hoosing the right high school is an important decision in a child’s life, especially if that child needs the right environment to be successful. Some students struggle in larger classes and may get lost or get easily distracted. The faculty and staff at Arroyo Pacific Academy strive to provide a supportive and nurturing learning environment for their students, including those who may need accommodations. Some of the key features that attract students and families to the school are the

small class sizes, which averages 10 to 12 students per class, free after school tutoring available to their students, a study hall period integrated into the daily schedule, and a quarter system that helps students better manage their course load. Arroyo Pacific Academy was founded in 1998, but recently opened their new campus at 325 N. Santa Anita Ave., Arcadia, CA 91006 this past spring. The school will be hosting the Open House for the new campus on Saturday, Nov. 17 between 1-3 p.m.

rcadia Christian School (ACS) was originally founded in 1945 by a group of parents to provide a Christian education for their children. Their vision sought to combine academic excellence with a Biblical worldview as its foundation. The core values that define ACS are: faith, character, heart and service. At ACS, students will discover their individual gifts while developing spiritually, socially and intellectually. It is their goal to train, equip and prepare young people to make a difference in their community. Today, Arcadia Christian School continues this rich legacy for students in preschool (beginning at age 2 ½) through eighth grade. Located in the heart of the San Gabriel Valley, in the City of Arcadia, at 1900 S. Santa Anita Ave., ACS also offers

n order to equip all students at Maranatha with the knowledge, competencies, and orientations needed for success, and to maximize learning, Maranatha has developed the following schoolwide expected student outcomes. Students who graduate from Maranatha will be: Transformative Disciples - Biblically literate students, who are growing followers of Christ, living out and modeling their faith in community to affect the world for Christ. Rigorous Scholars - Critical thinkers who have mastered an aptitude for study, are trained through a Christian worldview, and have a love of learning. Skilled Communicators - Students who express themselves through the mindful use of technology, meaningful writing,

masterful oration, and creative illustration. Global Stewards - Students who are service driven, missions minded, environmentally responsible, culturally respectful, and globally aware. Maranatha High School is located at 169 S. Saint

John Ave. in Pasadena. The school can be reached by calling (626) 817-4000 or by visiting maranathahighschool.org. Science students watch closely as their teacher demonstrates. - Courtesy photo / Maranatha

n an article which published last April in Time magazine, Katie Reilly reported that record numbers of college students are seeking treatment for anxiety and depression. She further described that when UCLA offered, for the first time, all incoming students a free online screening for depression, more than 2,700 students opted in. However, anxiety and depression often predate college. High school students, most especially in the San Gabriel Valley, are faced with daunting competition when they start applying to colleges. They are over-scheduled, sleep-deprived, and hell-bent to stand out among other over-achievers. It’s no wonder, then, that they are riddled with anxiety that often leads to depression. Building the groundwork for sending happy and healthy kids to college is a mandate that John Finch, headmaster of Chandler School, takes to heart. “We establish an environment where there are high expectations, but low stress,”

c e g e l l o c Workshop Saturday, November 3, 2018 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Creveling Lounge For registration or more information, visit www.pasadena.edu/cashforcollege or call (626) 585-7401.

Finch declares. “We pay careful attention to the volume of work we ask the students to do. We don’t try to fit round pegs into square holes – we provide a program that meets their needs and adjust our program so that each child feels recognized, respected, and challenged. “As we challenge our students, requiring them to do good work, we are equally careful about how we manage expectations. We have to be mindful that doing otherwise leads us to the same path we’ve been going on, with more kids falling out in the end.” “Socially, we want to create an environment where children are kind to each other, respect and help each other,” states Finch. “At the same time, we want to establish an atmosphere where kids can be resilient and gritty. We want for them to pursue their interests by trial and error. And if they fail, we’ll help them try again. We want them to feel that there’s a balanced foundation of care and love.” Finch points out, “I think students who spend too much time on screens and not enough time interacting with others can become isolated and lonely. We have to be

cautious, conscientious, and deliberate in urging our kids to shut their screens down, to spend more time interacting and socializing with friends and family.” “Increasingly, I hear principals say their biggest concern is not so much the achievement, but the well-being of their students. Something’s changing and we have to find the cause and respond accordingly. Ten years ago schools were adding technology and computer positions. Now schools are augmenting learning and emotional support. “In a small private school with an adult-student ratio of 1 to 7, it’s very hard for the child to slip through the cracks,” assures Finch. “We’re capable of arresting something before it becomes too dark.” It’s heartening to know that parents, teachers, and school administrators, are acknowledging that there is a mental health problem affecting a large number of students. That schools are also now taking active measures to help students get through their anxiety and depression is certainly a lifeline for those who’ve been feeling alone and despondent. There is hope yet.
