Newsom touts Bloomberg News endorsement of economic policies

Armed with a glowing column by a leading publication in the financial press that praised California's economic performance amid tenuous times at the national and global levels, Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday fired back at critics behind headlines tracking the state's failings on a number of pressing issues.

Wildfires, droughts, floods, mass transportation, aging roads, education, homelessness, unaffordable housing, widening inequality and poverty — plus the exodus of billionaires, corporate headquarters and longtime residents — top the list of oft-repeated critiques against the termed-out governor who is considering

a run for the U.S. presidency in 2028.

According to the governor's office, "Under the Newsom administration, the California economy has continued to dominate, despite Trump’s failed economic policies and sustained political attacks by Murdoch’s right-wing media machine against the Golden State."

As Matthew Winkler, Bloomberg News editor in chief emeritus, recently wrote: “Of all the prevailing media narratives around Gavin Newsom, the one that is most conspicuous by its absence is how under its two-term governor California became the top performing economy not just among its 49 siblings but also any

developed nation. No wonder Elon Musk quietly sought Newsom’s help when the world’s richest man sought to move a bunch of Tesla Inc. engineers back to the state after relocating them to Texas."

Under the headline "Who Knew ‘Slick’ Gavin Newsom Was Such an Economic Maestro?" Winkler expounds on a long list of economic accomplishments since the governor's election in 2019, noting that California with population of 39 million people just supplanted Japan with 123 million as the world's fourth-largest economy.

The Bloomberg column reported that after Newsom

took office, the state's gross domestic product surged 40% to more than $4 trillion, accounting for more than 14% of U.S. output. This outpaced major economies including China, which expanded 32%, and Germany's 16% GDP growth.

The Trump administration questioned Bloomberg's conclusions, noting the recent exodus of people and businesses from the state.

“If California’s economy was doing so well under Gavin Newsom’s watch, millions of Californians would not have fled to GOP-led states like Texas and Florida over the past 10 years,” White House spokesman Kush Desai said

The Artemis II mission and its crew with a Southern California native at the helm were on their way back home on Tuesday after flying around the far side of the moon and the farthest distance from Earth that humans have ever traveled.

The spaceflight surpassed Apollo 13's previous distance record set in 1970 at 248,655 miles. Artiemis II set the record during its lunar flyby Monday, according to NASA. At its farthest point, the astronauts inside the Orion spacecraft will have traveled 252,756 miles, before looping back toward Earth, establishing the new record for human spaceflight.

The lunar loop took six hours and was the highlight of NASA's first mission to the moon since the Apollo era. Artemis II sent three Americans and a Canadian into lunar orbit as a step

toward a planned landing near the moon's south pole within two years.

The spacecraft is more than halfway done with its mission and was on a return trajectory toward Earth, with splashdown expected Friday off San Diego, NASA reported.

The mission launched Wednesday from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Artemis II astronaut Victor Glover was born in Pomona, went to Ontario High School and graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Glover is the pilot of the Orion spacecraft and is the first person of color on a lunar-mission crew.

Glover spent more than five months aboard the International Space Station in 2020-21, traveling there aboard SpaceX's first full crew rotation flight by a U.S. commercial spacecraft. That work made him the first Black

2 of 3 defendants acquitted in UCI protest trial

Two of three men who took part in pro-Palestinian protests on the UC Irvine campus nearly two years ago were acquitted Tuesday, while jurors deadlocked in favor of acquitting the third defendant.

Adel Shaker Hijazi, 42, and Jacob Andrew Hernandez, 33, were acquitted of misdemeanor refusal to disperse stemming from the May 15, 2024, protests on the campus. Jurors deadlocked 7-5 for acquitting Malik Alrefai, 25, of the same misdemeanor.

Jurors began deliberating at the end of the day Thursday and resumed Monday before reaching a verdict about 2:40 p.m. Tuesday.

to take it defendant by defendant," Haddad said.

"They acquitted (Hijazi) because they did not believe the prosecutor proved my client stayed beyond the dispersal order," Haddad said. "He was on bodycam (video footage) saying he was leaving when he was arrested."

Hernandez argued he was at the protest working as a journalist. He had to prove beyond a preponderance of the evidence that he was in attendance as a reporter, while prosecutors had to prove beyond a reasonable doubt he was not working press.

Amendment rights."

James Henshaw of the Alternate Defender's Office, who represents Alrefai, said in his opening statement, "In this country, law enforcement doesn't get to decide how long someone can express their First Amendment rights."

Melody Haddad of the Alternate Defender's Office, who represents Hijazi, told City News Service her client was "certainly relieved, very happy."

The three defense attorneys representing the men "collaborated, and created a joint defense" of free speech, Haddad said.

The jury foreperson said the panel could not agree on whether it was an unlawful assembly, which would justify the dispersal order from law enforcement, according to Haddad.

"At that point they decided

Jurors also found there was "no clear and present danger of violence occurring immediately" when UCI police issued a dispersal order, Haddad said. They could not agree whether there was any criminal activity that prompted the dispersal order, she added.

Deputy District Attorney Matthew Bradbury said in his opening statement of the trial that the three were among 49 arrested when law enforcement shut down protests, which started April 29, 2024, in the aftermath of Israel's response to the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attacks.

The protests at UCI

Alrefai was still on scene at 6 p.m. Hernandez was there at 7 p.m., and Hijazi was at the protest at 7:24 p.m., Bradbury said. There was no evidence they resisted police, "but that's not what this case is about," he added.

Haddad said in her opening statement, "This case rests on our First Amendment rights to free speech and assembly."

Haddad said the only violence on the day in question came from law enforcement.

"They're not a threat to public safety," she said of protesters. "It was not an unlawful assembly. They're acting within their First

Henshaw said law enforcement that responded on May 15 "made assumptions" about what was happening in the lecture hall "and a rush to judgment."

He said prosecutors could not prove the protest was an "unlawful assembly."

Madeline Hart of the Orange County Public Defender's Office, who represents Hernandez, said in her opening statement that her client was on scene as a photo journalist.

The three defendants should be found not guilty "because they were present at a lawful, peaceful protest," Hart said.

Metro hosts listening sessions on Board of Directors composition

Metrohostedits secondlistening session Monday in Redondo Beach to hear from Los Angeles County residents about a proposal to alter the composition of its leadership board.

Since 1993, the Metro Board has been composed of 13 voting members, consisting of the five county supervisors, the LA mayor, and three mayoral appointees and four members representing the other 87 cities in the county by geographic area. In 2003, a non-voting member who represents the governor of

California was added.

In 2024, voters approved Measure G, the county's Government Structure, Ethics and Accountability Charter Amendment, which established an elected county executive, an independent Ethics Commission and expanded the Board of Supervisors from five to nine members.

Metro is exploring potential changes to its board to reflect the changes at the county level. Metro is also examining whether the board should have one or several members representing daily riders.

Metro Board Chair and Whittier City Councilman

Fernando Dutra established an Ad Hoc Board Composition Committee in February.

The committee will review the current composition of the board, gather input from Metro riders and evaluate possible recommendations regarding board membership.

The committee will oversee preparation of a report with final recommendations by June 30.

Metro will host its listening session at 5 p.m. at the Resi-

CNN to host California gubernatorial debate next month

CNN will host a California gubernatorial primary debate in Los Angeles next month, offering voters a high-profile forum to hear directly from candidates in one of the nation's most closely watched races.

The two-hour debate on May 5 is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and will air live on CNN, CNN International and CNN en Español, with streaming available for subscribers, according to the network. Anchors Elex Michaelson and Kaitlan Collins will moderate.

The event comes as the race is entering its final stretch ahead of the primary election, with a wide field of candidates seeking to lead the nation's most populous state.

The Republicans in the race are podcaster and former television

host Steve Hilton, who received an endorsement Monday from President Donald Trump, and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco.

Democratic candidates are former U.S. Health and Human Services secretary and California attorney general Xavier Becerra, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, former congresswoman Katie Porter, billionaire financier Tom Steyer, Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Dublin, state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, former Los Angeles mayor and Assembly speaker Antonio Villaraigosa and former state Controller Betty Yee. CNN said invitations to participate in the debate will be based on several criteria, including meeting requirements set by the

California secretary of state, raising or contributing at least $1 million to their campaign and demonstrating at least 3% support in qualifying polls.

The eligibility window will close April 27 at 6 p.m., and polls used to determine participation must be released between Feb. 1 and that date and meet CNN's standards.

The debate follows the cancellation of a previously scheduled gubernatorial debate at USC after criticism over its selection criteria. Organizers scrapped that event last month amid complaints that the formula used to determine participants was biased and excluded several major candidates, including Becerra, Thurmond, Villaraigosa and Yee.

UCLA routs South Carolina for 1st NCAA women's basketball championship

Afree celebration of UCLA's first NCAA women's basketball championship will be held Wednesday night at Pauley Pavilion.

An unprecedented defensive performance gave the Bruins the title as they became the first team to hold its opponent to under 30% shooting overall and under 15% shooting in 3-point shots in an NCAA championship game, men's or women's, according to the sports analytics website OptaSTATS.

South Carolina made 18 of 62 shots, 29%, including 2 of 15 3-point shots, 13.3%, in the 79-51 loss Sunday at Phoenix.

The 3-point shot was first used in the men's tournament in 1987 and in the women's tournament in 1988.

The 28-point margin was the third-largest among the 44 NCAA women's basketball championship games, behind Connecticut's 93-60 victory over Louisville in 2013 and the Huskies' 82-51 victory over Syracuse in 2016.

UCLA (37-1) never trailed, and were tied only once, 2-2.

18 shots in the first quarter, 16.67%, and 6 of 17 in the second, 35.29% in front of a crowd announced at 15,856 at Mortgage Matchup Center.

The Bruins led 21-10 after the first quarter and 36-23 at halftime, then outscored South Carolina, 29-5, in the third quarter, increasing their lead to 61-32 entering the fourth quarter.

The Bruins' biggest lead was 76-41 with 4:35 to play.

UCLA made 30 of 69 shots, 43.5%, including 8 of 19 3-point shots, 42.1%.

Junior guard Tessa Johnson scored 14 and freshman guard Agot Makeer 11 in 23 minutes off the bench as South Carolina (36-4) lost in the final for the second consecutive season.

"We just didn't have it today," said Staley, who coached the Gamecocks to NCAA championships in 2017, 2022 and 2024. "We tried, but we just didn't have it today. They were the better team today. Congratulations to them."

"We just knew we were going to win because of all the prep and work that we put in," said Bruins' center Lauren Betts, who was selected as the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. "When we find a way to play together and play selflessly, do what we do, no one can stop us."

The Gamecocks missed eight of their first nine shots as UCLA broke out to a 13-4 lead 4:51 into the game.

"I thought the first quarter, first half, we had a lot of people taking shots that aren't normal for us,"

South Carolina coach Dawn Staley said. "So we didn't do a good job of getting the people that probably was supposed to get some better looks the ball.

"But I think UCLA had a lot to do with it."

The Gamecocks made 3 of

Gabriela Jaquez led five Bruin starters in double figures with a game-high 21 points with fellow forward Gianna Kneepkens adding 15, Betts 14 and guards Charlisse Leger-Walker and Kiki Rice 10 each.

The game marked the end of the college careers for all five of UCLA's starters.

All the Bruins' points in the Final Four were scored by seniors or graduate students.

"I said I wanted to find uncommon, courageous women that were willing to make uncommon choices that maybe possibly could yield an uncommon result, and today it did," UCLA coach Cori Close said in her opening remarks in the postgame news conference while tearing up.

The Bruins completed the season on a schoolrecord 31-game winning streak.

Oddsmakers had made South Carolina a 3 1/2-point favorite. ESPN's Matchup Predictor gave the Gamecocks a 52.5% chance of winning, the Bruins a 47.5% chance.

The victory gave UCLA its 126th NCAA team championship, second behind Stanford's 138. USC is third 115 and Texas fourth with 60. The Bruins' 1995 softball championship was vacated by the NCAA Committee on Infractions and is not included in the total. Championships in the Football Bowl Subdivision and Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, which conducted championships through 1982, are not included.

UCLA won the national championship in 1978 when the tournament was conducted by the AIAW. The NCAA began conducting a women's basketball tournament in 1982.

President Trump endorses Steve Hilton for California governor

California's gubernatorial candidates were reacting Monday to President Donald Trump's endorsement of Republican podcaster and former television host Steve Hilton in the state's gubernatorial race.

"I have known and respected Steve Hilton, who is running for governor of California, for many years," Trump wrote late Sunday night.

"He is a truly fine man, one who has watched as this once great state has gone to hell. Gavin Newscum and the Democrats have done an absolutely horrendous job. People are fleeing, crime is increasing, and taxes are the highest of any state in the country, maybe the world. Steve can turn it around, before it is too late, and, as president, I will help him to do so! With federal help, and a great governor, like Steve Hilton, California can be better than ever before! Steve Hilton has my COMPLETE & TOTAL ENDORSEMENT. He will be a GREAT governor and, importantly, WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!!!"

Hilton's campaign responded about an hour later.

"President Donald J. Trump just gave Steve Hilton his complete and total endorsement for governor of California," the Hilton campaign posted on X. "With President Trump's full backing and federal support, we are going to take California back and make it better than ever before!

"Thank you, Mr. President! This is the moment California has been waiting for!"

Hilton expanded on those thoughts in a statement provided to City News Service on Monday.

"I am honored to receive the endorsement of President Donald J. Trump," he said. "California should be the best place in the world to follow your dreams, raise a family, start and grow a business. We have everything we need to lead our country again. But after 16 years of one-party rule, we have the highest poverty rate, highest unemployment rate, and highest cost of living in America.

"I'm running to make our state Califordable: $3 gas, cut your electric bills in half, your first $100,000 tax free, a home you can afford to buy. We'll do that by putting common sense ahead of ideology, stopping fraud, waste, and abuse in our government, and cleaning up the corruption in Sacramento.

"I'm grateful for the president's support. Together, we can turn things around and make California truly Golden Again."

The 56-year-old Hilton is one of two Republicans among the 10 major candidates in the race, along with Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco.

The Democratic candidates are former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary and California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, former U.S. congresswoman Katie Porter, billionaire financier Tom Steyer, Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Dublin, state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, former LA Mayor and

Assembly Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa, and former state Controller Betty Yee. Bianco responded to the president's endorsement Monday in a lengthy Instagram video.

"President Trump made his endorsement. That's his decision, but this race is about the future of California, not any one endorsement," Bianco said. "For too long politicians and insiders from Sacramento to Washington have tried to pick our leaders for us. That's not leadership, that's a coronation, and it's exactly how we ended up with the failed leadership Californians are living with today. ... Quite frankly, I have repeatedly said that a Fox News host courting

a president's endorsement will never win in California," he added.

"For me, this has never been about being the top Republican. I have promised to be a governor for all Californians. ... This fight has never been about Democrats personally. It's about fighting to change a failed, progressive Democrat agenda that has made us less safe and our lives more expensive. It's about a lower cost of living, cheaper gas, lower rent and house prices, cheaper groceries, less taxes and holding thieves, murderers, rapists and child molesters accountable."

Multiple Democratic candidates also chimed in.

"By endorsing Steve

Hilton, Trump is telling Californians exactly what a Hilton governorship would look like: higher costs, a wrecked economy, and a Sacramento that does Trump's bidding, opens the door to ICE, and attacks our communities instead of defending them," Mahan said. "I'm running to do the opposite, to lower costs, invest in California's future, and stand up to Washington when it comes after us. The choice could not be more clear."

Steyer said: "California demands a leader who stands up to Trump and lowers costs, not one pushing the same failed MAGA agenda."

Porter issued the following statement on social media:

"If there was any doubt what this race is about, now it's certain: It's California values against MAGA. I'm running because voters are tired of the same old political games when the stakes are so much higher. They deserve a governor they can trust to fight for regular people, not just push policy agendas that only benefit corporate interests and the richest of the rich. I'm the only leading Democrat in this race who's never taken corporate PAC money or profited off corporate greed, and I've taken on Trump and his cronies and won."

Yee issued the following response: "Endorsed by one of the most divisive, unpopular and ineffective presidents in modern history? That's no badge of honor, it's more like a mark of shame. California voters are fed up with Trump's

HomeLight’s Top Agent Insights & Predictions Survey for 2026 was fielded between Dec. 2 and Dec. 9, 2025, through an online poll of over 850 real estate agents

across the country. Based on the survey, HomeLight has identified the top five home seller fears for 2026 and gathered expert tips on how you can overcome each one

to increase your chances of a successful home sale.

Fear No. 1: Selling for less than peak price

For many homeowners, the hardest part of selling

failed economic policies, reckless war and dangerous ICE raids, so we certainly don't want a new governor who follows Trump's old playbook.

"California voters are smarter than that. They deserve a governor who delivers results, protects rights and puts people first. That's the leadership I will provide."

Hilton was born in the United Kingdom and was an adviser to Prime Minister David Cameron before moving to California's Silicon Valley in 2012, becoming a U.S. citizen and teaching at Stanford University. Hilton hosted "The Next Revolution" on Fox News and has hosted a number of politically focused podcasts.

He is also the founder of Golden Together, a policy organization aimed at finding solutions for homelessness and other issues.

Hilton scheduled a news conference Tuesday morning near the steps of the state Capitol in Sacramento to discuss the endorsement and other issues.

Also Monday, CNN announced that a debate among some of the candidates will be held in Los Angeles on May 5. Details about the specific venue and who will participate will be released at a later date.

The top two vote getters in the June 2 primary, regardless of party affiliation, will square off in November's election to succeed Gov. Gavin Newsom, who is barred from running again due to term limits.

right now isn’t the transaction itself; it’s the emotional weight of feeling like they missed the market’s high point.

“Sellers worry less about the price itself and more about the feeling that they ‘missed

the peak,’” says Austin Moore, an agent in Longview, Texas. “It is an emotional hesitation. Even when their equity position is strong, they fear leaving money on the table compared to neighbors who sold at the top. The concern is not just price, it’s regret.”

Others are grappling with shifting conditions after the ultra-competitive seller’s markets of recent years.

“Sellers are concerned about getting top dollar in a declining market with fewer qualified buyers. But if a home sits on the market a long time, and a seller is reluctant to drop the price to gain more traction, they could be in a pickle,” explains Wanda Cox, an agent serving the Greater Tampa Bay, Florida, area. “Price drops may be necessary to win.”

While price growth has slowed in many areas, that doesn’t necessarily mean values and list prices are falling sharply. In fact, J.P. Morgan Global Research predicts that U.S. house prices will remain flat in 2026, with demand slightly improving.

In HomeLight’s survey, most agents agree that the market is normalizing and that realistic pricing is more important than ever.

How to overcome it

Rather than focusing on what your home might have sold for at the peak, shift your attention to:

• Your net proceeds today, including built-up equity.

• Localmarket momentum, not national headlines.

• Accurate pricing, which agents say is the No. 1 factor in how quickly a home sells.

Brandon King, an agent in Los Angeles, California, says that getting a peak price for your home starts with hiring an agent who employs advanced marketing strategies, offering you better options and modern tools.

“The reality is simple: Not all agents are equal. Choosing someone just because ‘you know them’ can leave tens of thousands of dollars on the table,” he cautions. “Technology, digital reach, and data-based targeting have changed how buyers discover homes. If an agent’s market-

ing approach hasn’t evolved, the seller pays the price.”

If you’re curious how much you might make from your home sale in 2026, many real estate companies offer free online net proceeds calculators.

Seller insight: A separate HomeLight survey found that the biggest mistake sellers make is overpricing.

Fear No. 2: Finding your next home after you sell

Selling is only half the journey. Many homeowners worry about what comes next, especially if they’re juggling two transactions at once or giving up a historically low mortgage rate.

“Sellers are worried about how long it will take to find the right buyer and what their own next move looks like,” says Robert Masoudpour, a Marietta, Georgia, agent with 24 years of experience. “Many want to sell but feel uncertain about timing, pricing, and giving up their low mortgage rate.”

Others fear getting stuck between homes.

“The combination of selling and buying at the same time creates fear of getting stuck with a home they don’t want,” says Jennifer Belmore, an agent in Vancouver, Washington.

These concerns are common but solvable with the right planning and expertise.

How to overcome it

In reality, today’s sellers have more flexibility than ever. Your options may include:

• Sale contingencies or rent-back agreements that give you extra time.

• Careful timing strategies guided by a knowledgeable agent.

• Modern buy-beforeyou-sell or bridge solutions that let you secure your next home first.

A buy-before-you-sell program lets you unlock equity in your current home, streamlining the entire buy-sell process. You can make a strong, noncontingent offer on your new home and only move once.

“Many sellers find using a buy-before-you-sell option is the easiest way to make a move that fits their goals for buying and selling a home in our current market,” says Ann Adams, an agent in Chandler,

Home seller fears

Arizona. “Better homes are available to pick from now, too, so you can find what you really want.”

With preparation, expert guidance, and innovative new programs, you can coordinate both moves smoothly and avoid that feeling of being in limbo.

Seller insight: If you want to avoid a double move or making a contingent offer on your new house, talk to your agent or lender about the different strategies to buy before you sell.

Fear No. 3: Affording the move to your next home

For homeowners with mortgage rates near 2% or 3%, today’s higher borrowing costs can make moving feel financially daunting.

“Many homeowners don’t want to give up a 2%–3% mortgage rate only to buy again at double the rate or more,” says Jim DeHaan, an agent in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Some also worry about paying more for a home that still needs updates.

“If they sell, they worry that they’ll have to pay more for a less updated home at a higher interest rate,” says Maggy Calhoun, an agent serving the Atlanta, Georgia, area.

In certain areas, rising taxes and homeowners insurance costs are adding to the hesitation.

How to overcome it

Even in a higher-rate environment, many sellers successfully make their next move by:

• Leveraging accumulated equity to reduce or eliminate a new mortgage.

• Downsizing or relocating to a more affordable area.

• Exploring concessions,

strengthen in 2026.

How to overcome it

Uncertainty doesn’t automatically mean it’s a bad time to sell. In fact:

• Buyer demand still exists, especially for well-priced and turnkey homes.

• Inventory is expected to rise, bringing more balanced conditions.

• Smart strategies matter more than perfect timing.

rate buydowns, or creative financing.

“Homeowners who are buying can use some of their current equity to buy points to lower their interest rate on the new purchase,” notes DeHaan.

“Or they can ask the seller [of the new home] to pay for an interest rate buydown.”

As a seller, you might consider offering to fund a rate buydown to attract more offers, especially in markets where rising property prices, elevated taxes, or home insurance costs are adding to buyer hesitation.

Seller insight: The HomeLight survey found that sellerfunded rate buydowns are one of the top incentives being offered in the current market.

Fear No. 4: Market uncertainty or economic fears

Economic headlines, interest rate changes, and recession talk have left many households cautious about making big decisions.

“Market uncertainty and economic fears are combining with the affordability concerns tied to moving elsewhere,” says Leila Torres Drewes, an agent on the Miranda Team in Burbank, California. “Add to this the fact that [for many], health insurance rates are doubling — people are hurting.”

Walt Reinhardt, an Austin, Texas agent, agrees. “[With] so much uncertainty in the economy, a lot of people are frozen and afraid to make a move.”

So what can you expect if you step into the market? Nearly half of survey agents (47%) predict that economic growth will remain slow throughout 2026, but they do not foresee a recession on the horizon. Another 20% of surveyed agents expect the economy will actually

going, not where you have been.”

How to overcome it

History shows that life timing usually matters more than market timing. You may benefit from selling when:

• Your financial goals make sense.

• Your next move is clear.

• Your local market conditions support a strong sale.

If a higher interest rate and monthly payments are playing a role in your doubts, Cypress, Texas, agent Herma Hayes reminds her clients that current interest rates are temporary, and the equity you have now can give you additional leverage.

“Don’t wait to move. Sell now and find the home you want. It is a buyer's market,” she advises. “You can refinance the loan later. You will have a large amount to put down [from your equity], so you may not need to borrow as much as you think.”

“The housing market is like the weather; can you control it?” says Miami, Florida, agent Hugo Barragan. “Therefore, be flexible, be open, follow your instincts, and enjoy all the amazing opportunities sitting out there waiting for you to show up.”

Focusing on your immediate home needs, your current assets, and what you can control (e.g., pricing, preparation, marketing) often matters more than predicting the economy.

Seller insight: Consult with an experienced local real estate agent or use a data-driven calculator to help you gauge the market before listing your home for sale.

Fear No. 5: Trying to time the market perfectly

Many sellers hesitate, hoping prices or rates will shift in their favor. The challenge? Perfect timing is nearly impossible, even for experienced professionals.

“Some sellers say, ‘I’ll wait for the market to go back up,’” says Claudia Marion, an agent in the Las Vegas, Nevada, area. “If you have been waiting the last two years, what will waiting longer do for you? Life changes. Look at the lifestyle, not the interest rate. Look at where you are

“It is nearly impossible to time the market,” says James Bowerman, an agent serving Pasadena, Maryland. “Those waiting for mortgage rates to drop will likely never move or end up in a competitive market with lower supply and higher home prices.”

“It’s important to let lifestyle needs guide your decisions rather than waiting for the ‘perfect' rate or the ‘perfect’ time,” says Janet McAllister, an agent in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with 20 years of experience. “Sellers should also recognize the real value their home has gained from years of equity growth, improvement, care, and enjoyment — its worth extends far beyond interestrate trends.”

Seller insight: Surveyed agents agree that a wellpriced, well-prepared, and well-cared-for home can succeed in almost any market cycle.

Partner with an expert to tackle your home seller fears

While fears about price, timing, affordability, and uncertainty are real, they’re also manageable with the right information and guidance. And with most agents expressing optimism about the 2026 market, many sellers may find new opportunities waiting on the other side of hesitation.

“Timing the market is always hard and often perilous, but moving makes the most sense when one’s life says it makes the most sense,” says David Worters, an agent in Raleigh, North Carolina. “Interest rates ebb and flow, as do prices, and I’m always a proponent of putting life first. When it’s time, it’s time.”

$64B deal proposed for Universal Music Group

UniversalMusic Group, which has its operational headquarters in Santa Monica, received a takeover proposal Tuesday valued at roughly $64 billion from billionaire investor Bill Ackman's Pershing Square.

The deal would combine Universal Music Group (UMG) with Pershing Square's acquisition vehicle in a transaction that could result in the company being listed on a U.S. stock exchange.

Universal Music Group, the world's largest music company, represents major artists including Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar and Sabrina Carpenter, and operates wellknown labels such as EMI and Island Records.

Sir Lucian Grainge, chairman and chief executive officer of Universal Music Group, was praised by Ackman for his leadership of the company.

"Sir Lucian Grainge and the company's management have done an excellent job nurturing and continuing to build a world-class artist roster and generating strong business performance," Ackman said in a statement. "However, UMG's stock price has languished due to a combination of issues that are unrelated to the performance of its music business and importantly, all of them can be addressed with this transaction."

Universal Music Group has not publicly responded to the proposal.

Ackman's firm already holds a stake in the company and has previously pushed for changes aimed at boosting its valuation, including a potential shift to a U.S. listing.

The proposed transaction would involve a mix of cash and stock and would need approval from UMG's board, major sharehold-

ers and regulators before it could be completed.

Ackman, speaking on a conference call Tuesday, said he recently met with Grainge to discuss the proposed deal and that Grainge encouraged him to proceed, according to a Reuters report.

He also proposed adding new board members, including former talent agent Michael Ovitz as chair, along with two representatives from Pershing Square, the report said.

Major labels are facing challenges, including slower growth in music streaming and ongoing debates over royalty payments from platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music.

The industry is also contending with the rise of artificial intelligence, including concerns over AI-generated music and deepfakes that mimic established artists.

Economic policies

in a statement to HeySoCal. com.

Among the accomplishments listed in the Bloomberg column, California is 12% of the U.S. population and drove more than 40% of growth in the U.S. stock market value.

“California accounted for 70 percentage points, more than triple No. 2 Washington (20 points), almost five times No. 3 Texas (15 points) and No. 4 New York (13 points) and almost 12 times No. 5 Ohio (6 points),” according to Bloomberg.

California-based companies spent $527 billion annually on acquisitions during Newsom’s tenure, almost three times the $179 billion spent annually in the 20 years prior to 2019, the column reported.

Talent hub California's "talent pipeline" was also a on the Bloomberg list.

“California's not-sosecret sauce happens to be the diversity between its citizens' ears instead of the fossil fuels generating the biggest share of Texas growth,” Winkler wrote.

The state's more than 600 colleges and universities make California peerless in the breadth of higher education availability compared with U.S. states or any of the world's developed economies.

California has the highest enrollment in higher education that creates a leading "talent pipeline," with one college or university for every 64,000 citizens, more than the UK and Germany, according to the governor's office.

The Bloomberg column also noted that California produces more engineers

than any other state, reporting that “investors in California are getting 11% of their return from the University of California, the Los Angeles Unified School District and California State University.”

Industry leaders According to Newsom, California’s industries are fueling the nation.

Bloomberg reported the industries contributing most to that state's economic performance.

Technology firms based in California lead the nationwide industry with 41 companies generating a 603% total return over the past decade — four times the gain of their global peers in the past two, three and five years.

California makes up 62% of all U.S. venture capital funding and did 31.5% of venture capital deals last year. “The runner-up in 2025 was New York with 13.3%. Massachusetts was next, just ahead of Texas — both below 6%,“ according to Bloomberg.

Health care contributed 52% to the state's GDP last year, "despite MAGA attacks on the industry," according to Newsom's office.

The column noted that “California's uninsured rate declined to a record-low 6.4% in 2023, the largest drop in the US, from more than 17% a decade ago, helped by the Covered California and Medi-Cal expanded coverage programs.”

Infrastructure and trade keep the U.S. economy moving due to the Newsom administration’s infrastructure investments, according to the governor's office.

The Port of Los Angeles is the nation's "gateway to

global trade, handling more than $300 billion of cargo annually,” Winkler wrote.

Clean energy and clean transportation are helping California maintain its future-facing dominance, officials said. The largest eight clean companies in the state have seen their stock value rise 56% on average since 2019, compared with 40% for their global counterparts.

“Their 7% average annual gain in revenue crushes the 5% global average," Winkler wrote. "California renewable energy companies will see 17% revenue growth in the coming year, more than doubling the 7% increase of global peers, according to analyst estimates.“

State officials called on the public to "Forget the political attacks. Industry knows its breadwinners are in the Golden State."

The Bloomberg column reported an exchange between Newsom and Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and a former Trump adviser.

“Even after Musk ... decried California as ‘a land of taxes, over-regulation and litigation’ when he moved the company’s headquarters along with its research and development leadership to Texas in 2021, the world’s richest person admitted a year later that Tesla couldn’t succeed without California-based engineers," Winkler wrote.

“'I will never forget' when Musk 'called me,'" Newsom told Bloomberg. “He said, 'I'm surprised you're picking up the phone. I may actually ask you for some help' because 'I can't find the talent in Texas. Don't say a word.’” Musk did not respond to a request for comment.

CASE NO.: MUNICIPAL CODE AMENDMENT 25-01 (MCA 25-01 (ORDINANCE NO. 1032)) AND ORDINANCE NO. 1033 - MCA 25-01 (Ordinance No. 1032) and Ordinance No. 1033 are City initiated amendments to the Rosemead Municipal Code (RMC) to update Chapter 17.54 (Wireless Telecommunication Facilities) and append Chapter 12.54 (Wireless Telecommunication Facilities in the Public Right-of-Way) to the RMC in order to bring the City’s municipal code up to compliance with Federal and State laws. The project, including the proposed amendments, conjointly regulate wireless telecommunications facilities on private property and within the right-of-way, establish fees for processing of wireless telecommunication facilities applications, and would allow greater flexibility and responsiveness to Federal and State laws while still preserving the City’s traditional land use authority to the maximum extent practicable.

On March 2, 2026, the Planning Commission conducted a duly noticed and advertised public hearing to receive oral and written testimony relative to MCA 25-01 (Ordinance No. 1032). After considering all public testimony, the Planning Commission adopted Planning Commission Resolution 26-01 and recommended that the City Council adopt Ordinance No. 1032 for the approval of MCA 25-01.

ENVIRONMENTAL DETERMINATION: MCA 25-01 (Ordinance No. 1032) and Ordinance No. 1033 are not subject to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) pursuant to Sections 15060(c)(2) (the activity will not result in a direct or reasonably foreseeable indirect physical change in the environment) and 15060(c)(3) (the activity is not a project as defined in Section 15378) of the CEQA Guidelines, California Code of Regulations, Title 14, Chapter 3, because the ordinances have no potential for resulting in physical change to the environment, directly or indirectly.

Pursuant to Government Code Section 65009(b), if this matter is subsequently challenged in court, the challenge may be limited to only those issues raised at the public hearing described in this notice or in written correspondence delivered to the City of Rosemead at, or prior to, the public hearing.

For further details on this proposal or to review pertinent information, please contact Richard Marshalian, Planning and Economic Development Manager, at (626) 569-2143 or rmarshalian@rosemeadca. gov. In addition, the City Council Agenda and Staff Report will be available on the City’s website under “Meeting and Agenda” (www.rosemeadca.gov) at least 72 hours in advance of the public hearing. Any person interested in the above proceedings may appear at the time and place indicated above to testify in support of, or in opposition to, the item(s) indicated in this notice.

Feds fund firefighter training center in Arcadia

As "fire season" increasingly seems more like a year-round risk, the Arcadia Fire Department and the U.S. Forest Service have established a local Joint Fire Training Center to improve preparedness and meet the growing need for regional training facilities, officials said Thursday.

The facility, funded with a $2 million federal grant, will occupy about 30,000 square feet of land at the Angeles National Forest Headquarters adjacent to the 210 Freeway. Plans call for a four-story training tower with space for live-fire training and classrooms. The Joint Training Center will also include residential simulation areas within the tower, allowing firefighters to practice hose deployment, ladder operations, rappelling, roof operations and high-angle rescue exercises.

A significant portion of Arcadia is foothill terrain that has repeatedly faced the threat of fast-moving wild-

fires, most recently during the 2025 Eaton Canyon and 2020 Bobcat blazes.

“After the devastating Bobcat and Eaton fires, it was clear that wildfire preparedness must continue to evolve," Mayor Eileen Wang, said in a statement.

She added that Chu "recognized the regional benefit of this project and advocated tirelessly to secure the funding that will make this facility a reality.

The new Joint Fire Training Center not only strengthens Arcadia, but all the neighboring communities along the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, helping first responders meet future wildfire threats with greater readiness and resilience.”

Officials said the center's aim will be to strengthen interagency emergency response and improve wildfire preparedness throughout the region. The project was made possible through a $2 million grant secured by Rep. Judy Chu, D-Pasadena.

While both the Forest Service and AFD pursued funding in 2024, federal budget delays postponed the funding until earlier this year.

“Ensuring our communities are prepared for and protected from natural disasters is one of my top priorities in Congress. From the Bobcat Fire in 2020 to the recent Eaton Fire that destroyed nearly 6,000 homes and took 19 lives, our region has seen firsthand how devastating these disasters can be,” Chu said in a statement. “Arcadia sits along the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, which puts the entire community at a higher risk from fast-moving wildfires. That’s why I was so proud to secure $2 million in federal funding for a new Joint Fire Training Center in Arcadia. Through this partnership between the Arcadia Fire Department and the U.S. Forest Service, firefighters will receive essential regional training, improve coordination between agencies, and

become better equipped to protect families across the San Gabriel Valley for years to come.”

The federal funding will benefit Arcadia, the U.S. Forest Service and neighboring communities throughout the San Gabriel Valley that face hazardous wildfire conditions, officials said.

“The Joint Training

Center project is an example of the continued partnership and collaboration between the U.S. Forest Service and the City of Arcadia that will serve our firefighters and the people of our local foothills for years to come," Robert Garcia, USFS Angeles National Forest Fire Chief, said in a statement.

With funding in place,

the next phase of the project includes a detailed site assessment and design process, according to the city. Although the project was last estimated at $2.7 million, rising construction costs and inflation may require additional resources. Officials said updates on the project will be on the city’s website ArcadiaCA.gov.

LA County board presses for stepped-up enforcement of hospice, home care fraud

The Los Angeles County BoardofSupervisors directed its staff Tuesday to develop recommendations aimed at improving coordination with other agencies to crack down on home health and hospice fraud.

"Fraud in home health and hospice care is not just a financial crime — it is a direct threat to the health and safety of some of our most vulnerable residents," Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath said in a statement after the board's unanimous vote. "Los Angeles County is doing our part and will not allow bad actors to exploit gaps in oversight while patients and families are put at risk. Stronger coordination and accountability across every level of government is

essential to protect people and restore trust in these critical services."

According to Horvath's office, there are more than 4,700 home health and hospice care facilities operating in the county, at a time when fraud by some operators has been rising — such as billing federal agencies for care that was never provided, or using stolen identities to enroll patients.

Last week, federal authorities in Los Angeles announced charges against 15 people suspected of health care fraud, including operating sham hospice facilities that pay people without terminal illnesses to pose as dying Medicare beneficiaries.

The motion approved by the Board of Supervisors

Tuesday directs the county Department of Public Health to report back to the board with recommendations for improving coordination with local, state and federal agencies in investigating fraud cases. It also

urges the state and federal government to strengthen oversight of such facilities and increase enforcement efforts, while boosting accountability for private accrediting organizations that are responsible for

monitoring many providers.

"Hospice and home health care exist to serve our most vulnerable residents, so fraud in these industries is a profound betrayal of their trust,"

Supervisor Kathryn Barger said in a statement. "Los Angeles County cannot stand by while unscrupulous individuals exploit any gaps between local, state, and federal oversight. We must work toward stronger coordination and accountability at every level of government to protect the patients and families who depend on these critical services."

In announcing the federal charges against 15 people last week, First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli blasted state offi-

cials — notably Gov. Gavin Newsom for reigning over a "kingdom of fraud" in California in health-industry fraud, saying the state refuses to adopt emergency regulations to root out health care lawbreakers.

Newsom shot back that new hospice licenses in the state were banned in 2021, and at least 280 licenses have been revoked in the last two years. He said more than 100 criminal cases dealing with hospice fraud have been filed by state prosecutors, but noted that much of the fraud involves federal programs.

"Glad to see the feds finally taking seriously the fraud in the programs they themselves manage ... only 15 months after Trump took office," Newsom wrote on social media.

AROUND TOWN

Around town: Taste of La Salle

Los Angeles Unified School District offi-

cials and three labor unions are set to meet this week for newly scheduled bargaining sessions as pressure builds to reach an agreement before a possible strike that is scheduled to begin April 14, officials announced Tuesday.

If the parties are unable to reach an agreement, three major unions representing teachers, non-teaching staff and administrators such as principals and assistant principals are prepared to walkout next Tuesday, they said.

Even if two of the three unions reach a compromise, it would still be impossible for the district to keep all campuses open, the Los Angeles Times reported.

United Teachers Los Angeles, the union representing LAUSD educators, canceled a news conference scheduled for Tuesday morning, explaining that the unions will meet with LAUSD representatives on Wednesday.

"Educators, school staff and administrators across Los Angeles are united and ready to act next week if necessary. With pressure escalating, our classrooms and students can't wait any longer for the resources and support they deserve," UTLA President Cecily Myart-Cruz said in a statement. "While the past

Talks continue as looming strike could disrupt LAUSD

district proposals have fallen short, the upcoming session provides an opportunity for meaningful solutions that respect educators, support student learning, and may avert a strike."

An LAUSD spokesperson confirmed that negotiations are ongoing, and the district remains committed to reaching an agreement that supports employees while also protecting the longterm financial stability of the district.

LAUSD officials told The Times that they're encouraging families to plan ahead in the event that negotiations fall through, noting that parents should ensure students have access to Schoology, the district's online learning system. The district also told The Times that parents should prepare for alternative child-care and food options for weekday breakfasts and lunches.

The district has reached an agreement with five of its eight labor partners, and is willing to work around the clock to come to an agreement with teachers, administrators and service workers, according to the LAUSD spokesperson.

During spring break last week, the LAUSD met with UTLA and Associated Administrators of Los Angeles/Teamsters 2010, and was able to come to an agreement with the Los

Angeles/Orange Counties Building and Construction Trades Council.

For the teachers, district officials offered a one-time bonus of 3% for the current school year, followed by a permanent salary increase of 4% starting July 1, a subsequent 4% increase beginning Jan. 1, 2027, and 2% more on Jan. 1, 2028, according to The Times. Delays in raises could save the district money.

UTLA is seeking a 13% increase of a starting teacher's salary from $68,695 to $77,670. Additionally, the union is calling for significant increases to the automatic raises teachers receive based on experience and education credentials.

The LAUSD said it had proposed a combination of salary increases, caseload reductions and updates on prior proposals. On April 2, the LAUSD met with AALA/Teamsters Unit J and proposed a 10% wage increase over 3 years. District officials noted they met again with AALA on Monday.

"Our proposals to UTLA alone have an ongoing cost of $480M and reflect significant increases over prior proposals, demonstrating the district's good faith efforts toward reaching agreements," the LAUSD said in a statement.

Recently, UTLA and LAUSD concluded fact-find-

ing, a process in which an independent three-person panel reviews finances and assists with negotiations. This step is also necessary for unions to continue with their strike.

The panel usually consists of three outsiders, but this time there was just one. LAUSD and the unions decided to choose their own lead negotiator for the panel, according to The Times.

All three unions say the district has the money to meet their demands, pointing to a $5 billion reserve and other factors.

District officials contend there is ongoing deficit spending that will impact their budget for several years.

The fact finding concluded that the LAUSD made an offer they could afford. It

The Los Angeles Philharmonic announced Tuesday that 29-yearold German conductor Anna Handler will serve as conductor-in-residence beginning with the 2026-27 season.

also acknowledged that the district's budget is complex and verifying financial information would take considerable time and effort.

Union representatives criticized the results of the fact-finding, arguing it required a deep dive to determine whether the LAUSD could meet their demands. The district said it has repeatedly offered to participate in an independent financial review, but UTLA has declined the offer.

The LAUSD is also in negotiations with SEIU Local 99 Education Workers United, a union representing more than 30,000 district employees such as teacher aides, bus drivers and other non-teacher positions. The district has offered a 13% salary increase over three

years, but the union has demanded more.

Local 99 is seeking more stable work schedules, and to prevent recently announced layoffs to some of its members. The LAUSD's Board of Education had approved about 700 layoffs in a bid to address budget issues.

Meanwhile, AALA/Teamsters 2010, representing principals and administrators with teaching credentials, is seeking a 7% salary increase for the current school year, followed by a 6% increase for the next school year, according to The Times. The LAUSD has offered a 4% increase instead, followed by another 4% in 2027. The groups are expected to meet later this week to negotiate.

Handler's responsibilities will include an annual three-week commitment at Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Hollywood Bowl and Beckmen YOLA Center, leading the LA Phil and conducting an annual project with Youth Orchestra Los Angeles. She will also curate and perform on keyboards in a chamber music program that will highlight Beethoven and include a collaboration with Luna Lab.

ship model that reflects artistic excellence, expansive and innovative programming and our dedication to the communities we serve."

"Anna is such a talent on the podium, and her artistry and musical ideas have cultivated a deep connection with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, galvanizing the musicians and supporting the orchestra's continued artistic evolution," LA Phil President and CEO Kim Noltem said. "Her work furthers our broader vision of a leader-

She will also serve as Artist-in-Residence at Beethoven-Haus Bonn during

its 2026/27 season, which will mark the 200th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven's death.

"I feel very honored to return to the LA Phil as conductor-in-residence," Handler said. "I have long admired the LA Phil as one of the most dynamic and innovative orchestras in the world. My time as a Dudamel Fellow was profoundly formative, and it is especially meaningful to deepen this relationship with an orchestra that has played such an important

role in my artistic journey. I look forward to collaborating with these remarkable musicians, creating new concert experiences and engaging with audiences across Los Angeles."

Handler will conduct the orchestra in a series of performances in the coming year, including "Beethoven's Fifth" on Aug. 25 at the Hollywood Bowl, "Minimalist Icons: Philip Glass" on March 12-13, 2027, and a program featuring John Williams' "Piano Concerto"

and Mahler's "Symphony No. 1," "Titan," on May 27-28 and May 30, 2027, at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

"One of my greatest joys has been to watch our Dudamel Fellows continue to rise and share their incredible musical talents across the globe. Anna — with her boundless skill, curiosity, passion, and inspiration — is a perfect example, and I am so proud to welcome her back to our LA Phil family in this new capacity," Dudamel said.

Pasadena Village distributes $450K to older survivors of Eaton Fire

Older adults who lost possessions and housing stability as a result of the Eaton Fire last year began receiving financial help Friday through a grant partnership between the California Community Foundation and a local housing community.

Pasadena Village started distributing a $450,000 award from the Foundation to provide direct cash assistance to wildfire survivors in Altadena and Pasadena, grant program organizers announced.

Based upon the organization's "peer-to-peer support model," Pasadena Village management appointed a recovery team of nine older adults who designed and carried out an equitable process to distribute the grant money, program organizers said. In February, the team approved grants for 61 people age 55 and older who were

still displaced by the Eaton Fire, with grants ranging from $5,000 to $8,175.

More than 40 of recipients identify as Black or African American, according to Pasadena Village. Fiftytwo lost their primary residence entirely, while nine are still waiting to return to homes severely damaged by smoke and ash.

John Jackson, an 80-yearold Altadena resident, lost the home where he had lived for 50 years. The Eaton Fire also took the outdoor kitchen where he gathered with friends, furniture he crafted by hand and a workshop filled with woodworking tools — none of which were insured.

“The Village has offered me unbelievable support,” Jackson said. “While most people needed computers and electronics, I needed saws and hand and power tools to rebuild my storage shed.”

With his grant assistance, Jackson plans to rebuild his home and workshop and replace essential tools such as a table saw, router and planer. He also hopes to rebuild fencing and restore the patio. Woodworking is more than a hobby for Jackson, it’s a source of purpose and a way to rebuild what insurance can't replace, from shelving and drawers to furniture.

Juanita, an 84-year-old Altadena resident, lost her family’s home of 52 years, along with everything in it and two cars. The funding she received will help pay rebuilding expenses, furnishings and basic needs as she and her family work toward returning home.

“We just need help to sustain ourselves financially until we can get back home,” she said in a statement.

“Pasadena Village is deeply grateful to the California Community Foundation for standing with our community in this moment of need,” Katie Brandon, executive director of Pasadena Village, said in a statement. “Many older adults affected by the wildfires lost not only their homes, but their stability. This funding is

Artemis II

crew member on the ISS.

He also was a test pilot at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake in the Mojave Desert and earned a master's degree from Air University at Edwards Air Force Base.

Glover's crewmates are Commander Reid Wiseman and mission specialists Christina Hammock Koch and Jeremy Hansen, a Canadian Space Agency astronaut.

"As we surpass the furthest distance humans have ever traveled from planet Earth, we do so in honoring the extraordinary efforts and feats of our predecessors in human space exploration," Hansen told mission control Monday. "We will continue our journey even further into space before Mother Earth succeeds in pulling us back to everything that we hold dear. But we, most importantly, choose this moment to challenge this generation and the next to make sure this record is not long-lived."

The crew also suggested that an unnamed lunar crater be named in tribute to the

mission commander's late wife Carroll Wiseman.

"It's a bright spot on the moon, and we would like to call that Carroll," Hansen said.

They named another crater after their Orion spacecraft that's called Integrity.

During the flyby, Artemis II astronauts took photos of the lunar surface and recorded observations while briefly losing contact with mission control for about 40 minutes as Integrity moved behind the moon. The crew's fleet of digital cameras captured high-resolution images of lunar features that humans have never directly seen, NASA officials said.

On Friday, NASA released high-resolution images of Earth captured by the crew after the spacecraft completed a key engine burn placing it on a trajectory toward the moon.

Astronauts said they were "glued to the windows" taking photos of Earth as it receded into the distance, with Hansen describing "a beauti-

ful view of the dark side of the Earth, lit by the moon."

Wiseman later asked mission control how to clean the spacecraft's windows after the earthward gazing left the glass smudged. He added that taking pictures of the Earth from deep space turned out to be a challenge.

"It's like walking out back at your house, trying to take a picture of the moon," he told mission control. "That's what it feels like right now."

NASA's Deep Space

Network, which Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena manages, is involved in the communications between Artemis II and mission control.

“At NASA, we dare to reach higher, explore farther, and achieve the impossible. That’s embodied perfectly by our Artemis II astronauts — Reid, Victor, Christina, and Jeremy," Lori Glaze, acting associate administrator for NASA's Exploration Systems Development Mission Direc-

helping older survivors move forward and know that they are supported, and not forgotten, as they rebuild their lives.”

The Eaton Fire caused 19 deaths, mostly in Altadena, and destroyed thousands of structures amid severe Santa Ana winds in January 2025.

More information is available from PasadenaVillage.org or by calling 626-765-6037.

In addition to financial assistance, Pasadena Village continues to connect older adults with each other and with resources as they navigate the long road to recovery. Community representatives said a priority is to help ensure survivors do not face the aftermath of the Eaton Fire alone.

torate, said in a statement. "They are charting new frontiers for all humanity. Their dedication is about more than breaking records — it’s fueling our hope for a bold future. Their mission is carrying our promise to return to the Moon’s surface, this time to stay as we establish a Moon Base.”

Officials expect Artemis III to launch sometime next year to test lunar landers being developed by Hawthorne-based SpaceX and Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin.

In early 2028, Artemis IV is expected to launch with the goal of astronauts returning to the moon's surface via a lunar lander.

Artemis V, another lunar surface mission, is expected in late 2028, with subsequent missions planned about once each year.

The first humans on the moon were U.S. astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on July 20, 1969, during the Apollo 11 mission. A total of 12 men have walked on the moon, the last being Apollo

17 astronaut Gene Cernan in December 1972.

The current mission's progress is charted online at nasa.gov/artemis-ii.

Satellite launch

Another Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base near Lompoc is set for Friday after the latest launch sent eye-catching visuals across the sky visible from the Los Angeles area to Central California.

The rocket carrying 25 Starlink satellites launched at 7:50 p.m. Monday, the first flight for the first-stage booster supporting the mission, SpaceX announced. This was the first flight for the Stage 1 booster supporting the mission. Following separation, the first stage landed on the Of Course I Still Love You droneship stationed in the Pacific Ocean.

Unfavorable conditions postponed the launch Sunday. The launch scheduled for Friday will also carry 25 Starlink satellites and will be the 32nd flight for its Stage 1 booster.
