L.A. COUNTY BANS TELEVISIONS AT RESTAURANTS AHEAD OF SUPER BOWL SUNDAY Sports fans and restaurants agitated; health officials worry Super Bowl could be next super spreader event

ven though the outdoor dining ban and regional stay-at-home order are now lifted, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has put numerous conditions on eateries that have boggled some who like to eat and watch a game or two at a favorite restaurant. The latest health order directs restaurants to pull the plug on their televisions – just in time for the Super Bowl. “Televisions or any other screens that are used to broadcast programming or other entertainment must be removed from the area or turned off,” it stipulates. “We know that Super Bowl Sunday is coming up, and we can’t repeat the mistakes of the past,” Barbara Ferrer, director of the county’s public health department, said last Wednesday. “It will be tragic if the Super Bowl becomes a super-spreader of coronavirus.” The county’s revised order reinstated previous restrictions on outdoor dining: requiring servers to wear masks and face shields, limiting tables to no more than six people from the same household and requiring tables to be at least 8 feet apart. The maximums number of customers in outdoor dining areas is “determined by the total number of seats avail-
able after tables are spaced at least 8 feet apart from any other table and with a maximum of six (6) seats at each table.” Restaurants are also encouraged to collect contact information from customers in case there’s a future need to reach out in contact-tracing efforts. One local restauranteur, Joey Stevens who owns Copper Still Grill in Monrovia, was about to set up his outdoor dining again when the news came in late Friday. “I’m amazed … It doesn’t make any sense as now people will be forced into homes to watch the Super Bowl which obviously could contribute to more COVID-19 transmissions.,” Stevens said. “The county health department’s leader, Barbara Ferrer, is not a medical doctor and I feel she’s totally unqualified for the job.” Ferrer received her Ph.D. in social welfare from Brandeis University, a Master of Arts in public health from Boston University, a Master of Arts in education from the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and a Bachelor of Arts in community studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Ferrer’s compensation is $585,000. By dining outside with tables carefully spaced apart, Stevens believes that watching the game outdoors is far safer than being cramped in someone’s living room for the big game. “This latest ban on TV’s is an added blow to the already battered and beleaguered restaurant

business. We’re barely surviving,” Stevens emphatically said. L.A. County Health Officer Dr. Muntu Davis said during a press briefing Friday that it’s common for fans to be “yelling, shouting, screaming during the excitement of a game.” This would further spread the virus through droplets of saliva and particles. “There is no such thing as no risk at a restaurant or any other setting where people from different households are together,” he said. Paul Little, CEO of Pasadena Chamber of Commerce, thinks the ban on televisions during outdoor
dining is counterproductive. “Honestly, I think it will have the opposite effect the experts desire. Rather than have a socially distanced outdoor space to watch the game from, people will have to watch it indoors,” he said. “I am concerned that they will also be inviting friends and family members from outside their households to join them and we will see another spike in cases like that we experienced after the Lakers and Dodgers won their championship games.” Despite opposition and resistance from some, “there is increasing evidence that California’s latest stay-athome order, including a ban
on outdoor dining, worked to turn around a deadly surge of the coronavirus,” according to Monday’s Los Angeles Times. “In Los Angeles County, the stay-at-home orders and a ban on outdoor dining were followed by a drop in the transmission rate — a measure known as “R” that reflects how many people a sick person on average infects — from 1.2 before the orders to 0.85 by early January. Anything above 1.0 means an outbreak will grow exponentially,” write Soumya Karlamangla and Rong-Gong Lin II. “Scientists say that they can’t tease out which part
of the order was most effective in turning the tide, but several leading public health experts interviewed by The Times agreed that the outdoor dining ban probably played a key role,” the L.A. Times concluded. COVID-19 concerns are tackling in-person Super Bowl party plans this year, according to a new healthinsurance.com national survey of 1,000 U.S. adults. Half of the respondents said they plan to spend the big game with just their immediate household this year. Social distancing is spurring virtual Super Bowl parties, which 13% of those surveyed said they will be attending.

California Partners with Biden Administration to Open Community Vaccination Site in L.A. California Governor Gavin Newsom and the Biden-Harris Administration announced Wednesday a pilot project to establish two new community vaccination sites, one in Los Angeles and another in Oakland. These pilot sites, which will be based at the OaklandAlameda Coliseum and California State University, Los Angeles, are part of the effort to establish 100 vaccination sites nationwide in the federal administration’s first 100 days. The sites will be co-run by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the State of California through the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES). “In the fight against COVID-19, partnership is key, especially when it comes to reaching Californians in underserved areas,” Newsom said. “These new sites will help us get available supply
to some of the California communities most in need. I thank the Biden Administration for standing with us as we continue our efforts to safely, swiftly and equitably vaccinate all Californians.” FEMA will provide resources and federal staffing support to establish these new community vaccination centers as well as operational support. Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Hilda Solis welcomed the news. “Our county and in particular our Latinx residents have been absolutely devastated by COVID-19,” Solis said in a statement. “Establishing this large scale federal-state community vaccination center on the Cal State LA campus, in the heart of Los Angeles County and in a hard-hit community, is a welcome signal that we are ramping up at the federal,

state and local level with the practical, boots-on-theground solutions we need to put an end to this deadly pandemic.”
The new site will increase capacity by thousands of vaccinations a day, she said. Each of these new sites will be paired with two

mobile vaccination clinics which can be deployed to multiple locations. “We are also appreciative for the two mobile units that will be deployed — which can integrate with our public health teams to reach vulnerable residents throughout the county,” Solis said. Preparations and buildout of these two locations are now underway and the sites are expected to be open to eligible members of the public beginning Feb. 16. Registration for vaccine appointments at these two sites will be available
through the state’s MyTurn scheduling system in the coming days. To facilitate access for residents who depend on public transportation, Solis on Tuesday will ask the Board of Supervisors to approve a plan “to partner with transit agencies and also use the county’s own bus system.” The State of California is coordinating with FEMA to ensure the vaccine doses used at these sites will not decrease the available supply for other sites in the hosting counties.

t’s been 13 months since the first signs of coronavirus in the United States were reported. To date, there have been more than 25.45 million cases of infection and over 425,000 deaths, with January being the pandemic’s deadliest month. While the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are now available, getting most of the population vaccinated is still several months ahead. Students have been learning remotely since last spring; teachers have never been busier preparing for the day’s lessons and trying to engage distracted learners during virtual class; and parents are struggling to keep their job and helping their young kids keep up with schoolwork all at once. There are several tutoring services available if you or your children require help with schoolwork. A company called Mundo Academy provides excellent tutoring services in the Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley area. Likewise, there are free tutoring services and learning platforms to help children during the coronavirus pandemic. Two of these organizations include Sailors Learning and Wave Learning Festival. If you’re exhausted, as most of us are at this time, please reach out for assistance. The C.D.C. has put together a resource kit for parents, divided by age group, to help them ensure their children’s well-being. The site also has links to other resources that cover various concerns. Another C.D.C. webpage is dedicated to helping parents manage stress during the coronavirus pandemic. Meanwhile, COVID-19 has resulted in changes to the college application process. The biggest upheaval may be in the elimination altogether of standardized testing. The College Board had to cancel multiple rounds of testing last year, which meant a significant revenue loss. But even before the pandemic, most universities were no longer requiring SAT and ACT scores
as part of college applications; the coronavirus merely hastened the inevitable. FRESHMAN Your children are well into the second semester of ninth grade and are now fully engaged in the academic life at their school. With grades as the only benchmark for an applicant’s merit for acceptance, the student’s GPA is the single most important component of their college application. If their first semester marks need improvement, now is the time to turn things around. Admissions officers will not expect your children to have extra-curricular activities during the coronavirus pandemic. However, they will be interested to know how students spent their time outside of remote learning. Encourage your children to find virtual volunteer work or earn online certificates to put on their curriculum vitae. SOPHOMORE Your children need to

really understand and learn the courses they’re taking so that the final grades on their transcript are the best they could earn. The schools they will be applying to will only see the grades in their three years in high school. If their first semester grades weren’t stellar, they need to improve this semester. They need to ‘meet’ with their grade class dean to make sure their grades and courses are on the right
track for graduation. While the SAT and ACT are no longer required by universities, AP scores are still being used as a gauge of college-readiness and your children should register for the tests (www. collegeboard.com; www.act. org). last complete year that college admissions officers will be looking at when your children send their application. They need to maintain their good grades and the pursuits that replaced their extra-curricular activities. If they had good study habits back in ninth grade and have established a routine, they shouldn’t be feeling overwhelmed right now. You and your children should do a virtual college tour. They might also want to make a phone call or have a Zoom chat with a current student to learn more about the school. More often than not, current college students and alums are happy to talk about their alma mater. SENIOR Your children should not take for granted that they are all done with schoolwork because they have sent in their college application. Don’t let them succumb to ‘senioritis’ – they still have to submit their final transcript. Universities can rescind their acceptance if admissions officers see a
drastic drop in the student’s grades. In fact, a single lower mark can trigger some questions. Moreover, third-quarter grades are critical in case they are waitlisted. And, in the unfortunate event they realize the school they were accepted to isn’t the right fit for them, senior-year grades will be crucial if they decide to apply for a transfer. Additionally, seniors need to be mindful of their social activities. Schools are techsavvy – they check social media profiles of students they have accepted and can rescind that offer if they find unacceptable behavior. Your children should be mindful of what may end up online. If your children have received new awards or commendations or have accomplished something significant since they sent in their college application, they should email this important update to the admissions officer or the area representative of the school they applied to. Your children should confirm with the colleges to make sure they have all the
documents they require. They should continue applying for scholarships (www.scholarships.com; www.collegexpress.com; www.scholarships360.org, www.fastweb. com, www.studentaid.ed.gov, www.affordablecollegesonline.org/graduating-debtfree) and getting their FAFSA (www.fafsa.ed.gov) ready for submission. Remind your children to be careful how they share their good news as their friends might be getting some bad news at the same time. If they have been accepted to their ‘safety school’ but aren’t planning on attending it, they should resist the urge to boast about it as it might be someone else’s ‘dream school.’ Most of all, your children need to be patient – the answer will eventually arrive, and nothing can hurry it up. Colleges notify at different times and in different ways. They shouldn’t read into the timing of the decision letters; their friends getting good news early doesn’t necessarily mean a bad outcome for them.

ARCADIA Jan. 24 At 8:11 a.m., an officer noticed one of the windows to Lohas Fresh Mart, located at 1304 S. Baldwin Ave., had been damaged. The officer concluded an unidentified suspect had thrown a rock through the window, but it doesn’t appear as though they entered the business. The investigation is pending a review of any available surveillance footage. At 9:58 a.m., an officer took a report of a mail theft incident that occurred in the 200 block of Arbolada Drive. The victim reported her mailbox was damaged and mail had gone missing. There are no investigative leads as of the date of this report. At 3:45 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 300 block of Fairview Avenue regarding a burglary report. Surveillance footage revealed the victim’s patio furniture had been moved and the rear window was smashed. After viewing the video, it does not appear the suspects entered the home. The suspects are described as two suspects seen wearing hooded sweatshirts and pants. Jan. 25 At 9:39 a.m., an officer responded to a residence under construction in the 2100 block of Canyon Road regarding two suspicious subjects seen entering the construction site. Officers located the suspects and determined they were not authorized to be at the location. The suspects, a 48-year-old male from Azusa and a 39-year-old female from Monrovia, were arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. Jan. 26 At 8:27 a.m., an officer responded to the 1400 block of Green Oaks Drive regarding a stolen vehicle report. The victim left his unlocked vehicle parked in the driveway with the keys inside. Surveillance footage captured a male suspect attempting to open the rear door by manipulating the lock with a pick. The suspect was unsuccessful and fled empty-handed. He is described as a black male seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, dark colored cargo pants, black shoes, and seen carrying a black backpack. At 8:57 p.m., an officer responded to the 00 block of North Santa Anita Avenue regarding a vehicle burglary report. The officer determined an unknown suspect tampered with the victim’s door lock and ultimately fled with paperwork and miscellaneous toys. The incident was not captured by surveillance cameras. Jan. 27 At 8:24 a.m., an officer responded to the 1400 block of San Carlos Road regarding a theft from vehicle report. An investigation revealed the victim left her wallet and passport in an unlocked vehicle. The victim later discovered her stolen credit cards had been used without her permission. The investigation is ongoing.
MONROVIA Jan. 21 At 2:40 a.m., an assault incident was reported at a hotel in the 900 block of West Huntington. Hotel security responded to a room on a noise complaint and found two male subjects involved in an argument. One of the subjects asked the other to leave. The security guard escorted the subject outside, where they became involved in a physical fight. Officers responded, but the suspect had already fled the area. This investigation is continuing.

This investigation is continuing. At 8:42 p.m., officers responded to the 300 block of Elfwood regarding a male subject seen in a resident’s backyard. When the resident yelled at the subject, he fled in a vehicle. Officers located the vehicle in the 800 block of Norumbega and conducted a traffic stop. The male driver told officers he had done work on the property eight months prior and he was looking to get more work. The resident advised the officers that he did know the subject and there was no reason for him to have been at the residence. He authorized a “No Trespass Form.” The subject was also found to be in possession of various drug paraphernalia. He was arrested. At 9:13 p.m., officers were extra patrolling the 200 block of East Pomona and saw a vehicle fail to stop at a stop sign. A traffic stop was conducted, and the investigation revealed the female driver was in possession of burglary tools and fraudulent documents. The driver was arrested. Jan. 22 At 3:04 a.m., California Highway Patrol notified Monrovia Police Department that they were in a pursuit on Foothill and Myrtle, traveling eastbound. Officers assisted CHP with a traffic stop related to the pursuit at the intersection of Mountain and Central. Both suspects were arrested by CHP. Jan. 23

Second Case of UK Coronavirus Variant Found in L.A. County Four additional cases of MIS-C identified
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health confirmed the second case of COVID-19 variant B.1.1.7, the same variant discovered in the United Kingdom, on Saturday. The specimen, submitted by a clinical facility, was sequenced as part of routine surveillance by the Los Angeles County Public Health Laboratory. Public Health announced the first confirmed case of COVID-19 variant B.1.1.7 on Jan. 16. Public health officials believe B.1.1.7 and other variants are already spreading in the county and continue to test samples. The presence of the B.1.1.7 variant in the county means “virus transmission can happen more easily, and residents and businesses must more diligently implement and follow all of the personal protective actions and safety measures put in place to prevent additional cases, hospitalizations, and deaths,” according to the health department. Michael Osterholm, an infectious disease expert who advised Joe Biden’s transition team on COVID-19, told NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday morning that the U.K. variant could become the dominant strain in the U.S. and cause a new wave of cases. “The surge that is likely to occur with this new variant from England is going to happen in the next six to 14 weeks,” Osterholm said. “That hurricane is coming,” he warned. Osterholm’s warning
echoes those from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention which last month made public sampling data indicating that B.1.1.7 “has the potential to increase the U.S. pandemic trajectory in the coming months,” and that it could become “the predominant variant in March.” On Jan. 22 British Prime Minister Boris Johnson publicly warned that the variant may be 30% more deadly, though more evidence is still needed. Sir Patrick Vallance, the U.K. government’s chief scientific advisor, stressed that “there's a lot of uncertainty around these numbers and we need more work to get a precise handle on it, but it obviously is a concern that this has an increase in mortality as well as an increase in transmissibility." As parts of California, including L.A. County, relaxed restrictions and resumed outdoor dining, Osterholm also cautioned Americans that “As fast as we're opening restaurants, we're likely to be closing them in the near term." L.A. County officials also stress vigilance and adherence to public health guidelines despite declining case and hospitalization rates, and the loosening of restrictions. “Although some restrictions were just lifted in our county, we are still in a very dangerous period in terms of cases, hospitalizations and deaths,” Barbara Ferrer, director of Public Health said in a statement. “Because
some sectors have re-opened, it doesn’t mean that the risk for community transmission has gone away; it hasn’t, and each of us needs to make very careful choices about what we do and how we do it. This virus is strong, and we are now concerned about variants and what these will mean in our region." Four additional cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) were also reported by L.A. County Public Health. This brings the total cases of MIS-C in L.A. County to 66 children including one death. All 66 children with MIS-C in L.A. County were hospitalized and 44% of the children were treated in the I.C.U. Of the children with MIS-C, 32% were younger than 5 years old, 38% were between the ages of 5 and 11 years old, and 30% were between the ages of 12 and 20 years old. Latino/ Latinx children account for nearly 74% of the reported cases. MIS-C is an inflammatory condition associated with COVID-19, and symptoms include fever that does not go away and inflamed body parts, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes, or gastrointestinal organs. On Sunday, Public Health confirmed 124 new deaths and 5,925 new cases of COVID-19. Saturday's daily test positivity rate was 9.9%, down 15% compared to the previous Saturday. There were 5,328 people with COVID-19 hospitalized, and 27% of them in the I.C.U.

Motor Oil and Filter Recycling Program Can Make L.A. County Greener Beginning a New Year marks a fresh start for Californians. Some resolutions are personal while other goals are communal. A popular resolution is to reduce California’s environmental impact as well as one’s own “carbon footprint.” There are several ways Californians can achieve this goal including recycling, composting and reducing waste. Recycling is one way to help protect the environment. Many Californians know they can recycle glass, plastic and aluminum but one reusable item that is often overlooked is used motor oil. According to the American Petrolum Institute, used motor oil can be reprocessed and used in furnaces for heat or in power plants to generate electricity for homes, schools and businesses. Properly store used motor oil until you are able to recycle it. Pour it into
a clean container with a tight lid or purchase containers designed to store used motor oil. Make sure the oil does not get mixed up with any other liquid, including water. Recycle the used oil filter by placing it in a clean, leak-proof container (after draining it) such as a zippertype plastic bag or an old coffee can. A man was killed Friday in Monrovia in an apparent gang-related shooting, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) said in a news release. At 5 p.m. Friday, Monrovia Police units responded to the 100 block of Los Angeles Street. Upon arriving officers discovered a man suffering from several gunshot wounds in front of a residence. Monrovia officers
administered first aid until the arrival of Monrovia Fire Department at which time the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. There is no suspect or suspect vehicle description or any additional information available at this time. LASD homicide investigators are assisting the Monrovia Police Department. L.A. County Surpasses 17K COVID-19 Deaths Family Asks for Help Finding Man Los Angeles County surpassed a total of 17,057 COVID-19 deaths on Tuesday. The county has seen more than 7,000 new COVID-19 deaths in a little over a month — on Dec. 30, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported 10,000 COVID-19 deaths. By comparison, deaths between February and October totaled 7,000. On Tuesday, Public Health confirmed 205 new deaths and 3,763 cases of COVID-19. “More than 72% of all our COVID-19 deaths occurred in people 65 years old or older,” said Barbara Ferrer, director of Public Health. “Given the high mortality rates among older individuals, please do not make appointments for vaccinations if it is not your turn. Help us make sure that our most vulnerable elderly residents are prioritized for the limited available vaccine." The number of daily new cases continues to decline but health officials caution that the number of new cases remains substantially higher

and issue citations for businesses out of compliance. During Public Health's recent business compliance checks, “inspectors noted the many newly reopened restaurants were not in compliance with employee face-covering and shelter structure requirements,” officials said in a statement. From Jan. 24–27, a total of 48 citations were issued to businesses including restaurants, gyms, personal care salons, hair salons/ barbershops, and shopping malls for noncompliance with public health orders. Since the end of August, a total of 844 citations have been issued.

re you as happy as I am that our Old Town is [almost] back to its bustling old self? Outdoor dining opened again on Friday, Jan. 29, and while not all Old Town restaurants chose to reopen, most welcomed back their customers with open arms (figuratively speaking, that is). As the night(s) wore on, some had to unplug their phones because the demand was too great. While most of us are thrilled to have our restaurants open, I know some are not. Let us review some of the new guidelines so that we can all do our part to keep the Karen’s at bay. Believe it or not, they are a real thing. They call the health department weekly and often daily to complain about anything they perceive as a violation of COVID-19 protocol. All tables must be 8 feet apart (no longer 6 feet), measured table edge to table edge. No table shall have more than six people. All six people must be from the same household. No table shall be sat until the entire party has
arrived and they will be sat all at once. Masks must be worn when walking through the restaurant and when not eating or drinking. Please offer your cell phone number to the hostess so they can text you when your table is ready. Congregating in front of the restaurant and impeding other pedestrians to pass while maintaining social distancing is highly discouraged. I guarantee that complaints will be made for this item. Let us all continue to support local business by following the rules. Some want to “Fight the power!” and rebel against the establishment. While there might be some merit to that, please remember that the restaurant will have to pay the hefty fine, not you. Following the guidelines will ensure that our restaurants stay open. That is the best support we can give them. Please be sure to take everything I have said with a grain of salt, or in this case, a pound as I am not sure there is any rhyme or reason to the opening and closing of businesses. The “science” is flawed in my humble opinion. Now, to the restaurant(s) that are not following the rules: Don’t be THAT kid; the one that
makes the entire class stay after school because of your bad choices. By not enforcing social distancing and/or mask wearing, you are jeopardizing not only your ability to remain open, but that of every other restaurant in town. By allowing a bar/ nightclub atmosphere, you are basically giving other restaurants the middle finger, with your entitled behavior. A $500 fine might not be a big deal when you are raking in thousands, but is the price worth the cost? Be good and play nice. Thank you to the City of Monrovia for continuing to close off the 400 block of Myrtle Avenue for additional outdoor dining. Moving forward, the street closure will be in effect on Fridays and Saturdays, indefinitely. Thank you to our local restaurant owners and staff for your valiant efforts. Thank you to local businesses that support the street closure, in lieu of parking spaces. Thank you, in advance, to the people that are not ready to venture out. By ordering takeout you are still supporting our local businesses. If you have any issues, complaints or praise, please deliver that feedback directly to the business owner or management.

UC Santa Barbara student helps send more than 90,000 handwritten letters to elders isolated by COVID-19 We’ve all gotten a taste of what it feels like to be socially isolated during the pandemic. No one deserves to feel alone. UC Santa Barbara biology major and Arcadia native Eileen Chen is changing that. Chen is a community outreach coordinator for the nonprofit Love for Our Elders, where she prepares for Letter to an Elder Day on Feb. 26, a national day designed to encourage writing to elders isolated by COVID-19 through its Letters of Love program, which lets you write an anonymous, handwritten card to brighten an older adult’s day. “I think a lot of elders are feeling isolated, especially during this pandemic,” Chen said. “It’s so important to remind them that there are so many people out there that care about them.” And that is just what she has been doing. In 2020, Love for Our Elders sent 90,333 letters of love to 952 senior facilities across seven coun-

tries: Australia, Canada, England, India, Ireland, Malawi, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States. Love for Our Elders hopes to collect 10,000 letters in time for Letter to an Elder Day. COVID-19 Hospitalizations in L.A. County Are Declining, Officials Urge Vigilance The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health confirmed 85 new deaths and 4,223 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday. The seven-day average number of daily cases peaked on Jan. 8 with more than 15,000 cases. As of Jan. 27, the seven-day average of new cases decreased 67% to 5,093. There are 5,398 people with COVID-19 currently hospitalized, 27% in the ICU. Daily hospitalizations decreased 30% from the peak of 8,000 daily hospitalizations in early-January. This is still significantly higher than pre-surge daily hospitalizations. Before the surge,
between mid-September and late-October, the daily number of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 was under 800 people. Residents over 80 years old have consistently experienced the highest rates of hospitalization among all age groups in L.A. County followed by residents 65 to 79 years old, and residents 50 to 64 years old. Recent data indicates obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes are the most common underlying health conditions among people hospitalized with COVID19. Many people have multiple underlying health conditions.
“We are all still living through the nightmare of this surge; last week, on average, 217 people died each day from COVID-19, and two days last week, we reported that more than 300 people died each day,” Barbara Ferrer, director of Public Health, said in a statement. As the virus remains widespread, health officials cautioned against complacency and gatherings like the ones that, in part, fueled the winter surge. “Now is the time to remain super vigilant against this deadly virus and continue to stay home as much as possible. Please
stay home on Super Bowl Sunday,” implored Ferrer. “For the moment, we are headed in a positive direction in bringing our cases down — the last thing we need right now are superspreader events that set us back and potentially could lead to more cases, serious illness and tragic deaths." On the vaccine front, officials say L.A. County has “administered more doses of vaccine and have vaccinated a higher percentage of our population to date than any other large county or large city in the U.S.” As of Jan. 25, the cumulative COVID-19 vaccine doses received in L.A. County
were nearly 1 million and by the end of that week, 80% or nearly 800,000 doses had been administered. Last week, the county received just 146,000 doses and a large percentage were reserved for second doses. More than 85,000 appointments have been reserved for second dose vaccine administration at county sites through Feb. 19. People who were vaccinated at one of the five large capacity county sites or one of the smaller countyoperated community sites are receiving emails notifying them of the date and place for their second dose appointment.

Pasadena Municipal Code, Title 2, Article 3, Chapter 2.45, Section 2.45.050 – Vacation of district appointments by newly elected councilmember is amended as follows: “2.45.050 - Vacation of appointments by newly elected councilmember or Mayor. A. A newly elected councilmember or Mayor may vacate any or all seats on advisory boards, commissions and committees created by the council, provided that the councilmember or Mayor announces an intention to vacate those seats within 90 calendar days of being sworn in to serve on the city council or as Mayor. B. For purposes of this section, a “seat” shall mean a seat on an advisory board, commission or committee for which the councilmember from the district, or Mayor, or Mayor as nominating authority on behalf of the Council, has the power of nomination. C. The councilmember’s or Mayor’s decision to vacate any or all seats must be made within the 90 calendar day period, though a decision on each individual seat need not be made at the same time. D. An incumbent board member, commissioner or committee member shall continue to serve until a replacement has been ratified by the city council and sworn in by the city clerk. E.
