Queridos Antiguos Alumnos y amigos:

Welcome to Traditions, the new magazine for the Belen Alumni Association of Jesuit Schools from Cuba and Miami. Traditions reflects the changes that have occurred since the Alumni Congress in 2004, where you, the alumni, through thoughtful reflection, looked for the Association to evolve and change. Now more than ever, the Association is reaching out to all of our Alumni – from both Cuba and Miami, and reaching out to the Belen Jesuit and Miami communities as well. We are excited by our new vision and hope you will join us as we move forward. Traditions will be published biannually, and will call to mind many of the aspects we grew to love and expect over the years of the Alumni Magazine, first published in Miami in 1961, and Ecos de Belén, which was published in Cuba. The name itself inspires us to care and respect for our past as we look to the future. This is one of the many aspects that makes Belen Jesuit a jewel in the heart of Miami. Belen Jesuit is a place that brings together with reverence and respect the two worlds and two cultures of the many Jesuit schools that were in Cuba and Belen in Miami. Also, expect to receive a short newsletter sent at other times of the year.

With other new initiatives like MAGIS (Making a Gift in Service, the community service committee), the Belen NetCommunity (our online community for alumni and friends of the Association and Belen), and our commitment to involving our alumni in the daily lives of our current students with career assemblies and mentoring programs, the Belen Alumni Association of Jesuit Schools from Cuba and Miami is making an impact and calling us all once again to live the motto of all Jesuit schools, “Men for Others.” Additionally, the election of a President and a Board of Directors for the first time since 1959 demonstrates our commitment to alumni voices and autonomy.

And while there are many new endeavors in the Association, the core beliefs of our organization remain the same. Shifting to Spiritual Director of the Association, Fr. Juan Manuel Dorta-Duque, SJ ‘40 will continue to provide spiritual guidance and inspiration to our over 5,000 alumni and their friends and family. The administrative duties of the Association now fall to Alex Zequeira ’90, the recently appointed Executive Director. Joining Fr. Dorta-Duque and Mr. Zequeira are Alberto Camacho ‘40, Pablo Carreño ’42 and Roberto Borbolla ’56, who volunteer their time and talents in the Alumni Office. Unified in its commitment to serve the alumni from the Jesuit schools from Cuba and Miami, the Alumni Office will continue to be open and available to all those whom it serves.

We count on your help to continue the mission of the Alumni Office and Association started in 1918. Enclosed with this magazine is an envelope for your 2006 Alumni Dues. We hope you will continue to support the Association with your $50 membership dues. Last year over 20% of our alumni contributed to this fund. This year we look to climb to 30% as we expand the programs and services available to you.

Please be sure to come and visit the new alumni office now located at Belen Jesuit. We welcome the opportunity to see you back at your alma mater.

Bienvenidos a Traditions, la nueva Revista para la Asociación de Antiguos Alumnos de los Colegios Jesuitas de Cuba y Miami. Traditions refleja los cambios que han ocurrido desde el Congreso de Antiguos Alumnos en el año 2004, donde ustedes, los Antiguos Alumnos, en base a una reflexión profunda, buscaron la mejor manera de que la Asociación evolucionara.y se actualizara. Ahora más que nunca, la Asociación está tratando de llegar a todos nuestros Antiguos Alumnos, de Cuba y de Miami, y también a la Comunidad Jesuita y a la comunidad de Miami. Estamos muy excitados por nuestra nueva visión y esperamos que todos ustedes se unan a nuestros esfuerzos.

La publicación de Traditions será dos veces al año, y enfocará muchos de los aspectos que amamos cada vez más de los Alumni Magazine publicados desde 1961 en Miami como continuación de los Ecos de Belén publicados en Cuba. El nombre, Traditions, nos inspira a querer y respetar nuestro pasado mientras miramos al futuro. Este es uno de los muchos aspectos que hacen que Belen Jesuit sea una joya en el medio de Miami. Every one of us carries within the seeds of Magis. Whether we spent any of our youth walking the galerías of the Colegio de Belen or the hallways of Belen Jesuit, we were always carefully taught that the priority in our life was to be: “Un hombre para los demás”, a “Man for others”. This fact was made evident just prior to our 150th Anniversary Congress when there was an outpouring of social service projects from the Alumni. Eduardo Dominguez, a graduate of the Electromecanica in Cuba and a member of Magis, recalls the reasons why he and his classmates were moved to present a project at the Congress: “ We have enjoyed the benefits of our Jesuit education so much that we wanted to help educate others that could benefit from our specialized knowledge.”

Through the years, the Belen Alumni Association has been, first and foremost, a stalwart bastion in support of our school. Starting in Cuba, where the school enjoyed its well earned reputation of being the best in the country and where most of the social service work was planned and carried out by the stu-

dent and adult congregations under the tutelage of the ample Jesuit presence in the island.

Things changed dramatically after the exile to Miami, however. The Association had its hands full just trying to make, maintain and sustain contacts with the widespread alumni. Our beloved Fr. Dorta saw to it that the classes kept in touch with each other and with the burgeoning Belen Jesuit in Miami. He saved the Association!

In time, however, another understanding grew within the graduates that there was a need to give back to our community and that the Jesuit presence was no longer of the magnitude required for the job. Many Belen graduates, independently, were serving their communities but the time had come for a service organization to be formed to channel and focus the potential force for good that our Alumni could become.

As a result of the Congress and the Alumni Forum that followed it, a new Association Lay Board as well as a new social service committee was instituted. And after much thought, the name MAGIS was adopted for this committee. MAGIS is the “More” Saint Ignatius spoke of, the “More” so many of us feel we should do before our time down here is over. Germán Muñoz ‘68 presented a project at the Alumni Congress to help the Sisters of Charity. German tells us: “I have been working with the sisters for many years, doing whatever I could do at their soup kitchen or at events like these. I thought this would be a great charity for the alumni to get involved in.” After many meetings and serious consideration, a few salient aspects of MAGIS’ mission became evident:

1. We should always endeavor to work as a “Belen Community”, where both mentoring of the students as well as family participation would be encouraged.

2. We would prefer to stress the personal service aspect of our work. We do not want to become just another fundraising group. We firmly believe that however beneficial our activities might be to others, they will not match the benefits gained by those of us who share of our time.

That is why we say that our name means “Making A Gift In Service.”

3. We would, for the time being, only lend our efforts to existing charities, which we have begun to evaluate for our participation.

MAGIS set out on its quest by first establishing close ties with the Belen Jesuit Key Club, the student service group at the school, and then identifying charities in the MiamiDade area to help. We have worked with the Sisters of Mercy during their turkey and clothing drives for the migrant workers in Homestead as well as during the Thanksgiving dinner at their soup kitchen. Orlando Garcia ’88 and his family help hand out toys in Homestead. “Having my family involved in helping the needy is very important to me. I look forward to more of these opportunities.” Sebastian Juncadella ‘08, (pictured right), says “It was great to work together with my family, my classmates and the alumni. It gives me a good feeling about “The family of Belen Jesuit.”

Also, we worked for their Christmas toy and clothing drives for the migrant workers, collecting toys at the school and organizing a caravan of students, families and alumni to drive to Homestead for their distribution.

Among the many projects we plan to undertake, the adoption of the Gesu parish as a special place for us to help, ranks very high. Gesu “was” Belen when we made the transition to Miami and it still occupies a very important place in our hearts.

Pastor Fr. Eddy Alvarez S.J. needs our help and we will try to do all we can to help him.

On April 1st, the Belen community of Alumni, students and educators met at Gesu to start a project to paint the Façade of the church. We hope this will be only the beginning of a close relationship between MAGIS and Gesu.

MAGIS is also planning to help various groups that collect goods for shipment to the Dominican Republic, Honduras, etc. and to foster an internship program for Belen students and recent graduates. We hope that, in time, the professional community within the Alumni will volunteer to help set up medical, legal and counseling clinics in needy areas. In order to keep track of both the ongoing projects and the Alumni volunteers, MAGIS will soon be setting up a desk at the school with a dedicated phone line and a computer terminal. The MAGIS committee has no limits as to its membership, so if you are interested in volunteering, no matter how much or how little you can spend, please, call us. JOIN THE MAGIS MOB (MEN OF BELEN)!

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION NEWS

ASSOCIATION ELECTS OFFICERS

In May of 2004, hundreds of alumni united at the first Alumni Congress of Jesuit Schools from Cuba and Miami with a directive from both the Society of Jesus and their Alma Mater – reflect on and respond to the needs of a growing Alumni community. As a result of this Congress and the work done on that day, an Alumni Forum was created to serve as an interim governing body for the Association during its transition. With the drafting of the Association’s bylaws, their approval by the Society of Jesus and the Alumni at the Alumni Day held in May of 2005, and the hiring of Alex Zequeira ’90 as its Executive Director, the Association was acting on the charge given by its own alumni body. The final step in this reorganization process came on the Sunday of Tombola 2006.

On February 26, 2006 ninety-four Class Delegates for the Belen Alumni Association of Jesuit Schools from Cuba and Miami gathered for the first time in 46 years to elect a Board of Directors and President.

The event began with a mass with the delegates and their families said by Fr. Marcelino Garcia, SJ, President/Principal of Belen Jesuit. Many of the families who accompanied the delegates went off to enjoy Tombola while the class representatives arrived in the Ramon Guitierras Library to begin the business of the day. Fr. Juan Manuel Dorta-Duque, SJ ’40 welcomed the group and congratulated many of them on the awesome task and labor of love they had undertaken with the “new” Association. Next, Executive Director Alex Zequeira ’90 presented the accomplishments of the Association over the last year. The Alumni Office assisted with over 10 reunions, organized two major events – the Fr. Dorta-Duque Celebration and the

Belen vs. Columbus Tailgate, recruited the 94 delegates, supported the Community Service efforts of MAGIS with the Belen Jesuit Key Club, and supported and ran the most recent elections.

After Alex Zequeira’s presentation, Fernando Arán ’75 gave the delegates an update on the current challenge Belen Jesuit and its alumni are facing with certain pastors from the Archdiocese of Miami. The formal presentations concluded with the introduction of the candidates running for office and their speeches which in cluded very powerful stories and reflections on Belen and what the school and community has meant to each candidate, the delegates began voting by secret ballot. One by one the ballots were dropped into the box and finally the counting could begin.

After one run-off election, the final votes were cast and the alumni had elected its Board of Directors and President for the first time in nearly five decades. The excited group gathered for their first photo together surrounded by excited delegates. The “new” Belen Alumni Association of Jesuit Schools from Cuba and Miami had its leaders in place.

Alumni make news in the media

Whether standing before a microphone, or punching out sentences on a laptop, alumni in the field of mass communication have faced down some challenging circumstances in their hometown: hurricanes, immigration, and political imbroglios just to name some.

Below a few of our distinguished grads share their stories and insights.

JOSE PAÑEDA, BELEN CLASS OF 1982

“Get your foot in the door as soon as you can in whatever capacity is available,” recommends veteran Heat broadcaster, Joe Pañeda. Pañeda, is a Spanish Radio and Television Announcer and the Senior Advisor for the Hispanic Broadcasting and Marketing for The Heat Group.

He broadcasts every HEAT game in Spanish on WQBA 1140 AM and advises the HEAT in their Hispanic marketing efforts. A typical day involves reading dozens of newspaper articles, answering e-mails, studying and preparing for each team, and talking to players and coaches from each team.

At Belen, the teacher who influenced him most was Social Studies Chair, Mr. Pat Collins. “He got me interested in politics,” Paneda recalls.

TOM LLAMAS, BELEN CLASS OF 1997

Tom Llamas is General Assignment Reporter for NBC 6. He covers a variety of stories in South Florida including crime, politics, and Cuban-American affairs.

“The funniest moment happened my senior year. I forgot how it started but someone ended up, in the middle of class on top of a teacher’s desk in a surfing position. At that moment Mr. Leo Nuñez walked in and shocked by what he saw, screamed: ‘What the dickens?’ Llamas recalls.

At Belen, Llamas had many mentors. “I was influ-

enced the most my Mr. Leo Williams. I learned public speaking and vocal storytelling fundamentals from him. He is a Belen treasure and I would not be where I am today if I had not taken his classes. Mr.Tony Alexander made reading assignments enjoyable. Ms. Annie Menocal sparked my interest in current events with her mock debate exercises. Fr. Eddy Alvarez, S.J., taught me to always be ready with those oral philosophy exams. Ms. Carol Vila was a lot of fun and really cared about her students. I still have my Cuban History book from Dr. Armando Rodriguez’s Latin American History class. I’ll never forget Mr. Leo Nuñez busting out a Shakespearean monologue here and there while teaching Art History. And, it was in Ms. Cristina Ramirez’s Language Arts class where I really developed a passion for writing.

A typical work day begins like this-- “I come in at 2:30 pm and usually I’m out the door on a breaking story. I have two to three hours to put my package (on-air story) together for the 5 or 6 o’clock news. If it’s a big story, I’ll follow up on it and make it fresh with new details for the 10 and 11 o’clock news. I’m usually live around three or four times a day.”

Llamas advises aspiring reporters to read and write as much as possible. “Read newspapers, blogs, magazines, non-fiction novels like In Cold Blood, and The Devil in the White City,” he recommends. “Listen to the news on the radio and watch it on television. Practice storytelling. Take speech, drama, and journalism courses,” he adds.

HECTOR FLORIN, BELEN CLASS OF 1995

Hector Florin is a Palm Beach County government reporter for The Palm Beach Post

His favorite Belen memory is the senior retreat. “Everyone seemed to put all the high school posturing behind them for a few days. Lots of tears were shed and there were many good moments. I think it helped

strengthen the bond that was evident just last October during our 10-year reunion,” he says.

The teachers he recalls as influencing him the most include Br. Gerry Garcia and Mr. Jorge Martinez. “Ms. Cristina Ramirez was the coolest and Mr. Ralf Ledesma was a mentor, adviser, and friend.”

Belen taught Florin to be inquisitive, analytical, and to respect others.

A big story Florin has worked on involves a $500 million-plus taxpayer investment coming to Palm Beach known as The Scripps Research Institute. “There is a very close eye placed on the local politicians over how they can get this jobfueling, state-industry-reshaping project off the ground. And, it’s not been easy,” he explains.

He encourages future journalists to be curious. “Don’t box yourself into one type of interest (features, or a subsection of it, or just sports). Realize the good you can do when telling a story, love telling it, and always seek room to improve communicating the written word.”

ADRIAN SAINZ, BELEN CLASS OF 1993

Adrian Sainz works for the Associated Press, the world’s largest newsgathering organization with over 4,000 employees and bureaus all over the world. Sainz plans, reports, edits, and writes stories. His first responsibility is breaking news. He also covers entertainment, culture, and the Cuban-American community.

With his trademark Cheshire cat grin, Sainz remembers some of his high school antics. “I used to climb into the roof of the old journalism classroom (when now Head Librarian and then newspaper adviser Ms. Sylvia Hernandez taught the class), crawl around up there, and peek into other people’s classrooms.”

Sainz’s journalism class with Ms. Cristina Ramirez was the most influential. He also credits English teacher the late Mr. Robert De Los Santos and philosophy teacher Fr. Mendez S.J. Assistant Principal Mr. Jose Roca and history teacher Mr. Jorge Martinez were also mentors.

“The best way to live life, and to be a journalist, is to be honest with yourself and with those working and living around you. An interview subject or an editor, usually know when you are being disingenuous or manipulative. Honesty (i.e. accuracy, truth) is a cornerstone of journalism ethics,” he says.

The most hectic workday for Sainz lasted 18 hours – Sept. 11, 2001. “Within hours, we had the names of most of the terrorists, and we had found out that some of them lived in South Florida. By the end of the day, we were talking to people in Broward County who had face-to-face contact with Mohamed Atta and MarwanalShehhi.”

OSCAR CORRAL, BELEN CLASS OF 1992

“I’m finishing a quiet lunch, biting into my media noche. My phone rings. A source is telling me that something serious is going down, a politician is about to get indicted, floods have killed hundreds in Haiti or the Dominican Republic, and I have to get on a plane in an hour. A Cuban exile militant has sneaked into the country to ask for asylum. I leave the restaurant cursing the day I chose journalism as a career. At that point, most reporters enter The Zone. Everything but the story is invisible and irrelevant. E-mails from bosses, phone calls from the wife, a fire alarm going off in the building are on mute. A few hours later, it’s 9 p.m.”

That’s a hectic day for Miami Herald Reporter, Oscar Corral.

Corral recalls his Belen days with the same descriptive style. “Having thendisciplinarian, Mr. Jimmy Perez let us choose between detention or paddling,” is one of his most memorable Belen moments. “I’d stuff my pants with toilet paper to pad the blows and take it like a man.”.

The teacher who influenced him most was Mr. Robert De Los Santos. According to Corral, De los Santos was, “a cynical, Ivy League-educated grouch.”

“He had this air about him as though he were too brilliant to be saddled with the tedious task of educating spoiled boys. But his assignments were incredibly unique. For example, he made us write critical pieces on albums of our choosing, such as Pink Floyd’s The Wall. He was the first teacher who taught me that writing was something you had to feel, as much as learn.” Mr. De Los Santos went on to

teach at Carrollton. Sadly, he died a few years ago after battling a long illness. Corral learned many lessons at Belen. “Rewards within the system are sometimes designed to stifle as much as exalt. Always think before you speak. No metas la pata. Don’t limit your friends to a clique. Be careful who you’re mean to when you’re young. Reserve a healthy amount of skepticism toward all non-scientific lessons spoon-fed to you in a classroom, a college auditorium, a corporate setting, a political speech, etc.”

Corral advises aspiring journalists to intern at different newspapers during college, move away from home for a few years, avoid writing opinions, focus on the facts, and learn about documentary filmmaking, photography, and web technology.

RON RAMOS, BELEN CLASS OF 1981

“Lead by example and invest in people. At Belen, you were always surrounded by great people, students and teachers. We were in the ‘old’ school, really terrible physical facilities - classes with no windows, no athletic fields, etc. We had to run a mile each way to get to soccer practice. Yet, most of the people excelled in amazing ways. It has always stayed with me - surround yourself with great people and as a group you can accomplish great things.”

As the Sports Editor for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Ronnie Ramos remembers two favorite teachers, Mr. Pat Collins and Ms. Sigrid Bango. Mr. Collins demonstrated a great passion for current events while Ms. Bango served as a mentor who took the time to explain. She also demonstrated a genuine interest in things that mattered to students.

Ramos manages a staff of 30 reporters and editors who cover all four major pro sports, the two biggest college football and basketball conferences in the country, and produce one of the largest sports sections in the United States.

Ramos advises aspiring journalists to get experience by writing for their high school and college papers. He also encourages any alums to call or e-mail him for more information.

News Maker - Emilio Marrero ‘85

Imagine having to quickly shutter up your house only to spend the next 40 hours straight broadcasting live coverage of Hurricane Wilma? How about handling the top news stories of the day on a moment’s notice? Events like the ValuJet flight 592 crash or the murder of fashion designer, Gianni Versace, are only two of the many important news stories Emilio Marrero, ’85, News Director at WLTV-Univision 23, has faced. Marrero is responsible for all operational, editorial, and budgetary supervision of South Florida’s number one news program, Noticias 23. Looking back, Marrero recalls Ms. Sigrid Bango and Mr. Pat Collins as having had lasting influences. “Ms. Bango got me hooked on public speaking and taught me how to prepare for a presentation. To this day, I still use some of what I learned,” he says. “As a dual major at UM, Broadcast Journalism and Politics

and Public Affairs, Mr. Collins’ courses prepared me. I am able to understand and better grasp coverage of local, state, and federal politics, as well as the electoral process. That was a big help in 2000 when we weren’t sure who had really won the presidency in the state of Florida!” he recalls.

Marrero fondly remembers former principal, the late Father Jose M. Izquierdo, S.J., for teaching him the value of discipline.

Marrero advises young, would-be journalists to be prepared for anything but banker’s hours. “You will work holidays, nights, weekends, and any other shift you can imagine. You will not be bored. Not everyone will be a reporter or anchor. There are a lot of ‘behind-the-scenes’ positions that are available. You must take advantage of your college internships,” he suggests.

CELEBRAMOS AL P. DORTA-DUQUE

El sábado, 23 de septiembre, 2005 celebramos con una alegre fiesta bailable amenizada por la Orquesta Continental Brass el doble acontecimiento de nuestro querido P. Juan Manuel Dorta-Duque, SJ, ese día cumplía su ochenta y tres onomástico y cincuenta desde su ordenación comc sacerdote.

Alex Zequeira, Director Ejecutivo de nuestra Asociación en unión con otro antiguo alumno y profesor en Belén, Tommy DeQuesada ‘94, presentaron en el Teatro Roca a los más de 300 asistentes un video sobre la vida ejemplar de sacrificio del Padre Dorta, pocos han tenido una vida tan fructífera de ayuda al prójimo como Juan Manuel. El ha tocado la vida de miles de personas en varios países y su sonrisa nunca se ha apagado.

Esa noche él pudo disfrutar en unión de varios miembros de su familia el reconocimiento por medio del agradecimiento, cariño y respeto que todos los presentes le otorgaron, tanto los jovenes como los no tan jóvenes, todos lo reconocimos por igual.

Kicking off the football season and the alumni events for the fall were Juan Lucas Alvarez ‘89, Alex Brito ‘89, Carlos Garcia ‘89, and Jose Pañeda ‘82 at the Belen-Columbus tailgate. The event brought more than 1000 alums and their families and 8000 fans to FIU’s stadium for the game.

ALUMNI EVENTS

The Association continued its mission of bringing alumni and friends of Belen Jesuit back to campus or to events outside the school.

After helping with a dozen reunions, the Alumni Office turned its attention to the Belen vs. Columbus football game tailgate where a combined Belen and Columbus crowd came together under the tent at FIU. Young and old, family and friends witnessed a great football game and even better community celebration.

Other events included the dedications of the Gaston and Teresita Cantens Wing, the Carlos Barañano Technology Center and the Garrido Family Tower. The Class of 1985 began a new tradition as their class hosted “Rip it Up” - the Fr. Ripoll 3 on 3 basketball tournament with all proceeds going to the Ripoll Scholarship Fund. Monthly events continued with the Alumni Luncheon held the last Friday of every month and the Alumni Mass at Gesu Church on every first Friday.

Keeping Connected and Connections. Fr. Willie Garcia-Tuñon, S.J. ‘87 and Alex Zequeira ‘90 visit with the alumni living and studying at the University of Florida. The group gathered for mass and dinner. The reunion was made possible with the help of Fr. Gillespie and Fr. Mesa, S.J. who work in the Gainesville parish of St. Agustine.

The entire Belen Jesuit Community supports events like the Golf Tournament that provides scholarship funds for the hundreds of students on financial assistance at the school.

8th Annual Father Izquierdo Golf Tournament

The Eighth Annual Fr. Izquierdo S.J. Memorial Golf Classic was the most successful tournament to date. Together, almost 350 golfers and over 100 sponsors gathered on December 17, 2005 at Doral Golf Resort to help Belen Jesuit and to have a great time.

With the support of presenting Sponsors ACGG Development Group which includes Fernando Arán ‘75, Jay Guarch (parent ‘10), and Oscar Garcia ‘93 and Boschetti Capital Partners, LLC led by Jose Boschetti (parent ‘11), the turnout exceeded years past and we look forward to the participation and continued generosity of our contributors in the coming year. A warm and heartfelt thank you to all the participants who, year in and year out, express their love and support of Belen Jesuit by sponsoring and participating in this annual event in the life of our school. Over 50 students have received a scholarship thanks to your efforts over the past eight years.

News from Belen Jesuit Prep

SENIORS NAMED NATIONAL MERIT FINALISTS

Academic excellence has been a cornerstone of the Belen education in both Cuba and Miami. For decades Belen Jesuit as a school and its students have been recognized locally, nationally and even internationally for their exceptional work.

This fall is no different as a flood of accolades have been bestowed on the School as well as its faculty and students.

Measuring academic achievement and excellence can be a difficult task. In most cases schools and other institutions will use standardized tests as a bench mark for success. Students at Belen take the PSAT and PLAN as a sophomore and junior in preparation for the SAT and ACT respectively. Members of the Class of 2006 were among a list released last month of National Merit Finalists in recognition for their success and achievement on the PSAT. Congratulations to Julio D. Egusquiza and Jorge L. Gomez.

INAUGURAL JUNIOR THESPIANS

Ten members of Belen’s inaugural Troupe 88710 competed on Saturday at the District 4 Junior Thespian Festival. The Troupe’s production of “Us and Them” garnered two trophies and Matt Fernandez and Andres Novoa were named to the all-star cast. Brix Gomez captured a superior rating while Danny Leonard and Matt Fernandez secured an excellent rating in monologues. The ensemble acting team of Danny Leonard, Enrique Narciso, and Andres Novoa received an excellent rating. Frank Oliva received an excellent ofr his costume design and took the critics’ choice award for scene design. The Troupe will now move on to the State Festival.

STUDENTS MARCH FOR LIFE

members of the House and Senate encouraging them to vote in favor of life in upcoming legislation. One of the highlights of the experience was the participation in the mass at the Basilica of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception where over 150 priests, 30 bishops, and 10 cardinals celebrated the Eucharist in the presence of tens of thousands of people.

Congratulations to David Sigurani ‘06 who is one of 20 students in the United States to be awarded a summer internship at UCLA writing and producing a TV series while taking classes.

FRESHMAN VISIT THE MIDDLE AGES

Welcome to the Middle Ages. World History students recently prepared for and participated in the Medieval Faire. Royal subjects considered thier interests and talents in choosing the right part to play in the Faire. The Knights researched their role in society, made weapons, and taught future knights the method of jousting. The Monks taught us to sing in Latin - the Gregorian Chant. The Artisans and Craftsmen researched the arts of the medieval times. Many artisans sold their wares at the Medieval Auction! Other craftsmen designed pouches and taught their fellow craftsmen to make them. The Jugglers, Jesters, and Musicians displayed their sense of humor in dressing in funny hats and tights! The Peasants made their debut sporting handspun clothing made of Burlap Fabric and designer shoes made of cardboard and yarn! Each of the Royal Subjects - 140 men did an outstanding job of replicating life the Medieval times.

BELEN LIBRARY NOT JUST FOR STUDENTS

On January 23, 2006 Fr. Willie García-Tuñón, S.J. ‘87 And 12 Belen students participated in the March for Life in Washington DC. This annual event attracts over 150,000 people to our nation’s capital to protest the legalization of abortion and defend the right to life. Together with students from other Catholic schools in Miami, the Belen students marched through the streets of DC and finished their trek in front of the Supreme Court Building. The Ramon Guiteras Memorial Library has undergone major renovations in the last year. We have a new cork floor that not only looks good but it is easy to care for and great for sound absorption. We have new lamps on every table to improve the lighting in the Reading Room. We also have new shelving for our book collection, which is now around 35,000 books. In addition, we have purchased a collection of 11,000 e-books. The ebooks, together with our subscription to the very best databases, extend the access to our library, so that our

MATH HONOR SOCIETY EXCELS

Mu Alpha Theta is the honor society that recognizes students who have excelled in mathematics. Members are required to mentor struggling students in need of math help and also participate in competitions around the state on an individual and team basis. Club members compete in six levels: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Precalculus, Calculus and Statistics. On Saturday, January 7th, at the FAU Regional Competition the Algebra I team, composed of Christian Oliveros, Gabriel Campo, Jonathan Ambut and Alejandro Perez, won the 3rd place trophy out of 8 schools. They also excelled in the individual test winning the 6th and 11th place trophies respectively out of 24 students. The Algebra II team composed of Luis Ares, Oscar Londoño, Ale Jerez and Andres Simauchi also won a 3rd place team trophy out of 22 schools. Luis Ares placed 13th out of 112 students individually. The best team we have this year is Precalculus with their 2nd place team trophy. Rafael Romero, Daniel Urgelles, Marcello Delgado and Jose Cabal-Ugaz make up this extraordinary team. They also shine individually with a 3rd, 4th, and 11th place respectively out of 177. This is not an easy task and was accomplished through their dedication, practice and hard work. That day was the best we had done as a group and left with the 4th place sweepstakes trophy out of 35 schools. Congratulations on behalf of Mu Alpha Theta and the Belen community!! We are very proud and expect many more great things! Throughout the second semester we have 5 more competitions to attend, a state convention and a national convention in Colorado. We hope to bring back some trophies.

AN EDUCATION OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM

Experience, reflection, and action have always been at the core of Ignatian pedagogy and the education at Belen Jesuit. Travel experiences have become a very important way for students to experience firsthand what they learn in the classroom. With international excursions to the Galapagos Islands, Italy, the Dominican Republic, and China as well as domestic travel to Boston and Hawaii. Belen students experienced the joy of travel

and the valuable education available in full emersion in another culture.

Reaching as far out as China and as close as Boston, this summer alone over 200 Belen students experienced an educational experience unmatched by many schools in the city of Miami. “We are fortunate to be able to go on trips like these; it makes working hard during the year worth it!” exclaimed 8th grader Lazaro Rodriguez after spending the first week of June in Boston with the Social Studies Department’s Patriot Program led by veteran teacher Eugene Zoller

The Belen trips are done by certain groups or departments for various reasons. Some are purely academic, while others are geared for exposure to different cultures. One trip, the Belen Youth Mission trip to the Dominican Republic has been an ongoing event for over 25 years. Started by Fr. Eduardo Alvarez, S.J. ‘64 and recently run by Fr. Willie Garcia-Tuñon, S.J. ‘87 the trip for many can be a life-changing experience.

“The time we spent with the Dominmicanos and the work we did along side them made my trip worth it. It opened my eyes to the suffering that exists,” said sophomore Rudy Villanueva who went on his first trip this past summer to Monte Adentro. During the trip, the group of 22 students led by Ivan Santa-Cruz ’96 and Alex Zequeira ’90 began the construction of a chapel in the rural town. The construction should be done in time for a smaller group to return in October or November to finish painting.

Besides the trip to Boston, The Social Studies Department also traveled to China with its Overseas Study Program. In its 12th year, the program provides students with an international immersion experience. In July 40 students and 5 chaperones traveled 27 hours to arrive in Beijing. Viewing history up close, students visited Xi’an’s Terracota Warriors, Beijing’s Forbidden

Palace and Ming Tombs, and gazed into the future while visiting Hong Kong and Shanghai. Led by group moderators Charles Cleveland, Thomas de Quesada ’94, and Department Chair Patrick Collins, the students participated in a once in a lifetime experience.

Senior Chris Gonzalez stated “There are events that make you realize how fortunate we are to attend a school like Belen. This trip I will never forget.”

Belen’s domestic and international programs make their mark on the future leaders of our community. Through education, experience, and service, the students witness the power of hard work, compassion, and model “Men for Others.”

Del Ecos de Belén 1955: El equipo de Volley Ball que abandona este año el Colegio deja tras sí el record magnífico de haber terminado tres años consecutivos campeones invictos. Los dos Pérez Majul y Noda formaban el central de nuestra combinación. El juego inteligente de Felito le valió el Oscar del atleta más distinguido en Volley Ball. Perico, también All Star, boleó como siempre, remató como nunca y con sus saques dió muchos tantos al equipo...Noda “asesinó” a sus bloqueadores...Fermín fué también All Star...Reyes y P. Fuentes completaron el sexto regular. Actuaron también con eficacia entre otros Duarte, Enrique Sosa, y Ramón María.

Dr. Marcelo Alonso ‘37

A graduate of Belen of 1937. Attended the University of Havana, where he graduated in Physical and Mathematical Sciences in 1941. Shortly after, he received a fellowship from the Institute for International Education to study in Yale University in 1943. In 1950 he became Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Havana. While in Cuba, he also held the positions of Director of the Cuban Atomic Energy Commission and Technical Advisor to BANDES. In 1960 he left Cuba and taught at the University of Georgetown of the Jesuit Fathers in Washington, D.C. Later on he became Director of Science and Technology of the O.A.S. and Executive Secretary of the Interamerican Nuclear Energy Commission. In 1980 he accepted the position of Executive Director of FITRE(Florida Institute of Technology Research and Engineering, Inc.) in Melbourne,Florida, a position he held until 1986. Although still associated with FIT, he had started his own consulting firm (Technoconsult).

He specialized in atomic and nuclear physics, and in particular in nuclear power, including the technical and political aspects. Doctor Alonso published several books which have been translated into 10 different languages. His most recent publication (1985) was “THE NUCLEAR CONNECTION”,which he coauthored. He also had 2 new books in preparation of which he is the editor.

He traveled extensively all over the world lecturing, consulting and attending conferences. One of his most recent trips was to the Soviet Union, shortly after Chernobyls, as a member of the Planning Committee of the International Scientific Energy Forum. He was also advisor on Science and Technology of AULA(Association Pro Unidad Latino-America), which is organized by past presidents of Latin American countries to discuss current issues in the region. Doctor Alonso married to Esther who died a few years ago, has four daughters and eight grand children. He resided in Melbourne Beach, Florida.

Nuestra Brigada de Asalto 2506 invoca Tu nombre como lo hicimos en el fragor de la Batalla, en nuestras prisiones y por nuestros heroicos muertos para rogar por Tu fuerza y protección en continuar nuestra lucha con el mismo tesón e ideales de siempre.

Padre Todopoderoso te rogamos por aquellos que dieron el sacrificio máximo por la Libertad de Cuba.

Te rogamos nos ayudes para que nunca perdamos nuestra responsabilidad cívica como Cubanos. Que ante todo el bien de nuestra Patria siempre nos llame.

Te rogamos también por todos los que aún viven con dolor sufriendo en nuestra Cuba esclavizada, ellos necesitan de Tu protección y nuestro soporte.
