‘The Bedford College Group are a shining example of putting students at the heart of what they do and this has been demonstrated throughout their time partnering with Pearson.’
Our commitment is to design and validate BTEC Higher Nationals alongside partners that share our dedication to providing students with Level 4 and 5 qualifications that are fit for purpose and meet skills needs. We help students boost their employability and open up new opportunities by co-designing our qualifications with industry, employers and professional bodies. Pearson are excited to continue working with The Bedford College Group University Centre to ensure your learning is of a high quality and equips you with the skills to progress into the workforce, to gain professional accreditations or to top-up your qualifications and gain a degree.

‘Our strong partnership with The Bedford College Group University Centre gives you the option to progress on to the final year of a full Bachelor’s degree following the completion of your HND or Foundation Degree course.’
At the University of Bedfordshire, we believe that your university experience is about far more than just your course, which is why we offer you more than a great degree. You will receive support from both institutions that gives you a wealth of facilities to utilise during your studies, including our new seven-storey library in Luton. We’re a modern, vibrant University with campuses in Bedford (situated within walking distance of the College), Luton, Milton Keynes and Aylesbury, offering high quality, careerfocused teaching, excellent student support and a great global student experience.

The University of Huddersfield is a forward-thinking university based in West Yorkshire, home to nearly 20,000 students from over 100 countries. Recognised for teaching excellence, it holds an Outstanding Gold rating across all areas of the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF 2023) and an Outstanding Ofsted rating for apprenticeships.
All undergraduates gain professional work experience as part of their course and 95% progress to employment or further study within 15 months of graduating. Postgraduate students also thrive, with an average salary of £36,100 just 15 months after completing their degree (HESA 2021/22).

We are committed to helping you and guarantee your progression on to the next level of study with us.
LEVEL 4
These undergraduate qualifications focus on industry skills and are valued by employers. HNCs are assessed through assignments, projects and practical tasks that you complete throughout the course – not usually through exams. They are designed to lead straight to a career in industry or on to further study at university level.
HNCs take between one and two years to complete depending on the study route you choose and are generally equivalent to the first year of a full honours degree at university. You can continue your studies at The Bedford College Group by moving on to the HND qualification after your HNC.
LEVEL 3
YOUR JOURNEY STARTS HERE
Foundation Degrees are qualifications that have been developed with employers to advance your skills in a specific industry sector. They are assessed through project work, reports, exams, practical work and presentations.
A Foundation Degree takes two to four years to complete depending on the study route you choose. It is equivalent to the first two years of a full honours degree and, just like HNDs, you will have the option to ‘top-up’ your Foundation Degree and convert it into a full honours degree through an additional year of study.
Higher National Certificates and Higher National Diplomas can also be badged as an HTQ. These are qualifications approved for Apprenticeships and Technical Education that have been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses so that students get the specific training, knowledge and skills required for their chosen career.

These courses provide a recognised route into undergraduate or higher-level study if you don’t have the necessary qualifications or experience to start a course. Access courses aim to build the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to progress on to university-level programmes in the subject area you’re interested in.
We also offer the Level 2 Preparation for Access course. It is suited to adults who have been out of education for some time and who need to re-learn how to study at a higher level before progressing on to the intensive Access programme.
Depending on your chosen specialist subject, you will study subject specific units plus the following core units: essay writing and communication skills; mathematics; research study skills and study skills. You will also undertake an independent research project and tutorial. These units are the core subjects of study for all pathways.
Our experienced staff have been teaching Access and developing the programme over a number of years. We offer a strong pastoral support system to ensure that your return to education is made as smooth as possible with excellent tutor support. You will also be taught by subject specialist staff with industry experience.
On successful completion you can progress on to one of our university-level courses or complete further qualifications in your chosen specialist area.
We have close links with local universities including the University of Bedfordshire and the University of Northampton. We liaise with them directly about the entry criteria for applicants and the interview process.
Access courses are aimed at mature students (19+) who do not have the standard qualifications to study at undergraduate level. GCSE English and maths grade C/ grade 4 is desirable at most universities. This may depend on an English and maths entry test, where you will need to demonstrate English and maths skills at Level 2, in addition to interviewing successfully. You will need to research the entry criteria to your chosen universities. You may also be able to study either GCSE English or maths as an extra qualification. The entry criteria may be different for some pathways. Check online for individual course requirements.
If you are aged 19-23 and studying your first full Level 3 qualification, your course will be free for you to study. If you are aged 19-23 and already hold a Level 3 qualification, such as A-Levels or a BTEC Diploma, or if you are aged 24 or over, you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover your tuition fees. If you then go on to complete a higher-level qualification after your Access course, any remaining balance from your Advanced Learner Loan will be written off when you graduate.

On successful completion of this course, you can apply to study an additional year at Bedford College to gain a full BSc (Hons) degree, progress to a university, or you can enter employment, or students will achieve an industry-recognised qualification, which will enhance career prospects and your employability.

After completing Level 3, I decided to pursue the Level 4 and 5 Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs), known as HNC and HND. These qualifications provided a more structured, hands-on approach to learning, which suited my career aspirations. For example, in Database Design & Development, I gained practical skills in designing and implementing databases, while Networking taught me how to build and manage networks. The Security unit helped me understand the importance of cybersecurity in today’s tech landscape, and it sparked my interest in specialising in Cybersecurity. The Software Development Lifecycles unit introduced me to the process of developing software from start to finish,
giving me a deeper understanding of how Computing projects are structured and managed.
In addition to these technical courses, I also studied Professional Practice and Planning a Computing Project. These units allowed me to develop key skills in project management and professional conduct, preparing me for real-world challenges in the Computing industry. The practical assignments and real-world applications throughout my HNC and HND were incredibly valuable, as they enabled me to apply what I learned to actual industry scenarios.

Prior to studying Quantity Surveying HTQ I had no experience within the construction industry. However, I have gained a valuable insight into the construction environment, and the different sectors within this huge industry.
Studying quantity surveying has given me exposure to the industry, therefore I am able to apply this to my current job. For example, design work on Revit, the different types of contracts that are used within the industry; or health and safety standard which is vital to me, as I aim to obtain a CSCS card for managers and professionals. Studying has enabled me to make a link between what I am
continuously learning at Bedford College then applying it to my role, that being a; ‘junior CAD and estimating assistant’ at Pretium Consult. Without the college’s network and their assistance with this company I wouldn’t be in the position I am in now, which I am very grateful for. What I am learning at Bedford College intertwines effectively with my role at Pretium Consult. This is, enabling me to make strong links and I am confident my career will be successful within the construction industry.

I chose to study at college instead of going straight to university because I did not feel ready to be fully independent and live away from home. I was uncertain about committing to a full BA degree, so attending college allowed me to start with BTEC qualifications in photography and gave me the option to top-up to a BA later if I wanted.
The practical, work-driven nature of the college course really appealed to me, as I learn best through hands-on experience. Additionally, the course was more affordable than university, which was important since I wasn’t working and had limited funds at the time.
Another major factor in my decision was the smaller class sizes, which suited me well because I have Asperger’s. Being around large groups can be overwhelming, so the smaller setting gave me the confidence that I would get more one-to-one support when needed. This supportive environment helped me build my skills and confidence, eventually leading me to continue my education up to an MA in Art and Design.
The combination of practical learning, affordability, and tailored support made college the ideal choice for me to grow creatively and personally.

I have studied HNC and HND in mechanical engineering and it has helped me develop existing skills and learnt new skills. I’ve studied various topics along the higher education programme. Some of the topics have been relevant to the role I currently have which is a mechanical fitter and the others have given me a greater understanding of mechanical engineering which will be used later in my career. Some of the topics that have been widely beneficial to my day job include pneumatics and hydraulics, CAD and mechanical principles.
In pneumatic and hydraulics, it helped me understand the pneumatic drawings better in the workplace and also put forward suggestions on how to make the drawings better and easier to understand for other employees. Alongside with the CAD unit I know how the software works so I can transfer the skills I’ve learnt for a particular software to other software. This has proved beneficial to the workplace as it makes it easier to show what modifications need to be made if a design is wrong.
