B
eaconFest is a celebration of all that’s boomer and senior related. Last year, a record number of people attended this festive event. This year’s senior fair will be from 9 am-3 pm Thursday, April 21 at the Two Rivers Convention Center in downtown Grand Junction.
Why attend BeaconFest? This year’s BeaconFest features an exciting lineup of entertainment, including the ever-popular bone tree and local country star Peggy Malone. Free seminars will be offered on topics as wide-ranging as identity theft to estate planning. Well-known restaurants such as Rib City Grill, Olive Garden, Nick ‘n’ Willy’s Pizza, Mi Mexico, Taste of Heaven, and Buffalo Wild Wings will be giving away free samples of their food.
Feeling lucky? Thousands of dollars worth of valuable prizes and cash will be given away in free door prize drawings throughout the day.
Vendors galore! Vendor booths from over 100 businesses and agencies will be set up to provide current and prospective seniors with information about products and
services available to help them successfully navigate the aging process. We have home improvement folks, health and nutrition information, representatives from many of our local assisted living facilities, government officials, beauty products and services, longevity screenings, real estate professionals and even a dentist.

I’m always impressed with the wide variety of exhibitors that participate at BeaconFest and the way they market themselves. Some bring just themselves, along with a handful of brochures. Main Stage Entertainers bone tree
9:00am, Deep Canyon Music bone tree is an acoustic band from the Unaweep Canyon of Western Colorado. This new band that plays deep canyon music, defined by its members as songs that have the depth of true American music, rebuilt note by note to create a new and exciting mix. King ‘N’ Trio
Noon, Folk/Americana Since its inception in December 2001, the King ‘N’ Trio has entertained audiences with their enthusiastic, toe-tapping, sing-along music. Band members Chris Unfug, Merritt Kinsey, Russ Williams and Terry Toner are members of the Grand Junction Rotary Club and have raised over $200,000 to date for Rotary Foundation, the Avalon Theatre restoration, Mesa County Partners and many other charitable projects. With the help of the Grand Junction Rotary Club, the band has recorded five CDs. Proceeds from CD sales are also part of the band’s fundraising efforts.

The Centennial Brass 10:00 am
The Centennial Brass is a group formed from the brass players of the Centennial Band. They play in places where the entire band wouldn’t fit. Most often the band includes brass quintet with tuba, two trumpets, trombone and French horn. They play all kinds of music including marches, patriotic songs, TV themes, and popular tunes.
Danny Agajanian & The Hallelujah Band
11:00 am, Bluegrass/Ragtime Danny Agajanian plays a mix of bluegrass, ragtime and Civil Warera music. Once a warm-up artist for Billy Graham, he has toured with many performers and has played in many venues across the U.S. and Canada, including churches, Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, the Golden Nugget, the Grand Ole Opry and more. He has lived in Grand Junction for over 20 years.
Javier de los Santos has performed extensively in Mexico, USA, Spain and Brazil. Recent performances include with Pepe Romero and the Romero’s Guitar Quartet at the Celedonio Romero Guitar Institute in Oklahoma City University, and as a soloist with the Grand Junction and Boulder Symphony Orchestras. Javier has been appointed guitar instructor at the ‘Lead Guitar’ and the Aspen Music Festival and School’s Guitar Programs in the Roaring Fork Valley. Javier is founder and Artistic Director of Mariachi San Jose based in Grand Junction, CO. Javier is the President and Artistic Director of the Western Colorado Classical Guitar Society based in Grand Junction, CO. Currently, Javier lives in Grand Junction, CO and teaches guitar privately and at Colorado Mesa University.

2:00 pm, Guitar Favorites/Sound Manager Equipped with his trusty guitar, Ron Koss is dynamic. Whether he’s entertaining with Americana rock favorites, country melodies or swing tunes, just about anything he plays has audiences singing along and brings them to their feet. He has played music professionally for over 30 years. He is BeaconFest’s sound manager and has performed at numerous events across the Grand Valley for over a decade.

Foyer Entertainers Peggy Malone 9:00 am, Country
Peggy Malone is known in the valley for her work with seniors. As an active member of the Western Music Association (WMA), she strives to keep cowboy music alive and well. Her shows thrive on audience participation with her maracas and “stick hosses.” Her songs range from classic country and western to pop. Years ago, she won the Patsy Cline Sing Alike Contest at the Regency Hotel in Denver and has been nominated by the WMA as Female Vocalist of the Year. Two of her songs have received widespread attention. “Appaloosa, Running Through My Mind” was adopted as the Appaloosa Horse Club’s song in Moscow, Idaho. “Singin’ A Cowboy Song” won a Heartland Regional Emmy and is featured in the PBS Special “A Night At The Rodeo.” In 2013, she won Colorado Country Music Hall of Fame Entertainer of the Year. She also performs loved tunes from the ’40s through the ’80s. Participants will come to understand the presence of suicide in our community through the lens of statistics. The seminar will also address the circumstances surrounding the choice of suicide. A portion of the seminar will present signs of suicide, and participants will learn how to help someone by knowing what to say and what not to say, and what resources are available for help. One of them is voted as the BeaconFest Volunteer of the Year. So what does it mean to be Volunteer of the Year? This person goes above and beyond his or her normal responsibilities in order to make a difference in the lives of others.

Senior Services and Volunteer Opportunities Senior Companion Program and Foster Grandparent Program Senior Companion volunteers help homebound seniors remain active and independent by providing transportation, companionship, and help with daily activities. Foster Grandparent volunteers provide educational support to at-risk children. Volunteers 55 and older meeting income and service commitment guidelines earn a tax-free stipend.
Gray Gourmet Volunteers staff nine dining sites serving healthy lunches and make deliveries to homebound seniors. Volunteers receive training, special insurance, plus social events and contacts.
