Relay for Life of Monrovia launches 24 hour Event this Saturday
379 walkers and 45 teams to raise funds for American Cancer Society
On Saturday and Sunday, June 4 and 5, the Monrovia community will come together for a 24 hour, family friendly fundraising event that celebrates those who have battled cancer, remembers loved ones lost, and teams up to fight back. Teams will gather at 11 a.m. Saturday at Recreation Park 740 East Olive Avenue, Monrovia, for the overnight relay walk. The event ends at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Proceeds will support the American Cancer Society’s research, education,
advocacy and services for patients and families. This year’s teams have raised over $45,600 to date. Supporters can sign up, donate or dedicate luminaria for the event at http://relayforlife.org/ monroviaca. Activities will include a 24 hour campout, kids’ activities, DJ and live entertainment, food, games, contests and prizes. An evening highlight will be the Luminaria Ceremony, held to honor cancer survivors and
remember those who lost their battles. The luminaria, placed along the track, are left burning through the night. The City of Monrovia is the Platinum level sponsor of the event. the department, recently announced his intent to retire this coming July. His father, Tom Moore, served as assistant fire chief in Pasadena. Two of Kevin’s brothers currently work for the Vernon Fire Department. As a senior fire engineer, Moore was responsible for maintaining and driving fire apparatus, ensuring his crew arrived to incidents safely. His responsibilities also included operating the fire engine pump and fire truck aerial ladder during fire and rescue situations. As a member of the Regional Task Force Urban Search & Rescue Team, Moore worked out
of Station 32, 2424 E. Villa St., for more than 10 years. “Kevin was known as a gentle giant; he sported a large stature and had a sincere, gentle demeanor,” said Pasadena Fire Chief Dennis Downs. “We just returned from an annual motorcycle ride where Kevin shared that he was looking forward to retirement and spending time with his kids.” Moore is survived by his father, his wife Connie, two teenage children, six brothers and one sister. He was a long-time resident of Upland. Pasadena Fire Station flags will fly at half-staff until Moore’s burial.

BY DOROTHY DENNE I received an e-mail about the history of aprons. It said to pass it on to those who might not remember aprons or maybe not even know what aprons are. (Are there really such poor souls?) Well, I do know and remember. So, I’ve mixed in some of my 1930s and ‘40s, memories of my Mom’s and Aunt Jessie’s aprons. I share them with you, whichever category you’re in. The principal use of Mom’s and Aunt Jessie’s apron was to protect the dress underneath, because they each only had a few. It was easier to wash aprons than dresses and they used less material. Also, the apron served as a handy potholder
for removing hot pans from the oven. (The oven, by the way, had no thermostat and it was fueled by wood.) The apron was wonderful for drying children’s tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears. From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold, the wearer would pull it up and wrap it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the
hulls. In the Fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Mom or Aunt Jessie walked out onto the porch, rang the big dinner bell, waved her apron and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner (You have to know, dinner was the mid-day meal. In Mom’s and Aunt Jessie’s era we ate Breakfast in the morning, Dinner at mid-day and Supper in the evening.) It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that ‘old-time apron’ that served so many purposes. We would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron. I don’t think I ever caught anything from an apron but love!!!

BY SUSAN MOTANDER It takes passion to make a difference and Michael Cusick is passionate about music. He may not be pursuing his passion professionally, but he sill cares about his original love. When Cusick realized that the new Monrovia Public Library had very few materials for music education, he didn’t complain as others might do. He also did not just shrug it off and assume there was nothing he could do by himself.
Cusick found something to do. He discovered that his alma mater, the Berklee College of Music had grant opportunities. He wrote the grant application himself. If you have never written one, I can assure you it is not an easy task. Now as the result of this one person perceiving a problem, finding a solution and pursuing it, the Library has a new collection of CDs and DVDs pertaining to music education.
Cusick’s dedication will not stop with the receipt of the materials. He has also committed to working with the schools and the community to make everyone aware of the existence of the CDs and DVDs. As part of the grant he has promised to dedicate at least 50 hours to the project, and this on top of his regular work. Who says one person cannot make a difference?

gram in the county, and has become a national model. He asks his subjects to NOT smile when he photographs them for the painting. The reason is bring forth the essence and not the forced smile so often seen in photographs. Population is a unique
gathering of over 200 portraits of Southern California residents painted over the past four years by Pasadena artist Ray Turner. Turner has spent the spring of 2011 painting dozens of individuals to represent the rich, diverse commu-
nity of Long Beach, including elected officials, philanthropists, artists and a host of Long Beach citizens encountered in our everyday lives. The exhibit also will feature some prominent Pasadena residents with whom Turner has spent many hours. Turner has focused his career on the human face with the objective of creating a narrative between the viewer and the subject. Turner paints his subjects from photographs he has taken with a concentration on their essence as opposed to their features. Rather than a photographic survey, Turner’s expressionistic portraits reveal the psychological drama and emotional fabric, intrinsic and specific to Long Beach and Pasadena. Friend and fellow artist Frank Gallagher (also know as the Poet of Pots) of All Industrial Arts in San Marino told Beacon Media “Ray Turner is going to be big, - very big- one of the most important artists of this century. You simply have to see his work and experience his passion for portraits.” We
concur. Thank you Frank. The artist paints each portrait directly on ¼ inch or thicker glass with strong brushstrokes that come from a highly trained eye. The transparency of the glass creates a surface which reflects the viewer and the environment, while its materiality speaks to the inner fragility. We recently sat down with Turner at his studio in Pasadena and got a glimpse of what will undoubtedly become some of the most important works of his career. The happy, charming and eloquent Turner is also humble man who’s sensitive and yet strong paint strokes confirm the passion with which he paints his portraits. Flux plays an integral role in the conceptual underpinnings of Ray Turner’s work according to a press release issue by Long Beach Museum of Art . “ As these works travel and are exhibited to nationwide audiences and locations, local residents are integrated into the body of work adding new layers to the growing “Population”.

Assembly Passes Portantino’s Bill to Bring Goals, Objectives and Accountabilty Standards to California’s Public Universities and Colleges Continuing his fight for reform and accountability, Assemblymember Anthony Portantino’s (D-La Cañada Flintridge) Higher Education Accountability bill has been approved by the State Assembly. AB 2 establishes a report card on public colleges and universities that would streamline information on the successes or deficiencies of the state’s three higher

The bill would provide more information for parents, students, faculty and administrators at the University of California, California State University and the California Community Colleges. This is Assemblymember Portantino’s latest attempt at higher education accountability, he introduced similar legislation last year. “It is imperative that during these tough economic
times we maximize our limited resources,” explained Assemblymember Portantino. “Goals, objectives and accountability standards for our three higher education segments are a great place to put this concept into practice. For most students and their families, the decision on where to go to college is one of the most important choices they will make in their lifetime. We owe it to them to have
valid data that gives them confidence in our world class colleges and universities.” AB 2 provides a common language to compare success rates among the various public colleges and universities. The legislation has the backing of all three public university systems as well as strong, bi-partisan support. AB 2 will be heard later this summer in the Senate.

The popular Citizen Journalism Speaker Series concludes next Tuesday when local publisher Susan Henerson takes the stage to discuss her role at The Mountain Views News. Always keenly concerned about the quality of life in the community surrounding her, she has served on dozens of Boards and
led a variety of community organizations. She has been awarded numerous awards and honors including recognition from the California Assembly for her work with Senior Housing and Community Development while living in Northern California. At present, she is the President of the Sierra Madre Kiwanis Club and on the Board of Directors of the Sierra Madre Chamber of Commerce and the Foothill Creative Arts Group. Susan Henderson has been a published author for over ten years, writing columns and articles on golf and life in such publications as the Los Angeles Sentinel and Core Media Publications, The Sierra Madre, Arcadia and Monrovia Weekly and The Pasadena Independent.
In 2006, along with a partner, she started the Mt. Wilson Observer, a weekly publication focused on community news and events. That venture ended less than a year later. In 2007, she branched out on her own and established Grace Lorraine Publications, Inc. which acquired the MVNews Magazine. She then created what is now known as The Mountain Views News, a weekly community newspaper that serves Sierra Madre, Pasadena, Altadena, Arcadia, Monrovia and Duarte. Dreier Votes for Defense Authorization Measure Congressman David Dreier (R-CA) voted today in support of H.R. 1540, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012. This bill authorizes continued funding for our troops deployed abroad. H.R. 1540, which ensures American troops overseas in Afghanistan, Iraq and around the world have the equipment, resources, and training they need to successfully complete their missions and return home safely, was approved with overwhelming bipartisan support 322-96. “Our brave men and
women in uniform serving and defending us at home and abroad deserve the full backing of Congress and the American people,” Dreier said. “This bipartisan legislation ensures that our troops and their families have the equipment, resources, training, and time they need to successfully complete their missions and return home.” H.R. 1540 authorizes $553 billion for the Department of Defense’s base budget, including $119 billion for overseas contingency operations. The measure also authorizes re-
sources and equipment to protect our troops, including $2.8 billion to develop technologies to defeat improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and $3.2 billion for Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles. In addition, H.R. 1540 authorizes a 1.6 percent pay increase for Armed Forces personnel, ensures that troops returning from deployment have sufficient time at home and enhances treatment for mental health and traumatic brain injuries.
Monrovia Interim Police Chief Jim Hunt Offers Residents Suggestions on How to Minimize Vehicle Burglaries In last week’s edition of the Monrovia Weekly, a Monrovia resident who was the victim of a vehicle burglary made some statements about police staffing levels for Patrol in the City of Monrovia. I am writing this letter to better inform the Monrovia Weekly readers about some questions raised in the article regarding Monrovia Police Department staffing levels and to pass on some information to help you minimize your risk of becoming the victim of a vehicle burglary. The article was about a Monrovia resident who had her car broken into and her laptop computer, which was in the vehicle, was stolen. The victim stated in the article that police officer staffing levels for Patrol are down in Monrovia due to the recession. This is not true. 15 years ago, the Monrovia Police Department established recommended staffing levels for the number of officers we have in the field. Those recommended staffing levels are based on the number of calls for service the department handles and the population of our city. The department’s staffing level per population and call volume is consistent with or better than other cities in the San Gabriel Valley because the City is committed to providing a high level of service to our citizens. We have continued to maintain our recommended staffing levels in Patrol, despite budget cutbacks due to the recession. Crime has gone down over the last year in the City of Monrovia. Despite this
fact, our city, like any city in our area, has citizens victimized by vehicle burglars. Vehicle burglary and theft from vehicles are common crimes, and usually the thieves are opportunists looking for easy targets to steal valuables. The vast majority of thefts from vehicles reported in the City of Monrovia are from vehicles that were not locked or vehicles where valuables were left visible inside the vehicle. Thieves walk the streets and parking lots of the City, both during the day and at night, looking inside cars for valuables and checking the doors of vehicles to see if they are unlocked. If you see someone looking into parked vehicles or checking the door handles on vehicles, please immediately report this suspicious activity to the police department. Citizens reporting this type of suspicious behavior are our best resource for identifying and apprehending these criminals. Here are some tips to help minimize your chances of becoming the next victim of a vehicle burglary: Never leave valuables in your vehicle and especially not visible in the vehicle. Do not leave your vehicle unlocked. It only takes a few seconds for a thief to steal items from an unlocked vehicle, even if those items are in the trunk. Do not leave the cradles that hold GPS units, cell phones or their charging cords visible in the vehicle. These are hints to thieves that a phone or GPS unit might be somewhere in the vehicle. Do not assume that hid-
ing valuables under an item of clothing on the floorboard of your vehicle will deter a thief. Clothing on a floorboard of a vehicle may cause a thief to break in to see what might be hidden underneath. If you are shopping at a large shopping mall and you need to put some of the items you have purchased in your vehicle and then continue shopping, place the items in the trunk of your vehicle, get into the vehicle and drive to another location in the parking lot and then return to your shopping. Thieves will often observe activity in a shopping mall parking lot to look for vehicles they can steal valuables from. Please report suspicious activity to the police. The Arcadia American Little League Angels Complete a Memorable Season Little League Angels Beat Pirates 4 to 1 in Final Game
T
he Arcadia American Little League Angels completed a memorable season May 21 by defeating the Pirates, 4-1, at Windsor Field to win the Prep Division Championship of the annual AALLArcadia National Little League playoff tournament for players ages 6-9. The Angels were led by Michael Gruppie, who helped pitch and bat the Halos to the title. In the championship game, he was the winning pitcher, allowing no runs and no hits while striking out eight batters in three scoreless innings of relief of starter Matt McIntire, who also struck out eight in three innings. Gruppie was also 2 for 2 at the plate, and scored the winning run after hitting a triple to lead off the fifth inning when the Angels scored three times
to break a 1-1 tie. Catcher Will Covey had the gamewinning run batted in. Winning the tournament did not come easy for the Angels, who earned a berth in the title game only after winning the loser’s bracket and playing six games in 12 days going into the final. Pitching was the key for the champions, as they allowed no more than three runs in any tournament game, no-hit and shut out one opponent and held three teams, including the hard-hitting Pirates, to a single run. Gruppie pitched in all but one of the Angels’ playoff games during the twoweek, double elimination tournament and did not allow a run in 15 1/3 innings. McIntire earned two key playoff wins including a

tial tying run at
third base. First baseman Nick Patton and outfielder Tommy Traver also had key fifth-inning RBIs for the Angels in the title game. That provided the Angels, who out-hit the Pirates, 8-3 , their ultimate threerun margin of victory. Covey’s RBI was his second of the game and gave the Angels their first lead since the first inning when he scored third baseman Lucas Conley on another ground out. The Pirates came right back with a run in the bottom of the first and the score remained tied until the Angels’ three-run rally in the fifth. The Angels were managed by Don McIntire and coached by Guy Gruppie,
Sr., Sam Salazar, Scott Conley and A.K. Traver. The other members of the championship team are Sammy Campagna, Jese Chen, Ziran Gomez, Guy Gruppie, Jr., Jackson Hisey, Deven Salazar and Rene Urrea. The Pirates, managed by Mike Rizzo and coached by Steve Gewecke, were led Saturday by Kellen Gewecke, who had two hits including a double, and Ryan Rizzo, who had the team’s other hit. The Pirates had easily advanced to the tournament final by winning three straight games behind the strong play of Gewecke, Rizzo, Kevin Lima, Brandon Williams and Drake Jackson. Williams homered twice, and Jackson once, in the Pirates” victory over the AALL A’s in the winner’s bracket semifinal that earned the Pirates a berth in the championship.

The Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial beginning of the summer season. It is the time when wearing white shoes is suddenly acceptable. In Monrovia it is the time for two annual events: the Immaculate Conception Fiesta and the Allied Veterans Council’s ceremony at Live Oak Memorial Park. Two more diverse events are hard to imag-
ine. The IC Fiesta is gaiety and family fun, a carnival with music and food and beer. The remembrance ceremony at the cemetery is more solemn. Perhaps my favorite day of the fiesta every year is Sunday. During that afternoon, the mariachis and folklorico dancers take center stage. This year was no exception. The crowds hearts are stolen every year

by the youngest dancers especially some of the little boys some of whom look they have been forced into the routines by older siblings. And the tiniest girls are just charming as they to emulate their older counterparts. As always the food at the fiesta is as varied as the members of the parish. Erica Tavera has been named Alverno High School Valedictorian for the Class of 2011. Erica has chosen to attend Yale. Karineh Minissian, Alverno’s 2011 Salutatorian, has chosen to attend UC Berkeley. Between the two of them, these young women were accepted to a variety of different colleges, but Yale and UC Berkeley offered the programs and majors they wanted with the campus environments they were looking for.
Erica will major in Biomedical Engineering at Yale. Erica is an AP Scholar, a member of the National Honor Society and the President of the National Honor Society, a member of the California Scholarship Federation, and she also served as the Supreme Court Chief Justice at Alverno. “It is such an honor to represent my class at graduation,” she says. “I’m so blessed to be in a class with so many inspiring girls who each
have so much going for them. I can’t wait to see where everyone ends up in 10 years.” Erica attended La Canada Elementary School in Pasadena. Salutatorian Karineh Minissian will attend UC Berkeley with a double major in Political Science and International Relations. Karineh is a member of the California Scholarship Federation and the National Honor Society. She was on ASU for two years serving as the Secretary of International Affairs and she was an ambassador for the Tournament of Roses. She came to Alverno from Marshall Fundamental Elementary School in Pasadena. “Coming from a public school, I really didn’t know anyone and I was astounded at how welcoming and friendly everyone was,” she says. “If it wasn’t for the philosophy that Alverno instills in us, I probably wouldn’t be as well-rounded and focused as I am today.” 100% of Alverno High School Class of 2011 will attend college.

BETWEEN TWO WORLDS When All Is Said And Dunn
BY BILL DUNN We humans can be a very gullible group when we choose to be. If more than two people believe that something is true, it becomes a movement or at the very least, it warrants producing a reality TV show. The other night, when my daughter Rachel was home from college, she wrangled my wife Stacey and I into watching a reality show called “T.A.P.S. - Ghost Hunters”. T.A.P.S. stands for The Atlantic Paranormal Society. Apparently it was a marathon, which initially I thought would be fun. Having always been a sucker for anything dealing with the paranormal, I bought the ticket and was in for the ride. All I could do was hope for the best. Who knows, maybe there would be some startling revelation or a way to get a message to the other side. There are a few folks over there that I wouldn’t mind having a chat with if the possibility arose.
The show follows the usual format of investigative shows. The investigation, the pursuit, the analysis, and the findings. The one thing I kept wondering about is all the very high tech equipment they were using. The biggest question being is where do they get all this stuff? During the show they broke one of their E.M.F. gages. (F.Y.I. : E.M.F. stands for Electro Magnetic Field, but don’t ask.) Well, when it broke their reaction was one of “Oh well, we will just run out get another one.” Where? Target? Kmart? Best Buy? Ghosts ‘R Us? Now “T.A.P.S.-Ghost Hunters” is not the only game in town and should not be confused with the other spirits haunting the television airwaves. There are quite a few. You’ve got “Most Haunted”, “Haunted America”, “Haunted Travel”, “Celebrity Ghost Story”, “My Ghost Story”, “Ghostly Graveyards” and my son Alex’s favorite “Ghost Adventures”. Trust me this is nowhere near a complete list. As I discovered after a brief conversation with Alex, people have a tendency to become loyal to their paranormal shows. In his mind, Ghost Hunters couldn’t rattle
Ghost Adventures’ chains. Having watched both shows I wasn’t exactly sure why his loyalty was based there, but to each his own. But back to the gullible part of this article. Granted, believing in ghosts, spirits, and the paranormal is a tough sell. It requires a giant leap of faith for most. According to the latest poll, 78% of us don’t buy into it. But that also means that there are 22% that think that it is true. Despite the number of shows on cable the ghost movement needs to get some hardcore press in order to move it to the front of the world wide consciousness. You know like the recent waste of everyone’s time over the pending end of the world or “The Rapture” to those in the apocalyptic know. I was absolutely stunned and annoyed by the amount of coverage it was receiving the week before our impending demise. It always mystifies me when the news media sets their sights on a given story regardless of its origins. In this case it was because an 89 year old ex-Sunday school teacher named Harold Egbert Camping, who happens to have a radio show, said it would happen. He came
to his revelation by taking a few passages from the bible and applying some good old fashion numerology mumbo jumbo to it. When it didn’t happen on the date and time planned, which it obviously didn’t, he did what every good con artist does, he changed the date. Until everyone loses interest and by everyone I mean the press, we will keep following his predictions blindly. Why anybody would listen to this guy’s babbling in the first place is amazing to me. Since when does teaching Sunday school qualify somebody to predict anything except maybe what time the class will end? As much as I want to believe in ghosts, for me there needs to be more definitive proof. So far all we have witnessed from any of these shows are blurry shadows, garbled disembodied voices, and goofy hosts running around like a bunch of giddy kindergarteners. Trust me, when there is something that is even close to proof, the news media will be all over it. Until then I will have to be stuck between two worlds. It was formally opened in 1931 by a group of British women affiliated with The Daughters of the British Empire (D.B.E.) in the Western District. Their vision of a place where elderly people could be cared for in a warm and kind environment continues to this day. On September 22, 1931, Sir John Adams, Consul General of Great Britain, formally opened the British Home. Mrs. Florence Shaefer of Long Beach donated the money for the second resident cottage. The cottage was named after her, and this building today houses nine residents. Its front verandah, facing Manzanita Avenue, provides a cool and shady spot in the late afternoon. In 1934, Mr. Harry J. Foskett of Pacific Palisades donated the

money necessary to purchase the lot behind Shaefer Cottage, which fronted on Ramona Avenue, and built the nine room cottage which is there today. These booths offer games, refreshments and all things British. ond Avenue, in regards to a male and female arguing. A records check of the involved 41-year-old Hispanic male, revealed a $50,000 misdemeanor warrant. The subject was placed under arrest for the warrant. About 9:00 p.m., units were dispatched to the Pavilions parking lot, located at 745 West Naomi Avenue, to ascertain if a subject who was claiming to be a law enforcement officer was legitimate. An investigation revealed that a 17-year-old Asian male, was in possession of a dangerous weapon and impersonating a police officer. The juvenile was arrested. Tuesday, May 24: About 9:40 a.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Golden West Avenue and Huntington Drive in regards to a subject who had been bitten by a dog. The 60-year-old Asian female was approached by two dogs, one white and one black as she was walking in the area. The black dog jumped on her and bit her forearm. An area check for the dogs was conducted, but they were not located. Shortly after 7:00 p.m., officers
responded to the Arcadia Police Department’s front lobby regarding a lost property report. An investigation revealed that the reporting party had misplaced her Iphone at a restaurant in Hollywood a couple of days earlier. Through a mobile web application, she was able to trace the phone to the 400 block of Stanford Drive in Arcadia. A follow-up investigation by the officers further revealed that an employee of the restaurant was in possession of the phone. The investigation is still ongoing. Wednesday, May 25: About 3:30 p.m., officers responded to the Arcadia Police Department’s front lobby in regards to a suspicious circumstances report. Upon arrival, the 39-year-old Asian male reported that a suspect, described as a Black male, 6’02”, 240 lbs., with black hair and brown eyes approached him outside the 99 Ranch Market located at 1300 South Golden West Avenue. The suspect had explained that he was making a large cash donation to a nearby church but needed a ride there and offered a large portion of
the donation to the victim in return. Once they arrived, the suspect convinced the victim he needed a second person to help with the donation. A second suspect described as an Asian male, 5’05”, 200 lbs. with black hair and brown eyes, joined in. The first suspect then convinces the victim to give him $5,000 and a gold chain to give to the second suspect as a gesture of goodwill to gain his trust in return for the larger portion of the donation. Both suspects are gone after the victim agrees to drive around the block while they complete the transaction. Between 11:00 a.m. and 4:15 p.m., a residential burglary occurred in the 0 block of West Naomi Avenue. Unknown suspect(s) entered the home by shattering a window. Once inside, the suspect(s) pried open doors, ransacked several rooms and stole cash and jewelry for an approximate loss of $18,000. Thursday, May 26: Shortly after 10:00 p.m., units were dispatched to the 1000 block of Arcadia Avenue in

An investigation revealed that a white GMC van had collided with a red Toyota Corolla and had fled the scene leaving behind a license plate. The van was located at a nearby business. A follow-up investigation is being conducted by the Detective Bureau. Between 5:15 a.m. and 7:50 a.m., an auto burglary occurred in the 100 block of North First Avenue. Unknown suspect(s) smashed the rear passenger side window and stole an Ipod for an approximate loss of $250. Friday, May 27: Between 10:15 a.m. and 2:20 p.m., a residential burglary occurred in the 2000 block of South Fifth Avenue. Unknown suspect(s) removed the screen and opened the window leading to the master bedroom. Once inside, the suspect(s) ransacked the master bedroom and stole various electronic items for an approximate loss of $600. Shortly after 1:00 p.m., units were dispatched to the 1000 block of Alta Vista Avenue regarding an abandoned vehicle in the roadway. A records check of the vehicle revealed it was stolen. The car was towed and the registered owner was notified of the recovery. Saturday, May 28: At approximately 12:33 a.m., officers were conducting a driver’s license and sobriety check point at the intersection of Baldwin Avenue and Harvard Drive. A records check of a 23-year-old Black male driver revealed an outstanding misdemeanor warrant for $30,000. The subject was placed under arrest for the warrant. About 2:40 a.m., a traffic stop was made at Colorado Boulevard and Santa Rosa Avenue for following the vehicle in front of it too closely as well as swerving into the center divider. An investigation revealed that the 30-year-old White male was under the influence of alcohol and was placed under arrest for Driving under the Influence.
Monrovia PD
During the last seven day period, the Police Department handled 520 service events, resulting in 95 investigations. Following are the last week’s highlighted issues and events: False Information to a Peace Officer / Possession of a Controlled Substance / Warrant Suspect Arrested On May 22 at 2:35 a.m., an officer on patrol in the area of Duarte Road and Sixth noticed his radar activate, which indicated a vehicle
was approaching at a high rate of speed. The vehicle passed by and the officer went in pursuit, attempting to stop the vehicle. The driver failed to stop and made numerous sharp turns in an attempt to get away. The driver finally stopped at the 210 Freeway and was detained. During the investigation, the driver was determined to be driving under the influence and was arrested. Outstanding Warrant - Suspect Arrested On May 22 at 9:35 a.m., an officer was patrolling a business parking lot in the 100 block of West Foothill when he saw a male subject loitering in front of a store. He recognized the subject and knew he had an outstanding felony warrant for his arrest for possession of methamphetamine. He detained the subject and confirmed the warrant, then arrested him without incident.. Commercial Burglary Suspect Arrested On May 23 at 5 a.m., officers responded to a burglary alarm at a business in the 300 block of West Huntington. Upon arrival, they found someone had forced a back window open and entered the location. There was no evidence of any property taken. One of the officers noticed a suspicious person on a bicycle leaving the area of Cypress and Magnolia. The bicyclist was detained and found to be in possession of numerous packages of cigarettes. A search of the area revealed that a neighboring business was also burglarized by a suspect using a cutting tool to create a crawl space into the location. The investigation revealed that the cigarettes found in the suspect’s possession were stolen from that business. The suspect was arrested. The investigation is continuing. Vehicle Burglary On May 23 at 6:17 a.m., an officer was dispatched on the report of a vehicle burglary that occurred in the 200 block of West Lemon. The window on the victim’s vehicle was broken and items inside the vehicle were stolen. Grand Theft Auto On May 23 at 7:12 a.m., a victim called to report his green, 2005 Honda Pilot had been stolen sometime during the night. The victim’s son parked and secured the vehicle in front of the residence the night before. He believes this is related to a burglary at his residence in which his extra keys to his vehicle were
taken. There were no signs of forced entry. Theft from a Vehicle On May 23 at 11:22 a.m., a resident in the 300 block of North May called to report a theft from her vehicle. The suspect took checks and other items from the vehicle during the night. The victim believes she left the doors unlocked. Robbery - Suspect Arrested On May 23 at 4:18 p.m., loss prevention officers from a business in the 700 block of East Huntington called regarding a female subject they detained for shoplifting. The female would not comply with t h e loss
prevention officer’s request to walk back inside the store. After several attempts, the loss prevention officer tried to take the female’s hand to control her and she began to fight him. As they fell to the ground, the suspect kicked at the loss prevention officer. A police officer arrived and the female suspect was taken into custody without further incident. Residential Burglary On May 23 at 4:49 p.m., a resident in the 800 block of Oakdale Avenue called to report that someone had broken into her home. She had left the location and had been away from her home overnight. When she returned the next day at about 4:30 in the afternoon, she found the rear, sliding glass door had been smashed. Officers arrived and checked the premises. Miscellaneous items, jewelry, and a rifle and revolver were taken. Hit and Run Traffic Collision / Evading Police / Attempt Suicide / 72-Hour Mental Evaluation On May 23 at 11:55 p.m., police received a call reporting a man and woman arguing in the area of Palm and Canyon. Officers arrived and contacted the fe-
male subject. She said she had been arguing with her boyfriend, who then left her there and drove away. An officer saw the boyfriend driving north on Primrose from Colorado, then east on Lemon. The officer attempted to make a traffic stop, but the man drove through the red light at Myrtle. He continued east on Lemon and ran the stop sign at Ivy. He lost control of his vehicle and collided into a parked car in the 200 block of East Lemon. The suspect fled the accident scene on foot. The suspect was not located, but his identity was determined. Officers attempted to locate the suspect at his home, but he was not at the location. T h e next
morning at 8:18 a.m., officers were dispatched to the suspect’s residence in the 200 block of Poinsettia. The 19-yearold suspect had returned and was threatening suicide. Officers arrived and were told the suspect locked himself in his room and he had two knives with him. The suspect refused to open the door for officers. Officers forced entry through the door and detained the suspect without further incident. He was taken to a hospital, where he was held for mental
evaluation. Charges will be filed with the District Attorney’s Office. Vehicle Burglary On May 24 at 6:29 a.m., a resident in the 100 block of McKinley called to report that someone had broken into her vehicle. An officer was dispatched to the location and found that the suspect had broken out a rear passenger window. The victim had left her purse in the vehicle and it had been taken by the suspect. Commercial Burglary - Suspect Arrested On May 25 at 1:59 p.m., loss prevention from a business in the 500 block of West Huntington reported that a female subject had taken merchandise and exited the store without paying. She fled in a black vehicle driven by a male subject. Loss prevention officers obtained the license plate number. An officer responded and contacted the loss prevention officers, who provided the license plate number of the vehicle and a photo of the female suspect. A DMV check of the license plate indicated the vehicle is registered to a residence in the county area of Arcadia. The officer contacted the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department and requested they drive by the location to check for the vehicle. The vehicle was located at the residence. Monrovia officers went to the location and contacted the female suspect. She was arrested for burglary without incident.

Monday, May 9th: 4:48 PM- Petty Theft, 400 blk. San Gabriel Ct. An unknown suspect(s) stole a Garmin GPS and a Sony digital camera from an unlocked car parked
on the owner’s driveway. Total loss value is $260.00. Tuesday, May 10th: 7:31 PM- Auto Burglary. 100 blk. Rancho Rd. An unknown suspect(s) stole Ray Ban sunglasses and CD recordings in a silver plastic case from a locked car on the driveway with the passenger window down about 3 inches. Total loss value $226.00. 8:44 PM- Tampering/Injuring vehicle or contents, 600 blk. E. Sierra Madre Blvd. An unknown suspect(s) stole both of the rear light covers from a parked car in the south parking lot off E. Sierra Madre Blvd. Thursday, May 12: 4:30 AM- Auto Burglary, 700 blk. W. Sierra Madre Blvd. An unknown suspect(s) smashed the driver’s side window and took a CD binder containing 200 CDs. The total loss is valued at $500.00. Friday, May 13th: 8:42 AM- Auto Burglary, 100 blk. W. Grandview Ave. An unknown suspect(s) smashed the driver’s side window and removed a purple and black leopard print wallet from the center console containing $8.00 currency, a CA driver license, a Visa credit card, a debit card, student id card from Santa Clarita, a Disneyland pass, an expired CA license, an IPod and adapter plug with a brown and black leopard skin case, a Motorola Droid cellular phone and a Garmin GPS. The total loss is valued at $979.00. Saturday, May 14th: 10:38 AM- Use Another’s Personal Identification to Obtain Credit/Etc. 100 blk. Lowell Ave. This incident involves the unauthorized use of the victim’s credit by trying to open a credit card account without the victims permission. 6:52 PM- Willfully Harming a Child, 600 blk. E. Sierra Madre Blvd. This incident involves a man kicking a 9 year old child to keep him from crawling underneath the table he was carrying with five other adults. The man was arrested and transported to Pasadena Police Department Jail for booking.

Life Remembered Ednah “Thea” Roberts 1928 - 2011 Ednah “Thea” Roberts, daughter of Edith Mortensen Remington and John William Scales passed away on May 12, 2011 of natural causes, in her own home, in Midvale, Utah, as was her wish. She is mourned by 2 sons Richard Leland Thorpe Jr. of North Las Vegas, Nevada, and Christopher Weston Roberts Sr. of Midvale, Utah, 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma we will miss you. Thea was born in Los Angeles, California, and grew up in Southern California. She attended BYU and Cal Poly where she received her degree. She then worked for the State of California as an Employment Specialist, where she cataloged job descriptions for the California Workforce system. Thea was a member of the Monrovia, California Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints from its inception in the 1930’s, where she was the first baptism performed in the new ward, until 10 years prior
to her death. Most recently she was a member of the Union Fort Second Ward. She was an avid genealogist, and a compassionate person. She exemplified the scripture “I was an hungered and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: naked and ye clothed me” (Matthew 25:35-36). After her retirement she took care of her ailing mother until her death in 1998 and made and donated hundreds of sandwiches every week for the local homeless shelter. This earned her the
nickname “The Sandwich Lady”. Thea and her family would like to thank the Millcreek Home Health and Hospice staff of nurses and aides, as well as Heather and John for the years of service on both Home Health and then Hospice, for the compassion and true love that was shown her. Also we would like to thank Alta Ridge Assisted Living in Sandy for the good care and compassion of the entire staff during her difficult days. A special thank you to Christie, her Hospice nurse for making her laugh when she wanted to cry and to Judy, her neighbor, for years of bringing in the mail and taking out the trash. Services were held Saturday, May 21, 2011, at the Union Fort Second Ward Building located at 540 East 7200 South, Midvale, Utah. Viewing at 10:00 am followed by Services at 11:00 am. Vainor was greeted enthusiastically by the crowd when he called out “God Bless America.” That seemed to sum up the mood of those in attendance. After the program,
Vainor explained that he had been in a naval band during World War II, but that because his grandfather had been taken captive by the Japanese when he was serving in the Tzar’s Imperial Navy during the Russian-Japanese War in 1905, it was important to him to serve in the Pacific. “I discovered that only buglers were being sent to the Pacific,” Vainor said and so he taught himself to play the bugle. “I did get in a few licks for grandpa,” he explained.
