociedad de Jesus, nombró un nuevo Presidente: el P. Pedro Suarez ‘58, S.J. El P. Suarez nombró un nuevo equipo administrativo que incluye al P. Willie Garcia-Tuñón ‘87, S.J. como Principal, el Sr. Thomas de Quesada ‘94 como Decano de Estudiantes y el P. Ernesto F. Travieso S.J. como Vice-Presidente para Desarrollo y Relaciones de Antiguos Alumnos.
The Jazz Band 79 under Prof. Marlene Urbay did a superb job and received second prize at a nationwide competition in Disney World and at the Tamiami Park Youth Fair. The Jazz Trio, an ensemble which is part of the Jazz Band, won first place at the Youth Fair.
Academics. The annual Goizueta Philosophy Symposium, held in April by Professor Roger Lund, invited Dr. Tony Lopez, a professor at St Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary, to give a lecture on Medieval Philosophy at the Roca Theater. The forensics team won trophies at the state and national levels. It was announced that two of our seniors were named National Merit Finalists.
Sports. Our students and teams won three State championships: swimming, cross country and water polo. The Miami Herald praised our coaches for our students’ accomplishments.
In spite of the financial crisis that everyone is experiencing, the Lord has bestowed many blessings on Belen this year. I send my greetings to all of the alumni, students, parents and friends and wish you all a restful and profitable summer. God bless every one of you!

Graduación. Este año, 165 estudiantes recibieron su Diploma de High School. La Misa de graduación fue presidida por el Muy Reverendo Mark Lewis, S.J., Provincial de la Sociedad de Jesús en la Provincia de New Orleans y el orador principal de la graduación fue el Dr. Modesto Maidique, Presidente saliente de la Universidad Internacional de la Florida. Nuestros graduados van a estudiar en el otoño en Universidades como Princeton, Brown, Georgetown, Fordham, Loyola-Chicago, LoyolaNew Orleans, FIU, St. Louis, Northwestern y otras distinguidas instituciones.
Artes. El Centro Ignaciano para las Artes presentó espectáculos excelentes, como la obra Tartuffe, dirigida por el Sr. Leo Williams, el musical Godspell, dirigido por el Sr. Francisco Padura, y la comedia Actor’s Nightmare, dirigida por la Sra. Eliana Parenti, que fueron muy elogiados por la prensa local. El Festival de Cine de los estudiantes de último año exhibió en Mayo películas cortas hechas durante las clases de “Producción de Películas” del Sr. Johnny Calderín.
Hubo dos exhibiciones en la Galería Saladrigas este año, una titulada “El Arte de Estar en el Exilio”, durante Febrero-Marzo 2009 del joven pintor Cubano Julio Antonio, y la otra en Mayo con pinturas de los estudiantes de la clase de Arte del Sr. Ignacio Font. La Banda de Jazz 79 bajo la dirección de la Profesora Marlene Urbay quedó en segundo lugar en las competencias nacionales en Disney World y en la Feria de la Juventud de Tamiami Park. El Trio de Jazz, que forma parte de la Banda de Jazz, quedó en primer lugar en la Feria.
Académicas. El Simposio anual Goizueta de Filosofía, organizado en Abril por el Profesor Roger Lund, invitó al Dr. Tony López, profesor de Teología del Seminario Regional San Vicente de Paul, a dar una conferencia en el Teatro Roca sobre Filosofia Medieval. El equipo de debates ganó trofeos a nivel estatal y nacional. Dos de nuestros estudiantes fueron Finalistas para Merito Nacional.
Deportes. Nuestros estudiantes y equipos ganaron tres campeonatos Estatales: natación, cross country y water polo. Nuestros entrenadores fueron distinguidos por el Miami Herald por sus logros. Debemos dar gracias al Señor por las muchas bendiciones otorgadas a Belen este año, a pesar de la crisis financiera que nos afecta a todos. A todos los Antiguos Alumnos, estudiantes, padres y amigos vayan mis saludos y mis deseos que tengan un verano tranquilo y provechoso. Que Dios bendiga a todos ustedes

Era Ends: Marcelino’s Milestones

Twenty five years ago, this school was struggling to regain its once powerful identity as an establishment of excellence, mainly because it was testing out the waters of a completely new country. Then Father Marcelino Garcia SJ, Sagua, became president.
In a quarter of a century, this school has undergone a complete rebirth; a transformation that has fostered a dominating presence in the city of Miami. Twenty five years ago, this school was a blank canvas, and all it took was a great visionary to be able to paint such a perfect picture for a school.
The list goes on and on: the Goizueta Gym, the Roca Theatre, technological advancement in the classrooms, the science pavilion, revamped outdoor athletic facilities, Villa Javier, where our very own Jesuits reside, and even a glossy administrative building which broke ground this past school year.
While the physical improvements of the school are impressive, to Father Marcelino, they are just icing on the cake in comparison to this school’s continuation of academic excellence. “Physical improvement is obviously nice, but I am most proud of the great academic complexity of the school. We have really created an environment where the administration works well together with a great teaching staff, which is a win-win situation for everyone,” said Father Marcelino.
When there is such a constant figure present at an institution, it is difficult to even fathom a different face at the head. However, Father Marcelino can assure everyone that his replacement, Father Pedro Suarez, SJ ‘58, will improve on the success that this school has been fortunate enough to enjoy over the last quarter century. “He is by far the best solution to replace me,” said Father Marcelino.
Although Father Marcelino may have accumulated a lengthy and impressive list of achievements, the one he takes most pride in does not even adhere to the academic realm.
The miniature zoo in the school may be seen as an exaggeration by some, but in a school that started from scratch and became a powerhouse on the corner of 6th street and 127 avenue, anything is truly possible. While the community will surely miss him, Father Marcelino will miss being the president of this school tremendously.
“I will miss the warmth of the people, everyone who was grateful for me serving them,” said Father Marcelino.
New Beginnings: Determined Duo

Before a flick of the pen and a day of ceremonies, Fr. General Adolfo Nicolas SJ wrote the letter delegating power from Fr. Marcelino Garcia, SJ, Sagua to Fr. Pedro Suarez SJ, ‘58. With the start of the new 2009 year, Fr. Suarez started his new tenure as president of the school. “Marcelino has been a great light for this school and Fr. Suarez will be a new light,” wrote Fr. Nicolas.
The President of the school is in charge of many of the financial dealings and transactions that the school undertakes. The main job is to make sure that things run smoothly and that the school is working appropriately. With many priests, faculty and teachers at hand during the delegation mass, Fr. Suarez accepted his new role of the school with graciousness and readiness. Stating his excitement for the new challenge, he claimed to be ready to push, and watch over 1500 plus students, faculty and staff.
On the other hand, Fr. Garcia said goodbye to the school he looked over for the past twenty-five years as President and Principal, with great admiration. “It [the school] became my pride and possession,” said Fr. Garcia.
After the mass, board members gathered in the Art Gallery of the Ignatius building to discuss financial matters and the current zoning issue. Full of alumni and fathers of current and past students, each stated the facts and figures they had acquired and discussed the financial issues that the school will endure going into a national economic crisis.
Next, associates and dignitaries gathered outside the new administration building for a blessing of the new offices and a small luncheon. The Jazz Band played many tunes as the members of the Student Council and other students watched from their seats. More speeches were made regarding the new changes to the school and the changes that were to come. “The success of the school hasn’t been mine; it’s been the work of everyone who cared for this school. Thank you for the past twenty-five years and making me the happiest man in the world,” said Fr. Garcia in his address.
The new president, Fr. Pedro Suarez SJ was born in Marinao, a province of Havana in Cuba. Born as the oldest of three to hardworking parents, Suarez felt the call to be a Jesuit priest while he was a student in Belen. “I was deeply moved by the example of hard work, dedication to others and personal holiness of Jesuit brothers and priests. Fr. Felipe Arroyo, my Spiritual Father, recommended that I attend college first and I did. I will always be thankful for that piece of advice,” said Fr. Suarez.
After, he attended Villanueva University in Havana and went to the Novitiate in the middle of his third year of college. It was there that he gained his strong interest in the field of mathematics. He earned his Bachelor’s degree at the end of his Philosophy studies from Fordham. Finally, after studying theology in Chicago and priestly ordination in Miami, Father Suarez went on to complete a PhD at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
Father Suarez feels that the school was in good hands during Fr. Marcelino’s twenty-five year tenure as President and Principal. “From my perspective as an outsider I believe that my friend Fr. Marcelino has been a visionary. He has loved Belen and helped it grow and develop tremendously,” said Father Suarez. “He has made a positive mark at Belen that will last for many years and for which we are all grateful.”
Fr. Suarez needed little time to get comfortable in his new job, as barely a week in; he hired Fr. Guillermo Garcia-Tuñon SJ, 87 to the position of school principal. “In most schools the job of president and principal are separate. The president is necessary to run the school and the finances and to overlook the general program. The job of the principal is to work with the president in overlooking the students, counseling department, athletics and disciplinarians, among other things,” said Father Suarez.
Fr. Garcia-Tuñon will look to do a fine job of helping Fr. Suarez and the school, as he has receives massive student support. “I am really excited about Fr. Willie being principal of the school. He’s been here a while and knows how the school works and functions. He will do great things in his new position,” said Benjamin Tyler ‘10.
Excited of the possibility of running the school and working with great people, Fr. Suarez has been grateful for the opportunity and hopes to make this year and his tenure in Belen a great one. “I thank everyone for their welcome and for the support I have felt, even before I officially began my work in January. I consider it a privilege to work at the school I attended as a young man. The school that I love, where I have taught and from which I graduated 50 years ago,” said Father Suarez with enthusiasm.

Al ser nombrado el P. Daniel Baldor, S.J. Rector del nuevo Colegio de Belén en Miami, él me pidió que lo ayudara a reorganizar la Asociación de Antiguos Alumnos que tan exitosamente funcionaba en Belén de la Habana. El régimen comunista de Cuba nos había dispersado hacia el exilio. Ya no sólo se trataba de llegar a los antiguos alumnos de Cuba, Belén y la Electromecánica; el colegio Dolores de Santiago de Cuba, Monserrat de Cienfuegos, Sagrado Corazón de Sagua la Grande, sino también a los nuevos antiguos alumnos de Belén de Miami. ¡Era una labor ingente!
Después de casi 50 años continuando la obra que había empezado en el exilio,el P. Francisco Barbeito, S.J., sigo ilusionado contactando y ayudando a comunicar a los miles de antiguos alumnos esparcidos por todo el mundo. Seguimos con el mismo espíritu de San Ignacio de Loyola, educando y formando jóvenes al servicio de los demás por amor a Dios: “Men for others.”
Hoy Belén de Miami, con 1500 estudiantes, es un colegio reconocido por su excelencia tanto en lo académico y cultural, como en los deportes. Pero lo que más lo caracteriza es su énfasis en el desarrollo espiritual, no sólo de los estudiantes y sus familiares, sino también de los antiguos alumnos y fieles amigos de tantos años. Esta es la gran familia de Belén.

Strengthening Our Spirituality
When I was sent to teach at Belen in 1968, before I was ordained a Jesuit priest, I encountered a tradition and a spirit that had been transplanted from Cuba. The small building in “Calle Ocho” was a far cry from the magnificence of the Belen structure in Havana. Yet, the spirit of Belen in exile was the same, as well as the ideals and tradition …. personifying the same spirit I received during my Jesuit formation.
Belen has grown to be one of the best schools the Jesuits have in the United States. It serves not only the children of Cuban exiles, but also young men from all ethnic and national origins seeking a solid, integrated, and values-oriented education.
Belen continues the five-hundred-year tradition of St. Ignatius of Loyola forming “men for others” in the true teachings of the Gospels. Our students, Alumni, and their families receive this strengthening and inspiring spirit to better face the new challenges of the Third Millenium.
The thousands of Alumni from Belen in Miami, Belen and Electromecánica in Havana …. and the other Jesuit schools in Cuba …. Dolores in Santiago, Monserrat in Cienfuegos, Sagrado Corazón in Sagua la Grande …. form part of our large extended family. It is the responsibility of the Development and Alumni Relations Office to continue nurturing and sharing this family spirit.
Today, in the dawn of a new administration, and in a refreshing new phase in the history of Belen, I feel proud to work on and help continue our Jesuit spirit and tradition, with the grace of God.

Program Highlights: Jr. High 2-0, Dade County Champions, 1st Place-Belen Invitational, Ransom Invitational, and MIS Championships
Defending the state title was the swim team’s main goal. At the beginning of the season, the team was well on their way to recapturing the state title when Head Coach Kirk Peppas suffered a mild stroke and was sidelined for the rest of the season. Losing coach Peppas hurt the team severely, but it also served as motivation for the swimmers. Assistant coaches Kyle Hastings and Javier Araque took over Peppas’ job and did the best they could to keep the team in its usual routine. To make matters worse, the team lost the district championship by six points due to a technicality, which disqualified the 200 freestyle relay from the meet and the rest of the season. The team quickly overcame this adversity at the Regional Meet and avenged their earlier loss against Boca Raton at Districts winning by four points. Going into the State Meet facing the odds and being down by as much as 18 points, the Wolverines came back and for the third year in a row as State Champions. They were helped by the first place finishes of the 200 medley relay, the 400 freestyle relay, and Sophomore Carlos Omaña, who won the 200 individual medley. The entire team worked together to get the job done, led by captains seniors Pablo Morejon and Julio Lopez who qualified for States. The team never gave up. These achievements do not happen by chance they practice twice a day, six times a week, as early as five in the morning before coming to school and the parental support is second to none. Congratulations on a great year.

Program Highlights: Jr. High 1st Place-Dade County, ACC, TriCounty, Catholic State, Belen, Holy Rosary, Arch. Carroll, Run for the Stars and Ransom Meets, Sixth Grade 1st Place-Arch. Carroll, 3rd Place-ACC and Tri-County.
A running man’s eyes can tell you where he has been and where he wants to go. This focused ONE unit of runners will forever show in their eyes what they have accomplished and how relentless their drive to succeed in life now is. A gaze into the focused eyes of any of the 29 runners of the 2009 team will show what it takes to be the best cross country team out of over 500 in Florida of all classes. It is important to mention this was the first time in the program’s 38-year history that this was accomplished throughout the entire season. They captured commanding victories at all the major invitationals and they capped the season off by winning the program’s 4th State Title. This accomplishment marks the first time a Miami Dade County Boys cross country team in 62 years has won 3 consecutive State titles. In addition, this group of men finished the season ranked first amongst all classes with a team average of 15:56 and mere 34 second spread from 1 through 5. The state championship meet squad was lead by Joe Dorfman, followed by Elliot Clemente, Larry Duran, Lazaro Fields, Branden Martinez, Gaby Loret de Mola and Joe Lindsay. It is also worth noting this ONE team attained a Nike Team National ranking of 6th in the Southeast Region. This team goes down in history as being one of the most talented but more importantly it goes down as the most committed, a stare into their focused eyes will clearly show you this.

Ana Fernández, daughter of Jorge Fernández-Ceballos ‘61, featured in the Miami Herald for her work as a muralist. Patrick Aronson ‘08 published his first novel, “The Little Boy Story” and started his own on-line publishing company called NewtonLocke.com.
Jose Ramón Rodriguez ‘77, Chair of KPMG Foundation, was appointed to the NC State Board of CPA Examiners.
Jose A. Garrido Jr. ‘72 was inducted into the Miami Dade College Hall of Fame.
Peter Cruz-Gordillo ‘07 was featured in the Institute for Genome Sciences & Policy magazine at Duke University. Carlos Garcia ‘89 hosts a radio show on WDNA - 88.9 FM dedicated to promote live music impacting South Florida. Marta and Ernesto Prieto ‘46 celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary.
