n this volunteer driven community, it seems one of the most visible non-profit associations, the Sierra Madre Rose Float Association, is severely lacking in that department. The amount of people and man hours it takes to create this independent float is phenomenal. Volunteers are needed now! The building of the Rose Float really starts the day after New Year’s Day - and continues throughout the year with the final push being on the last two weeks in December. What the average person may not realize is that the construction process and preparations including welding, carpintry are critical in making a safe and beautiful award winning float which the Association has managed to produce five years in a row now. There is a misconception that they (SMRFA) need people a few days prior to the completion (i.e. putting on the flowers). The reality is they need volunteers now. Skill level is not important, what is essential is a willingness to learn. There are always a handful of skilled artisans on hand willing to share their expertise and train those interested skills such as bending pencil steel and

BY FRAN SYVERSON here I stood in the garden department of a huge home improvement store, shopping for dirt. I could scarcely believe it! I, who had grown up on a farm, where there was dirt a-plenty. I, who had until recently owned a sizeable city lot, and had dug and hoed and weeded in virtually every square foot of its dirt. But now, in my downsized retirement home, two small plots of dirt were all

ange marigolds, but little had I imagined that I’d have so many kinds of dirt to choose from. Here was something called garden gro-mulch; it’s for garden beds and trees. That might work. Then again there’s top soil. Somehow that sounded like a layer to put atop the existing soil, rather like frosting on a cake. No, my problem probably goes deeper than that, I decided.

Isn’t all dirt “natural”? But since I wasn’t putting the dirt into pots, I moved on down the aisle. One thing was ruled out on the spot—manure blend. My childhood farm memories of manure’s pervasive odor made that decision easy. Finally I found a bag that sounded about as generic as you can get with commercial dirt. It said it was “garden soil” for “inground use.” I chose a size

I had to dig and plant in. First I’d tried some petunias in the corner by our sidewalk. They blossomed stalwartly, creating a welcoming spot of red. For a while. Then they began a long, slow withering, fading finally into nothingness. Petunias are so reliable that one could almost consider them a weed, if they weren’t so pretty. So why did they die? Green-thumb sleuth that I am, I hit upon a clue. Not even weeds grew in that spot. Surely, I decided, the soil must be tired and worn out. And that’s why I was standing in this garden department, looking in amazement at the selection of huge sacks of dirt on the shelves. I’d resigned myself to stirring in some fresh new soil before I planted the six-pack of or-

Lawn topping obviously wasn’t for me; I’m not trying to put new soil on top of grass. Palm and cactus mix—nope. “Good for azaleas and camellias”—nope, not that either. Here’s soil amender for clay soils, but I really hadn’t analyzed my four square feet of soil, and had no idea whether it was clay, loam, or sand. Nor did I want sphagnum peat moss. Better try for something more generalized. Potting soil—you could get all-natural potting soil. “All natural?” What an overused euphemism!

I could have saved all that quandary over which kind of dirt to buy, for one look at the old bag’s label told me that it, like my new one, was “garden soil” for “in-ground use.”

Boy Scouts Honor Her Honor, Monrovia Mayor Lutz with Distinguished Citizen Award BY KARIN CREHAN, MONROVIA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE It was my pleasure on Friday night to attend the San Gabriel Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America dinner to honor Mayor Mary Ann Lutz with the 2010 Distinguished Citizen Award. Hosted by the San Gabriel Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America and Lucky Baldwin District Chairman and Arcadia City Council Member, Robert C. Harbicht. This

award is given to honor prominent area leaders who have a wide influence in the business and professional community, while serving as exemplary role models for our young people. Mary Ann Lutz’s contributions to the quality of life in our community and her commitment to youth and the values of Scouting make her a particularly appropriate honoree. Speaking to a room full of community leaders you could certainly tell that Mary Ann was pleased

with receiving this award, and her words clearly reflected the sentiment of Scouting, “The reason this award is so special is because of the organization that stands behind it. I believe there is no better way to express it than by stating this: The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law.” Mary Ann has a personal connection to scouting as well,

her four brothers were scouts and her nephew became an Eagle Scout two years ago, and she said, “I know personally how that achievement has changed his life.” She went on to highlight the positive results of Scouting and noted some Eagle Scout projects in our community included work in Canyon Park, painting and cleaning area schools, churches and community areas. In addition, a current project will post identifying markers for historic walking tours in our community.

Heal Your Heel BY LYNDA LINFORTH

ecently, there has been a rise in heel pain in my clients. This has prompted me to do some extensive research into this area, and I have found some interesting results. Many cases of heel pain are caused by: inflammation of the fascia between the heel and the sole or a past injury that causes a change in gait or bruising. Probably the most common cause is steady weight gain followed by inactivity. This causes an unnatural load on the most sensitive part of the foot. However, athletes are not exempt. There is a high percentage of active people that suffer from repetitive injuries (tendonitis, bruising and plantar fascitis) and especially those who partake in high impact activities such as running, sports and aerobics, seem to be at high risk if they do not take precautions. The following chronic heel disorders that my clients have reported have been diagnosed by their doctors: Plantar fascitis: inflammation of the fascia between the heel and the sole. Bone spurs: a projection or abnormal growth of the bone. Bruised calcaneus (heel bone): He fell from a considerable height onto his foot. Achilles tendonitis: damage done to the calcaneal (Achilles) tendon that has never healed, resulting in swelling, tenderness and pain. Symptoms of the

above disorders can be very similar for each problem, and are therefore often misdiagnosed. A bone spur can be detected easily by an X-ray, therefore this should be your first port of call. Other symptoms include: tenderness in heel; difficulty walking in very flat shoes; pain after sleeping in one position and difficulty walking in the morning; pain during impact activity. I have found that a small number of people tried to push through the pain. These people were the athletes or those who chose not to see a doctor. Unfortunately, this only compounds the problem and will often result in: Continued chronic pain in heels Change of gait, which can lead to abnormal biomechanics and this affects the knee, hip and lower back, causing pain and damage Muscle cramping in the gastrocnemius and soleus (calf muscles), hamstrings & lower back Shorting of the gastrocnemius and soleus causes misuse of joints and muscles in the lower body and can cause muscles to tear If you are adamant about healing your heel, then a visit to the doctor is the way to begin. The first priority is to get the inflammation down. This can be done with anti-inflammatories and applying ice to the affected area. If pain persists, then often a GP will prescribe cortisone injections. Cortisone shots are only a temporary solution to the pain. However, this numbing type agent will al-

low the client to perform exercises and stretches that will help without causing them pain. There are two down sides to this: 1) you can’t feel if you are doing further damage to your heel 2) cortisone, over time, can wear down the muscles and connective tissue in the area of the injection. Doctors recommend only three shots in the same place in a lifetime. If you are diagnosed with a bone spur, then usually the only way to remove it is surgery. The spur is removed and the bone is left smooth. Here are some ways that you can aid the healing process: Do not resort to wearing completely flat shoes, this will only aggravate a very tight area. Wear comfortable elevated shoes or tennis shoes. Stretch calves and hamstrings daily, or whenever they feel very tight. Do not stretch a cold muscle: stretch after activity. Ice regularly. Getting the inflammation down is critical to recovery. Cellist to Perform at Good Shepherd Concert Series By Bill Peters The Church of the Good Shepherd’s music series Music in Sacred Spaces continues at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7 in Arcadia. Artistic Director of the series, Timothy Durkovic, will bring cellist Timothy Landauer to the Sunday afternoon program to perform works by Schumann, Chopin and Rachmaninoff. Landauer is currently the principal cellist of Orange County’s Pacific Symphony. He has been hailed as an extraordinarily gifted cellist and is winner of several prestigious awards. Born in Shanghai, Landauer received his initial training at Shanghai Conservatory Middle School. In the United States, he has studied with Eleonore Schoenfeld at USC. At USC, he was invited to join the faculty as a lecturer and assistant to cellist Lynn Harrell immediately after receiving his master’s degree. Durkovic, who serves as Director of Music at the church, is a noted pianist. He will accompany Landauer for this performance. A donation of $15 is requested at the door. some of her research during a unique fundraising presentation at the Arcadia Woman’s Club Wednesday afternoon for about 100 guests. Although Salke’s work is primarily focused on women’s’ issues in Afghanistan, she quickly pointed out how important it is to get men involved in the care of their wives, mothers or sisters in a society that doesn’t value women as highly as men. Salke showed video tape of a young woman who was forced into an unhappy marriage for the sole purpose of bearing children for her husband – the young woman was deeply saddened by her situation and had to find a clinic that would help her. While her husband didn’t believe in birth control, she felt an IUD might be an answer for her situation without her husbands’s knowledge.Salke’s female led non-for profit organization is focused on reproductive rights of women not only in Afghanistan but also Iran and Sierra Leon. Oâ€™Connell warned that further progress to efficiently enroll hungry students in school nutrition programs will be delayed as a result of the Governorâ€™s veto of funding for CALPADS. â€œSince the integration of our school nutrition certification program with CALPADS last August, school districts have enrolled hundreds of thousands of eligible, hungry children in school nutrition programs,â€? Oâ€™Connell said. â€œSchool meal programs ensure that Califor-

nia children are ready to learn, grow, and become successful adults. In these tough economic times, school nutrition programs provide the only consistently healthy meals for many students, who would otherwise go hungry. â€œBy utilizing CALPADS, districts were able to directly certify an additional 212,000 students for free meals in just three months, about a 47 percent increase from the previous yearâ€™s total when the California Department of Education used a system other than CALPADS. The students were immediately eligible for free, healthy lunches and breakfasts at school, and districts eliminated hundreds of thousands of pages of paperwork. The Governorâ€™s short-sighted veto of CALPADS funding means system improvements that could directly certify another 10 to 30 percent more students are now on hold.â€? Currently more than 2.1 million students in

California public school districts are eating a free or reduced-priced lunch, but more than a million other students are eligible and do not participate in the program. HBO's ‘Luck'To Resumes Production Season-One Based At Santa Anita, To Debut Next Fall

The runners have competed in 3 meets within the last 8 days and at each meet, most have improved their personal bests at each course. It started with the Horizon League meet hosted by Alverno at Eaton Canyon on October 22nd. The weather seemed to motivate the Jaguars to improved performances as the JV squad won and the Varsity did not falter in the League standings. At the 63rd Annual Mt. POLICE BLOTTERS Monrovia PD

During the last seven day period, the Police Department handled 564 service events, resulting in 111 investigations. Following are the last week’s highlighted issues and events: Grand Theft Auto On October 21 at 8:24 a.m., an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of West Duarte regarding the theft of a vehicle. The victim reported that his wife had parked and secured their vehicle on the street in the evening. He returned to the vehicle in the morning and it was gone. There was no broken glass on the street where the vehicle had been parked and they accounted for all of the keys to the vehicle. The vehicle is a red 1993 Honda Accord. Vehicle Burglary On October 21 at 11:04 a.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 300 block of West Foothill regarding a vehicle break-in. The victim told the officer someone had broken into her vehicle through a window and stolen her purse. Investigation continuing. Residential Burglary On October 21 at 5:17 p.m., an officer went to a residence in the 500 block of King Street regarding the report of a residential burglary. The victim reported that she secured her home and left at 6:45 a.m. and then returned a little after 5 p.m. When she entered the house, she saw a window was broken and her laptop, cell phone and other miscellaneous items were missing. Investigation continuing. Outside Assist / Parole Violation - Suspect Arrested On October 22 at 8:13 a.m., officers responded to a residence in the 900 block of West Olive to assist a California parole agent with the check of a residence. The parole agent was checking up on a parolee and observed an empty high-capacity rifle magazine and thought there might be a weapon at the location. A weapon was not found; however, the parolee was found to be in possession of marijuana. He was arrested and taken into custody. Possession of Burglary Tools - Suspect Arrested On October 22 at 4:36 p.m., an officer was dispatched to the 300 block of

East Palm to a possible vehicle burglary in progress. When the officer arrived, he detained a suspicious person in the alley. The officer discovered the subject was in possession of a window punch, flash light and bolt cutters that had a sling modification attached, which allowed the bolt cutters to be concealed beneath clothing. An area check was conducted, but no evidence of a vehicle burglary was found. The suspect was arrested for possession of burglary tools. Grand Theft On October 23 at 6:20 a.m., an officer responded on the report of a stolen bicycle in the 100 block of West Lemon. The victim reported that he left his $1,500 road bike near the front door of his apartment. He last saw the bike at 11:30 p.m. the night before and discovered it missing in the morning. The bicycle was unsecured. Grand Theft - Suspect Arrested On October 23 at 9:51 a.m., an officer was dispatched to a business in the 1600 block of South Mountain regarding a grand theft. The suspect, a female employee of the business, was ringing up fraudulent sales transactions and issuing fraudulent store credit for the value of the merchandise under the name of a another former female employee. The corporate office discovered the suspicious transactions and alerted the Monrovia location of the business. The female employee was arrested. Vandalism to Vehicles On October 23, several vehicle vandalisms were reported. They occurred in the 500 block of South Myrtle, the 500 block of El Norte, the 800 block of West Duarte and the 1800 block of Tenth Avenue. The vandalism involved windows being scratched and silver spray paint being applied to windows. The vehicle vandalisms appear to be random and do not appear to be gang related. Mental Evaluation On October 27 at 12:02 a.m., officers responded to a location in the 800 block of East Foothill regarding a distraught female. She called a friend, who responded to her residence, then called police. The female suffers from depression. She was taken to a hospital and placed on a 72-hour hold for mental evaluation.

W. Highland Ave. Unknown suspect(s) entered two unlocked vehicles through the driver’s side door and tried to remove the car stereo. No loss was taken from either car. Monday, October 25th: 10:03 AM- Grand Theft Exceeding $400.00, 70 blk. N. Auburn Ave. The suspect took several pieces of jewelry from the victim’s home. The loss included one ½ carat diamond ring, 14k gold wedding band, one 14k yellow gold ribbon ring, one 14k yellow gold square clip on earrings, a 14k gold charm bracelet with four circular and one 14k gold medallion. Total value estimated at $10,800.00. 04:45 PM- Petty Theft. 40 blk. N. Lima St. Unknown suspect(s) stole an unlocked red Mongoose mountain bike. The owner last saw the bike on Friday 10/22/10 at 3:00pm. 11:43 PM- DUI Alcohol/ Drugs. Baldwin Ave and Laurel Ave. An officer stopped a motorist for a Vehicle Code violation. The motorist was under the influence of alcohol or drugs and had three outstanding warrants for his arrest. The suspect was also in possession of a small amount of marijuana. Claremont, CA Police Department forwarded an identity theft report to Sierra Madre Police Department because unauthorized purchases had been made at a restaurant in Sierra Madre using a Claremont resident’s debit card. Fr i d a y, October 29th: 10:25 AM- Property Lost/Stolen. 400 blk. Fairview Ave. Victim discovered that she was missing her wallet while attending an event in Los Angeles. The loss included: one red leather card holder, one CA driver’s license, $100.00, Two Anthem Blue Cross Medical Cards, one State Farms auto insurance card, one Costco Card, one AAA card, One American Express card and a Wells Fargo Visa card. The loss is estimated at approximately $22.00 Saturday, October 30th: 12:22 PM- Possession of Marijuana in Vehicle. Woodland Ave and Santa Anita Ave. Motorist was stopped for a Vehicle Code violation. The driver was in possession of a small amount of marijuana. The officer cited and released the driver.

Arcadia PD Sunday, October 24: Loss prevention personnel from Macy’s advised that they had detained

a woman for theft around 12:20 p.m. The suspect selected various merchandise and switched the price tags on the items with lower marked prices. A private person’s arrest was made, and a 52-year-old Vietnamese was taken into custody for commercial burglary. Around 4:10 p.m., units responded to the 1400 block of Rodeo in reference to a residential burglary. During an open house, a suspect distracted the realtor in the back yard while two other suspects entered the house, ransacked the master bedroom, and stole silver and gold coins, jewelry, and watch. Monday, October 25: . Units were dispatched to Westfield Mall around 8:30 p.m. regarding two male subjects attempting to pass fictitious $100 bills to make purchases. The men were located and counterfeit $100 bills were found on their persons. A 31-year-old Vietnamese and a 29-yearold Caucasian were arrested at the scene without incident. A robbery occurred around 9:20 p.m. at Subway, 411 East Huntington. A male suspect acted as a lookout while another male suspect entered the business, displayed a handgun, and demanded cash. Fearing for her safety, the employee handed over money from the cash register and the suspects fled the scene. Both suspects were described to be Hispanics between 20-30 years of age. Tuesday, October 26: Between 3:00 p.m. on October 25 and 7:40 a.m. on October 26, an auto burglary occurred in the 400 block of West Lemon. Unknown suspect(s) forced open the car door and stole the victim’s designer purse and wallet. Around 1:10 p.m., a grand theft was reported at Ren Lee Beauty Supply, 411 East Huntington. Employees discovered that a part of an acupuncture kit was stolen, and a review of the surveillance video showed a known female patron committing the theft on October 20 around 11:18 a.m. They contacted the 58-year-old Asian suspect, but she refused to cooperate. 27:

Upon arrival, a 36-year-old male Asian was already detained in the parking lot by the victim and security personnel. Investigation revealed that the suspect wanted a refund for a purchase made at the Powerband kiosk. The vendor/victim advised that all sales were final and only exchanges were allowed. This angered the suspect, so he opened the cash register, took $20 out of the till, and fled on foot. A private person’s arrest was made, and the man was taken into custody. A consent search of his vehicle was conducted and containers filled with marijuana and baggies of methamphetamine were discovered. The suspect was charged with possession of a controlled substance and marijuana, petty theft, and a $10,000 outstanding warrant. Thursday, October 28: A traffic stop was initiated in the 1100 block of West Huntington around 7:47 a.m. for an expired registration. A 25-year-old male Caucasian driver was contacted, and a record check indicated that he had a suspended/revoked license and no proof of insurance. A consent search of the vehicle revealed a baggie containing a white crystalline substance resembling methamphetamine and a glass-smoking pipe. The driver was arrested at the scene and booked at City jail. JC Penney loss prevention personnel advised that they had detained a woman for theft around 7:20 p.m. The suspect concealed several shirts in her purse and then left the store without making payment. A private person’s arrest was made, and a 23-year-old Hispanic was taken into custody for commercial burglary. During the investigation, the suspect indicated that she stole the items for a job interview. Friday, October 29: 11. Two private persons’ arrests were made at Sephora located at Westfield Mall around 4:12 p.m. The 19-year-old female Asians concealed merchandise in their purses and were taken into custody for petty theft.
