The Pasadena City Council’s most recent regular meeting saw an agenda filled with various development-related items. For starters, the city’s latest large-scale development, the Hyatt Place Hotel project, received a final green light. Although work is already underway where the Paseo Colorado Macy’s used to stand, the city still had to solidify the final tract map, which council swiftly approved without opposition. In addition to the sixstory, 179-room Hyatt Place Hotel, the project site

onrovia’s rich history is celebrated every day, but in October there is going to be quite a party at the museum. The Museum will be celebrating the opening of the Museum 25 years ago. The event will take place on Sunday, Oct. 1, with an open house from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Tours of the Museum; and a recognition program at 2 p.m., to highlight the Museum's founding. No doubt Monrovia’s very own Historian, Steve Baker will be on hand to answer your questions about the city’s past. In 1986, three years after the closure of the Monrovia Municipal Plunge, the City of Monrovia celebrated the centennial as an outgrowth of this celebration; a group of residents established The Monrovia Historical Museum Foundation (MHM) and worked with the City to occupy the Municipal Plunge building with plans for an historic museum. The MHM qualified for a SEE PAGE 4

OK, now I’m ready for the fair to go bye-bye. By the end of September, Old Town Monrovia is the longtime friend you take for granted because you know they’ll always be there. But, seriously, though the fair is a bushel of fun for folks, and I do love seeing people have a good time, the fair is a killer for small

business here in Monrovia, retail and restaurants alike. Those of us who have been around for a while try to plan for the down time, but now let’s get on with some activity here in town! A huge part of our problem in Old Town has been our lack of advertising. MOTAB, the city commission that oversees

our business improvement assessment funds, is working on a new logo, a new website and related social media advertising, which is great. But our print advertising – the stuff that visitors to town can pick up here, or see in their own cities, is lacking. SEE PAGE 4

While the Shops at Santa Anita development never came to be, the businesses and property owners that make up the Downtown Arcadia Improvement Association (DAIA) are now working to create that same kind of lively pedestrian-friendly experience in Downtown Arcadia instead. renewed success and energy in Downtown Arcadia back on track. The potential has not been missed by investors, entrepreneurs and downtown property owners. The interest in the Downtown Arcadia business district and cooperation by City staff is unprecedented by anything in recent history and it is just getting started. If you’ve been by the northwest corner of First Avenue and Wheeler recently, you could not miss the construction that has begun on Arcadia’s first mixed-use project near the new Gold Line Metro Station. It has been quite an attention getter. The development is estimated to be finished in late 2018, and will include over 16,000 square-feet of commercial space, 38 residential units, and 110 new parking spaces. We’re very excited to see this type of development coming to the area. It will bring new residents and their friends and family to patronize local businesses, and include exciting new commercial uses on the ground floor of the building. Preliminary discussions are underway on several other similar mixed-use developments in Downtown Arcadia, and we look forward to the continued investment and revitalization these projects are bringing to the area.

In addition to mixed-use development, Downtown Arcadia currently has a new two-story 4,000 squarefoot Art-deco style office building under construction at 130 S. First Avenue. When completed, it will house offices for a local architecture and construction firm. Also of note, in November of last year Mt. Lowe Brewing Company opened Arcadia’s first Microbrewery at 150 E. St. Joseph St. Mt. Lowe’s passion for craft beer and local history has been a great addition to Downtown. In July, Vendome Wine & Spirits opened for business right across the street from the Arcadia Metro Station at 103 E. Santa Clara St. Vendome seeks products from around the world and offers them to the public in their Arcadia shop, and also includes an active bar in their front tasting room. All this new energy and excitement is drawing new customers to the area, to the benefit of both new and longtime businesses in Downtown Arcadia. As Mayor of Arcadia and a Downtown Arcadia Improvement Association Board Member, I will continue working to support and promote the exciting revitalization happening in the area. Great things and times are ahead for Downtown Arcadia.

The City of Arcadia may very well receive the recognition it deserves soon at the 22nd Annual Eddy Awards this year. Since 1996. the Eddy Awards serve to recognize cities in LA County that take great strides in leadership to economically develop business, education, and government. Recently, the City of Arcadia was announced as an Eddy Awards finalist for Most Business-Friendly City of 2017. Arcadia qualified for this nomination in the category of cities with a population under 68,000,

and it is the second consecutive year that the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) has selected Arcadia as a finalist in this category. Arcadia did not win the Eddy Award in 2016, having been overtaken by the work of Pico Rivera. However, as the City of Arcadia has been growing and building upon zoning projects for the expansion of commerce in Downtown Arcadia, it’s no surprise that they were nominated a second time for this prestigious award. Bottom line, we do a decent job promoting Old Town as a whole, but a not-so-good job when it comes to the promotion of individual businesses. That type of promotion is the responsibility of the business owner, but here’s the dilemma: slow business, no advertising dollars -- no advertising dollars, slow business. We need some public input here: what do you all think? At least we’re almost into the season of events, which is a big boost for Old Town. Next week, on Oct. 7th and 8th the hayrides will return to Old Town from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m., and – the same weekend, Saturday and Sunday, “Celebrate the Arts,” sponsored by the Monrovia Association of Fine Arts (MAFA) will be in Library Park (Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 4 p.m.). The featured artist is Michael Herdering (www.mcherdering. com) who chose the theme for the event, “Art Takes Flight.” There will be fine art displays, sales and demonstrations as well as Monrovia’s third ChalkFest. The following weekend, Sunday

Oct. 15th Old Town will host the popular “Taste of Old Town.” If you’ve never been to this event, this year is a must-go – there will be over 50 booths serving tastes of your favorite beverages, alcoholic and non-alcoholic, and every kind of delicious food imaginable. Tickets are available at The Dollmakers’ Kattywompus, Monrovia Community Center and online at www.tastemonrovia.com. Kelly Milliken at Center Stage also has some for sale as do the members of Monrovia Kiwanis, the hosts of the event. If you buy the tickets in advance, they’re cheaper…. Good news: the old 4th Dimension site in the 300 block of S. Myrtle is going to get a face-job, so the frontage is boarded up and the fencing will go up shortly, but it will leave plenty of sidewalk space. I’m still not hearing if there is a tenant for the front retail area. Also, the owners of the building at 50-100 W. Lemon, which also includes the corner facing Myrtle, are still trying to come up with a plan acceptable to the City for development. I’ll keep you posted…

The mixeduse building will eventually house 71 new for-sale residential units. The Hyatt hotel will be located at the northwest corner of Green Street and Los Robles Avenue and will also include 6,000 square feet of ground floor retail space that will front the Paseo’s central pedestrian mall. The construction, which commenced earlier this year, is scheduled for

completion in winter 2019. As part of the final tract map, the developer also dedicated to the city the land necessary to construct a 15-foot-wide sidewalk along Los Robles Avenue capable of accommodating an Americans With Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramp. The city council also approved $314,000 to rehabilitate the interior of Centennial Place, a 144-unit permanent supportive housing facility located at 235 E. Pasadena’s High Point Academy ‘Treats’ Students to Hurricane Relief Awareness

Kindergarten and First Grade celebrate the $3,000 donation amount with Gary Stern Head of School. - Courtesy photo / High Point Academy

Norma RICHMAN Children always clamor for sweet frozen treats, but those goodies taste even sweeter when they help teach youngsters to care for those less fortunate. On Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 12 and 13, High Point Academy’s entire student body came together for two days of lunchtime fundraising as children purchased dollara-piece popsicles to raise money for Harvey and Irma hurricane relief. The cool fundraiser kicked off the new school year with a lesson in compassion for others, as K through 8th graders queued up to drop their contributions into two overflowing buckets of cash. HPA’s first Community Engagement Program project of the year also provided children with an opportunity to learn about matching funds and the power of even the smallest donation. Hundreds of popsicles were sold, and an impressive $1,500 was raised in just two days, which High Point will match. The $3,000 donation will go to One America Appeal, a fund set up by the five living past presidents. The organization guarantees

that one hundred percent of all monies donated will go to victims of the season’s first two mammoth hurricanes. First grader Evelyn Lamb, age 6, was proud to participate. “The popsicles were good because they made money for the people that were in the hurricane.” Eliana Gonzalez, grade 4, went a step further, stating, “The money went to the people in the hurricane to help, because some only had the clothes they were wearing and they had no homes. I think popsicles were a great idea because it’s better than just donating; you get something in return.” Evan Chen, age 9, explained, “The money was for people to help them get food and water.” “It’s a good idea that they used popsicles,” added Francesca Gomez-Novy, 9. “They were selling something kids would like, so more donations came in.” Nathan Demarchi, age 6, noted that the fundraiser “gave the people in the hurricane more money to rebuild their houses.” He happily admitted that “It felt nice to help.” Nice – and sweet, for all involved.

“With Love and a Major Organ” Boston Court’s Last Play for the Season May s. ruiz MayChu@att.net

B

oston Court Performing Arts Center in Pasadena ends its 2017 season with the West Coast premiere of Julia Lederer’s ‘With Love and a Major Organ’, from September 28 through November 5, 2017. Directed by awardwinning co-artistic director, Jessica Kubzansky, ‘With Love and a Major Organ’ is a whimsical, quirky, and wildly original play that dissects physical human interaction in the age of technology. Says Kubzansky, “I love this title and I think it’s deliciously funny. The story is about trying to connect in our ever more virtual world. There’s a character in the play who has been enclosed for years in her own privacy. She’s seeing an online therapist, Google Shrink, who recommends that she see more people so she speeddates online. What’s contrapuntal to this is that she falls

in love with a stranger she meets on the subway. She then gives her actual beating heart to this man and he disappears on her.” “To me one of the most profound ironies of our time

is that we have never been more connected yet we have never felt more isolated,” Kubzansky declares. “There’s an amazing animation that someone made about people running

around looking down on their phones – technology is changing their lives but they’re completely missing out on life around them. Technology is significantly improving our lives while

considerably reducing our ability to connect. Julia’s play is both truly hilarious and powerfully heartbreaking. She’s mining both the absurd lengths to which love will drive us and the deep loneliness that emanates from protecting our frequently bruised and broken hearts. Her text is poetry for the theatre and she pushes metaphor to its most surreal and deeply truthful limits.” Kubzansky and co-artistic director, Michael Michetti, have set a mandate that all their productions be highly theatrical, textually rich, and visually arresting. These qualities are the hallmark of a ‘Boston Court’ play. “We encourage each artist to passionately pursue his own unique voice and vision,” states Kubzansky. “It’s also imperative for me to do work that challenges both the artist and the audience. Because our work is adventurous, it occasionally divides or offends

people but our audience also trusts that they will see artistic excellence and the experience will be unlike what they get elsewhere.” “It’s incredibly important to us to take part in a cultural conversation that reflects the world as it is today. We want to give our audience lots of opportunities to see our play and talk about it. Every Friday we have complimentary wine, sparkling water, and Chex Mix to encourage people to sit in our beautiful lobby and have a dialogue about what they have just seen,” Kubzansky concludes. Boston Court Performing Arts Center was founded in 2003 by philanthropist, Z. Clark Branson, dedicated to new and original work by living artists. Through the theatre’s bold and risky productions and its eclectic and diverse music series, it has made its mark on the city and theatre. It stands today as a stalwart advocate of artistic vision and inventive expression.

Musical Sundays With Coleman at Caltech Music requires no gas, no airfare, and no tedious lines for Security, yet it offers a First Class journey to distant, wondrous places in our hearts and minds.

Music introduces us to new people, new situations, new sounds, new perceptions, new perspectives, and new epiphanies. With each note, each phrase, and each movement, we soar. Where we come to rest is bound solely by our spirit and our imagination. We become like birds, like flocks of larks

on electrical lines that resemble notes on a staff… music is our wings. Middle C is simply middle C, just as F is F, and B-flat is B-flat. It is truly remarkable — indeed, miraculous—that these ordinary notes, in the hands of great composers and performers, transport us from the routines of our lives to

extraordinary places. The Coleman Chamber Music Association has been in the ‘travel business,’ offering wonderful chamber music tours, for quite some time now—since 1904, just one year after the Wright Brothers first flew at Kitty Hawk. We are delighted to invite you to join us for our 2016–2017 season

There is good reason that Sacramento became the California state capitol. Not only did the Gold Rush of 1849 begin a few miles from the

lifestyle

Panning for Traveling Gold in Old Town Sacramento town, but its location at the confluence of the American and Sacramento Rivers made it a great spot for people, supplies and trade to arrive by water. The city began in 1839 when the Mexican govern-

ment granted 48,000 acres of land to pioneer Johann Augustus Sutter and he set up camp near the two rivers. Ten years later, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill, a sawmill owned by Sutter and the region was instantly put on

the map. News of the discovery quickly spread across the globe and fortune hunters came by the thousands from across the world. California became a state in 1850 and Sacramento its capital four years later. To get a better idea of how it all began for the area, a friend and I recently took a trip to Sacramento's Old Town for a couple nights of golden adventure and discovery. Our getaway began at The Delta King Hotel in Old Sacramento. Originally built in 1927 in Glasgow, Scotland and Stockton, California, The Delta King is an authentic 285-ft riverboat that used to make daily river voyages

between San Francisco and Sacramento. The vessel was a rock star until the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Bridge were built and pushed the boat aside in the late 1930s. The ship saw some work as a floating barracks and a troop transporter in WWII, before being towed over the years between Canada and California in the hopes of getting a new life. Then in 1984, after being partially submerged for 15 months in San Francisco Bay, the Delta King was acquired by the Coyne family, given a complete historical renovation and towed to Old Sacramento. Today The Delta King is a beautiful riverboat

hotel with 44 modern guest rooms, two gourmet restaurants, entertainment, two professional theaters, a wine school and exceptional facilities for weddings, banquets, and meetings. It is also on the National Register of Historic Places. When not walking the decks of the Delta King, we were exploring other parts of Old Town. The Magic of Reading Revived: Century Books

Is reading is a dying art? Some statistics would say so. According to a 2015 Pew Research study, one in four Americans never even got around to reading a book. That same year, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences found the average amount of time Americans spend reading had steadily dropped over the last ten years. Fortunately for us, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel—and it’s twinkling in the window of Century Books in Pasadena. Owned by Judith and Steve Marosvolgyi, this charming independent bookstore officially opened in 2012 on New Year’s Day. Twenty Arcadia High Students Named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists Twenty Arcadia High School students were recently distinguished as National Merit Scholarship semifinalists. These skilled seniors join a group that represents less than one percent of high school seniors across the country. Semifinalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program will have an opportunity to compete for nearly 7,500 National Merit Scholarships collectively worth almost $32 million. “Receiving this honor and having the chance to be considered for a scholarship through this program makes me happy beyond words,” said Arcadia High Senior and 2018 National Merit semi-finalist Elyse Yao. “I took a prep course before I took the SAT, but that class just built on the foundation laid by my Arcadia Unified coursework.” Approximately 1.6 million juniors from more than 22,000 high schools vied for entrance into the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT). Scores from this test served as an initial screening

“We are incredibly humbled by the number of our Arcadia High students who make it into this program each year,” said Arcadia Unified School District Superintendent Dr. David Vannasdall. “It’s a testament to the commitment to education our students and teachers make every day and is what makes Arcadia High School one of the top public high

schools in the country.” More than half of the finalists will be awarded a National Merit Scholarship, earning the title “Merit Scholar.” Finalists will be notified in February, and scholarships will be awarded starting in April and concluding in July. Arcadia High School has been distinguished a U.S. News and World Report Gold

Medal School three times, an honor bestowed on less than 3 percent of the more than 19,000 schools in the country. Similarly, Newsweek named Arcadia High on its Top Public High Schools in America list. Arcadia High was also recently identified by Niche.com as being in the top two percent of the best public high schools in California. For the second

Recycle Used Oil & Filters! Do you change your car’s motor oil? Did you know that used motor oil and oil filters are recyclable? Used oil can be re-refined or processed into new motor oil. Currently only 46% of used motor oil is being recycled, which means 20 million gallons may be illegally entering California’s waterways via stormwater systems, posing a great risk to the environment. One gallon of used oil can contaminate a million gallons of drinking water; polluting our waterways and threatening fish and aquatic life. Prevent pollution; recycle used motor oil and filters! The school offers enhanced math, science and arts learning as part of its magnet focus. Arts performance and practice spaces are part of the school’s new gymnasium complex, which opened earlier this year. The addition of the new orchestra program at Washington STEAM means that every Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) middle school will now offer both band and orchestra programs. “Giving more kids access to quality music education

will transform and accelerate learning, not only in school, but in life,” said Felice Mancini, president and CEO of the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation. “All children deserve this gift and we applaud the teachers and school districts that recognize and support their music programs. We will support you!” The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation has partnered with PUSD since 2012. The foundation previously awarded grants to Washington STEAM’s band program, Eliot Arts Magnet and Marshall Fundamental Secondary School. More information can be found at www.mhopus.org.

Resident Responds to Deer Shooting Here we go again with the story about the deer poacher on Gold Hills. For what it is worth, I have been hiking the forest and the foothills for at least 60 years. During this time I have seen many bow hunters. The sad thing is that none of them were hunting legally. They were hunting within City limits, or were on trails or roads. The fact is, if they were hunting legally within the Angeles National Forest they would not be successful. The deer in the forest are fewer and

Have you ever received a call from a headhunter or recruiter out of the blue? Sometimes, they’ll call your work phone and leave a voicemail you weren’t expecting. They’re recruiting for a new position. It’s one you haven’t heard about, but they want to speak to you. You don’t even know how they got your name, or your phone number. The recruiter says, “I have a new position I’m trying to fill. I wanted to reach out to see if you know anyone who might be interested.” It’s always a strange call to receive because it’s such a surprise. If you’re like many people, you may start to run through the list of your friends ‘might be interested. But, here’s the thing. When the headhunter asks if you know someone who might be interested, they’re really asking if you might be interested. It’s a polite way of asking if you would want to be interviewed for the job. They only want to know if you have a friend if you aren’t interested. Once you realize the real question, you’ll probably try to decide which response you want to give. You may initially

The Arcadia High School Boys Water Polo team is off to a hot start. After finishing last season with a 12-6

loss to Diamond Bar High School in the CIF Southern Section Division 6 Quarterfinals, the Apaches looked to better their 2016 results in 2017. In late August, they began their season by handily defeating Monrovia in the season opener, and the wins kept coming. After starting the season with three consecutive wins, Arcadia dropped a game to Temple City High School, but then got back on track with seven consecutive wins, including an undefeated showing in the Western Tournament, beating Savanna, Cleveland Charter, Chino,

and Orange Lutheran JV. This past weekend, the Apaches played in the Bull Run Tournament against a stacked field. In the first game, the Apaches fell to Glendora, and things would not get easier. Later in the afternoon on Friday, the Apaches fell once again, this time losing to Alemany. On Saturday, things went from bad to worse. The Apaches lost two more games, falling 12-3 to Sage Hill, and then losing a heartbreaker 12-11 to Brentwood. The Apaches were able to close out the tournament with a win in SEE NEXT PAGE

Monrovia Football Searches for Arizona Saints Prove Themselves Against La Salle Football Answers Following Rough Season Spencer Stueve,

Spencer Stueve,

sports@beaconmedianews.com

sports@beaconmedianews.com

The Monrovia Wildcats Varsity football team has struggled greatly so far in 2017. In Head Coach Jerry Chou’s second season at Monrovia High School, the Wildcats have lost in a number of ways. In their first game on Aug. 25, the offense struggled greatly, scoring only eight points in a loss to Burbank. One week later, the offense shined, but the defense faltered, giving up 42 in a loss to La Salle. After only losing by two points in week two, the Wildcats were twice beaten handily, losing by 29 to Don Lugo and 21 to Whitter. Last Friday, the Wildcats took on Damien High School. The Spartans entered the game with a strong 3-1 record and left the stadium with a fourth win under their belt. Monrovia again struggled to play a complete game, and for the third week

Coach Russell Gordon and the La Salle Lancers entered last Friday’s game against the Notre Dame Prep Saints from Scottsdale, Arizona as decided underdogs. The Saints came in with a 4-0 record and a top 10 ranking in the state of Arizona, according to Maxpreps. The Lancers were just 2-2, though their victory at Muir one week earlier was quite impressive. The Saints are led on offense by Kylen Weisser, a pro style Quarterback with - Courtesy photo / Twitter @LSFootball626 an offer from the University of Idaho and interest Next up for the Lancers is the first league from several other schools. Weisser and the rest of the Saint offense matchup of the year on Friday against shined last game. At halftime, the score was Salesian. The game will be held at La Salle just 14-3 with Notre Dame on top, but the High School, where the Lancers will look scoring opened up in the 2nd half, and the to improve on their 3rd place finish in the Angelus League in 2016. in a row, they were beaten badly. The final score was 49-7 Damien. For Monrovia, many might think they are in a position that is uncommon to them. In recent years, Monrovia has been a strong program. Former Coach Ryan Maddox coached the Wildcats for six seasons,

winning three CIF Championships before departing in 2014. However, recently, the Wildcats have seen early struggles quickly turn into success. Just last season, Monrovia started 0-3, but won six of their next seven to make the playoffs. Coach Chou is looking for a similar turnaround this season.

their final game, beating Colony in a high scorer, 18-14. Despite the disappointing showing at the Bull Run Tournament, there is reason for optimism for Janice Clark and the Apaches. The Varsity squad has a strong mix of experienced players, with six

seniors, as well as youth that will mature as the season progresses. There are five juniors and five sophomores on the roster. The next match up for the Apaches comes on Thursday, September 26 against the Glendale High School Dynamiters. Arcadia beat Glendale 10-0 in their lone meeting last season.
