towards

introduction

It is my pleasure to share with you the new 3-year strategy for the Beatson Cancer Charity. In preparing this strategy, we have spent time talking. We have talked to people affected by cancer, our staff and volunteer team and the wider network of NHS and research colleagues who we have the privilege of working alongside. These conversations have helped to shape the vision, direction of travel and strategic goals that form the basis of our future priorities.

Over the next three years we will continue to strive for a future where cancer no longer holds the same challenges and impact as it does today. At the same time, we will be there to support and care for those who are dealing with that impact in the here and now. We will keep our focus and goals simple, moving

Towards Tomorrow – Empowering better outcomes through care and commitment

Thank you for being a part of our mission and for helping us to make a difference.

How we support our individuals and families

We heard from individuals, families and communities affected by cancer who told us about the value of our services. They talked about the importance of comprehensive wellbeing support, advice and help with work related issues and psychological based programmes of support for life with cancer, or life after cancer treatment. We also heard about the importance of help to understand and manage living with grief having lost someone we love to cancer. These conversations demonstrated the trust and respect placed on our services and made us even more determined to ensure the continued and consistent delivery of care and support to those who need it most. It renewed our energy and enthusiasm for continuing to innovate and develop how we deliver existing support in order to reach more people while also staying open to new and emerging need. This will remain a key priority now and in the future.

How we support our NHS colleagues

Our clinical colleagues told us about the value and potential that is unlocked by working in partnership with the Beatson Cancer Charity. This allows the Charity to channel the support and funds so generously donated by supporters into areas where it can add most value, supplementing the high-quality care already provided by NHS staff and services. This partnership approach allows both the Charity and the NHS to maximise impact and enhance patient experience through co-ordinated and complementary planning and delivery of cancer treatment and care.

How we support research

Our research colleagues spoke to us of the value of research funding provided via our Grants Programme. Once again using a co-ordinated and complementary approach, working closely with academics, other third sector organisations and the wider research community, the charity has added value to existing research, enabled new developments and discoveries and supported these translating into clinical trials and new treatment regimes. This work is vital to ensure that the future of cancer treatment and care continues to improve and advance and so continues to form a key part of our future priorities.

How we need your support

We also heard from our amazing supporters who talked to us about the importance of connecting with our cause and seeing first hand the impact and outcomes that we can achieve working together. Their support underpins all that the charity achieves and represents real and tangible community and societal support for those facing the challenges that cancer can bring. Respecting this motivation and continuing to provide a way for individuals, communities and business’s to give in a meaningful way will remain key to helping us achieve our ambitions.

Our commitment to you

Crucially we also heard that language and storytelling can have a profound effect on people when they are already feeling vulnerable and anxious. The impact of cancer is close to us all with 1 in 2 people affected by the disease. We all see firsthand the experiences of our family, friends, neighbours and work colleagues as they are diagnosed and treated. That is why we will continue to be honest about the impact of cancer while remaining hopeful for what can be achieved when we come together to care for and support each other.

who we are

our mission

Beatson Cancer Charity supports people affected by cancer, every step of the way from the hospital ward right to the heart of the communities we serve. We provide a range of services, as well as fund specialists posts, research and education programmes to invest in a better future for cancer patients and their families.

We collectively achieve this by providing patient-facing services, funding a variety of specialist posts and delivering enhancements to services, facilities and equipment.

We inspire innovation, working with everyone to make a difference to cancer treatment for patients.

Our behaviours should reflect our core values and employees should also understand the needs of others and do what they can within the scope of their roles to ensure that this is at the heart of the services we provide.

We put people at the heart of everything, adopting a tailored approach to support the people who use our services we provide.

We are accountable in everything we do, conducting ourselves with the utmost integrity, treating people with respect by building trust.

Our behaviours should reflect transparency in our actions, decisions and communication with both people at work and those we support. Ensuring we are honest and open about our interactions and decision making.

We treat everyone with dignity and care, respecting their individuality and inspiring hope.

Our behaviours should ensure that we at Team Beatson respect and value each other as individuals and as professionals within our roles.

We use our creativity to devise new and innovative ways of working for the benefit of our patients, supporters and families.

Our behaviours should inspire others either as a colleague or as a manager of teams. Encouraging new ideas and new ways of working across Team Beatson.

We work closely with clinical, academic and cancer care partners to add value to the patient pathway and loved experience.

Our behaviours should support a collaborative working environment through building trusting relationships. At Team Beatson we promote and encourage effective communication across our teams and individuals to help foster better collegial working.

We are professional and seek to continuously improve, show leadership within our field and act as a catalyst for positive change at local and national level.

Our behaviours should promote ongoing and continuous personal development through continuous learning and growth. At Team Beatson we encourage our staff to create and support a culture of proactive knowledge sharing and embrace any challenges on this journey.
