By Terry Miller An intense heat-wave over the past week sent hundreds of firefighters into attack mode battling several wildfires in our immediate area - some of which were arson related. The first of several was the Cabin Fire which con-
sumed 1500 acres of brush. The Cabin Fire started at 1:07 p.m. PST on Aug. 14. As of Sunday, the fire was 1,470 acres and 60% contained. Ten firefighters were evacuated with minor injuries. About 639 personnel are on scene. The location of the fire was 3 miles north Rincon-Redbox Rd. off HWY
39.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) that was in effect and any private aircraft or drone that violated the TFR would face serious criminal charges. The fire broke out near the Rio Hondo River in Mon-

ing recent rains. Among the observations made by the arborist from his inspection were that the tree was 85 feet tall, it had a trunk diameter of about 42 inches and a canopy width of about 60 feet by 60 feet. He also observed that the tree fell in an easterly direction and that it did not have a root crown on its east side and west side. The tree did not have wide-spreading anchoring roots, but large girdling roots were visible within the uplifted root system. Root rot fungus was also not present. Lubeshkoff also reported that there was historic evidence of fire damage indicated from black charcoal and white ash in a cavity on the underneath

By staff writer Despite the massive drought, the City of Pasadena is contending with an independent, certified arborist to investigate the sudden collapse of an Italian stone pine tree in front of the Kidspace Museum in Brookside Park. Several factors most likely contributed to the tree’s failure on July 28, one of which was too much water. Arborist Ted Lubeshkoff of JTL Consultants wrote in a seven-page report that there were many possible contributing factors that may have caused the tree to fall, including absence of anchoring roots, a slight lean in the tree, recent drought conditions and heavy weight due to increased water uptake follow-

The arborist noted an increase in water consumption by the tree probably added substantial weight to it after about .61 inches of rain occurred on July 19 and July 20, less than 10 days prior to its collapse. “The Italian stone pine probably could not release water as quickly as it was taking water in, causing a substantial increase in weight throughout the tree,” the report noted. “A lean in the tree, by itself, is not necessarily an indicator of an unstable tree. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) officers captured and removed the 300th foreign fugitive apprehended by the agency since October 2014, which marked the start of fiscal year 2015. Of the 300 removals, 59 involved foreign fugitives originally arrested in California, including an accused mass murderer captured in Santa Cruz County wanted for killing seven members of a family in Oaxaca more than two decades ago. In Southern California, Los Angeles-based ERO officers located and captured a Mexico City sushi chef in June who is accused of slashing a female companion to death in the backseat of a taxi earlier this year using one of his sushi knives. “Arresting and removing these kinds of fugitives is the lifeblood of what our officers do every day,” said the Executive Associate Director of ICE ERO Tom Homan. “Protecting the American people by taking dangerous criminal aliens off our streets has been and will always be our first priority.” The 300th capture was Elmer Francisco Reyes, a 30-year-old Honduran man wanted for aggravated sexual assault by Honduran law enforcement authorities. On July 17, ERO officers in Miami, along with the Miami Beach Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task
Force, tracked Reyes to a Miami Beach residence and took him into custody. Reyes was removed to Honduras July 31. The majority of the 300 arrests occurred in California, Florida and Texas. Most of the arrestees are violent criminals who had been convicted of, or are wanted for violent crimes - including murder (101); sexual offenses (15); assault (13); kidnapping (10); and robbery (13). Since Oct. 1, 2009, ERO has removed more than 1,150 foreign fugitives from the U.S. who were sought in their native countries for serious crimes. ERO works with HSI’s Office of International Operations, foreign consular offices in the United States, and Interpol to identify foreign fugitives illegally present in the United States. The ICE National Criminal Analysis and Targeting Center (NCATC) provides critical investigative support for daily arrest efforts, including criminal and intelligence analysis from a variety of sources. The NCATC provides comprehensive analytical support to aid the at-large enforcement efforts of all ICE components. Members of the public who have information about foreign fugitives are urged to contact ICE by calling the toll-free ICE tip line at 1-866347-2423 or internationally at 001-1802-872-6199. They can also file a tip online by completing ICE’s online tip form.
Sudden Rains Flooded Pine Tree, Contributing to Break Continued from page 1

sive plumes of smoke high into the air over the Lake Castaic area. Firefighters made water drops as the blaze charred hundreds of acres from Sunday afternoon into Monday morning, US Forest Service Battalion Chief John Flores said. The blaze was 10 percent contained as of Monday morning. Flores said heat was a concern for firefighters dousing the flames. At least seven firefighters were injured battling the blazes, suffering from dehydration, heat exhaustion, smoke inhalation and one bee sting. The causes of the fires remain under investigation but as reported earlier, One person has been arrested. High temperatures and fires are a dangerous combination, but relatively calm winds helped, according to fire officials. On Saturday, August 15, 2015 around 7:30 a.m., Arcadia Police responded to the call of a suspicious person on the property of the U.S. Forestry Headquarters. Officers contacted a subject who had matches in his pocket and had gathered kindling, twigs, and sticks and stacked them underneath a large tree to start a fire. Officers arrested the subject for attempted arson and identified him as 59year old Ronald Watson of Sierra Madre, who was also on parole for arson. Watson was booked at the Arcadia Police Department jail and is currently being held in custody at L.A. County jail without bail.

A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This issue is now squarely before the California Supreme Court in Yvanova v. New Century Mortgage Corp. This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners. It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation. Contact us so we can help you.

Several Burbank residents gathered at Tuesday’s city council meeting and requested financial support for Damien Lopez, an amateur boxer close to qualifying for the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil. Lopez, 20, is a Burbank athlete who needs funding to make it to the final two rounds in the Olympic trial qualifiers for the 2016 U.S. Olympics Men’s Boxing team. The Burbank High School alum and former football player started boxing at the age of ten and has trained and fought in over 30 amateur fights. Last year in September 2014, he won the belt for the Police Athletic/Activities League (PAL) National Boxing tournament in Oxnard, CA. This year, he has progressed throughout the first two rounds of the Olympic trial qualifiers in Spokane, WA and Colorado Springs, CO. At the 2015 USA National Boxing Championship in Washington, Lopez fought his way to the first round of the quarterfinals while sick with food poisoning. He placed in the top 8 out of 42 boxers in the 152-lb weight class. Although Lopez was very weak during his last fight, he was still able to knock out his opponent in the first round. In Colorado, he also made it to the quarterfinals, placing in the top 8 out of 36 boxers. Lopez and Burbank community members, including Steven Harpst, the founder of the Burbank Boxing Club and Juan Guillien, former candidate for the 2015 city council election, came before the council in order to attest to Lopez’s level of skill as a boxer, while

also asking for support. “He trains hard every day. He treats it like a job. In the last few years, I have seen Damien blossom, and I’m always amazed at his drive and ambition. This young man is very capable of going the distance,” said Maya Roseman, a resident and a co-trainer of the Burbank Boxing Club. Lopez also went before he council asking for financial assistance. Displaying a cut above his eyebrow from a recent match and carrying the belt he won at last year’s PAL Boxing National Tournament, he noted his belief in his ability to qualify for the Olympic boxing team. “I want to go to the Olympics. I think I have the skill and the heart to do what other people are trying to do their best for,” he said. “I believe that I can get there. I can make the team and represent America.” Lopez also pointed out that he has seen other California cities, like Pasadena, support their fighters at the trial qualifiers. The city council responded to Lopez’s request,
noting their interest in helping him obtain the funding for his upcoming tournaments. Although the city has only directly donated to athletic organizations and not specific athletes in the past, the council members offered to help Lopez notify the community and city organizations about his need. Mayor Bob Frutos confirmed that he will personally meet with Lopez on Sept. 2 to brainstorm possible ways he can fund his future trips. Community members who would like to support Lopez can mail checks and money orders, made out to the Burbank Boxing Club, to 145 S. Glenoaks Blvd., #103, Burbank, CA 91502. Proceeds will go towards registration fees, transportation, room and board and food. Lopez hopes to raise about $5,000 to fund his trips to the Olympic trial qualifiers in Philadelphia in September and in Memphis in October. For more information, email teamdlopezbbc@ gmail.com.

Governor Signs Assemblymember Forget Gidget Goes Hawaiian... Holden’s ‘Buy Here, Pay Here’ Legislation Gidget Goes Psycho! Psycho Beach Party at the Long Beach Playhouse September 5 - October 3, 2015 Long Beach, CA, In Psycho Beach Party, playwright Charles Busch tosses together a quirky mélange of Gidget, Joan Crawford, beach parties, surfers, Hitchcock and slasher movies. The result is hilarious, campy and a lot of fun to watch. The show has delighted audiences since 1987. It has played offBroadway, at international festivals and in community theaters. The Playhouse production is directed by Dale Jones, a veteran of several Playhouse productions. Jones showed his parody chops with 2014’s popular The 39 Steps, which was a hilariously twisted take on Hitchcock films. In Psycho Beach Party he brings that same knowledge of film genres and artful parody to the piece. “This show is fun and it’s twisted, it’s perfect for Dale. And it’s perfect for the Studio Theatre audience,” said Andrew Vonderschmitt, Executive and Producing Artistic Director. Psycho Beach Party is also a great show for Donna Fritsche, manager of the cos-
tume shop, to show off her considerable talent in capturing a vintage vibe with her designs. The bathing suits look like something straight out of Surfer Magazine circa 1962. At times you’ll swear Annette and Frankie have returned for one more day. The eleven-member cast is a combination of debut performances and actors returning to the Playhouse stage. Several of the cast members are drama students from schools including Renaissance High School in Long Beach, Orange County School of Performing Arts, Cypress College, LBCC and CSULB. “I’m thrilled when students audition and get cast. Everyone at the Playhouse was once that student. It’s great to be part of their early theater experience,” said Vonderschmitt. “Come and see the show, it’s the perfect way to end the summer.” SPECIAL EVENTS FOR THIS PLAY: • Pay what you can Thursday September 3 • Two for One Preview Friday September 4 -
Tickets are $12.00 • Opening Night Champagne Reception with cast on September 5 - Tickets are $27.00 Adults are $24.00, seniors $21.00, and Students $14.00. Significant reforms in the Buy Here, Pay Here car loan industry are set to go into effect next January, after Governor Brown’s signature of Assemblymember Chris Holden’s bill to protect the used-car-buying public. “By signing AB 265 the Governor recognized the State of California needed to do more to reign in abusive consumer lending practices at Buy Here, Pay Here car dealerships,” said Assemblymember Holden. “Given all of the challenges and worries
facing hard working families in our state, I am proud that AB 265 will provide car-buying consumers the flexibility they need to make their payments on time, keep their cars and continue to provide for their family.” Under AB 265, Buy Here, Pay Here dealerships must provide a 5 to 10-day notification period before a remote kill device can be used to disable a car for lack of payment. Current law requires only a 48 hour warning before a car can be disabled due to
late payments, or insurance cancellation or even a clerical error. The bill also increases penalties for violations of these laws. Many of these used car dealers target low-income workers with poor credit. They are the lenders of last resort for many working class Californians, but the cost for this kind of credit is steep with exorbitant interest rates and can be a vicious cycle for poor workers who need a car. AB 265 goes into effect January 1, 2016.

Descanso Gardens’ newest collection is positively primeval! On Saturday, Sept. 26, the Ancient Forest opens, featuring plants virtually unchanged since dinosaurs roamed the Earth. The daylong celebration includes guided walks of the ancient plant collection, a fossil table from the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, and fossilthemed children’s activities. The Ancient Forest is located near the Lilac Garden at Descanso, in a section known to staff at the “Jurassic” garden because of its collection of plant species that evolved millions of years ago. This location provides the setting for Descanso’s new cycad collection. Donated by collectors Katia and Frederick Elsea, this cycad collection includes almost 175 plants representing 66 species including several endangered species. Plants existed for millions of years before flowers appeared on the scene. Todaycycads provide a glimpse of the earliest types of flora on Earth. Cycads appear in fossils from more than 280 million years ago, and they were a major part of the ecosystem during the Jurassic period, the age of the dinosaurs. Today wild populations of these beautiful, palm-like plants are shrinking, in part because they grow so slowly - some living for hundreds of years -- and because collectors have harvested them from their natural settings. Walking through this new garden under the shade of the redwood trees, visitors will come upon other early plant lineages including tree ferns, gingkoes and conifers, including auracaria and podocarpus, as well as magnolia,
the earliest existing flowering plant. Activities at the Ancient Forest opening are free with Gardens admission and include: Ancient Plant Walk, 10:30 a.m. & 1 p.m.: Take a guided tour of the new Ancient Plants Garden and learn more about these fascinating plants. Fossil Table, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: An educator from the Natural History Museum will oversee this display of fossils. Learn more about the world of the dinosaurs and maybe even touch a fossil from the Jurassic era! Make a Fossil, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Make a plant fossil in this hands-on activity for all ages. Admission to Descanso Gardens is $9 for adults;
$6 for seniors and students with a school I.D.; $4 for children five to 12, and free for age four and younger. Join Descanso Gardens and enjoy free admission and early entry year-round. Descanso Gardens is open daily (closed Christmas) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended summer hours from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, June 18 to Aug. 20. Founded as a public garden in 1953, Descanso Gardens is located at 1418 Descanso Drive, La Cañada Flintridge, CA 91011. For information, call (818) 9494200 or visit descansogardens.org. Descanso Gardens is a member-supported garden accredited by the American Association of Museums.
