n the past year, Pasadena Police efforts have taken 180 guns off the street and seven in the past week alone, Chief John Perez told Pasadena Independent Monday. Despite continuous efforts and enforcement, guns, often called ghost guns, still end up on the streets of Pasadena and often in the hands of criminals. Perez said his officers face this possibility every time they make a stop. Most stops do not turn fatal, he said. However, on Saturday, Aug. 15, at about 7:53 p.m., two Pasadena
police officers initiated a traffic stop on a car occupied by two men for an alleged vehicle violation on Raymond Avenue and Grandview Street. The rapid succession of events led to an officer involved shooting, leaving one Black male dead. During the traffic stop, one of the passengers “became uncooperative, preventing a search of his person,” according to police. The passenger ran into the street and allegedly removed a firearm from the waistband of his pants. An officer fired his weapon twice striking Anthony McClain at least once in the flank of his body. Fueled by the national outrage, another series of demonstrations to defund the police emerged after a Black man was killed by a white police officer Saturday in Pasadena. After a weekend of confrontations with police — including one man who was tasered and some people who were struck with pepper spray, including an 11-yearold boy — activists joined forces via social media to get the word out that Black lives matter. Contrary to social media reports, rubber bullets were not used by Pasadena police on protesters. On Monday at 5 p.m., scores of residents blocked Raymond Avenue, near Washington, to start a march into the city to demand justice for Black residents, blasting music and carrying signs to defund the police, “Say his name, Anthony McClain” and “ Cops killed Anthony McClain,” to name a few. Spearhead by local Black Lives Matter activist Jasmine “Abdulla” Richards, the passionate and peaceful group was visibly shaken by the weekend shooting of 32-year-old Anthony McClain who was killed by police following a traffic stop at the corner of North Raymond Avenue and Grandview Street, near La Pintoresca Park. Mayor Pro Tem Tyron Hampton was present Monday on Raymond where several confrontations took place. Hampton helped quell the rhetoric and discussed the situation privately with a few individuals away from the main crowd. PASADENA COUNCIL VOTES TO RESUME PARKING ENFORCEMENT At Monday’s meeting, City Council voted to resume enforcement of the overnight parking ordinance, daytime street sweeping, and the development of other parking programs as listed below. • Overnight enforcement resumed Tuesday. Warnings to be issued for two weeks, with citations to resume Sept. 1. • Sale of emergency COVID-19 overnight parking permits that would allow vehicles not otherwise qualified to park on street.
Permits will be valid for 90-day increments and can be renewed until the end of the city's safer at home order. The permit will sell for $73.38 per each 90-day period. A two-permit limit per address will remain in place. • Creation of a lowincome fee waiver program for overnight parking permits. Individuals may qualify by meeting criteria which includes individuals receiving public benefits under certain programs. Individuals eligible for
the low-income fee waiver program will receive a 50% discount on annual overnight and temporary 90-day overnight permits. • Enforcement of daytime street sweeping restrictions resumed Tuesday. Warnings to be issued for two weeks, with citations to resume Sept. 1. • Resumption of non-critical vehicle impounds and booting, including for vehicles with five or more past due parking citations, and for vehicles with expired registrations, effective November.
CBSLA first reported that a big rig carrying 38,000 pounds of milk crashed through a retaining wall of the eastbound 210 Freeway in Monrovia Tuesday around 2 a.m. The truck, which landed on Evergreen, suffered “heavy engine damage” and was separated from the loaded trailer. The driver was not hurt, and no milk was spilled on the freeway. The California Highway Patrol told CBS that two right lanes and the Huntington Drive eastbound on-ramp would be blocked for cleanup and repair until at least 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Pasadena Couple Charged with Tying 6-year-old Boy to Bed A man and a woman have been charged with tying up his 6-year-old son to a bed in their Pasadena home, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday. Ivan Michael Arriaga and Claudia Georgina Hernandez were each charged on Friday in case GA108378 with one count of child abuse under circumstances or conditions likely to cause great bodily injury. They were scheduled to be arraigned Monday, but the hearing was continued
to Aug. 26 in Department D of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Pasadena Branch. Between June 1 and Aug. 12, the defendants are accused of using zip ties to restrain Arriaga’s son at various times. The victim allegedly had injuries to one of his ankles. If convicted as charged, the defendants each face a possible maximum sentence of six years in state prison. The case remains under investigation by the Pasadena Police Department.

The Burbank International Film Festival (BIFF) announced this week that they will be able to watch all of the semi-finalist films for the 2020 film festival as a virtual event. Over 250 global films will be screened during the four-day festival taking place Sept. 10-13. “BIFF has partnered with media tech company Festivee to create an outstanding digital showcase for this year’s filmmakers and their work. Utilizing Festivee’s technologically advanced programming and design team, along with their broadband streaming capabilities, this year’s online virtual film festival and awards show will be a very impressive event,” said Jeff Rector, BIFF’s president and festival director. Now celebrating its 12th year in “The Media Capital of the World,” the Burbank International Film Festival will launch on Thursday, Sept. 10, and continue
through Sunday, Sept. 13, when the winners will be announced at the grand closing night awards show. Rector, his Board of Directors and media team worked to present the best possible viewing experience for audiences and, said Rector, “to create a Festival and Awards Show second to none.” BIFF’s annual Awards Show traditionally takes place at the Burbank Airport Marriott Convention Center but they were forced to rethink the presentation when confronted with the realities that coronavirus presented. Newly appointed Board Member Kurt Patino suggested producing a virtual award show at L.A. Castle Studios, which he enlisted as a sponsor this year. “L.A. Castle Studios could not have been more accommodating and supportive of our festival, and we‘re grateful to be partnering with one of the premier production studios
in Burbank and Hollywood. It allowed the festival to try something new and exciting,” said Patino. “The L.A. Castle Studios team helped craft a first-rate production experience that brings all the excitement and fanfare of a live event straight into filmmakers’ and audiences’ living rooms.” “Not only were we able to use a state-of-the-art production facility for the show itself, but we will be editing in the self-taped acceptance speeches from the winning filmmakers from around the world, as part of the live-streaming event on Sept. 13. Kaiser Permanente Study Finds Obesity Increases Risk of Death from COVID-19

Half Day After School Camp Offered at Two Arcadia Elementary Schools As the 2020-2021 school year begins, Arcadia Recreation and Community Services Department will be offering a half day after school camp that will follow approved modifications by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. These guidelines are subject to change, based on the local protocols related to COVID-19 and will be sent out to parents at registration. The half day after school camp will be
offered at Baldwin Stocker Elementary School and Camino Grove Elementary School from 1-5 p.m. beginning Aug. 24. Registration is $92 per week and will open on a monthly basis. Camp will still offer a variety of organized recreational activities for ages 5-12, led by trained activity leaders. Registration is now open for camp taking place Aug. 24 – Oct. 2 online at ArcadiaCA.gov/recreation.
In a study published in Annals of Internal Medicine, Kaiser Permanente research shows that obesity was associated with a substantial increased risk of death from COVID-19. However, it also found that the risk of death from COVID-19 associated with obesity is not uniform among those who are obese, but instead disproportionately affects men and people under 60 years of age. "Although this study examines a variety of factors that may be associated with risk of death from COVID19, our main objective in this paper was to understand risk related to obesity, and obesity-associated chronic conditions in our health care system," said lead researcher, Sara Y. Tartof, PhD, MPH, of Kaiser Permanente Southern California Department of Research & Evaluation. In this study, researchers looked at the electronic health records of 6,916 Kaiser Permanente Southern California members who tested positive for COVID-19 between Feb. 13, 2020, and
May 2, 2020. The mean age of the patients was 49 years and mean body mass index (BMI) was 30.5. A BMI of 30 to 39 is considered obese, 40 to 44 is severely obese, and 45 or higher is extremely obese. Among the findings: • Patients who were severely obese had nearly three times the risk of death and those who were extremely obese had over four times the risk of death from COVID-19 compared to those of normal weight. • Severely and extremely obese people who were 60 years old and younger had a substantially higher risk of death than severely obese people over age 60. • Severely and extremely obese men had a very high risk of death, while women had no increased risk of death associated with obesity. Researchers were able to control for a variety of risks previously reported in the literature and did not detect increased risk of death from COVID-19 associated with Black or Latinx race/ethnicity alone. "Our findings suggest that it is not race or ethnicity alone that increases risk of death, but rather other correlated factors, including access to health care, comorbidities, and obesity, that also play an important role," Dr. Tartof said. She explained that the findings provide more insight into disparities in
severity of COVID-19 among minority communities. Having access to a diversity of health information allows researchers to begin to disentangle the factors that may contribute to these disparities, she said. "At Kaiser Permanente, we have the ability to see what happens when patients from different race, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds have better access to high quality of care," she said. "When we even out access, and tease apart health factors that are often related, we can have a better picture of the role of race/ ethnicity alone." Sameer B. Murali, MD, an internal medicine physician at Kaiser Permanente Fontana Medical Center and senior author on this study, noted that when physicians know more precisely who is at elevated risk of death, they can put in place treatment plans and interventions to modify that risk, rather than treating every patient the same. "By viewing the risk posed by obesity through the prism of COVID-19, this study advances the characterization of obesity as a disease that demands a public health and clinical response similar to that for diabetes or heart disease," he said. Appellate Court Upholds L.A. County’s Ban on Indoor Religious Services Saturday, the California Court of Appeal set aside a lower court order that would have allowed indoor services to take place at Grace Community Church in Sun Valley. The Court of Appeal’s decision temporarily upholds the County’s Health Officer Orders prohibiting indoor worship services. The court ordered the church to provide a formal response to the County’s petition by Aug. 25. A full hearing on the matter is scheduled for Sept. 4. “As between the harm that flows from the heightened risk of transmitting COVID-19 (namely “serious
illness and death”) and the harm that flows from having to conduct religious services outdoors instead of indoors, the balance at this early stage favors issuance of a stay,” the court said in its ruling. Los Angeles County issued the following statement on Saturday’s decision: “Los Angeles County is pleased that the California Court of Appeal recognizes the vital importance of our Health Officer Orders in protecting the lives and health of our residents as we work to slow the spread of the deadly COVID-19 virus. “We will continue to work closely with all religious institutions, including Grace

phase of the pandemic. “Outdoor religious observances are permitted; participants must wear cloth face coverings and maintain
six feet of distance from each other unless they live in the same household. “The County is grateful to all residents and institutions for coming together to take the actions that will continue to move us forward, as a community, through our recovery.” Los Angeles County filed a lawsuit against Grace Community Church after the church held indoor worship services on July 26 and Aug. 2. In response, the church filed its own suit alleging that regulations are not equally applied by Governor Gavin Newsom, Mayor Eric Garcetti, and California Attorney General Xavier
Becerra. Despite the appellate court’s ruling allowing public health officials to enforce its ban on indoor religious services, Grace Community Church once again held indoor services on Sunday. Outdoor seating was provided as an option for congregants. “We’re not meeting because we want to be rebellious,” said Pastor John MacArthur. “We’re meeting because our Lord has commanded us to come together and worship him.” The church’s defiance of health officer orders could result in citations, L.A. County said.
L.A. County Offers COVID-19 Rent Relief The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has provided $100 million in Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act funds to create a COVID-19 Rent Relief program, operated by the Los Angeles County Development Authority (LACDA). The program launched Monday and will remain open for a two-week period, closing on Monday, Aug. 31. The program’s goal is to assist between 8,000 to over 9,000 households. The emergency rental assistance provided is intended to meet the needs of low-income renters who have struggled to pay their rent and/or who are behind on paying rent due to the economic impacts
caused by the pandemic. Those who are most at need will be targeted with more assistance. The program is available to all residents of the County who qualify, except for residents living in the City of Los Angeles, as the city also received its own allocation of CARES Act funds. A W-9 and participation agreement are needed from the property owners to receive rental income on behalf of their qualified tenant; property owners must agree to the terms of the participation agreement. Citizenship documentation will not be requested from any party (renter or property owner). "This unrelenting pandemic is hitting lowincome renters and mom-
and-pop property owners particularly hard," Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas said. "By some estimates, up to 20% of families who have lost a job in L.A. County could end up homeless. They're in critical need of financial help now to keep a roof over their heads." Residents can apply for assistance by contacting 211 L.A. via phone at 2-1-1 or through their website at 211la.org/lacounty/rentrelief. To be considered for this program, applications must be received Aug. 31, 2020. Newsom Signs Heat Emergency Proclamation to Free Up Energy Capacity As California continues to experience a scorching heat wave and related energy shortages, Governor Gavin Newsom signed an emergency proclamation to free up energy capacity and reduce the need for temporary energy service disruptions. The proclamation temporarily allows some energy users and utilities to use backup energy sources to relieve pressure on the grid during peak times during the energy emergency. Over the weekend, state officials worked to bring more
energy resources online, including increased generation from sources like the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the California State Water Project and investorowned utilities. The state has also worked with industrial and commercial consumers to reduce energy consumption during peak hours. On Sunday, the governor convened a meeting with California Independent System Operator (CAISO), the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), the California Energy Commission (CEC), the
California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) and senior administration officials as the state and the entire West Coast anticipates serious power shortages as the heat wave intensifies over the coming week. Following the meeting, Newsom sent a letter to CAISO, the CPUC and CEC demanding an investigation into the service disruptions that occurred over the weekend and “the energy agencies’ failure to predict and mitigate them,” a press release read.
“I write today to express my deep concern about the broadscale de-energizations experienced by too many Californians on August 14 and 15th. These blackouts, which occurred without prior warning or enough time for preparation, are unacceptable and unbefitting of the nation’s largest and most innovative state,” he wrote. “Residents, communities and other governmental organizations did not receive sufficient warning that these de-energizations could occur. Collectively, energy regulators
failed to anticipate this event and to take necessary actions to ensure reliable power to Californians. This cannot stand. California residents and businesses deserve better from their government. During a press conference Monday Newsom acknowledge that the state failed to predict and plan for the energy shortages. “I am not pleased with what’s happened,” he said. “You shouldn’t be pleased with the moment that we’re in in the state of California.” However, according to

ARCADIA Aug. 9 At 11:03 p.m., officers responded to a residence in the 100 block of West Live Oak Avenue regarding a residential burglary and stolen vehicle report. Surveillance footage revealed two suspects entered the victim’s garage and fled westbound on Live Oak Avenue with the victim’s vehicle. The suspects were described as two males, one with short hair and facial hair and the other was seen wearing a hat. Aug. 10 At 1:26 a.m., officers responded to a residence in the 700 block of West Lemon Avenue regarding a subject making suicidal threats. Officers contacted the supposed victim and discovered the report was false and no one at the location was threatening to endanger themselves. Over recent weeks, Arcadia Police Department has received multiple false 911 calls. Further investigation revealed more than nine false 911 calls had been received from the 700 block of West Lemon Avenue. Another similar incident occurred on Aug. 15 where officers determined the suspects were a 7-year-old male and a 11-year-old male, both from Arcadia, who admitted to placing the false calls. At 5:59 a.m., an officer responded to Arcadia High School, located at 180 Campus Drive, regarding a vandalism report. The officer determined an unknown suspect(s) spraypainted on the Performing Arts Center. At 3:57 p.m., an officer responded to Hilton Garden Inn, located at 199 N. Second Ave., regarding a vehicle burglary report. Sometime between Aug. 8 at 5 p.m. and Aug. 9 at 4 a.m., someone cut a lock to the rear cargo compartment of a rented truck and stole 3000 cloth masks. There is no suspect information at the time of this report. Aug. 11 At 4:50 a.m., officers responded to the U.S. Post Office, located at 41 Wheeler Ave., regarding a mail theft report. An employee witnessed a suspect steal a package from the secured parking lot, climb over a
fence and flee westbound with the stolen package. The suspect is described as a male, thin build, approximately 6 feet tall, in his early twenties, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, and gray sweatpants. At 8:17 a.m., an officer responded to R.J. Collins Plumbing, located at 205 N. Second Ave., regarding an attempted vehicle theft. Sometime during the previous night, unknown suspect(s) shattered the passenger window, pried open the passenger door lock, and tampered with the ignition. There is no suspect information at this time. Aug. 12 At 9:34 a.m., an officer took a telephonic report of a theft from vehicle that occurred in the 300 block of West Huntington Drive. The victim stated an unknown suspect entered his unsecured vehicle, and once inside, the suspect stole the victim’s vacuum, saw, sunglasses, and a briefcase. At 1:03 p.m., an officer took a telephonic report of a battery that occurred in the 1000 block of Balboa Drive. An investigation revealed two juvenile males engaged in a physical fight over a female. The suspect is a 16-year-old male from Arcadia and the victim did not desire prosecution. At 10:07 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 100 block of La Sierra Avenue regarding a suspicious person. Surveillance footage captured a lone suspect entering the rear yard. The suspect was seen shining his flashlight at the cameras, climbing over the fence, and running away from the residence. The suspect is described as a heavy-set adult with a dark colored hooded sweatshirt and mask. Aug. 13 At 2:47 p.m., an officer responded to China Red, located at 855 S. Baldwin Ave., regarding a vehicle burglary report. The victim discovered someone had smashed her rear passenger window and fled with her computers, purse, passport, and cash. The investigation is pending a review of the surveillance footage. Aug. 14
At 1:22 p.m., an officer conducted an enforcement stop on a vehicle in the 1000 block of South First Avenue for having expired registration and tinted windows. During a consensual search of the vehicle, the officer located marijuana hidden in a compartment in the vehicle, a stolen check stub from a local Arcadia address, checks not belonging to the suspect, photocopies of social security cards, and other identity theft evidence. The officer also located methamphetamine pipes and five rounds of ammunition. An investigation revealed the stolen social security information was likely stolen from the suspect’s employer. The 28-year-old from Los Angeles was arrested. At 7:34 p.m., an officer responded to the intersection of Duarte Road and La Cadena Avenue regarding a traffic collision with injuries. Upon contacting one of the drivers, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol emitting from the suspect’s breath. Based on the suspect’s symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol, the officer arrested the 42-yearold male from Arcadia. Aug. 15 At 12:50 p.m., an officer took a telephonic fraud report from a victim who resides in the 1600 block of Perkins Drive. The victim was expecting a new credit card and discovered someone had stolen it from his mailbox. The victim then learned an unknown suspect had used the credit card to complete two fraudulent transactions, resulting in a loss of $776.53. At 4:31 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 300 block of South First Avenue regarding a petty theft report. Sometime between 11:27 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. on Aug. 15, unknown suspect(s) stole nine packages from the victim’s porch which contained baseball cards.
MONROVIA At 7:44 a.m., officers were patrolling the parking lot of a business in the 1600 block of South Mountain when they saw a male subject sleeping in his vehicle. They approached the vehicle and saw a methamphetamine pipe on the passenger seat. When the subject was
contacted, he was also found to be in possession of methamphetamine. The subject was arrested. At 3:23 p.m., a resident in the 600 block of West Lime received a text notification that her UPS packages were delivered and signed for the day before. She had no knowledge of this. She contacted UPS and confirmed her Apple MacBook and Air Pods were given to an unknown female suspect. At 5:04 p.m., a resident in the 100 block of North Garfield reported a theft that occurred sometime during the day from their vehicle, which was parked in their driveway. An officer reviewed a security camera, and it appears the suspects entered the vehicle through an unlocked driver-side door. A set of keys were taken from the center console. Aug. 7 At 10:26 a.m., a caller reported a bicyclist and a motorist had just collided into one another at the intersection of Primrose and Colorado. The bicyclist was complaining of pain to his left knee but refused medical attention. The driver of the vehicle was found at fault and was issued a citation for the driving violation.

The mail belonged to an Arcadia resident, so Arcadia Police Department responded and collected it. The Arcadia resident confirmed it had been stolen. At 8:59 p.m., an employee from a business in the 700 block of West Huntington called to report a suspicious subject loitering in the lobby. An officer responded and spoke with the subject. The officer learned the subject was a critical missing from Alhambra. The officer bought the subject some food while they waited for Alhambra Police Department to respond. Aug. 9
At 10:17 p.m., an employee from a business in the 400 block of South Myrtle called police to report a subject at the location who was yelling obscenities and racial slurs at patrons. Officers arrived and determined the subject was intoxicated and unable to care for himself or others. He was arrested. Aug. 8 At 12:34 a.m., a caller reported a possible drunk driver in the area of Colorado and Myrtle. Officers arrived in the area and located the vehicle. The officer observed the driver commit a traffic violation and conducted a traffic stop. After a DUI investigation, it was determined the driver was intoxicated. She was arrested for DUI. At 7:06 a.m., a resident in the 400 block of Hurstview reported her neighbor had trespassed onto her gated property earlier that morning, yelling and screaming at the resident. The pedestrian was thrown a few feet and struck the ground. She suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. The driver was determined to be at fault and was issued a citation. At 4:43 p.m., a caller reported a subject in the area of Greystone and Mountain that he knew was wanted by the police. Officers located a vehicle matching the description provided to dispatch and initiated a traffic stop. When the vehicle came to a stop, the subject exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Officers chased the subject through several yards and streets. The subject was eventually detained and arrested. Aug. 11 At 7:12 p.m., a traffic collision was reported at the intersection of Huntington and Shamrock. Officers responded and checked on the wellbeing of the occupants. Two people were transported to a local hospital for complaint of pain.

or the last three weeks I have been first in the hospital for five days with the balance in a skilled nursing center for physical therapy. No one but staff is allowed to visit. After the first 14 days in isolation and three negative coronavirus tests, I was moved in with a roommate and allowed to go to the “gym” for physical therapy. The joy of physical therapy is finding a long-time buddy is in the same facility and we try to get our therapy at the same time. The high point is watching Hal Leavens (half of Monrovia’s Welcome Wagon) practicing his “bubble dance.” Having just had back surgery, Hal has been assigned this exercise by physical “terrorists” (as we affectionately refer to them) to work on his balance. Even if Sally Rand were still alive, I don’t think she would need to worry about Hal. Give him some feather fans and it might be a different matter. The point of this article

nion Station’s Lorena Ruiz, interim project coordinator for Project RoomKey (PRK) at several locations across the San Gabriel Valley, and her on-going efforts to safeguard the most vulnerable during the pandemic have earned her the title of “hero” in her field. Ruiz has worked for Union Station for the past four years but has advocated for those in need of safe housing for 10 years, working with LGTBQ communities in the early stages of her career in different places like New York City, San Diego, Los Angeles and currently in the San Gabriel Valley. During the pandemic she identified an opportu-
nity to do more in the early stages of Project RoomKey — a program in which the state of California collaborates with local governments to turn motels and hotels into interim housing for people who are at a high-risk of contracting COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the virus. As soon as she learned about Project RoomKey, Ruiz was onboard. “I knew I wanted to be part of it and help in some way, shape or form, and now I’m invested,” she said as we sat across from each other, 6 feet apart and wearing our masks. Ruiz has already helped four residents transition to safe housing in Monrovia this year while managing the fast-paced environment her role requires to serve hundreds of clients with high-level needs during these chaotic times.
Her main focus is on finding pathways to permanent housing for residents because it prevents local neighbors from returning to homelessness. One of the challenges is finding affordable housing for residents in Los Angeles County but that does not seem to discourage Ruiz. “There are so many staff members who are invested in Project RoomKey’s success and more specifically in getting people permanently housed. One resident at one of the PRK sites I oversee, was recently permanently housed. He had a team of dedicated professionals working with him every step of the way. From helping him fill out his voucher application, to showing him potential units, to going over the terms of the lease with him on lease signing

The ensuing hours saw officers trying to preserve the scene for the initial investigation when scores of individuals descended upon La Pintoresca Park where an officer’s body worn camera caught severely upset and angry citizens, and a threat to knock out a police officer. On Monday afternoon, Pasadena Independent was invited to a press conference along with other local news organizations regarding the incident. The two-hour meeting included the viewing of some of the incidents captured on officers’ body worn cameras both Saturday and Sunday at the scene. In the light of the national attention to police shootings and resulting protests, Chief Perez said Pasadena police officers exercised considerable restraint in dealing with the aftermath of the shooting. Officers can clearly be seen standing in a semicircle as protesters disregard the crime scene tape and verbally assault many of the officers on scene. Around midnight police received several 911 calls of additional disturbances at La Pintoreca Park and more officers were dispatched. People began throwing rocks, and even a peanut butter jar, at officers who subsequently
declared the gathering illegal and demanded that people disperse. The crowd continued to throw projectiles like bottles at the police. Another incident, clearly visible, was when an officer deployed a taser on a suspect who made some threatening moves and was subsequently arrested. While this was going on, a young boy was hit by pepper spray, the source of which remains unclear at this time. At some point, the mother of the boy discharged her own pepper spray at an officer. The woman was not immediately arrested pending the outcome of the investigation which will likely take months. As Chief Perez along with members of his command staff sat with reporters to discuss the events of the past weekend, the role that misinformation and distrust of police played in the volatile situation was discussed. Rumors surfaced that McClain was not armed at all and was shot by police multiple times in the back, and then point-blank once he was on the ground. The video will prove otherwise, Perez said. Perez said these social media claims are unfounded and highly irresponsible — making the police investigation more difficult and officers uneasy with the way
the public perceives them. “This is a local issue,” Perez said. “The rumor of there being no gun on the individual is completely false,” he said. The video tape, Perez said, shows McClain holding a weapon at some point. Perez hopes to release the video of the shooting soon. Initial reports, again on social media, also said that the victim was shot in the back multiple times. Perez said this is false. “Two shots were fired by an officer, and one struck Mr. McClain in the ‘flank’ of his body… he fell to the ground.” The social and economic impact of a shooting in any city can reverberate for years. The police would not confirm that the victim was a gang member but did say that a gang issue exists in Pasadena and felt that this past week tension was palatable. Perez says the investigations will be numerous including an independent critique of the events on Saturday. Perez, in his new role as chief, for the past three years has initiated an effort for the department to be more transparent, especially when an officer involved shooting takes place and a death occurs as a result. Ruiz does what she does because she wants to create a better future for our local communities. “Homelessness is a symptom of larger structural issues like racism, poverty, lack of adequate healthcare, ageism, xenophobia, transphobia, etc. that are at the root of our society. When we examine what is at the root of the problem, we can begin working toward a better tomorrow. My work and the work of many of my colleagues in this field is not only to make a difference in people’s lives; we are working toward a better society in which homelessness no longer exists. Everyone, including community members, can take part in building a better tomorrow for generations to come.”

s you know, we're facing record breaking unemployment. Unemployment for July was up by 1.8 million, with a rate of 10.2 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. These staggering numbers mean that many people are looking for new jobs. If you are a job seeker, you're probably wondering where to begin. You may wonder where to find the best job search websites, and the best job search apps. There are many websites where you can look for jobs. There are three main sites that I recommend for most jobs: LinkedIn, Glassdoor, and Indeed. Each of these sites has a great app. If you work in certain specialized fields, there are other sites you should also be aware of. For example, if you're looking for a government job, you should check out usa.gov. If you’re looking for a job related to sports, check out teamworkonline.com. There are many other sites, but let's start with the basics of the top three. LinkedIn offers job seekers many features.
You can create an online profile that is essentially an online resume or portfolio of your work. LinkedIn also gives you the opportunity to connect with people who work at the companies you're interested in. And, it has job postings. The job postings offer various data points, including how many people have applied to a job and how you rank in comparison to other candidates. In addition, you may be able to see an estimated salary and the human resources recruiter who posted the job. Applying is fairly straightforward, and there are optional features available such as asking for a referral. Glassdoor and Indeed are now owned by the same parent company. They're both excellent websites with unique features. Glassdoor is built on employee feedback. They have similar job postings to those offered on LinkedIn but they also give quite a bit of information about each company. You can look at how well-ranked a company is by its employees. You can also see how much the company pays employees for specific roles and,you can look up interview questions the company may ask.
Indeed has long been hailed as the world's largest job website. They have more job postings than any other website. Indeed also shares estimated salary data with job seekers, along with company reviews. As you can see, each job website adds its own value. On top of that, you want to look where the jobs are listed. Not every company puts each job on all three sites. You don't want to miss jobs by only focusing on one site. Use each site in the way that it best fits you. Then, go directly to company websites for companies you really love. And, keep your eyes open for other sites that may be more specific to your career.
