Greater Los Angeles has long been recognized for its creativity, and its ever-evolving cocktail culture is one of the clearest expressions of that spirit. Across the city and the San Gabriel Valley, the craft cocktail scene has matured into an art form—where mixology meets storytelling, and every sip is an experience.
Bartenders are no longer just pouring drinks; they’re curating menus that highlight seasonal ingredients, small-batch spirits, and innovative techniques. Smoke infusions, housemade bitters, and fresh herbs from local farms are just some of the touches turning cocktails into culinary creations. The result? Drinks that are as visually stunning as they are flavorful.
Neighborhood bars and speakeasies are also embracing themes that make the experience immersive—whether it’s a hidden entrance behind a bookstore, a rooftop with skyline views, or lounges that spotlight Latin, Asian, or Mediterranean influences. Each stop tells a different story, offering locals endless options to explore.
But it’s not only about the cocktails themselves—it’s about the culture around them. Craft bars are becoming gathering places where friends connect, dates spark, and communities celebrate. With its mix of innovation and tradition, Los Angeles has raised the bar, making the cocktail scene one of the city’s most exciting cultural movements.

Nothing in your home is more important for the comfort and safety of your family than your heating and air conditioning, which can also serve to filter the air to remove viruses, bacteria, organic compounds and allergens like dust, pollen and pet dander.
No other appliance in your home is as expensive to repair or replace as your home’s furnace or air conditioner and it benefits greatly from professional maintenance.
The readers of HeySoCal have
selected Air-Tro as their Readers’ Choice HVAC company for 2025, just like they have every year since 2014. Twelve straight years of earning the trust of their community is an honor. Air-Tro staff bring technical know-how combined with compassion, concern and a desire to earn the trust of their customers. As a family-owned firm since 1969, they bring three generations of expertise. For capable, professional service from a company you can trust, give Air-Tro a call.

In a city as diverse and dynamic as Los Angeles, dining out is more than a meal—it’s a way of life. From the San Gabriel Valley to the Westside, restaurants remain the heartbeat of Greater LA’s culture, bringing people together over flavors that span the globe.
What makes LA’s food scene stand out is its constant evolution. Michelin-starred restaurants share the spotlight with hole-in-the-wall gems, food trucks, and pop-ups. One night it’s handmade pasta in a candlelit courtyard, the next it’s tacos from a family-run stand that’s been perfecting recipes for generations. Each experience tells a
story, rooted in tradition yet shaped by innovation.
In the San Gabriel Valley especially, dining is a community experience. Families gather for dim sum on Sunday mornings, friends meet up at hot pot restaurants, and late-night diners line up for boba and street food. It’s a culture where food is not just nourishment, but celebration.
Even as takeout and delivery have grown, Angelenos continue to crave the connection that only comes from sharing a table. Dining out isn’t just about what’s on the plate—it’s about who you share it with. And in Greater LA, that’s what makes every bite unforgettable.

Greater Los Angeles has never shied away from a sweet tooth, but in 2025, desserts are as much about artistry and innovation as indulgence. From classic French confections to Asianinspired delights, local bakeries and cafés are redefining how Angelenos end a meal—or treat themselves any time of day.
Mochi continues to rise in popularity, with chewy, colorful bites filled with everything from traditional red bean to inventive flavors like matcha latte or cookies-and-cream. Meanwhile, macarons remain a staple, their jewel-toned shells and endless flavor combinations making them both Instagram-worthy and irresistible.
Beyond these favorites, hybrid
desserts are trending: croissantdoughnut mashups, boba-infused pastries, and ice cream layered with unexpected toppings. Plant-based sweets are also taking center stage, as more pastry chefs experiment with dairy-free and gluten-free ingredients that don’t sacrifice flavor or texture. What ties these trends together is the experience. Desserts are no longer just the end of a meal—they’re events in themselves, meant to be shared, photographed, and savored. In Greater LA, where creativity thrives, the dessert scene reflects the city itself: diverse, vibrant, and always evolving. In 2025, one thing is certain: dessert isn’t just having a moment—it’s setting the tone for what’s next in food culture. From Mochi to Macarons:

In a world where almost everything can be searched, streamed, or shipped in seconds, there’s still no substitute for having a trusted local expert by your side. From accountants and attorneys to real estate agents, contractors, and consultants, professional services are the backbone of our communities— and their value is only growing. What sets local professionals apart isn’t just their knowledge, but their connection to the people and places they serve. A generic website can’t match the understanding of someone who knows your neighborhood, your market, and the challenges unique to our region. Whether it’s grooming a beloved dog, guiding a family through
a home purchase, or getting a vehicle repaired, trusted professionals bring both expertise and peace of mind.
The demand for reliable local services has surged in recent years, as more residents recognize the importance of building long-term relationships with experts who are invested in the community’s success. These professionals are more than service providers—they’re partners who ensure stability, offer guidance, and create trust.
As Readers’ Choice highlights the best in professional services, one thing is clear: in today’s fast-paced, digitalfirst world, local experts matter more than ever.

Why Shopping Local Matters
More Than Ever
In the age of one-click shopping and doorstep delivery, it can be tempting to default to big online retailers. But across Greater Los Angeles, independent shops are proving why local still matters—and how every purchase has the power to strengthen community spirit.
When you step into a neighborhood bookstore, boutique, or specialty market, you’re not just buying a product—you’re supporting a dream. Local business owners bring unique offerings, personalized service, and a genuine investment in the neighborhoods they serve. These shops create gathering places where customers aren’t just transactions—they’re neighbors.
The impact goes beyond
convenience. Studies show that money spent at independent shops circulates back into the community, supporting jobs, schools, and local services. By contrast, online giants and big-box retailers often redirect profits away from the neighborhoods where customers live.
Shopping local is also about preserving character. Independent shops give each city its own identity—whether it’s a beloved mom-and-pop store that’s been around for decades or a new boutique bringing fresh ideas to the community.
As Readers’ Choice celebrates the businesses that make our region thrive, it’s clear that shopping local isn’t just a feel-good choice. It’s an investment in the health, culture, and future of our local communities.

From Pilates to Pickleball: The Fastest-Growing Fitness Trends
Locally Health and wellness in Southern California has never looked more dynamic. Today, fitness is less about rigid routines and more about community, variety, and fun. From private studios to outdoor courts, locals are finding new ways to stay active—and stay connected.
Pilates remains a favorite, offering low-impact strength and flexibility training that draws everyone from busy professionals to retirees. Yoga, too, continues to thrive, with studios bringing mindfulness and movement into daily life. But the newest star on the scene is pickleball. This fast-paced paddle sport has exploded in popularity, filling parks and recreation centers
with players of all ages. Its mix of accessibility, social interaction, and lighthearted competition has made it a true community sport.
Beyond individual workouts, fitness is becoming increasingly social. Group classes, charity 5Ks, outdoor bootcamps, and even hiking meetups are building bonds while promoting healthier lifestyles. Local gyms and wellness centers are also expanding their offerings, blending fitness with holistic health services like nutrition coaching, recovery lounges, and mental wellness programs.
In Southern California, staying healthy isn’t just about exercise— it’s about finding joy, balance, and community. And whether you’re holding a yoga pose or a pickleball paddle, the future of fitness looks stronger than ever.

Greater Los Angeles has always been a melting pot of flavors, and this year’s dining scene proves that the entrée is getting a bold, global makeover. Local chefs are moving beyond traditional definitions of a “main course,” blending influences from across the world to create dishes that are as adventurous as the diners who enjoy them.
Think Korean barbecue tacos, Mediterranean-inspired grain bowls, or Japanese-Peruvian fusion plates. Menus everywhere are highlighting cross-cultural creativity, reflecting the diverse communities that call LA home. These global influences aren’t just side notes—they’re taking center stage, making entrées the canvas for innovation.
Chefs are also rethinking how entrées are presented. Plant-forward mains are gaining momentum, with seasonal vegetables and hearty grains reimagined as star attractions rather than supporting players. Meanwhile, sustainable sourcing—whether it’s seafood, meats, or produce—is shaping how dishes are crafted and enjoyed.
For diners, this shift means every outing feels like a culinary journey, right in their own neighborhood. Whether at a fine-dining restaurant or a casual local spot, entrées are evolving into experiences that celebrate culture, creativity, and connection. In Greater LA, the modern main course is no longer defined by tradition—it’s defined by possibility.

For 19 years, Neighborhood Music School & Store has taught the art of music and the art of learning. "Experience the Excellence...Enjoy the Process" is their motto. While musical excellence is their natural aspiration, as artists, personal enjoyment and human connection is what they really seek to experience, teach, and provide for their audiences.
President Carolyn Iga attributes their success to “Commitment to growing in good communication, integrity, character and respect” as they get involved in the community. This is the ‘why’ behind why

Since 1892, Huntington Health has proudly played a part in Pasadena’s growth, health and vitality. For 133 years, Huntington Health has grown from a 16-bed hospital to a nationally recognized health care provider.
Huntington Health, a Cedars-Sinai affiliate, has a longstanding and ongoing commitment to providing affordable, high-quality care to the San Gabriel Valley with a focus on excellent, compassionate patient care.
Huntington Hospital’s 24/7 specialist coverage ensures a hospital-based physician (hospitalist) is always available for patients who need general,
obstetrical or critical care. And as a leader in nursing care, it is one of only 10% of hospitals nationwide to have achieved Magnet designation, the gold standard in nursing.
Huntington is home to the largest emergency department and only Level II trauma center in the San Gabriel Valley. Its Family Birth Center and Level IIIB neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) give babies the safest start to life. Leading cancer care, cardiology services, orthopedic care and advanced robotic surgery — among many other services — are available to all who turn to Huntington for care.

they do what they do. “Love and care for people is what we seek to do every day with the students, parents, businesses, community leaders, and those in need of help and encouragement who come our way,” says Iga.
Neighborhood Music School & Store has teachers, interns, and staff who work and volunteer year after year using music and music education as a means of showing love, care, and hope to the community. “We are all deeply invested in the development of the character of the person while teaching the skill set and art of music,” Iga enthuses.

Natural Products and Self-Care Rituals on the Rise
In Greater Los Angeles, beauty is taking on a fresh new meaning—one that goes beyond makeup counters and salon chairs. Today’s beauty movement is as much about wellness and self-care as it is about style, with natural products and mindful rituals leading the way.
Clean beauty has become a defining trend, as more people seek skincare and cosmetic products free of harsh chemicals. Local salons, spas, and boutiques are meeting the demand with lines that highlight organic ingredients, eco-friendly packaging, and cruelty-free practices. For consumers, it’s not just about looking good—it’s about
feeling good and making healthier choices for themselves and the planet.
At the same time, self-care rituals are becoming a cornerstone of modern beauty. From facials that focus on hydration and healing, to spa treatments designed for relaxation, beauty services are evolving into full wellness experiences. Even daily routines, like skin cycling and at-home treatments, reflect a broader shift toward long-term care rather than quick fixes.
The new definition of beauty is holistic, natural, and deeply personal. And with Greater Los Angeles leading the charge, local businesses are redefining what it means to glow—inside and out.

The Rise of Dual-Language and STEM Programs
Education in the greater Los Angeles area is evolving fast—and local schools are leading the way. From innovative classrooms to afterschool programs, educators are rethinking how to prepare students not just for college, but for a lifetime of learning.
One standout trend is the rise of dual-language immersion programs. Districts across the region now offer instruction in Spanish, Mandarin, and other languages, giving students the chance to become fluent while strengthening cognitive skills and cultural awareness. In a community as diverse as ours, these programs don’t just build academic skills—they build bridges.
At the same time, STEM programs are sparking excitement from elementary school on up. Robotics clubs, coding workshops, and hands-on science projects are moving learning beyond textbooks and into real-world problem solving. Local partnerships with colleges and tech companies are also helping students see how today’s lessons can turn into tomorrow’s careers. Together, these advances are reshaping education into something more dynamic, inclusive, and future-focused. With an emphasis on innovation and lifelong skills, local schools are helping students grow into adaptable, globally minded learners—and ensuring our community stays strong well into the future.

Where to Catch the Best Outdoor Movies and Concerts Under the Stars
Greater Los Angeles has always been the entertainment capital, but in recent years, the local scene has taken on a new vibe—one that brings people together under the open sky. From outdoor movie nights to live music in the park, Angelenos are finding fresh ways to enjoy culture, community, and California’s perfect evenings.
Outdoor cinemas have become a staple, with screenings popping up in parks, rooftops, and even historic landmarks. Families spread out picnic blankets, friends gather with takeout, and moviegoers experience everything from Hollywood blockbusters to cult classics— complete with a backdrop of stars
overhead. It’s more than a film; it’s an experience.
Live music is just as alive outdoors. Summer concert series across the San Gabriel Valley and Los Angeles offer everything from jazz in intimate courtyards to big-name acts in amphitheaters and botanical gardens. These events often highlight local talent while drawing in national performers, creating a unique mix of community and big-city energy.
As traditional venues bounce back and new outdoor options flourish, the entertainment scene here is more dynamic than ever. Whether it’s a movie, a concert, or a festival, the best shows aren’t always indoors—sometimes the real magic happens when the lights dim and the stars come out.

You might know April A. Verlato from her time on Arcadia’s City Council but for the past 25 years she has been the proud owner of the Law Offices of April A. Verlato.
Her secret to more than two decades of practice? Holding herself to “the highest standards for the services provided” to clients and developing a personal relationship with them. “This builds trust and allows my clients to follow my advice and recommendations which gives them the best outcome,” Verlato shares.
This philosophy has paid off for Verlato whose practice is largely referral based. “I get most of my clients from

referrals by past clients, doctors that I've worked with on other injury cases and from other attorneys who opposed me in court and lost. I have to deliver results in order to get those referrals. And I train my staff to have the same philosophy that today's client is tomorrow's referral.” Unlike many other lawyers, Verlato makes sure she is accessible to clients. “I am approachable. I am local. All these things set me apart from many of the attorneys who rely on advertising to get their clients,” she says. “Many times people don't realize that the ‘billboard’ attorneys don't meet with you and they have non-attorneys handling their entire case.”
