Readers’ Choice Recognizes the ‘Power of the Press’
R
eaders’ Choice is the annual tip-of-the-hat, if you will, to local tradesmen and women, selected by local readers as the favorite in their chosen profession. This year’s theme, as you will note, is paying homage to the First Amendment and the extraordinary “Power of the Press.” It is a tribute to the tireless efforts of reporters and photojournalists who dig deep to get the story - the facts and ultimately make social change. The press has not only made an impact on world change throughout the years, but also on local communities, such as Arcadia, Monrovia, Pasadena and Sierra Madre. For the past 22 years, Beacon Media News, publisher of Arcadia Weekly, Monrovia Weekly, Pasadena Independent, and Sierra Madre Weekly (AMPS), has brought local communities insightful, thoughtful coverage on news, education, arts & entertainment, events, high school sports, and community leaders. When the Arcadia High School Constitution Team won the state championship, Arcadia Weekly was there. When the Monrovia High School Wildcats Varsity Football team won CIF Championships, Monrovia Weekly was there, and when a major $6 million embezzlement was discovered in the City of Pasadena, Pasadena Independent was there. The overwhelming evidence of the “Power of the Press” has also transpired into spotlighting favorite places and people within our local communities. Those favorites can be found in this year’s Readers’ Choice, along with recognition to readers’ recommended choices.

heir vendors sell antique, vintage, collectible, and handmade items, so you won’t find anything new or mass produced there. Something people might not know about the PCC Flea Market is that the proceeds from every market benefit student scholarships and activities. They award over $40,000 to students in scholarships each year and support many student leadership programs on campus. You will see students incorporated in all they do: from working in the office to making sure the market stays clean, to fundraising for student clubs. The market was even started by students back in 1977!

urrito Express is one of Pasadena’s best burrito and Mexican food restaurants! If you are looking for a quick meal that is made fresh and tastes delicious, stop on by. They are conveniently located on the corner of Washington Boulevard and Sierra Bonita Avenue. They’ve been serving up delicious food since 1978. Their recipes are time honoring and still delicious to this day. They’d have more to say, but they will leave the food to speak on their behalf. Go down and try any one of their delicious dishes. A special thanks to their regular customers for their support all these years. To their neighbors who have not yet visited them, they extend a warm invitation. Go and see what so many of their neighbors have discovered; great Mexican food, great service and a family friendly atmosphere. Go see why Burrito Express has been a staple in Pasadena for almost 40 years. They look forward to serving you! Hours Monday – Saturday: 8 a.m. – 9 p.m.

os Tacos restaurant is owned by Fidel and Martha Leos. Los Tacos was established in 1986, and Fidel was the first person to bring soft shell tacos, a traditional Mexican dish, to the Pasadena area. Currently, Los Tacos has a location in Pasadena and serves authentic Mexican cuisine in a clean and friendly atmosphere. Fidel has been in the restaurant business for 40 years and prides himself in serving others. Previously to opening Los Tacos, he was the maitre d’ at Maldonado’s Supper Club, a four star restaurant in Pasadena where he developed a palate for fine foods and wines. After the birth of his first daughter, Diana, Fidel decided to open Los Tacos restaurant where he fused his knowledge of fine foods and the traditional recipes he learned from his parents and memories of his childhood in Mexico. For several years, Fidel was on a mission to explore and develop recipes and shortly after the birth of his second daughter, Audrey, Los Tacos opened its doors at 1 W. California Blvd. in Pasadena. Los Tacos has been featured in numerous magazine and newspaper articles, and has been active in supporting sports teams in the area as well as various private charities.
Its clean and authentic dishes have been enjoyed by several generations in the Pasadena area. Fidel continues to oversee the daily operations of the restaurant. His supportive wife, Martha, helps to promote and improve Los Tacos year after year. Fidel works hard to maintain a level of excellence at Los Tacos restaurant and is passing down his knowledge and love of food and service to his daughters Diana, Audrey, and Amy.

ameron’s has been around for 30 years and is currently presided over by proprietor Pete Gallanis. They like seafood. And for decades, the freshest fish and seafood selections in the valley have been swimming straight to Pasadena for their customers to eat. They have also recently added smoked salmon to their wide variety of fresh seafood. Regulars at Cameron’s are truly regulars—some of them have been dining there since it opened 30 year ago! Many regulars go to watch the Dodger game while drinking their giant martini at the bar. Pete watches closely to make sure the fare is fresh, high-quality, and flavorful. “Some of my regulars want their halibut the way they’ve had it every week since 1990. But we aim to keep trying new recipes and presentations as well.” And for the one in your party who doesn’t care for seafood, Cameron’s has “landlubber” dishes available, including a kid’s menu, a full selection of smoked tri-tip, pulled pork prime rib, and smoked chicken. So there’s every reason for you to visit this Pasadena landmark soon!

He attended Holy Angels grade school and La Salle High School. There was no hesitation, when he graduated from Northwestern Dental School, to open a dental practice in his hometown. He believes without question that you must treat patients like family and that advanced dental technologies should be made available to all patients. he Dollmakers’ Kattywompus is, above all, a family business, and that’s probably why they have so much fun with the moms and dads, grandmas and grandpas, and all the kids who have grown up in the store over the years. Not many people can say that they truly love going to work every day, but the staff at Dollmakers’ truly can. They eat, sleep, and drink toys and music, and love every minute of their time in Old Town Monrovia. In fact, Dollmakers’ loves toys so much that the owner’s kids and grandkids have worked in the toy industry for years, designing and marketing for companies like PlayHut, JAKKS Pacific, Imperial Toys, Mattel, and many more. Our goal is to help our customers with information, options, or opinions. Then, when they have decided on how they would like to proceed, we perform our plumbing service in a courteous and professional manner.”

he fact is, there isn't much more to the average agent than the agent themselves. Most agents operate a oneperson show - and they're probably breaking their backs trying to do a good job for their clients. Most agents couldn't really work any harder than they're already working. Team Nuvision knows, because they used to do it this way. But they don't anymore because they found that their client's suffered from their good intentions. The fact is, you may be sympathetic to the fact that your agent is working as hard as humanly possible, but if the quality and profitability of your home sale suffers as a result of them trying to do everything themselves . . . well, you have a right to feel cheated. The simple explanation is that Team Nuvision, led by Rudy L. Kusuma, built a team of professionals to help them be in 10 places at once, and therefore greatly enhance the quality of service they can deliver to the clients. This is basically how other professionals like your banker or lawyer operate. And on top of this, they used cutting edge technology to dramatically improve the speed, efficiency and innovative capabilities of every part of the service they deliver. They don't expect you to care about the fine-details of the inner-workings of our office. What you should care about is simply this. Because of the highly unique way they've structured their real estate office. Their client's
