President of the School

In the book of the Prophet Isaiah there is a beautiful image. The Lord says, “The heavens are my throne, the earth, my footstool” (66:1). It is followed by a question, “What house can you build for me?” The context is worth explaining. The people of Israel had been exiled in Babylon and are now returning to Jerusalem. The biggest concern is the rebuilding of the holy temple and the difference between true and false worship. The prophet wants to make sure, in the midst of the planning, that the people are focused on remaining faithful to God and keeping Him and not simply a building their priority.

Since the chosen people were forced away from the sacred Temple of Jerusalem, the center of holy worship, for such a long time, their desire for the new space was valid. But the prophet encourages them to be steadfast and faithful. Being uprooted from their homeland is not

grounds for uprooting the religious values and precepts rooted in their hearts. It is clearly the reason the Lord reveals, “This is the one whom I approve: the afflicted one, crushed in spirit, who trembles at my word” (v.2b).

Sixty years ago, like the people of Israel, Belen Jesuit was violently uprooted from its homeland and forced into exile. No one knew exactly what the future entailed, but one thing was absolutely clear, the Jesuits had to remain steadfast and faithful. Just as clear was their conviction that the doors of Belen would have to reopen again. And so, they did. Since then, we have continued to build on the success of those who came before us.

While there are many reasons to look back on this 60th anniversary year in Miami with great appreciation and pride, it is clearly the dedication of the new Our Lady of Belen Chapel that tops the bill. It was not simply the end of three years of great anticipation for the completion of construction, it was the end of sixty years of roaming South Florida without a sacred space worthy of such a rich tradition and history. This chapel was long overdue, but it came in due time.

As we approach the conclusion of this Ignatian Year that has celebrated the 500-year anniversary of the conversion of St. Ignatius of Loyola, we express great gratitude for so many great accomplishments that have accompanied it. The creation of the new Belen Hall of Fame and induction of its first 20 members, the groundbreaking of the new Robert Surís Athletic Facility, the most successful and well attended Tombola in the event’s history, and the close of the For the Greater Glory Campaign, are but a few of the highlights that have enriched this academic year.

Now, it is time to look at the future. In August, we will be revealing our new strategic plan, the blueprint for our future, the roadmap that will lead to our continued success. Do not be surprised when you read that first and foremost, just like in the last, the strengthening of our Catholic-Jesuit identity is our continued priority.

The Most Rev. Enrique Delgado, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese Miami was the main celebrant at the Confirmation Mass held on February 12. Several students were also fully initiated into the Catholic Church (receiving the three sacraments of Christian initiation, Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist).

The class of 2024 enjoyed a special day with their moms on February 26. The annual Belen tradition and grade-level activity, Mother and Son Day, is a day of bonding, laughter, and making memories.

ATHLETICSNEWS

Soccer State: The team won the district and regional championships and then defended their title as 5A State Champions after defeating J. R. Arnold High School 1 to 0! They were also named Academic State Champions for the second consecutive year and finished their season with a record of 19-5-1. First team All-Dade: Stefano Naos, Alejandro Vela, Matias Perinot, and Alejandro Pereyra.

Varsity Lacrosse:: The team won the district championship and finished the season with a record of 12-5. Zachary Acosta was selected to the USA Lacrosse Academic All-American Team. First Team All-Dade: Israel Salabarría, Juan Miró-Quesada, Aidan Hevia and Andrew

Baseball: The team won the district championship and finished its season with a record of 19-8. They also finished in second place at the South Florida Catholic Tournament. First Team All-Dade: Marc Fuentes and Nicholas Alonso.

Varsity Track & Field: The team won the district and regional championships and finished in fourth place at the State Finals. Adam Magoulas won the State Championship in the 1600 M. New School Records: Nicolas Souto-Pole Vault (15-1), Kevin Alpizar-Javelin (168-11), Joseph “Tiago” Socarrás800 M (1:53.73), 4x200 M (1:30.92) with Nicholas Díaz, Jancent Wallace, Diego León-Aguilar and Jorge Mesa, and 4x1600 M (17:57.30) with Evan Torres, Joseph “Tiago” Socarras, Julian Rodríguez and Joshua Ruíz.

Volleyball: The team won the district championship and finished the season with a record of 23-7. First Team All-Dade: Gabriel Suárez.

Varsity Basketball: The team won their first district championship in 17 years and ended their season as Regional Semifinalists. They finished with a record of 19-7, ranked seven in Miami-Dade County, and second place in the Vince Fernández Christmas Classic. Second Team All-Dade: Javier Rosell.

Varsity Water Polo: The team won the district and regional championships and then went on to complete an undefeated season (20-0) by winning the State Championship at the Gian Zumpano Aquatic Center. First Team All-County: Carlos Veccio. Dylan Veccio, Bryan Weglarz, Zachary Callejas and Daniel de Lamar.

Varsity Wrestling: The team won the Duals and IBT district championships. It was the first IBT championship in 15 years! They finished their season with a record of 18-8. Individual District Champions Daniel Cuesta (132 Lbs.) and José Romano (182 Lbs.). State qualifier: Darian Torres (160 Lbs.).

Varsity Crew: FSRA Sculling State Championship - Individual Champs (Lightweight 1x, Lightweight 2x, Lightweight 4x, Freshmen 4x, JV 4x, Varsity 4x); FSRA Sweeping State ChampionshipIndividual Champs (Freshmen 8+, Lightweight 8+, Varsity 4+, 2nd Freshmen 8+). At the SRAA National Championship, the team brought home 3 gold and 1 bronze medal.

On June 1st, the Belen Jesuit administration, members of the faculty, coaches, staff, and students gathered alongside the Surís family and The Estate Companies for the groundbreaking and blessing of the Roberto Surís Athletic Center.

“I’m very excited about this building,” said Fr. Willie, S.J., ‘87. “I’m excited about everything that’s going to happen here! I want to thank Roberto Surís ‘79 for his generosity and Carlos A. Penín ‘73, Ben Fernández ‘82, Tony Franyie, Jr. ‘86, José González ‘91, Manuel Portuondo ‘85 and many others for helping us get this project off the ground. We are eternally grateful to each of you. We have arrived at this moment because God has brought us here and we are tasked with forming well-rounded men of CatholicChristian values on and off the court and we will continue to do that in this new building.”

The three-story, nearly 60,000 square foot building will feature two workout rooms, a gym, two dozen treadmills, ERG Machines, golf simulators, and much more!

“This is a very important part of my life to be able to do this for Belen,” said Surís. “It took tremendous sacrifice for my parents to send me to Belen. In the beginning, the school faced difficulties like struggling to pay their staff and poor facilities, but what was always present was the Chrisitan upbringing, a tremendous education, and loving staff. That has always influenced me and all of us, alumni, in a positive way. What we propose to do here will take Belen to another level and will be comparable to facilities at the university level. This facility has been designed with the input of Coach Carlos Barquín and the other coaches and we hope that the students will take advantage of everything this facility will offer and excel.”

A C e l e b r a t i o n i n t h e C h a p e l o C

Belen Jesuit has been a part of our families’ lives for over two decades. Both of our sons and our son-in-law attended the school from 2003 to 2016. At this point, our family can barely remember what life was like before Belen entered our lives.

May 1, 2022, marked a particularly momentous occasion for the Belen community. Our Lady of Belen Chapel was consecrated. The vision of a chapel like this has been in the making for decades. We knew when our daughter Victoria and David ’12 planned their wedding for January of 2022, getting married in Our Lady of Belen Chapel was not possible because of its anticipated completion date Summer of 2022, but there was still hope for our older son Peter John ’10 and his fiancée, Addison, who had planned the wedding day to be May 14, 2022. While attending Wake Forest University in Winston, Salem, they met as undergraduate students. After 6 years of courtship. Addison knew every Belen story (I’m sure being told multiple times), got to know a lot of Belen faculty through stories almost personally, and became close to Peter John’s Belen friends since the sixth grade. Upon them getting engaged, there was never a doubt that they wanted to get married in the Our Lady of Belen Chapel.

What makes it even more special for us is that our family was able to take part in the first marriage ceremony at Our Lady of Belen Chapel. Earlier this year, our daughter, Victoria married David Barquin ’12, another Belen graduate. Their ceremony was performed by Father Willie and was also very special because it took place at St. Hugh Catholic Church which is where we as a husband and wife had our marriage ceremony in 1986, as well as David’s parents in 1987 and his sister and brother-in-law in 2018.

Everything came full circle on May 14, 2022. Our son, Peter John Jimenez ’10 married Addison Sutton. Alongside him, was our other son Gabriel Jimenez ’16 as the best man, and David Barquin ’12 our son-in-law was one of the groomsmen. Our family has now officially grown to include not only our children but also the Barquin family and the Sutton family as well. It has grown from Florida to North Carolina where the Belen community has now welcomed a new family. Countless times we have told others that what truly made our two sons and David the men they are today are the lessons they learned at Belen Jesuit. Not many parents are as fortunate to have men who become so grounded in their faith and morality at such a young age.

To be able to share this occasion with so many loved ones in a place that means so much to our family was truly unbelievable. While our family has been so fortunate to give back to Belen, a moment like this is what we long for so many other Belen families to experience. Our Lady of Belen Chapel is a place that will create memories in all stages of life in the Belen community for years to come. We still have one more son to marry, and hopefully many grandchildren whom we hope to christen, have first communions, attend school masses, and overall continue growing and making Belen such an integral part of our families’ lives.

Our Lady of Belen Chapel DEDICATION

For close to 60 years, Belen Jesuit Preparatory School has yearned for a sacred space dedicated to serving the number of students at the school. After three years of construction, the Our Lady of Belen Chapel was dedicated in a special Mass celebrated by The Most. Rev. Thomas Wenski, Archbishop of Miami on May 1, 2022.

“In consecrating this altar, we set aside a work made by human hands for a sacred purpose, said the archbishop during the homily at the Mass of dedication. “I will anoint the altar with the same Chrism with which we were anointed at our baptisms and confirmations – for as members of Christ’s Body we too have been set aside for a sacred purpose. That purpose is alluded to in your school motto: “men for others.”

“Also, in a solemn way, the altar will be enveloped by the smoke of the incense,” continued the archbishop. “The sweet smell of the incense permeates this entire building, reminding us that here God dwells with his people. And as smokes drift heavenward, so will the fervent prayers prayed here by students, faculty and their parents also rise to God.”

In addition to the archbishop, the Mass included Fr. Martin Lenk, S.J., Provincial of the Antilles Province, Fr. Alberto García, S.J., Superior of the Jesuits in Miami, Fr. Guillermo M. García-Tuñón, S.J., ’87, President, priests, deacons, and invited guests. Several special rituals for the formal dedication of the chapel took place, including the presentation of the key, the blessing of the altar, walls, and the deposition of the relic of St. Ignatius of Loyola into the altar.

The Dedication of the Our Lady of Belen Chapel was filled with poignant moments. When Archbishop Wenski entered the chapel, Fr. Willie, S.J., ‘87 met him at the door with the vow cross that belonged to Fr. Jorge Sardiña, S.J. ‘45 (it also had attached his Agrupación medal) which he kissed. Then, a ceremonial key was presented on behalf of the

builder to the archbishop who in turn gave it to Fr. Willie, S.J., ‘87. Next, during the procession, Deacons Flores, Prieto ‘70, and Lee filled three aspergillums with holy water from the baptismal font that was used in the Mass.

“Belen’s commitment to our Catholic identity is now unmistakable to anyone who drives by our school,” said Fr. Willie, S.J., ‘87. “The Our Lady of Belen Chapel is a clear expression of the promise made to every parent of the school that we are a Catholic, Jesuit school above all else. We strive for our students to become good Catholic-Jesuit men of faith who will actively contribute to the community. As such, it is without a doubt that the most significant construction project in Belen’s history in Miami is the Our Lady of Belen Chapel.”

The over 14-thousand square foot chapel, located on the southeast corner of the school, seats 638. The chapel is designed by Belen alumnus from the class of 1974, architect Jorge Hernández ‘74.

“Since Fidel Castro stole Belen’s monumental campus in Havana, sixty years ago, the school in Miami has thrived under the guidance of the Holy Spirit,” said Hernández ‘74. “By that Grace, our school has now completed a chapel of appropriate scale and stature for worship. That I would be asked to design the Our Lady of Belen Chapel is an honor and the most humbling experience of my life, for that I will be forever grateful.”

Inside the nave are 10 side niches (five on each side) that feature paintings representing Jesuits from the Americas (5 from North America and 5 from Latin America) by Spanish artist Raúl Berzosa. In addition to the portraits, the chapel also includes specially commissioned artwork in the form of the ambo, altar, and baptismal font. There is an image of Saint Ignatius of Loyola as one approaches the altar on the right, and

an image of Saint Francis Xavier as one approaches the altar on the left, representing two of the founders of the Society of Jesus.

“Everything, including the design of the chapel, has a theological message in mind,” said Fr. Willie, S.J., ‘87. “Upon entering the chapel, guests will be able to look up and see a statue of Our Lady of Belen sitting on a pillar and greeting all who enter.”

“The foundation of the design for the chapel is based on the principles of harmonic proportion,” said Hernández ‘74. “Quite simply, these are ratios that create harmonies in music and in the visual arts. The spiritual senses of sight and sound are married to stimulate both intellect and spirit. For us Catholics, this has a special meaning because these harmonies, expressed in mathematical terms, hold the very key to the beauty found in nature, due to God’s hand in Creation.”

Immense detail and thought were given to every inch of the chapel.

“The nave of the Our Lady of Belen Chapel is proportioned as a golden rectangle; a ratio which produces an irrational number, approximately 6:10 which is infinitely divisible and likewise derived from ideal human proportions, and therefore jointly represents God and Man,” said Hernández ‘74. “The canvases of the side niches painted by Raúl Berzosa are proportioned as a 1:2 ratio – an octave. When plucked, string lengths of 1:2 produce the octave - which is visually a double square. The choir sounds beautiful because the reverberation of the voice and the proportions of the interior space are interlocked by the employment of a system of harmonies - both visible and audible - to stimulate us to prayerfully approach the beauty of God. There are multiple other theological meanings developed in the chapel but this one is the most architectural in nature.”

The chapel is Belen Jesuit’s most ambitious project to date, costing approximately $10 million to complete and was paid for entirely by the generosity of many benefactors.

“So many people worked incredibly hard to build this chapel, and we definitely needed the financial support of the Belen community for it to come to fruition,” said Fr. Willie, S.J., ‘87. “The generosity of many is what made this chapel go from a dream to a reality. I’m incredibly grateful to every single person who gave their time, talent, and treasure. Very specifically I want to thank Jorge Hernández who designed and oversaw this beautiful building and the team at Lemartec who worked tirelessly to complete the build.”

“There must be hundreds of men and women who

worked on-site and off-site around the world in artisan shops, warehouses, factories… making the art, parts, and pieces of our Chapel,” said Hernández ‘74. “We all worked under the unfailing guidance of Fr. Guillermo García-Tuñón, S.J. ‘87, and threw him under the Great Architect of all things not made by human hands.”

The Belen community is invited to celebrate the Mass on the Feast of Saint Ignatius of Loyola on Sunday, July 31st at 10 a.m. in the Our Lady of Belen Chapel. The Mass will be presided by Archbishop Thomas Wenski who will bless the pipe organ, celebrate the closing of the Ignatian jubilee year, recognize our six jubilarians, and conclude the 60th-anniversary celebration of Belen in Miami.

Q. What was your experience like at Belen Jesuit Preparatory school?

A. I would say the best word to use is lifesaving. We moved to Miami in 1959 at the start of the Cuban revolution. That time was nuts to say the least. I attended Belen from 1969 to 1974. The city of Miami was going through tough times back then and there was a lot of talk from fellow Cubans about going back to Cuba and taking back the country from the communist regime. Belen was my family during that tumultuous time.

Q. Family is a recurring theme at Belen. Can you expand?

A. My life could have gone in a totally different direction but thankfully I had some great Jesuit priests who helped shape me. Those priests were tough. I’m thankful that they were looking out for me because I could have chosen a dissolute direction. They were my family because without their guidance I would have been lost.

Q. What type of student were you?

A. In all honesty, there were 29 kids in my class and I was number 28. I wasn’t the smartest student in the class but I was able to attend the University of Miami. Then while at UM, I felt very proud to be in college! I believe I learned a lot of other attributes from my Belen family that weren’t reflected on my report card.

Q. Tell us about your experience as a Boy Scout.

A. Being a Boy Scout at Belen was a huge part of my life and becoming an Eagle Scout was incredible. I was the youngest Eagle Scout in our Troop at the age of 13 (Eagle Scouts as you know is the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America). My Boy Scout mentor was a huge influence in my life and he deserves all my gratitude for always keeping me on track, and looking out for all of us young guys in our troop. Those experiences helped mold my future.

Q. What’s one of the most memorable moments from when you were a Belen student?

A. Volunteering at Tombola was a great experience for me. I looked forward to helping out as much as I could in any capacity.

Q. Whom would you say made a large impact in your life?

A. Two Jesuit priests, Father Tey, the head of the Boy Scouts at the time and Fr. Baldor, who was the head of the school, made a large impact in my life. Fr. Baldor was a tough disciplinarian and he would crack down on me pretty hard, but I believe he did that because he took a sincere interest in me and my education.

Q. What do you hold most dear?

A. I hold my family most dear. I have two boys and two granddaughters. I’ve also lived in many places and have developed an extended family that for me has been instrumental in getting me to where I am today.

Q. How has your Jesuit education specifically shaped you and helped you in your life?

A. I think everybody that I’ve come across in business respects a Jesuit education. I think the quality of education is second to none. I have friends from different places who did not grow up in Miami but are Jesuit educated and I can tell they’re different; they’re very well prepared.

Q. Can you definitely say that to be great at a career, you have to have a driving passion for it?

A. Oh, man, I think so. I also think you’ve got to really understand that you’re making a difference in people’s lives because if you’re just doing something and don’t see the benefit to the people in society, then at least for me I’m not wired to be able to do that. Making money is not what sustains me. What does is knowing that we’ve got some great people who work with us in our business. We’ve got some great customers that we take care of every single day and we work our butts off to give them a great experience.

Q. What advice would you have to students interested in pursuing a career like yours?

A. Connect with the Belen alumni network because I’m sure there are a lot of people in the real estate industry. I got my first job in Chicago because of a Belen connection and honestly, that was my biggest career move. Because of that job, I made tremendous connections in real estate investment banking that hold true to this day.

Introduced in 2018 by Student Council President, Felipe Pardo ‘18 and Mr. Antonio Castro ‘86 (President of the Alumni Association 2016 - 2020), the Beyond Belen Program was initiated to pair current seniors with alumni, as mentors, whose profession lies within the students’ desired career path. Since then, the program has taken a leap in both participation from students and alumni alike. Additionally, two layers have been added to the program. Now, junior students have been invited to participate and an emphasis is being placed on understanding that Beyond Belen is a professional networking opportunity.

“The professional networking aspect is incredibly important for these young men. They not only need to hear the phrase often, they also need to experience and embrace it,” said Claudia Basso, Career Development Coordinator and now responsible for the Beyond Belen Program. “Most of these students have never had the opportunity to speak with a stranger about their educational or career goals and Beyond Belen takes them there, completely out of their comfort zone.”

In the past, students were told about the importance of the program and how they needed to become involved, but they were not thoroughly educated on how to ask engaging questions and understand the value of leaving a first good impression. For the last four years, Beyond Belen has created a positive impact on the school’s campus. This year, we had the largest number of participants, 75 students were paired with 52 alumni mentors.

“Not only did I have the opportunity to get to know my mentor on a professional level, but I was also able to ask him questions regarding his career and the path he took to get there,” stated Carlos Perez-Abreu ‘22.

The behind-the-scenes coordination of the pairing process is extraordinary. The team, this year, which was spearheaded by Claudia Basso included Carlos Bravo ‘86 and Carlos Jimenez ‘15 (Alumni Office), Matthew Jordan ‘08 (Dean of Student Activities), Carlos Perez-Abreu ‘22, and Kevin Garcia ‘23 (Chairpersons for their respective classes). They engaged in several meetings prior to the event to make certain that students and mentors were not only paired according to their career interests and fields but paired by personality and character traits. “This aspect of the pairing

process goes almost unnoticed but is essential to the development of the student-alumnus relationship,” mentioned Kevin Garcia ‘23.

“Through the Beyond Belen program, I was personally paired with Raul Duarte ‘09, a small business owner who shares my interests and goals. After getting to know one another, we discussed universities, careers, and his experience as an entrepreneur. He then invited me to visit his office and further our professional relationship. His experience has helped direct my aspirations and understand how I can tailor my career to the latter,” explained Tomas Duque ‘22.

From this program, mentors leave their doors open to mentees throughout their college years and the opportunity to contact them when they are ready to take on a summer internship. Beyond Belen is a testament to the Belen brotherhood and will continue to enhance that culture.

“Beyond Belen - what a unique experience! I had a fascinating conversation with Mr. Loret de Mola ‘11 about real estate construction and development. Our conversation was interesting, enlightening, but most importantly, motivating. The knowledge he was able to share with me gave me a greater understanding of something I am truly passionate about,” stated Marco de la Hoz ‘23.

The 2022-2023 Beyond Belen, Networking and Mentoring Program, will take place in December 2022. Alumni from 1976 to 2013 will be receiving an

Dear Belen Alumni,

As we close our 60th year of educating “Men for Others” in Miami, Florida, I am beyond proud of what we have accomplished as part of the ever-expanding Alumni Association of Belen Jesuit Preparatory School. One only needs to drive onto our school campus and be greeted by Our Lady of Belen Chapel to witness the glory of God in action.

As your Alumni Director, I have the privilege of connecting with you throughout the year to share the magnificent accomplishments of our fellow Wolverines; accomplishments that become all of our collective successes. Now as we look toward 2023, we are preparing for the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Asociación de los Antiguos Alumnos del Colegio de Belén, our Alumni Association. On January 31st, 1923 in Havana, Cuba, 930 alumni enrolled and started the association. Today, we have over 8,000 members all over the world. Thanks to

the alumni association, we have been able to maintain and grow our brotherhood and support our alma mater throughout its growth, offer career guidance, networking opportunities, community outreach and so much more.

This academic year, we were able to go back to in-person events and even start new traditions like the Belen Hall of Fame. Our inaugural class included 20 people who helped shape the school into what it is today. Earlier in the year, we also kicked off homecoming week with a very special commemorative event honoring fellow alumnus and (life of every party), Rick Raimúndez ’90, with the Rick Raimúndez Homecoming Tailgate. In January, we held our Beyond Belen alumni mentorship program, where alumni are paired-up with juniors and seniors, to guide them along their chosen career paths. We also continued our Alumni Tours which allows us to check in on alumni throughout the country. The 23rd annual Father Izquierdo Golf Tournament found a new home at La Gorce Country Club, with over 130 golfers participating to raise funds for the Belen Financial Assistance Program.

To finish off the school year, we gathered for our 2nd Annual Grand Reunion where over five hundred alums gathered on the first Sunday in June to reconnect with friends, tour the campus, relive the glory days and celebrate a beautiful Mass for alumni and their families in our newly dedicated, Our Lady of Belen Chapel.

Finally, we look forward to another academic year full of new memories and opportunities to gather together. For example, on September 9, 2022, we will head to Fairfield Prep in Connecticut to kick off our football season with an exhibition game bringing a taste of our South Florida culture and flair to what will surely be an unforgettable tailgate. Also, that same weekend the Alumni Tour will be making a stop in Boston. Other stops will be announced in the fall.

Undoubtedly, the brotherhood remains stronger than ever, and there is much to look forward to in the coming year from our Alumni Association. I look forward to seeing you at future events. For now, enjoy your summer and Ad Majorem dei Gloriam.
