Rolling Petition Bus Calls On Schwarzenegger And State Legislators Arts Festival To Allocate Funds For Seniors At Skilled Nursing Facilities Set for this Weekend BY SUSAN MOTANDER The Monrovia Association of Fine Arts (MAFA) will hold its annual “Celebrate the Arts” festival this weekend in Library Park in Old Town Monrovia. The festival will last both Saturday and Sunday, October 9 and 10, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Part of the proceeds from the event to support art education in local schools. The association also supports the Foothill Unity Center, the Boys and Girls Club of the Foothills and the Santa Anita YMCA.

national mobile petition garnering attention while making its way across the country pulled into an Arcadia nursing home Wednesday morning to call on Governor Schwarzenegger and the state legislature to allocate federal FMAP Medicaid funds recently passed by Congress and signed into
law by the President to the state’s skilled nursing care. The Driving for Quality Care RV tour made its 58th stop in Arcadia on a swing through the state before ending the 4 month tour in Long Beach next week. The petition, launched in Washington, D.C. in June, visited Arcadia to add onto the thousands of sig-
natures of elderly and their caregivers from 39 other states. Seniors are asking for Emergency Medicaid funds on the way to CA to be allocated to skilled nursing care given the enormous Medicare cuts to nursing homes included in the health care reform bill. It is paramount that seniors who require 24/7 skilled nursing care receive a

We’ve all heard Murphy’s Law about how things that can go wrong, will. Well, the other day I received this list of Universal Laws that sound a bit like ol’ Murphy. 1. Law of Gravity Any tool, nut, bolt, screw, when dropped, will roll to the least accessible corner. 2. Law of Mechanical Repair - After your hands become coated with grease, your nose will begin to itch and you’ll have to pee. 3. Law of Probability - The probability of being watched is directly proportional to the stupidity of the act. 4. Law of Random Numbers - If you dial a wrong number, you never get a busy signal and someone always answers. 5. Law of the Allibi - If you tell the boss you were late for work because you
had a flat tire, the very next morning you will have a flat tire. 6. Variation Law - If you change lines (or traffic lanes), the one you were in will always move faster than the one you are in now. 7. Law of the Bath When the body is fully immersed in water, the telephone rings. 8. Law of Close Encounters - The probability of meeting someone you know increases dramatically when you are with someone you don’t want to be seen with. 9. Law of the Result When you try to prove to someone that a machne won’t work, it will. 10. Law of Biomechanics - The severity of the itch is inversely proportional to the reach. 11. Law of the Theatre or Sports Arena - At any event, the people whose seats are farthest from the aisle arrive last and they are the ones who will leave their seats several times to go for food, beer, or the toilet and who leave early before the end of the performance or the game is over while those in the aisle seats come early, never move once, have long gangly legs or big bellies and who stay to the bitter
end and beyond. The aisle people also are very surly folk. 12. The Starbucks Law - As soon as you sit down to a cup of hot coffee, your boss will ask you to do something which will last until the coffee is cold. 13. Murphy’s Law of Lockers - If there are only two people in a locker room, they will have adjacent lockers. 14. Law of Physical Surfaces - The chances of an open-faced jelly sandwich landing face down on a floor covering are directly correlated to the newness and cost of the flooring. 15. Oliver’s Law of Public Speaking - A closed mouth gathers no feet. 18. Wilson’s Law of Commercial Marketing Strategy - As soon as you find a product that you really like, they will stop making it. 19. Doctors’ Law - If you don’t feel well, make an appointment to go to the doctor, by the time you get there you’ll feel better. Don’t make an appointment and you’ll stay sick.
Actor Duffy Hudson to Portray Poe at Sierra Madre Library Bringing an Enigma to Life The Sierra Madre Public Library is pleased to present Broadway and film veteran Duffy Hudson performing as Edgar Allan Poe in a solo show, “The Shadow of the Raven.” The performance, which is free and open to the public, will take place at the Library on Thursday, October 14, at 7:00 p.m. Poe wrote some of the darkest and most chilling tales in American literature, and was himself an enigma. To this day, even the circumstances surrounding his own death remain a mystery. In this
unique play, Poe rises from the dead and looks back at his life through the lens of some of his most famous works. Duffy Hudson is an accomplished actor, director, scriptwriter and filmmaker, having performed on Broadway and offBroadway for more than fourteen years. He has acted in several feature films and directed more than 300 theatrical productions. His film company, Cinncinatus Motion Picture, recently completed a feature film, Tattered Angel, starring Lynda Carter. Middle and High
School students may be able to obtain extra English or Theater class credit for attending this event. Interested students should check with their teachers before the program date to ensure that credit will be given. A proof of attendance form, to be filled out by the student and signed by Library staff, will be available following the performance. olumbus Day is October 11th. This holiday marks that historic landing of Christopher Columbus on the coast of San Salvador in 1492. Today, school textbooks often overlook the true background of this courageous explorer. He was a devout Christian. A man who believed that his voyage to discover the new world was a divinely ordained mission. Historical background concerning Columbus’s adventurous journey states that he credited God for putting into his mind the fact that it would be possible to sail to the new world. Columbus believed that his geographical knowledge was a talent inspired by God. I believe the achievements and the faith of Columbus and the many other valiant explorers of that timehelped set in place the Godly foundation that our forefathers based our wonderful Constitution upon. That reminder inscribed upon our money “In God We Trust” is just as relevant today in our lives as it was in their time. The brilliance of our forefathers is still unequaled. They were responsible for shaping this great land into One Nation, Under God, Indivisible, with Liberty and Justice For All. Based upon the credo from Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address we are also a government “Of the People, For the People and By the People.
Perhaps today, in these crucial times, “We Should Re-discover America”? It seems like this nation is no longer a government “For the People” We now have so many important issues, in which the majority of the “People’s Desires”, are no longer being recognized. Just to bring to mind a few of these serious issues that represent the “Greatest Concerns” of a majority of the people in the USA! The Economy, New Jobs, Secure Our Borders from Illegal entry. Stop the rampant increased government spending. Reduce the increasing size of government. Institute Absolute Fiscal responsibility by balancing the Budgets. Stop the continuous increases in Taxation to meet the overall budget shortfalls. A financial penalty should be levied on every job that is outsourced to another country. We should begin tapping this country’s petroleum resources to reduce imports and the impact of the constant politically generated oil price increases. Last but not the least, we should reconsider the Socialist concepts being suggested ... that we need to re-distribute the wealth of this Capitalist Nation. Perhaps this is also the time to remind our President that he is not just the president of the Democratic Party. He is the President of all, in this Great Nation. Now is the time to bring leadership to America’s problems. Partisan Politics is not longer acceptable. All legislators must
work together to promote the changes that are necessary to get the economy and jobs that are needed. We should adopt a program to explore the wisdom and new ideas from private sector administrators who have had experience resolving similar problems. Of course there are many other issues not being addressed. This includes the frequency of dishonesty among politicians that have been appointed to high offices. We should express America’s Pride and Reputation to the World. It should be reinforced that we are a caring nation rather than the present Administrations careless apology to other countries for our conduct. This presidential view tends to tear down and diminish the great leadership that this Nation has shown throughout the World by many former Presidents. This Administration was proudly elected unanimously by the people therefore it has a responsibility to hear the present loud “Voice of the People” who are seeking His Attention to address their Priority Wants and Needs. It is time for everyone to become more involved in the electoral process and to exercise their voting responsibilities to select those people who wish to improve the American lifestyle. Yes, let’s begin to Re-Discover Our Beautiful America ... and preserve it for our grandchildren and for future generations to come.

No Special Meeting ...yet... in Sierra Madre Continued from page 1 tails published in a timely manner. A meeting on the bond issue will take place at date yet to be determined. Oct 19 is only one possible date. The blog claims that city is “airbrushing the real reasons for asking the people of Sierra Madre to fund a water rate hike.” The fact remains that the city’s infrastructure is old. The pipes need repair, replacement and a host of other issues surround the water issue. 90 plus year old water pipes can burst, as they have in recent months. The City’s water quality and supply is maintained by the Water Division, a department within the Sierra Madre Public Works. The Water Division has two sources by which they pump, treat, and distribute water. One source of the water supply is derived from four wells drawing from the East Raymond Basin aquifer. The second source is derived from natural spring tunnels located in the foothills. Although the city has deferred any water rate increase it is conducting public “walk and Talk” informational meetings hoping to explain why the increase may be necessary. The key element in some residents’ complaints is regarding Prop 218: “Proposition 218 the Right to Vote on Taxes Act was approved by California voters in November 1996. Prop 218 added Articles XIII C and D to the California Constitution. A State Supreme Court case, Bighorn-Desert View Water Agency v. Beringson (July 2006), determined that utility rates (Water and Sewer) are subject to the requirements of Proposition 218. Specifically, Proposition 218 requires the City to provide notice and allow opportunity for a written protest
prior to implementing a water rate increase; if a majority protest is received then the rate increase cannot be adopted. If no written protest is received, then the City may adopt the rate increase.” The agenda report regarding this process and proposed rate increase was published by the city on July 22, 2010. A letter alleging violations of the requirements set forth in California’s Proposition 218 was read during public comment phase of the meeting by Sierra Madre resident Teryl Willis a few weeks ago. Willis spoke on behalf of the letter’s four signatories: Blogger John Crawford and former Mayor Kurt Zimmerman as well as residents Anita Delmer and John Herrmann . City Manager Elaine Aguilar’s response to that letter was published in last week’s paper: We will re run the city’s response for those who may not have read it. “Dear Mr. Kurt Zimmerman, Mr. John Crawford, Mr. John Hermann and Ms. Anita Delmer: Thank you for your September 13, 2010 letter requesting the Council conduct another public hearing and Proposition 218 process for the proposed water rate increases. As stated in your correspondence, the Council did not take action to increase water rates at their July 27th meeting. The Council also has not given direction or discussed any proposals to increase water rates since their July 27th meeting. Accordingly, at this time it would be premature to schedule any public hearings, or to perform a subsequent Proposition 218 ballot process, since we do not know what increase the Council would like to adopt or even if they intend to adopt an increase. Once staff receives formal direction from the City Council regarding whether
and how to increase water rates, a determination will be made regarding the procedural steps necessary to implement the Council’s directive. In the meantime, I will keep your correspondence and will take it under consideration, if and when the Council provides direction regarding water rates. Thank you again for your correspondence and please let me know if I can be of any assistance in the future. As you’re aware, I am always available to meet to discuss any City, or water department related questions, and I appreciate receiving your input and recommendations. Sincerely, Elaine Aguilar City Manager” Elaine Agular added in a correspondence with this newspaper that her response was a direct response to the letter’s demand. The letter was a demand that the, “Council conduct another public hearing upon the proposed rate increase...” Elaine Aguilar also said that her response replied directly to that demand, by stating that “it would be premature to schedule any public hearings, or to perform a subsequent Proposition 218 ballot process, since we do not know what increase the Council would like to adopt or even if they intend to adopt an increase.” If and when the Council provides direction regarding water rates, a determination will be made regarding the necessary steps, according to city manager Aguilar. The 1996 ballot initiative amended the state’s constitution requiring local governments to obtain approval from property owners before applying a tax. City Attorney Sandra Levin said she was confident the city has complied with constitutional requirements and no laws broken.

A Rare Opportunity to Hear First Hand Accounts of How Women are Dealing with Issues Many Take for Granted in the US
There have been many chorale groups in the San Gabriel Valley, lots of them performing for decades. The new kid on the block is the Pasadena Master Chorale, established in 2009. The response Artistic Director/conductor Jeffrey Bernstein received from a nearly full house at the Altadena Community Church on Sunday afternoon foretells that this group is destined to take the lead in chorale singing locally.

He moved through 14 Renaissance choral music numbers with a special introduction to each effectively using a combination of humor and information. Bernstein cleverly

against his army. Bernstein opened the afternoon concert offering a quick overview of music of the 1500s, the time when madrigal and Renaissance music was most productive. “Renaissance was an era hundreds of years before the rise of the modern orchestra,” Bernstein reported. “Orchestras would
come”, he said, “but at the dawn of the Renaissance, great composers wrote glorious masses that were meant to be sung in remarkable resonant sacred settings. And, when it comes to resonance and great acoustics, we’ve found the perfect venue, as our audiences know—Altadena Community Church.” His words proved accurate as the Chorale performed the music of famed composers of the era, Claude Monteverdi, Giovanni da Palestrina, Josquin Desprez, William Byrd and others. The singers of the Pasadena Master Chorale worked well together to produce a strong solid (and restrained) sound. Happily, they held it together throughout the afternoon concert and delivered each song with very clear diction. Not an easy task given the difficulty of many of the numbers. I point to the vocal intensity in Josquin’s “Sanctus”, the clean lines in “Sicut Cervus” (by Palestrina) and the on-spot harmonies heard in Thomas Morley’s “Sing We and Chant It “. The loss of intensity in “Ecco Mormoror L’Onde” (“Lo, The Murmer of the Waves”) was more than balanced by the powerful delivery in the secular madrigal “Si Ch’io Vorrei Morire” (“Yes I Would Like to Die” [in the arms of my love]) by Monteverdi and the awesome Josquin “Ave Maria” and its stunning “A-men” ending.
The Arcadia Woman’s Club is slated to Host International Women’s Health Care Advocate, Taraneth Salke, who recently returned from her 17th trip to Afghanistan, working under the radar of the Taliban. Salke will discuss life in Afghanistan with astonishing and rare honesty as well as show images which will help illustrate what life, in actuality, is like for women in remote regions and villages in other parts of the world. Salke will be discussing her time living and working with the medical community in villages of Iran, Sierra Leon as well as Afghanistan. Taraneth Salke is the founder and Executive Director of Family Health Alliance (FHA) which is a female led, not for profit, non-political organization that focuses attention on
the reproductive health and rights of women in countries with little or no resources. Taraneth Salke is a frequent lecturer at UCLA and Cal State Northridge. The unique opportunity to see Taraneth Salke will take place November 3, at 11am. It is open to everyone. Thanksgiving luncheon will be served at a cost of

You Fatties are Making our Insurance Premiums Go Up BY LYNDA LINFORTH I knew nothing about it and did some research. At our next session I told her that I thought it was unhealthy (and secretly thought it was a copout) and she was already on the right track and should just knuckle down. Her Cardiologist had told her that her heart could not sustain her weight for much longer. At the rate we were going, it would take almost 4 years for her to lose the weight, and although she had no pre-existing heart issues, her doctor felt that she should do the surgery. I was professionally conflicted but I agreed to work out with her before and after her surgery. The thought of her not being there for her daughter was more than she could bear. Rachel lost the required ‘good faith’ pre-surgery weight, educated me about the surgery, showed me her scars, shared with me her eating changes and continued working out with me post surgery. That experience changed my attitude towards this surgery for life threatening situations. I have come to understand, through extensive work with clients who are pre and post surgery candidates, that not everyone reaching out for this surgery is looking for a quick fix or a way to cheat. Some of them do not have the time left to do it the way I want them to do it. Some of them know that it is either surgery or death. We can all pontificate that they should not have gotten into that situation in the first place but until you have walked a mile in someone else’s shoes, do not judge them. Do not misunderstand me, I am still not a fan of the
Someone said this to my client, Rebecca*, after she had gone through gastric bypass surgery. My heart sank for her when she told me. She had taken it in her stride, as she had always done with comments about her weight throughout her entire life, but I felt for her and it also sparked a twinge of guilt in me. I am not a proponent for bariatric surgery. Why would I be? I lost a lot of weight myself by diet and exercise and it was difficult and frustrating. I never took short cuts or pills or even thought of resorting to surgery. I looked down on people who did not have the discipline to do what I had done; got frustrated with clients who used our sessions as a confessional for all of the unhealthy things they had eaten, after we had spent an entire hour mapping out their eating plans the session before. ‘What’s the point if you’re not going to do what I say?” I would think and on the rare occasion, say out loud. Eight years ago, before bariatric surgery ads were ubiquitous, I met Rachel*. She was a sweet, caring woman in her 40s who weighed over 350 lbs. She wanted to work out and try to lose her weight so she could play with her 4 year old adopted daughter. I gave her an eating plan and worked out with her three times a week. She was losing weight steadily but it was only a pound a week and at 5 ft 1 inch, she wanted to lose 200 lbs. After a visit to her doctor, she told me that she wanted to have bariatric surgery.

Parsons Awarded $120 Million Contract for “Positive Train Control System” At a special board meeting held Friday Oct 1, the Metrolink Board of Directors authorized its CEO, John E. Fenton, to complete the final terms and conditions to award a $120 million contract to Parsons Transportation Group to manage and integrate Positive Train Control (PTC) technology on Metrolink’s 512-mile system. “Today’s action puts us one step closer to our goal of being the first railroad to implement PTC and the safest rail operator in the nation,” said Metrolink Board Chairman Keith Millhouse. “Metrolink has outlined an aggressive implementation schedule that will allow our passengers to be among the first in the nation to benefit from this safety innovation.” Metrolink was the na-

Midway Madness: The All Class Reunion BY SUSAN MOTANDER What a swellagent, elegant party it was (apologies to Cole Porter). The party was the all class reunion of Monrovia, Arcadia, Duarte High School held on the flight deck of the USS Midway. And class it head. It also had over 350 people in attendance with alumni from classes ranging from 1937 to 1985. Technically it was the 60th reunion of the class of 1950 from which group the organizers came; therefore the greatest concentration of grads came from the late forties and early fifties. This seems appropriate as they were the students who would remember both the ship and the battle for which it was named. Some of the alumni present were graduates from the war years and served in W.W.II, including that 1937 grad who was a Marine Aviator. Many of the graduates in attendance saw service during the Korean conflict as did the Midway, but she stayed on active duty
of the ship. Also on the hanger deck were displays of photos from various MAD classes, the viewing of which gave the alumni a chance to find old friends. Then it was up to the flight deck for Hors d’oeuvres and cocktails and more reminiscing.

The evening began with champagne and photos on the hanger deck. For those so inclined there was the opportunity to try their hand on the flight simulators or just a tour
the other members of their committee. It was a large committee, but then it was a major event. Admiral John “Mac” McLaughlin, the President and CEO of the USS Midway Museum welcomed everyone and gave a brief history of the ship which was launch in
Arianna Afsar. Father James Miller, class of ‘48 then did a little reminiscing and gave the reunion a blessing. The chairmen of the reunion, Jim Regan and Don Cottle greeted everyone and acknowledged
1945 when many of those present were not even in high school (some not even born). The Midway is now a floating museum docked in San Diego and open for tours to the public. Throughout the cocktail hour the quests had been entertained by music from the South Coast Swing Band. After the initial welcomes, the music took an even livelier turn with a trio of Andrews sister like artist, Company B, which gave the crowd songs from the forties and fifties. Dinner followed and it was well worth the wait: there was something for every taste and diet. A carving station for the carnivores, or pasta for the less aggressive. There was also a fajita bar for those cognizant of their proximity to Mexico. All the oohs and ahhs were not limited to the food or the music. The real surprise was yet to come. Following dinner there was more entertain-

New Dean of Cuisine - Ecole de Cuisine’s Farid Zadi - Gets Students Cooking By Terry Miller
E
cole De Cuisine’s Dean of Culinary Arts, Chef Farid Zadi, believes students shouldn’t go into crippling debt as they start in the culinary field and therefore he and his wife Susan Park started a little culinary school, with an appropriately French name - Ecole de Cuisine. Ecole de Cuisine’s mission, if you will, is to deliver exemplary culinary training with a strong foundation in French International technique through individual attention with small classes no larger than 18 persons. Courses will be offered during weekday evenings to accommodate working professionals who might not otherwise be able to pursue a new career, or hone their culinary skills. Ecole de Cuisine’s program director is the charming and talented Susan Park who told us that for years many students interested in culinary arts education were limited to rather expensive and long courses that didn’t necessarily address their specific interest. The long courses often lead the aspir-
ing chef into some sort of organic oblivion complete with a rather heavy loan to repay. Ecole de Cuisine’s model is to keep it simple, and affordable as well as tailored to
the student’s specific career goals. With the incorporation of business studies and long range plans, students may be better prepared to get into a specialty like pastries rather
than a general, overall cuisine caveat. Born in Lyon, France, Dean of Ecole De Cuisine Chef Farid Zadi began his culinary education as a
teenager working at the renowned Castel de Valrose, just north of Lyon in the village of Montmerle sur Saone . He graduated from École Hôtelier Auguste Escoffier.

The real icing on the reunion cake was the fireworks off the bow of the Midway. These were launched from the flight deck just forward of our dining area. Impressive. LARRAMENDI Alverno Jaguars cross country varsity and junior varsity won their Horizon League opener, defeating host Holy Family (Glendale) Wednesday, September 29th at Pasadena’s Rose Bowl 3 mile course. Four of the five League schools (Alverno, Bishop Conaty, Holy Family and Sacred Heart of Jesus) fielded a total of 60 runners at the meet. Cooler temperatures, a slight breeze and cloudy skies were kinder to the runners than at the BellJeff Invitational at Griffith Park the previous Saturday, September 25th. Jaguar varsity win (3978) was led by sophomore Eryn Blakely (20:12), senior Audrey Davy (21:54), sophomore Ashley Haylett (23:32), freshman Jessica Lopez (23:45) and senior Kelly Janzen (25:39) who came in 1st, 2nd, 6th, 10th and 20th respectively in the varsity race. The Junior Varsity,
led by freshman Francesca Rueda (26:13), senior Sascha Rosemond (27:20), sophomore Adrianna Martinez (27:27), senior Sahhara Assafiri (27:47) and sophomore Devny Osuna (28:29) swept the top 5 finishers. Jaguar varsity runners Bianca Melkonian, Miranda Akkari and junior varsity runners Holly Coates, Bella Daniels-Campos, Victoria Pintado, Andrea Gochez-Wilson, Reagan Dowd, Madi DanielsCampos and Nicolette Rodriguez helped their teammates in the victory. Team scoring at cross country meets is based on finish order of the team’s top 5 finishers. Next League meet for Alverno is Wednesday, October 6th hosted by Sacred Heart of Jesus at the Griffith Park course. Sacred Heart runners finished well at the Rose Bowl meet and will pose a big challenge for the Alverno runners.
Bosco Tech Milks La Salle 28-21 Bosco Tech and La Salle battled four quarters before the visiting Bosco Tech slammed home a victory in a tough fought game last Friday at La Salle High School. The team operated from the area usually reserved for the visiting side. Perhaps this was a bad omen for La Salle. It was the first time the home team was on the south side of the field.

Swedish Musician Jamie Meyer - Gets Rave Reviews at Novel Café - Great Big Change - Coming to East Pasadena BY TERRY MILLER

nce again an outstanding performer has found his way into what I consider one of East Pasadena’s coolest hubs for live music, Novel Café: Last Saturday David Harbaugh, who represents Jaime Meyer through his company D2R Artists Management, said I should stop by and see what this 30 year old musician from Sweden was all about. I wasn’t expecting ABBA but I know I knew I was in for a real treat! Actually I only liked ABBA because two gorgeous women Frida and Agnetha kept haunting me in my dreams as a kid! But I digress…I’d already listened to Meyer’s 2008 CD “Great Big Change” and was really overwhelmed with not only Jamie’s vocal ability but the production value of the CD. It is really bloody, bloody good! The bass player and drummer particularly impressed me as their playing was full of what they left out - they didn’t overplay anything - as is a tendency ( especially with drummers) If I had one suggestion to give the producers of that album it would be add a truly unique guitar solo in a couple of the middle eighths – one was there occasionally but the mix was too low to really hear it. During his first break of
Photos by Terry Miller the evening I asked Jamie to play my particular favorite on the album made in 2008 (Heaven isn’t far Away) but unfortunately it really needed the full band to do the number justice and therefore my wish wasn’t granted. Meyer’s vocal range is superb and spot on. The few songs he played off his 2008 CD were testament to his strong vocal ability and propensity for great hooks. The commercial appeal of Meyer is not superficial – the music gets down into your bones.
The owner of Novel Café, Andrew Lo, has recently joined forces with D2R ( who manages Jamie Meyer) to handle the music promotion side of his eclectic music café/restaurant that is constantly evolving based on musical themes. I liken the Novel Café to a really cool club in New York, called the Bottom Line on W 4th Street I frequented some years back. Actually I think the club is still kicking out some of the best Jazz to this day. There is no preten-
tiousness, nor ever a cover charge at Novel. There’s always great food and drink (excellent beers and wines) plus a young crowd of music lovers like David Peterson who pops in regularly for “a cool beer and some really cool atmosphere.” Peterson, a long time Pasadena resident who happens to be of Swedish descent, knows talent when he sees it and is quick to recommend bands like Anita and the Yanks (which is how I heard about them, thanks Dave) as well as support local businesses in East
Pasadena. A firm believer in the growth potential for East Pasadena, Andrew Lo’s vision is fast becoming a reality. Other area businesses such as Luigi Ortegas, just one block west of Novel Café, is also seeing increased traffic and interest in the area. L.O’s owner frequently pops in to say hi to Lo. Andrew Lo is an illustrious music lover and has an uncanny knack of attracting musicians with something a little diverse to offer his customers each week.
Instinctively he’s managed to find some of the best in the business in just about all genres. This Friday, one of the more popular Irish Bands Andrew Lo first hired sometime back, Anita and the Yanks will appear for their bi-weekly performance of traditional meets classic Irish rock. As an added bonus Rachel and Leah ( not the Biblical wives of Jacob) might be found playing some incredible violin(s) with Anita. Rachel Grace and Leah Zegar are two amazingly talented young musicians. Getting back to Jamie who began 2010 by connecting with the film industry with an invitation to perform at Sundance Music Festival in Utah. His new single “Good Night To Be Young” has been greeted with brilliant feedback from L.A Music Connection & the HOLLYWOOD MUSIC in MEDIA AWARDS Jury 2010 which , handed a nomination to Jamie in the Country category. In the spring the song also charted and reached #1 in the Country genre by the Ourstage.com community. The tomatoes used for the Bouillabaisse were slightly steamed and peeled and, again, precisely cut while actually removing the seeds and center part of the tomato – Chef say’s the seeds interfere with the overall effect of the Bouillabaisse. I could go on for hours about how Chef prepared the dish but would rather

Vista Cove Resident Nadya Lanyi will soon Reach Year 105 “When I turned 100, I thought it was time to retire” she quipped.
T
here are a million stories at Vista Cove senior living center in Arcadia. However, one struck us recently as a little unique. From dealing with traumatic events like seeing her grandmother being shot in Russia to waiting on extremely long breadlines as a child she was beaten by Cossacks. It wasn’t an easy life. During the Russian Civil War, Cossack regions became centers for the Anti-Bolshevik White movement, a portion of whom would form the White emigration. The Don and Kuban Cossacks even formed short-lived independent states in their respective territories. With the victory of the Red Army, the Cossack lands were subjected to famine, and suffered extensive repressions. During the Second World War, Cossacks fought for both the Soviet Union and for Nazi Germany. Dealing with such struggles made Nadya all the more determined and strong. Her work ethic which began at 8 lasted 92 years. Nadya Lanyi decided it was time to stop working once she reached a certain age. That milestone was 100. Soon to be 105, Nadya Lanyi worked until a mere four years ago. We kid you not. Nadya “though it was time to relax a little” once she turned 100. She had been working at polling stations, helping people understand the process and guiding them through the electoral system. After years of raising a family and working all her

also loved hiking all her life so her physical strength is well maintained. Eventually after a long chase, New York’s finest tracked down the slimy culprits and had them under arrest. An officer tracked down Nadya so she could ID one of the perpetrators. Once positive ID was established, one of NY’s boys in blue said “Would you like to hit him?” the officer was referring to the mugger who stole her purse. Responding in the affirmative, Nadya took her right
hand and slapped the offender right across his kisser with all her might! She and the officers had a good laugh about that! We all had a good laugh hearing that story. Talk about New York justice! Nadya is new to the area ( she’s been here about 14 months) after living the past 70 years in the same rent controlled apt in Manhattan where she raised her family. Vista Cove is a far cry from the apt, on 101st Street in New York City across from the Hudson River. That apartment appar-
ently rents for considerably more that the $500 Nadya paid. What’s her secret to longevity: Simple, Hard work, hiking as well as good food and exercise. Although she admits to smoking a little earlier in life, she says she stopped and that was another reason she outlived two of her three sons she claims. Nadya stressed that steaming vegetables for a “very brief time” was also key to her health. This combined with fresh salmon, apples and other fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables. Nadya started working in Maripol, Ukraine when she was only 8 years old where she lived in an orphanage . Mariupol is an important industrial center and seaport. Two of its steel mills - Ilyich Iron and Steel Works and Azovstal are among the largest in the country and make up a significant part of Ukraine’s total exports. It was here that Nadya worked so many years. She really wanted to be a librarian but found typing jobs instead in many companies in the Ukraine. Before we left, we had a chance to see some of Nadya’s sculptures and collection of photographs ( Oh yes, and a letter from President Obama) Her son, Ron, who visits her almost every day is a professor of English at PCC stopped by at the conclusion of our first meeting last week. Nadya admits she missed New York but enjoys her time at Vista Cove except she says “ they are always feeding me….I have a bit of a tummy now.”

Financing of Rose Bowl Stadium Improvements will be Subject of Public Meetings The iconic Rose Bowl Stadium, a national historic landmark constructed in 1922, is one of the oldest football stadiums in the nation and has hosted annual Rose Bowl football games, five Super Bowls, Olympic competitions, World Cup of Soccer and Women’s World Cup, UCLA home games, major concerts and countless other events. On Monday, Oct. 4, in a workshop setting, the Pasadena City Council will learn more about renovation of the Rose Bowl Stadium. Sierra Madre Police Officer Security Fees Come Under Scrutiny An outraged resident of Sierra Madre alleges on a blog that the city of Sierra Madre charges $138 an hour for police officer security. Somewhat confused, we contacted the city manager for clarification. According to Elaine Aguilar, the City of Sierra Madre actually charges only $100/hr per hour for an officer at a film shoot or other events. Through the current Temporary Use Permit (TUP) process, the Police and other impacted departments work with the event organizers to determine the appropriate number of personnel necessary. When an
event is co-sponsored by the City, a 50% waiver is generally granted, which means the City charges $50/hr per officer for events like the Wistaria Festival, etc. The actual amount of $128 ( Not $138 as a blog alleges) is from the City’s cost of services study -- and the $128 reflects the fully burdened hourly rate of one officer. The fully burdened hourly rate includes: the salary, all benefits and overhead (including, but not limited to supplies, vehicle use, vehicle maintenance, gasoline, payroll, accounts payable, utilities, liability deposits (insurance), etc.) So this
$128 rate is not comparable to what other cities “charge” for an officer to work a special event. The comparable rate (“apples and apples comparisons”) for other cities would entail obtaining their “fully burdened hourly rate.” Additionally, the $128 is also not the cost of an “offduty officer.” The City of Sierra Madre Police department doesn’t have enough staff to provide an “off duty officer” for private use. When there is an event and officers are needed, the officers are basically scheduled to work the event. Officers for film duty

and that ranged from $50/hr - $142/hr. Many of the cities the size of Sierra Madre utilize the Sheriffs who charge between $60 -$70 per hour for unburdened. For the record we checked with some other cities. The City of Monrovia says it utilizes CHP for special events. The City of Pasadena bills at S72.15 for a Police Officer and $81.36 for a Police Corporal. That is the overtime rate for each classification PLUS a 28.48% fee added by the City to recuperate processing.

Monrovian Ivan Waldemar Berg Passes Away Ivan Waldemar Berg, Born on October 15, 1931in Blair, Wisconsin and passed away on September 25, 2010 in Monrovia, California. He was preceded in death by his wife MaryJon Reedall Berg and is survived by daughter Lori (Chris) Barrera, son Brian (Suzanne) Berg; sister Naomi (Raiden) Peterson; brothers Roald (Marlene) & Erling (Helen) Berg, and two aunts Wilma and Charlotte Berg.
Ivan was also a member of the VFW Post 2070 for 15 years, acting as Commander for 7 years. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 9th 10:00AM at Douglass & Zook Chapel of Remembrance Funeral Home, 600 E. Foothill, Monrovia, CA 91016. For the period of Sunday, September 26, through Saturday, October 2, the Police Department responded to 991 calls for service of which 95 required formal investigations. The following is a summary report of the major incidents handled by the Department during this period.
Sunday, September 26: A unit was dispatched to Ralph’s at 16 East Live Oak Ave. in reference to a report of a theft. A female was detained by loss prevention. Store security observed the female select several store items, remove their security tags and conceal the merchandise in her purse. The female was taken into custody for petty theft. Officers responded to 400 S. Baldwin Avenue, Macy’s, regarding a female adult being detained for theft. Loss prevention personnel observed the female take several items of clothing and enter a fitting room, where she concealed two shirts in her purse. A private person’s arrest was made and the female was taken into custody for petty theft. Monday, September 27: Officers were dispatched to 12340 Lower Azusa Road, Public Storage, regarding the burglary of 2 storage units. Three suspects, two male Hispanics and one female Hispanic, were captured on tape entering and exiting the storage facility, one of which rents a unit at the facility. Victims of the burglary were able to identify their items from the security footage. The victim came to the station around 11:38 a.m. to report his vehicle had been vandalized by an unknown person. The brake line and power steering line were cut with a razor. While making repairs to his vehicle, a razorblade was found in a protective undercarriage pan below the vehicle’s oil pan. Tuesday, September 28: A unit was dispatched to the Bank of America at 169 E. Foothill Blvd., regarding a female attempting to cash a fraudulent check. The female was contacted by officers as she walked through the parking lot. During a search, officers found a hypodermic needle and syringe containing a brown liquid substance. The female was
taken into custody. A traffic stop was conducted on Longden Ave., west of 6th St. around 11:38 a.m. The Officer detected the odor of marijuana and conducted a search of the vehicle. The officer recovered a glass marijuana pipe and a small plastic baggie which contained marijuana. The driver was cited for driving without a license, driving without insurance and operating a vehicle while in possession of marijuana. His passenger was cited for possession of less than one ounce of marijuana. Wednesday, September 29: Officers conducting extra patrol at 225 Colorado Place, Motel 6, came upon a male subject sleeping in his car. Officers made contact with the person and a records check revealed he was a missing runaway out of Riverside, CA. Officers were dispatched to 400 S. Baldwin Ave., Macy’s, where a female adult was held for theft. The female was observed selecting several items and then enter a dressing room. While in the dressing room, she removed receipts and tags from an envelope inside her purse, removed the tags from the items selected and replaced them with the ones from her purse. She then proceeded to the register to obtain a refund. The female was placed under arrest for commercial burglary. Thursday, September 30: A unit was dispatched to 11930 Goldring Rd., Hickman Mechanical, regarding an audible alarm. Upon arrival the officer saw the door was open and the locking mechanism had been damaged. It appeared it had been pried open with an unknown tool. Items stolen were a Milwaukee band saw and a Dewalt hand drill. Approximate loss was $1,200. Officers were dispatched to Bank of America at 169 East Foothill Blvd. regarding a female approximately 20 years old trying to cash a fraudulent check. While the teller was verifying the signature, it was determined that the check was fraudulent. The female was taken into custody. Friday, October 1: A victim came to the station around 1:26 p.m. to file a fraud report. The victim received credit card statements for cards that she did
not apply for. Upon further questioning of the victim and her family, it is revealed that three other family members have also been victims of fraud. A unit responds to 720 West Naomi Ave., #G, Subway, regarding a battery which had just occurred. The suspect approached the victim at her place of employment and slapped her in the face and walked away. Saturday, October 2: An Officer was dispatched to 180 Campus Drive, Arcadia High School, regarding an industrial accident. The victim was working on the 2nd floor of the Science building. While moving a freestanding floor fan, the victim received an electric shock. A faulty electrical cord was found to be the cause of the shock. The victim was taken to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation. A traffic stop for a moving violation was made at Peck Road and Clark St. around 1:16 a.m. The driver was found to be under the influence of alcohol and unable to safely operate a motor vehicle. The passenger was also found to be under the influence of alcohol. Both individuals were taken into custody.
Monrovia PD
During the last seven day period, the Police Department handled 526 service events, resulting in 123 investigations. Following are the last week’s highlighted issues and events:
Robbery September 23 at 6:27 a.m., an officer responded to Duarte and Myrtle regarding a robbery that had just occurred. A female victim reported that a male subject in his early 20s, thin build, buzzed haircut, no facial hair, and wearing a baggie gray sweatshirt exited a vehicle and punched her. The suspect grabbed her purse and got back into a black, four-door vehicle, possibly a Nissan Maxima, and fled southbound on Myrtle. The victim sustained a cut above her right eye. Investigation continuing. Grand Theft September 23 at 12:54
p.m., an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 700 block of West Duarte regarding a theft. The victim parked his motorized bicycle in front of his door in the evening, but failed to secure it. The next day, he went outside to go to work and found his bicycle was missing. He did not hear anything suspicious during the night. Possession of a Controlled Substance Suspects Arrested September 24 at 2:18 a.m., an officer observed a suspicious vehicle near a business in the 3000 block of Peck Road. As the officer approached the vehicle, the female passenger tossed a folded one dollar bill out the window. The officer retrieved the bill and found cocaine inside. Both female subjects were taken into custody, one for an outstanding warrant and the other for the possession of a controlled substance. Assault September 24 at 2:41 p.m., an officer met with the victim of an assault who had come to the police station to file a report. The victim was in a wheelchair and was accompanied by a friend. The victim reported that he had been at a bar in 300 block of West Huntington on Friday, September 17. He said he had been drinking and that two subjects had assaulted him. He was driven to a hospital and admitted for injuries. The victim did not have much information to provide about the incident. Investigation continuing. Residential Burglary On September 24 at 10:41 p.m., an officer responded to the 500 block of East Foothill regarding a residential burglary. Unknown suspects had entered the victim’s residence and the victim’s rear house through open bathroom windows. Once inside, the locations the suspects stole a television set and power tools. The investigation is continuing. Driving Under the Influence - Suspect Arrested September 25 at 2:34 a.m., an officer stopped a motorist at Evergreen and Mayflower for an unsafe turning movement. A subsequent investigation revealed the driver was intoxicated.
The driver was arrested for driving under the influence. Grand Theft September 25 at 10:41 a.m., an officer responded to the parking lot of a business in the 100 block of West Foothill regarding a theft. The female victim had pushed her shopping cart to her vehicle. As she opened the door of her car, a vehicle pulled up next to the shopping cart and a subject grabbed her purse from the cart and fled in the vehicle. Investigation continuing. Burglary September 25 at 3:56 p.m., a business in the 500 block of West Huntington reported a theft. An officer responded and determined a subject had walked into the store, grabbed a mesh shopping bag, selected three men’s electric shavers and exited the store without paying. As the loss prevention officers exited the store, they saw the suspect getting into a burgundy Toyota Camry that fled the scene. Investigation continuing. Possession of a Controlled Substance Suspect Arrested September 26 at 3:55 a.m., an officer was on patrol and saw a suspicious vehicle parked on Ivy, south of Huntington. As he made contact with the occupant, he noticed the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. The suspect admitted to having marijuana and ecstasy pills in his vehicle and consented to a search of the vehicle. The officer located a small amount of marijuana and 16 tablets of Ecstasy that were concealed in the door panel of the vehicle. The suspect was arrested and taken into custody. Grand Theft Auto Recovery / Mental Evaluation September 27 at 8:52 p.m., dispatch received a call reporting that a mentally unstable, male subject had left a facility in Pasadena and was possibly in the Monrovia area, as his mother lives in Monrovia. He had gone to his grandparent’s home in Arcadia, where he stole his grandfather’s truck. His grandfather reported the truck stolen with Arcadia Police Department. Officers located the subject and detained him. They confirmed he had taken the truck without permission. He stated voices in his head told him to take the truck. The subject was taken to a hospital and held for mental evalu-
ation. The truck was recovered and returned to the grandparents.
Sierra Madre PD
During the week of Sunday, September 26, to Saturday October 2RD, the Sierra Madre Police Department responded to approximately 360 calls for service.
Sunday, September 26th: 06:05 PM- Suspicious Circumstances, 200 block E. Alegria Ave. A party reported seeing a man who looked like the subject of a restraining order that prohibited him from coming near the location. Officers searched for the man, but did not find him. Wednesday, September 29th: 01:58 PM- Attempted Residential Burglary, 500 block E. Orange Ave. A resident returned home and found that unknown suspect had damaged a window screen while trying to force entry into her home. No entry was made. The incident occurred on Tuesday around 1:50 pm. Thursday, September 30th: 07:00 AM- Residential Burglary, 300 block Sierra Woods Drive A resident returned home and found that an unknown suspect had forced entry into their home, searched the interior and stole a 42“ Sony flat screen TV, an HP mini laptop computer, two Sony Cyber digital cameras, Philadelphia Flyers hockey cards, and wedding clothing. The approximate loss is $3,200.00 03:37 PM- Attempted Residential Burglary, 50 block W. Laurel Ave. The suspect tried to pry open a window, but did not get in. The suspect is possibly an acquaintance. 10:36 PM- Warrant/ Outside/Traffic, 70 block W. Sierra Madre Blvd. Officers responded to a report of a suspicious person walking around. Officers determined that the man had three arrest warrants for him and arrested him. Officers took him to Pasadena jail for booking. Friday, October 1st: 10:58 PM- Residential Burglary, 100 block Rancho Rd. A resident called the police department to report that unknown subjects entered her unlocked vehicles through her open garage door and ransacked them. The only loss is a garage door opener valued at approximately $15.00.
