Anti-Bullying 101:

14 Strategies to Squelch Bullying Tendencies in Your Children

Have “the talk” about bullying. The truth is, nobody ever thinks their kid is a bully. It’s always someone else’s child who is calling other kids hurtful names, pushing them around on the playground, and sending nasty texts. But according to Patkin, even if you don’t believe your children have even thought about crossing the line, talking to them aboutbullying is crucial. Have a specific discussion with them about what bullying behaviors look like, and make sure your kids know that these behaviors will not be tolerated in your family. (Think of it as having “the talk” about not using drugs,

for example.) Make sure your kids know that bullying is hurtful. Especially when they’re younger, kids might not have the emotional maturity to make the

others (even if that wasn’t the bully’s intent) and on the perpetrators themselves. Share statistics with your children. If you feel it’s age appropriate, take a few minutes to

“One of the best ways to prevent bullying is to raise kids who don’t participate in or tolerate the behavior. According to Todd Patkin, here are 14 things that parents can do in order to not raise bullies.” connection between their words or actions and how they make another child feel. Explain to your children that bullying can have devastating effects on

research bullying statistics with your child. A quick internet search will reveal a large number of disturbing facts. For instance, according to www.

bullyingstatistics.org, • Almost 30 percent of young people participate in bullying behaviors or are bullyingvictims. • Every day, around 160,000 students do not attend school because they are afraid of beingbullied. • Young people who have been bullied are two to nine times likelier than their nonbullied peers to consider suicide. Seeing these statistics can prove to your child that bullying isn’t just something that Mom and Dad are needlessly worried about—it’s something that is happening at their schools and to their peers. College-going Culture of Marshall By Mark Anderson ohn Marshall Fundamental Secondary School is a diverse educational community that graduates students who are empowered to think critically, to act responsibly, and to take on challenges through a system distinguished by instruction that is both rigorous and engaging and a culture that invites and embraces students and their families. A school in the Pasadena Unified School District, Marshall services students grades 6-12 and is noted for its focus on rigor, success, and achievement for all students. Marshall has been recognized nationally by US News & World Report, Newsweek, The Washington Post, Parade Magazine, Los Angeles Magazine, and named an Inspiration School by the College Board and a Breakthough School by Met Life/National Association of Secondary School Principals. Graduating classes of approximately 225 students regularly are awarded between $2.5 to $3 million in college scholarships annually. This success is based in purposeful focus on removing barriers to the Advanced Placement (AP) classes, advocacy for diversity through our actions, and development of a pre-AP program beginning in sixth grade has resulted is drastic growth in students taking and succeeding in AP

J

courses. Approximately two-thirds of all graduating seniors have taken at least 1 AP exam, and almost 95% are enrolled in a 2- or 4-year college. Marshall has developed a comprehensive middle school pre-AP program; building college success beginning in the 6th grade. Open doors to AP courses with preparation beginning in middle school is now the identity of the school – Marshall provides Equity and Access to all students to rigorous courses and begins preparing students in the 6th grade to remove barriers, real and perceived. The growth of the AP program has also led to a partnership with the local community college. All seniors either take AP English Literature or the equivalent of English 100 at PCC. Our inclusive vision is bringing college level courses to all the students. Recognizing students’ desires to achieve, and providing them rigorous coursework aligned to AP standards in middle school through high school has become the Marshall way. First generation college students and underrepresented minority groups fill our hallways and AP classrooms. Being an AP student is not contained to grades 11 and 12; it is a culture grades 6-12 and beyond.

Anti-Bullying 101 from pg. 4 intercede. Teaching your kids not to participate in bullying behaviors is a good start, but it’s also important that they not allow their peers to be tormented. Encourage them to step in if they see another child being treated badly—if they are comfortable doing so. If not, make sure your child knows to talk to a teacher or other authority figure when another child is being tormented. Even an anonymous note on a desk can open an adult’s eyes to a bad situation. Be involved every day. It’s tempting to think that the best thing we can do for our children is to provide a good life for them, to include not only the basics of food, clothing, and

shelter, but also a good school, weekly piano lessons, and an everybodyplays sports team to participate in. No, those things aren’t at all bad, but they also can’t take the place of what’s truly the most important thing in a child’s development: his parents. Patkin is adamant that no activity, program, or hobby can replace time with your kids. Being involved in their lives on a daily, nitty-gritty basis will allow them to stand the best chance when it comes to making all the right choices (not just avoiding bullying). Don’t leave your children’s development in the hands of others or up to chance. Don’t be afraid to discipline. Patkin isn’t advocating “spare the rod; spoil next page

Find Your Balance at

flintridge prep Each year on the first day of school, instead of going to their classes, Flintridge Prep students pick up their books and join an all-school celebration. The day sets the tone for a year to come, a year that will emphasize balance. Although Prep is ranked among the top independent schools in the region and nationally, Headmaster Peter Bachmann says, “The school comes to its student successes by encouraging an intellectual experience where students question and analyze concepts rather than focusing on test scores. The relationships they have with their teachers and their peer mentors make all the difference in their school experience. The result is that they are prepared well beyond college for an engaged, balanced and responsible life.” A student-faculty ratio of 8-1 makes this balance possible. The school has 65 degreed faculty, 6

75 percent of whom hold master’s degrees or higher. With adult mentoring, Prep students are encouraged to take intellectual risks and try new activities. Students also support each other through a web of mentoring and human development programs, both in the classroom and in extra-curricular activities such as community impact projects, athletic leadership, in plays and in the school musical. The result is a middle school experience that is fully integrated with the high school. Students in all grades found clubs based on interests. Whether it’s sewing, student government, writing or robotics, they are challenged intellectually in the classroom, and the curiosity extends well beyond the campus gates. Located in La Cañada Flintridge, Flintridge Preparatory is a coed independent school with 500 students in grades 7-12. The school seeks to nurture in its students the knowledge, critical skills, community values and creativity essential for an engaged, balanced and responsible life.

the child”—but he is saying that kids need to be aware of boundaries from a young age. They need to know that if they violate the rules, there will be consequences. Period. It’s important to squelchbullying behaviors the moment they appear instead of writing them off as a “stage” or “normal part of childhood.” For instance, if you see your daughter being nasty or overly bossy to her younger brother, tell her that she needs to play more nicely. Predetermine consequences that will be enacted if the behavior doesn’t change and make sure your daughter knows about them. Teach them to lead selflessly. It’s an understatement to say that our society encourages kids to be leaders. Everything around them practically screams, “Be number one! Climb as high on the ladder as possible! Do everything you can to be successful!” It’s important to teach kids to achieve those goals by earning the respect of others—not

by hurting others. Explain to them that yes, you can reach the top of the pecking order by putting others down and intimidating them—but these tactics will ultimately cause you to be unpopular, despised, and alone. Talk about how people who work with others to achieve common goals are ultimately happier and more successful. Talk about technology. Within the past generation, technology has made bullying much more prolific; after all, taunts no longer have to stop when the school bell rings. Plus, the relative anonymity of an online identity makes kids much bolder than they might be faceto-face. Have a frank discussion with your kids about what is and isn’t appropriate for email, texting, social media, etc. Make sure they understand what’s said online can be just as hurtful, and that it’s much more public and permanent than what’s said in the school hallways. Also, talk about the fact that even passing on a text that originated

with someone else makes you guilty of bullying. Encourage them to spend time with positive people. While no child wants to hear from her parents that she’s hanging out with the wrong crowd, you can encourage her to spend time with people who approach life with positive attitudes and healthy perspectives. Also, pay attention yourself to who your child is hanging out with. If you identify a bad influence, don’t be afraid to limit the time your child spends with him or her. Yes, as a parent you’re the biggest influence on your child’s development, but don’t forget that her friends will also have a huge impact on her behaviors and beliefs. Take every opportunity to build their confidence. Many bullies pick on others because they themselves have low self-esteem, and putting down others makes them feel more powerful. By helping your child be confident, happy, and fulfilled, you reduce the chances that he will be a bully.

Not Just for Rocket Scientists

Looking to get rich? Try welding. For the third consecutive year, positions in the skilled trades are the hardest to fill, according to a Manpower Group survey of American employers. This shortage is why a master welder can earn a six-figure salary -- without a college degree. There aren’t enough skilled tradesmen because our nation’s schools aren’t producing graduates with the math and science knowledge needed to fill these skilled jobs. That has to change. Educators must rethink the way they teach math and science -- especially to students who may not go to college. The best way to reach these kids is to scrap the age-old lecture and empower them to learn by doing. International rankings reveal the depths of America’s underachievement. Among 34 developed nations, the United States ranks 27th in math and 20th in science. More than one-quarter of U.S. students lack even basic proficiency in math. That’s 13 percent higher than the global average. This poor performance is concerning, as these students risk

economic marginalization. A million people drop out of high school each year. Most don’t participate in the labor force. Those that do face an unemployment rate 50 percent higher than their graduating peers. That low-performing quarter of students also includes many who complete high school yet still lack the math skills needed for most entry-level manufacturing jobs -- let alone the skilledtrade positions that could vault them into the middle class. Philadelphia Federal Reserve President Charles Plosser said earlier this year, “We are seeing a mismatch of skills in the workforce and the jobs that are being created.” To fill these jobs -- and provide livelihoods for millions -- we must keep students who struggle with math in school and find ways to boost their achievement. According to the National Training Laboratories, the traditional lecture format yields only a 5 percent learning retention rate. Allowing students to practice by doing, in contrast, results in a whopping 75 percent retention rate. The way forward is clear: Embrace technology, collaboration, and hands-on learning. Already, colleges are adopting this approach. The University

students perform at various events throughout the year. Older students may also join beginning band in preparation for the Rio Hondo Prep marching band and symphonic band. In addition, Pearl offers a unique “Honors Electives” program giving students the opportunity to participate in classes such as woodworking, drawing, handbells, chess, singing, and drama. Pearl offers a complete before and after school program where students receive help with their homework and then can participate in scheduled activities such as games, crafts and cookings. Just as a pearl is created from a simple grain of sand in the right environment, Pearl works cooperatively with the home to create a stimulating and wholesome atmosphere that fosters personal as well as academic development in children. Pearl places a strong emphasis on character development throughout all aspects of the child’s life including respect, self-discipline and basic moral and ethical values. of Pennsylvania has built a new classroom with customized, powered round tables so students can collaborate using all manner of technology. It plans to add three to four more such classrooms over the next year. MIT’s Technology-Enabled Active Learning (TEAL) Project merges lecture, simulation, collaborative learning, and handson experiments in one classroom. Failure rates for freshmen in a TEAL physics course were one-third those in the traditional setting. Average gains in understanding were more than double. Gains were highest among students at the bottom of the achievement ladder. Engaged learning models are trickling down into elementary and secondary schools, too. In Philadelphia, several schools are using the Full Option Science System, a hands-on, activitybased approach that empowers students to investigate, experiment, and collaborate to discover the material in each lesson. Students at FOSS schools have scored higher on standardized tests. The longer they’re in the program, the greater the gains in achievement. Administrators across the country are enlisting the firm I lead, KI, to help them transform their traditional classrooms into technology-enhanced learning environments, where students work in small groups while instructors rove about, offering individualized help and coaching. To refill the ranks of the middle class with good-paying manufacturing jobs, we must address our nation’s math and science achievement gap. The instructional status quo isn’t working. There’s ample evidence that a more active, engaged approach will.

Science and Art Education making a difference at Foothill Oaks Academy here is no question that science and art play a foundational role in the education of young students. With this in mind, Foothill Oaks Academy in Duarte, CA, has determined to focus their energies on these valuable educational building blocks and has witnessed amazing results. Hands-on science exploration thoroughly engages students in the important domain of science education and creates excitement for learning. Attracting students to future careers in science and engineering begins in the early years by encouraging close observation, looking for evidence, asking questions and giving opportunity to discover. At Foothill Oaks the resident paleontologist visits every class bi-weekly to show artifacts or pictures, and to relate captivating stories from his vast knowledge and personal experience. On the alternate week, classes visit a newly renovated science lab where a science specialist provides hands-on science experiments reinforcing subject matter being taught by classroom teachers. Parents rave about this emphasis on the sciences, and students gain a firm foundation for scientific

thought and practice. Arts education teaches appreciation of visual aesthetics, enhances academic test performance, and gives opportunity to invent and create. At Foothill Oaks, art history is combined with projects relevant to the medium and techniques being studied. A variety of creative methods are chosen to build self-confidence and give all students a chance to excel. As a result, of the 60 student art pieces entered at this year’s LA County Fair, all earned either a first or third place ribbon. One 7th grade entry earned the Teen Sweepstakes Award for her Monet-style landscape. Common Core State Standards The Common Core is a set of high-quality academic standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy (ELA). These learning goals outline what a student should know and be able to do at the end of each grade. The standards were created to ensure that all students graduate from high school with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college, career, and life, regardless of where they live. Forty-three states, the District of Columbia, four territories, and the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) have voluntarily adopted and are moving forward with the Common Core. For years, the academic progress of our nation’s

students has been stagnant, and we have lost ground to our international peers. Particularly in subjects such as math, college remediation rates have been high. One root cause has been an uneven patchwork of academic standards that vary from state to state and do not agree on what students should know and be able to do at each grade level. Recognizing the value and need for consistent learning goals across states, in 2009 the state school chiefs and governors that comprise CCSSO and the NGA Center coordinated a state-led effort to develop the Common Core State Standards. Designed through collaboration among teachers, school chiefs, administra-

PASADENA UNIFIED RECEIVES TWO GRANTS FROM THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TO TRANSFORM SCHOOL CLIMATE The Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) has received a 2014 School Climate Transformation Grant and a Project AWARE Grant from the U.S. Department of Education worth $2.1 million over the next five years. According to the U.S. Department of Education, the School Climate Transformation grants to school districts provide more than $35.8 million to 71 school districts in 23 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The funds will be used to develop, enhance, or expand systems of support for implementing evidence-based, multi-tiered behavioral frameworks for improving behavioral outcomes and learning conditions for students. The goals of the program are to connect children, youths, and families to appropriate services and supports; improve conditions for learning and behavioral outcomes for school-aged youths; and increase awareness of and the ability to respond to mental-health issues among school-aged youths. “If we can’t help protect kids and staff, and make them feel safe at school, then everything else that we do is secondary,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. “If kids don’t feel safe, they can’t learn. It’s that simple. Through these grants of more than $70 million, we are continuing our commitment to ensure that kids have access to the best learning experience possible.” One hundred school districts received the Department of Health and Human Services’ Project AWARE grants, including 29 of the

California Ranked #1 in After School Programs State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson has announced that California leads the nation in after school programs, placing first among all states in a national survey released Thursday by the Afterschool Alliance. “The good news is, because we have followed through on our long-term commitment to invest in our children, California has the largest network of after school programs in the country,” Torlakson said. “These programs are helping our children learn and stay safe after school, while helping working parents keep their jobs. The challenge is that many more children still need to be served.” Torlakson celebrated California’s number one ranking with students, parents, community leaders, and advocates Thursday in a visit to the after school program at Roy Romer Middle School in North Hollywood. The Alliance gave California its top ranking in the 2014 edition of its “America After 3PM” survey, singling the state out for both strong participation among students and high satisfaction with after school programs among parents. It found that expanded learning participation in California had increased to 25 percent, compared to 19 percent in 2009, with more than 1.6 million students enrolled. The survey also found that 92 percent of California parents were satisfied with the quality of care of their child’s after school program, up from 83 percent in 2009. “Superintendent Torlakson has spearheaded efforts to

make California number one in the nation,” said Afterschool Alliance Executive Director Jodi Grant. “He created a statewide after school initiative within the California Department of Education that has increased quality and access to after school programs across this state. California stands head and shoulders above the rest of the country, not only for the percentage of students it serves, but for its emphasis on making high-quality after school programs a state priority. From extraordinary STEM programs, to service learning, to its trailblazing literacy programming, California has done an amazing job with afterschool programs.” The Alliance’s report also noted California’s work to emphasize the quality of programs, including Torlakson’s move to create an After School Division within the California Department of Education (CDE) and to develop a strategic plan to build on the state’s investments in expanded learning. The CDE also recently completed development of new Quality Standards for Expanded Learning programs. A teacher and long-time track and cross-country coach, Torlakson has long been a champion of after school programs. Legislation he authored led to the creation and expansion of these programs. California’s expanded learning programs today reach about 4,500 schools around the state. They are, in large part, funded through voter-approved Proposition 49, which guarantees $550 million annually for the state’s After School Education and Safety Program. California administers another $120 million in federal after school program funds. For more information about expanded learning, visit the CDE After School Division’s California Expanded Learning Programs Facebook Web page.

This year, Maranatha celebrates 50 years of Christ-centered, college preparatory education. What started as a small school has grown to one of the area’s leading private school options. The school’s founders saw a need for a Christian high school in the San Gabriel Valley area and had a vision for a school that would provide “Christian Education for Leadership” with high moral, spiritual, and scholastic standards. For many years, Maranatha was located in Sierra Madre, but ten years ago, Maranatha acquired part of the former Ambassador College campus near Old Town Pasadena as their permanent campus home. Maranatha continues to fill a unique role as the only non-denominational Christian high school in the San Gabriel Valley and attracts many families who not only seek an exemplary college preparatory education, but one that intentionally incorporates a Christian worldview. During the highly formational high school years, Maranatha is convinced of the dramatic influence a Christ-centered education can have. To this end, faith is integrated in every aspect of living, learning, and serving, leading to authentic student transformation. Students are encouraged and poured into by faculty through natural mentoring relationships that develop from staff that desire to see students’ lives changed. Maranatha engages the whole student, maximizing their God-given potential, knowing they are developing the change agents of this new generation. With over 100 courses offered in nine different departments, Maranatha’s students are challenged daily to develop their intellect through academics and to make a positive impact for Jesus Christ in our community.
