By May S. Ruiz he days are getting longer, the temperature is rising, and your kids are sooo done with school. They can’t wait for
summer break! You parents, meanwhile, are trying to figure out what to do to help your kids survive the doldrums of summer (for they will surely be bored out of their wits and, pretty soon, they will start whining about it). Happily, there is a multitude of clubs, schools, and organizations offering summer camps to fit the various interests and passions of young children. Besides providing children with activities to fill the time between school years, summer camps also offer educational, emotional, physical, and psychological benefits that far exceed the money you are putting in. While the return on your investment cannot be measured in actual dollars and cents, your children are reaping the value out of the time they are spending in these camps. According to the American Camp Association (ACA), the experience helps children develop their social skills as they participate in activities, communicate with other kids, and lead groups. It is also at camp where they build character and gain self-respect when they take on responsibility, rely on their resourcefulness to solve problems, and become resilient when faced with failures. Summer camp advances children’s community living and service skills like caring, fairness, citizenship, and trustworthiness. Some camps take children outside their home, enabling them to live
without their parents’ instruction and supervision. They need to make decisions on their own when the circumstance calls for such. They need to be prepared for unforeseen situations where they need to think on their toes. They will be exposed to new things, new experiences and new people. And, in this era of self-absorbed millennials, these kids can focus on something bigger than themselves. This magazine gives you a selection of camps to send your children to, from such diverse offerings as Cinderella summer camp where three-year-olds learn craft, dance, drama, and music; to real acting camp that centers on three essentials to becoming an actor: film acting technique, the business of the industry, and personal assessment. An eight-week summer extravaganza in Monrovia Recreation Park covers active and passive games, educational activities, crafts, excursions, cultural diversity programs, exercise and nutrition. Camp Shi’ini, a Native American themed day camp in Pasadena, features archery, canoeing, horseback riding, sports, totem pole painting, swimming, and a month-long treasure hunt. A summer challenge for campers going into the 7th, 8th and 9th grades takes them into the great outdoors to develop new skills or improve on existing ones. Whatever summer camp your children choose to spend their time at, they will leave the comforts of home and wander out into a world that is not as comfortable and familiar as the one they are used to. They will learn to think for themselves and start to act like adults. And that is well worth the price and time for going to summer camp!

he Pasadena Educational Foundation, a communitybased nonprofit organization, was established in 1971 to support, enhance, and supplement the programs, initiatives, and priorities of the Pasadena Unified School District. It was 12 years ago that PEF began offering a summer enrichment program for students in Pasadena and neighboring cities. Its slate of classes combines academic, athletic and artistic subjects designed to engage children in a fun and stress-free environment. The half-day schedule leaves students ample time to enjoy their summer break while keeping their minds ready for the school year ahead. The success of PEF’s program ensures its return every year and with it new locations. The program runs from June 15 through July 16, Monday through Thursday. For incoming kindergarten and 1st grade students, there is a self-contained class that

Immersion Program in Spanish is available at Franklin and San Rafael; Mandarin is offered at Don
Benito. A quick glance at PEF’s brochure reveals a potpourri of useful classes in the language arts like writing in several genres including fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. The art studio classes list jewelrymaking, knitting, and embroidery. In the field of Drama/Theatre, there is a course that offers acting exercises, improv and pantomime. In STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), students can take marine biology, botany, physical science, algebra or computers. Music classes in violin, the recorder, and beginning band are offered in different schools. There are dance, tennis, golf, and soccer lessons to keep students active and healthy. For the culinarily inclined, cooking is taught along with nutrition, using math and science. What a wonderful opportunity to learn new things and expand knowledge while meeting new friends. What a great way to spend summer!

PLay smarter basketball My name is Coach Richard Marquis of the “Play Smarter” Youth Basketball Coed Classes. My basketball background includes many years of coaching at all levels of the sport. This includes the youngest players to the very highest level. As a father of five athletic children of my own, I just wanted to share some of my thoughts with local parents. After years of playing, coaching, and developing many of my own athletes and helping them move on to the next level to gain the rewards of their hard work and extra efforts, I have seen the game of basketball make some very big changes. The sport became much more competitive, and it is harder to achieve playing at a higher level at the junior and senior school levels.
I see too many parents and students wait until it is too late to help their son or daughter make the effort of preparing for “what it takes” to compete in school sports. Just playing on a YMCA or a local recreation youth league is no longer enough by itself before entering local junior or senior high school years. There is certainly nothing wrong with these local youth programs, especially for the beginners; but, if and when they get more serious and begin to really learn to like the sport, they should or will need to move to a more competitive youth training program by the time they reach the age of 10 or 12. Today, if by this age your child is not playing on a travel team or participating in some of the top training programs
in your local area, it may be too late. Here, in this San Gabriel Valley area, there are several very good youth training programs. For example, there is the SGV Program in the local area, also the Brotherhood Program in Pasadena, and, of course, our own “Play Smarter” Coed Weekend Classes. However, there are quite a few travel teams and other very good classes or camps to pick from. These can be very helpful to your child to get some early advanced coaching and to give them the best opportunity to play at a higher level of the sport. Visit playsmarter basketball.com for more information.

Since 1987, Elite’s renowned test preparation programs have helped over 120 students obtain perfect scores on the SAT. Our dedicated teaching staff delivers the highest quality of learning in our classrooms and our curriculum department keeps our materials updated and relevant to ensure our students’ continued success on standardized exams. As much as our successes in test prep have been highlights, Elite’s primary mission is to provide holistic academic care to our students. As educators, we believe that test scores alone do not define a student’s potential. We therefore
seek to provide a challenging educational environment that is most suitable for each individual’s overall academic success. At Elite, with the guidance of our knowledgeable counselors, students can choose from a variety of programs that will prepare them not only for standardized tests but for college and beyond. With programs like ReadiPrep, we equip students with essential reading, writing and math skills and through services like QUAD – our GPA management program – we supplement weaknesses in school subjects. Our student body ranges from middle school to high school
and we cover everything from Pre-Algebra and AP exams to navigating the intricacies of college admissions through our college application workshops. For about two decades, Elite of Arcadia has had the privilege of partnering with thousands of students and families in the San Gabriel Valley as they achieved their academic goals. It is our hope to continue enriching the lives of the ambitious and motivated youth in our community for many years to come.

CEC’s Summer Exploration Camp Is a Great Option for Families That Need Flexibility The Child Educational Center (CEC) is once again offering an exciting summer camp filled with adventures, learning, and friendship at its wooded La Cañada site, as well as at its Pasadena Caltech site. With a focus on handson activities and outdoor fun, the CEC’s Summer Exploration Camp offers a variety of programs sure to suit every child’s interests. Weekly themed programs include the exciting “Rockets, Rovers & More” week, “Let’s Play! Sports and International Games,” “Marine Life,” “Amazing Animals,” and “Artful Antics,” as well as field trips, swimming, and much more. “The ‘Rockets, Rovers & More’ programming really draws from our meaningful connection with JPL and Caltech,” said Allegra Inganni, CEC’s Director of
School Age Programs. The popular outdoorbased Summer Exploration Camp offers flexible enrollment for one week, a few weeks, or all nine summer weeks. “We want to work with families that have varied summer vacation schedules,” said Inganni. “We understand that not all families need a full summer of care, and feel they shouldn’t have to pay for weeks they don’t need.” In addition, CEC’s “Descanso Discoveries” program for children entering grades 1-7 features gardening, orienteering, science labs, cooking, and adventures galore in Descanso Gardens’ magnificent outdoor setting. The Horse Camp at
Altadena Stables is another popular option. Enrollment is now open for children entering grades 1-7. To enroll your child or view all summer program options, go to ceconline.org or call (818) 354-3418.

This summer at
MARANATHA
HIGH SCHOOL
For 68 years, Camp Shi’ini has provided active and entertaining camp activities for boys and girls without a prolonged absence from home. Our goal is to provide an enjoyable and safe environment for children, while also educating them about Native American folklore through interactive and actionpacked surroundings. We are the “ultimate camping experience” in the San Gabriel Valley. Camp Shi’ini is a Native American themed day camp that lasts five weeks each summer. Shi’ini, pronounced “Shee-nee,” is a Navajo word meaning “Summer People.” Our
PLAY
theme is portrayed in several daily events, including horseback riding, canoeing, archery, bear hunting, totem pole painting, teepee building, hiking, beach trips, swimming, and an extraordinary month-long treasure hunt adventure! While at camp, the children are broken into various groups according to their ages. Each of these groups functions as a separate unit throughout the day. There are a dozen groups, each composed of 12 campers and 2 counselors. Our 6:1 camper-to-counselorratio is one of the very best throughout all of the San Gabriel Valley!

A current student leading a walki f o r each school they are visiting with the questions they need to ask. They should write what they liked the most and the least about each school. They should have observations by categories: the intellectual atmosphere (Do students enjoy their courses or are they stressed out? What is the advising system for freshmen? Are there opportunities for independent study/study abroad?). They should note the social climate (Do students stay on campus or do they leave on weekends? What are the facilities for socializing?). They should observe campus life (What are the living arrangements? Is there guaranteed housing for four years? What are the dining options?). Also of paramount consideration is campus
security (How safe is the campus? Are there cameras around the periphery of the campus? Can outsiders gain access to the student union, the fitness center, or the library?). Your children might also want to know the teaching style of the university (Do professors in their field teach the course? Is teaching relegated to graduate students? What is the grading system?). Some children know right away when they visit a campus that they want to spend the next four years there. Of maybe, they cannot see themselves in it. But it would be a good thing to know before they apply. For the full version of this article, please go to pasadenaindependent. com .

Visiting various school campuses is an essential step in your children’s college application process. Even if they are planning on matriculating into the school their parents attended, or if they have always dreamed of going to a particular school, they should still take the time to actually see and experience the school firsthand. Your children’s advisors usually organize spring campus tours. It is a good time to visit because classes are usually in session, so your children can see how classes are conducted. Students are also on campus; thus, your children will get a better feel for the college experience. However, that is not to say that your children should only visit during the spring. The long summer break makes for an excellent time for seniors who were not able to visit college campuses during their junior year spring break. You could make it a fun, family road trip. There are several schools in Southern California that are within driving distance, and visiting them is not as cost prohibitive as going to out-of-state schools. However, before you pack your bags and get your kids in the van, there are several things your college seekers should have done first. They should make the appointment with the school’s admissions office. This is very important: YOUR CHILDREN should be the ones calling for the appointment. Most universities have a morning and afternoon tour (at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.) that lasts two hours. There is an information session, usually held by an admissions officer, in a large auditorium. This is followed by the campus tour, usually led by a nimble and friendly student who is adept at walking backwards. Your children should also prepare a college checklist
Music enriches the mind Cont’d from pg. 8
blending well with other musicians. Performing in a band, orchestra or chorus helps students learn how to work well with others (which is what employers are looking for these days). Daily practicing helps a student self-critique, problemsolve, and patiently work towards reaching a goal that is not immediate. (Learning how to delay gratification is crucial for achieving success.) How can a Summer Music Camp improve your child’s chances to get into their Dream College? Students who attend summer music camps get the opportunity to develop all of those skills in a fun, safe environment. They can explore their
creativity in a setting free from the distractions of school, and often, social media. Students get exposed to their peers’ different learning styles and cultures, which can help them problem-solve their own challenges and/ or help others. When I attended Boston University’s Tanglewood Institute as a teenager, I was immersed in the beautiful Northeastern scenery of trees and hills that I had not experienced before. I had met people from the Philippines, Taiwan, Germany and many other U.S. states, who I am still friends with to this day. Your child doesn’t have to want to major in music in college either. Many of my Tanglewood friends
did not go on to major in music. Instead, they chose law, medicine, science, teaching and other professions. There are many prestigious summer music camps to choose from, like the Tanglewood Institute in Massachusetts, Interlochen in Michigan, California Summer Music at Sonoma University, Idyllwild Arts Academy, or the Litchfield Jazz Camps. Some camps allow for participation from younger students, like those in middle school. Attending a summer music camp is unique enough to make your child’s college application stand out from the others and give your child an edge in the admissions process.
