Stronger Together Message from the Principal We are delighted that The Bedford College Group ends the year with the recognition that we deserve: Ofsted Good in all areas. We took on a huge challenge when we merged with Tresham College only two years ago in 2017. Tresham was a large college in a different county, rated inadequate by Ofsted in 2016 and with extensive financial deficits. However our passion, determination and exceptional hard work from staff at all levels of the College has culminated with Ofsted’s recent announcement that The Bedford College Group is rated Good in all areas, with adult and young students developing “excellent” study skills.
We have worked hard to build links with communities in Northamptonshire whilst strengthening our existing links in Bedfordshire. And, as we look forward to the future, we are committed to expanding and enhancing these partnerships across the region and intend to deliver world class education for the communities we serve. I hope you can take a few minutes to read on and find out more about our hard work this year.

What’s more, the Group has achieved the highest overall student achievement in the Eastern Region, and the speedy improvement at Tresham received personal congratulations from the Further Education Commissioner.

Our achievements are all the more significant when we consider that the Department for Education’s (DfE) research shows, on average, merging colleges see their income reduce, pass rates decline and payroll costs rise. We are delighted to be bucking the trend!
Message from the Chair of the Corporation When we merged with Tresham College in 2017 we promised to create something special for the communities of Corby, Kettering and Wellingborough. The Corporation has kept its word, and Ofsted’s recent rating is testimony to the good start made in meeting that commitment. Most of the work that leads to such a favourable rating is hidden from students and their parents, but the Corporation is fully aware of the efforts of Ian and his colleagues and is very grateful for them. Our outstanding financial management, (as judged by our funding body), has meant that we have been able to keep investing in projects to benefit our students. For example, we have developed an exciting new Advanced Engineering Centre in Bedford, a unique Zoological Education Centre at our Shuttleworth campus, and two new town centre Learning Centres for adults wanting to gain IT skills in Corby and Kettering. Work is also under way to create a redeveloped campus in Wellingborough.

We have also worked with the Bedford local authority to build primary and secondary schools in the fast growing Wixams community, and both are already oversubscribed. In the two years since we merged with Tresham, we have similarly been strengthening links with our Northamptonshire community and these are already bearing fruit. Looking ahead, developments in technology, robotics and artificial intelligence are likely to have profound implications for our students, the employers we support, and the way we teach. Accordingly, we expect to be innovative and to invest heavily in this area as well. Our outstanding students deserve nothing less.

OUR FUTURE PLANS
New look campus at Wellingborough takes shape
Cladding work begins at the new look campus
£10 MILLION WELLINGBOROUGH CAMPUS REDEVELOPMENT
The Bedford College Group has been awarded £7.5 million from SEMLEP's local growth fund in addition to the Group's own resources to redevelop Tresham College’s Wellingborough campus. Opening to students in September 2020, the redeveloped campus, located in the heart of Wellingborough town centre, will enable 1,000 additional students to study locally. Not just young people but also adult students who want to expand their skills or change careers.

EXPANDING A-LEVEL SUCCESS Building on the success of The Bedford Sixth Form, established in 2012.
The Bedford College Group is now planning to offer students in Northamptonshire similar Sixth Form opportunities. A period of extensive community consultation and research is currently underway to ensure this facility meets the needs of local people. The Bedford Sixth Form celebrates success

OUR FUTURE PLANS £4 MILLION ZOOLOGICAL EDUCATION CENTRE
Shuttleworth College campus will host its official opening of its new Zoological Education Centre in Spring 2020.
Biome opened as part of the ZEC at Shuttleworth in September 2019
Having enrolled its first students in September 2019, it includes an ‘Eden style’ biome with tropical rainforest setting, immersive bio-sphere and a wide range of species. Conservation and care are the key priority, enabling students to learn how to support and care for endangered species. The Centre will put Shuttleworth College firmly on the world map in terms of the unique education experience offered to students.

I’ve progressed from an Advanced Level apprenticeship to a Higher Level apprenticeship and I truly believe it offers the best of both worlds – on the job training in addition to respected qualifications. I set up the Tresham Apprenticeship Group which has been recognised regionally by MP Tom Pursglove and has led to me becoming an official Apprenticeship Ambassador for the East Midlands area. In March 2019 I was handpicked to visit the House of Commons as part of National Apprenticeship Week

The community scorecard is a tool to help everyone understand more about how The Bedford College Group is performing. The scorecard is made up of 12 sections covering all aspects of our organisation, from our students’ success and our environmental record, to how the Group contributes to the local community and more.
