Chapter 1:Silent Admiration

The campus was filled with excitement as students ran between classes the cold autumn air conveying the scent of new leaves and moist dirt. Joseph sat on the seat, pretending to be engaged in his literature but actually staring at her. Emma was standing across the lawn, giggling at whatever one ofher friends had said. Her laughing was a bright spot in an otherwise average afternoon, a sound Joseph had come to appreciatefrom a distance.

Joseph knew Emma since his first year of college, but they had only ever interacted casually. She was the sort of girl who lighted up any space she entered her kindness was captivating. But beyond the laughter and the easy blush, Joseph detected somethingdarker:Arthur.

Arthur was Emma's lover, a tall, athletic man who was constantly the focus of a raction. On the outside, he appeared like the ideal choice for Emma confident, lovely, and clearly in love with her. But Joseph had noticed the fractures, when Arthur's influence on Emma has tightened in modest but sinister ways.

Joseph shut the book with a gasp, understanding nothing would change. He was inaccessible to Emma, and if he wasn't, what could he possibly do? She had fallen in love with someone else, and despite everything, she couldn't seem to let go.

Chapter 2:TheWeight ofWatching

Joseph's days blended together, packed with seminars, temporary employment at the college bookstore, and the constant reminder of Emma in his mind. He frequently discovered himself in similar places with her, whether by chance or fate. He couldn't respond. They had a few classes together and would occasionally exchange a grin or a quick conversation about coursework.

But Joseph witnessed greater than he had intended to. Arthur's jealousy was evident, regardless of whether it was not expressed. He'd seen Arthur get Emma away from chats with other males, his hand gripping her arm just too tightly. And it wasn't just the physical gestures Emma's laugh seemed less free, and she appeared to shrink when Arthur was upset.

Joseph stood next from her at the student cafe one afternoon. Emma was independently sipping the espresso and looking at the view, her phone clasped tightly in her palm. Joseph could sense the tightness in her physique and the fear on her face. Arthur had most likely sent her another of his cu ing texts, this time regarding where she'd been or who she was meeting.

Joseph's heart ached. He was hoping to walk with her and tell her she didn't deserve this; she earned to be cherished unconditionally. However, he remained wherever he was, feeling the weight of his wordless emotions weighing down on him.

Chapter 3:Fractured

After an exhausting session oflectures Joseph wandered near the dormitories and got lost in meditation. He was going toward turning around when he heard a yell. Arthur's voice was sharp and aggressive. Joseph's stomach constricted when herecognized whom Arthur was yellingat.

"Emma, I am serious! "Why do you always make things so difficult?" Arthur's words boomed across thebuildings.

Joseph's feet shifted before he would react. He turned around and saw them: Emma stood with her back turned against the concrete walls, her arms folded on the defensive end, and Arthur loomed over her,his facedistorted with wrath.

"Emma?" Joseph spokeout beforehecould control himself.

They both twisted and stared at him. Emma's eyes widened in surprise, and Arthur's facedarkened further.

"This doesn't bother you,man, " Arthur hissed.

Joseph's hands tightened into fists. "It does if you ' re treating her likethis."

Emma spoke softly, almost imploring. "Please, Joseph. It's okay."Just...go."

Her words were like a punch in the gut, but Joseph knew she was not u ering them because she meant them. She was sayingit sinceshefelt trapped.

"Just consider of what you deserve, Emma," Joseph murmured calmly, turning to walk away. He was doubting himself to remain there, especially with Arthur gazing at him.

Chapter 4:Confession

The days following the conflict were filled with stillness. Emma ignored Joseph, but he could not blame her. Despite his good intentions, he ended up crossing a line. He had rendered her situation much moreconfusing.

But, one evening, when he headed out ofthe reading room, he noticed her. Emma sat on a bench, knees tucked up to her chest and facecovered behind her hands.

Joseph rushed her without thinkingabout it.

"Emma," hewhispered softly,se lingdown besideher.

She glanced up, and her pupils were bright red and wrinkled from tears."Joseph… "I'm not surewhat to do."

Her tone was so tiny and broken that it destroyed Joseph's last ounceofcontrol.Hecouldn't hold backany longer.

"I'm in love with you, " he said, his voice shaking with the burden of the revelation. "I've been doing this for long periods of time. And I know it won't alter anything, but I can't keep lyingthat I'm not feelingthis way " .

Emma looked at him, her countenance a mix of amazement and uncertainty. She wiped her eyes as her fingers trembled. "Joseph,I..." Ididn't know.

"I'm not revealing you this in order to make things harder," Joseph said, his heart thumping. "I just..." I had to let you to be aware of. You deserve so considerably more than Arthur provides you."You deserveto behappy."

Emma's lips quiver as she a empted to find the appropriate words."Iam not sureifImay leavehim."

Joseph nodded as his chest tightened. He was prepared for that response. "I understand. But I will be here, Emma. Whatever you require, when you'll requireit."

Emma snuggled against him, her whole body shuddering with quiet tears. Joseph placed his arms around her, hugging her closer, even though he knew it was the closest he'd ever cometo possessingher.

Chapter 5:Distance

After that night, everything within Joseph and Emma changed. They didn't discuss the revelation again, and Emma remained with Arthur. Joseph a empted to be supportive of her, but he wasn't sure if she was pulling away out of regret or fear.

Weeks went on, and Emma became increasingly distant. Joseph saw li le of what she did on campus as well, and when he did so, she remained along with Arthur, her grin untrueand her laughter lifeless.

It hurt beyond what Joseph had expected. He had hoped that revealing his feelings would give him some closure, but instead it caused a scar that declined to heal. He was unable to stop thinking over her and wondering what else he could do.

But he understood that Emma had to arrive at her own decisions. Despite his best efforts, he couldn't save her from Arthur.

Chapter 6:Unspoken Farewell

Joseph last saw Emma on a pleasant afternoon at the library. She was seated at one among the seats, staring mindlessly at a textbook. Arthur was unable to be noticed, and Joseph pondered approaching her and asking whether she was all right.

But a factor stopped him. Maybe it was the feeling of resignation on her face, or the realization that his presence would not change anything. Emma continued to be with Arthur, and Joseph had to realizethat it wasn't his choice.

He moved away, leaving her alone with her feelings, his heart burdened with the brunt of all he hoped he might convey but never might.

Epilogue:

Joseph will never forget Emma not only because he loved her, yet he was saddened by the distance between them. She had been the girl who grabbed his heart but was too broken to keep it. He wasn't sure if she'd ever leave Arthur, nevertheless he hoped that one day she'd have the courage to pickherself.

For the time being, Joseph had to continue forward, carrying her memories with him as a painful memory of what may havebeen.
