his year’s general election is right around the corner. As Nov. 3 grows nearer, voters must understand everything that will appear on their ballots. There will be a total of 12 propositions for Californians to vote on this year. While it may be difficult to research all of them on one’s own, these are all the ballot initiatives voters will be asked to decide on this election. California Proposition 14: Stem Cell Research Initiative Bond With this proposition, voters will be deciding on whether or not to issue $5.5 billion in state bonds to the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM). CIRM was created in 2004 after voters approved Proposition 71, the California Stem Cell and Research Initiative, to fund

stem cell research along with issuing $3 billion in bonds. Proposition 71 also created a 29-member governing board to oversee the program; Proposition 14 would increase the number of members to 35. Approving this initiative would increase state costs possibly over the next 30 years. California Proposition 15: Tax on Commercial and Industrial Properties for Education and Local Government Funding Initiative The approval of this measure would mean amending the state’s constitution to require that commercial and industrial properties be taxed according to market value rather than on the purchase price. Exempted from these changes are residential properties, agricultural land and owners of commercial and industrial properties whose value is less than $3 million. Those opposed argue that the

measure would repeal taxpayer protections provided by Proposition 13, an initiative approved in 1978 that stabilized state property taxes by capping it at a 2% increase per year. “But, as bad as that would be for the economy overall, split roll takes special aim at agriculture and would sweep across our farms and ranches like a wildfire,” wrote Ted Gaines, a former state senator and member of the California State Board of Equalization wrote for Bakersfield.com. Proposition 15 only applies to commercial and industrial properties, or holdings worth over $3 million. Those who approve argue that larger companies should not be taxed the same way that homeowners or smaller businesses do. ith election day about one month away, the country is deeply divided on not only the candidates but also on the huge number of issues facing this enormously difficult and divisive year. California is automatically mailing ballots to those citizens who registered to vote this year, much to the chagrin of President Donald Trump, who for months has been falsely saying that mail-in votes are fraudulent, without any evidence. According to a quote in The New York Times, the president expressed his annoyance after the Justice Department disclosed details about an inquiry into nine discarded mail-in ballots found in Pennsylvania. “These ballots are a horror show,” Trump said. “They found six ballots in an office yesterday, in a garbage can. They were Trump ballots, eight ballots in an office yesterday, in a certain state. And they had Trump written on it, and they were thrown in a garbage can. This is what is going to happen, this is what is going to happen, and we are investigating that. It’s a terrible thing that is going on with these ballots — who is sending them?” In reality, seven of the nine ballots were for Trump. The ballots first came to the nation’s attention last Thursday when the Justice Department issued a press release in apparent coordination with the White House. According to Politico, “Election experts accused the Justice Department of politicizing a still-pending investigation — and pointed to the revelation that seven of the nine discarded ballots had been cast for Trump as especially concerning.” An unidentified “individual was contracted to assist with the 2020 General Election as a temporary season independent contractor and began work on Monday, Sept. 14,2020. Former Pasadena Therapist Pleads to Sexually Abusing Patients A former marriage and family therapist in Pasadena has pleaded no contest to sexually abusing seven patients, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced Thursday. Edgar Gustavo Villamarin, 66, of Pasadena entered the plea Wednesday to seven counts of

sexual battery by fraud, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Villamarin is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 1 in Department J of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Pasadena Branch. Deputy District Attorney Lisa Daruty Tanner said the defen-

dant is expected to be sentenced to four years in state prison and ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. The victims were touched or fondled by Villamarin between 2014 and 2018, the prosecutor said. The case was investigated by the Pasadena Police Department.

The money from these new taxes would be dispersed in a very specific way rather than going to one general fund. The ballot initiative states that revenue from the new taxations would go to public schools, community colleges and local governments. California Proposition 16: Repeal Proposition 209 Affirmative Action Amendment Proposition 209, or the Affirmative Action Initiative, is a measure approved in 1996 which amended the state constitution to prohibit public state institutions from considering race, sex, or ethnicity in areas of public employment, public education and public contracting, therefore banning the use of affirmative action. Affirmative action is the practice of favoring individuals in certain groups that are known to have been historically discriminated against. It was used to ensure that minority groups had more access to public employment and schooling. Proposition 16 would defeat Proposition 209. If approved, state and local governments, public schools and other public services would be allowed to use affirmative action policies that would grant access to people based on their race, sex and ethnicity. California Proposition 17: Voting Rights Restoration for Persons on parole Amendment

Currently, the state’s constitution disqualifies people with felonies from voting until both their prison sentence and parole are completed. Proposition 17 would amend that law by allowing people with felonies who have completed their prison sentence to vote while on parole. California Proposition 18: Primary Voting for 17-Year-Olds Amendment A “yes” vote for this initiative would make it possible for 17-year-olds to vote in primary elections if they will be turning 18 by the time of the general election. California Proposition 19: Property Tax Transfers, Exemptions, and Revenue for Wildfire Agencies and Counties Amendment This ballot initiative targets the taxes of homeowners who are 55 or older, people with disabilities, or people who lost their homes to a natural disaster. A “yes” vote on Proposition 19 would amend the state’s constitution to allow these homeowners to transfer their lower property taxes to their newer home if they choose to buy somewhere else in the state regardless of its market value, giving them a major tax break. It also means that if someone were to inherit their home from a family member and later try to rent it out to Airbnb instead of using it as their primary home, they would receive a tax increase based on the home’s present market value. Additional money made from this value would go to firefighters and public schools.

A “no” vote means the law remains the same and property tax transfers can only occur if the market value is the same or higher of their previous home. California Proposition 20: Criminal Sentencing, Parole, and DNA Collection Initiative Proposition 20 would change many laws passed to reduce the state’s prison population. Crimes like theft and fraud are currently charged as misdemeanors, Proposition 20 would change that so they are charged as felonies. It would also make parole review boards look at other factors when determining whether or not nonviolent felons should receive parole. These new elements would include age, skills and mental condition. Along with these changes, the proposition would also require that convicted felons submit their DNA to the state and federal government databases. A vote “yes” would increase the jail population leading to an estimated major increase in the state’s costs. California Proposition 21: Local Rent Control Initiative This proposition would allow local governments to establish rent control on properties that are over 15 years old. California Proposition 22: App-Based Drivers as Contractors and Labor Policies Initiative.

READER REACTS TO LETTER FROM READER SHARING THOUGHTS ON 2020 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION This is perhaps the most depressing letter I've ever felt compelled to write. I agree with the comments made by Joe B. in his Sept. 24 letter to the editor concerning Trump's incompetence as president and his callousness towards those who cannot help themselves. Judging from his actions over the past four years, I believe it's no exaggeration to say that he is the most dangerous man on earth. Consider, for example, his stated intention to upgrade our nuclear arsenal — which already is capable of destroying the world several times over.

A documentary film about the world's first nuclear test at Alamogordo, N.M. in 1945 shows Dr. Robert Oppenheimer shedding anguished tears while watching the spectacle, and quoting from the Hindu scripture Bhagavad-Gita, "Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds." Within just a fraction of a second after the A-bombs exploded in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, thousands of people within half a mile from the atomic fireballs turned into piles of smoking char as their internal organs boiled away. And thousands more who were closer to the epicenter, were vaporized in the blast. Imagine the carnage! In all, about 120,000 lost their lives immediately by the two bombs, and tens of thou-

sands more died later from radiation exposure. Yet, as hard as it is to believe, a Times magazine article reported in 1981 that those diabolical weapons "were puny and primitive by today's thermonuclear standards." Dr. Helen Caldicott, founder of the 1978 Physicians for Social Responsibility, recently wrote that a 20-megawatt bomb (the equivalent of twenty million tons of TNT) would evaporate all life within six miles in all directions. And she surmised that "75 years after the dawn of the nuclear age, we are as ready as ever to extinguish ourselves." Progressive Americans want free healthcare and a college education for all. Conservative Americans want the corporations to

run our country for profit while more than a few Americans, I'm sure, only want their sports teams to win. Well, no one will have anything if we are all dead after a nuclear Armageddon. Biden's pledge to push for fewer nukes and (I hope) motivate other nuclear powers to do the same, should be the best reason to vote for him. He may be our only hope that the world will continue to exist a little longer. High school students are extremely busy – homework, extra-curricular activities in art and sports, campus clubs, all compete for their time. As if all that weren’t difficult enough, they have to make sure they get excellent marks in their courses and on the standardized tests. Their GPAs and SAT/

ACT scores have to impress college admissions officers to really consider their application. If standardized test scores are no longer required by the schools to which your children are applying, their GPA is all the more crucial – it becomes the single, most important component of their transcript. This year, the pandemic has added yet another stressinducing element to the college application process. Most of your children are distance learning and some need assistance with their

coursework. Parents can’t reasonably be expected to help their children with all their lessons so tutoring companies have become, of late, a booming enterprise. Find one that offers options to fit your student’s specific need and your family’s budget. A company called Mundo Academy provides excellent tutoring services in the Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley area. Likewise, socially-minded high school and college students have created free tutoring services and learning platforms to help children during the coronavirus pandemic. Two of these organizations include Sailors Learning and Wave Learning Festival, which I have written about. If you’re overwhelmed, as most of us are at this time, please reach out for assistance. The CDC has put together a resource kit for parents, divided by age group, to help them ensure their children’s well-being. The site also has links to other resources that cover various concerns. Another CDC webpage is dedicated to helping parents manage stress during the coronavirus pandemic. That said, let me get back to the purpose of this college guide. I know several parents who enroll their kids in SAT prep courses as early as ninth grade and some independent counselors recommend that students sit for the SAT in 10th grade. However, I feel that taking the SAT this early isn’t necessarily the best course of action – students still have so much to learn and aren’t really ready for this test. Unless there are extenuating circumstances (if the SAT is a requirement for an advanced math course, for instance) that necessitate them to take it, I would suggest waiting a bit. Read More on

he Avalon Monrovia Specific Plan and MixedUse Development is a project composed of a single five level building containing 154 apartment residential units, 3,500

square feet of ground-floor retail, and a five-story, sixlevel 286-space parking garage on a 2.1-acre site. Thirteen of the dwelling units will be reserved for lower-income residents. Two public hearings were held for the project, including at the Planning Commission meeting on

Aug. 15, 2018, and at the City Council meeting on Sept. 4, 2018, when council unanimously approved the project. Work stopped temporarily two weeks ago due to the extremely unhealthy air quality in Monrovia as a direct result of the Bobcat Fire but work has resumed.

The BBC reported that the president has said that universal mail-in voting would make the country “a laughing stock.” His comments came after the U.S. Postal Service warned in August that millions of mail-in ballots may not arrive in time to be counted in November's election. On Sept. 17, Judge Stanley Bastian issued a nationwide preliminary injunction blocking changes at the USPS. According to the Los Angeles Times, Bastian called the changes announced by Postmaster General Louis De Joy, a loyal supporter of the president, “a politically motivated attack on the efficiency of the Postal Service” ahead of the election. A record number of people are expected to vote by mail due in no small

part to the pandemic. And despite the president’s continued attacks against mail-in voting, a system he himself uses, is safe from tampering. In California, all voters will receive a vote-by-mail ballot for the November election. County elections officials will begin mailing mail-in ballots to all active registered voters in by Oct. 5, 2020. Ballots returned by mail must be postmarked by Nov. 3, 2020; ballots returned at a secure ballot drop box must be deposited by 8 p.m. on Nov. 3, 2020. Voters have until Oct. 27 to request a mail-in ballot. One or more early voting locations will be available in many counties for at least four days beginning the Saturday before the Nov. 3 election. Voting early at the Los Angeles County Registrar's headquarters will start on Monday, Oct. 5, 2020 on the third floor. Voting locations will offer voter registration, replacement ballots, accessible voting machines, and language assistance. Voters who have moved or not voted in the last

few elections should check their registration status. L.A. County voters can verify that they are registered to vote at lavote.net/ vrstatus. To vote in the Nov. 3 election, voters must submit a registration form postmarked no later than Oct. 19. However, same day voter registration is also an option. Eligible citizens who need to register or re-register to vote within 14 days of an election can complete this process to register and vote at their county elections office, polling place, or vote center. Their ballots will be processed and counted once the county elections office has completed the voter registration verification process. Before dropping off ballots, check that ballot cards are inside the official return envelope, securely sealed, signed and dated. After returning your voted ballot via drop box or by mail you can check your ballot to make sure it was received and tallied through the Vote by Mail Status tool.

ARCADIA Sept. 20 At 3:15 a.m., an officer witnessed a vehicle driving on the wrong side of the road near the intersection of Huntington Drive and La Cadena Avenue. An officer initiated a traffic stop and detected a strong odor of alcohol emitting from the driver’s breath. Through a series of tests, the officer discovered the 37-year-old male from Rosemead had a blood alcohol content of .150%. The suspect was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. At 2:21 p.m., an officer responded to the intersection of Golden West Avenue and Longden Avenue regarding an activation of an Arcadia Police Department GPS tracker. Arcadia PD detectives had previously deployed decoy bicycles with tracking devices to combat the increase in bike thefts throughout the city. An investigation revealed a 38-year-old male from El Monte was in possession of the stolen bicycle and GPS tracker. The suspect was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. Sept. 21 At 9:17 a.m., an officer responded to the 100 block of East Wistaria Avenue regarding a vehicle burglary report. The officer determined unknown suspect(s) entered two vehicles and stole various tools. The investigation is pending a review of the surveillance footage. At 12:38 p.m., an officer responded to Springhill Suites, located at 99 N. Second Ave., regarding a grand theft report. The victim stated he left his bag containing two cellphones and a wallet on a bench. He later discovered the bag had gone missing. There is no surveillance footage or suspect information at this time. Sept. 22 At 10:37 a.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 800 block of West Foothill Boulevard regarding a burglary investigation. The officer determined two transients were sleeping at the location, they had damaged the walls in one of the rooms and were in possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. A 36-year-old male from Pasa-

During record checks of the suspects, the officer discovered the 36-yearold male had two outstanding misdemeanor warrants. At 1:10 p.m., an officer took a telephonic report of a fraud incident. The victim stated he recently received two credit application rejection letters, even though he never applied for any credit cards. The victim does not know the identity of the suspect(s) or how they obtained his personal information. Sept. 23 At 8:11 a.m., an officer responded to the 800 block of West Foothill Boulevard regarding a burglary report. The officer determined that sometime after Arcadia Police Department responded on Sept. 22, unknown suspect(s) attempted to enter the location and steal electricity but failed. No suspects were located. There is no suspect information at this time. At 4:06 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 600 block of West Longden Avenue regarding a mail theft report. A witness reported seeing the suspect open several mailboxes and flee with something in his hand. The suspect fled in an older model: brown, four-door sedan west bound. The suspect is described as a male Hispanic, short, heavyset, seen wearing a black hat, white shirt, blue shorts, and carrying a gray backpack. Assisting officers and an airship conducted an area check but were unsuccessful.

MONROVIA Sept. 17 At 1:54 a.m., officers responded to a family disturbance in the 500 block of West Duarte. A male and female couple had been arguing and the male subject slapped the female. When she tried to call the police, he broke her phone. Officers conducted an investigation and the male subject was arrested for domestic battery. At 12:41 p.m., a resi-

dent in the 400 block of East Lemon called police to report a male subject loitering at the location. The subject had already been advised of a no-trespass authorization against him. Officers arrived and located the subject inside the residence. Further investigation revealed he had been advised and knew he was not supposed to be at the location. The subject was arrested for trespassing. At 8:09 p.m., an Amazon driver left his keys inside his vehicle as he dropped off a package in the 700 block of West Duarte. As he was dropping off the package, a suspect entered his vehicle and fled the scene. The vehicle was then entered into the stolen vehicle system. This investigation is continuing. At 8:27 p.m., a male subject inside a business in the 300 block of West Huntington threatened to stab a security guard with a pocketknife after being told to leave the store. Officers arrived at the location, but the suspect had already left the area and could not be located. This investigation is continuing. Sept. 18 At 10:29 a.m., a customer at a restaurant in the 400 block of South Myrtle called police to report an employee hit him. Officers responded along with paramedics. The suspect had left the scene before officers arrived. This investigation is continuing. At 12:18 p.m., a resident in the 200 block of West Walnut discovered someone had forced entry into his garage and took tools and a bicycle. Officers arrived and conducted an investigation. The investigation is continuing. At 12:45 p.m., an employee of a hotel in the 700 block of West Huntington reported a male subject inside the hotel behaving erratically. Officers responded and determined the subject was under the influence of a controlled substance. He was arrested and held for a sobering period.

El Monte News City of El Monte Restructures Pension Obligations to Enhance Budgetary Flexibility, Fiscal Sustainability and Resiliency In June 2020, the City of El Monte successfully restructured $138 million of its debt relating to pension liabilities to enhance the city’s overall financial sustainability. The City of El Monte closed on its $118 million Pension Obligation Bond (POBs) issue on June 23, 2020 to refinance and restructure its unfunded liability with CalPERS. On June 30, 2020, the City issued Lease Revenue Bonds (LRBs) to refinance and restructure the majority of its outstanding supplemental retirement fund liability with PARS. Both transactions secured interest rates signifi-

cantly below those that were being previously paid – 3.82% vs. 7.00% on the POBs and 3.99% vs. 6.50% on the LRBs. Over time, this restructuring will reduce the contributions needed from the city’s general fund and provide an ability to reduce the pension tax override levy for the benefit of the city’s residents. Long Beach News City of Long Beach Staff Furloughs Begin Friday As part of the City’s multi-step approach to resolving its $30 million shortfall in Fiscal Year 2021, the majority of City of Long Beach employees will be furloughed for 26 days from October 2020 through September 2021. This action will save $11 million in the General Fund and provide $30 million in savings for all funds. The furloughs were negotiated with the City’s various employee associations through multi-year agreements as a way to generate cost savings, avoid permanent service reductions to the public and prevent additional layoffs.

Stop by the Splash Pads at Citrus Park (1250 Santana Way) and/or Ridgeline Park (2850 Ridgeline Drive) from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. When visiting the Splash Pads, please be sure to wear proper swimming attire. Visitors should also observe COVID guidelines like maintaining 6 feet of distance, wearing face covering, washing hands, sanitizing amenities and following other posted guidelines.

The County has developed guidance for residents who plan to celebrate Halloween, which outlines how activities like trick-ortreating or trunk-or-treating can be enjoyed safely. It also provides safer alternatives to those activities. The County has also developed guidance for operators of pumpkin patches. Outdoor sales of pumpkins are allowed, and food, beverages, games, mazes, and other activities can be offered under certain conditions. Pumpkin patch operators should contact the County with questions before they open. The state currently does not allow amusement park rides of any kind or other high-touch/ close contact attractions such as: haunted houses, animal rides, petting zoos, slides, bounce houses, and ball pits.

City of Riverside Encourages Voters to Apply to Charter Review Committee The City of Riverside encourages registered voters who live within the city limits to apply for a position on the Charter Review Committee, which examines the document that governs how the city is run and may recommend changes for consideration by the City Council. The deadline to apply is Oct. 12, 2020. An 11-member citizen advisory committee made up of registered voters of Riverside will review whether to grant the mayor a vote and whether to publish an annual report on written complaints or whistle‑blower complaints alleging fraud, waste, abuse, or criminal conduct. The committee also will recommend whether such measures should be put on Nov. 2, 2021 ballot, and/or on Nov. 1, 2022. The City Council decides whether amendments appear on the ballot. Each City Councilmember will directly appoint one member to the Charter Review Committee. The Mayor will directly appoint two at-large members. The two remaining at-large members and two alternates will be selected from applicants following interviews with the Mayor and City Council. SAN BERNARDINO San Bernardino County News San Bernardino County’s Move into Red Tier is Delayed County officials announced Tuesday that a late spike in cases due to the Labor Day holiday weekend caused the San Bernardino County case rate to exceed the criteria for achieving a red-tier designation. Specifically, the county’s positivity rate of 5.67% was low enough to make the cut; unfortunately, the county reported 7.75 cases per day per 100,000 residents, which is well above the figure the state requires to proceed to the less restrictive tier. Moreover, because the state requires a county to maintain supportive numbers for a full two-week period (and continue those numbers to remain in the favorable tier), the county is forced to “reset the clock” and begin a new 14-day tracking period.

Contrary to popular belief, witches were not burned at the stake for the crime of witchcraft in the U.S., though many were hanged for it, according to the Salem Witch Museum. However, throughout Europe many witches were burned, as witchcraft carried the same punishment as heresy. In England, and therefore its colonies, witchcraft was treated as a felony and carried a punishment of hanging by execution. Furthermore, Salem was not the colonies’ first experience with witch trials. According to the New Haven Register, “About 45 years prior to the Salem witch trials, Connecticut was the first of the 13 colonies in Colonial America to execute a so-called witch, according to the Seymour Public Library.” Alse Young of Windsor was executed on May 26, 1647. Glidden ‘Bud’ Switzer Aug. 25, 1928 – Sept. 23, 2020 Bill COBURN

I

t is our sad duty to report that Glidden “Bud” Switzer peacefully passed away on Sept. 23, shortly after his 92nd birthday. The 2006 Sierra Madre Citizen of the Year and a former 4th of July Grand Marshal, Bud was best known for his pumpkin carving, which

led to an annual Halloween event on Alegria that brings visitors to the city from miles around. Active in the VFW, Bud was an avid runner for many years, an active supporter of the Mt. Wilson Trail Race, and also worked with John Grijalva on the establishment of the Memorial Park Veteran’s Wall. He was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Donna Mae, and his son Kevin. He

is survived by a son Cam, and two daughters, Debbie and Lisa. Bud was a beloved member of the Sierra Madre community for decades, and we will have much more to say in a future article on Bud. He will truly be missed. The family has established a Remembrance Page (remembered.com/ tributewall/budswitzer) for anyone who would like to share a “Bud story.”

And it can be argued that nowhere is it performed more at its magnificence than at the Pasadena Playhouse, the state theatre of California. wo plus years have passed since the initial ceremonial groundbreaking of one of Arcadia’s largest hotel projects ever approved by council, Le Meridien by Marriott. The five-story building on the site formerly occupied by the Santa Anita Inn was set to open in the first quarter of 2020. Apparently, there have been some delays, but progress is shaping a new Arcadia landscape. Hopefully the public will soon get a glimpse of the architect’s imaginative combination of Art Deco elements, inspired

by nearby Santa Anita Park, with Modernist features. Architecture firm Architects Orange, interior design firm Linda Snyder Associates, and Snyder Langston have been tapped as the construction team to build the Le Meridien development. Plans call for a total of 223 rooms, as well as a specialty restaurant, a ballroom, and meeting spaces. The property will provide a cosmopolitan rooftop pool and bar with full food service. The building will incorporate glass elements that glow at night, surrounded by lush gardens against the backdrop of the San Gabriel Mountains. A 24-foot long Redwood bench anchors the lobby’s 20-foot

art-masterpiece glass wall, which has been hand-carved in California. “The bench is made from one of the original Redwoods, which was growing on the property and was carefully removed and repurposed preserving a piece of the site’s heritage,” according to a press release. Le Meridien will also present a full-service spa adjacent to the property and a world class Asian-fusion dining experience in the hotel restaurant. The hotel will span across a 6.5-acre site. That project, including Le Meridien and mixed-used full-service condominiums and shopping, is known as One Gallup Way.

L.A. County to Allow Breweries and Wineries to Reopen for Outdoor Service Tuesday, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a motion authored by Supervisor Janice Hahn and co-authored by Supervisor Kathryn Barger which will allow breweries and wineries to begin outdoor service in one week, in accordance with current state health orders. California has allowed breweries and wineries to reopen for outdoor service if they partner with a thirdparty permitted food vendor. However, the County of Los Angeles has not permitted breweries and wineries that do not have restaurant

licenses to resume service. While several breweries and wineries do have restaurant licenses and small kitchens, many do not and have been struggling to survive. "I think it is time that we allow our breweries and wineries to resume outdoor service consistent with the State orders," said Hahn. "We have made progress slowing the spread of this virus and we did not see the spike in cases after Labor Day that I know many of us had been dreading. The action we are taking today puts us in line with the State's health orders."

The reopenings shall abide by strict safety guidelines, including but not limited to: outside operations, limited hours of operation, required reservations, appropriate social distancing, and all appropriate safety measures. The motion passed with a vote of 3-2, supervisors Sheila Kuehl and Mark Ridley-Thomas did not support the move. “In my own humble opinion, I think it’s not a great idea to say, ‘Thank you, Dr. Ferrer, but we’re not going to support your advice,’” Kuehl said.

I'm really proud of the piece and we're all excited to share it with our community and the world.” I then ask Feldman to describe the challenge of pivoting from live stage productions to virtual offerings, what went into planning the events for PlayhouseLive, and how he plans to recreate the communal experience of live theatre when we can't physically be with other people. “First of all, nothing can replicate the live experience and that wasn't something we were trying to do in any way,” clarifies Feldman. “Rather, we wanted to provide an alternative experience that merged the worlds of theater, film and television. It's a hybrid experience and something we had fun exploring. In addition, we wanted to pull the curtain back and expose the backstage world with documentaries, interviews with artists and other behind-the-scenes shows giving patrons an experience they can't get by sitting in our seats in the theater.”

“This was a massive challenge and I'm so proud of our Playhouse team for pulling this off. Between learning new skills, adapting our existing expertise, and all the COVID complications, we've all grown so much since we started this effort a few months ago,” declares Feldman. An empty theatre must be a lonely sight and I ask Feldman if he has been to the Playhouse since the lockdown began in mid-March. He replies, “Yes! I'm actually here in the building right now! It's a little haunting seeing the empty theater but it's actually one of my favorite things. There is an amazing energy inside the empty auditorium. The potential of what is to come is present when you stand on the bare stage. I like to think about all the people and great theater that will inhabit this building when this mess is all over. That's exciting!” What lessons can we learn from these extraordinary times, I query. Feldman responds, “I think through the grief and loss of what we had all expected these past few months to be, we can refocus

on what is important to us. I have felt myself and others around me change and have a better understanding of ourselves.” Lastly, I invite Feldman to share any other thoughts he would like me to write. He says, “There are so many people in need in our community right now. And for those who are fortunate enough to be able to support others during this time, I'd just want to advocate for thinking about supporting the arts. If we all band together, getting through this time and don't support our cultural institutions, is that really the world we want to come back to? We must recognize that in order for us to return to a world that is full of vibrant culture, NOW is the time to invest in our nonprofit cultural institutions. Otherwise, many won't be with us on the other side of the pandemic.” Live theatre performances went on even at the height of the world wars. Let’s ensure the survival and endurance of theatre for the next several thousand years after we’ve won the fight against this global pandemic.

The proposed amendments would revise existing development standards related to single-family dwellings within the RS-1, RS-2, RS-4, and RS-6 zones, including properties within Landmark District (LD) overlay zones.
