At Bede’s Upper School, Eastbourne, every pupil’s path is uniquely theirs. Personal tutors uncover what makes each individual thrive and actively pave the way for their success. With dedicated guidance during their initial half-term, every young Bedian meets one-toone with their tutor to explore the vast array of opportunities on offer. For some, these conversations yield immediate, practical goals; for others, they ignite a broader journey of personal discovery. While individual mentorship has always defined the Bede’s ethos, we have formalised this framework to ensure consistent progress. Parents are kept close to the journey through regular tutor updates, quarterly reports in Year 10 and half-term reports for Year 11 alongside parent consultations, highlighting concrete examples of their child’s development.

We hold the very highest of ambitions for our pupils underpinned by our supportive educational environment ensuring that every pupil has the opportunity to be outstanding. Bolstered by our co-curricular programme where every pupil must engage in a service, creative and action-themed activity and our enrichment programme such as our Leadership Awards, DofE and HPQ. English Literature OVERVIEW The study of Literature is so much more than reading words; it is an invitation to explore the world around us and step into the shoes of others. Through a vibrant, engaging range of texts, pupils delight in uncovering both explicit meanings and the hidden treasures beneath the surface. They cultivate a deep appreciation for the author’s craft while growing into confident thinkers who love expressing their own unique voices. We inspire our pupils to become empathetic, enthusiastic critical thinkers who are excited to bring their analytical skills and broadened worldview to the next stage of their academic journey. Pupils explore four thoughtfully chosen texts: an inspiring poetry anthology, a set novel and two dynamic drama pieces. With open-book examinations, our teaching focuses entirely on the pure joy of understanding and skill-building rather than mere memory testing.

English Language OVERVIEW The study of Language is the cornerstone of personal growth and self-expression. Through a vibrant selection of rich and engaging texts, pupils delight in discovering new perspectives and shaping their own understanding of the world. They experience the joy of finding their own authentic voice, both spoken and written, building flair and self-assurance in a warmly supportive environment. Through the Eduqas course, pupils dive into fiction and non-fiction extracts, responding perceptively and creatively. Maths OVERVIEW The Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A (4MA1) syllabus offers an exciting, globally recognised qualification that builds vibrant mathematical foundations. This engaging course nurtures essential problem-solving, logical reasoning and analytical skills, empowering pupils for everyday life while preparing them with enthusiasm for advanced studies like A Levels. The rich curriculum celebrates number, algebra, geometry and statistics. Pupils apply numerical skills to real-world contexts, master algebraic structures and interpret data with growing confidence. We offer two tailored tiers - Foundation (grades 1–5) and Higher (grades 4–9), ensuring every pupil feels supported and challenged. Science OVERVIEW At KS4, pupils embark on an exciting journey through AQA GCSE Science, choosing between Combined Science: Trilogy or Separate Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics). Both pathways spark a rich, secure understanding across all three disciplines, inspiring real confidence in hands-on inquiry, data handling, problem-solving and scientific literacy. Brought to life through a blend of dynamic teaching, practical work and real-world applications, the course helps pupils marvel at core scientific concepts and see their relevance to the wider world. Combined Science offers a broad, wellrounded education leading to two GCSE grades, while Separate Sciences invites pupils to explore Biology, Chemistry and Physics in depth, resulting in three individual GCSEs.

ASSESSMENT Pupils will follow either AQA GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy or AQA GCSE Separate Sciences. Combined Science: Trilogy, (double GCSE award) pupils sit six written examinations at the end of Year 11: Two Biology papers, two Chemistry papers and two Physics papers. Each paper is 1 hour 15 minutes and may be taken at Foundation or Higher Tier. Separate Sciences: Biology, Chemistry and Physics are each assessed through two written examinations at the end of Year 11. Each paper is 1 hour 45 minutes and may be taken at Foundation or Higher Tier. This leads to three separate GCSE qualifications.

Economics OVERVIEW Why do prices change? How do global decisions shape our everyday lives? GCSE Economics offers an engaging journey into these big questions, sparking rich curiosity about how our world thrives, how resources are shared and the exciting role economists play. The course explores six fascinating thematic areas, moving from the mechanics of local markets to the vibrant dynamics of the global economy and international trade. Our curriculum inspires pupils to delight in debating ethical choices, discovering how contemporary topics such as inflation, market solutions, environmental sustainability and globalisation, powerfully influence policy making. Through active, interactive learning, pupils master analytical tools to interpret financial data and construct compelling arguments, applying concepts to real-world scenarios. GCSE Economics doesn’t just prepare pupils for exams; it equips them with vital life skills and financial literacy, empowering them to step confidently into a bright, ever-changing future.

Computer Science OVERVIEW The Edexcel GCSE Computer Science course balances core theory with exciting real-world application, split equally across two dynamic components. Paper 1 (Principles of Computer Science) explores key theoretical concepts in a written exam. You will discover computer hardware functions (like Von Neumann architecture), how vibrant images and sound come alive in binary, network protocols, cybersecurity and the fascinating ethical and legal impacts of technology. Paper 2 (Application of Computational Thinking) brings your skills to life through an interactive, onscreen coding exam. Instead of writing code on paper, you’ll enjoy using a live IDE to write, debug and refine real programs (typically in Python). This showcases your growing mastery of loops, conditional logic, arrays and file handling. Ultimately, Edexcel moves beyond mere memorisation, focusing instead on the thrill of logic, creative problem-solving and building authentic programming skills that mirror how real software developers work.

History OVERVIEW Welcome to GCSE History! We embark on an inspiring journey through the pivotal 20th-century events that forged our modern world. Across two final examinations, pupils explore four captivating topics: depth studies in Germany’s development and dictatorship alongside superpower relations in a divided world, a historical investigation into the origins and course of World War One and a breadth study examining changes in medicine. Beyond this exciting content, the course builds invaluable lifelong skills, empowering pupils to think critically, analyse complex evidence, interpret diverse perspectives and craft well-reasoned judgments with confidence.

Fine Art OVERVIEW This course offers an inspiring pathway into the vibrant world of creative arts, allowing pupils to specialise in Fine Art, Graphic Communication, Three-dimensional Design, Photography, or the broader Art, Craft and Design endorsement. The curriculum is structured around two exciting components. First, the Personal Portfolio is a wonderfully curated collection of practical work featuring a sustained project alongside supporting studies that showcase your conceptual and technical development. Second, the Externally Set Assignment, invites you to respond creatively to an external prompt, build an engaging preparatory portfolio and conclude with a rewarding 10-hour practical exam. Throughout both components, pupil progress is guided by four core Assessment Objectives: developing ideas through research, refining techniques, recording observations with meaningful annotations and presenting a cohesive final response. This enables pupils to discover their unique artistic voice while joyfully mastering essential creative processes.

OVERVIEW The GCSE Music course offers a rich and uplifting journey through three dynamic components: Performing, Composing and Appraising. Pupils hone their individual and ensemble performance skills, while discovering the thrill of turning their creative ideas into original musical compositions. The curriculum covers four areas of study: Musical Forms and Devices (Western Classical Tradition), Music for Ensemble (including Jazz, Blues, and Musical Theatre), Film Music and Popular Music (Pop, Rock, and Bhangra). Assessment balances these creative talents, with 60% dedicated to non-examined assessment (NEA) through an inspiring portfolio of performances and compositions. The remaining 40% is assessed via an engaging listening examination, where pupils apply their musical ears to both familiar and exciting unprepared extracts. This course nurtures passion, creativity and confidence, providing a wonderful foundation for future musical adventures.

Modern Foreign Languages OVERVIEW The Edexcel GCSE French and Spanish courses offer pupils an opportunity to build practical communication skills while discovering the vibrant languages and cultures of the French- and Spanish-speaking worlds. Pupils grow their confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing across a range of topics, including family, future aspirations, travel, technology and global issues. They learn to express opinions with flair, share ideas and communicate meaningfully for real-life purposes. These courses also nurture valuable transferable skills like problem-solving, memory, literacy and intercultural appreciation. GCSE French and Spanish provide an inspiring foundation for A-Level studies and beyond, equipping pupils with dynamic skills that are valued by universities and employers in our interconnected world.

ASSESSMENT Pupils are examined in four equally weighted skills through separate examinations: Listening – 25% Speaking - 25% Reading – 25% Writing – 25% Pupils are entered for either the Foundation Tier (grades 1–5) or the Higher Tier (grades 4–9). The teacher conducts the speaking examination, which includes a role-play, a read-aloud task, and a conversation. Reading and writing assessments also include translation between English and the target language. The qualification is graded on the standard GCSE scale of 9–1.

Drama OVERVIEW GCSE Drama is an exciting, dynamic and practical course that places live performance at its heart, inspiring pupils to flourish as confident actors, imaginative theatre-makers and creative designers. All pupils devise their own original drama, explore play texts practically and prepare two text-based performances, with opportunities to specialise as a performer, designer, or both. Design pathways include lighting, sound, set, costume and puppetry. Alongside practical performance, pupils develop a rich understanding of drama and theatre through the study of a set play and the analysis and evaluation of live theatre. The course combines creative exploration with rigorous critical thinking, developing pupils’ ability to interpret, reflect and refine their work. Above all, GCSE Drama equips pupils with invaluable transferable skills, including collaboration, communication, creativity, resilience and analytical thinking. Pupils gain the confidence to pursue their own ideas, the resilience to refine and improve them, and the ability to respond thoughtfully to the ideas of others. Whether they choose to pursue a career in the performing arts or a completely different path, pupils emerge from the course with greater self-assurance, creativity and a broad set of skills that can be applied in further study, employment and life beyond the classroom.

Food and Cookery NCFE LEVEL 1/2 OVERVIEW The NCFE Level 2 Food and Cookery qualification is a hands-on course equivalent to one GCSE that sparks pupils’ passion for nutrition, food science, food safety and the culinary arts. Pupils delight in learning to prepare, cook and beautifully present a variety of dishes while exploring inspiring topics such as healthy eating, food provenance, dietary needs and creative recipe development.
