2020: A TUMULTUOUS AND DEFINING YEAR Terry MILLER tmiller@beaconmedianews.com

020 was quite a year — truly an understatement, if ever there was one. What started out as clearly focused as the year’s digits imply, rapidly unfolded to be extremely foggy, out of focus and horrendous beyond our wildest imagination. Coronavirus crept upon our planet rapidly early in the year but, regrettably, the now lame-duck administration did very little initially to acknowledge the potential devastation this outbreak would ultimately produce both at home and globally. Staggering in numbers and impact on all our lives, COVID-19 was determined to permeate every aspect of our lives, essentially making us prisoners in our own homes. Children were forced to learn new skills and participate in “distance learning,” which was indeed a challenge for educators too. Teachers organized car parades to show their affection for the pupils unable to attend in-person classes. Supplies were rationed — not as bad as in World War II but nonetheless, hell hath no fury like a city without toilet paper. Supermarket shelves were suddenly void of essentials in the spring, causing long lines, altered hours and the like. Most of us have grown accustomed to wearing face masks outside, carrying hand sanitizer everywhere we go and maintaining

6 feet of distance from others. We adopted new words and phrases into our daily lexicon like “social distancing,” “quarantine,” “epidemiologists,” “asymptomatic,” “antibody,” and Merriam-Webster’s 2020 Word of the Year “pandemic.” In between all this, there were multiple protests and some riots in response to the police killing of George Floyd in May, paradoxically over an alleged passing of a counterfeit $20 bill at a Minneapolis, Minn. store. A white police officer named Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd's neck, for a period initially reported to be 8 minutes and 46 seconds, killing him. Large and small cities around the world exploded with intense feelings of frustration, heartbreak, anger and indignation over police violence and racism. In some major cities, peaceful protests turned violent and some saw clashes between protestors and white supremacist groups. Meanwhile, a rather important election was unfolding in a country more divided than ever before. Politicians spent a fortune to tell you their plans for the future, conspiracy theories abounded (at times pushed by politicians themselves), and many added fuel to the already rapidly spreading and divisive fire by saying your vote would not count if you mailed it in. Baseless voter fraud claims were echoed by rightwing media — so much so that protests erupted outside ballot counting locations —

and the Trump campaign filed countless lawsuits in a fruitless attempt to overturn the election that saw former Vice President Joe Biden win the election with 306 electoral votes. Kamala Harris, President-elect Biden’s runningmate, became the first Black woman vice president in the history of the nation. The summer was the hottest on record in the Northern Hemisphere which led to fires across the West. California saw fires that destroyed millions of acres of wildland and structures galore. Locally, the Bobcat Fire was one of the biggest in the San Gabriel Valley’s history. As of Dec. 28, 9,639 fires have burned 4,177,856 acres, more than 4% of the state's roughly 100 million acres of land, making 2020 the largest wildfire season recorded in California's modern history (according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.) A staggering and devastating number of lives lost due to the coronavirus, civil unrest, a presidential election, jobs and homes lost, and now a suspected Russian hacking into the U.S. government made 2020 feel like the worst of times. But it wasn’t all bad. Among the pain we saw the resiliency of the human spirit in the faces of health care workers pulling 16-hour shifts, in the smiles of teachers cheering on graduates in family cars, in the generosity of volunteers at food pantries, in the voices of protestors

calling and working for a better tomorrow, in eyes of everyday people wearing face masks to protect one another.

Thank goodness there is light at the end of this extremely long tunnel. The two makers of a COVID-19 vaccine have rolled out

millions of doses. The jabs (vaccinations) have started. Perhaps, soon, we may be able to form a new and better “normal.”

5 Financial Resolutions to Make in The New Year For many of us, the new year means a fresh start and the chance to set new goals. For example, if you invest $200 per paycheck into your workplace retirement plan, and then receive a 3% raise, consider increasing your retirement plan contribution to $206 (equal to 3%). Making that a regular habit can help you achieve your goals more quickly. 4. Make sure you are set for emergencies A rainy-day fund is

foundational to your financial plan. In times when you face an increased risk of an interruption to your income (like in today’s more economically challenged environment), it takes on added importance. You want at least three to six months of expenses covered by your emergency fund. If you are short of that, make a priority of adding to it. 5. Explore your borrowing options If you are paying a mortgage, car loan, student debt or credit card balances, consider more cost-effective ways to manage your debt. Finding ways to refinance debt at a lower interest rate is one consideration. Another is to focus on paying off the most expensive debt more quickly. Check your credit score to determine how it might impact your financing options. Gaining more control over debt is an important way to improve your financial standing over

the next year. Focus on fundamentals Good intentions are in ample supply at this time of year. The key to making meaningful changes is to focus on the fundamental aspects of your financial life and follow through on the plans you make. CVS and Walgreens Now Offering COVID-19 Vaccines to California Long-Term Care Facilities Governor Gavin Newsom announced Monday that California has opted in to the federal COVID-19 Pharmacy Partnership. At no cost to the state or local government, CVS and Walgreens will administer the Pfizer vaccine to residents and staff in long-term care facilities. CVS and Walgreens started with nursing homes on Monday, which will take an estimated three to four weeks, and then vaccinate staff and residents in assisted living, residential care and other long-term care facilities. “Vaccinating those most vulnerable among us is critical to fighting this virus,” Newsom in a statement. “By leveraging CVS and Walgreens resources, we can effectively deploy vaccines to residents and staff at our long-term care facilities, which are at higher risk of COVID transmission — and do it at no cost to the state or local government.” The program will enable CVS and Walgreens pharmacy staff to administer

the vaccine by going directly to care facilities. Approximately 499 nursing homes will be provided vaccine by CVS and 357 by Walgreens. The vaccines will be administered by pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and nurses. Pharmacy technicians are participating under a recent waiver by the Board of Pharmacy that requires appropriate supervision under California law and specialized training. Specifically, the program: • Schedules and

coordinates on-site vaccine clinic dates directly with each facility. Pharmacy staff will visit each facility several times to ensure that all residents and employees who wish to be vaccinated get the vaccine. • Orders vaccines and associated supplies (e.g. syringes, needles, personal protective equipment). • Ensures cold storage for the vaccine. • Provides on-site administration of the vaccine to all residents and staff.

Residents of neighborhoods in Arcadia, Monrovia and Pasadena surrounded by charred hillsides made by the Bobcat Fire are building barricades to protect their homes from storm damage. One of the largest fires in Los Angeles County history, the Bobcat Fire tore through more than 100,000 acres in the San Gabriel Mountains and the Angeles National Forest in September. on Mount Wilson. Heavy rainfall could trigger flooding and debris flows in hillside communities. Because of the recent rainfall, Los Angeles County Health Officer Muntu Davis, cautioned residents that bacteria, chemicals, debris, trash, and other public health hazards from city streets and mountain areas are likely to contaminate ocean waters at and around discharging storm drains, creeks, and rivers after a rainfall. Individuals who enter the water in these areas could become ill. In preparation for the

rain, the L.A. County Department of Public Works issued a Phase I Mud and Debris Forecast for the neighborhoods of Ridgeside Drive and Oakglade Drive in Monrovia. A Phase I forecast indicates the possibility of minor to moderate flooding and mudflow/sediment deposition on these streets and below burned hillsides. If you reside in these areas, travel with caution. Those who do not live in the neighborhoods of Ridgeside Drive and Oakglade Drive should avoid the area. In the event that there

are mud and debris flow, both the L.A. County Department of Public Works and City of Monrovia Public Works will mobilize resources to respond to any mud and debris flow activities. Homicide investigators from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department are looking into the shooting death of a man in Monrovia. At approximately 8:19 p.m. on Dec. 23, Monrovia Police responded to the 400 block of West Duarte Road, between Mayflower

and Magnolia avenues, where they found the victim inside the location lying on the ground, unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper torso. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by Monrovia Fire Department personnel. Detectives are canvass-

MONROVIA Dec. 17 Hit & Run Traffic Collision -December 17 at 8:24 a.m., a caller reported a driver exited the 210 freeway at Huntington, and collided into a tree in a restaurant parking lot across the street from the exit. The driver abandoned the vehicle, then fled the scene on foot. Officers searched for the driver but were unable to locate him. The vehicle was towed. This investigation is continuing. Dec. 18 Armed Robbery-December 18 at 4:09 a.m., a resident in the 200 block of W. Pomona called to report that he had just been robbed at gun point. He said he was approached by a male subject who exited a black SUV. He stated the subject told him to give him everything he had while waving a gun in his face. This investigation is continuing. Domestic Violence – Suspect Arrested December 18 at 5:06 a.m., a resident in the 300 block of W. Colorado called to report a physical altercation between his brother and his brother's wife just occurred. Officers arrived and spoke with both subjects. An investigation was conducted and it was determined the wife was the aggressor. She was arrested and taken into custody. Trespassing / Battery – Suspects Arrested December 18 at 11:45 a.m., employees of a business in the 200 block of Railroad reported a suspicious person dressed in black filming in the business' private parking lot. Officers arrived and the subject moved to the public sidewalk. The business did not want to prosecute for trespassing. After officers left, the subject began instigating a fight with employees. One employee approached the subject and battered him. The subject in return used pepper spray on the employee. Officers were dispatched to the location again, and both parties placed one another under private person’s arrest. Officers arrested both parties.

BLOTTERS Vehicle Burglary -December 18 at 4:20 p.m., a resident in the 300 block of Genoa called to report a vehicle burglary. The resident walked outside her home and discovered someone had forced entry into her parked vehicle, then took her personal property. Officers arrived and took a report of the incident. This investigation is continuing. Residential BurglaryDecember 18 at 7:41 p.m., a resident in the 700 block of Mountain View returned home from work and saw his front door was ajar. Moments later a male subject exited the front door, saw the home owner, and ran back into the house. He continued out the back door and through neighboring yards. The home owner called the police and waited outside until the police arrived. Officers checked the area and the house, but did not locate the suspect. It was unknown what was taken at the time of the report. This investigation is continuing Reckless Driving / Resisting Arrest December 18 at 7:49 p.m., a resident in the 900 block of Greystone called to report a motorcyclist speeding up and down the street with the headlights off. Officers checked the area and located the motorcyclist. He was speeding, failed to stop at a stop sign, was not wearing a helmet, and the headlights were off. Several vehicles were driving in the area due to the neighborhood Christmas lights. The subject was identified by officers from previous encounters. Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the subject did not comply. He continued to drive to his residence where he quickly went into the backyard with his motorcycle. A police report was done and will be forwarded to the District Attorney's Office for filling considerations. Dec.19 Grand Theft - December 19 at 1:26 a.m., an employee from a business in the 1600 block of S. Mountain called to report four male subjects had just taken pallets of merchandise. They left the location prior to the police being notified. Officers responded

NEWS and investigated the matter. This investigation is continuing Domestic Battery December 19 at 8:48 p.m., a female in the 600 block of E. Olive called to report a battery. The female stated that during a monitored child visitation with her ex-boyfriend, the male pulled her hair and pushed her multiple times. The child was present, but sleeping during the incident. The female sustained no injuries. Officers arrived to the location, but the male subject was not located. This investigation is continuing. Dec. 20 Grand Theft December 20 at 3:47 a.m., a witness observed two males in the parking lot of a business in the 1200 block of S. Myrtle, removing the catalytic converter from underneath a truck. Officers arrived within minutes, but the suspects had already fled the area. This investigation is continuing Vehicle Burglary December 20 at 11:06 a.m., an employee of a furniture store in the 400 block of W. Huntington called to report a vehicle burglary. The employee walked outside to her vehicle and discovered the windows were shattered and her personal property from inside the vehicle was taken. This investigation is continuing. Attempt Theft December 20 at 12:28 p.m., a resident in the 1600 block of Pilgrim reported male subjects attempted to take a catalytic converter from her family's vehicle. The subjects were scared away by the resident’s father who ran after the suspects. The suspects fled in a vehicle. Officers searched for the suspects, but could not locate them. This investigation is continuing. Commercial Burglary – Suspect Arrested December 20 at 12:36 p.m., the manager of a hotel in the 700 block of W. Huntington reported she discovered a male subject inside the hotel's locked conference room. Officers arrived and found the subject had entered the conference room by forcing entry to an exterior window.

However, Donate Life, an organization which has been a Rose Parade participant for several years, came back to us because they liked the concept and thought it would be a way for them to continue promoting the importance of organ, eye, and tissue donation — the need for donors doesn’t stop during the pandemic.” Donate Life’s floral sculpture was created by Fiesta Parade Floats (FPF) at its

70,000-square-foot facility in Irwindale. Featuring a vibrant honeycomb built by bees, Donate Life’s floral sculpture illustrates that we are stronger when we work together as a community. In the honeycomb are 21 hexagonal memorial portraits, depicting the life that donors bequeath. Additionally, the names of six health professionals who have gone above and beyond the scope of duty to make donation and transplantation possible during the pandemic are inscribed on plaques. Hundreds of individually dedicated roses within two beautiful bushes contain personal messages of gratitude, hope, love, and remembrance from the families of donor recipients. A 40-foot canvas in front of Tournament House acknowledges that we’re living during challenging times. It says “Getting Through the Unexpected, Together. The view of our parade might look very different this year, but our mission never changes.” On it are photos of bands, floats, and equestrians — the Rose Parade’s three major hallmarks. As he articulates it, “It basically says ‘we didn’t go anywhere, this pandemic hasn’t beaten us, we’re going to be back.” Besides the two-hour television special on New Year’s Day, the CFP semifinals were originally going to be played at the Rose Bowl. However, because L.A. County had a surge of coronavirus outbreak, state health officials did not approve Rose Bowl representatives’ appeal

to allow 400 to 500 people in the 90,888-seat stadium. In the end, it was announced that the playoff between Clemson and Ohio State would be held in Texas. It was quite a disappointing outcome. Dr. Miller, however, chooses to take a philosophical view of it all, “I just want to say this because it’s so important. When you look at the financial pain and ruin, the illnesses, and the deaths wrought by this pandemic in this country and around the world, our parade and our game are relatively insignificant. We have to put it all in perspective. And we, like everybody else, just have to adapt and manage the situation as best we can. We have to recognize that as big a deal as our parade and game are to ourselves and, we’d like to think, to our country and the world, it’s a tiny piece of this horrible puzzle.” On the morning of Jan. 1, Pasadenans can take heart that even if the Rose Bowl Game won’t be held in our backyard, we have a Rose Parade TV special to wake up to — it will almost be just like a New Year’s Day of the past. County News LA County Offers Small Business Relief The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 has not only been a public health disaster, it has caused massive social and economic fallout throughout the United States and the rest of the world. The importance of small business to the region has been widely recognized by both the public and private sectors. Combined, local government, businesses, and community foundations have mobilized more than $204 million dollars toward COVID-19 small business relief efforts to date. This is the single largest metropolitan small business relief effort in the United States, followed by Chicago, New York, Miami, and Dallas. Made possible thanks to the generous support of Wells Fargo, Together For LA: First Report on LA’s COVID-19 Small Business Response captures how this response has evolved, identifies key challenges, and provides insights and recommendations from a diverse range of small business owners and leading economic recovery assistance providers in Los Angeles. The report is authored by Institute for Sustainable Development. Local Fox11 TV news profiles an example of a small business assisted through the collaborative effort profiled in the report. Unemployment in LA County reached a high point of 21.1% in May with 716,000 jobs lost to date. As of Oc-

tober data, the unemployment rate had declined to 12.3 percent, a significant recovery, but still historically high. RIVERSIDE Riverside County News Boxing Day Homicide On December 26, 2020, at about 4:01 a.m., deputies from the Lake Elsinore Station were dispatched to a report of a shooting at a residence in the 37000 block of Calle de Lobo, La Cresta. Upon arrival, deputies made contact with two uninjured male residents. They were directed inside where deputies found four males with gunshot wounds. Two males had succumbed to their wounds, and two males were transported to a local hospital, also suffering from gunshot wounds. Deputies secured the area as a crime scene and investigators from the Lake Elsinore Station responded. The Central Homicide Unit also responded and assumed the investigation. The investigation determined this to be a botched home invasion robbery, involving the suspects and residents to have exchanged gunfire. One of the surviving males and one of the deceased males were determined to be suspects who forced entry into the residence and began assaulting one of the occupants inside, leading to the shooting. At least one additional suspect fled the residence and drove away in an unknown make vehicle. The identity of the two deceased males will not be released, pending notification to next of kin. The investigation is cur-

SAN BERNARDINO San Bernardino County News Sheriff 's Aviation Rescue personnel conducted a hoist rescue in the area of Green Valley Lake On December 27, 2020, Sheriff’s Aviation personnel assisted Twin Peaks personnel with a search and rescue in the Green Valley area. Helicopter 40King4 responded and conducted a search for Charles Schroeder, who became lost while hiking in the area. The crew located him stuck on the side of a hill and attempted to guide Schroeder to the trail, but he was unable to walk himself to safety. Charles Schroeder, 67 was unharmed. Due to the terrain and impending darkness, 40King4 personnel determined a hoist rescue was necessary and requested Sheriff’s

Aviation Rescue personnel (40King3). 40K3 arrived at the location and lowered a medic down to Schroeder and the medic assisted with placing him in a rescue harness. Schroeder was hoisted up to the helicopter and transported to a local school where Twin Peak deputies and San Bernardino County Fire personnel were waiting. Schroeder was evaluated and treated by Fire personnel. 40King3 responded back to the hoist location, picked up their medic. Fatal shooting at the Kimberly Apartments in Victorville on Christmas Eve On Thursday, December 24, 2020 at 12:51 a.m. deputies responded to multiple calls of shots fired and a man down in the parking lot of the Kimberly Apartments. Deputies arrived and found the victim, later identified as Peter Clayton, in the west parking lot and unresponsive. Clayton was pronounced deceased at the scene. Monrovia’s Liberace Steak House Sneak Preview All Dressed Up and Nowhere to go, Aner Iglesias is Hopeful for 2021

he owner of Liberace Steakhouse in Monrovia is no stranger to celebrity, and he knows the importance of being patient. Taking over T-Phillips in March, real estate magnate and Baja Ranch Markets (King Ranch Markets) founder Aner Iglesias Sr. had a dream to open a high-class steak restaurant in the city of Monrovia, and one with a flair like no other restaurant this side of Las Vegas. He was hoping to open August. The world had other plans. The restaurant, as the name clearly implies, hosts a delightful and rare collection of Liberace’s priceless costumes, all carefully encased in well-lit frames that pay a delectable homage to the extraordinary and legendary entertainer who passed away in 1987. The tastefully, albeit rather dazzling, yet-to-open steak house has delighted and intrigued passersby on Myrtle Avenue for several months during the pandemic. For some, the name means nothing but to many people and late boomers, Liberace was a tour de force in the world of showbiz and what better way to honor the performer than with a great steak with a candelabra.

City councilman Larry Spicer has known Aner Iglesias for 40 plus years and says his mouth is watering for the day Liberace’s Steak House opens…” I’ll be the first in line for that incredible steak when he opens…” Spicer said. A casual look inside, especially at night, will thrill Liberace fans with one of the more famous (and rather heavy) sequined outfits Liberace used to wear onstage; beautifully framed in a museum like glass enclosure…as if to beckon you into the entertainer’s lair. Replete with chandeliers, memorabilia from the entertainer’s life, Liberace Steak House is one of a handful of officially licensed restaurants that can boast such a fine Liberace inspired eatery. But alas, Covid-19 has put a hold on Aner Iglesias Sr.’s exclusive and elegant plans for a truly gourmet steak house themed like no other. There was a brief time recently, when he thought he’d be able to at least do some patio dining but all too quickly, the state and county nixed that aspiration …for all restaurants. Liberace’s musical talents were often upstaged by his effervescent and flamboyant dry and sometimes self-effacing wit: Of course, I couldn't go out in the street in clothes

like this, I'd get picked up. Come to think of it, it might be fun. When asked what he did with the money he won in a libel suit against the "London Daily Mirror" in 1959 - I cried all the way to the bank! Gee, you've been such a wonderful audience that I don't like to take your money. But I will! Aner Iglesias Sr. also hopes to share with Monrovia a selection of Liberace cars for special events: We hope the 1961 Rolls-Royce Phantom V might be one. The entire car is covered with smallmirrored tiles, and with classic horses etched into them along the running boards. he New Year is finally here. We've been waiting for 2021 since Friday, March 13, 2020. That was the day that it became apparent that a pandemic was going to be a big part of 2020. Since then, we've felt that if we can just hang on until January, things will go back to normal. Although I hope this is the case, we have to prepare ourselves to move forward either way. It will take time to vaccinate everyone. In the meantime, many companies have already announced that remote work will continue through the fall. This is a huge bummer for some people, and a relief for others. Whatever your perception is of this possible outcome, it's best to prepare for anything. And, whatever happens, your life and career must continue to move forward.

By now, working from home has started to be routine for most people. If possible, it may be time to look for ways to put in a little extra effort. I, for one, may look to upgrade from the hoodie and sweats that have become my uniform. And it's also the time to begin to think about your normal career goals. Did you know that many of the educational conferences you once attended in person are now online — and they are less expensive? This opens up options in terms of continuing education and there's a good chance your

company budget for training won't be tapped out. If you've thought of looking for a new job, this is a great time to begin. Think of this way. Many companies are still hiring. But they are now conducting interviews online. This means that you won't have to fly around the company to interview and you won't have to sneak out of work. Plus, if you land an offer, your new company is more likely to offer you a permanently remote position than they were in the past. This year, I heard from job seekers

who looked outside of their metro area. They applied to jobs that were in other cities and were not listed as remote, but companies considered them anyway! And they didn't expect the new employees to move. n Monday, 12/28, Governor Newsom extended the current Stay at Home Surge Response indefinitely. Some of our local restaurants would like to open in protest, but will they? I doubt it.. While it sounds noble, it’s not worth getting their licenses and permits pulled. Our town, while indeed wonderful, is certainly split down the middle when it comes to opening our businesses. As much as the restaurant owners want to open, they have too many reasons not to, namely the Karens, as they’ve been so named by social media. Keep in mind that by being open only for take-out, these restaurants

are losing at least 75% of their revenue. The employees being laid off aren’t just hostesses or cashiers. These are adults, whose income supports a family. Sadly, it seems the only people who understand the extreme need these people are placed in, are the people that are also there or have been at one time. We have done everything right. We didn’t wear masks when Fauci said that it did not provide perfect protection and often had unintended consequences. Now we wear them because we’re told that we should, even though they aren’t a substitution for 6 feet of separation. We stopped eating indoors because we were told it was safer outside. Restaurants spent thousands on retrofitting any outdoor area they could. Now, we can’t eat outdoors because

it’s deemed unsafe. Question: how many of you went to Walmart, Vons or Home Depot this holiday season? Yes, all were masked, yet none were distanced. We flip and flop with each change, following whatever rules come next. Is this what we are calling science? Common sense? None of it makes any sense at all. I do not negate the severity of this virus. Sadly, many have lost loved ones. But show us the data. Show us why we are not getting sick at the market, but we are at the super, newly renovated hair and nail salons. Show us how we are getting sick while dining outdoors, but not at a protest. As a dear friend said just yesterday, “because one has sympathy for suffering businesses, doesn’t mean one doesn’t take the virus seriously.”

How many businesses will we lose in Old Town? During our last local election, there was much ado about bringing in new businesses. Why is Toys r Us still empty? Applebee’s? Log into any local FB group and you could have found a myriad of posts about Old Town having too many pubs & eateries. Just last year, Amazon was our biggest threat.
