EDUCATION, THE BEST VACCINE OF ALL This year has been difficult for everyone, and the latest government announcements predict no major improvement until the second half of 2021. The Covid-19 pandemic has changed many things and huge investment has been put into developing a vaccine that will enable protection against the virus. For our students the lockdown made big differences to the college experience. We had to quickly introduce remote learning and almost all exams were cancelled and assessments modified or delayed. Despite this our students continued to perform at the highest levels and we say our best ever results overall, and many of those we are honouring tonight also won national and international competitions, or places at our top Universities. We know that the Covid-19 pandemic will eventually end, but the skills and knowledge our students gain are far more enduring. Education remains the best way to protect yourself against all the misfortunes that modern life can bring. Research shows clearly that the higher the level of your education or skill the more you earn, the better your health, the longer you live and the happier you remain. It is a message all of our students have taken on board.

Tonight, is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the College and its 16,000 outstanding students. It is also very important we recognise achievement is a team effort. The ceremony is a celebration of parents, family and friends who support our students; a celebration of our staff for their role, a celebration of employers and community organisations who help shape our courses and help students with the next phase of their lives. The Bedford College Group can only thrive if our communities are supportive and ambitious, and we are blessed to be able to operate within such a positive patch. A COLLEGE FOR THE FUTURE The five colleges of The Bedford College Group (Bedford College, Tresham College, Shuttleworth College, The Bedford Sixth Form and the National College for Motorsport) can trace their collective histories back over 130 years, and it says a great deal about the severity of the Covid-19 lockdown that it led to the closure of buildings whose previous counterparts had remained open during two world wars, the Spanish Flu epidemic, the great recession of the 1930s, and the recent years of austerity. After starting so well with a highly successful Ofsted visit, the academic year 2019-20 truly turned out to be the most extraordinary year that most of us can remember. However, the pandemic has brought us an indirect benefit in highlighting that technical education is vital to re-establishing economic growth post-Covid, thereby reinforcing our commitment to the communities of Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire to provide high quality learning, a curriculum to help people and employers achieve their ambitions, and teaching that stretches our students to go further than many of them initially thought possible. As the largest regional provider of further education, we have an increasingly crucial role in providing the skills to support the new infrastructure the country needs â€“ homes, transport links, schools and hospitals â€“ and also in helping develop the personal qualities of those who care for our society which in the next few years will be needed more than ever.

Despite Covid-19 our development continues. In September we opened our new Wellingborough campus, a project illustrating the way colleges, councils and government agencies can work together to create new opportunities. Additional capital funding will create a new construction centre in Bedford (focusing on off-site construction methods), an English & maths centre that will use artificial intelligence to provide personalised tuition, and improve existing College buildings. The Government has also provided money for catch-up tuition for the more disadvantaged in our community. Some of this funding has been facilitated by our excellent record of financial management. Of course, these projects do not in themselves create success, though they are an important part in our continued growth. So, after such a challenging year, on behalf of the Corporation (the governing body) I should like to congratulate all our students for producing such outstanding results, and to thank our excellent staff for their commitment and professionalism in dealing with such unusual circumstances.

IN MEMORIUM ELIZABETH NASH For most of the last two decades Elizabeth hosted our Achievements Ceremonies in Bedford and became something of a legend for her ability to ensure everyone had a very special evening. Her ability to get a full Corn Exchange applauding and laughing was exceptional as was her attention to detail when it came to the pronunciation of names. I can even recall one occasion when a young award winner came up to me afterwards in tears. She wanted me to know that it had been the most special night of her life because, not only had she won an award for the first time, but Elizabeth had been the first person outside her family to get her name right and she would never forget that. Sadly, Elizabeth fell ill shortly before she retired a few years ago. She continued to support our community including taking up the role of Vice Chair at our Academy Trust. However, her condition deteriorated suddenly at the start of this academic year, and she died in October after a short stay in a local hospice. Elizabeth worked at the College for over 30 years as a teacher, staff development manager and HR Director. Her contribution to the College and our community was immense. In 2009 she led our Shuttleworth Merger Group, helping to ensure the smooth integration of the two Colleges, and played a similar role during the merger with Tresham College in 2017. She also helped introduce the innovative creation of BCPS Ltd which is now one of the largest employers in the area. She will be remembered with great fondness by the generations of staff and students she worked with and helped.

COUNCIL HAND OVER £600K TO FUSION LIFESTYLE

FUSION MAKE LEISURE STAFF REDUNDANT

FOLLOWING the bail-out from Bedford Borough Council to re-open Robinson Pool, Fusion Lifestyle Ltd, the company that operates the Borough’s leisure facilities has given out redundancy notices to staff employed at the town’s other leisure centres.

The redundancy notices state that: “These centres will not re-open in the foreseeable future – the foreseeable future is clarified as six months.” Fusion had requested assistance from the Borough Mayor, Dave Hodgson, who agreed to pay Fusion £45,500 per month for the next six months to reopen Robinson Pool and for Mowsbury Golf Course which had already reopened earlier. Bedford’s Athletics stadium is open for club use but with limited facilities. Along with this financial help, the council have also agreed to defer the Fusion management fee of £7,342 per month for six months, and continuing to defer their loan repayments of

Fusion Lifestyle Ltd are a management company contracted to run the Borough’s leisure facilities; Kempston Pool, Oasis Beach Pool, Kempston Outdoor Centre, Robinson Pool, John Bunyan Leisure Centre and Bedford Athletics Stadium. £52,625 per month (which the council have already been doing since March). This will cost the Borough around £105k per month, (or £630k in total) just to get Robinson Pool open. The £45,500 per month is to be allocated to the council’s Covid-19 Impact Cost Centre. Cllr Sue Oliver said: “Labour Councillors are trying to get to the bottom of the issue with Fusion Lifestyle, who have performed poorly for some time. “We are disappointed with their lack of communication throughout this pandemic with both the Borough Council and residents, who are users of their facilities. I hope that the reopening of Robinson Pool has proved instructive to them on how to operate safely during the Covid 19 pandemic, and they will now prioritise the opening up of other Borough wide facilities.”

THE Competition and Markets Authority has allowed the £780m merger between Carlsberg and Marston’s.

A joint venture between Carlsberg UK, which has a brewery in Northampton, and Marston’s PLC to form the Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company has now been approved. In 2017 Marston’s came to an agreement to purchase the Charles Wells brewery in Queen’s Park, Bedford. This purchase also included a number of Charles Wells’ beer brands. Carlsberg CEO Cees’t Hart said: “The creation of the joint venture with Marstons is an important step forward for our UK business. “The joint venture’s brand portfolio will allow us to offer a significantly stronger beer portfolio to our UK customers, and at the same time extend distribution into the Marston’s pub estate. “In addition, the combined business will bring our customers wider choice, greater capacity, product innovation, and marketing and distribution efficiency benefits.”

STUDENT PARTICIPATION AWARD STUDENT PARTICIPATION AWARD

WILL GERRARD Will is currently studying for the Photography HNC at Tresham College, having fallen in love with photography while at secondary school. Will also studied Photography at Level 3 here at Tresham, and it was during this time that he was able to explore another passion of his by being elected a Student Governor. “I’m fascinated by government, so when I saw the opportunity to become a Student Governor at College, I went for it,” explains Will. “I’d been a Student Rep and then Student Voice Rep the year before, but I wanted to do more. Being a Student Governor has given me experience at Board level.” Will did indeed gain plenty of experience along the way, becoming well-known among his student peers as someone they could go to to have their views heard and offer their ideas on how to improve the student experience. “I gained so much more confidence by speaking regularly to people about the important things that impact them, and it was nice to be able to offer assistance. I’d attend regular meetings to give feedback to staff, especially in the field of equality and diversity.”

Student input like Will’s lead to The Bedford College Group being awarded the Stonewall Silver School Champion Award last year; the result of their hard work and the involvement and commitment of lots of individuals from across the College. Will also had the opportunity to attend the National Student Conference at the NEC in Birmingham last year. “Student Governors from all over the country came and I spoke on behalf of our College about what we offer and how we can continue to improve.”

STUDENT PARTICIPATION AWARD

ANDREW SMITH Andrew studied the Outdoor Adventure Extended Diploma for two years at Shuttleworth College whilst living on site in student halls. It was while living in halls that he decided to join the Student Union and help to set up some clubs, so that he and his friends wouldn’t get bored in between lessons on site. “We set up a few clubs including basketball and dodgeball,” says Andrew. “I studied at another college before coming to Shuttleworth and I can say that student life here is so much more enhanced; there are so many ways to get involved.” And that’s thanks to students just like Andrew who get involved in all aspects of College life alongside their course. Without them taking the time to talk to other students and feeding back to staff, changes wouldn’t happen. It wasn’t long before Andrew was also invited to stand for Student Governor. “Being a Student Governor definitely helped to improve my communication skills,” says Andrew. “I now know how to look at the overall picture, at the College as a whole, and how change will affect everyone. I can then confidently speak up for the whole student community.”

Andrew also spoke on behalf of the College at the National Student Conference at the NEC in Birmingham last year. His passion and motivation will no doubt see him succeed in his goal to become a Sailing Instructor and to one day run his own sailing or outdoor adventure centre. “I couldn’t ask for better tutors and staff at the College,” says Andrew. “They’d run to the end of the earth for us and have fully supported us throughout our time there.”

STAFF AWARDS 2020 UNSUNG HERO AWARD (JOINT WINNERS)

IN MEMORIUM CHRIS BAMFORD Chris joined the College in 1994 and was most recently based at the Shuttleworth and Kempston sites as the IT Technician. Chris was the longest serving member of the IT Services team. He very sadly passed away from a heart attack earlier this year. Chris was a much loved and respected member of staff who will be sadly missed within the team. He has been described as “the epitome of an unsung hero”, “a legend”, who was a true professional in his work, kind, funny and always ready to go the extra mile. Outside of work Chris was also an expert in creating complex firework displays. He even travelled abroad to assist with shows and competitions, and his colleagues loved hearing his stories. In his day job nothing was too much trouble for Chris; he wouldn’t hesitate to help any member of staff in need of IT support and fully embraced moving technology forward (still, of course, with fond memories of when the College got its first computers complete with floppy discs!) The rural setting of Shuttleworth combined with its exciting new developments, meant Chris was often in high demand. However, without hesitation, he would always appear at the door when needed. Chris was

able to support all staff even when under immense pressure himself, and if he did not have the answer, he would find it for you. Here are just a few of the thoughts about Chris from his colleagues:

“Chris was quiet, kind and responsive to the many IT questions and requests that I pestered him with.” “I remember Chris helped me so many times when I first started at Shuttleworth; he always had a smile and time for a chat.” “I will miss our funny chats, his fireworks tales and his sense of humour.”

2020 PROFESSIONAL SERVICES STAFF OF THE YEAR AWARD

GEMMA CRANE Gemma’s self-motivation and desire to reach her goals has seen her go on a tremendous journey in just five short years at Bedford College. Having previously worked in hairdressing and retail, Gemma got a job in Student Data for a year and then moved to BROOKS as a Centre Administrator. However, she always knew she wanted to work in HR. “It’s that typical interview question,” says Gemma. “Where do you see yourself in five years’ time? For me, it was in HR and I actually managed it in only three!” Gemma studied for her Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications in Business Administration and then self-funded her HR Level 3 CIPD while she was still working as a Centre Administrator. When the role for Recruitment Coordinator came up, she went for it, got the job and has now been promoted to HR Advisor. “I’ve taken opportunities as and when they have come up,” explains Gemma. “I’m planning to study for the Level 5 qualification next year. There is so much to learn in this new role as HR Advisor. “This year has been tough with the Covid pandemic moving everything online. It’s been a real learning curve, but I’m the kind of person that just gets on

and does it. We’ve all had to adapt but I do miss the knowledge sharing in the office.” It was not only the in-house admin that had to move online, but also the entire external interview process. It was at this time that Gemma showed true commitment to the recruitment service and excellent customer service throughout. Gemma says she is grateful for all the opportunities the College has given her, but it’s also testament to her for seizing them at every step. “I can’t believe it’s been five years since I started; working here has made me the person I am today and I love building up relationships with colleagues.”

SHARON WARREN Sharon has been employed by The Bedford College Group since March 2003. In that time she’s taken on and embraced a variety of roles: Centre Administrator; Personal Assistant for the Principal, a maternity cover role; evening Receptionist that she took on alongside her day job; and Centre Administrator Team Leader, a role she has had since 2006. Sharon supports the Art & Design department, alongside the Performing Arts, Media & Music department two days a week, and is Line Manager to nine Centre Administrators across the College. There is no doubt Sharon is a true team player and people person who always takes time to make positive work relationships with colleagues. Sharon says: “It can feel like I spend a lot of time with my work colleagues, so it’s only right to display a genuine commitment towards them, and I’ve made some good friends along the way.”

Sharon has helped at numerous College events and especially loves the annual Achievements Ceremony. She is also part of the Staff Social Group and looks forward to helping arrange events for staff to enjoy with their family and friends.

2020 TEACHER OF THE YEAR AWARD

PHIL WELLS Philip has worked at Shuttleworth College for just over a decade. In that time he has achieved his teaching qualifications and gone on to become an outstanding teacher who is highly regarded by both staff and students. One member of staff said: “Philip is very knowledgeable in their subject area, has a great rapport with the students and always gives 100% to make sure they have the best experience.” Philip started in 2010 as an Equine Lecturer where he spent four happy years down at the Equine Centre while studying for his Certificate in Education (Cert Ed) qualification. Always one to keep challenging himself, Philip then moved over to the Animal Management team to pursue a course management role alongside teaching Level 3 Animal Science. Philip’s motivation has never waned and this year he took the lead in proactively moving all teaching and course administration online when the Covid-19 pandemic hit. Philip was quick to embrace the online teaching and support the students during lockdown; not just his own students, but also those students who were progressing from Level 2 to Level 3 or moving into their second year of the Level 3 programme.

Alongside all of this, Philip is part of various working groups to ensure teaching standards across College continue to rise. This has included participation in the IT online working group to help with the planning of next year’s teaching, as well as promoting the blended learning activities that the College is working towards next year. Philip says: “I love my job and would like to carry on progressing here at the College. I’m a glass-halffull kind of person and, although this year has been tougher than others, I’ve worked with the whole team to steer and support them, while of course helping the students get through too”.

OUTSTANDING STUDENT NOMINATIONS

LEWIS BAVISTER Lewis’ determination and passion for theatre and the arts has seen him work his way up from Level 2 to studying at the number one specialist arts university at Bournemouth. He initially took a qualification in Hair & Make-Up to enable him to get the place he wanted on the Level 3 Hair & Media Make-Up course. “I knew since middle school that I wanted to work in this industry and studying at College has helped me find a vision and a way to get there. I find make-up really exciting and a good way to express myself.” Lewis not only gained qualifications from College but some valuable contacts in the industry. In the second year of his qualification he took one of the top prizes in a tribute award to the late international fashion designer, Alexander McQueen. The competition was called Brush Wars held at Olympia Beauty in London. Lewis had to create a catwalk make-up design and took second place in the Fashion Make-up Student Category, ahead of around 20 other entrants nationwide. Judges commented on the skills demonstrated by Lewis and his creativity towards the brief. It was from this success that more doors opened for him; Lewis later worked with one of the Brush Wars judge’s make-up team at London Fashion Week, as well as on a TV charity show with celebrity guests.

“These were all amazing to do and I’m still in touch with this contact, working on photo shoots from time to time. “When I first started at College I didn’t want to go to university, but my tutors have been my inspiration and fuelled me to go as I know it will help in the long run.” Lewis’ goal is to work in the West End and would be “over the moon” to get to work on his favourite production, Wicked.

GEMMA TETLEY Gemma came to Tresham College after finishing school and studied the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design. It was here at Tresham that she really found her feet, grew in confidence and was able to take her love of art to the next level. “If I’m truthful I really didn’t enjoy school, but my experience at Tresham was completely different and I really loved it,” says Gemma. “My tutors were so supportive and amazing; I doubt I’ll ever get teachers like them again. I made some great friends and the opportunities offered to me here were fantastic.” Gemma’s enthusiasm and talent saw her get involved in one particularly exciting opportunity when she was selected to illustrate a new children’s book. Kettering-based Author Sarah Walsh chose Gemma to illustrate her new children’s book Hazel Bean Learns To Take Turns, part of a series of books aimed at two to five-year-olds. Gemma submitted her designs to Hazel as part of the course curriculum and the two of them ended up working together. “It was really exciting to see the book finally published,” says Gemma. “It was useful to be able to learn what working for a client is like this early on and it’s given me a great respect for those who do it full time, as I now appreciate the amount of work that goes into it.”

Gemma is now studying for a degree in Illustration at the University of Northampton. Her favourite aspect of art and design is character design and illustration, and she aspires to become a Concept Artist, Character Designer, or maybe even a Comic Artist. “I’ve loved drawing for as long as I can remember. It was probably the Studio Ghibli films - a Japanese animation film studio - that made me want to take art seriously; they are really inspiring.”

OUTSTANDING STUDENT NOMINATIONS

HANNAH UNDERWOOD Hannah’s five year journey at Bedford College has concluded with a first class BA (Hons) degree in Graphic Communication and a successful freelance graphic design business started during a very challenging year. “I knew I wanted to study Graphic Design when I left school,” says Hannah. “I love branding and layouts, and this is now what I get to do everyday in my job.” Hannah says it was working on live briefs with real clients during the course that gave her the skills and confidence to set up in business immediately after graduating. One such brief was for Charles Wells and some of Hannah’s work is now being used in their new brewery. “We’ve also had opportunities to present ideas to designers at London-based agencies, which has given me the confidence to pitch to new clients of my own,” says Hannah. “I wouldn’t have my business now if I hadn't studied for a degree with Bedford College. The enthusiasm of the tutors, small class sizes and one-to-one lectures were invaluable. Plus they taught us how to gain clients and keep them.” When lockdown hit back in March, Hannah launched an exciting project to occupy young people with art

activities while they were not at school. Her printable activity sheets have had around 48,000 downloads so far, after Hannah shared the resource across all Bedfordshire schools. It was also picked up by the Bedford Independent. During her course, Hannah also won a prestigious YCN Award and exhibited at the D&AD festival online this year and in person last year. Last year, Hannah’s team project was picked out as ‘One to Watch’; recognition that is only given to up to 30 projects across the whole festival.
