During the month of April, motorists caught violating California’s distracted driving law received a clear message from law enforcement during the high-visibility enforcement campaign. “Using a hand-held phone for calls, texting or apps while driving is something we all know is dangerous and wrong, but too many drivers are doing it anyway. So when we see it, we show zero tolerance,” said Lieutenant Rob Wilken from the Monrovia Police Department. The Monrovia Police Department issued 96 citations to violators of California’s distracted driving law during the recent enforcement period. The law provides that it is illegal to hold and use a cell phone while texting, calling or using apps while driving. It must be affixed to the vehicle and may be operated in hands-free mode using voice activation or used with the motion of a single swipe or tap of the driver’s finger. “Distracted driving kills too many people for us to ignore the facts and pretend it’s okay—it is never accept-

This past week, the City Clerk’s Office coordinated to complete the process of counting the remaining provisional and vote by mail ballots remaining from the April 11, General Municipal Election in Monrovia. The recent election so far saw 2,850 ballots cast (mail-in ballots

outnumbered in-pricinct voting by more than double) and a dismal turnout of 13.4 percent of registered voters. The updated semi-official results from the election are as follows: • For Mayor Tom Adams – 2,301 votes

Mark Harris – 434 votes • For City Council Larry Spicer – 2,052 votes Alexander Blackburn–1,757 votes Clifford DeCosta – 866 votes • For City Clerk Alice Atkins – 2,578 votes

City Attorney Craig Steele laid out the options open to the Monrovia City Council in regards to regulating the personal use of marijuana pursuit to the Adult Use of Mari-

juana Act (AUMA). The personal use of marijuana and the cultivation for personal use was legalized for adults starting the day after the election by the passage of Proposition 64. The sale and taxation of it will not come into effect until January 1 of 2018. Steele told the Monrovia City SEE PAGE 12
