New pedestrian safety video with Glendale Mayor Sinanyan The City of Glendale continues to have an unacceptable number of automobile / pedestrian traffic collisions. The demographic of the individuals in these fatal collisions has consistently remained Glendale’s older pedestrian population. Speeding, distracted driving, and jaywalking pedestrians are significant problems that endanger the drivers and pedestrians of our city. At the clear direction of the Glendale City Council, traffic safety is has been and will remain a high priority for the Police Department. Enforcement alone, however, will not curb reckless driving and jaywalking pedestrians. “In order to Please see page 3

production on the short film Times Like These. A powerful story based on her family’s real life experience, Times Like These tackles the important, and often ignored, topic of domestic abuse and one woman’s struggle to free herself and her child from her husband’s threatening hands. Century Youth Activities League’s Field of Dreams Sports complex opens to offer kids outdoor activities The Century Station Youth Activity League (YAL) Program is one of the busiest centers out of 17 Youth Activities Leagues in Los Angeles County. There are approximately 280 kids each day that participate in the YAL and the summer programs reach approximately 550 children daily through the main center and its nearby boxing center. With many energetic youths that the center attracts it is very difficult to engage the kids without on-site sport facilities. Staff members have had to shuttle the children half a mile to the nearest park for flag football games and soccer matches. This has changed thanks to the generous support of the LA84 Foundation. On January 22, 2014, LA84 invested in the Sheriff’s Youth Facility with a major grant of $126,800 to construct a brand-new sports complex at the expanding Century YAL. The LA84 Foundation funds youth athletics in Southern California, trains coaches and examines the role of sports in society. The foundation is the legacy of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. LA84 has previously contributed $341,000 to fund sports facilities and equipment at the South Los Angeles, Norwalk and

Compton YAL centers. Construction for the new sports complex project began in March 2014 and it converted a large parking lot behind the building into two regulation-size basketball courts and a half-size soccer/ futsal field. The complex was completed in May and now children are able to play organized games with their mentors in a safe and supervised environment. “We are so excited to have this beautiful new addition,” says the Century YAL’s director, Sergeant Veronica De La Rosa. “Offering more sports opportunities will help us continue to grow the center and encourages kids to participate in fun, healthy outdoor activities.” The Sheriff’s Youth Foundation and its team at the YALs would like to thank LA84 Foundation’s President Anita DeFrantz and her Board of Directors for their continued investment in the growth of our programs and in service to our youth. We would also like to give the utmost gratitude to both Patrick Escobar and Gabriela Tovar, their Grants and Programs management team for their great assistance in making these dreams come true! About the Youth Activities League There are 17 Youth Ac-

tivities Leagues throughout Los Angeles County — and every one represents a safe haven. For some kids, the local Youth Activities League is a place to get some muchneeded help with homework. For others, it’s a place to shoot some hoops or learn a new sport without fear of physical violence or becoming tangled up in many of the other negative distractions the streets have to offer. For others, it’s literally a place to call home. The YAL centers operate during the most crucial hours of the day, from 3 to 7 p.m., a time when many parents are not yet home from work and there’s much trouble to be found on the streets. The YAL is a place that provides fun and healthy things to do, it provides academic help, it provides guidance during times of need, and it provides direction, motivation and hope for a positive future in situations that may otherwise seem bleak. The YAL centers are available to youths ages 7 to 17, and there is no fee to participate. The facilities are staffed by a blend of deputies, civilian staff and untold dozens of volunteers who just want to help. Visit us at at http://www. Nixle.com

portrayed by Nancy Castro, who receives nothing but praise from both Lorena and her mother for her honest portrayal as Marisol (Maria). “It is most amazing being on set watching someone that is playing your real life story. Nancy did and wonderful job as Marisol and we remain close,” said Maria who was both shocked and supportive when Lorena first informed her of that she would be making the film. “The film is so real, it is like I am going through it again. It gives me chills. At same time, I thank God for the strength to move on with my life and that the film will encourage others in similar

situations. I am honored my story will live on for years and help others.” As for her daughter, Mabel could not be prouder. “I have always been close with my Lorena and my son Alex and this has only strengthened the bond the three of us share,” continued Maria who escaped from her abusive husband when her children were four and ten respectively. “I feel blessed that Lorena had the strength and courage to accomplish this.” Lorena agrees that the whole family is stronger for their shared experience in making Times Like These, noting that she could not have done it without her

brother who served as her right hand throughout the entire filmmaking process. Most intrigued by and passionate about telling stories that explore relationships, the human condition and the many complicated facets of life, Lorena has honed her craft learning from her mentors including Martin Scorsese, who personally encouraged her to make Times Like These. Her production work credits also include the recent blockbuster The Wolf on Wall Street and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty among others. Your child may be in danger, find out how you could help By Angela Lara Lomeli Technological advances and the internet have created countless ways for people to communicate and exchange information in a matter of seconds, at any time of the day. However, this communication is not always positive. Research shows that 1 in 4 kids in the United States are bullied and cyberbullied on a regular basis (Bullyingstatistics.org). According to the Cyberbullying Research Center, an estimated of about 160,000 students stay home and not go to school because they are afraid of being bullied. Bullying is defined as “unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.” Cyberbullying is defined as “bullying that takes place using electronic technology. Electronic technology includes devices and equipment such as cell phones, computers, and tablets as well as communication tools including social media sites, text messages, chat, and websites.” Thus, it is evident that bullying in not only a problem that is affecting our family, school and community but that it is a national issue. Due to the popularity of social media sites like FaceBook, Twitter, Ask, Instagram and Tumblr, users are taking advantage of these outlets to communicate their bullying attacks with out a face-to-face contact. Some examples of how cyberbullying is done is by creating fake profiles and using them to harass victims or by creating group pages where individuals could anonymously criticize and ridicule vulnerable targets. Victims and perpetra-

tors are rapidly growing and disastrous consequences are intensifying; such by the compelling acts of suicides due to cyberbullying and bullying overall. It is important to realize that suicide is the third leading cause of death among teenagers between the ages of 10 and 24; which results in about 4,600 deaths per year and for every one suicide, there are at least 100 suicide attempts (Center for Disease Control and Prevention). It is crucial that students, parents, school, and the community as a whole be more active in becoming aware of what cyberbullying and bullying is. It is detrimental to our nation that you recognize the strong support you can provide these bills so that they can result in laws to help save lives. Be more informed today! Hillsides launches Facebook sweepstakes Hillsides, a Pasadenaheadquartered charity that serves children and families throughout Los Angeles County, has launched a Facebook sweepstakes contest, “A New Day.” The agency is asking people to submit a caption and/or photo illustrating what they are doing to move forward in life. For example, someone who has decided it’s a “new day” to get fit might post a photo of a pair of running shoes. Some-

one starting a novel might post a photo of a laptop. The randomly selected winner will be awarded a $250 Target gift card, sponsored by W.D. Bell Inc. The contest will run for two weeks until May 16 and is being held in conjunction with May being National Foster Care Awareness Month. In addition, the sweepstakes dovetails into the charity’s 2014 annual fund direct mail campaign,

also titled “A New Day,” which raises funds for Hillsides’ four core programs. The New Day Annual Fund campaign features stories of how Hillsides has offered children and families a “new day” filled with hope, promise, and a chance to heal from past trauma. To be eligible to win the sweepstakes, participants first must like Hillsides Facebook page, https://www.facebook. com/HillsidesChildren.

A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners. It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation. Contact us so we can help you.

“Wildfire Awareness Week” declared in California for May 4-10

Continued from page 1 would typically respond to fewer than 600 wildfires. During Wildfire Awareness Week, CAL FIRE is reminding Californians that when it comes to wildfires, remember “Ready, Set, Go!”. Being Ready for a wildfire starts by maintaining 100 feet of Defensible Space and hardening homes with fire resistant building materials. “With this year’s drought it is absolutely critical that residents be prepared for wildfires by

ensuring they have 100 feet of Defensible Space around their homes,” said Chief Pimlott. “Most wildfires are preventable and we need residents and vacationers to be extra cautious outdoors because one less spark means one less wildfire.” Homeowners looking for additional information on how to prepare themselves, their families and their homes for wildfire can visit www.ReadyForWildfire.org. The site offers

tips for residents to make their homes more resistant to wildfires and to ensure that their families are ready to evacuate early and safely when a wildfire strikes. Governor Brown has called on all Californians to reduce their water use by 20 percent and prevent water waste – visit SaveOurH2O.org to find out how everyone can do their part, and visit Drought.CA.Gov to learn more about how California is dealing with the effects of the drought.

Sriracha factory gets a boost from office of Texas Governor By SHEL SEGAL As the Irwindale City Council is getting ready this week to vote to declare the Sriracha factory a public nuisance, officials from the city of Azusa toured the grounds of the factory on May 1, according to a published report. The tour of the 650,000-square foot factory by city officials are believed by some to find a company to come to Irwindale if the hot chili sauce manufacturer makes good on its promise to relocate to Texas, according to a published report. Reportedly among the Azusa delegation to the factory on Azusa Canyon Road were City Councilman Robert Gonzales, City Manager James Makshanoff, Director of Utilities George Morrow and Key Accounts Manager Paul Reid, according to that report. Azusa city officials were not the lone public officials to come by the factory as San Fernando Valley Con-

gressman Tony Cardenas also visited, according to that report. The council drafted a resolution declaring Sriracha a public nuisance because many neighbors have complained that the chili smells “burned their eyes, induced coughing fits and forced them to stay indoors during the fall chili grinding season,” according to that report. That has prompted David Tran, the CEO of Sriracha’s parent company Huy Fong, to invite lawmakers by the Irwindale factory and let them know why he should move the company to their location, according to that report, with the delegation from Texas, a place that has indicated Sriracha would be at home, coming to visit on May 12, according to that report. In addition, Dallas State Rep. Jason Villalba announced Thursday a fellow state Rep. Hubert Vo, of Alief and West Houston,

will be joining the delegation, which will include the Texas agriculture commissioner, an official from the state’s attorney general’s office and the director of business development for Gov. Rick Perry’s Economic Development and Tourism Office. “I am deeply troubled that one of the fastest-growing and universally beloved condiments in the world – made right here in the USA – could face such blatant obstructionism by a local city government,” said Villalba in a press release. “This would never happen in Texas. I am proud my friend and colleague, Hubert Vo, will be joining us in California to meet with Mr. Tran in person and talk in greater detail how Texas can provide a more business-friendly environment in which to thrive.” (Shel Segal can be reached at ssegal@beaconmedianews.com. Pasadena Heritage presents remebering Busch Gardens and rediscovering Busch Gardens On Saturday, May 10th, Pasadena Heritage will host Michael Logan in a showing of “Remembering Busch Gardens”, in celebration of National Preservation Month Industrialist and co-founder of the Anheiser-Busch Corporation, Adolphus Busch, and his wife Lily, bought a winter home on Orange Grove Boulevard in 1904, and immediately began working with a prominent landscape architect to beautify their property, planting rare and exotic plants and trees, installing fanciful water features, and turning the bed of the Arroyo into a botanical wonderland. In 1905 they opened their garden to the public, and Busch Gardens became a major tourist attraction with over 1,000,000 visitors between 1905 and 1938 when the gardens closed for good. Memories of the once world famous and first Busch Gardens in Pasadena have nearly vanished since closing in 1938. However, most of the original features survived but many are hidden on private

property. In his presentation, researcher Michael Logan matches historic images to their same exact locations a century later. On the following Saturday, May 17th, docent-led walking tours will allow visitors a rare opportunity to walk the historic pathways and staircases in search of the many remnants of the past. Key garden sights will be highlighted, including the Old Mill, originally built as a playhouse for Mr. Busch’s daughter, and the Grecian Pergola, which was part of the original entrance to the gardens. This illustrated lecture will take place at 10:00 a.m. on May 10th, at the Women's City Club of Pasadena. On May 17th tours will depart in thirty-minute increments starting at 9:00 am, and the tour will last approximately two hours. When you purchase your ticket you may choose a time for the walking tour. Space is limited so be sure to order tickets early in order to get your preferred

time. Comfortable, flatheeled shoes are a must, as the tour will cover over one mile and will include some hills. Ticket prices are $12 for Pasadena Heritage members and $15 for the general public, Tour and Lecture are priced separately. School teacher, Jose Jesus Mosqueda, who is on compulsory leave. The girls were in third and fourth grade when the alleged acts occurred, according to that report. One of the attorneys for the girls, Anthony De Marco, called the alleged incidents “atrocious,” especially when other adults were on site and this allegedly occurred during school hours, according to that report. The acts in question span the time frame from November 2008 to April 2013, according to that report. In addition, the defendants in the cases include the district itself, former Superintendent Donna Perez and current Superintendent Laura Tellez-Gagliano, according to that report.

“In addition to complaints of personal injuries, the civil suits accuse Alhambra Unified of myriad transgressions: negligence, sexual battery, disability discrimination, age discrimination, failure to provide reasonable accommodation, age discrimination, failure to prevent discrimination, retaliation and wrongful termination,” according to that report. Mosqueda, 44 faces eight felony counts, including oral copulation or sexual penetration of a child under 10, lewd act upon a child and continuous sexual abuse, according to that report. The plaintiffs are alleging in two of the complaints that the district either “knew or should have known” that Mosqueda took special

time out of his day to molest these girls “in an empty classroom during recess, lunch and after school,” according to that report. Mosqueda also allegedly suggested to a parent he would tutor that child privately as she was behind in school, according to that report. The lawsuit also alleges Mosqueda “often asked young girls to go behind his desk and would fondle students in the presence of teacher’s aides,” in addition to threatening to kill a young student if she told her parents or authorities about what he was doing, according to that report.
