Agroupofveterans
called for the protectionofCalifornia desert public lands Tuesday in Joshua Tree.
According to Vet Voice Foundation, public lands are facing unprecedented threats from the federal government amid multiple attempts to privatize and sell-off these places. The California desert, which includes millions of acres of public lands, is a part of the nation’s military history, supports small businesses and helps create jobs while providing places where veterans and others spend time outdoors, Foundation members said.
Over the past year, there have been multiple attempts to pass legislation that would sell-off public lands acres nationwide, including in California, and the mass firings of agency employees who were responsible for managing these places.
In November, President Donald Trump nominated Steve Pearce, a longtime advocate for the privatization and sale of public lands, to lead the Bureau of Land Management. If the U.S. Senate confirms his nomination, Pearce will be

responsible for millions of acres of California desert public lands.
“Veterans work as wildland firefighters, park rangers, land managers, and biologists,” Janessa Goldbeck, CEO of Vet Voice Foundation and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, said in a statement. “Thousands more veterans build small businesses around public lands — as guides, outfitters,
outdoor instructors, tourism operators, and more. Threats to these places are a threat to how many veterans make a living. This issue is not theoretical. It is about paychecks, pensions, mortgages, and family stability.”
ChemehueviIndian Tribe Chairman Emeritus Glenn Lodge also spoke at the event Tuesday about the

significance of California desert public lands.
“California desert public lands are our homelands,” Lodge, a U.S. Army Special Forces veteran, said in a statement. “We have stewarded these places from time immemorial and we have served our nation abroad as well. We stand against any threats to our desert
Following $1.18B in state funding, SoCal officials
By Joe Taglieri joet@beaconmedianews.com
Electedofficials throughout Southern California on Monday welcomed the latest round of state funding totaling $1.18 billion for more residential and crisis treatment centers statewide.
Grants from Round 2 of Bond Behavioral Health ContinuumInfrastructure Program will support 66 projects across 130 behavioral health facilities, including in rural and tribal communities, according to Gov. Gavin Newsom's office.
Counties and cities are expected to gain a total of 6,919 residential treatment beds and 27,561 outpatient slots, which according to the governor's office exceeds Proposition 1 statewide goals in just two years and supporting 177 projects across 333 facilities. Voters enacted the proposition, a $6.4 billion bond that Newsom supported, in 2024 by a narrow margin of 50.2% to 49.8%.
The new funding round follows the recent announcement of a 9% decrease in unshelteredhomelessness statewide, the first such reduction in 15 years.
A recent report by CalMatters found that none of the projects expected in 2025 under Newsom’s mental health ballot measure have opened. Projects in the initial round have hit delays, in some cases pushing back opening dates by two years, or been cancelled.
The state awarded nearly half of Proposition 1 bond funds last spring, kicking off what Newsom called the swiftest distribution of bond funds in state history. Expectations were that 10 of the first 124 projects would complete by the end of 2025.
CalMatters has confirmed that nine of those projects were delayed, with new completion dates ranging from this summer to summer 2028. One project was cancelled.
A number of local officials issued statements welcoming the second infusion of state funding.
Los Angeles County Board Chair Hilda L. Solis: “For years, Los Angeles County has been in the midst of mental health and substance use crises, and I supported Proposition 1 to bring the needed resources to

By City News Service

Pocketbook pressures are likely to increase noticeably throughout the Inland Empire and elsewhere as the effects of steadily rising energy prices stemming from the Middle East war start to weigh on consumer goods and services, according to published reports.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics will not publish the Inland Empire's bimonthly regional Consumer Price Index, which tracks a broad range of costs, until April 10, but national trends already point to elevated inflation.
The Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland's "Inflation Nowcasting" metric for personal consumption expenditures showed a nearly half-percentagepoint rise in recent weeks. That follows publication of the nationwide CPI released by the BLS Wednesday, showing a .3% growth in consumer costs for February.
Since the reported joint U.S.-Israel military operation that sparked fighting with Iran on Feb. 28 after a girls' school was bombed and the nation's supreme leader was assassinated, oil prices have shot up significantly. The per- barrel spot price on West Texas Intermediate
Crude, a popular domestic benchmark for gauging energy futures contracts, reached $98 on Friday — 40% above the price on Feb. 27 — according to OilPrice. com and Marketwatch.com.
The higher oil prices are feeding into all petroleum products, most notably gas costs. As of Friday, the nationwide average price for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel was $3.63, compared to $2.94 a month ago, according to AAA. The service said California's average is $5.42, compared to $4.56 a month ago. In Riverside County, it's $5.35 per gallon, compared to $4.45 a month ago.
The energy component of inflation bears a broad influence. Not only are transportation costs impacted, but all petroleumbased products, including plastics, tires, asphalt and pharmaceuticals.
The all-time record spot price of a barrel of crude oil in the U.S. occurred in July 2008, when it hit $147.27, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
That was the same year the Great Recession took hold, culminating in the foreclosure crisis. Riverside County ranked among the
top three locations for foreclosure activity in California over a two-year period. The Inland Empire as a whole was in the top 10 nationwide.
Kiplinger's columnist David Payne said this week that, "Even if the war ends and gasoline prices fall back to their prewar levels," inflation will remain elevated through the year. The exact extent was unknown.
A spokesman for Iran's Khatam al-Anbiya headquarters in Tehran is releasing statements daily, saying the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf will remain a target of the nation's military, with oil tankers — except those from China and a few other countries — not permitted to pass through. He's said the American public and Europeans shouldn't be surprised if oil prices climb to $200 per barrel.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration has labeled the Strait of Hormuz a "critical oil chokepoint" internationally. Roughly 20% of global oil supplies flow through the Persian Gulf.
The Trump administration has scoffed at questions over whether Iran can
exercise complete control over the channel, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth telling reporters Friday, "We have been dealing with it and don't ... worry about it."
However, CNN reported Friday that sources within the administration had acknowledged the Pentagon and others had "significantly underestimated" the impacts of Iran's operations in the Strait of Hormuz.
There has been no clearly articulated U.S. exit strategy announced since fighting erupted.
U.S. Congressmen Mark Takano, D-Riverside, and Raul Ruiz, D-Palm Desert, have both expressed opposition to the Trump administration's decision to back Israel in waging "Operation Epic Fury," with Ruiz saying last week "there was no proof or evidence given to Congress and the American people of an imminent threat to the U.S."
Rep. Ken Calvert, R-Corona, and Darrell Issa, R-Temecula, are in support of the campaign. Calvert said Iran's "regime has failed to divert from its violent path" of supporting terrorism and, therefore, deserved to be attacked.

tackle these challenges head on. Thanks to Governor Newsom’s historic investment in behavioral health infrastructure, we are moving closer to providing all Los Angeles County residents the critical services they need. This funding will help expand the County’s capacity to treat individuals with mental health and substance use disorders, many of which are experiencing homelessness, with the dignity they deserve.”
Orange County Board Chair Doug Chaffee: “Orange County appreciates the $17.3 million to Proposition 1 investments to strengthen our behavioral health system and expand care for residents with the greatest needs. The Generations project, in partnership with UC Irvine, will add 61 sub-acute and longer-term treatment beds for patients who require a higher level of care, including individuals under conservatorship. In addition, KC Services will expand access to substance use disorder treatment, primary care, and officebased opioid treatment. These projects will help ensure Orange County residents have greater access to appropriate treatment, and the County will continue working closely with our partners to move these projects forward as quickly as possible.”
Orange County Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento: "Securing this funding is a major step forward for Orange County as we continue expanding access to mental-health and substance-use treatment. With $17.3 million supporting two critical projects, Orange County will add approximately 440 treatment beds, which significantly increases our ability to provide timely care for residents who need it most. By expanding capacity

and improving coordination across services, we are building a more responsive behavioral-health system that promotes recovery and supports healthier, safer communities across Orange County.”
San Bernardino County Supervisor Joe Baca Jr.: “Expanding access to substance-use treatment is critical to addressing the behavioral health challenges facing our communities. This $6 million investment in the City of Colton will help add much-needed treatment beds and ensure more residents have access to the care and support they need to recover and rebuild their lives. I appreciate Governor Newsom’s continued commitment to strengthening California’s behavioral health system and investing in solutions that promote healthier and safer communities across San Bernardino County.”
Ventura County Board Chair Jeff Gorell: “Proposition 1 is delivering the treatment and recovery resources communities like Ventura County urgently need. Investments in programs like Nate’s Place expand access to mental health
and substance use care and strengthen the local systems that help people in need stabilize, recover, and rebuild their lives.”
Mayor Jessica Ancona, city of El Monte: “This investment in the Foothill Family Service El Monte site is an important step toward expanding access to mental and behavioral health care in our community. Far too many families struggle to find the support they need, and projects like this help ensure services are available close to home. I want to thank Governor Newsom and the State of California for recognizing the need in communities like El Monte and for investing in programs that strengthen the health and well-being of our residents.”
Mayor Tim Sandoval, city of Pomona: “Health Right 360 Pomona provides life-saving services to the city and region. This award of Prop. 1 funds will allow the organization to continue to provide critical and essential health services to the community. Thank you to the voters of California for passing this measure that will help move people off the streets
and into treatment.”
Mayor Karen Goh, city of Bakersfield: “California’s mental health and substance use crisis calls for a comprehensive strategy that includes residential behavioral health beds. Round 2, BHCIP funding accelerates the development of essential recovery and treatment facilities in Bakersfield. It expands support for people facing mental health and substance use challenges and builds on the $22.8M awarded to the City of Bakersfield in Round 1 for 65 beds. The additional beds make a meaningful difference for families in Bakersfield and throughout Kern County. I am grateful to the State for supporting and recognizing the urgency of advancing these critical projects.”
Mayor Todd Gloria, City of San Diego: “There are too many people on our streets who are not just unsheltered, they are untreated. That reality is visible in communities across San Diego and California, and it underscores why expanding behavioral health infrastructure is so urgently needed. These investments will help create the facilities and care
people in crisis desperately need. I thank the Governor for stepping up with this funding, and I wholeheartedly agree with him when it comes to addressing mental illness and addiction: it’s time for no more excuses.”
Grant recipients from organizations that run the facilities also issued statements.
Brandon Fernandez, CEO of CRI-Help Inc., which received a $41.3 million Proposition 1 grant, said: “This funding award for CRI-Help's Lincoln Heights Recovery Campus Expansion project for Women with Children addresses a critical community need identified by our frontline staff. Our clinicians have consistently conveyed the ongoing struggle to locate residential substance use disorder treatment beds for mothers with children. Thanks to our Bond BHCIP Round 2: Unmet Needs funding award, we are eliminating a longstanding barrier to accessing care and are prioritizing family unification, ensuring mothers stay close to their children during their recovery process."
Lorna Little, president and CEO of St. Anne’s Family
Services, which received $20 million: “The significant BHCIP funding is critical to fueling our mission at St. Anne’s Family Services," she said. "It allows us to show up fully for the individuals and families who walk through our doors — not only meeting immediate needs, but walking alongside them toward lasting stability. The Brighter Futures Center will expand access to healing and recovery for individuals and families across Los Angeles. We are deeply grateful to partner with the State of California and remain committed to turning this investment into meaningful, measurable change.”
Helena Lopez, CEO of Greater Hope Foundation for Children Inc. which received $2.86 million: This award is especially meaningful to us because it supports our work in Barstow, a community that is often overlooked when conversations about behavioral health infrastructure take place. Yet the need there is real, and the families we serve deserve the same access to care and support as any other community in California. For many years, our Barstow team has quietly shown up for children and families who needed someone to walk alongside them. This investment helps ensure that those families are not forgotten and that the services available to them continue to grow and strengthen. We are deeply grateful that DHCS recognizes the importance of expanding behavioral health resources into communities like Barstow. It is an honor to partner in this effort to close gaps in care and build stronger systems of support for children and families.”

It was a celebration Sunday for "One Battle After Another," Paul Thomas Anderson's dark comedy about aging revolutionaries, which completed a successful run through Hollywood's awards season, winning the Oscar for best picture and five other prizes, including directing and adapted screenplay honors for Anderson.
The film out-dueled Ryan Coogler's "Sinners," which entered the night with a record-setting 16 nominations. "Sinners" star Michael B. Jordan won the Academy Award for best actor, while Coogler won for best original screenplay. The film also collected honors for original score and cinematography.
But "One Battle" ruled the evening at the Dolby Theatre, earning a total of six honors, including the top prize for best picture.
"Getting to make this film with this cast and this crew and Paul has already been the greatest filmmaking experience I can fathom," producer Sara Murphy told the crowd on behalf of the cast and crew. "So receiving this award is just beyond. My heart is exploding with gratitude."
Anderson took time to praise the other nominated films, noting that in 1975 the best picture nominees were "Dog Day Afternoon," "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," "Jaws," "Nashville" and "Barry Lyndon."
"There is no best among them," he said. "There is just what that mood might be that day. But we're happy to be part of this. A wonderful, wonderful journey with our fellow filmmakers, and filmmakers that even weren't recognized by the Academy. There's so many great films this year."
Earlier in the evening, Anderson won his first career Oscar for adapted screenplay, then collected another for best director. They were his first wins despite nearly a dozen previous nominations.
"You make a guy work hard for one of these, I really appreciate it," he said when

he accepted the directing prize.
"There will always be some doubt in your heart that you deserve it, but there is no question at the pleasure of having it for myself," he joked. "I'm here because of people's faith in me,. They give me their faith and their time, and that's the best part of being on a film crew, is being with people. We need each other. This is a wonderful gift, and I'm so happy to call the movies home."
Jordan won his first career Oscar on his first nomination for his dual role as twin brothers Smoke and Stack in "Sinners."
"God is good. God is good," the 39-year-old said as he accepted the prize.
"I stand here because of the people that came before me — Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, Will Smith. To be amongst those giants, among those greats, amongst my ancestors, amongst my guys. Thank you everybody in this room and everybody at home who supported me over my career. I feel it," Jordan said.
He also thanked people who went to see "Sinners."
"I love you guys and everybody at home who supported 'Sinners' and went to see the movie once, twice, three, four or five times. Thank you because you made this movie what it is. I love you," he said.
Jessie Buckley, 36, won her first Oscar Sunday, claiming the honor for best actress for her work as a grieving mother — the wife of William Shakespeare — in
the period drama "Hamnet."
"Thank you so much, this is really something," she said, giving thanks to her parents who had flown in from Ireland for the ceremony.
Buckley also heaped praise on director Chloé Zhao and screenwriter Maggie O'Farrell.
"To get to know this incandescent woman, and journey to understand the capacity of a mother's love is the greatest collision of my life," she said. "It's Mother's Day in the UK today. So I would like to dedicate this to the beautiful chaos of a mother's heart. We all come from a lineage of women who continue to create against all odds. Thank you for recognizing me in this role."
Amy Madigan, 75, won the prize for best supporting actress for her performance as Aunt Gladys in the horror film "Weapons." Madigan, who was only on screen for about 15 minutes in the film, gave thanks to the members of her behind-the-scenes team and the filmmakers.
"You know, we're kind of advised that, you know, don't say all these names because nobody knows who the hell these people are, but you're not rattling them off," she said. "They're people that mean something to you, that you wouldn't be here without them."
But she saved her highest praise for her husband, Ed Harris.
"The most important is my beloved Ed, who's been with me forever, and that's a long-ass time," she said. "And none of this would
mean anything if he wasn't by my side."
It was Madigan's first Oscar win. She was previously nominated 40 years ago for her supporting role in "Twice in a Lifetime."
Sean Penn, 65, won the award for best supporting actor for his role in "One Battle After Another." It was his third career Oscar, having previously won best actor prizes in 2009 for "Milk" and 2004 for "Mystic River."
Penn did not attend the Oscar ceremony.
Casting director Cassandra Kulukundis made history by winning the first Oscar in the newly created category for casting, for her work on "One Battle After Another."
Kulukundis dedicated the prize to all casting directors who never previously got the chance to be recognized on the Oscar stage. She also hailed Anderson, with whom she has worked multiple times, noting that she had won an Academy Award before him, "which is crazy." Anderson, of course, collected multiple Oscars later in the ceremony.
"One Battle" also won a prize for film editing for Andy Jurgensen — his first Oscar win on his first nomination.
Sunday's ceremony saw a series of firsts and historymaking wins.
The smash hit film "K-Pop Demon Hunters" won the award for best animated feature film, making co-director/writer Maggie Kang and producer Michelle Wong the first people of South Korean descent to
win in the category. The film also claimed the prize for best original song for "Golden," which became the first K-pop song to win in the category.
"The Girl Who Cried Pearls" took the Oscar for animated short film.
The cinematography prize went to Autumn Durald Arkapaw for "Sinners," also winning on her first career nomination. She is the first woman — and first woman of color — to ever win in the cinematography category.
For best international film, the Oscar went to "Sentimental Value," becoming the first film from Norway to win the Academy Award.
More Oscar history was made in the live-action short film category, when a tie vote resulted in prizes being awarded to both "The Singers" and "Two People Exchanging Saliva." Tie votes are extremely rare at the Academy Awards, having occurred only six times previously in the Oscars' 98-year history. The most recent occurrence was in 2013, when the soundediting prize was shared by "Skyfall" and "Zero Dark Thirty."
The Oscar for costume design went to Kate Hawley for "Frankenstein." It was her first win on her first career nomination. "Frankenstein" also earned an Oscar for makeup and hairstyling for the team of Cliona Furey, Jordan Samuel and Mike Hill, and for production design for Tamara Deverell and Shane Vieau.
Ludwig Goransson won the original-score Oscar for "Sinners." It was his third career Oscar, previously winning for "Black Panther" and "Oppenheimer."
The Oscar for documentary feature film went to "Mr. Nobody Against Putin," the story of a Russian teacher who uncovers and documents the use of his school as a military recruitment center during the invasion of Ukraine.
"All the Empty Rooms," the story of a journalist and photographer who embark on a journey to document the empty bedrooms of children killed in school shootings, won the Oscar for best documentary short film.
The ceremony included an emotional tribute to the life of actor/writer/director Rob Reiner, who was killed along with his wife Michele Singer in their Brentwood home, allegedly by their 32-year-old son Nick. The killings occurred hours after the trio attended a holiday party at the home of comedian Conan O'Brien — who hosted the Oscar ceremony for the second straight year.
Billy Crystal, who starred in Reiner's films "When Harry Met Sally" and "The Princess Bride," led the tribute.
"My friends, Rob's movies will last for lifetimes because they were about what makes us laugh and cry and what we aspire to be — far better, in his eyes, far kinder, far funnier and far more human," Crystal said. "And when Michele Singer entered his life, they were unstoppable. A gifted photographer, she not only produced films with Rob, but it was her energy that had them working tirelessly to fight social injustice in the country that they both loved."
Crystal called their loss
For visual effects, the prize went to Joe Letteri, Richard Baneham, Eric Saindon, and Daniel Barrett for "Avatar: Fire and Ash."

Labor icon César Chávez sexuallyassaulted female followers as young as 12 in the 1970s, and raped United Farm Workers co-founder Dolores Huerta, now 95, in 1966, according to an explosive New York Times investigation released Wednesday.
The story was published one day after the UFW and the César Chávez Foundation announced that they will abstain from honoring the late labor leader on this year's state holiday on March 31, citing "disturbing allegations."
The Times said its story was based on interviews with more than 60 people, including top Chavez aides at the time, and also his relatives and former members of the UFW.
The story quotes a woman who says Chávez took her into his office when he was 45 and she was 13, kissed her and pulled her pants down. She said dozens of sexual encounters followed over the next four years, though she says none involved intercourse.
Another woman says she was 12 when Chávez groped her breast, and 15 when he arranged to have her stay at a motel during a march through California and had sexual intercourse with her.
Both women were the daughters of organizers who had marched in rallies alongside Chávez, according to the Times. The story claims that Chávez used other women in the farm labor movement for "sexual gratification."
The Times said accounts of alleged abuse of the two then-minors were inde-
pendently verified through interviews with those they confided in decades ago and also in more recent years.
Elements of their stories were also corroborated in documents, emails, itineraries and other writings from union organizers, supporters of Chávez and historians, the story says.
Huerta, who will turn 96 on April 10, told the newspaper that Chávez drove her to a secluded grape field in Delano, California, in 1966 and raped her in the vehicle. She said she never reported the attack out of concerns for police hostility toward Chávez and the labor movement, and because she feared she wouldn't be believed.
"Unfortunately, he used some of his great leadership to abuse women and children — it's really awful," Huerta told the Times.
The charges came as a shock to admirers of Chávez, long considered one of the leading American civil rights figures of the 20th century, and a Latino icon.
"I am horrified by the abuse that we now know Dolores Huerta and other women suffered, but I'm moved by their incredible courage in telling their stories publicly all these years later," Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn said in a statement Wednesday. "What matters most now is that we listen and support them as well as any other woman who suffered this abuse.
"For those of us who grew up admiring the farmworker movement, today's news is heartbreaking. But as in any other civil rights movement,
men were only half the story. The abuses of one man will never diminish the extraordinary sacrifices, accomplishments, and legacy of the women of the farmworker movement. It's time we put them first.
"I think it's time to change the name of our March public holiday to 'Farmworker Day' in Los Angeles County," Hahn said.
The League of United Latin American Citizens said it "unequivocally condemns any form of sexual violence against women and minors and strongly denounces the actions alleged involving the late César Chávez. No individual, regardless of stature or legacy, is above accountability when it comes to protecting and upholding the dignity of others. LULAC stands with all victims of sexual abuse and affirms that no one has the right to exploit or harm children or women under any circumstances. We extend our deepest concern and solidarity to those who have suffered.
"The actions of one person neither reflect nor diminish the integrity of the farmworker movement. LULAC remains unchanged in its support of the farmworker movement and the countless men and women who, for generations, have labored in the fields, often unseen and unheard, to sustain their families and feed this nation."
On Tuesday, the UFW and the César Chávez Foundation issued separate but related statements stating that they will not organize or participate in events celebrating César Chávez Day, which is typically observed on the
same day as his birthday.
The UFW encouraged supporters to instead participate in immigration justice events and acts of service to support farmworkers or empower vulnerable people in their communities.
The union said it learned of allegations that Chávez behaved in ways that are incompatible with the organization's values.
"Some of the reports are family issues, and not our story to tell or our place to comment on. Far more troubling are allegations involving abuse of young women or minors," the UFW said in a statement. "Allegations that very young women or girls may have been victimized are crushing. We have not received any direct reports, and we do not have any firsthand knowledge of these allegations. However, the allegations are serious enough that we feel compelled to take urgent steps to learn more and provide space for people who may have been victimized to find support and to share their stories if that is what they choose."
The César Chávez Foundation echoed those sentiments, adding its members are "deeply shocked and saddened by what we are hearing."
Both organizations said they are developing a "safe and confidential process" for individuals to share their experiences of possible harm, and if they choose to, participate in efforts toward repair and reconciliation.
"In addition, we are investing time and resources to ensure the Foundation promotes and strengthens a

workplace culture that is safe and welcoming for all," the Foundation said in its statement. "We ask for our community's patience as we learn more. Throughout this process, our organization and our partners in the movement will continue our work together to protect and uplift the families and communities that we serve."
The UFW added it will take time to get the process right, which is expected to include trauma-informed services to those who may need it.
"We understand this will be tremendously painful for many and we encourage our community to seek mental health support if they experience distress," UFW officials said. "Today's UFW is a modern and progressive labor union and we will seek to learn from our history."
Chávez died in 1993 at age 66.
In 2025, Los Angeles
commemorated César Chávez Day with a march and rally in Pacoima and a Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, among other events throughout the region.
The Mass served to reflect on the 60th anniversary of the famed Delano Grape Strike. The strike by the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee, a predominantly Filipino and AFL-CIO-backed labor organization, against table grape growers in the Kern County city about 30 miles north of Bakersfield began on Sept. 8, 1965.
The predominantly Mexican National Farmworkers Association, which Chávez founded alongside Huerta, joined the strike eight days later. The two groups merged in August 1966 to create United Farm Workers.
The strike and boycott ended in 1970 after 26 table grape growers signed contracts with UFW.
"immeasurable."
"To the millions who have enjoyed his films all these years, I want you to know here and around the world, how many times Rob told me that it meant everything to him that his work meant something to you. And for those of us
who had the privilege of working with and knowing him and loving him, all we can say is, 'Buddy, what fun we had storming the castle."'
Barbra Streisand, meanwhile, took the stage to honor her "The Way We Were" co-star Robert
Redford, who died in September at age 89.
"Bob had real backbone, on and off the screen," Streisand said. "He spoke up to defend freedom of the rpess, protect the environment and encourage new voices at his Sundance Institute, and some of
whom are up for Oscars tonight, which is so great. He was thoughtful and bold. I called him an intellectual cowboy who blazed his own trail, and won the Academy Award for best director. And I miss him now more than ever."
The Oscar ceremony
was held under tighterthan-usual security, given concerns about possibly retaliatory attacks by Iran in light of U.S. and Israeli military attacks on that nation.
O'Brien comically referenced the stepped-up security during his opening
monologue, quipping that "there are concerns about attacks from both the opera and ballet communities" — a reference to recent widely publicized disparaging remarks about opera and ballet made by bestactor nominee Timothée Chalamet.

The Razzie Redeemer Award, which recognizes performers who rebound from previous Razzie nominations, went to Kate Hudson for her performance in "Song Sung Blue," a musical drama about a Neil Diamond tribute act.
Hudson had previously received Razzie nominations for films including "Music," "Mother's Day" and "My Best Friend's Girl," following her Academy Award-nominated role in "Almost Famous."
The Razzies, highlighting what are deemed the worst films and performances of the past year, are voted on by more than 1,200 members of the Golden Raspberry Foundation from all 50 states and more than two dozen countries, according to organizers.

Picture the bucolic little town of a fairy tale. At its core stand medieval buildings, a square where folks hawk their goods, and perhaps a well to provide water. Beyond the defensive wall radiate agricultural fields, where people toil to bring grains, fruits, and vegetables to market.
Invert that for modern times and you’ve got the idea behind “agrihoods,” communities designed around a central farm. Like a garden in a big city, agrihoods promise to boost food security, reduce temperatures, capture rainwater, and increase biodiversity. As climate change intensifies heat, flooding, and pressure on food systems, agrihoods could be a way to make urban living more resilient — not just more picturesque.
“Developers have a hard time offering open space, because they would like to build more housing,” Vincent Mudd, a partner at the architectural firm Steinberg Hart, which designs agrihoods, told Grist. “One of the few ways to kind of bridge that gap is to be able to use active open space that actually generates commerce.”
On paper, an agrihood is a simple concept: a working farm surrounded by single-family or multifamily housing. Steinberg Hart recently finished two of them in California — one in Santa Clara and another, called Fox Point Farms, in Encinitas. The former, south of San Francisco, features townhouses, market-rate units, and affordable housing, plus a community center and retail shops. The latter, north of San Diego, adds a farm-to-table restaurant, an event venue, and a grocery store, but its housing is primarily for sale instead of rent. “Two different housing programs for two different communities, but built around the sustainability of urban farming,” Mudd said.
While these projects are in relatively affluent areas, Mudd said agri-

two-thirds, or sometimes all the way through the summer, without having to do that,” said Lara Hermanson, cofounder of Farmscape, which helped design, install, and maintain the community’s farm.
A rainwater-capture system, though, comes with an upfront cost that
up as climate change supercharges rainstorms, making them dump more water. Green spaces let all that liquid soak into the ground, mitigating flooding even without deliberate catchment systems.
Still, an agrihood’s farm isn’t going to run itself. From the very beginning

hoods can be built nearly anywhere — though it might require tweaks to zoning rules. “Almost every city has the ability to make that zoning change,” Mudd said, “because it retains commerce, preserves jobs, generates sales tax income from retail, and provides mixed-income, attainable housing.”
(Last year, residents of the agrihood development in Santa Clara alleged that management failures have left them living in unsafe and unhealthy conditions, with delayed repairs, poor air quality, and other issues. The building’s manager, the John Stewart Co., and owner, Core Affordable, did not respond to a request for comment.)
Where it gets more complicated is the logistics of the farm. Water is the big one: Ideally, a farm captures enough rainwater to keep crops hydrated. Because Northern California enjoys a Mediterranean climate of rainy winters and warm, dry summers, the Santa Clara agrihood gathers precipitation and stores it in a tower. “It auto-refills with city water once it gets to a certain point, but we can get
a community garden in a lower-income neighborhood might not be able to afford. If one year the rains stop and drought takes hold, it will have to pay for more water. “Perhaps people with the biggest need for food or nutrition security are also sort of disproportionately facing greater water expenses,” said Lucy Diekmann, an urban agriculture and food systems advisor at the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Even so, one of the many charms of any urban farm or garden is that greenery, and even bare dirt, breaks up the concrete landscape. Historically, cities have been designed to whisk water through gutters and sewers as quickly as possible before it can pool and cause flooding. This strategy struggles to keep
lots into gardens. “It’s incredible what we could do with what we have, and what we could do even more with intentional planning,” said Catherine Brinkley, a social scientist who studies urban agriculture at the University of California, Davis.
In Encinitas, Greg

of planning, Hermanson said, a community must decide what it’s going to grow. The general idea is to get as much yield as possible because space is constrained compared to an industrial farm. So pumpkins probably aren’t a great idea, because those plants take up so much room. Instead, in Santa Clara, Hermanson grows Persian cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, and hot peppers because they’re small.
While an agrihood can’t feasibly provide all the calories residents need, it’s an especially powerful system because the produce it produces is highly nutritious. Scale that food production up across a city, and the impact could be huge: One study found that Los Angeles could meet a third of its need for vegetables by converting vacant
life: the urban heat island effect. As the sun beats down on all that concrete, asphalt, and brick, the landscape absorbs its thermal energy — raising the mercury well above surrounding rural areas — and slowly releases it at night. This is a growing problem for urbanites struggling with ever-higher temperatures. On the flip side, these green spaces help cool the neighborhood because their plants release water vapor, making summer more comfortable for the surrounding community.
An agrihood can also support local biodiversity. Planting native flowering species, for instance, simultaneously beautifies the landscape and attracts pollinating insects, hummingbirds, and bats (which eat mosquitoes, an added bonus). Even the flowers the crops produce provide food for these pollinators, which return the favor by helping the plants reproduce.
Reese, the farm manager at Fox Point Farms, is sending food to the agrihood’s grocery store, so in addition to size he also considers the value of his crops. A lot of that comes down to speed: Arugula grows faster than cantaloupe, meaning Reese can harvest it, send it to market, and grow some more in quick succession. (Given the pleasant climate of Southern California, the farm can grow food for 11, maybe even 12 months of the year.) It can also produce foods that the chefs at the on-site restaurant want. “What is in high demand, and then what grows really fast as well?” Reese said. “I can plant a seed and they can harvest it in a month, or transplant it within two months, so it’s a higher turnover.”
These crops can even benefit from a quirk of city
With the crop varieties decided, an agrihood can figure out how much refrigeration and storage capacity to build out. Those who live there will also have to decide whether to sell produce from a stand or use it in an on-site restaurant. And they’ll need to project the costs of hiring outside help to keep the farm going.
It’s not so simple, then, as just erecting a few buildings around a green space and calling it a day. “All those things need to be figured out before you start putting things on paper and making commitments,” Hermanson said. “Successful farms are well-funded, well-staffed. Everyone does better with clear expectations, clear budgets, and then also the community knows what it is they’re getting.”

FIFA says 2026 World Cup games will be played as scheduled
early a week after Iran's sport minister said the country will not participate in the 2026 World Cup following U.S. and Israeli airstrikes, FIFA announced Tuesday it is working with all participating teams to ensure the tournament goes as planned.
"FIFA is in regular contact with all participating member associations, including (the Islamic Republic of) Iran, to discuss planning for the FIFA World Cup 2026. FIFA is looking forward to all participating teams competing as per the match schedule announced on 6 December 2025," FIFA said in a statement shared on social media.
Iran has attempted to negotiate with FIFA to move its matches to Mexico.
During a morning news conference Tuesday, Sheinbaum confirmed Iran's effort to do so. Sheinbaum noted that once discussions are finalized, she would inform the news media.
Sheinbaum noted that
Mexico has relationships with countries across the globe. She added, "Let's see what FIFA says and move from there."
Iran had been scheduled to play two group-stage matches at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood in June — against New Zealand and Belgium — before facing Egypt in Seattle in its final Group G match.
Iran's participation in the tournament was thrown into doubt after the United States and Israel began launching airstrikes against the nation on Feb. 28. Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed during the first day of the attacks and has since been succeeded by his son, Mojtaba Khamenei.

California Baptist will make its debut in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament on Friday against fourth-seeded Kansas in an East Regional game in San Diego.
The 13th-seeded Lancers (25-8) enter the tournament with a six-game winning streak. The Jayhawks (23-10) are coming off a 69-47 loss to Houston in a semifinal of the Big 12 Tournament on Friday night in Houston, their third loss in five games.
Oddsmakers have made Kansas a 13 1/2-14 1/2-point favorite. ESPN's Matchup Predictor gives the Jayhawks a 92.6% chance of winning, California Baptist a 7.4% chance.
Fourth seeds are 127-33 against 13th seeds since the tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985, a 79.4%
winning percentage. A 13th seed has defeated a fourth seed in five of the past seven tournaments, including twice each in 2018 and 2021.
The Lancers are the 51st overall seed in the field of 68 unveiled Sunday. Kansas is the 15th overall seed.
California Baptist and the Jayhawks have two common opponents — Brigham Young and Colorado. Kansas defeated Colorado, 75-69, Jan. 20 and Brigham Young 90-82 on Jan. 31. The Lancers lost to Colorado, 78-70, Dec. 1, and Brigham Young, 91-60, on Dec. 3.
The 6:45 p.m. game will be televised by CBS.
California Baptist qualified for the tournament for the first time in its fourth season of eligibility with a 63-61 victory over Utah Valley in the championship game of the Western Athletic
World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka retains her rank Monday after defeating Elena Rybakina in the women's final at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6).
Sabalenka saved a match point in the third-set tiebreaker on Rybakina's serve, hitting a blistering return on a 121 mph serve before nailing a cross-court backhand winner to even the tiebreaker at 6-6.
She clinched the match by winning the next two points, the final one on her serve after Rybakina's return went long.
"It was a very difficult match," Rybakina, of Kazakhstan, told the crowd afterward. "Congratulations to Aryna and her team for all the achievements, and this final battle."
It is the first BNP Paribas Open singles title for Sabalenka, the 27-year-old from Belarus who lost to Rybakina in the 2023 women's final at Indian Wells, 7-6, 6-4. Sabalenka also lost last year's
Conference tournament on Saturday night in Las Vegas.
Dominique Daniels Jr. made a 3-point basket with 17 seconds to play to give the Lancers the lead for good in a game with 12 lead changes and 11 ties.
Forward Isaac Davis missed a potential gametying alley-oop dunk with two seconds to play for the Wolverines (25-8) in front of a crowd announced at 1,511 at Orleans Arena.
Under NCAA rules, a program transitioning from Division II to Division I is ineligible to compete in championship events for four seasons. California Baptist began their four-year transition from Division II to Division I in the 2018-19 academic year.
"The rationale behind the rule is to allow programs to get up to speed, to build

the necessary compliance, facilities, scholarship requirements and other standards to satisfy Division I membership," Meghan Durham Wright, an NCAA associate

director of communications, told City News Service.

BNP Paribas Open final to Mirra Andreeva, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. "Thank God I got this

trophy," Sabalenka told the crowd at the podium after the match. "What a week: getting a puppy, getting engaged and winning a title. I'll remember it for the rest of my life."
Sabalenka improved to
17-1 on the year, with her only loss coming to Rybakina in the Australian Open final, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. The BNP Paribas Open was Sabalenka's first tournament since the Australian Open.
Sabalenka earned $1,511,380 for the tournament title. Rybakina received

$612,340 as the runner-up. Sinner defeats Medvedev Second-seeded Jannik Sinner defeated 11th-seeded Daniil Medvedev, 7-6(6), 7-6(4), in Sunday's men's final of the $9,415,725 BNP Paribas Open, completing the tournament without losing a set in his six matches.
The Italian won the final seven points of the match after trailing 0-4 in the second
set tiebreaker.
"I kept believing and kept pushing," Sinner said when asked about his tiebreak turnaround. "I went for my shots a little more. A third set, we would have started even, so I tried my best to close it out and I am very happy. It was an incredible ending."
Neither player had his serve broken.
"I would like to congratu-
late Jannik, amazing tennis, tough to play against you," the Russian said during the trophy ceremony. "I tried my best, but big congrats to you for everything you are doing."
The victory increased Sinner's lead in the head-tohead series to 9-7. Sinner earned $1,511,380 for the tournament victory. Medvedev received $612,340 as the tournament runner-up.

Residents throughout the Inland Empire and elsewhere were invited last week to register their votes in an annual survey on their favorite parks in the region and what attractions they enjoy most.
The California State Parks Foundation opened its 2026 Best of California State Parks online poll March 11, asking participants to cast their votes at calparks.org/votebestof26 through April 11.
"The Best of California's State Parks poll is a fun opportunity for Californians to share what they love about their parks," State Parks Foundation Executive Director Rachel Norton said. "There are so many different types of parks to explore in California, whether you're looking for a day at the beach, a hike among the redwoods, or a chance to learn about history."

Citing data from the state, Vet Voice Foundation noted that Native Americans are 10% of veterans who live in California and have highest per-capita involvement — five times the national average — of any ethnic or racial group in the U.S. military.

“We became a voice for them and would continue to do that,” Pearce said.
Several parks with tracts partly or wholly in Riverside County are included in the survey.

The California desert is also a place where many veterans seek solace and time in the outdoors after returning from service, according to the Foundation. Veterans often find significant mental and physical health benefits from spending time in natural settings such as national parks and monuments.
Vet Voice officials pointed to the especially significant connection veterans have with the California desert because of its military heritage. During World War II, locations in the California desert were part of the broader Desert Training Center, where Gen. George Patton prepared American troops for harsh desert warfare abroad. Hundreds of thousands of U.S. troops came to the Desert Training Center, and traces of this history can still be found and honored.
Over the past year, Vet Voice officials said they have heard from many veterans who are concerned about the affect rollbacks
“Support for public lands is broadly bipartisan,” Goldbeck added. “With public lands under unprecedented attack right now, veterans are leading the charge to ensure public land that belongs to all Americans remains in public hands.”
In February a statement to HeySoCal.com from the U.S. Interior Department, which oversees BLM, said, “There are no plans to privatize any public lands managed by Interior. Additionally, we cannot speculate on future actions that might involve national monuments.”
Pearce, a Republican who represented New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District, said if confirmed as BLM director he will meet with a Southern California Intertribal Commission to learn more about the recently designated Chuckwalla National Monument and engage in “meaningful” consultation with tribal leaders.

President Joe Biden established the 624,270acre Chuckwalla National Monument in Riverside and Imperial counties shortly before he left office in January 2025.
Founded in 2009, Vet Voice Foundation is a national nonprofit "that mobilizes veterans and military families to strengthen democracy and serve their communities," according to the organization, which "works to ensure that national parks, monuments, forests, and other shared landscapes remain protected for future generations while highlighting the deep connection many veterans have to the outdoors after their military service."

Home sales rose significantly last month in the Inland Empire and statewide as slightly more favorablemortgagerates encouraged buyers to enter the market, the California Association of Realtors announced Tuesday.
Sales of existing, singlefamily homes in California totaled 274,820 in February on a seasonally adjusted annualized rate, up 7% from January's total, but down 0.3% from February 2025.
In the Inland Empire, sales were up 9% from last month, but down 3.7% from last year, while in Riverside County sales were up 20% from January but down 4% from February of 2025.
"Following a soft start to the year, the housing market regained momentum in February, with both sales and prices showing solid gains," CAR President Tamara Suminski said in a statement. "The conflict in the Middle East is creating some uncertainty
for the broader economy and financial markets, which could lead to some short-term hesitation in the housing market. We remain hopeful though that the situation will stabilize in the weeks ahead, allowing market fundamentals and buyer and seller confidence to reassert themselves."
Statewide prices were also up last month, with California's median home price rising 0.9% from January to February, to $830,370. That represents a 0.2% increase from one year ago.
In the Inland Empire, the average price rose 1.1% in February to $601,350, 1.6% lower than February 2025. Riverside County's average price was down 1.3% last month to $631,000, which is 2.4% lower than one year ago.
San Bernardino Count showed a 14.7% drop in home sales over the month, but sales were 0.5% higher than at the same time last year, according to CAR.
By City News Service

DThe average sale price was $510,000 in February, $500,990 in January and $490,000 in February 2025.
"While mortgage rates remain below year-ago levels, they recently jumped to their highest level in seven months and could temper buyer momentum as we head into the spring homebuying season," CAR
Senior Vice President and Chief Economist Jordan Levine said. "However, many homeowners remain locked in to historically low rates, and inventory remains tight, so any stabilization in rates could help bolster home prices in the spring market despite ongoing affordability and economic challenges."
The county with the highest median home price in California in February was Mono County at $2.35 million, after increasing 50% from last month. The lowest median price was Lassen County's $199,000, after a 22% drop from last month.
ozens of elementary, middle and high schoolstudents received awards for a variety of presentations in Riverside County's National History Day competition, exhibiting what Superintendent of Schools Edwin Gomez Monday called "distinction" and "wisdom" for the caliber of their projects.
The 2026 contest, themed "Revolution,Reaction, Reform in History," ran all day Saturday at Canyon Springs High School in Moreno Valley, culminating in the announcement of awards going to 137 of the 471 students who participated.
"The extraordinary student projects on display at Riverside County History Day are a powerful example of students integrating their curiosity and creativity with the depth of knowledge that

comes from studying history," Gomez said Monday. "Our award-winning historians will not only represent the county with distinction at the state competition, but the wisdom they have gained will provide a timeless competitive advantage as they pursue their educational and professional endeavors."
The students who took part hailed from six public school districts and six charter schools or private academies.
All of the teams comprising the 137 students who received accolades will be invited to compete in the National History Day-California State Competition set for May 1-3 at Cal State Sacramento.
According to the Office of Education, winners showcased a mix of projects oriented to this year's theme.
One of the elementary
school student winners was Alisa Yi from the CoronaNorco Unified School District, who racked up points for her presentation "Yellowstone: A Revolutionary Idea That Changed America."
At the junior level, among the standouts was Ayesha Ashfag from the Riverside Unified School District, who presented a documentary titled "Echoes of Silence: Remembering Cambodia's Revolution of Death."
In the senior category, among the winners were Ava Provencio and Paris Villegas from the Moreno Valley Unified School District, who jointly offered "Liberty at the Guillotine; How Popular Revolution Destroyed the French Monarchy and Sparked the Reign of Terror."

COMPLAINT FOR DAMAGES
1. NEGLIGENCE
2. NEGLIGENCE PER SE
3. NEGLIGENT HIRING, TRAINING, SUPERVISION, RETENTION AND ENTRUSTMENT
JURY TRIAL DEMANDED
STATEMENT OF FACTS
1. On or about October 10, 2023, Plaintiff Sage Hayashi ("Plaintiff") was lawfully operating her vehicle, driving westbound on State Route 118 in Los Angeles County, California. At all relevant times, Plaintiff was a restrained driver and following the rules of the road.
2. At the same time, Defendant Michael Hahn ("Hahn"), acting within the scope and course of his employment with Defendant United Rentals (North America), Inc., ("United") was driving a semitruck with an attached trailer ("the Commercial Vehicle" owned by United, traveling westbound on State Route 118.
3. The Commercial Vehicle had a GVWR exceeding 26,000 pounds. Defendants Hahn, United, Holman, and Bouvet were required to comply with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Provisions ("FMCSR") provisions applicable to heavy commercial motor vehicles. These regulations specifically recognize that vehicles of such weight and mass create substantially greater risks of catastrophic injury and therefore impose mandatory safety obligations on both drivers and carriers.
4. Suddenly and without warning, Hahn changed lanes and struck the vehicle, a big rig, directly in front of him, which had slowed for heavy traffic. At the time of this collision, Hahn was traveling at approximately 78 mph in a 55 mph zone for big rigs, in violation of CVC § 22350 and 22406.
5. The impact of this collision caused a multiplevehicle collision, and the middle vehicle was pushed into the rear of Plaintiff's vehicle.
6. As a direct and proximate result of the collision, Plaintiff suffered serious injuries, including but not limited to traumatic brain injury, postconcussive syndrome, posttraumatic headaches, cognitive impairment, lumbar spine injuries that include but are not limited to an annular tear at L5S1, and persistent physical and emotional pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, disfigurement, physical impairment, inconvenience, grief, anxiety, humiliation, and emotional distress.
7. As a direct and proximate result of the collision, Plaintiff has sustained and continues to sustain economic damages including but not limited past and future medical
expenses, past and future loss of earnings, and loss of earning capacity.
8. The impact of the collision caused Ms. Hayashi to suffer significant injuries that exceed the jurisdictional minimum of this Court.
PARTIES, JURISDICTION, AND VENUE
9. Plaintiff Sage Hayashi is a resident of Los
13.
directly supervised or ratified the hiring, training, and safety practices of the logistics and driver workforce, including Hahn, and exercised managerial authority over the policies and practices that gave rise to the violations herein alleged.
14. Plaintiff is unaware of the true names and capacities of Defendants sued herein as DOES 1 through 50 inclusive and therefore sue these Defendants by such fictitious names. Plaintiff is informed and believes, and thereon alleges, that each of the fictitiously named Defendants proximately caused damages to Plaintiff as alleged herein and/or is responsible for the acts complained of herein. Plaintiff will amend this Complaint to allege their true names and capacities when ascertained.
15. This Court has jurisdiction over this matter, as the events giving rise to this action occurred in Los Angeles County, California, and the Defendants have sufficient minimum contacts with California for this Court to exercise personal jurisdiction. The amount in controversy exceeds the jurisdictional minimum of this Court.
16. Venue is proper in this Court because the event giving rise to this action occurred in Chatsworth, California.
PUNITIVE DAMAGES ALLEGATIONS
17. Plaintiff realleges and incorporates as if fully stated herein each and every allegation contained above and incorporate the same herein by this reference as though set forth in full.
18. Prior to Michael Hahn's hiring by United Rentals in approximately July 2022, Hahn had been involved in at least two prior vehicle accidents. Despite United Rentals' awareness of these accidents, they nonetheless hired Michael Hahn to drive commercial Class A vehicles. Further, Hahn, while driving for United, had 21 hard braking events in the year 2023, the most of any driver in the United San Fernando Valley Hub, and was ranked last in the metropolitan region (#314.) These incidents placed United and Holman on actual and/or constructive notice that Hahn was an unsafe driver who posed an unreasonable risk of harm to the motoring public.
19. Despite this history, Defendants United, Holman, and Bouvet failed to properly investigate, monitor, or take corrective action concerning Hahn's driving record. They nevertheless hired, retained, and entrusted Hahn with the operation of a tractortrailer weighing in excess of 26,000 pounds on public highways, in violation of their duties under state law and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, including 49 CFR §§, 391.25, and 391.51. 20. Defendants failed to adequately investigate Hahn's prior accident history, which included at least two prior accidents (2019Mecklenburg, SC, 2021Gaston, SC). They failed to conduct effective annual reviews and monitoring of his driving record despite repeated unsafe events, including 21 hard braking events in 2023, in violation of 49 CFR §391.25.. They failed to monitor driver logs and compliance under 49 CFR $395.8, despite Hahn sleeping in his rig and exhibiting fatiguerelated conduct. 21. Therefore, it was completely foreseeable to Defendants United, Fleet Lease and Bouvet, that Hahn would be involved in reckless driving which lead to the crash on October 10, 2023 when he struck Plaintiff. At the time of the crash, Hahn was operating the subject commercial motor

Aswath of land with historic ties to the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians was back under the tribe's domain Friday.
"The return of these 656 acres in upper Palm Canyon is the restoration of responsibility," Tribal Chairman of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians Reid Milanovich said in a statement. "Since time immemorial, our people have stewarded these mountains and waterways. We are grateful to Friends of the Desert Mountains, the Coachella Valley Mountains Conservancy and the state of California for their partnership in advancing land
conservation through Tribal stewardship."
"This land returns strengthens our sovereignty, protects sacred and ecological resources and ensures future generations will continue to benefit from the cultural and environmental legacy of these lands. Conservation is strongest when guided by Tribal leadership rooted in generations of ancestral stewardship," Milanovich added.
The return of unceded land back to the tribe was approved by the Coachella Valley Mountains Conservancy's board on Nov. 17, 2025 for conservation and protection of cultural resources
that sits in the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains conservation area. With this new addition, more than 1,200 acres has been returned since 2024. The land is critical to habitat residing in the area, including the peninsular ranges' Desert Bighorn sheep, and the land contains resources vital to wildlife and replenish the aquifer underneath the Coachella Valley.
"Since 1991, our conservancy has worked to put over 100,000 acres of land into conservation, and we couldn't think of a better steward for this parcel than ACBCI," CVMC Executive Director Elizabeth King said. Additionally, the land

return aids in California's 30-by-30 goal, an initiative to conserve 30% of state's land and coastal water by 2030.
"Tribal ownership and stewardship of lands is critical to achieving these goals," officials said.
The tribe plans to continue managing the "rugged parcels" as conservations lands.

Anartexhibition created by eighthgrade art students from Toro Canyon Middle School in Thermal was on display Monday in the latest installment of Augustine Casino's Seven Feathers Galley in Coachella.
The students were
invited to create artwork that explores their culture, including family traditions, local festivals and stories passed down through traditions, and land, which includes the desert landscape they call home. The result yielded a vibrant collection of works in an exhibition titled "Mi
Gente, Mi Tierra" (My People, My Land).
"We are incredibly moved by the talent and perspective these students have brought to Seven Feathers," Lindsay Grant, chief marketing officer at Augustine Casino, said in a statement. "The East Valley
is a community built on hard work and rich traditions. Seeing these students honor the East Valley so beautifully reminds us why we created this gallery; to provide a platform for the authentic voices of the Coachella Valley."
Officials said the latest
exhibition is a special moment for the gallery as it deviates from showcasing art works by established local professionals, and the gallery continued its mission of a community-focused space where dining meets local culture.
Seven Feathers Gallery
was established as part of Seven Feathers restaurant in 2025 to celebrate the culture and local talent of the Coachella Valley. The artwork is open to all restaurant guests and casino patrons. The casino is located at 84-001 Avenue 54.

A34-year-old former Eastvale high school teacher who engaged in sex acts with a boy in one of her classes pleaded guilty Monday to lewd acts on a child under 15 years old and other charges.
Amanda Leigh Quinonez admitted the felony charge, along with two counts each of sexual penetration with a foreign object and providing sexually explicit material to a minor, as well as one count each of oral copulation of a child and annoying a minor. The admissions were made
under a pretrial agreement with the Riverside County District Attorney's Office.
Superior Court Judge Joshlyn Pulliam scheduled a sentencing hearing for May 29 at the Riverside Hall of Justice. A prospective term of imprisonment was not published in court minutes.
Quinonez remains free on a $50,000 bond. According to sheriff's investigators, the defendant, formerly a language arts teacher and water polo coach at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, began communicating with the
victim, whose identity was not disclosed, in the fall of 2020, leading to multiple encounters.
Quinonez sent the youth nude photos, leading to intimate meetings, according to investigators. The locations of the meetings were not specified.
Sheriff's detectives were alerted to the acts by unnamed witnesses. Sufficient evidence was gathered to justify an arrest warrant, and Quinonez was taken into custody without incident in April 2022. She posted bail almost immedi-
ately.
At the time, Eleanor Roosevelt High Principal Greg Anderson publicly acknowledged there had been an "inappropriate relationship." In a letter sent to parents and guardians, he affirmed the Corona-Norco Unified School District has "zero tolerance for any behavior that endangers our students."
Quinonez was initially placed on unpaid administrative leave and then subsequently dismissed.
She had been a teacher at Roosevelt since 2016.
