ENDURING HEROES MEMORIAL COMMEMORATES LOCAL WARRIORS by GUS HERRERA gherrera@beaconmedianews.com
F
or those who never served in the military or don’t necessarily have any direct ties to the armed services, the Memorial Day holiday may just seem like a much-needed three-day weekend to kick off the summer. But America’s day of remembrance for those who wrote a blank check to serve the country they loved is much more than a day to barbecue with friends and family. Although the beaches of Normandy, jungles of Vietnam, and mountains of Afghanistan may seem distant to many, both in time and on the map, this year’s Memorial Day struck very close to home, especially for 11 local Gold Star families. On Monday afternoon, Pasadena unveiled a new memorial at the corner of Colorado Street and Orange Grove Boulevard, a picturesque patch of green grass otherwise known as Defender’s Park. Thefts in Sierra Madre Continue In addition to a recent rash of robberies from unlocked cars, Sierra Madre PD is now looking into package thefts from doorways. A resident in the 100 block of E. Grandview reported a theft of package from their front porch. UPS advised the resident that on 5/24/17 at approximately 12:00 p.m., a package was delivered to the home on 5/23/17. While police have no suspects yet, detectives in
Arcadia have been highly successful in this area of crime fighting with the use of GPS. A decoy package is placed strategically ( albeit with a tracer GPS signal) at a residence. Once the package is removed, police are able to locate the stolen item often in the hands of those responsible for multiple area thefts. No word yet on whether Sierra Madre will institute such a plan. The case was forwarded to SMPD Detectives.
